10 Countries in 12 Weeks

As I am going into my 4th year this fall, many of my close friends have already studied abroad, so I knew it would be a valuable experience. Even though I did not come into the Oxford Program knowing many people, I did not want to let that uncertainty keep me from this once in a lifetime experience. So, I took the leap and traveled Europe with a brand-new group of people, and I will be forever thankful that I did.

One thing I cherished about the Oxford program was the ability to learn about some of the greatest artists in history one day, then see their creations in person the next. One instance of this that will always stick with me was visiting Claude Monet’s House and Gardens in Giverny, France. Monet coined the term “impressionism” in 1872 with his work “Impression, Sunrise,” starting an artistic movement characterized by landscapes, visible brush strokes, natural light’s effect on colors, and a fascination with capturing moments. In 1883, Monet moved to Giverny and created an expansive, beautiful garden around his home that still flourishes today. We were able to see firsthand the exact views and nature that inspired some of Monet’s most famous landscapes. Seeing where he lived made me understand how artists describe being stricken with inspiration. To be in this garden is to be moved by natural beauty. I have found that I do not envy Monet’s notoriety nor fame in the art community, but his day-to-day lifestyle. Being here made me realize that my end goal is to live somewhere serene and picturesque, and to make things that bring a smile to my face, just as he did.

This summer has also taught me that some of the best experiences in your life can be unexpected and unplanned. As I mentioned before, I came into this program knowing almost no one. I had assumed I would make acquaintances over the course of the summer, but not necessarily strong friendships. Oh boy was I mistaken because during the travel portion, I was lucky enough to meet my friend Sarah. She is going into her 2nd year this fall, so I am confident that if not for this summer, we would have never crossed paths at all. I could go on and on about what a lovely person Sarah is, but I will sum it up by saying she is confident, funny, and looks out for the people she loves. Sarah had plans to go meet up with her family in Dublin, Ireland and asked me to join them. On our first day there, we took a hike at the Howth Cliff Walk with her family. Sarah, her mom, and I got separated from the others and accidentally started on the purple route, which was evidently far longer than our intended hike. Sarah and I were not in athletic shoes, and we were hiking in what felt like a muddy jungle. Our hike ended up being a whopping five miles and we had to take a bus and a taxi to get back to Howth at the end. Despite the unexpected challenge this presented, it made our experience so much better. We were able to see breathtaking views from all around the island and even some roaming goats. Even though it was not something I had initially planned on, this was one of my favorite experiences from my summer abroad.

By far my favorite art exhibit we visited during the travel portion was at the Upper Belvedere in Vienna, Austria. This was none other than Franz Xaver Messerschmidt’s series of over sixy portrait busts titled “Character Heads.” Messerschmidt explored the range of human emotions and states in this unique body of work. At first, they seem similar to the traditional realistic sculptures of the time. However, some of the faces are overtly altered and distorted to the point of the grotesque. These were psychological studies aimed to capture the range of human emotions, from extreme joy and ecstasy to pain, fear, and despair. However, the most striking aspect of these sculptures are the exaggerated facial expressions. Messerschmidt portrayed his subjects with grimaces and contorted features, which made them appear eerie and almost otherworldly. Messerschmidt’s legacy is unmatched as these sculptures are considered ahead of their time and have been interpreted as early explorations of psychological states in art. My takeaway from his work is that human emotions are complex and sometimes hard to understand. I see the contourted expressions as representing the emotions we find hard to describe to others, that take on a deep feeling but no name. His work serves to acknowledge the confusion that comes along with being a person moving through life and having experiences that affect you emotionally. When I look at his sculptures, I am being told “it is okay to not know what this feeling is, just feel it anyway.”

The main aspect that drew me to the Oxford program in the first place was the structure. I enjoyed the fact that the planning for lodging, transportation, and museum visits for the travel portion were taken care of up front. I also appreciate that the destinations for the groups were rigid and predetermined, because it forced me to visit cities I would not have on my own. The travel portion also gives Georgia Tech students the unique opportunity to broaden their educational horizons by studying the arts. I consider myself to be a creative person and these classes allowed me to lean into those aspects of my personality. The residential portion in Oxford also comes at a perfect time in the summer. Just as you are getting worn out from the constant traveling, you are met with the luxury of rest at one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. The residential portion also allows you to fall back into routine, which was something I had missed during the travel portion. I can say with confidence that this will be a summer I remember for the rest of my life, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to have experienced it.

Chapter 6 - The Neighbour.

Her date with Brad went well, she smiles thinking back to that night.

"What's your favourite cocktail?" she looks up from the drinks menu, "That's a tough one, but if I have to pick I'd say Mojito! Yours?" he asks as he takes the last bite of his brownie, "tequila sunrise! Duh!" she laughs.

After they get the bill, he walks her home, "this is where you live?" he looks up at the apartment building, "yeah, small but it's home, you know?" he smiles at her making her blush, he lifts her chin and captures her lips with his. Her heart flutters and skips, she pushes his mouth open with her tongue making him groan.

After a few minutes she pulls away, "wow! As much as I would love to invite you inside, but I'm not ready for that!" He grins at her, "I'll happily let you take the lead on that! I better go! Thanks for another great evening, we'll arrange something after the weekend?"

"Thanks for understanding! It was fun! Yeah, whenever you're free! So night!" She pecks him on the lips "Night! Have a great weekend!"

Saturday morning...

Alana was on the phone to her best friend from back home Chloe.

"Let me get this straight, you are going with Dean, you sexy neighbour to his ex girlfriend's wedding and pretending to be his new girlfriend?"

"Yes, Chlo don't give me that judgey voice! I'm helping out a friend and yes he is hot, but we are nothing more than friends. No boundaries are going to be crossed. How Eli's campaign going?"

"All I'm saying what happens in Dallas stays in Dallas. Ugh, can we talk about something else I've had it up to here with his campaign and schmoozing with his poncy friends and dinner parties!" Chloe sighs.

"Chlo, nothing is going to happen in Dallas! Ok, I'm not sure if I'll be back home for Christmas, Fifi and Simon are going over to Ireland to see his family, but I will be over at the end of February for your birthday! Tell Eli, family and friends only! No business man or people that can help his campaign! My orders!"

Chlo chuckles "I'll tell him, you’ll put his head on a pike!"

Alana's door opens "Chlo, I've got to go! I'll speak next week!"

"Ok, I can't wait to hear all about it! I love you!"

"Ok, I love you too Chlo!" She hangs up the phone.

"Are you ready to hit the road?" he calls over her shoulder as she's stuffing the last few things in her bag, "now I am!" turning towards him, she hands him a bottle of whiskey "I thought we might need it this weekend!" he chuckles "Thanks!" he's thankful she's coming along.

He wouldn't have even considered going if it wasn't for her "how long have you told ya parents, we've been together for?" he heavier sighs, "my parents aren't coming. My Mom had to work and Dad...well, he's covering me!" he throws his bag in the boot of baby before taking hers and placing hers in next to his. "Ok, so we need to get our story straight! How long have we been together?" She calls over as she gets into his car.

He jumps into the driver's seat "I don't know...six months?" she nods "Cool, you know it’s ok to be nervous!" she can sense something is off with him. "I know it's just...it's hard you know!?" she reaches over to the steering wheel and places her hand over his, "I will be there with you! If we have to drink our way through the weekend so be it!"

He chuckles "Sounds like a plan I can get behind!" he smirks feeling a little lighter.

A few hours later they pull up to the hotel "This is posh!" she looks up at the hotel, looking over to him, she can see the what ifs? Going through his mind. "Which means one thing...BORING!" she winks making him laugh, "shall we head in?" he nods towards the hotel before he reluctantly hands over his car keys to the valet "one scratch on her! I'm coming for you!" Dean narrows his eyes at the now scared valet.

"Dean! Stop scaring the poor guy!" she laughs and heads inside.

They check in and shown to their room, "what time is the hen and stag do?" he looks over her knitting his brows together, and she remembers "sorry, I mean the bachelor and bachelorette?"

"You Brits have the weirdest names for things!" he laughs, "whatever! The bed situation? Top and tail or cuddling up?" She nods toward the king size, he looks over to the bed completely forgetting to ask or two singles, "Crap! Sorry! Erm..." she breaks into a laugh, "I'm messing with ya! We are two adults, we can share a bed, just no hogging the duvet!" She points her finger at him as she's unpacking.

Danie and Glen had arranged a bachelor and bachelorette dinner for those who were coming to the wedding but weren't able to make the original parties.

Dean was buttoning up his shirt as Alana emerges from the bathroom in a black sequin dress, for a second he forgets himself. "What do you think?" she twirls smiling, he blinks, taking her in "Stunning...absolutely beautiful!"

She stops "you scrub up well too!" She can't believe how hot he looks in a suit. It makes her suck in a breath, she walks over and straightens his ties "better! It was a little crooked!" She smiles, realizing she's a little too close, taking a step back, he looks down at her dress again, "wait! The invite says you have to wear yellow!" She mischievously grins, "yeah, I didn't a yellow dress! Plus, who wants to dress like a yellow canary!"

He knew it was a lie as he's seen her in a yellow dress over the summer, he wonders if she's decided against it because it was his ex that asked for her to wear yellow. "Are you going to be ok? I know you don't know anyone..." she abruptly cuts him off, "we are in the same boat right? I can't imagine you know many of the guys here?" He thought for a second, they no longer ran with the same crowds, that was for sure and he knew Cas, Charlie and Jack declined her invitation.

"You're probably right!" Even Sam wasn't coming because he couldn't get time off work. He started to question why he was even here?! "Hey! I can see what you're thinking! None of that, smile, grit your teeth and be fake happy! Fake it until you make it!" She turns looking at herself in the mirror one more time. "Hey, we should get a photo together! We need to remember this moment!" She picks her phone up from the bed and ushers him over in front of the mirror.

"Ready, say pie!" He shook his head and smiled "Pie!" They both say as she takes the photo.

At the bachelorette...

The girls were meeting in the ballroom of the hotel and the boys in the restaurant walking in early there are only two other women here. She smiles at them, Dean had shown her a photo of Danie taking over ten years ago, but neither of these women looked like her. "Hi! I'm here for Danie's bachelorette dinner?" Both the women smile at her.

"Oh, what's your name, sweets?" the older lady asks, "Alana!" the older lady looks over to the younger one "Alana? Who are you here with?" they both look confused as neither of them recognize her. "Erm..Dean, Dean Winchester." The older lady smiles "aww the one that got away! She's Dean's plus one, Faye!"

"Sorry, can I ask who you are?" Alana smiles, "I am Maria the mother of the bride and Faye is Danie's sister. How is Dean? I still can't believe she let him get away!" she takes a deep breathe "nice to meet you, both of you! He is doing great, and I guess her loss is my gain! Right?!" She smugly smirks, Maria begrudgingly agrees, "yeah, I suppose!" She looks at her dress, "I guess you didn't get the memo about wearing yellow?"

She looks down at her dress, "Oh no! I did, but yellow isn't my colour! Dean calls me Alana banana!" she giggles. Maria disapprovingly chuckles, "right, what are you drinking?" Faye calls over from the table, "Whatever is open, I'm not fussed!" she makes her way over to the table, "where am I sitting?" she looks around the table.

"Oh as you don't know anyone why, do you take a seat next to me?" Faye taps the chair next to her, "Great!" she moves round to sit next to Faye as another bunch of girls walks in, she notices Danie right away with the 'Bride to be!' sash. They reach the table, Danie notices her, Alana stands holding out her hand with a bright smile "Hi, I'm Alana!" Danie looks towards Maria confused "Alana is Dean's plus one." Maria raises a brow to her.

"Dean's girlfriend actually!" Alana corrects her and smiles even brighter, "Oh, hi!" Danie looks her up and down, "Dean didn't tell you we were wearing yellow?" if Alana didn't know any better her tone was bitter, "he did, but it's not my colour! Please forgive me!" She gives her the same disapproving look Maria gave her, "well it's nice to meet you, Danie!"

"Yeah, and you!" she smiles, but it doesn't quite reach her eyes.

At the Bachelor party...

He sips his beer, watching the groom and his best men get drunk, luckily Danie's brother Vinnie was there "your girl is at the bachelorette?" Vinnie takes another swing of his drink looking at Dean, "yeah, yeah, she is." Vinnie raises his glass, "how long you two been together?" Vinnie pushes, "six..great months!" Vinnie smiles at him "its clear she makes you happy you've been smiling since you got here!"

Dean smiles and shook his head, she does make him happy, when he's in a bad mood she quickly snaps him out of it. He shook his head, trying to rid his thoughts from his mind.

"Ready boys?!" Dean looks up towards the door where he hears the male voice, "Austin!!" Glen the groom screeched as the pair hug, watching them Dean recognizes Glen's late friend but can't place him. "I thought you weren't coming?" Glen pats his pal's back, pulling a seat up next to him "I can't make the wedding, but I couldn't miss my best pals second bachelor party!!" Austin winks at the groom, "Emilia practically pushed me out the front door!" he chuckles.

"Is she at the bachelorette?" Glen offers his friend a drink, Austin shook his head "Nah, Finley isn't feeling well, I had to collect him from school this week because Emilia hasn't been well either." Dean watches on trying to wreck his brains where he knows him from "Vin, that dude with Glen, who is he?" Dean nods towards Austin, "Glen's douchey mate, Austin. Why?" Vinnie pinches his brows together.

His lips pressed together into a thin line, "I don't know! I feel like I know him from somewhere!”

"He does live in Lawrence, if that helps?!" Vinnie offers, “I don't know, maybe he came to the shop!"

Back at the bachelorette...

The girls are laughing at a joke Faye told "How long have you and Dean been together?" Danie asks Alana pulling her away from the conversation, turning towards her "Oh..err, six months!" she smiles and turns back towards the conversation. "How did you two meet?" Danie asks to pull her away again, her question, feel like she's trying to see how serious they are, "we were neighbours!"

"Were?" she knows she isn't going to be able to go back to the conversation the table is having, "were as in we moved in together last month." She watches Danie's expression drop "Oh! Wow y-you guys have moved fast!" Alana puts on her best smile, "he practically lived at mine for months before. I guess when, you know, you know right?! I mean you know that more than anyone considering you are getting married tomorrow!" Alana kindly reminds her.

"Yeah, can't wait!" She smiles, but Alana can see right through her.

Later...

Walking up to their room Alana finds out their room is right next door to Maria's.

As they walk down the hall, Alana's door swings open, "there she is!" a drunk Dean clings onto the door frame, he notices Maria too "oh h-hey Marina... I mean M-Maria!" keeping up appearances Dean pulls Alana towards him, kisses her forehead and drapes her arm over her shoulders.

"G-good n-night ladies?" his words are slurred, "looks like you have, handsome!" Alana pats against his chest, "Dean, honey! It's so good to see you!" Maria pulls him in for a hug pulling him away from Alana. "Maria, y-yeah g-good to s-see you too!" Dean backs away, pulling Alana against him again like a security blanket.

"You've m-met m-my beautiful g-girl!" he beams at Alana. That one wasn't fake she could see that was a real happy and content smile, he kisses her cheek and looks towards Maria "yeah! We all have!" Alana makes her excuses and leaves Dean and Maria talking while she has a shower turning on the water she can still hear them talking.

"Well, she's the opposite from Danie!" she heard Maria's bitter tone, "s-she is, b-but change is g-good!" She blushed at his words, "my daughter was stupid to let you go!" she heard Dean chuckle as she washed her hair with shampoo.

"I'm glad s-she did, otherwise I-I would have n-never m-met Alana!" she listens out to hear Maria's response but instead hears the door slammed shut.

Washing the suds out of her hair, she grabs the soap and quickly washes herself.

Stepping out from behind the frosted glass she saw Dean sat on the toilet with the lid down, "hey, are you ok?" she towel dries her hair not taking her eyes off him, "D-did you hear t-that?" he looks up at her "I heard some!"

He grins weakly "s-she wants m-me to talk to D-Danie and get her to call off the w-wedding!" Alana frowns, "I guess that was why Danie was quizzing me at dinner!" she dries herself with her back towards him. "W-what did s-she ask?" looking over her shoulder at him "just how long have we been dating and how we meet!"

He heavily sighs, she pulls on her clothes under her towel. "Do you want her back?" he looks up at her.

An ancient myth about Stonehenge, first recorded 900 years ago, tells of the wizard Merlin leading men to Ireland to capture a magical stone circle called the Giants’ Dance and rebuilding it in England as a memorial to the dead.

Geoffrey of Monmouth’s account had been dismissed, partly because he was wrong on other historical facts, although the bluestones of the monument came from a region of Wales that was considered Irish territory in his day.

Now a vast stone circle created by our Neolithic ancestors has been discovered in Wales with features suggesting that the 12th-century legend may not be complete fantasy.

Its diameter of 110 metres is identical to the ditch that encloses Stonehenge and it is aligned on the midsummer solstice sunrise, just like the Wiltshire monument.

Flying around 386 kilometres above the Atlantic, the expedition 30 crew captured this gorgeous shot of both Ireland and its lovely neighbours: Scotland, England and Wales (The UK), as well as a hint of mainland Europe. Led Zeppelin Cover Artwork Part 5

Houses of the Holy

Sorry, took me a while. I was very busy the last two weeks. So next on our list is the album Houses of the Holy, which was released on 28 March 1973.

This was the first album cover designed by Hipgnosis, the famous graphic studio who designed a lot of album covers for Pink Floyd and others.

The first proposal by designer Storm Thorgerson was a electric green tennis court with a tennis racket on it. Jimmy didn’t like it, he was furious that Thorgerson was implying, by a visual pun, that their music sounded like a “racket”. Jimmy fired Thorgerson and hired Aubrey Powell (also Hipgnosis). Detail: The band didn’t grant access to the songs for Hipgnosis, they just got the information, that the title will be HOTH. That’s not a lot.

The cover was inspired by the novel Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke. I haven’t read the novel yet, so I’m not familiar with it. The science fiction novel is an epic fantasy that culminates in a scene in which all the children in the world gather together, meld into a burning column and depart the Earth. An image of the children clamoring towards some special spot from which they might depart en masse as spiritual or mental energy seemed eminently feasible and very evocative. It felt appropriate: civilisation climbing to a new dawn — a conception that was mythic like the band itself (Source).

The photographs were taken at the Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland. It was a ten day shooting and it must have been very frustrating, because they wanted to capture the light at dawn and dusk but it was cloudy and rainy, so the desired effect was never achieved.

It proved to be an extremely difficult shoot. I had wanted a sunrise or sunset, but the weather was terrible. It was early November and rained every day. Then we ran out of make-up and had to resort to car spray paint. The two children, Samantha and Stefan Gates, and their stalwart mother braved freezing conditions and extreme boredom and became thoroughly fed up.(Source)

The two children are siblings (brother and sister) called Stefan and Samantha Gates. Fun fact: Stefan never listened to the album until 2010 where he talked about it in an interview. He thought there was something sinister about the image (his sister disagreed).

The pictures were finally taken in black and white and then were multi-printed to create the effect of 11 individuals as seen on the cover. It’s a collage out of several photographs. Artist Philip Crennel hand-tinted the photo, applying water-soluble colored dyes applied in layers with a brush and airbrush to create the explosion of color out of orange, turquise and purple hues we see on the cover today.

The naked children create a vibe of innocence and natural beauty. And evoke mystery, too, because you just see them from behind and you can’t see their faces. They also suggest a younger, childlike vision of Robert with their glowing, golden locks. Their arms reach to the sky, the reason why they do that remains a mystery.

Like the last album cover there were no title and band name but Peter Grant allowed Atlantic Records to add a wrap-around paper title band for the US copies. It was like a seal that had to be broken for getting access to the record.

Fun fact: Facebook recently banned HOTH from their side because of the nudity of the children.

The inner sleeve shows some more mystery. You see a naked adult holding a child in uprised hands in front of ruins (Dunluce Castle, nearby Giant’s Causeway). Again you can’t see their faces.

A lot of questions are coming up. Is this adult offering a human? Are the children on the front side climbing up to this castle? Is there any relation to Jimmy’s interest in Aleister Crowley? What does that all mean?

My interpretation is that it is simply this idea of the children in the novel. They climb and reach for a higher level. Maybe you can also read it as growing up to another level. Because you don’t see their faces it can be anybody. You can put yourself in the place of a child.

The inner sleeve I find more difficult to read. For me it’s clearly a human offering to the gods (the light). The castle could be a temple, but it’s a very old one, rotten and almost forgotten and decayed . Maybe it’s a reminder to not forget who we are and where we come from and where we are going.

Riverborn Water Nymph // Stage 1

A few months ago I attended a Wānanga with Te Maurea at the Tannery. I sat with our matua learning about mirimiri and romiromi. I can’t even begin to try explain how powerful this was and is. I sat with him and he said he could see me in a former life as a water nymph - he had met one other person with this similar vision. He couldn’t explain anything about it. Only asking if I had Celtic blood.

I was curious and researched the symbolism and mythology of water nymphs and creatures of the like.

No matter what is shared with me I believe something can be learnt. I’m trusting that if something comes to me I can choose how it imprints on me. This encounter allowed some self-reflection/shadow work...

“Water nymphs (Naiads) Nymphs are female nature entities that are bound to a particular location or land form. Naiads are water nymphs, and inhabit fountains, wells, springs, brooks, rivers, marshes, ponds and lagoons. The essence of a naiad was bound to the water body she inhabited. If a spring dried, the naiad within it died. In some stories naiads are depicted as dangerous creatures, because they could take men underwater when fascinated by their beauty, and these men were never to be seen again. Naiads were known by their jealous nature. A naiad that was once cheated by her husband is said to have blinded him in revenge. In Greek mythology naiads were friendly creatures that helped sailors fight perilous storms. They also had the power of foresight, and were said to make prophecies. The following species of naiad are distinguished: Crinaeae, which live in fountains Limnades, which live in lakes Pagaeae, which live in springs Potameides, which live in rivers Eleiomomae, which live in marshes

Selkies In Scottish mythology selkies were sea lions that could shed their skin and take human form. They were thought to live on the shores of Orkney and Shetland. When a female selkie shed her skin and a human captured it, she was forced to become his wife. If she were to ever find her skin again, she would return to sea, leaving her husband to pine and die. In Ireland these mythical creatures are called Roane.”

“Pania is the legendary Kaitiaki (guardian/protector) of the reef in local Maori legend and her wairua (spirit) is connected strongly to the moana (ocean) close by to the town of Napier. Legend has it that Pania was a shimmering and iridescently beautiful maiden who lives in the sea and following a human encounter and a broken heart, she lingers there under the waves still.

By daylight Pania swam about with creatures of her reef world, but after sunset would go to a stream that ran into the bay. She would swim upstream to repose close to flax bushes. Karitoki, the very handsome son of a Māori chief, would quench his thirst every evening at the stream where Pania rested because it had the sweetest water.

He was unaware Pania was silently watching him with admiration for many weeks. Until one night she whispered a faint and yet intoxicating refrain. It carried on the wind to Karitoki who turned around to see Pania emerge from her hiding place.

Karitoki had never seen a young and beautiful maiden as Pania and so fell in love instantly with her shiny and thick dark hair and large eyes. Pania fell in love also, and they pledged their lives to each other and were secretly married.

Pania and Karitoki went to his whare (house) by the shadows of the eventide and so nobody but the moreporks (owls) saw them. At sunrise when Pania prepared to leave Karitoki begged her to stay a while longer.

Pania explained that as a creature of the ocean, when the sirens of the sea called her each morning, she could not survive if she didn’t return to them. She promised to return every evening and so their marriage of nocturnal passion and moving between worlds continued.

Karitoki soon boasted to his friends about his beautiful wife, but no one believed him because she appeared as an apparition and stayed only when the shadows lay thick on the land. Frustrated by this, Karitoki consulted a kaumatua (elder) of the iwi (tribe) about how to harness and ensnare the intoxicating ocean maiden named Pania. The kaumatua advised Karitoki that being a sea creature, Pania would be cursed to never return to the ocean if she swallowed cooked food.

That night, as Pania slept, Karitoki took a morsel of cooked food and put it in Pania’s mouth. As he did so, Ruru the morepork (owl) called a loud warning and Pania was startled from her sleep.

Horrified that Karitoki had put her life in jeopardy, Pania fled and ran to the sea. Her people came to the surface and drew her down into the depths as Karitoki swam frantically about the ocean looking for her. He never saw her again.

When people now look deep into the water over the reef, it’s possible to see Pania with arms outstretched reflecting in the beams of sunlight. Is she appealing to her former lover and imploring him to explain his treachery? Or is she expressing her continuing love? That all depends on who is doing the looking.

Moremore the infant son of Pania and Karitoki is now the kaitiaki (guardian) of the area. He is a taniwha (spirit) who often disguises himself as a mango (shark), pupuhi (stingray) or Tuhinga o mua (octopus).”

“The Undine (aka: Ondine, Undina) is a water spirit (or nymph) that usually appears as a beautiful woman. Unsuspecting men follow the undine's beautiful voice to where she dwells, whether that be a waterfall, river, or lake. Though she shares this trait with the sirens of Greek mythology, the undine does not drown her victims. Rather, the undine herself appears to be designed to play the role of the victim, hence why many Romantic-era authors found her story so compelling.

Unlike humans, she is soulless. But the Undine can get a soul by marrying a human and bearing him a child. However, if she does this, she loses her otherworldliness. A soul is what separates the ephemeral human life from the eternal elemental life. The undine, or undine-like creatures, are not limited to just one mythology. They are found in Greek, Irish, Scottish, Russian, Norse, and German stories. One German folktale tells the story of a young man who is caught in a storm and seeking shelter. He finds the cottage of a sweet elderly couple who live by the river. They have a beautiful daughter who is wild and tempestuous -- and incredibly enticing for this young man. She is an Undine, though the human man does not yet know it, and her elderly father is King of the Watery Realm. The old man gives the traveller permission to marry his daughter and take her to his kingdom, but on the condition that he treat her well. Should he forget that promise, he would lose his wife forever. They marry and the Undine gives birth to a son soon thereafter. Now in possession of a human soul, the nymph loses her wildness and becomes a demure, polite housewife -- which, in turn, causes her husband to be bored of her. Not even her devastating beauty keeps her husband from straying. Once her husband betrays her, the Undine returns to her watery kingdom and warns him that if he should ever fall asleep, she would steal his breath. And of course, unable to stay awake, the man ultimately pays for cheating.”

Single Review: “Jumpsuit” by Twenty One Pilots

“…My jumpsuit is on steady…” and “…I'm careless when I wear my rebel clothes…” Those are two lines from “Nico and the Niners” that allude or outright mention the jumpsuit, leading one to wonder what exactly it is in the context of this believed concept album that Twenty One Pilots has concocted with Trench (due out on October 5th via Fueled by Ramen). The lead and primary song from the forthcoming record, “Jumpsuit” (along with the accompanying music video), aims to provide context to that. In this fictional city ruled by Nico and nine bishops, it is apparently these jumpsuits that allows rebels to safely traverse the city and carry out their work to undermine their oppressors, all because the outfits have a color that can’t be seen by the bishops. It’s a creative idea, the song fleshing out a crucial aspect of the story, which is poised to be massive in scale, leaving a great deal of ground yet to cover on the other tracks that will comprise Trench.

On top of that, “Jumpsuit” is -- for the most part -- a beast of a song. The rhythm section rules the track, the thick, pulsating bass riffs that get it underway along with the restrained yet sonorous beats that accent it quickly letting the listener know they are in for something heavy. Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun are artful chameleons, impossible to pigeonhole in terms of style because no genre is off the table for them. That’s easily one of the most appealing factors that Twenty One Pilots has going for them; this song being deeply rooted in rock, though it also includes components of pop and electronic genres which enhance how compelling it is. Loud and authoritative, it demands one’s attention, even during the lull that the bridge provides; Joseph being incredibly restrained until the end, the frontman suddenly seething as he lets loose all of this anger and frustration that has welled up in him/the protagonist of the story that he is portraying. It’s visceral, the raw feelings he captures calling further attention to what a sensational vocalist he is, his pipes seemingly capable of anything. However, “Jumpsuit” succumbs to the pitfalls that made Blurryface such a lackluster follow-up. For starters, it’s overproduced. The excessive voice modulation diminishes Joseph’s natural talent, masking it in unnecessary effects that provide nothing to the song. It’s more as if it’s for the sake of being “poppy”, since that has become a hallmark of current pop music. And like “Nico and the Niners”, “Jumpsuit” is just too repetitive, something that becomes readily apparent early on. To it’s credit, it’s definitely going to be a song people will sing along with, though it’s a song that lyrically is lacking any significant substance. There is a grand total of sixty-four words used throughout the track, many of them reused multiple times. It would be near impossible to write anything that had a significant meaning when limited to such a minuscule vocabulary. Despite that, some of the lines can be taken out of context in order to provide a sense of encouragement or support to those who might need it. For example, “I can't believe how much I hate pressures of a new place roll my way…” could potentially apply to an individual who doesn’t like to go beyond their comfort zone, due to anxiety, unease or whatever else could be a contributing factor. The track soon suggesting that sometimes you have to push yourself. “Jumpsuit” easily stands as one of the most intense songs that Twenty One Pilots has written to date, though out of these first two singles released to promote Trench, it’s the other that is the better quality of song. This one does do a great job at capturing their live energy that have made their shows so outstanding, though the other qualities on the production side foil it, making it mediocre at best. Still, one has to be curious about what all this story will entail. Where does it begin? How will it end? Because as hopeful as both of these songs can sound, there’s clearly a grave threat lurking in the shadows. That’s something that Trench will (hopefully) adequately explore.
