dad!dteam hcs

a/n. i wasn't sure if you meant like child!reader or mom!reader so i picked mom!reader, the mother of dream team's children euehheheeh
Tumblr media
dream
boy dad > girl & boy dad > girl dad
big, tall, athletic dad, little copycat boy
they actually play catch together in the yard
your son is a carbon copy of dream, down to the shared pouting
they've actually quite good at teaming up against you to go out for ice cream and frozen yogurt
dad!dream would post family pictures on your birthday and your son's birthday + would post date pictures on your anniversary with one picture featuring your son
twitch chat will often hear your son wander into your lover's office asking for cuddles, and from what they can hear, dream lifts him into his lap and holds him while he continues his stream
whenever he buys things for your little boy, he buys something for you too
always asks your son if he wants to go with him to cons and such and does everything in his power to get his kid with him
sometimes he'll ask you to fly over to whatever side of the planet he's on trips just so he can see you both
other times, he'll stay up all night on facetime with your son until your phone fucking dies because he just missed him soooo much
dad!dream who makes sure your kid knows the rest of his family so that, growing up, he has people to talk to – especially his sister because he knows it's hard for kids to tell their parents stuff
dad!dream booking family vacations and always inviting his sister to go so that you guys get at least one night of alone time on the trip
also also also dad!dream who asks every year on your son's birthday if you can have another one because he already adores your first kid and the idea of having more mini hims and mini yous makes his heart melt
when you tell him no, he opts to beg for another cat and it works
there are pictures of dream holding your son and your son holding patches and the secondary cat that weren't even taken by you floating around the internet
sapnap
girl dad > girl & boy dad > boy dad
absolutely is so protective of his girls, online and offline
is always asking you if he seems like he's being too strict or too unkind to your daughter even though he's doing just fine / he's just so worried to be as strict as his dad was
definitely wants another but is more comfortable and actually wants to wait a few years to actually get a grip on parenting
dad!sap who'll be streaming with his friends until his little girl comes padding into the office, asking if she can sit with him and all of a sudden he stops yelling and tells his friends to stop swearing – those are the moments you're so bleeping glad to have had a kid
dad!sap spoiling the shit out of her and you during christmas
asking uncle!dream, george and karl to collectively take care of her so he can take you out on your anniversary and on valentine's and so you can have some damn privacy
dad!sap and uncle!karl letting your little princess paint their nails
lots of cheek kisses for your daughter and matching forehead kisses for you
from the time she starts elementary school to the time she graduates high school he's showing her the standards she should have by taking you and her each out separately at least once a week
^ he opens car and building doors, holds your hands, isn't afraid to ask if either of you want the bill split or for him to pay, offers you first pick of going out or shopping or whatever
dad!sap is also dilf!sap and the fans love it just as much as you do / that side of social media you make sure your daughter never has to see growing up
this post reminds me,, sap always bragging about being with a milf – especially telling them that HE IS THE REASON you're a milf
dad!sap who has to literally tear his daughter from his mom and sisters because they love her so much
george
girl & boy dad > girl dad > boy dad
george strikes me as the type to have twins or kids almost exactly 10 months apart. / yes, if it's not twins, he actually convinced you to have another baby RIGHT after the first
really, really good with getting them to stop fighting – he's literally the kid whisperer or something, at least that what you tell your friends
dad!george who hates leaving his kids with other people, even if it's uncle!dream or uncle!sap but on the occasion you ask for time with just him, he'll compromise
the most dad ever
is always telling the kids 'go ask your mother' when they ask for something he's unsure about and if you tell them to ask him, he doesn't confuse them and just makes a decision
insists on teaching your son that women get 'sick' for a little while each month so he's more likely to help you and also so he's more helpful when he and his sister get older and her period starts
uncle!dream making jokes about your guys starting a family youtube channel and dad!george just hitting him every time he says it because he knows you don't need the stress
teaching both of his kids that it's okay to have standards* but also that it's okay to be independent and not need anyone
*raising their standards; you taking your son out and george taking your daughter out and then switching off the next week
dad!george softening you up to letting the kids start swearing when they get to their tween years
dad!george being on the phone with his friends and his daughter just wants to show him something so he tells his friends to wait a minute
dad!george trying to cook and his son asks if he can help and george just can't help but say yes*
*they end up needing your help and your daughter joins in too

Aujourd'hui, mercredi 1 mars, nous fêtons Saint Aubin.
SAINT DU JOUR . Aubin, du latin albus, "blanc". . Prénoms dérivés : albin, Albine, Albina... . Queen of the South 5x03 Debrief
Alright. I’ve been marinating on this long enough and I’ve had a few days to relax a little and get over my initial Game of THrones PTSD response to this episode. Thank you to all of you who helped talk me off the edge the other day, lol. I think I’ve moved on from my Daenerys-plot-line panic.
THAT SAID.
I’m still struggling to understand how betraying Marcel was in-character for Teresa. There are so many other ways that they could have portrayed her downward tailspin into queenpin crisis than having her so quickly betray one of her CORE values that they’ve spent four seasons building up. Or at least, spin it for the audience so that it looks like that’s what it is--a huge betrayal of her core values. I mean, she’s been having to betray her values from Day 2 of linking up with Camila, shall we take a quick inventory? Like she tried to say the associate of Lopez’s who was trying to steal from them should go free and quickly learned that’s not how it works (a moment I circle back to below, btw). Over the last few seasons, she:
held the innocent maid hostage
killed the Leon brother who, mind you, James set up to betray
kidnapped and traded in the life of Rios to work with George
stole from the innocent cashier at the horse race who James then killed (and lectured her about how it was totally necessary to kill him)
turned on Lil T’s uncle without actual proof and got several of his men killed in their gunfight
sailed away without Guero and then didn’t try to find out what had happened to him
ordered Kelly Anne killed (but let Camila live?)
tortured and killed Marcel’s guy Bobby for no reason
turned Javier in to the Judge in order to protect her business
And that’s just skimming the surface; I haven’t even gotten into everything. In fact one of my least favorite scenes in the series is her basically putting her own life (and James’s, Pote’s, George’s...) at risk to free La Pena’s sex slaves, because it just felt inconsistent to me with her growing smarts and reluctant ability to compromise in order to play a long game and hold onto what matters most. Like, the gal knows this business isn’t for saints. What makes her different, and ultimately successful, are her instincts, her intelligence, her honesty and transparency, and her ability to own up to her mistakes. People trust her because of a combination of these things--she commands respect and loyalty because of them. And historically, when she’s been forced into corners and had to compromise in order to survive, we’ve gotten to see her figure out ways to take accountability later.
But this time it feels different. Which, I argue, it didn’t HAVE to be. Betraying Marcel in the grand scheme of things really isn’t the worst thing. He’s in the business too. He’s not the innocent maid from season 1. Pote was the first one to suggest it--push it, even, as the only choice she had--at the beginning of the episode, and even Kelly Anne looked like she was grudgingly agreeing by her face. Couldn’t turning Marcel in and letting him know they’d work out a plan to get him out be consistent with her character (and ultimately just a part of the reality of the business)?
But no, they had to make it an out of character thing by planting this whole James speech about how trustworthy she is right in front of it for contrast. I totally agree it was shitty. I also think it was dumb because (1) Pote’s reason for why Boaz shouldn’t be turned over was that he was too unreliable and might leak to the feds but SO WILL MARCEL IF HE FEELS BETRAYED, and (2) literally she’s just showed Boaz that he can get away with murder and won’t face consequences because she needs him too much so... I don’t see anything good coming out of that. How many notches do you think she’s dropped now in his respect for her? Like I fucking love Boaz’s character right now, he carries every scene he’s in, so I’m happy to see more of him, but that just felt really out of character for her. But not in the way the writers tried to show. It was out of character because it wasn’t actually in line with what has always guided her decision-making. And, I think that SAME decision could have been spun in a way that didn’t seem quite so out of character. She could’ve made the decision with her usual integrity and intent to follow through on a plan.
Instead they’re going down a “she’s going to be betraying her core values in a major way” path and I don’t love it. I think there is PLENTY of material to work with to show her going dark and to give us worry for her soul without going in this direction and it just feels a little bait-y. Even just turning away from anything resembling emotion; taking coke to deal with stressful decisions (turning in Boaz could’ve stressed her out to the point of using, too...); etc. could have provided room in the story for her to go dark. So I don’t know. It felt like it got super heavy super fast and I don’t like it when TV shows try to shock the audiences just for the sake of shocking us. She’s a complex and interesting enough character as it is without having to endure some major personality twist.
(Also, I get that James is supposed to be a character whose perspective totally changed on everything after Teresa came into his life; but the guy had no qualms about killing totally innocent people for the first two seasons of the show, so you can’t convince me he doesn’t also in SOME WAY “get” the realities of the business and the tough shit they have to do. That said, HIS FACE when the police came in and how the poor guy had to just stand there and watch. Good acting there. I don’t think his heart broke in disappointment, though. I think he felt let down, yeah, but I think he’s gotta be worried about her now. Worried for her heart and hopefully understanding a bit more about what it is she knows about herself that she’s wanting to protect him from by not being together with him. This isn’t a thing where he really has a leg to stand on in terms of like, feeling betrayed by her himself.)
Anyway, wow, this is getting long and rambly. Point is I don’t love this story-line but I’m hoping that by introducing it early enough in the season, they’ll find a way to have it turn around again. I hope there’s a redemption arc that is less “Teresa becomes a villain and then James rescues her soul” and is more “Teresa is put in the position of making one impossible decision after another, slowly crumbles, and has to crawl her way out of the darkness with the help of people she loves.” I don’t want to be led to hate her by season end. I want to still love her and root for her. The way they wrote the betrayal in this episode really doesn’t make her that lovable and I think that could’ve/should’ve been handled differently. I’d love to hear other opinions about that!
Other random thoughts:
where is George?! George, come back
I really would’ve loved to have seen the Judge under Teresa’s thumb for at least ONE episode, or a HALF of one episode, before getting decapitated
speaking of, that scene WAS pretty golden... the head in the box, the cop moving the box... lolol
James looking all “who, ME?!?!?!?!?!” when Marcel calls it like it is that he’s in love with Teresa... sorry bud, that look would not win you a poker game, you’re going to have to mask your feelings a LITTLE bit more if you’re trying to convince anyone you actually aren’t aware you’re in love with her
the pregnancy story-line - how is Teresa going to react?!?!?!
and Molly’s acting was great in that emotional scene with Pote
but much as I love Pote, I’m really not into it from his perspective -- Hemky’s acting isn’t working for me maybe, or it just feels way too OOC for Pote to be all gushy about the baby
I’m also pregnant right now so I’m like Kelly Anne how are you in the first trimester and not like FALLING OVER WITH EXHAUSTION all the time because that’s been my own and everyone I know’s first trimester experience lol
I missed Oksana in this episode too
I ALMOST FORGOT James’s car chase! That was great. So many great season 1 callbacks so far and we’re only in episode 3.
I also felt like the decision to let Boaz go was a callback to Camila’s very first lesson to her about Lopez’s associate... wrong decision, T. Wrong decision.
I love Marcel’s character, and Alimi Ballard, a lot and hope we still get to see a bunch more of him this season
By the way, I’ve decided to stop speculating about how this is going to end. I don’t want to theorize about whether Teresa actually dies or not, and if so, whether it’s James who kills her, or whether maybe Pote will actually die so that it can be KA and Pote who don’t get the happy ending leaving room for Teresa to get hers, or whether Teresa will become the villain of the season and we’ll all hope she dies, what have you. I don’t want to watch any of the episode promos because they don’t help me not freak out and I especially don’t want to see any leaks about anything coming up. I’m scrolling past things that are obviously spoilerish because those things are not helping my blood pressure this season lololol. YES I TAKE THIS SHOW EXTREMELY PERSONALLY.

George Weasley and the Girl in Ravenclaw: Part 7
A/N: Many blood mentions ( if you know Harry Potter, you know what this part will hold, SORRY)
As she thought, Raven and Harry were perfectly safe on the ground. Not a single Death Eater even approached their car. It was about an hour and a half’s drive from Harry’s house to the burrow and while Raven occasionally saw a flash of green light in the sky, she had to focus on the task at hand—getting Harry, the only one who could stop Voldemort, safe. As they approached the barrier around the burrow, Raven stopped the car and turned it off.
“Barrier is just up ahead. RUN, Harry!” Raven instructed to the younger wizard.
“Thank you,” Harry breathed out and was off in a flash through the field. Raven’s wand was pointed at the sky and around Harry in case of any Death Eaters, but there were none and she saw Harry disappear behind the invisible and disguising shield. She let out a breath and picked Hedwig up from the trunk and smiled at the snowy owl, who was fast asleep.
“You’re pretty cute,” Raven mumbled to herself and followed Harry through the barrier. Once she passed through, she saw him standing a few feet away.
“What was the last thing Harry Potter said to me?” Raven barked with her wand pointed at the Harry, seeing that his wand was also raised.
“I said thank you! How did I meet Raven?” Harry barked back, not satisfied with the question Raven had posed him with.
“After you caught the snitch against Ravenclaw, Fred and George introduced me to you,” Raven said calmly, and the pair lowered their wands.
“Sorry, had to be sure,” Harry said apologetically.
“I know, it’s good that you’re careful,” Raven said. “She’s sleeping.” Raven handed the bird cage to Harry, who had a bittersweet smile on his face.
“I don’t think I’ll be going to Hogwarts this year… Will you look after her for me?” Harry asked as the pair began to walk. Raven smiled and nodded.
“Of course. I’ll make sure she’s safe until this is all over,” Raven said. “I’ll be taking 2 galleons a week, so you better hurry up and sort this dark lord business out.”
Harry laughed and the pair made their way to the burrow where they saw Ginny and Molly at the front step.
“Raven, dear, if it’s you, I’m sorry,” Molly said as she pointed her wand at Raven.
“It’s okay, Molly. Ask your question,” Raven said with her hands instinctively up.
“What did I make you promise me before tonight?” she asked. Raven knew Ginny was treating Harry the same way, but was mostly focused on Molly.
“To look after Fred and George,” Raven said simply and with an ache in her chest.
“What happened? I was expecting Harry with Hagrid,” Molly said and pulled Raven into a hug.
“Last minute change of plans,” Raven confessed.
“A brilliant idea. We didn’t come across any trouble at all. Can’t say the same for others because we were on the ground,” Harry said as the four of them headed inside.
“Wait, nobody’s back yet?” Raven asked when she entered the burrow’s empty hold.
Ginny shook her head. “You’re the first ones.”  Raven’s heart clenched in her chest in fear. She thought about the bright green lights she saw in the sky on the way over, and feared the worst.
Suddenly, a crash and splashing sound was heard from outside. Raven rushed past Harry to see who had arrived.
“Hagrid!” Molly said. “Thank goodness you’re alright.”
“They were on us right from the start, Molly. An ambush of Death Eaters. Did Harry make it?” Hagrid asked.
“I’m here, Hagrid, don’t worry,” Harry said. Molly, Hagrid, Harry, and Ginny went inside while Raven searched the skies for a moment longer. Good thing, too, because she heard a pop to her right and saw Arthur carrying a bloodied Harry, who was slowly turning back into—
“George!” Raven yelled and rushed to help Arthur get him inside.
“My boy..!” Molly gasped out when she saw George’s bloodied head. As soon as George was laid down, Raven checked his vitals as she had learned in her lessons with Madam Pomfrey.
“George! George, can you hear me?” Raven desperately called.
“No,” George replied weakly. “Only on one side… Horribly annoying.”
“Okay, just stay there, I’ll be right back,” Raven said and ran to the washroom for supplies to clean and bandage his ear. By the time she had gotten back, more people had entered the burrow and were surrounding George.
“Move, move, move, move, move,” Raven repeated into the room as she carried armfuls of cleaning supplies and bandage materials.
“We’ve been betrayed… Voldemort knew you were being moved tonight,” Lupin said to Harry.
“Oh, no, I wonder who could have done such a thing. It is a mystery,” Raven said in a robotic and sarcastic voice as she cleaned the blood from George’s ear. Her heart was pounding and she saw George’s eyes open partially.
“Ven…” he said weakly to her. He lifted his hand and gently placed it against her cheek. “I was so worried.”
Raven’s eyes started to sting with tears and her chest heaved with every breath she took. “I’m here, George, I’m okay.” She saw his lip twitch upward in a smile and she continued to clean the dried blood from his ear. She felt someone kneel next to her and looked to see Fred with a worried expression. He looked relieved to see Raven, and turned his attention to George.
“How’re you feeling, Georgie?” Fred asked in a small voice.
“Saint-like,” George said in a weak and groggy voice.
Immediately understanding the joke, Raven let out a deep sigh. Fred looked as confused as ever, and asked, “Come again..?”
“Saint-like… I’m hole-y,” George said with a wider smile. “I’m hole-y, Fred. Get it?”
“You need morphine,” Raven concluded to herself and shook her head as George’s had pointed towards his ear that was now mostly rid of excess blood and was only oozing slowly now.
“The whole wide world of ear-related humor, and you go for ‘I’m hole-y’? That’s pathetic,” Fred said with a laugh.
“Reckon I’m still better looking than you,” George mused to his brother.
“It’s been cursed off, I don’t think I’ll be able to regrow it,” Raven said with a sorrowful sigh.
“It’s okay, I’m alive. I’ve got another ear. As long as you don’t find me totally hideous to look at…” George said to Raven with a hopeful smile.
“You’re still very handsome, George,” Raven said with a small smile and helped him sit up.
“Mad-Eye’s dead… Mundungus took one look at Voldemort and disapparated,” Bill said with a broken voice. Remus sat down and the room fell silent as all eyes were on Bill. Raven gave George a pain relief potion that would allow him to sleep through the night. He drank it down at once and Raven hoped that he’d be more comfortable soon.
Arthur poured firewhiskey for everyone and they all raised a glass to their late member. Raven felt George’s eyes on her and after she took a drink, she went back to bandaging his ear. His eyes never left hers even when she was focused on keeping the wound clean, dry, and protected.
“Never do that again,” George said. Raven looked at him with tensed brows.
“What?” she said.
“Never scare me like that ever again,” George said and Raven finished up the bandage. She noticed the room had vacated and they were alone.
“I’m FINE, George. If that curse had hit a few centimeters over, you’d be gone and I’d… I’d never forgive myself,” Raven said.
“But you had Harry. If they had caught wind that nobody up there that looked like Harry was actually Harry, they would have killed you. Not a second thought in their minds,” George said desperately.
A silence fell over them and Raven felt her heart beating faster as the thought of what could have been crept up on her. Her eyes stung and she let a few tears fall onto her lap and she felt George’s strong arms wrap around her and pull her close to him. He planted a kiss to her temple and she turned to look up at him.
“George, there’s something I need to tell you…” Raven said with her cheeks heating up.
George’s eyes fluttered closed and he laid limp on the couch, his drugs finally kicking in. The rise and fall of his chest signaled to Raven that he was fast asleep, and she knew he needed rest, so she didn’t want to wake him.
“I love you,” she whispered in George’s ear and gave his cheek a kiss before straightening him out and putting a blanket over him.

Police Violence and Brutality
Police Brutality is known as the excessive and unwarranted use of force by law enforcement. It is an extreme form of police misconduct or violence and is a civil rights violation. It also refers to a situation where officers exercise undue or excessive force against a person. Misconduct performed by police dates back to well before the early 2000’s. Early records suggest that labor strikes were the first large-scale incidents of police brutality in the United States, including events such as the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. Police violence is a leading cause of death for young men in the United States. Over the life course, about 1 in every 1,000 black men can expect to be killed by police. Risk of being killed by police peaks between the ages of 20 and 35 for men and women and for all racial and ethnic groups. Black women and men, American Indian, and Alaska Native women and men are significantly more likely than white women and men to be killed by police. Latino men are also more likely to be killed by police than are white men. With this being said, the chances of a Caucasian male or female to be killed by the police are 34% less probable than an African American male or female.
Recently in America, police violence and brutality has been significantly noticed towards many African American men and women. While there are many instances where other men and woman of other races have been victims of police brutality, there has been an all-time high in cases of police violence and brutality victimizing brown and black men and women.
A specific case I would like to touch on is the situation dealing with George Floyd. On May 25, Minneapolis police officers arrested George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, after a convenience store employee called 911 and told the police that Mr. Floyd had bought cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. Seventeen minutes after the first squad car arrived at the scene, Mr. Floyd was unconscious and pinned beneath three police officers, showing no signs of life. Protests were at an all-time high after the murder of George Floyd. Specifically in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Saint Paul, Outrage, frustration and grief were driving hundreds of protesters into the streets. For the first few days after the incident, demonstrations of protests in several populated cities in the United States of America evolved from peaceful cries for justice into violence and destruction. Specifically in Washington DC, the outraged crowds looted businesses and burned buildings as well as property of the Washington DC police department. The law enforcement had met the civil disorder with clouds of tear gas and rubber bullets.
Another devastating case of police violence and brutality escalated to the worst-case scenario where a young man, Deon Kay, was fatally shot by officers of DCPD. I personally knew the young man as I am a resident of Washington DC and attended high school with the young man. As far as I knew, he was a product of the brutal environment of Southeast, Washington DC. Growing up where Deon Kay and I grew up, there are many odd challenges to stay on the right path in life. One specific obstacle I remember being revealed in the case of Deon Kay was the murder of his father and younger brother as well as the death of his young mother. Many young men in the Southeast and Northeast area of Washington DC feel the need to protect themselves from their environment and the predators in them. In the case of Deon Kay, the young man felt the need to carry a gun on a day-to-day basis in order to feel safe while in his home area. When the DCPD officers got call that there was a young man in a car with a loaded firearm they went to the scene where Deon Kay was. The young man got out of the car and proceeded to try and evade the police while getting rid of the firearm that he carried on his person. When the young man flashed the gun to the officers chasing him, the officer took no hesitation to shoot Deon Kay in his back and once in his chest as he turned around after being stricken with the first few shots. There has been a large amount of speculation on whether or not the young man actually had a gun but since the situation has died down and there isn’t really any more attention on it.
My point in describing the severity of these two situations is to make you (the reader) feel the pain that other men and women of color feel everyday knowing that their safety may not be the first priority of law enforcement.

What comes to mind when you hear “time travel”?  Some may think of futuristic kevlar-armoured suits and quantum-powered machines, others picture romance in the Highlands from two or three centuries ago, travels to medieval times filled with magic, or changing —or protecting— major history events. Sure, everybody has heard of the Outlander series, Wells’ The Time Machine and A Wrinkle in Time, but here are some of my time-travel reads through the years.
All Our Wrong Todays, by Elan Mastai
Tumblr media
First novel of TV writer and producer Elan Mastai —name may ring a bell from This Is Us—, it depicts Tom, an unhappy man in an utopian future who is accidentally time-stranded in our 2016. I won’t spoil you any more of the plot, but let me say I wasn’t expecting this good of a book. I picked it up —bright colors and shiny spiral— at the publisher I was working at the time and though I expected something lighter, funnier, it captivated me from the first pages.
The Light Brigade, by Kameron Hurley **currently reading**
Tumblr media
This has been one of my women writer choices for this October and, as with Mastari’s book, it has captivated me from chapter one. Let me note here that I’m reading it in my native language and, since the cover rocks, I’m unapologetically putting it here —c’mon, you have to admit it’s better than the original!. Seeing the cover, one may think, too, that this is a sci-fi, light time-travel book. Well, let me stop you there. It starts hard, like a punch on the face, but I love how insightful it is, how inconspicuously reflects the best and worst of humanity in a far future that, space travel apart, is not that different from our reality. If you can, give it a try, because I think it truly deserves it.
Paper Girls, by B.K. Vaughman, C. Chiang, M. Wilson, J.K. Fletcher
Tumblr media
Great writer meets great art team in a time-traveling graphic-novel series with 80s vibe and aliens! The paper girls, a group of young teens who deliver the local newspaper on bikes, find themselves in a somewhat Orson-Welles-ian world. People disappear, strange creatures attack classmates and, at some point… they start time-traveling and meeting their future and past selves! Aaaaand I won’t be spoiling any more of the plot, feel free to read it if you wanna know more!
Old Magic, by Marianne Curley
Tumblr media
Precedent YA novel from the early 2000, depicts a romance between two students who, unknowingly, are connected through magic, a magic that’s going to send them through time to find their powers… and their love. Very light and cute on the romance, I read it when I was 12 or maybe 13 during a family weekend trip to the mountains and I couldn’t put it down. I still remember when I finished it, I was left feeling that melancholy of a good book, that leaves you wanting more.
All Souls Trilogy, by Deborah Harkness
Tumblr media
Back when Twilight was still a thing, there was a wave of romance novels with vampires and other magical creatures involved for all ages. I remember coming across this massive hardback novel on April 23rd (here in Barcelona, Saint George’s is a big day) and completely falling for it. I took it with me on summer vacation and I read it all day long… Even in the car! Although the first book is all set in modern day, the second book takes the main characters, a witch and a vampire, to the Elizabethan period, in an intrigue-filled narrative with guest appearances such as Shakespeare or Marlowe.
The Midnight Library, by Matt Haig
Tumblr media
Last but not least, our last Fa3 book from last month. Ok, I know what you’re thinking, I roasted it on the review… But mental health issues aside, it poses quite an interesting time-travel slash alternate reality dilemma, and though the idea is not the newest, most surprising take, it is nice to see time travel applied to other, not-that-typical genres. In the end, who wouldn’t want to get a second —or third, or fiftieth— try at their lives?
These are some of the thousands and thousands of books on time-travel… Which is your favourite? Join us in the debate!

cake asks: chocolate, coffee, lemon
Chocolate : Do you like the rain? Tough question. Yes but no but yes but no. If it suits my mood, sure. And I dig a good summer thunderstorm. But sometimes I'm just miserable, especially in winter rains when I have to run in and out of my car and this building and that place. If I can stay in and look at it and not feel cold and miserable, it's fine. But if I have to deal with trying to close my umbrella as I get into the car and have that water drip all over me despite my best efforts, no. Fuck it.
Coffee: Book that reminds you of your childhood? Saint George and the Dragon by by Margaret Hodges and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman.
My copy all kinds of torn to pieces because I had it read to me so much and then read it myself and then startled my British Lit professor (who also taught OE and Chaucer) by knowing way more of The Faerie Queene than she expected. (I did that a few times in college, hmm...)
It's a surprisingly bloody book during the battle between George and the dragon but that never bothered me. I think I thought it was dramatic and much less "safe" than a lot of picture books that dodged that sort of thing. Like our protagonist gets hurt, seriously hurt, and it takes a magic apple tree and a magic spring and Una's intense prayers to keep him alive.
Anyway, if I could have married, I would have wanted a dress like Una's at the end of the book. It's described as "shimmering" which did weird things to my maybe-maybenot synesthesia.
Also I learned years later that the back cover includes a self-portrait of Trina Schart Hyman as a scribe. I love that whole scene on the back cover too, though.
Lemon: Opinions on snails I knew this was going to come up, gosh.
I actually like snails. I had (still have) a snail shell when I was a little kid and I have no idea where it came from, but the colors are so soft and so pretty--all gray and pale orange and even a little pink. And I'm totally fascinated by the giant snail that some people keep as pets (like "please my rabbit is sick") because that's up there in my mind with sphinx cats and frogs and so on. And there are tiny ones that I've found in gardens before that are all fragile and brown. And there are sea snails that have lots of colors and poisons. I remember I loved the giant pink sea snail from the (admittedly terrible) Disney iteration of Doctor Doolittle because riding on a snail sounded great.
Like, I get it that snails can harm certain plants, and that's not so great if things are out of balance and too many snails eat too many plants, but I do like them. They're peculiar with their eyestalks and their shells and their rainbow slime trails. You can say "snail, snail, put out your horn and I will give you a bushel of corn" and they're supposed to come out of their shells. And you can put some snails on a piece of brown paper overnight and they'll trace out the initials of your future love on the paper. And you can protect them from being decimated by migrating birds by not raking your yard, so take that HOA! I am protecting the gastropods.
So, yes, I like snails.
Ask me things, if you feel so inclined...

Of Dust and Ashes (chapter 4)
Pairing: Eventual clint x ofc
chapter warnings: (yes, this again) death, gun violence, references to what happens to those who breath the dust.
And! We get to check in with Clint this chapter. See how hes doing. Because, aren’t you curious how he was holding up in the first few weeks? I was. Thank @winterisakiller for not killing me to stop me from killing characters. And thank @tnystrk-exe for encouraging me to kill characters.
Chapter 4: The road to a new life
~~~~~<3
Ten Days Post Decimation
~~~~~<3
Deanna carefully navigated the large RV down the road behind Lewis’. In time she knew it would get easier to drive the beast but right now, it felt like she was driving a tank that was at risk of tipping over at the slightest bump. As she drove, she had Frankie’s blanket draped over her shoulders and Aurora’s stuffed fox in her lap. Absently she would reach down and pet the worn fur along the fox’s back.
Lewis signaled that they would be turning left and she absently followed him. Eventually she was going to have to start thinking for herself, she was sure of that. But right now all she wanted to do was check out and let him take the lead.
The RVs rolled and rocked over the uneven pavement in the parking lot she had no memory of entering as they came to a stop. She was far more focused on keeping her breathing even and pushing every nonessential thought away. Each breath mattered  more than what horrors her mind could bring her if she let it roam free.
Deanne reached down and grabbed the gallon jug of orange juice and took a long drink from it. The sky had cleared up and it was looking to be a nice day even if the haze seemed to hang on the horizon. It was peaceful and the engines were quite for their size, doing little to disturb the peace. She closed her eyes and simply enjoyed the warmth of the sun through the windshield and the taste of the juice, focused on that and that alone.
There was a thump as Lewis’ door slammed shut. He raised his hands high over his head and stretched, a groan slipping out of him as tension was pulled out of his torso. The sun was warm on him and he told himself that it was going to be a good day. Today was going to be a good day because he would make it so. There was no reason to dwell on the past when he was moving forward.
“Hey Dee, Come on. Let’s get inside and get on the road soon.” There was an almost sing-song quality to his voice that made her smile.
For just a moment she allowed herself to pretend peaceful it was just another summer day and that she was just another woman and it was until everything went sideways.
~~~~~<3
There was a sharp crack that filled the air, jarring her from her peaceful relaxation. It was loud and for a moment Deanna wondered what the hell it was Lewis was doing out there. The sound came again and again and yelling filled the air. Deanna was up out of her seat and had the door open in an instant. She leaned out and looked up toward where Lewis’ driver’s side door was open.
Lewis stumbled toward her, red blossoming on his too nice blue dress shirt. As he tripped over his feet, moving toward her, he reached and patted his abdomen and pulled his red stained hand back and looked dumbly at it. Another crack filled the air and he fell hard against the body of the RV.
A man ran forward as Deanna tried to process what was happening in front of her eyes and failed. Before she could look at the running man, Lewis grabbed her attention. He was waving his arm at her, motioning for her to do something. What she should have been doing was escaping her. All she could see was blood.
“Go!” His voice finally reached her ears as he yelled and waved for her to leave him.
“I can’t.” She was out two steps. “I can’t leave you.”
“Go.”
Another crack filled the air and while she could do nothing but watch, the side of Lewis’ neck ripped open. Red poured down the side of his neck in a waterfall and quickly soaked the left side of the blue shoulder and sleeve of his shirt only to quickly merge with the large red stains in the middle.
Lewis slipped down the side of his RV inch by painful inch. A shaking hand went to his neck in a helpless effort to slow the bleeding. What for, she couldn’t begin to guess. It was a lost cause.
If she called for an ambulance, would one make it in time? Would one even come at all? Perhaps it was simply reaction and survival instincts driving the action as he lowered himself to the ground one small shuffling step at a time, leaving a smeared trail of bright red that seemed almost cartoonish above his head. She always expected blood smears to be a darker shade of red than what was on the side of the RV.
The man ran closer and her throat froze when she tired to call out to him for help Lewis. Clutched in the man’s hand was a heavy looking handgun. With a start, she realized it was again Mr. Taft doing everything that a teacher shouldn’t do. He didn’t even stop to check Lewis’ condition.
Another man was in the doorway of the sports store and Deanna didn’t wait to see if it was another teacher. Swallowing the bile that threatened to spill from her throat, she backed into the cab of the RV and slammed the door shut. The doors clicked locked automatically as she threw it into gear. Everything violently rocked as she took off less than gently.
Mr. Taft leaned out of what had been Lewis’ RV and yelled. The words were lost to her over the roar of the blood rushing in her ears. Distantly, or so it seemed at least, the crack of gunfire reached her ears but she paid it no mind. The only thing that mattered was getting away. She had to get away from this insanity. Far away.
She drove and drove, not stopping until the city fell away around her and gave way to large open tracks of land. When the road was empty and not a building was within sight, she finally pulled herself to a jerky halt. In the cabinets and storage spaces, things rattled and clanked into eachother.
For a moment she simply sat with her hands gripping the wheel, knuckles white with the effort. Then everything became too much and she pushed the door open with more force than required and all but fell out of the cab as the system pinged repeatedly, reminding her that the engine was still running while she emptied her guts with one painful heave after another. She retched as the bile mixed with the citric taste of the orange juice covered her tongue.
When her stomach was empty she stumbled back, sitting down hard on the step of the cab with her head hung limply. Reaching up with trembling hands she warped them around the back of her head, curling in on herself more as the reality of what had happened only a few short hours ago dawned on her.
She had watched one of her children’s teachers kill a man- he was hardly more than a boy really. She watched him die. If she closed her eyes she could still see how the blood poured out of him and they didn’t even seem to care.
The interstate should be busy at this hour yet not cars drove by. The silence was eerie as she sat there, tears drying now on her face.
This was the world she would live in now. This was the world after the decimation. As she sat, Deanna wondered if had she not put her children on the bus that morning, could she protect them in this new world? She wasn’t even sure she could protect herself, she had no weapons. Deanna wondered if it wasn’t a painful blessing that her two children
Running her hands through her hair, Deanna looked up at the hazy blue sky. The sun was warm on her face as she pulled herself together. Silently, she said a prayer for Lewis and all those like him who were spared turning to dust only to die violently. She said a prayer for her children who suffered the same type of fate.
On shaking lags, she pushed herself to stand and slowly made her way into the cab. After a glance up and down the road, she decided she was safe enough for now and killed the ignition With the beeping silenced, she pulled the door closed. Moving into the back, she carefully walked down the narrow path into the bathroom and brushed her teeth.
When she sat back down in the driver’s seat, she had half a mind to throw out the jug of Orange juice. The thought of it alone was enough to make her stomach roll. Yet she had no choice but drink it- there was no room to stash it in the refrigerator and she simply refused to waste a valuable resource.
Just Over Two Weeks Post Decimation
~~~~~<3
In the time that followed, Deanna slowly made her way farther East. Before long, she had guns stashed in the front and back of the RV and made strides toward perfecting the art of parking the RV far enough off the road to be unseen. It was always better to go unseen, the world had become a dangerous place.
On the radio she would sometimes catch news broadcasts reporting a country fractured. King Manson was seizing control of the coastal area in the west, leaving bloodshed in his path. There were others like him in the south but he was the largest it seemed. Faceless, nameless bands of thieves roamed the highways, each trying to do just as Mason was- take control of some land and secure some security for themselves at the cost of others.
She wished she could say that she’d never fired any of her guns at another human being in the last week but that wasn’t the case, each shot intended only to scare those who intended to do her harm back. As the days marched on, she had done what she had to do to survive, drawing on the plans Lewis had spoke of. She had picked up a trailer shortly after she crossed the Nevada state line.
~~~~~<3
In Saint George, Utah she found the town largely empty. On the buildings she found scriptures painted in messy brush strokes. On other buildings were messages left by the faithful who had left their homes behind. They had gone south and advising her to pick up a bible and to follow. The sight made the hair on her arms stand on end.
She wondered if these people were still alive and if this was the biblical rapture for a moment before pushing the thought away. She couldn’t say if she believed in God. Like many, her thoughts on that subject had become confused with the discovering of the reality of the Norse Gods Thor and Loki. There was many who found faith lacking, not knowing the exacts of who or what they had been praying to. Others found renewed faith in a God they could see, a God they knew was real. Faith in the Norse Gods had been growing in the years since Thor had become known.
She made it a habit to park on the outskirts of town. It was a lesson she had quickly learned to not draw attention to herself. A thirty plus foot RV running around all over town would draw every bit of attention. Though it looked deserted, she couldn’t ever know for sure. Most of what she found in these deserted towns was elderly and disabled people, simply waiting for death to take them while they try and survive as best they could.
She parked on a back road just far enough away from town to feel safe. Or at least as safe as she could ever feel near buildings. She wanted to be close enough to homes with parked cars that she could avoid spending the whole of her day walking. Locking up her home after slipping a gun onto her hip, she started out.
There was a chill in the early morning air, giving just a hint of how summer was beginning to fade in the higher elevations. She huddled deeper into her jacket as she quickly began to approach the first house she spotted with a parked truck and overgrown grass. Crouching down, she carefully made her way closer.
A truck was in the drive and there didn’t appear to be any new tracks. Still, she watched for signs of life. In the distance a deer grazed on the edge of the lawn but otherwise the world around her seemed dead. Still, she waited. The curtains in the window moved, or so she thought. It just as easily could have been her mind playing tricks on her. Deanna had begun to see demons in the shadows and darkened homes. Perhaps this was how madness started? If she’d ever get the chance to ask a Norse God, perhaps Loki could tell her. He was mad himself, after all.
The wind blew dust around her and rustled the trees. The air smelled fresh and she couldn’t help looking toward the sky. The haze had begun to fade from the sky as the dust had slowly began to settle. On the roof, painted in red was a bible verse she didn’t care to read. If there was an even a God, he had turned his back on her the day he allowed her children to burn before her eyes.
Peeking into the window, she watched for signs of life. Inside was a mess, trash spilled everywhere. There was a commotion of thumps and scratching as a large dog jumped into the window. A scream locked in her throat and though she tried to keep to on, it echoed through the empty land when it ripped forth.
The black and brown fur did nothing to hide the way the creature’s ribs, hips and spine all protruded from the body. Jumping on the window and looking out at her, she could see the tail wagging excitedly. The beast was indifferent to the heart attack he had given her.
It seemed safe enough to assume the house was empty and abandoned by the state of the excited dog. The door was unlocked and when it opened she had expected the dog to rush out and run off. Instead he simply danced around her, jumping excitedly and tail lashing back and forth in a blur. Though the creature was clearly half starved, he seemed to care more about greeting her than running off.
After he danced around her legs for a few hyperactive moments, he dashed inside  and Deanna followed, though clearly not fast enough for him. The dog came prancing back toward her to dart around her legs some more, nearly tripping her.
“Hello?” Silence was all that answered her.
The dog showed her toward a pantry door in the kitchen. When she opened it the dog barreled inside and wasted no time ripping into a bag of dog kibble.
She left him to his meal and instead started opening cabinets and searching for supplies. While it was clear the house had gone untouched since the inhabitants had probably turned to dust, there was little in the way of food stores. Clearly, this family wasn’t one for cooking.
She found some dried pasta in the pantry and a few gallons of water. Both were tossed onto the counter behind her. Overall the shelves were fairly empty. There was an opened box of pancake mix and instant potatoes but when she peeked inside she found the dried up bodies of dead bugs inside. Figures. These people didn’t know to transfer that sort of thing to a nice air tight container so when the end of the world happened, the woman scavenging through their home would have pancake mix and instant potatoes to feed herself with for a few days.
Oddly enough, she found herself cursing these people who had left the world in a rain of dust almost two weeks ago, people she did not know. She cursed them under her breath as she gathered some candles and searched for keys to the truck parked outside. If they had bothered to keep their pantry stocked and boxes sealed she would have found more things useful for her.
“Huzzah!” The cheer brought the dog running to her side, wagging his tail as keys jingled in her hand.
Absently, she ran her hand along his too thin back as she moved back into the house, grabbing up what few boxes of pasta she found. The dog followed. She took them to the small back seat of the truck outside. The dog followed. She quickly grabbed the jugs of water, all three and went back outside, putting them inside the truck as well. The dog followed.
“Are you going to follow me everywhere?” The dog barked and she rolled her eyes. The dog danced around her once more before jumping into the passenger seat. “No, get out. I’m not taking you with.”
The dog barked.
“Out.” As if to drive her point home, she pointed to the ground next to her.
The dog barked.
Throwing her hands up in the air, Deanna came to the realization that she now had a dog. This was how people ended up cat owners but apparently it works for dogs in this new world. Turning, she went back into the house to rummage through the kitchen, looking for containers to put the dog’s food in.
It took some time but she was able to stumble upon a few larger containers. It would have to do for now until she could scavenge something something that would fit better. She scooped up the spilled food the best she could and tossed in the dog’s food and water dishes. The last thing she needed was one more thing to take care of while she waited a few weeks for the world to start righting itself. It would just be a few more weeks, wouldn’t it?
The power gird in this town had failed and so she wanted to get a move on quickly. She wouldn’t waste her time looking through freezers for supplies- everything would be spoiled. Meat turned quickly and flies would be buzzing about. Part of her mind wanted to remind her what else flies would be buzzing about in some of the homes but she pushed it away. Thoughts like that did no good.
While from what she had seen the small city looked to be abandoned, she knew better than to trust in it. A truck driving around could draw attention during the day but the lights needed to navigate the dark streets would draw even more eyes toward her. It was all a balance of risks.
With the dog in the passenger seat, she pulled out of the drive. The trip to the town was uneventful, all in all. The road into town was smooth and yet she still kept a slow pace. It was better, slower movement drew less attention. On her hip sat the pistol that had become her constant companion. The dog whined and drew her eyes to him. It looks like she has a new companion, one that she wouldn’t feel bad talking to.
Without much thought she turned into a garden store. It was large and greenhouses were lined up outside, covered in a heavy dust. The doors were locked but much like the house she had just come from, it looked just as abandoned as the house she had just come from. A large rock made breaking the glass door easy enough.
The trip to New York felt like a waste of time. It was so largely unproductive that it was frankly comical. It had been creepy and unsettling to be flying through American airspace and not having a single plane on the radar. They had yet to manage to get in touch with Tony and the simply reality that none of them wanted to face was that he could be dead.
Dr. Stephen Strange could be dead. Peter Parker could be dead. Tony could be dead.
If Clint could have his whole family turn to dust, it wasn’t unreasonable to fear the same for Tony, Strange and Peter. That was assuming that where ever they had ended up in the space doughnut, they survived long enough to be dusted in the snap. There were other more painful ways to die.
Now as his boots kicked up the layer of dust that had settled on his field, he walked away from the small jet. It was hard not to think about what that dust had been. As the days went by, it got harder to ignore the haze in the distance. In a way it was almost nice to be back at his home, away from the heavy dust cloud that clung to the cluster of buildings that was New York City.
The air was hard to breath in the city. The team had worked hard through their worry, pain and defeat to quickly distribute masks to all those they could locate but there were still many suffering from the poor air quality. It was just one more way Thanos was claiming lives of people who had already suffered so much from the repercussions of his actions.
Those with compromised breathing were dropping like flies in areas with dense populations and what remained of The Avengers were only working the east coast. The dust was found to behave much like ash when mixed with water. The paste that would form in the lungs if exposed to too much air born dust was much like concrete, thickening until they suffocated on the goop.
Clint sat down on the dusty ground in front of the shed he had been sleeping in for the better part of the last two weeks and tried to pull himself together. It seemed he was always on the edge of breaking down, shattering into a million pieces. He couldn’t stomach the thought of going into the farmhouse, to sleep in the bed he shared with Laura when they were all gone. Sleep had been fleeting at the best of times.
Sometimes, in the middle of the night he would wake swearing that he had heard them. In his sleep deprived state he would search the farmhouse, search the lands and never find them. He would spend hours searching, making his way into the town at times. His anguished screams when he realized what he was convinced had surely been a twisted nightmare brought on by too much work and coffee was a reality he wanted no part in would echo over the hills during the night.
