Glittering Insects—S-T (Mind Meld)

GLITTERING INSECTS- S/T LP by Total Punk Records

Three Atlanta punks from G.G. King’s band want it darker. Where 2021’s Remain Intact was “woozy but ear-wormy, slurred and snarled but inescapably tuneful”, this debut from Glittering Insects tamps down the hookiness to ghostly choruses. They rise like sewer steam from urban pavements that seethe with menace.

The band—Greg King, Ryan Bell and Josh Feigert—always intended this project to be different from the G.G. King Band or the Carbonas or Predator or Wymyns Prysyn or any of the other bands these mainstays of southern garage rock have inhabited before now. And indeed, it is more ominous and murkier than their prior work. “Peat Gurgling” blots out the light with its subterranean bass lead, launching screaming flares of guitar over the murk. “Obscure World of Death” whispers threats over the clang and roar of rock noise. A thick blanket of echo nudges some of these cuts dub-ward, as in the driving, chaotic instrumental “Nuclear Winter,” where squalling guitar careens over strobe-pulsing bass and drums, and indeed, the instrumental roil and thrash seems to be kind of the point here. The track called “Glittering Insects” (every band gets one, right?) throbs and thrashes like an animal caught in a trap, all frenetic motion and angst.

There are moments of respite. “Garden of Souls” runs close to lyrical, like a Greg Ashford solo psychedelic blues, with a mother-and-child spoken world interval at its calming end. Children figure, too, in “Dream Journal” which stretches out a narrative about making music and anticipating a child’s birth against a nodding, surreal dissonance.

Whether frenzied or down tempo, though, these tracks hover just out of focus, like a memory or a dream of the rock songs they are. “Screaming Ghosts Pt 1” floats a whisper over sludgy distortion, coaxes a cracked chorus out of buzz and turmoil. There’s a xylophone picking out notes towards the end, a clean sound amid a diesel churn. That’s one single. The other is “Calcified Time,” all blistered, down-sloping riff, blur-speed drumming and slurred far-off singing. A fist-pumping anthem shoulders its way out of the murk, but it’s always slipping back into an acid bath of noise. The insects glitter only for a moment, and then they die.
