Welcome to animanga stuff!
As you can probably tell this is just a blog where I post either my favorite characters or other people's favorites to avoid clogging up my main!
Anyone is welcomed to interact with this blog but please understand that I will block freely.
Although I will mostly be focusing on anime and manga, you are free to request other medias as well, just as long as it's not live action.
As stated in my bio requests for characters will always be open until I say otherwise, however please make sure to be specific on where the character is from and if you want manga panels or anime screenshots.
Ex: "Hello! May you please post some anime screenshots of Tanjiro Kamado from Demon Slayer?"
And this part is optional but if you want screenshots from a specific chapter or episode say that as well, the more specific the better!
Please note: If I feel uncomfortable with the characters source material I simply will refuse your request as I have the rights to do so.
Note #2: Also understand that I am human, I may take a bit to get to some requests, but trust me they will be done. This blog is NOT my job but purely a fun thing I'm doing.
Okay I believe I covered all the basics lol, but if you have any questions or concerns feel free to shoot me a message in my inbox!

Listen. All I'm saying is—
Cardcaptor Shizuka AU.
Everything in YGO canon remains the same except Shizuka, age 13, finds the book of Clow Cards in her grandma's old library and manages to open it. Cards scatter everywhere in a huge gust of wind, and a golden lion currently taking the form of a little plush toy awakens.
Only Shizuka can't really see him very well, because this is before she has her surgery. (And before her surgery is even on the table, really.)
Like, okay, she can kind of see him. She can see that there is a blurry mass of yellow floating in her face, and since her hearing is fine, she knows that thick Osakan accent is coming from the blurry yellow mass. But that's about it.
"If ya can't see, what were you doin' in a library?" the yellow mass, who has introduced himself as Keroberos, demands.
"Some of Grandma's books are in braille. I was looking for one of those," Shizuka says, although that's not really true. Something was calling to her in the library, something she couldn't quite put her finger on. Something wanted her to open that book.
"Well, I never thought the Cardcaptor would be blind," Keroberos—and really Shizuka thinks she might call him Kero-san for short—says. "But where there's a will, there's a way. Congratulations, kid—you're the new Cardcaptor!"
Of course, Shizuka has no idea what that means, but she soon finds out.
See, at first Shizuka protests because she doesn't have magical powers. Kero-san ("It's Keroberos!") is mistaken. When he points out that she couldn't have opened the book without magic, she reminds him that she's legally blind and will eventually lose her sight completely.
"Don't worry, I'll direct you. Just consider me your seeing-eye Clow guardian," Kero-san says.
And direct her he does, because when the Clow Cards start causing trouble around Hanafuda City—well, someone has to deal with them, and Shizuka is the only magical girl around. It's far from easy, but with Kero-san acting as her eyes and her staff in hand, Shizuka manages to capture The Windy, The Watery, The Mirror, The Jump, The Fly, The Shadow, and The Shield before her brother calls.
Because that's the thing with this AU: it overlaps with Battle City.
Thankfully, there are no Card crises while Shizuka has her surgery or during her recovery. The biggest challenges are the lengths of time that Kero-san has to pretend to be a plush toy, something that gets exponentially worse for him when Honda and Otogi pick Shizuka up from the hospital and take her to meet with the rest of the group.
The idea here is . . . Kero would absolutely recognize the Millennium magic as magic, and as powerful and tbh evil magic at that, much different than what Shizuka can do and more than she can tackle at the moment with her limited cards. There are times when I think Shizuka would still be tempted to try to do something, anything, but ultimately she would keep her magic secret and vow to get the rest of the Cards and learn more magic so the next time something like this happens, she CAN help.
That said, people who can sense her magic even if they can't quite pinpoint it are: Atem, Yuugi, Bakura, Ring Spirit, Malik, Isis
People who are suspicious af about Kero are: Jounouchi
People who think Jounouchi is being stupid by being suspicious of a plush toy are: Honda, Otogi, Anzu
People who secretly think Kero is cute and wish they had a plush toy of their own are: Mokuba
Anyway, when Battle City is over, the reason Shizuka doesn't join the rest for the Millennium World arc is because she had to return to Cardcapting (and also middle school). She does get the rest of the Cards and becomes their master. I don't know where Yue fits into this, but I imagine he must be someone also in Hanafuda.
A couple other things:
— I don't know how possible this is because I've never used one, but I like to imagine Shizuka would use a braille writer to put her name on the cards in kantenji (a.k.a. braille kanji), especially since her first handful of cards were before her surgery. Like I don't know if you could stick cards into a braille writer, but also this is a story about magic cards so let's go with it.
— I do think Shizuka does eventually tell at least Jounouchi about her magic. Or like I think she'd show him, perhaps with a card like The Glow. He mighr freak a bit at first because he hates occult stuff, but this isn't any more occult than Atem, a literal actual ghost, was so he'd be fine after a second, especially since The Glow is really pretty. Plus his baby sis is a superhero!! How cool is that??
— Kero and Jounouchi have a lot of personality traits in common, so tbh I think they'd get along even if they occasionally butt heads. More importantly though, Kero would remind Shizuka of her brother which means he would be a good guardian for her.
Anyway, I just think Shizuka deserved more than whar canon gave her, that she's every bit as brave and strong as her big brother (even if in a quieter way) and that she deserved more time to shine, so. Cardcaptor Shizuka was definitely happening behind the scenes and no one can convince me otherwise.
#yugioh#kawai shizuka#cardcaptor shizuka#fic fix#kind of not really#Shizuka calls him Kero-san bc she's less familiar / outgoing than Sakura#(at least at first . . . she might warm up to a Kero-chan)#and she doesn't tell Jou abt her magic during Battle City bc well#there was a lot going on#Jou died for a brief time there & that was after two (2) attempts on his life#there just wasn't time for ''I'm a magical girl & my plush toy is my familiar''#so that had to come later#but anyway

The thing with DouWata in Holic is that it would be bittersweet either way because of two reasons, even discounting Watnuki choosing to stay forever on the shop bc he's waiting for Yuuko in a kind of sunk cost fallacy way by the end of it.
1. Watanuki origins as O!Syaoran of Tsubasa substitute/not-exactly-a-clone in their world, which also means sharing the price for getting C!SyoSaku feathers out of that void he ends up with O!Syaoran at the end of Tsubasa, and paying for his anomaly continued existence. Syaoran has to keep jumping between worlds for an indefinite mount of time, and Watanuki also has to stay in one place for the same time.
Now, by Rei(I think it was Rei? Could been Rou who knows) we discover that the price was too heavy bc Watanuki was baby wish shopkeeper (and also a masochist who believes he doesn't deserve to have happiness or have a right to exist deep down), and that at some point he grows powerful enough that his existence is no longer so precarious he needs the shop interdimensional stability.
This means at the end of Holic he would have had to enter the shop as essentially a prisoner anyway; Yuuko did the most to bring his power up and to give him connections with the living world so he would keep going on, but she did set Watanuki as her successor bc it was necessary for his continued existence.
And this brings us to...
2. Watanuki grew powerful enough to physically the shop without repercussion (his dream-wandering doesn't count bc his body is anclated on reality I guess) about 100 years after entering it. By then our Doumeki has been dead for at least a decade or two minimum, if we think he lived a long life.
By being the wish-shopkeeper he has enough power he can slow down his aging to the point he's frozen in time a la Eriol of Cardcaptor. And that's when he just took the role at the end of Holic.
And given Eriol is half of Clow's soul and powers and still ridiculously powerful and Yuuko was said to be almost as good, good enough to keep up with whole Clow Reed and Watanuki is her heir and of the line of Clow himself, and his parents did something to make him look more like Clow and not like SyoSaku which may had implied effects on his metaphysical existence bc Tsubasa and Holic go on ridiculous paradox territory...
Watanuki is the kind of powerful magician who, in just being heir to Yuuko's shop, without needing to tie himself to it to the point he cannot go out like in canon, (which meant he needed to develop his power a huge amount just to be able to exist as a paradox bc Fei Wang Reed) would have outlived Doumeki by a large large large amount of years anyways. Think of Fai "has lived already many times your lifespan" Flourite re: Kurogane.
The point of Fai keeping the vampire blood and prey bond with Kurogane, even after he gets his eye back from C!Syaoran and his magic suppresses his bloodlust (bc vampirism isn't the only thing keeping his old ass going anymore lol) is that Kurogane now gets to live the long long lifespan of Fai's life with him, bc otherwise he would have died in a fraction of the amount of time of Fai's existence.
Doumeki and Watanuki don't have that kind of plot handed pass to long-lived married bliss. Which sound pretty 'wtf' bc KuroFai lives were terrible (specially Fai's) in a way DouWata backstories don't go near bc they're more grounded on modern Japan, ghost, witches and wish-shops included. But they get to be together for the next centuries or so they have left.
At best, DouWata could have kind of the Wish deal of Kohaku finding again Kudou after he keeps reincarnation, which the end of Rou plays with anyways, only we know Haruka and Shizuka weren't the same soul, and so Sayaka is just the next link of weird generation xeroxes of the Doumeki family...
Disgressing.
Going back to the start of this post. Holic would have had a bittersweet kinda ending regardless of if Watanuki keep on wishing to see Yuuko again and so keeping himself trapped on the shop (and that's just tragic not bittersweet bc even Watanuki must know by then, 100 years after everything, that's kinda impossible) bc:
1. Tsubasa's plot being intertwined with Holic demanded Watanuki to pay a price for a wish, and that made him sacrifice his ability to move out the shop and into the world.
2. He was powerful from the start but the way he needed to learnt how to use his powers so spirit's wouldn't follow him and reality itself wouldn't erase him, which meant, learning how to be Yuuko's successor made him measure his lifespan on centuries anyways.
I think he maybe could have capitalized on his fated (hitsuzen) connection with Doumeki, and the way they exchanged eyes and blood, etc, so if Doumeki made a wish to link his lifespan to Watanuki in a less tragic version of Holic where Wata learnt some healthy selfishness and wasn't keen on waiting forever for Yuuko trapped on the shop (that is, where he wasn't exactly Watanuki lol) it could been possible for these two to have a happy-ish ending.
The price would have been something awful or heavy, maybe both of them are trapped on the shop until Doumeki mortal family is dead bc he's severing his mortal links to follow weird powerful Watanuki to the sobrenatural so he's giving up any chance on a mortal life?? and he also takes on a bit of wata's existence price by result of the link?? So they may get out earlier than 100 years but not by much I think...
Watanuki in canon would never see the above as possible, bc he doesn't see it as worthy, himself as worthy, and also its pretty fucked up anyways bc Doumeki would be giving up almost everything. But Holic has always been about obsession, and the way Doumeki dedicates his life and family line to Watanuki amounts to the same in the end I think. I have a feeling Doumeki would make that bargain gladly if he could stay with Watanuki for the rest of their (now long long) lives.
It would also tie back to the "sharing burdens" (and thus wishes' prices) theme DouWata have going on until Watanuki pulls his, "I'm now alone and the shopkeeper and I must pay alone, and goodbye to any hope of a normal life, bc the only motherly-ish protector-type person I've loved who loved me back has left me all alone, and my existence was a failure of the universe bc space-time shaneaningans."
But yeah DouWata had no chance from the start on an uncomplicated happy ending, and it irks me when people point to Watanuki as the only architect of his misfortune. Like. NO. They would been fucked some way or another in the end. The two asholes don't make it better on themselves, and bear some responsibility for how they end up tragically star-crossed without making a fucking move, but they were doomed from the start.
You could say it was..
Hitsuzen.
#douwata#xxxholic#CLAMP#watanuki kimihiro#doumeki shizuka#tsubasa reservoir chronicle#meta#clamp meta#my thoughts#Lol it was very satisfactory#To end in hitsuzen#but yeah#this is the gist of it for me#the way the plot was constructed with trc#made it impossible for Watanuki to choose to not like#develop his powers and become functionally immortal anyway#by the nebulous clamp rules of magic#onmyoji and other kind of seers/mediums#don't have that problem and he could have stayed on the power level at the start#I feel#but once you know of the inestabily of the multiverse#and how he need to pay for balancing it#until hes powerful enough#and he starts training under Yuuko#he starts approaching wizard/magician level#who can toy with space-time and create worlds#even if they're only dream-worlds#Watanuki pulls some powerful shit on Rei for tsubasa world chronicle#once he's at that level??#he's at eternally young until he gets killed or wills himself to die shit

EAH VA/Seiyuus Part 2
For @sayuricorner's AU. Link to Part 1 here.
Same rules as my previous post, but I decided to look into more Japanese VA/Seiyuu's for this one. I also found a link for the Latin America VAs that I'll drop here because I had the hardest time finding Prudence and Charlotte's English VA (Erin Fitzgerald voices both of them) for some reason and they list both the English and LA VAs there.
Again this will be long so it's under the cut. Enjoy!

Oh how I missed this
Not many tumblr blog still post about CLAMP works and it's a shame
I have been informed that many don't know about CLAMP manga so let me show you the beauty of their splash pages.
Also let us not forget that CLAMP makes canonical queer characters and that Ashura is genderqueer/agender:
In conclusion PLEASE read XXXHolic and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles at the very least (they cross over).

My Review of Prison School
But I still find myself hating on Shingo. He literally turns on his best friend, has everyone else turn on him so that Kiyoshi is solo in everything, and won’t even give Kiyoshi the benefit of the doubt. Yes, Kiyoshi did some sneaky things in order to be with a girl he really liked and even almost screwed up their peeping mission, but Shingo went too far. I’m glad Shingo came to his senses and realized Kiyoshi is pretty damn loyal (especially all he’s done for Gakuto). It’s just after Kiyoshi was found out, Shingo turned into such a jerk that I hated seeing him for the several episodes he had his broodish behavior. SHIPPING: So there were several ships worth mentioning. *Kiyoshi x Chiyo: It was weird how they came to meet because Chiyo noticed an item on Kiyoshi’s desk that had to do with sumo. Meanwhile Kiyoshi only had it because his grandma likes sumo and he doesn’t. But it doesn’t stop him from flirting with Chiyo. And you know that saying about how men will do anything for a pretty girl? That’s pretty accurate here as Kiyoshi was desperate enough to escape from prison by disguising himself as a girl, and hang out with Chiyo at an event that bores the fuck out of him. But hey, he’s with a girl that actually acknowledges his existence, so why the fuck not?! It’s clear that Kiyoshi does care for Chiyo. As for Chiyo, she sees the good in him (despite some of the questionable things he’s been involved with). She goes as far as to stand up for him when her older sister Mari tries to expel Kiyoshi and his friends. In fact, she downright disobeys her older sister for the sake of a boy. Yep, this ship has just left port! *Shingo x Anzu: I know Anzu was only around for the sake of leading-on Shingo per Mari’s order. But the fact that she did the right thing by being truthful to Shingo before he could be expelled from school was good on her part. I know her infatuation was fake from the get-go, but that kind gesture at the end of their “date” makes me think she might come around later. And she does in the finale. But after the OVA, I’m pretty sure they’re on good footing.
*Kiyoshi x Hana ... ...I don't know what you want me to say here. Crazy Bitch Hana has been on a crusade to crush Kiyoshi personally after he accidentally was in the same area as her as she took a piss in the forest. And ever since that day, she has done everything in her power to destroy him for what he (accidentally) came upon. And all times have kinda backfired on her with her being R. Kelly'd all over, feeling an unwanted mushroom touching her, and a kiss that'll leave her stupid her for three weeks. In a strange way, yeah, I can see her being obsessed over Kiyoshi (especially after that last kiss they had). But I'm not a full supporter of them. *Mari x Meiko: I’m not even going to discuss how many fanarts involving these two I had to go through in my research. But seeing as there’s some history involving Meiko being indebted to Mari from their middle school days, it doesn’t surprise me that this ship is heavily sided on Meiko. Meiko does everything for the sake of her madam president. And if she feels as though she has failed her madam president, she will punish her own self. I can’t really tell if this requited love or not. I'm leaning on Mari just using Meiko and doesn't return the feelings. Maybe if we get another season, I’ll change my thoughts on this. *Kiyoshi x Gakuto ... Only in Shingo's imagination. NO! Fuck no! By the end of the special OVA, it seems as though all 5 boys had some girl that seemed semi-interested or fully interested in them. Kiyoshi x Chiyo is a definite big one. Shingo and Anzu might be a little rocky, but a few hints were dropped. As for the others, Andre has a few admirers, Jo got a special surprise in a random girl, and Gakuto found luck in the world’s unluckiest girl. OMG MOMENTS: So I’ll admit that what peaked my curiosity with this particular series was some of the O.M.G. moments. I saw and heared about these certain moments and I wanted to hear more. Now, the two moments that first caught me years prior was Hana peeing in the woods and Gakuto deficating in class (yes, you read right, a guy shit his pants in class). Certainly that should be the end of this disg…Not by a long shot! There were plenty of jaw-dropping, O.M.G. moments to go on! Accidental panty shots, squat-thrusts that go on longer than it really should, graphic details of a high-heel shoe in a boy’s ass-crack, a girl getting aroused by a stray hair on a boy’s nipple, nudity of just about every variety, and a girl being R. Kelly’d all over (a.k.a. golden shower). And those are just the ones I could remember from the top of my head! But seriously, I think Hana getting R. Kelly'd was the one that did me in. ANIMATION: I will say this anime can go very creative when it comes to the animation. Many scenes go completely different from the norm. The facial expressions for one are VERY detailed (especially in the suspenseful scenes). But one scene I want to mention was when Kiyoshi and Gakuto were planning their escape and the animation decides to use legos to detail the escape. That was very fun to watch. Though I’m sure when it first came out The Lego Movie was probably still a big thing and this series wanted to use lego-mation for a few scenes throughout the series. Whatever the case, I loved it. But for me, I feel like they go WAY over the top when it comes to animating Meiko. And to tell you the truth, it’s probably the creator’s fault with this too, but getting several moments where the viewer is face-to-face with her taint as she does squat thrusts. Her ass literally swallows up panties. But it doesn’t help when this teenager… (REMEMBER SHE’S A TEENAGER) ...has overly-exaggerated drawn body parts. Like dominatrixs show more than she does, it’s so insane! THE DUB CONTROVERSY: So dubs can be notorious for putting unnecessary lines into the series. It could be one line in an episode or movie, several lines throughout the series, or in special cases like Shin Chan and Ghost Stories, the entire series. And trust me, Rica Matsumoto never once insulted Vikings or Minnesota in Pokemon the First Movie. You may blame the good folks at 4Kids for that line! In a couple of their dubs in the past five years, FUNimation inserted a few dub lines in animes including Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, My Girlfriend is a Gal, and Prison School that did not go over well with anyone. And the one that seemed to set people off the most was when Shingo was asked if he was a “GamerGate creepshow”. It caused so much controversy that fans got into a fight with the writer on Twitter, angry letters were sent to FUNimation, and the line was eventually changed for DVD release. I’ll be honest, I was never aware of this particular term or the controversy that surrounded it until I heard about the mess the Prison School dub wound up in because of it. Probably because after 2010, I stayed clear from those certain topics/sites/etc. But I’ll admit that this was very out of place and things like that really shouldn’t be in that unless the dub is supposed to be out of left-field like in Shin Chan and Ghost Stories. But it isn’t! This is Prison School! This anime has enough going on without out of place lines being spouted! ENDING: It is clear that the girls of the Underground Disciplinary Committee hate these men. Especially Mari! Actually, Mari has a strong disdain for the male gender due to her father's dirty little habit of lusting over Brazilian ladies with big asses. But all of them hate the boys. Hate them so much that they would go so far as to mess with their brains and set them up for failure as long as they remain prisoners. Kiyoshi’s escape arc caused the boys to get another month to their sentence and giving them one strike. So the girls figured two more offenses were going to happen one way or another. Once they get three strikes, they are eligible for expulsion. And that’s where Operation D.T.O. comes in (Destroy Testicles Operation). The girls were devious enough to lure Shingo with a plant and have Meiko mentally destroy Andre with “punishment”. Shingo was allowed a couple of hours out of the prison, but had to be back at a certain time.
Mari sets up a plant to distract Shingo. That plant managed to seduce him during his time out of prison and while his back was turned, changed the time on his clock so he’d be late returning back to the prison. Meanwhile, Andre is the biggest masochist in this anime, quite possibly in the whole anime world. He lives for being struck by women when he’s been bad. So when Meiko held back her punishment tactics, he went crazy. So much so that when Meiko called him over, he crashed through barbed wire and the girls considered it as a prison break. That’s strike two! And even though Shingo’s plant broke down and confessed what was going on and Shingo managed to get back to campus on time. He didn’t technically make it inside the premises. So now the boys are at strike three and up for expulsion. Meiko, Hana, and Mari are some manipulative bitches! With any luck, the principal will go easy on them. On the plus side, he’s an ass-man and can understand the boy’s lust for ladies. But then it gets ugly when you realize this guy is also Mari and Chiyo’s father. While Kiyoshi was able to get favor points with the principal by giving (false) praise to the booty that would make even Space Dandy proud, the principal was only able to give the boys 24 hours left at the school before they are fully expelled. If the boys have one more plan, they better pull it off and FAST. Actually, with the help of Chiyo, Anzu, and the other boys, they were able to pull off one hell of a method to combat D.T.O. The boys distracted Meiko with an arm-wrestling match. Anzu distracted the girls by sneaking around the prison. Gakuto was able to hack into Mari’s computer to dig up dirt for the principal. Kiyoshi got the final laugh with crazy-bitch Hana by sticking his tongue so far down her throat she won’t think straight for a week. And the sprinkles on top, we got Chiyo to pose as Jo, Jo pose as Gakuto, and then have Gakuto get the final nail in the coffin to take down the Underground Disciplinary Council. With this amounting evidence, the principal felt that the boys more than enough did their time in prison school and have all earned their freedom. And yes, they can stay admitted to the school. As for Meiko, Hana, and Mari, those three have won a one-way trip to the clink. Now this didn’t turn around like having the boys become the warden and the girls become the prisoners. Actually, the REAL president of the student council stepped in as warden for this special occasion. We meet Kate Takenomiya literally in the final five minutes of the last episode (despite so much more discovered in the manga). And she wastes no time chastising, embarrassing, and breaking the girls of the underground disciplinary council in a private and even public setting. But enough about Meiko, Hana, and Mari’s backstory, we now rejoin the boys as they are enjoying their freedom. MAD WAX: This is the sequel OVA to Prison School where we see what life is like for the boys after leaving prison and watch as Meiko, Hana, and Mari are sent to prison and literally stripped of their dignity. Actually, we don’t even watch more than 2 minutes involving the three witches. Most of the episode does consist the boys interacting with the girls of the school. Kiyoshi and Chiyo are cute together. And there’s some hope for Anzu and Shingo after all that has happened between them. That just leaves Gakuto, Andre, and Jo. Andre quickly became popular with the ladies for being strong. Gakuto got lucky with the world’s unluckiest girl. Since it’s a given that Gakuto risked being an outcast through high school and quite possibly a virgin for life after he shit his pants during class. This girl understands due to a similar incident that happened when she was younger. And like I said before she’s the world’s unluckiest girl. She ends up in mishaps where we end up seeing her panties or her being half-naked for some reason. But all wasn’t good with one of the boys. Jo started to feel that he’s unable to survive in the outside world and misses being locked up. And he was willing to fondle a girl’s ass just to go back in the system. Kinda relatable to people who are locked up for a long time and they know no other life outside prison. Really sad! But Jo gets a surprise by a female classmate as she took the time to give him a baked good personally and even address him by name. This actually touched Jo and made him second-guess the whole prospect of living outside the system. And through some accidents, Andre wound up naked, bondaged, and kicked by scared, naked females. Don’t ask. It’s an OVA. OVA’s are notorious for kinky shit like this happening. Despite a lot of fanservice (not aimed at me whatsoever), I was really captivated by the story of these boys trying to survive the prison school. The animation was very inventive at times and fun to watch. I just think I could do without constant close-ups of Meiko’s taint. And while I’m on the subject of Meiko, who put bull hormones in her milk?! Not since Eiken have I seen a high school girl with overly-eggagerated proportions and clothing that doesn’t leave much to the imagination. Okay, I'm being too harsh here. But if you watch this girl, you'll understand where I'm coming from. But I enjoyed the story overall. Shock factor and all! There were so many shocking moments in the anime that might scare off some folks. I leaned in closer, jaw-dropped waiting to see if there’s another scene in this anime that’s going to top this one! My only issue was with the dub. Yes, controversial line aside, some of the voices just feel like they didn’t belong. Particularly when it comes to characters like Gakuto and Andre! But I honestly think it’s because I was never a fan of Eric Vale voicing a high school student…yes, even when he was doing that on Fruits Basket. And Andre…who told Sonny Strait it was a good idea to do Jarjarbinks through the entirety of the series? If you’re looking for a thrilling anime filled with escape plans, sweat dripping from between girl’s thighs (skeet, skeet, mother fucker), clever moments, oh my gosh moments, big ol’ jiggly bits, and moments that’ll keep you at the edge of your seat, check this one out. Just watch the dub at your own risk. And if you want more of that, the manga goes much, much, much further than what the anime tells. Currently, FUNimation and Hulu are the only ones streaming the series. The OVA, Mad Wax is not streamed on any platform. I’m also pretty confident it’s not on the home release either. So you might have to do some digging around for that one. Okay, that's done. Okay what anime on my LONG list of FUNimation licensed animes am I going to watch next? Let's fire up the random... Yes, I see you Zombieland Saga. But I really need to do the randomizer and... Yes, I realize Mamoru Miyano is in this and is at his maximum craziest. It's just that I have a long list to get through and...
OKAY, FINE! I'll watch Zombieland Saga! I'm hoping that this guy is crazier than Cilan, Rintaro Okabe, Light Yagami, and Tamaki Suoh.

Wait, I'm confused about the whole Japanese naming thing...if it's [family name] [last name] then shouldn't Yuugi's name be written as Mutou Yuugi and not Yuugi Mutou? And why do the characters call him Yuugi and not Mutou but refer to each other as Jounouchi, Honda, Kaiba, etc.? Is it ever stated anywhere that Yuugi just prefers his first name? I'm hazy with the manga as a whole so if I'm missing something obvious let me know.
Yuugi’s name is indeed written as Mutou Yuugi in Japanese name order / the Japanese manga. =) In fact, a quick run through of all the characters’ names written in Japanese name order ( [Family Name] [Given Name] ) is as follows:
Mutou Yuugi
Jounouchi Katsuya
Mazaki Anzu
Honda Hiroto
Bakura Ryou
Otogi Ryuuji
Kaiba Seto
Kaiba Mokuba
Kawai Shizuka
Kujaku Mai
Yes, that’s right—“Jounouchi” is Jounouchi’s family name, not his given name. His given name is Katsuya, though this is something that many western fans (understandably!) don’t catch.
As for how they refer to each other—how someone addresses someone else in Japanese (whether it’s by their family name, given name, with or without honorifics, et cetera) typically depends on the relationship they have with that person, as well as what that person is comfortable with. There are a lot of different nuances here, but I’ll try to keep this explanation as succinct and simple as I can! (And keep in mind, I’m also speaking of general relations in most cases. These can of course vary between individuals and relationships!)
So, first off—given names. Typically people only refer to each other by their given name if they’re very close, and by “very” close I mean family members, significant others, close friends who have that permission, et cetera. So for example, in “Cardcaptor Sakura” it’s a very big deal when Syaoran calls Sakura by her given name, and she asks him if it’s okay for her to call him “Syaoran-kun” instead of “Li-kun” in response. For her to do that without permission could be considered offensive or rude, because it would be insinuating that she is assuming a closer familiarity than what they actually have. (Of course, Syaoran gives her permission, so it’s all right for her to call him Syaoran-kun from that moment on. Everyone else, you’ll notice, still calls him Li-kun.) The level of emotional familiarity or intimacy in this case is also determined by honorifics. To use this same example, if Sakura started calling Syaoran simply “Syaoran” without the “-kun,” that would be implying another level of intimacy and closeness. When they get married, I expect she’ll drop the “-kun” and simply refer to him as “Syaoran” on the regular. But until then, it’s “Syaoran-kun,” to show that they’re very close friends (well, dating now), but also still keeping that level of … not respect, per se, but formality? Kind of? It’s a bit hard to explain, but “Syaoran-kun” is not as intimate here as “Syaoran” would be.
So to bring this back to YGO, most of the Japanese characters are referred to by their family names rather than their given names because they’re simply classmates with one another, and although most of them are close friends (Yuugi and Jounouchi have literally tried to die for one another on several occasions; you don’t get much closer than that), they either haven’t discussed switching to given names, they still don’t feel that they have the relationship upgrade to switch to given names, or both. So to use Jounouchi as an example:
Yuugi refers to him as “Jounouchi-kun” because they started out as classmates and are now best friends, but again, they either haven’t discussed + just don’t have the relationship upgrade (i.e. dating) for him to make the switch to Jounouchi’s given name. It would really stand out to others if he made the switch besides, given that no one else addresses Jounouchi as “Katsuya” (even Shizuka simply calls him “oniichan” most of the time when she’s around). Yuugi adds -kun to the end of Jounouchi’s name because he tends to have politer speech, and does this with pretty much everyone.
Anzu refers to Jounouchi as “Jounouchi” because she refers to pretty much all of her classmates by their family names (save Yuugi, but more on him in a minute). She does not add -kun to his name because the two of them did not get along at first, and as such she was a bit harsher / ruder toward him than she would be to others (e.g. I’d have to double-check, but I’m pretty sure she calls Bakura “Bakura-kun”). Leaving off the honorific like that is a bit rude / impolite, especially if it’s from a person who would generally use it, so it counts here. (Note: I’m not criticizing Anzu for this, before anyone gets defensive. She and Jounouchi held mutual dislike for each other at first. Their relationship is beautiful and I’m not saying otherwise.) As for why she never added it later, I’d say it’s simply habit for her to refer to him as “Jounouchi” alone, and it’s not like he cares, anyway.
Honda refers to Jounouchi as “Jounouchi” because he doesn’t use honorifics for anyone, period. They’ve been friends since middle school, but again, it’s common to refer to someone by family name, Honda doesn’t use honorifics anyway, and they don’t have the relationship upgrade to necessitate given name usage (which again, would cause attention). Hence, simply “Jounouchi.”
Bakura refers to Jounouchi as “Jounouchi-kun” because, like Yuugi, he uses polite speech, sees Jounouchi as a friend and classmate, et cetera.
Otogi refers to him simply as “Jounouchi.” I believe he sometimes adds -kun on to be patronizing when he’s first introduced (as honorifics can also be used mockingly; Jounouchi mockingly refers to Malik’s split personality as “Malik-chan” in this way once, and it’s beautiful), but for the most part I believe he simply leaves off honorifics as well. It’s a tough guy thing. But I did just double check his first chapter in my scans of the Japanese raws and saw him refer to Jounouchi as simply “Jounouchi,” so I think he typically leaves off honorifics as well.
When Kaiba deigns to use Jounouchi’s actual name, it’s simply “Jounouchi.” He does not like, nor respect, Jounouchi, and so it’s rare he even gets that far, but yeah. Definitely no honorifics to be seen here.
Interestingly, Hanasaki refers to Jounouchi as “Jounouchi-san,” a sign of respect, during their phone call in Death-T, when Hanasaki was keeping on eye at Sugoroku in the hospital. This puzzles me a little, but it might have something to do with Hanasaki’s timid personality, which makes him even more polite than the standard Domino High student.
And so on and so forth, you get the idea. So for most of the characters it’s [Family Name], and sometimes [Family Name]-[honorific], but generally they just refer to each other by their family name because that’s how it’s done in Japan. So it’s not at all odd that most of the characters refer to Jounouchi as such.
As far as Yuugi, that’s never directly explained. Best I can tell, the Doylist reason is probably because Takahashi wanted Yuugi’s name to be said as much as possible, given that Yuugi’s name directly translates to “game” and thus was chosen as a meaningful name. A Watsonian explanation could be a number of things:
Yuugi has known Anzu since childhood, so it’s incredibly possible that he gave her permission to call him by his given name ages ago, particularly since he has a crush on her in canon. Likewise, I could see him asking her if it’s okay if he simply calls her “Anzu,” and she probably said yes since she doesn’t seem to care when people call her by her given name. (Jounouchi and Honda do call her “Mazaki” in the first chapter, but switch to using her given name after that, even before they’re all on decidedly friendly terms with each other. This could also be their way of being rude at first (again, assumed familiarity), but if Anzu minded she would have called them on it, and she never does. Thus, we can infer that Anzu really doesn’t care if others use her given name or not, despite the cultural boundary that usually prevents that. Again, it can vary from individual to individual.)
Others could simply call Yuugi by his given name because they don’t respect him / don’t care if it upsets him or not, i.e. they’re being rude. But Yuugi, like Anzu, doesn’t seem to really care if that’s the case.
Or it could be that Yuugi gave his friends permission to use his given name off-page. That doesn’t explain the antagonists and enemies who also use it, but it’s possible.
Regardless of why others do or don’t, it’s highly probable that Yuugi, like Anzu, just doesn’t care.
On that note, the women in the series generally are addressed by their given names, though typically with honorifics. Anzu pretty much never has honorifics used for her name (I do think Sugoroku addressed her as “Anzu-chan” in the first chapter), but Mai is typically addressed as “Mai-san” rather than “Kujaku-san,” or simply “Mai” by those who don’t use honorifics (e.g. Jounouchi, Honda, et cetera). Shizuka, too, is usually called “Shizuka-chan” by the characters given that she’s younger than all of them, with the exception of Jounouchi; as her brother, he’s allowed to simply call her “Shizuka.” They have that familiarity given that they’re family.
I feel like this is something of a confusing mess of an explanation, and I’m sorry if it is! If you want anything clarified / cleared up, please feel free to ask, especially if you want to know why Character A refers to Character B a certain way, et cetera. But just as a general summation:
It’s standard to refer to classmates, friends, et cetera by their Family Name unless given permission to do otherwise.
Honorifics have different meanings (e.g. -san is more polite than -kun), and are usually polite, but can be used mockingly / to patronize as well. (Tone, context, et cetera usually determines this.)
Leaving off honorifics isn’t always impolite; really it denotes closeness, which can be rude if that closeness does not actually exist, but can also be genuine and sincere.
Like I said before, there’s a lot of nuance, but if you want further clarification just feel free to ask, and I’ll do my best to explain. ^^
#orasforlife#another example of honorific nuance: in the JP anime Shigeru (Gary) sometimes refers to Satoshi (Ash) as ''Satoshi-kun''#they ARE childhood friends - BUT he's being PATRONIZING when he does this#he's using ''-kun'' in a mocking way#this is why the dub sometimes has him call Ash ''Ashy-boy''#it's a condescending pet name#it's not affectionate - it's an insult#hence why - when he's not being a dick - he simply calls him ''Ash''#(or ''Satoshi'' by itself)#the more you know~
