You can do that when you don’t have kids

I travel. A lot. Last year I took over 30 flights, visiting 20+ cities and 3 different countries. That doesn’t include road trips.

Growing up in a small town, I knew there was more out there. Each year we took small family trips to places like Hershey Park, the Jersey Shore, and the Adirondacks. They weren’t fancy trips but the goal was to explore places we had never been.

I was hooked.

I’m not going to get into the merits of travel or the benefits it has on individuals and the world as a whole - there are plenty of blogs out there for that. For me however, travel has always been something I’ve loved doing and in turn, something I’ve made a priority in my life.

Not everyone sees it that way. People see my travels and tell me how lucky I am. Yes, I am certainly lucky. I never go a single day without realizing how fortunate I am to live the life I have. But simply travelling doesn’t make me lucky.

Yesterday at work, I was talking about how I am looking forward to spending my summer doing some travelling. The response I received – that must be nice.

You know what? It is nice!

I have chosen to create a life for myself that lets me travel. I have chosen to create a life for myself where I am responsible for me. I have also chosen to surround myself with people who can do the same. It sure is nice.

Now, to be fair, that person wasn’t trying to be a jerk. They have a family and just taking off to Australia for two weeks isn’t feasible. That however is the life they chose.

My response?

You can do that when you don’t have kids.

Pre-preparing lunches to eat at my desk is my therapy. Small, plastic containers filled with neatly-arranged greens and grains ensure that my lunch hours are not tarnished by garish flavors. Hunching over the sink as I wash the empty box is my version of the “spa experience.” It’s like a hot tub for the hands. . Manually logging into email accounts is my therapy. Typing out the many characters of my predictable password reminds me that I’m human, that I’m flawed. It keeps me centered. I am not a robot. . Unplugging my subordinates’ earphones when they leave them at their desks is my therapy. If they are deluded enough to believe that music—or God forbid, a podcast—can improve their productivity, they deserve to have their embarrassing tastes exposed to their deskmates. how many masters do you think wait until their padawan are knighted for them to finally bang? obi wan and anakin can't be the only ones!

hm tbh I don't think Anakin and Obi-wan's relationship was like this at all. A lot of ppl see Obikin as a teacher-student thing and I just don't see that - in fact I don't like it or the misaligned power dynamic there. I don't think that's the genesis of their relationship at all. Because they are very much equals.

The Master-Padawan dynamic is individual to the two ppl involved - sometimes it seems parental, other times friendship, sometimes sibling-like, other times strictly careerminded mentor-apprentice. It's a dynamic that appears to shift between whoever is involved.

I see them as coming to adulthood, after a horrifying youth of war and mishandled training (for the both of them) and seeing another grown person they can truly rely on after years of friendship and trust which, with the Force, exceeds any type of Earth-like definition of a bond/categorization.

the Council was like oops maybe we shouldn't have put the two young, inexperienced, fatherless (RIP Qui gon) boys-who-became men together to train in a totally unprecedented mentor-apprentice situation??? and then also throw them into a War when all they had to rely on was each other?

oh and oops they're also a dyad.

their mentor-apprentice bond also evolved as a direct result of the war, with the two of them being the faces of the Front. it seems it was the Force at work. they were special. a team. "The Team." their bond changed entirely as they changed entirely as people, it morphed. and in TCW it grew away from their Master-Apprentice phase into something really uncommonly permanent. true equal-footing friendship and trust.

the Force threw them into a teenaged/young adult situation which drowned the two of them (Anakin taken from home, Obi-wan barely knighted, lost, and grieving & grappling with being the most inexperienced Master in the Order), and when they came up for air as adults they saw this resilience and reliability in one another. friends. generals. brothers in arms. confidants who could share with one another their insecurities, pain, and questions they couldn't post to anyone else.

and then, eventually, more.

there were prob other "unconventional relationships" in the Order, post-apprenticeship, but I do feel like Anakin and Obi-wan, once they became full grown men capable of their own decisions and aware of their boundaries, were a special case of star-crossed.

I see it as the Force literally created them as halves, blind and grasping and empty, to eventually be stitched together through individual experience, a bond that is undefinable as it is infinite and representative of balance and the world finding its footing.

Sure, they always have "when you last saw me I was but the student and now I am the Master" underpinning to their relationship -- the start of it all, how they met, boyhood competition, and even bitterness. Vader's fixation on victory drawn from unresolved childhood anger. But it is not in the way people think: Anakin's definition of "Master" changes wildly throughout the SW continuity. From slavemaster, to Jedi Master (teacher, mentor), to All Powerful Supreme Master (Sidious), to mocking Obi-wan with the term like putting it in airquotes "Master". To respectful, afterdeath, truly realizing the extent of Obi-wan's power when he offers to teach him immortality... from one broken man to another, in sorrow, in humility, free at last from pride, pain, and slavery: "I am so, so sorry Master".

He respects Obi-wan's knowledge, the validity of his other half, the Light, and so finally becomes a Master himself.

the Force took them as two separate people and forged them together. this brought them comfort, relief, and security. it helped them win the war. it helped Obi-wan, as an old man, save Anakin Skywalker's soul.

and it saved the Galaxy.
