The first day.

Carol jolted awake to the sound of her bedroom door slamming open. She was burrowed deep under the covers, enjoying the warmth when a tiny mass suddenly hurled itself onto the bed.

"Mommy! You have to get up! It's first day!"

Carol groaned as Rindy pulled the covers off her face. It was barely 6am, according to the clock. Rindy didn't start until 9.

"Nerinda, it is far too early to be up."

"But we have to get ready. You always take foreverrr."

Carol gasped in feigned offense, grabbing Rindy and burying the two of them under the covers. Rindy giggled as Carol squeezed her tightly.

"Mommy! It's breakfast time we have to get up!!"

Carol shut her eyes tightly, moving her head away from Rindy's fingers as they tried to pry her eyelids open.

"Mommy's not here, she's sleeping, come back later," she said in a robot voice.

"Mom!" Rindy yelled, exasperated but still giggling. She wiggled her way out of the nest of blankets and jumped off the bed to turn on the lights. Carol sighed and rubbed her eyes, knowing there was no other option but to admit defeat. A part of her, though exhausted, was somewhat pleased with Rindy getting her up so early. It meant a slow morning.

"Do you want pancakes?"

"Pancakes! But that's a weekend breakfast?!" Usually they had toast or cereal. Pancakes were saved for lazy days, but Carol was feeling just as giddy. To hell with it, pancakes on the first day.  Why not?

"Shh, Rindy. Don't tell anyone," Carol winked, sending the six year old into a fit of jittery giggles, again. Carol could get used to that sound, even at 6 in the morning.

She threw on a robe and let Rindy pull her down the stairs to the kitchen. Pancakes were easy to whip up, and soon Rindy was munching away happily on the pancakes, while Carol calmly sipped a cup of coffee.

"Are you excited for school today?"

"Mhm!" Rindy said around a mouthful.

"I'm glad to hear it, dear," Carol said, smiling. "I'll be there to pick you up at three."

"Mkah," she mumbled with her mouth stuffed.

"Don't speak with your mouthful, Nerinda, alright?"

Her daughter nodded, and soon she was dressed, bouncing with excitement and flailing on Carol's bed as Carol got dressed herself, slowly. At this rate, Rindy would be out cold by the time lunch rolled around.

Carol pulled up in the parking lot of the elementary school around 8:45, and ushered Rindy out the car, holding her hand as she led her six-year old through the familiar halls of the school. She greeted Robichek with a kind wave as she passed the kindergarten classes, and made her way to Rindy's new Grade 1 classroom.

It was decked out with colourful shapes of cut out paper decorating the wall, posters of their ABCs, numbers, and a list of classroom rules at the front by the chalkboard.

Every desk had a name tag, and Rindy quickly found hers, close to the front. Her daughter settled in, legs tapping against the floor. There were only one or two other students seated already.

"Oh, Carol! How wonderful," a kind voice spoke from the doorway. There stood Mrs. Morgan, who had donned some business casual clothes rather than the usual tracksuit.

"Claire, it's nice to see you," Carol said, greeting the gym teacher with a polite hug. "Rindy's been incredibly excited to have class with you this year."

"That's wonderful to hear," the redhead beamed, smiling at Rindy who giggled in her seat. "I'm excited to teach these first graders more than just jumping jacks. It'll be a nice change."

"Harge and I've been thinking the same thing," Carol said, as more kids came into the room with parents waving hasty and tear-filled good-byes.

"Oh, and how is Mr. Aird these days?"

Beats me. "Oh, he's doing quite well. By the way, I've been meaning to check, I've signed Rindy on for an after class program this week, just for Wednesday because I can't pick her up on time, you see. We assumed it was phys ed at first, but-"

"Nope, none of those teams have been filled out yet. When we do, I'll make sure to get Rindy to sign up. But right now there's nothing for gym after school. It's probably that new art program we've got."

"Right," something in Carol's chest leaped. "Art."

After a quick goodbye, Carol headed out of the school, saying hi to a few familiar staff along the way and stopping to check in with the front desk about Rindy's registration for the program. Rindy's name was on the list, but could come and go whenever Carol or Harge wanted her to. There was no credit or reward attached to attending consistently, much to her relief. She'd rather prefer to keep Rindy with her when she could.

A flash of a brunette in green caught her eye just as the bell rang while she stood in the front foyer. A lithe figure had turned the corner into one of the smaller hallways, carrying boxes and just a little too out of sight for Carol to identify her.

The bumbling of small footsteps racing across the school to find classes made her come back to reality. She wrung her hands together and shook her head, committing herself to removing the silly fantasy of the dainty photographer as she headed out to her car.

At the request of Mrs. Robichek, Therese had arrived early to help set things up and settle in the new kids. She carried boxes, shuffled desks and got to be friendly with all the new teachers who noticed her working and said a friendly hello. Mr. Tucker avoided her ardently, and she didn't mind.

"You must be the new art teacher," A small redheaded woman came up to her, and Therese smiled. Hardly a teacher but okay.

"Sure am, Therese Belivet," she introduced herself. The handshake was firm and polite, one shake.

"I'm Claire Morgan, I teach gym to the younger tyrants around here, and Grade 1 this year," she said. Thank god, thought Therese.  She seemed a lot more approachable than Tucker did.

"Nice to meet you," Therese nodded.

"So, you think you're ready for the school year to kick you in the butt? That's how it was with me when I first started."

"Oh, sure. I'm hardly a teacher compared to you all, I just need to babysit the stragglers after school," Therese chuckled, shaking her head.

"Nonsense, Miss B. You are most definitely a part of the staff now." Mrs. Morgan leaned in closer. "Plus, I heard you have to share Tucker's classroom. You've got everyone on your side because that shit's not easy."

Therese blinked and smiled at the woman's humorous quips, Miss B. I like that.

"But anyways, welcome to the team, Therese! I'm assuming you're not sticking around during the day?"

"Oh, no, I couldn't. I'll go home for a bit and prep, and then come back near 3:00. Mr Tucker doesn't seem to like it when I'm around him, so I'll wait until the last possible second to get in."

"Good plan," and then the woman was off, ushering some older kids to get to class. Therese smiled; she could get used to this.

There were meant to be 20 kids registered for 'after-school art', but only 11 showed up on the first day. Therese clutched her clipboard as she went through attendance. The remaining 9 all had little P's in the row of their names; their parents had signed them out and picked them up at the regular times.

"Hello everyone," Therese began, feeling a surge of confidence as the classroom quieted and seemed to be attentive. She wrote Miss Belivet on the chalkboard in quick cursive and introduced herself.

"I'm Miss Belivet, but you can call me Miss B. I'll be teaching you art during this program; everyday we'll have a new activity or craft, and you can participate as much as you want to."

That seemed to land nicely. There were a few older grade students who seemed hesitant and bored to be there but had no other choice. So, Therese pulled up an empty desk to the front of the room and set one of her new supply boxes on top; revealing new sets of brushes, acrylic paints, and paper.

The kids almost immediately shot up and crowded around the box; exclaiming in awe at the brand-new professional-looking boxes and tools, which they clearly hadn't seen during all their time in elementary school, since majority of this was cheaper, discounted things that Therese had to afford.

"Ah, ah! Back to your seats," Therese scolded, shooing them away. "First some ground rules; these are important supplies, they're new. So, obviously, I'd ask all of you to be extra careful with them, not lose any pieces, and always tell me if you break one of them, okay?"

Eager faces nodded and Therese beamed, her heart fluttering with nerves and excitement.

"First day; we're going to make folders to keep all your artworks in one place. You can pick whatever paper and colour or paint the cover however you feel. But we'll also make sure to put your name on it, sound good?"

She let the older grades show the younger kids how to use scissors and glue, and as the kids settled in with their own crafts, -pencil crayons already flailing everywhere- she pulled out an old sketchbook of her own. She hadn't touched it since her college days, but seeing the children draw and paint to their delight gave her enough inspiration to start again.

Durante toda a história do cinema, há uma escassez de representatividade lésbica nos filmes. A falta de personagens lésbicas demonstra um silenciamento sob como elas vivem e se relacionam. E isso cria uma dificuldade de mulheres lésbicas e bissexuais encontrarem um produto audiovisual no qual possam se identificar. A maioria dos filmes feitos com personagens lésbicas (como por exemplo Assunto de Meninas, Azul é a cor mais quente, Aimée e Jaguar, Bloomington, As filhas do botânico, Tomates Verdes Fritos e outros) tem um final triste para elas: ou uma morre tragicamente, ou se suicida, ou encontra o “homem certo” no final, ou assume uma heterossexualidade (por pressão da família e/ou sociedade) ou enfrentam violência. Pensando que o cinema tem a capacidade de propor novas formas de representação e de questionar os papéis pré-estabelecidos, listo aqui, 10 filmes lésbicos com finais felizes.

1 – Nunca fui Santa (But I’m a cheerleader - 1999)

Megan é uma garota popular e líder de torcida em sua escola. Além disso, namora o jogador de futebol mais bonito e famoso do colégio. Seus pais conservadores começam a pensar que ela pode ser lésbica devido ao seu gosto musical, além de obras feitas por mulheres que ela tem em seu quarto e seu jeito de se relacionar com as amigas. Eles, com o apoio de seu namorado e amigas, a internam na clínica “Caminhos Verdadeiros”, dedicada a tornar homens e mulheres heterossexuais. O que deveria ser uma jornada de “cura” para Megan, na verdade se torna uma descoberta para ela sobre sua própria sexualidade e sobre amor. Este filme, cheio de duplo sentido, faz quem o assiste dar boas risadas, sem deixar de lado a reflexão sobre questões LGBTT. O final é fofo e gratificante.

2 – Índia, amor e outras delícias (Nina’s heavenly delights – 2006)

Após a morte do pai, Nina volta para sua cidade e reencontra sua família indiana, que é bastante tradicional, e descobre que o restaurante de seu pai está à venda. Ela foi embora do lugar após terminar o noivado com Sanji, homem que pertence à família do restaurante concorrente ao do seu pai e que agora deseja comprá-lo. Decidida a impedir que ele seja vendido, e a conseguir dinheiro para que ele volte a funcionar, ela se inscreve em um concurso de melhor prato e assume a cozinha com a ajuda de Lisa, por quem acaba se apaixonando. Teria ela coragem de assumir seu amor por Lisa perante a família e amigos? Amor, culinária e um final que nos mostra como ter coragem é necessário para ser feliz.

3 – Imagine eu e você (Imagine me and you – 2005)

Rachel irá se casar com Heck e, no dia do seu casamento, conhece a florista Luce. Ela sente uma forte atração/conexão com Luce, a ponto de colocar em dúvidas se está realmente apaixonada pelo marido como pensava estar. Luce, que é assumidamente lésbica e está solteira, tenta não se apaixonar por Rachel, devido ela ser casada, por ter a crença que ninguém deve atrapalhar um relacionamento que já existe. Um filme perfeito para ser exibido na Sessão da Tarde. Um filme sobre como pode existir amor à primeira vista.

4 – Falsas Aparências (Fingersmith – 2005)

Baseado no livro de Sarah Waters, a história se passa no ano de 1861, em Londres, quando a jovem órfã Sue Trinder, que mora em um bairro pobre da cidade, se junta em um plano para dar um golpe na herdeira milionária Maud Lilly, fazendo–a se casar com Richard Rivers, que planeja interná-la em um manicômio após o casamento e ficar com sua herança, dividindo-a com Sue. O plano todo foi pensado pelo Mr. Rivers, mas começa a dar errado quando Sue e Maud se apaixonam. Um filme dividido em três partes, cheio de reviravoltas, que prende sua atenção do começo ao fim.

5 – Elena Undone (Elena Undone – 2010)

Elena é casada com um pastor totalmente devoto a sua fé e seus fiéis. Peyton é uma escritora assumidamente lésbica. Ao se conhecerem em um centro de adoção (Elena sonha em ter outro filho, mas tem dificuldades para engravidar, e Peyton sonha em ser mãe), elas trocam telefone e, apesar de viverem em mundos completamente diferentes, uma amizade nasce entre as duas. A partir disto, Elena começa a discordar das pregações que seu marido, Pastor Larry, faz na igreja. Peyton, que está solteira e é tímida, passa a evitar passar tanto tempo com Elena com medo de se apaixonar. Elena não imagina mais sua vida sem a amizade de Peyton e, apesar de nunca ter cogitado beijar uma mulher, seu desejo a faz dar o primeiro passo, passando a ter um romance com Peyton. As duas mulheres se apaixonam profundamente, ambos cientes de que um futuro juntas talvez não passe de um sonho.

6 – Beije-me (Kyss Mig – 2011)

Mia está prestes a se casar com Tim e conhece Frida na festa de noivado de seus pais. Com a convivência, elas se apaixonam uma pela outra e passam a viver um intenso romance escondido da família, até serem flagradas. Mia tem medo de decepcionar o pai e o noivo, por isso, hesita em ficar com Frida – até perceber que o medo de perder um grande amor nos faz assumir quem somos e ir atrás do que queremos.

7 – San Junipero – Episódio da série “Black Mirror” (San Junipero – 2016)

Ok, não é um filme, mas é um episódio de seriado que funciona bem como uma longa metragem. A história retrata Kelly, uma mulher bissexual e Yorkie, uma mulher lésbica. Kelly já viveu toda a vida que queria e não tem medo da morte. Yorkie passou toda a vida escondendo quem ela é e o que mais deseja é viver sem as amarras do passado. O episódio derrete seu coração do começo ao fim. Com uma trilha sonora que nos ajuda na imersão da proposta, acompanhamos o relacionamento e o desfecho dessa história, que com certeza te deixará com um belo sorriso no rosto. Ponto extra, ainda, para a cena do pedido de casamento, que, com certeza, é uma das mais belas já vista em filmes lésbicos.

8 – Livrando a Cara (Saving Face – 2004)

Will é uma cirurgiã que praticamente não tem vida social e vive para o trabalho. Vivian é uma bailarina, filha do chefe de Will. As duas foram criadas em uma comunidade chinesa nos EUA. Habituada a viver sozinha em seu apartamento e ser independente, Will se vê encurralada quando sua mãe, uma tradicional chinesa que é viúva, aparece grávida em sua porta pois fora expulsa da casa dos pais por não querer assumir quem é o pai do bebê. Ela sempre insiste para que Will vá aos eventos da comunidade chinesa a fim de encontrar um bom marido e é lá que ela e Vivian se aproximam e se apaixonam. Essa comédia romântica promete ótimas risadas e te fará torcer por um final feliz para Will e Vivian o tempo todo.

9 – Carol (Carol – 2015)

Carol é um filme baseado no romance escrito por Patrícia Highsmith em 1952. A trama se passa nos anos 50, quando Carol Aird conhece Therese Belivet ao ir a uma loja de departamentos comprar um brinquedo para sua filha. A atração que surge entre elas nesse momento, é nítida. Carol está se separando de um rico empresário, que não aceita o fim do casamento e usa o fato de Carol gostar de mulher para ficar com a guarda da filha. Ela convida Therese, que, apesar de ter um namorado, se sente solitária, para uma viagem na qual o amor entre elas possa ser, enfim, vivenciado. O filme é belo em todos os aspectos e a história de amor dessas duas mulheres em pleno anos 50 te mostra que para amar também é preciso coragem.

10 – A Criada (The Handmaiden – 2016)

Baseado no livro Fingersmith de Sarah Waters, o filme se passa na Coreia do Sul no ano de 1930. Durante a ocupação japonesa, Sookee é contratada para trabalhar como criada para uma herdeira, Hideko, que leva uma vida isolada ao lado do tio autoritário. Sookee entrou em um plano para dar um golpe em Hideko, a fim de fazê-la se casar com um vigarista e depois que estivesse casada, ela e o vigarista internariam Hideko em um sanatório e ficariam com sua fortuna. Tudo corre bem com o plano até que as duas se apaixonam e Sookee pode, enfim, conhecer realmente quem é a Hideko.

Girl Mans Up by M-E Girard - storytime: about four years ago, when I was even more of a baby lesbian than i am now, i went to Gay’s The Word bookshop for the first time of many. i was thirteen, and had recently been thrust into the terrifying and overwhelming world of urban queer communities. don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of benefits to urban queer environments, but moving from a tiny village to a big city as a queer person really ages you. anyway, i was terrified. i’d expected to come across other gays, lesbians, maybe some bi people; i was completely unprepared for the myriad of other bits (i had no idea what trans meant, and didn’t want to think about the possibility that i might be it). this book saved my life. it’s about a butch lesbian who is maybe  nonbinary (it’s not labeled but she just feels very nonbinary) figuring out how to stand up for herself and what she believes in. it also deals with teen pregnancy and difficult families, which is fun.

Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley - i cried so much reading this book. it’s incredible, and so hopeful and uplifting and sweet and i love it so much. it was my first lesbian romance book (one of them might be bi? don’t remember completely). it’s set in a small american town during racial integration with a young interracial couple. my heart was in my mouth for quite a lot of it, because obviously they’re in very dangerous positions and the book deals with that. it has a happy ending too, so no worrying about stereotypical lesbian tragedy. (i specifically remember finishing this book while having a picnic in a field of bluebells and it was *chef’s kiss* very fucking queer of me if i do say so myself.)

The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (originally published under the pseudonym ‘Clare Morgan’) - this is The lesbian pulp book. when people think about lesbian pulp fiction (the genre, not the film, but god would that not be a power move), this is usually the book that springs to mind. it follows nineteen-year-old Therese Belivet as she falls in love and elopes with thirty-year-old Carol Aird. Fair warning: with a modern eye, the age-gap is creepy, but it was common at the time within the lesbian community. It’s pretty heart-wrenching, and it comes with a happy(ish) ending. (There’s a movie version called Carol, but it’s very... Directed By A Man, yknow?)

Red Azalea by Anchee Min - this is a very frank memoir of the author’s experience growing up in communist China during the Cultural Revolution as a queer woman. it has some explicit scenes but it is really interesting and thought-provoking, as well as quite funny at times.

On A Sunbeam by Tillie Walden - tillie walden said “i’m escaping to the One Place that hasn’t been CoRrUptEd by Heterosexuality.... SPACE”. it’s gays in space basically. graphic novel. beautiful art.

Spinning by Tillie Walden - graphic autobiography. figure skating and queer content. tw for sexual assault/pedophilia.

Matilda by Roald Dahl - okay so this isn’t technically but literally every het on this entire planet can pry the queer subtext and themes of Matilda from my dead gay hands.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley - again technicalities. no actual gay stuff but the Creature is my soul mate and the vibe of your parent rejecting you because you’re not what they expected/wanted? queer as hell.

Steven Universe (created by Rebecca Sugar) - if you didn’t know this had lesbians Where Have You Been. but yeah. it’s good fun.

One Day at a Time (TV) - elena’s arc is just... perfect. almost my word for word lived experience. 

Anne With an E (TV) - not a main feature but LESBIAN GAY SOLIDARITY IN THE LATE 1800s IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS. also anne and diana? lesbians next question.

Trinkets (TV) - got queer stuff. got teen girls being good friends and bonding over shoplifting. big ‘be gay do crime’ vibes.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (Film) - okay so it’s not wlw but literally every single queer person on earth needs to watch this movie at some point. just. do yourself a favour. trigger warnings for: every single homophobic slur under the sun pretty much, attempted sexual assault, homophobia, physical assault.

Pride (2014 Film) - Steph is the lesbian icon of the 20th century. This Movie Was My Actual Real Life Gay Awakening. literally took one look at steph and i was like ‘das me’.

Imagine Me and You (2005 Film) - v sweet. cheating (kinda) unfortunately but pretty iconic part of lesbian film history.

MUSIC:

Dodie Clark - bi. nice music. pop i guess.

Pussy Riot - the punkest punks to ever punk. literally. it’s a movement as well but most of them are queer i think and all women so that’s fun.
