Captain N: The Game Master (A better brand ambassador than Nintendo cereal)

One cannot understate the popularity of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the late 80s. Unlike the previous “king” (the Atari 2600; yes, the 5200 was released 3 years before the NES, but it didn’t have the traction the 2600 did), the processor was powerful enough to play games that looked exactly like they do in the arcades.

And what games they were! Aside from the arcade ports, the NES had games that would be the start of several franchises that are still releasing new games to this day!

In fact, the NES was so popular they had their own fan magazine (Nintendo Power) that had an advice column headed by an entity known only as “Captain Nintendo (later “Captain N”)

Eventually Captain N got a comic within the magazine, which the led to Nintendo contracting DIC Animation to make a television series.

And what a series it was! In addition to the main cast (more on them in a bit), nearly EVERY franchise on the NES made an appearance at one point or another, except one…

The show’s premise is that a teen named Kevin is summoned via his NES, along with his dog Duke, to a realm known as Video Land.

Kevin is rechristened “Captain N” (good thing he already had a letterman jacket with an N on it) and is the Chosen One, destined to save the realm. Assisting Captain N in his quest are…

Princess Lana, the de facto ruler of Video Land after her father’s disappearance

Simon Belmont (the main character from the original Castlevania), who is a pompous ass, has a massive crush on Lana, and believes he’s the Hero of the Story. He’s mainly used for comic relief, but mainly through his interactions with the other heroes (he’s obviously not incompetent; Nintendo’s trying to sell his video game after all!)

Kid Icarus (from the video game of the same name), who is a crack archer and can obviously fly, though he has issues with his height; he’s the shortest of the heroes besides…

…Mega Man (from the game of the same name), who has a variety of devices and attachments.

But what’s a hero without villains, and have they got the who’s who for a mastermind…

Mother Brain from Metroid (for some reason, the show doesn’t have the game’s hero Samas Aran) Unfortunately, she has a “Who’s that?!” for henchmen.

The Eggplant Wizard (from Kid Icarus) and King Hippo (from Mike Tyson’s Punch Out), who are the incompetent comic relief on the villain side.

Fortunately, she does have some competence in the form of Dr. Wily (from Mega Man) Unfortunately, he doesn’t show up that often.

The plots are run-of-the-mill. Mother Brain comes up with a plan to take over Video Land (or ay least one of the realms within) and it’s up to Captain N and his allies to stop her (usually aided inadvertently by Hippo and Eggplant’s bumbling) And somewhere along the way, Simon awkwardly tries to hook up with Lana despite the fact that she’s clearly not interested.

Hello everyone! ♡ I’m really excited to be here! Under the read more, I’ll have Peter’s story, and honestly, it’s pretty much the same as his comic book / movie story. I have also added ADAM BENNETT’S story as it’s who he is living as right now. ♡

PETER PARKER / SPIDER-MAN crossed over into the human world as a TWENTY-ONE year old TOM HOLLAND lookalike and now works as a MOVIE ROYALE CUSTOMER ASSISTANT with NONE of HIS memory. i can tell they are from MARVEL COMICS due to their KINDNESS and kind of STUBBORN ways; i guess that’s why they remind me of CONVERSE, PLAID SHIRTS and BROKEN PHONE SCREEN.

Peter Parker, an orphan, grew up living with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, in New York. He was a bookish, bespectacled high school student, isolated and unpopular. He was a young boy when his parents died in a plane crash. Ben and Mary Parker were a couple who had no children of their own, and raised Peter as if he was their own son. Ben and Mary didn’t really talk about his real parents, which resulted in him thinking that his parents had left him because of something he had done. Constantly being afraid of being abandoned again, Peter worked hard every day to win his uncle’s approval. Ben and Mary adored their nephew and would have done anything to please him. 

While attending science exhibit, Peter was bitten by a spider that had accidentally received a dose of radioactivity. As a result, Peter acquires the agility and proportionate strength of an arachnid. He sewed his own uniform, and used his scientific knowledge to build mechanical devices that eject sticky webbing.

Peter always thought of his Uncle Ben as his best friend. He used to have an extensive collection of old comic books and science fiction magazines hat he enjoyed sharing with his nephew. He spent hours reading these comics and their stories about outrageous heroes and their intriguing adventures. He used to dream about being a costumed adventurer like Captain America, striking terror in the hearts of criminals.

Peter was an honor student, and his teachers had always thought very highly of him. he always came prepared for class and completed all of his assignments. The girls thought he was too quiet, and the boys considered him a wimp. He was quite shy and also had trouble making friends, but that doesn’t mean he never stopped trying. His best friend, through his school, and later on, was Ned. Peter lost his uncle when he was still in high school. He was murdered while walking home, by a common street criminal. 

His aunt insisted that Peter wear glasses, but one day, his eye-sight was better. Flash Thompson broke Peter’s last pair of glasses during a shoving match, and he never really got around to buying a new pair. He used to have quite average strength for a boy of his age. Clumsy and uncoordinated, he also had no athletic ability. He had a fear of heights – even getting a book from the top shelf in the library resulted in him suffering severe symptoms of vertigo. Peter graduated from Midtown High with the highest scholastic average in the school’s history, but he almost missed the ceremony as his car wouldn’t work. He got there just in time and he found out that he had won a full scholarship to Empire State University. May told Peter about how proud his uncle would be of him.

NOW

Peter was a lot more self confident in college than he had been in high school, even though he was struggling with the loss of his father. He left the safety of his home, and moved into a bachelor pad and even got himself a motorcycle. He got lost in his science studies and he was determined to make his Aunt May proud. After a couple of difficult months, Peter decided he needed to take some time off. He withdrew from college, and is now currently working at Movie Royale as a customer assistant. 

ADAM BENNETT

Adam lost his parents too ( in a car accident, not a plane crash ), but at a much later age than Peter ( when he turned 19 ) – which is something the two of them have in common; being orphans. He worked at the MOVIE ROYALE before Peter took control of his body and life, and that is why Peter works there now. He was single, not in a relationship and he didn’t have anyone special in his life when it happened as he kept mostly to himself. He struggled with the loss of his parents a lot, but has a good relationship with his aunt and uncle, who he visits often. He also had a dog, golden retriever, named Charlie.

Peter doesn’t remember anything from his old life, and is convinced that what Adam went through, is what he went through. So, he doesn’t remember anything about being Spider-Man, the loss of his parents at a young age nor does he remember living with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. He doesn’t remember Uncle Ben being murdered by a street criminal, or that the guy who did it was never caught. He doesn’t remember Mary Jane, or his best friend Ned. He doesn’t remember going to Midtown or getting a full scholarship to Empire State University.

KORIAND’R (STARFIRE) crossed over into the human world as a TWENTY-ONE year old PARK CHAEYOUNG (ROSE) lookalike and now works as a BARISTA AT THE CUP O’ JOE COFFEE SHOP with ALL of HER memory. i can tell they are from TEEN TITANS/DC COMICS due to their VEHEMENT and kind of IDEALISTIC ways; i guess that’s why they remind me of A SOFT KISS ON THE CHEEK, KITTENS MEOWING, and THE SUN AGAINST YOUR SKIN. im going to try to make this very brief just for those who have no clue who kori is but i will make a longer version soon enough :) i'm very interested in injustice!kori as of the moment but the way i play her will likely have mixtures of each universe (just mostly teen titans and injustice 2) 

she’s an alien princess, born to the queen and king of tamaran. tamaraneans can fly. her elder sister was very bitter because kori had everything, physically and socially, that she did not. kori was regarded highly. her sister eventually turned against their native planet and with her new organization, she took kori as a prisoner in exchange for peace on tamaran. 

there, kori was tortured mercilessly. 6 years later, she and her sister were taken captive by a group of mad scientists. they were experienced and gained their abilities, known as starbolts. the two eventually escaped, and kori landed on earth via a stolen vessel. very shortly afterwards she met the teen titans. she soon joined their team and became very close with each of them. they all fought alongside one another, kicking ass and taking names.  

she’s very moralistic as in she’s very strict on not killing others, even criminals. she just wants the best for everyone. she’s characterized by her very benevolent but naive nature. she doesn’t prefer to, but she can be brutal during combat. she feels emotions very intensely and that can often have an effect on her abilities (not anymore rIp)

she woke up in the body of lily min, a full-time student and barista, with all of her memories. lily is a very serious and studious person, so it’ll be a change for her friends and family to see her suddenly so exuberant. kori feels confused and vulnerable in lily’s petite frame, not having any abilities or combat skills. her sole focus is finding the people she trusts, but she’ll do lily’s schoolwork and work her shifts so as to not mess anything up in the girl’s life. once everything is back to normal, kori and lily will be at peace.

i’m always willing to plot! i’m really excited to see how kori’s interactions with everyone from different universes will go. i’m eager for her to see some old friends and enemies, as well as make some new ones!!

RAPUNZEL CORONA crossed over into the human world as an EIGHTEEN year old HALSTON SAGE lookalike and now works as a BAKER with ALL of HER memory. i can tell they are from DISNEY'S TANGLED due to their COMPASSION and kind of GUILLABLE ways; i guess that’s why they remind me of PAINT SPLATTERED CLOTHES, THE SMELL OF FRESHLY BAKED TREATS and UNTAMABLE BLONDE LOCKS.

quick warning, i can’t write intro’s to save my life ... like at all .. this is gonna be rambles r us 

okay so !! punzie remembers EVERYTHING, and i’m going to be setting her after the tangled movie and a little bit into the tv series before ever after. so she was just settling into her life as the official princess of corona, getting used to having her family around and also --- getting back those excessively long locks. 

jumping forward to arriving in new orleans, punzie has taken the body of a eighteen year old ( much like herself ) who is a baker, but i’m also going to say she does painting classes on a saturday morning for budding young artists in a community centre. 

overall, i’m keeping punzie very true to her original self. while rapunzel is friendly, energetic and overall charismatic, she’s also feeling extremely lonely without her family, pascal, max and eugene. it felt as though she’d only been reunited with her long lost parents and found happiness only to be ripped away from it all.

although, being the ray of sunshine she is she’s going to try not to show that too much. 

truthfully, she’s not living entirely peacefully in her new given situation, eager to get back to her home and her old life --- to her family and friends. plus, she’d barely had experience in the real world back in her universe, never mind being faced with REALITY.

so, i’m basically going to play rapunzel going about her new day to day life as though she’s totally accepting of it, and she’s still going to seem quite cheery and upbeat. albeit when she’s on her own is when she’ll truly show her emotions, over time the loneliness of missing her loved ones will truly begin to settle in and bring a damper to her spirit. 

but yeah, pls pls pls give me punzie interactions bc she is the purest bean to exist. and also she’s a literal princess like .. give her love.

ASTRID HOFFERSON crossed over into the human world as a TWENTY-ONE year old VIRGINIA GARDNER lookalike and now works as a SELF-DEFENCE INSTRUCTOR with LITTLE of HER memory. i can tell they are from HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON due to their DUTIFUL and kind of COMPETITIVE ways; i guess that’s why they remind me of MESSY BRAIDS, BRUISED KNUCKLES and SPORTS BRAS BENEATH PLAID SHIRTS.

ANYWAY, onto Scarlet-

Ever since she could remember, Scarlet was afraid of everything and anything. From butterflies, to going to school for the first time - it was all so stressful and difficult for her to adapt. While everyone has a long list of ex lovers, this girl’s got a long list of phobias that kept her in the safety of her own home.

For as equally as long as Scooby can remember, she loved food. Not any kind of food (yes, any kind of food (I lied)), but bar food. In short: Take her to half apps, and she will love you almost as much as she loves her boneless chicken wings and burgers, K? K.

When she was 7, she was at her grandparents’ house. Her cousin kept her locked out of the play room because at the time, it was ‘boys only.’ Due to this, she was stuck by herself in the hallway until her grandparents’ door slowly creaked open. Her curiosity lead her inside, and when she found the room to be freezing and her grandfather to be asleep in the bed, she was cautious upon getting closer. Shocked, she had to press her ear to his chest in order to be sure, and it only made the hairs all over her body stand on-end when indeed she heard a heartbeat. When Scooby told her mom and grandmother about her experience, they were quick to deny any truth of it. But, she knew what she experienced and no one was going to tell her she was wrong.

Her friends at school started calling her ‘Spoopy’ due to the story and her fascination with the supernatural following the event. It was thanks to one classmate that heard the nickname wrong, that she was coined as Scooby. Though, the nickname stuck and is still used to this day. For some reason, she’s always felt a resonating connection with the nickname Scooby, and prefers to be called Scooby.

Her mother, Margaret Dubois was a stay at home mother who used to be a part of the child study team within the school system. Though, she retired when she couldn’t save a child from their own mind. Scar’s father, Stewart Dubois, is a well-known mystery novelist who she always felt passed down her love for puzzle-solving gene, along with her undying curiosity. The only difference between the two was that he was so brave, and she was so timid - there was always a blockade between them cause of this. It only worsened with her silly ramblings of ghosts that her father was quick to have her suppress.

Scooby was 13 when her mother’s guilt cut her life short, and that’s the true foundation of what drove her to actually reach out and start building a bond with her father. Instead of being able to mourn the death of her mother, her father pushed her to fake-it-’til-you-make-it, telling her in order to become stronger - braver - you must falsify the feeling and then the genuine mood will follow. Her father started to get her involved with his work more, bouncing off ideas and also utilizing her as a mental sparring partner in the sense of strategy games like chess. This is the point in her life where she truly felt a pull towards solving puzzles. 

Scooby started to gravitate more and more towards mysteries and crime solving, thanks to her father. She found herself dropping in on his Law & Order marathons, and became unable to put down a mystery novel once she picked it up. But, the memory of seeing her grandfather’s ghost was always at the back of her head. It engulfed her mind, soon plaguing her dreams. Her curiosity soon got the best of her and she started to hoard cryptozoology books and anything she could regarding the paranormal. She was at crossroads; Her mind pulling her towards the crime-solving route, but her heart yearned for uncovering the unknown. Her father believed she was just majoring in criminal justice, when really she was dual-degreeing and also majoring in cryptic/occult studies.

She was 18 when she found out her parents weren’t really her parents. Just when she thought her fake bravery was becoming real; all the nights out trespassing in abandoned buildings, finally gathering up the courage to say ‘hi’ first to someone in the hallway. All of that came crashing down when, during her biology lab, she found that her blood type did not match either of her parents’. This made Scarlet’s progress nonexistent, causing her nervousness to be so extravagant that she had a problem speaking. 

Deciding to drop out of uni due to her anxiety getting the better of her, she started to see a therapist who helped her a great deal. They pin-pointed her problem to be PTSD that was stemmed from an unknown trauma from her birth parents before she was adopted at the mere age of 2. Everything was suppressed, and she felt that there was a good reason for that - not wanting to find out the details or dwell. “You can choose love, or you can choose fear.” A line her therapist told her on the daily, causing her to authentically start swallowing her pride and living her life. She didn’t want to go around turning the lights off in the world - she wanted to radiate light. 

She isn’t returning to uni for the time being, trying to catch up on a whole 21year’s worth of experience she missed out on. She’s become a paradox in a sense, claiming she’s fearless when she’s not. Loving horror movies, when they petrify her. Traveling, though she doesn’t feel safe until she’s in her own bed. Being a paranormal investigator and hellbent on proving her experience to be authentic, when the mere thought of running into a spirit has her wanting to scream. Crying during romance films, even though she doesn’t believe a word of it. Acts like she has her whole life figured out, but has no clue what she’s going to do the next day. She’s starting to place the pieces together: Courage isn’t the absence of fear, but acting despite those fears. 

Scoobs is basically a light-hearted goof. She loves conspiracy theories, and intelligent conversations at mere hours of the morning. She acts impulsively in order to keep her anxiety at bay. She leaves pieces of herself in everyone she meets and everywhere she goes; though no one is aware of her past because she’s rather mum on the subject. She does have trust issues because of her parents hiding the fact she was adopted, and it’s why she doesn’t really let anyone in. That, and she doesn’t want people to think she’s a liar or is looking for attention. She’s very comical and a great friend to have around if you’re having a bad day. But, don’t be surprised if you don’t hear from her everyday- she’s so touch-and-go. One minute she’s hitting you up to get milkshakes at 12 am, then you don’t hear from her for weeks. She’s emotional, being a Cancer in her own right.

A couple plot ideas I have:

The “You know, being your friend is going to kill me one day,” friendship

A hardcore crush who she can’t even talk to. She becomes a stuttering and stumbling mess and becomes super quiet and red around them. She’s bisexual and biromantic so I mean, hit me with anyone?

An adventure buddy who joins her at diners when it’s like 2 AM. Lit their pastime is just finding the best food in town. They just get one another and joke around - ya feel?

SOME PARANORMAL INVESTIGATING PEEPS. Ghost Busters 3.0, anyone?

Maybe someone who can’t stand Scoobster? Maybe Scooby rubs them the wrong way, or maybe there’s jealousy of some sort? 

Someone that could’ve been very important to her, but she blew it due to her cowardice trait? Like, she never spoke up when she should have, she never put in enough effort, ect.

Hello! ♡ I’m back with a second character, who I’m also quite excited about. He’s one of Peter Pan’s lost boys, not one of those mentioned in the movies, though, but more of a character who has been in the background - sort of. Anyway, his story is under the read more, like before. Oliver is quite a guy, let me tell ya haha! 

OLIVER TOBIAS REYNOLDS crossed over into the human world as a TWENTY-ONE year old BRAD SIMPSON lookalike and now works as a BARTENDER at YE OLDE KING’S INN with LITTLE of HIS memory. i can tell they are from PETER PAN due to their ADVENTUROUS and kind of IMPULSIVE ways; i guess that’s why they remind me of PIANO KEYS, SILVER NECKLACE and RIPPED SKINNY JEANS.

THE LOST BOY LIFE:

Oliver met Peter when he was eight years old. Peter knocked on the boy’s bedroom window, and it was perfect timing too. Oliver’s parents were fighting downstairs, and not being quiet about it either. They were screaming harsh words at each other and things were being thrown around the room downstairs; glass breaking into what sounded like a million pieces. Peter promised Oliver that he could take him to a place where he would never have to deal with that ever again; a place that had mermaids, pirates and other boys like him. Boys who didn’t want to grow up. 

It didn’t take a lot to convince Oliver, who closed his brown eyes and thought about the happiest thing that he could think of. It didn’t take long, until the tiny body was floating above the floor and he was out the window, following Peter as he flew towards Big Ben. When Oliver got to Neverland, Peter introduced him to the other boys and they took him in with open arms. It was a loving environment, something he hadn’t really experienced in a long time. The lost boys were up to a lot of mischief around town and they followed Peter around; helping him out whenever he would terrorize Captain Hook or when he would tease Tiger Lily. For the first time, in a long time, Oliver was happy. 

One day, Oliver was playing hide and seek with some of the boys, when Captain Hook suddenly appeared and grabbed a bunch of the boys, bringing them back to his ship. It wasn’t a lot the boys left behind could do, other than go and tell Peter about it. Oliver was one of the boys who got caught, and as he sat in the cage, he overheard some of the men working on the ship, about how they were going to bring the boys back. They wouldn’t be able to be the lost boys anymore. Oliver was terrified that this meant that he would be brought back home to his parents and the toxic environment that Peter had saved him from. That was when everything changed and flipped upside down.

NOW: 

Oliver is twenty-one years old, and working as a bartender at Ye Olde King’s Inn as well as studying in University full-time. Oliver remembers very little about his past and about his childhood, though he does walk around with a feeling that there is something very important that he shouldn’t have forgotten about. Even someone. He has flashbacks, or at least that’s what they feel like they are. To begin with, he was certain that they were just nightmares, but he’s starting to question everything because they feel real. 

ANDREW WALKER

Andrew and Oliver both shared a love of being adventurous, going on hikes and just grabbing his bag and leaving the safety of New Orleans behind for a couple of days. He would often take a couple of days off work, and go for a hike, without letting anyone really know, except for a couple of photos on Instagram here and there. He was a playful and flirty type of person, who loved to make people laugh.

Andrew was adopted when he was around eight years old, and he moved from London to New Orleans with his foster parents; who was Logan and Eleanor Reynolds; a couple who had struggled to get pregnant for years and in the end found out that adoption was their only chance if they wanted to have a baby. The only thing he knows about his real parents, is that their relationship was toxic and abusive, and that Oliver got taken out of there by the police and put into the foster system, because they both struggled with drugs and alcohol. It was a closed adoption, which meant that his parents wouldn’t be able to track him down and Andrew never found out who his real parents were.

Spiral Zone (where to begin with this train wreck...)

First, a bit of background on my process...

When I get an idea (whether via my brain saying “What about XX” or someone giving me a request) I first see if there are episodes online anywhere (this is why my review of Airwolf will likely never happen) and then I rack my brain for anything I can remember to see if it might be an interesting review (which is why my review of Happy Days will likely never happen)

After that, whether a series, film, or episode review, I try to get a refresher on what the item in question is about. In the case of a series, I try to watch the “origin” episode that (presumably) explains everything the viewer will need to know going forward.

...which brings us to Spiral Zone, another series created by Tonka for a toy line they acquired the rights to from Japan (GoBots was also originally Japanese) However, in this case they learned their lesson and went with a much more sinister premise and better animation quality

Unfortunately, this was the “second wave” of marketing cartoons that included Bionic Six, Visionaries, and C.O.P.S. and fared about as well. Of course, the fact that about as bleak a premise as The Walking Dead probably didn’t endear it to little kids...

It also didn’t help that the first episode was not an “origin” episode. In fact, they never explained how the Zone (as it’s known) came into existence until the first two minutes of episode 54! (the series ran 65 episodes) I consulted Wikipedia for the full story, but I didn’t want to simply regurgitate, so I sat on this for a couple of weeks, debating if I had enough to do an effective review. Finally, I said screw it and here we are. I will do my best to explain this hot mess without sounding like a textbook

Spiral Zone takes place is the future time of...2007. As you all know from history class, a terrorist known as Overlord dropped devices that emitted a gas that sapped the will of anyone within it, making them mindless zombies under Overlord’s control (a condition known as “being Zoned”). No one could enter to destroy the devices, as anyone who entered was affected (however, anyone who left would quickly recover). Most major cities were hit, including most of the world’s capitols. Fortunately, the craft dropping the devices was shot down, but about half of the world fell under the sway of the Zone. For whatever reason, the devices were dropped in a spiral pattern (hence the name of the show) and even floated on the ocean.

OK, how many plot holes are you seeing already? I mean, a submarine could destroy a Zone generator from a safe distance, as could air strikes and missiles (though that would likely cause a great deal of lives lost and property damage) Plus, why didn’t Overlord simply fly more craft to drop more generators? (yeah, the military would likely see him coming, but still...)

Helping Overlord in his quest for world zombification is a...biker gang?...known as the Black Widows. They, like Overlord, have a device implanted that has been dubbed the “Widow Maker” (I know...real imaginative, but what do you want from a zombie master?) that allows them to maintain free will inside the Zone and command the Zonebies

Fighting Overlord’s quest to rule the world was an elite force known as the Zone Riders, led by the imaginatively named Dirk Courage. The Zone Riders wore suits made from a special substance that negated the effects of the Zone. Unfortunately the substance was difficult to create (which is why there were only 7 suits total)

You will note that I haven’t mentioned the names of anyone else on either side. This is because they were so generic they aren’t worth wasting any more effort than it took to write this paragraph.

In the 65 episode run of its first season, it did little to make kids want to rush out and buy the toys, so the series was cancelled. I imagine the Zone Riders eventually won since 13 years later none of us are Zonebies...right?
