So, this is my first ever fic and was meant to become a Lalo centred tale. It turned into something else once I got writing though. I wrote this mainly for myself since the last episode of #BetterCallSaul (S6E6 Axe and Grind), but this is for anyone who happens to have a crush on Casper. Here’s to fics for good men over violent sociopaths (however charming they are :D ). Enjoy
It was a humid summer night in the outskirts of Frankfurt, and she couldn’t wait to close up and go home to have a cold shower. The fan was on and the air conditioner too, but that doesn’t mean much in Germany where effective ACs are considered a crime against the planet. Even though she somewhat agreed with this, Cat couldn’t help but long for one right now. It was half one in the morning, and she just wanted to start cleaning before a group of drunken students came in looking for a nightcap. The regulars, all men, were still sipping at their Pils and Weinschorles, making conversation with the owner about the state of the nation and smoking like chimneys. Cat sighed whilst preparing the pernods the students had ordered, hoping they wouldn’t stay too long. She wanted to go running tomorrow but always found it hard to do after a long night. Granted, the occasional glasses of white wine didn’t help her in that regard, but after 10 pm a drink made the evening flow faster.  Margie wasn’t home, she spent more time away for work at the moment. Cat didn’t blame her. The death of Werner, her beloved husband, had come as a shock, and the lack of support she had gotten was unparalleled. Werner had always talked so enthusiastically about his work and his “Jungs” – Some of them came around for dinner from time to time. She enjoyed their company, especially Casper’s. He was quite a lot older than her, well-built and very handsome. Cat had stolen many glances at him on numerous occasions, but having been only sixteen when they met, he kept his distance, at least romantically, but he must have known she liked him and was flattered. He was kind, and with time even taught her a thing or two about woodwork, a passion of his. Before he left with Werner and the boys, he had given her a book on hut-building. It was a fancy that they shared, to live off the beaten track and make a home there. “Maybe, when I’m back I can show you a thing or two…” he said. Cat was head over heels for him at that point. She blushed, thanking him, and their hands touched as he handed her the book, and he bent down hesitantly and gave her a hug which she returned warmly. “I’ll miss you,” she said, slightly stumbling over her words “Bis bald, Katze” he smiled. “Time will pass faster than you think”. Oh, Casper…She hadn’t seen him in almost two years now. His absence at the funeral had hit hardest of all the boys. Neither Margie nor Cat knew the reason behind it. This whole project in the States had been very hush-hush from the jump, Cat had assumed it was top-secret and government-related, but Margie claimed not to know any more than Werner had told them both. The project was taking forever and Margie was getting lonely, but Werner more so. Their telephone calls, though infrequent, left her increasingly longing for him to return. When Margie, rather suddenly, announced that instead, she would be visiting him in New Mexico, Cat was thrilled for her, and slightly envious because she desperately missed Casper. They had little to no communication, only two calls together with Werner and Margie on speakerphone, the last one being a month ago.                               Margie trusted her to take care of the house and Bärchen for a couple of days. Just after her plane had landed, Cat received a call from a very angry and distraught Margie. She had had a fight with Werner, something had happened at the building site, and who would no longer be able to join her in Jemez. Cat prepared some tea and scones for her return (you can take the girl out of England, but not England out of the girl). At first, Margie said little, she seemed very upset, worried even, but Cat couldn’t quite put her finger on it. Things had settled down about a week later when the news came. Some men came to the house, lawyers apparently, on official business. Cat wasn’t included in the conversation, but she immediately knew Werner was dead. Margie told her the details later, but those were few. The fact that Werner would never step back through the front door again was agonizing. He had become like a step-father to her in the few years they had taken her in. The next few days and weeks were blurry. The police came and went, along with even more lawyers. Cat tried to be there for Margie, but she became quite distant for some time. The boys not showing up for Werner’s memorial service was the cherry on the cake. Cat thought the whole thing was very off, but her anger at them not paying their respects weighed harder. A present instead of a visit. It having been sent by Casper was no consolation, on the contrary, it made both of them furious despite their grief. Cat felt a sharp pain in her heart every time she thought of him. Part of her longed for him to put his strong, muscular arms around her and make her his...the other part of her wanted to smack him. She had sent him letters, but they remained unanswered. Eventually, she found out he had moved, as did many of the others. No note, no letter…sometimes she wept thinking of him. Life, however, went on. Cat let out some of her anger and frustration through running and Rammstein. Their new album became the soundtrack to her life, excellent music to vent.  She had started working at the pub shortly before Werner left, and was still figuring out what she wanted to do with her life. Part of her always hoped that something would just fall into her lap. Having grown up bilingually with English and German was a gift, and she had picked up Spanish after spending some time in Spain in her early teen with her former foster family. She wasn’t good at making life-changing decisions and cherished her safe haven that was Werner and Margie’s home. Margie helped her enrol in university. A teaching degree. Although she enjoyed some of it, Cat couldn’t help but notice she wasn’t quite made for a life on the straight and narrow, and she often struggled with her finishing her papers in time. Upon Werner’s death, she took a break from her studies…she couldn’t really focus anyway.         Suddenly, she heard her name. She awoke from her thoughts and saw that her boss was pointing out that the students were ready to pay. Phew. Not too long now. The regulars left shortly after, along with the owner. After a hasty clean-down and another glass of white wine, she left on her bike, smoking a cigarette on the way whilst listening to Reise, Reise. After riding through the darkness of the mostly empty streets, she finally turned into the street where she lived. Cat got off her bike and walked the last couple of yards so as to finish the song. Then she took off her headphones and pushed her bike through the gate, not without getting her fingers slightly stuck. She swore whilst locking her bike, cursing her clumsiness. The silence of the night and the absence of music finally settled in. Against her better judgment, she sat down on the patio for one last beer she had nicked from work and started rolling a cigarette. The wind rustled the trees and you could hear an owl nearby. Suddenly, she sensed something was off. Someone was watching her. She got up and approached the end of the garden warily. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up. Who was there? An evil foreboding washed over her as she saw a large man emerge from the shadows. Her heart was racing, she looked around desperately for a means to defend herself, she wouldn’t be able to reach the gate on time if she ran. “Cat…”. That was when she saw him, his face caught the light of a nearby streetlamp. She froze. It was Casper. He looked tired, gaunt even, and a little dishevelled. There was a deep sadness in his eyes that said more than words ever could. For a few seconds they just stared at each other but then Cat ran towards him, flung her arms around him and wept. At first, Casper hesitated, but then he returned her embrace, cupping the back of her head in his large hand, gently pressing her towards his chest, the other around her waist. He choked a little. “…I’m sorry.” He couldn’t say any more, but stroked her hair and kissed her on her temple, whilst tears began to roll down her face. All the anger, disbelief and pain that had been pent up inside her came pouring out…the anger subsided swiftly as she closed her eyes, she felt his heavy heartbeat, whilst she held on to him as if she was clinging on to bare life. At last, she looked up at him questioningly and opened her mouth to ask him what had been troubling her for so many months, but before she could say anything, he motioned for her to stay silent. “Shh.” He said. “Not here. I’ll explain everything, but you must come with me.” “Come with you where?” she whispered. “What about Bärchen? Margie would never forgive me if I left him alone.” “Don’t worry, I’ve taken care of that. He’s with Fritz and Barbara. They think you’re visiting friends. We’ll talk to Margie soon via telephone…I…I’m sorry, I just couldn’t face her…not yet.” he said ashamedly…I wanted to see you”. They gazed into each other’s eyes…so much had happened since they last saw each other, but her feelings for him hadn’t subsided one iota. Pondering her next words, she looked back at the house. “Can I grab some clothes? You know, some essentials?” She’d be lost without her glasses and contact lenses. Casper nodded and followed her inside. He seemed a little jumpy, paranoid even. He waited upstairs while she packed her things. With everything ready, she looked for him and found him standing in Werner’s office. Casper was at his desk, holding something in his hands. It was Werner’s old slide rule that had been sent as a memento. “In Liebe, Deine Jungs” it read. Cat looked up at Casper, so many questions burning on her tongue. “Was this you?” She asked hesitantly. He nodded, closing his eyes and bent his head, his shoulders were drooped. Casper looked broken inside. She leaned into him in an attempt to comfort him. He sighed and put the memento back on the shelf. “Casper…why…why did none of you make it here…for the funeral?”. A shadow came over his face, and his eyes narrowed. “Actually,” he began “we weren’t even back in time to come. And even if we had, they wouldn’t have wanted us showing up there anyway.” Cat looked confused, “Who are ‘they’?” Casper snapped out of his thoughts and said “later”. He stroked her cheek, then took her hand motioning for her to follow him. They left the property quietly, avoiding the light of the street lamps. His car was a few blocks away, an old Toyota van… “rice rockets” Werner used to call them. He opened the passenger seat door, and gently pushed her inside before getting in himself, putting the key in the ignition and driving off. “Can you tell me now where we are headed?” Cat asked shyly, looking up at him as he sped through the night towards the motorway. Casper cleared his throat… “First stop, Black Forest…near Villingen, you know it?” he asked, glancing at her. “But that’s hundreds of miles- “Cat started. “I know, I’m sorry, I’ll explain everything in time.” He interrupted, taking her left hand and squeezing it reassuringly. They sat in silence for a while. Cat studied him. In the dimly lit car, she could now see how tired he truly looked. His old cheerfulness seemed replaced by worry, he had bags under his eyes and his entire body was tense. “I…I missed you” she stammered. He looked at her with his beautiful deep brown eyes, which were full of worry, but also tenderness. “And I you”. Her heart was still thumping heavily, but she began to sense the alcohol she had that night, making her slightly light-headed. She laid back in her seat and watched the cars they were passing by. Casper was not wasting any time. They were now on the motorway heading towards Villingen and going at about 150 km/h. She closed her eyes, still not quite believing what had just happened. Damn, she hadn’t brought a thing with her and she had no idea how long she would be away.

Ok if we can't get Lalo's best moments ranked, how about his smartest/most clever moments? this isn't really a fair question either since he's, you know, a genius
I have plans to rank every Lalo moment on a scary/sexy/silly scale instead lol, but I like this idea too!
Lalo's Clever Moments (in chronological order)
Tumblr media
1. Lalo v Gus
Gus had been able to operate pretty smoothly under the radar because the cartel were not sending their best and brightest to ABQ. But as soon as Lalo shows up, he immediately figures out that Gus is up to something. He spots that the product has been altered and discovers that Gus is having something constructed in secret. He's even able to find Werner - how much more info would he have managed to get if Mike had shown up 10 minutes later? Gus is able to bullshit Bolsa with his story about the chicken cooler, but Lalo doesn't buy it.
Lalo's idea to have Domingo rat out Gus's dead drops was also very clever, and Gus takes the hit rather than expose Nacho as a spy. Which was a smart move on Gus's part, because without Nacho in his back pocket, he would have been in big trouble. Gus outplayed Lalo, but that's not the same thing as outsmarting him. Gus wanted him dead because he knew Lalo was closing in on him.
Tumblr media
2. Spotting Jimmy's bullshit Lalo figures out that Jimmy had lied about his story. Which - no duh, we might say, but at the same time, it's important to keep in mind that characters don't have all the same info we do. Lalo could have believed Jimmy's story about his car breaking down - that certainly seems like a reasonable explanation. But Lalo knew it smelled funny, then hunted down some evidence to back up his hunch.
Kim's Hail Mary saves the day, but if she hadn't been there, I'm sure Lalo would have gotten the whole story out of Jimmy. Again, a gutsy move and a bit of luck got the best of Lalo, but Lalo was smart to figure out Jimmy's story was a lie.
It’s not the most genius moment on this list, but again, it’s not really fair to judge character’s intelligence based on whether or not they know things that the audience has been made aware of but not the character. Lalo doesn’t get AMC+ He had to deduce it on his own, and once again he was right.
Tumblr media
3. The tunnel trap
"Escaping" and then doubling back around to get the jump on the assassins was an extremely clever and highly entertaining plan. Plus, he immediately figures out who betrayed him and who he was working for, and then has the clever plan to have the assassin call in his death, since faking his death will give him a lot of freedom to maneuver. Speaking of which...
Tumblr media
4. The body double
It's diabolical, but it's also genius. He even planned it down to getting the dental records to match!
Tumblr media
5. Prueba When Hector tells Lalo to find proof of Gus's deceit, Lalo heads to Germany because he knows he was onto something with Werner. Seducing the Widow Ziegler was a clever plan - one that worked - and then being able to track down Casper based on the gift he found in Margarethe's home was such a galaxy brain leap. He really has been Lalo Salamanca, Private Dick this season.
Tumblr media
6. The surprise razor
This was such a clever move - play possum until the guy gets close enough to slash his face and steal his axe. I love that Lalo apparently keeps razors in his pocket for this purpose.
Actually, whenever we see Lalo fight, he's using his brains as much as his brawn.
Honorable mention:
Tumblr media
7. Lalo decodes the human emotion of love He's a little confused why Kim's talking to him at first, but using his incredible skills at deduction, he’s able to figure out that if Kim is married to Jimmy, then that means she probably loves him, and therefore she would be worried about him. You could really see the wheels spinning as he puzzled this one out, but he got there! What a clever boy!

Do you think Ben America was all Lalo or was it all acting? He styles his hair different, his outfit didn't seem like something he'd wear at a formal gathering in his real life. But to Mrs. Ziegler this character worked perfectly though to the viewers we could see right through it
It was all acting. I've said it before and I'll say it again, but Tony did such an amazing job with this because he makes Lalo bad at acting, but not so bad that it's unbelievable that some people would fall for it. I imagine that's a difficult line to walk as an actor.
Lalo is a very intelligent sociopath. He's really good at reading people and understanding their motivations, but he doesn't have the same sorts of feelings normal people have, which is why he comes across as hollow when mimics them And in Lalo's defense, the times we've seen his acting fail had other factors that made him less likely to succeed. Fred the Travelwire guy just had a strange encounter with Mike, who is a fantastic actor, but as soon as he was out from under Mike's spell, he started reflecting on how weird that whole situation was. So when Lalo shows up and asks about the exact same person that Mike was asking about, of course Fred is suspicious. Even if Lalo had given an Emmy-worthy performance, I still don't think he would have been able to convince Fred to show him the video footage. And Casper was literally hiding in the woods because he was scared to death that he was going to be murdered by criminals for knowing too much, so of course he immediately clocks Lalo as a threat, even though he was initially friendly (also, I think he recognized him? They did meet briefly when Gus showed Bolsa and Lalo the "chicken cooler"). And while Lalo could not for his life pull off "scared" for the judge at his bail hearing, he was at least able to mask what a freak he was enough that the judge granted him bail. Back to Margarethe - there is literally no reason for her to find Lalo suspicious. His seduction is successful because he makes sure their conversation revolves around her, which is part of why she found it so sexy. It's very flattering to have an attractive person hang on your every word. Lalo was confident he could seduce her because he knew how to give her exactly what she wanted. You don't have to be completely convincing if you're playing into what people want to believe
