Dead Boy Detectives has everything:

Co Dependent queer platonic tough to define Best Freinds who would and have gone to hell for each other. they have an office with a cupboard full of board games, and a long history of Noodle Incident cases of '04, and also a bunch of maneuvers with code names. They are also ghosts who solve mysteries for other ghosts.

One is a sassy well read diva in a stupid little bowtie. he keeps meticulous notes, and went to hell on a technicality. he has no rizz and has a sexual awakening at the hands (paws?) of a supernatural Cat King

the other is a cheerful happy bruiser, the brawn with a pocket demension only he can navigate in his backpack, a magic cricket bat, and wells of anger deep down

they team up with a cool psychic (whos also a pretty tree) dealing with her asshole abusive boyfriend who was literally a demon while also trying to restore her memories (she also has a hilarious hate off off with the nerdy one)

then they add a sweet shut in who isn't very brave but is very inquisitive and has excellent reading comprehension and is actually the most brave

and their landlady is a hot goth Sapphic butcher who is done with their shit (but not really)

and the main antagonist is a cunt serving witch with an iron cane chewing up the scenery, just camp queen obsessed with Beauty and Revenge as she should be

she turns her crow familiar into an astrology loving twink to honeypot the nerdy one but the crow catches feelings whoops

the cat king who deserves his own mention again. he's here to seduce a stuffy British detective/tease, cause problems on purpose, reluctantly help solve those problems and mostly slut it up.

a bureaucrat learns to VERY reluctantly embrace the beautiful power of friendship after being swallowed by a fish

its set in a gorgeous seaside town with a light house! and a malt shop!

because this is all A Scooby Doo homage!

It's an episodic Case Of The Episode format! with strong serialized elements!

and as if that wasn't enough there's even Death of The Endless.

what more could any person possibly want in a show.

oh and there's a lot of really interesting themes around internalized homophpbia, abusive relationships and trauma and toxic anger and learning to love and trust and help other people again in spite of and because of the bad parts.

Reasons why I'm gonna be writing the DBD swap AU proper:

-Crystal using 1920's slang and dressing like she stepped right out of a performance of Chicago

-Niko using her book-smart detective skills to the extreme

-Getting to twist Charles's arc in another direction with the whole amnesia plotline, with the added bonus of him actually having acted like an ass before he got possessed

-Charles knowing he's bi from the start

-Edwin knowing he's gay from the start and being the one to curtly inform Crystal how bi she is

-Edwin being an old-school nerd with an extensive knowledge of D&D, noir movies, and Agatha Christie novels

-Esther and the Night Nurse being bitter exes

-Thomas/the Cat King running a bakery and has a metal rolling pin as his weapon of choice instead of a cleaver

-Angie as a punk siren who takes Polaroids and listens to Chappell Roan (with a look that is, in fact, heavily inspired off of the siren from the "Casual" music video)

-Jenny as an afterlife worker with a blunt bob and a rumpled vest-dress-shirt-and-slacks combo that makes her 1000x hotter than she is in canon

-Esther in black-feathered everything

-Delirium cameo in place of Despair

-And, of course, the Palaski content

The den is as they left it, except for the woman sitting on their sofa. She is all in black, and the ankh necklace gleams upon her chest. She has the kindest smile. 

 “Hello, boys,” she says. “I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure.” 

 “Yes, well,” says Edwin stiffly, “I hope you will appreciate that we have worked very hard to keep it that way.” 

 “I do appreciate it,” says Death. “I do.”

Assinging the endless to dead boy detectives characters because I can. (With explanations using a mix of comic and tv show lore)

Edwin - dream This was a hard choice, and while Despair was the more Canon choice as she claimed him as her friend in the 7th episode. Alternatively, I like exploring the similarities in dream and Edwin's character arch. In the comics edwin died in 1916 and escaped hell in 1989 much like the show, in the comics dream was kidnapped from 1916-1989 as opossed to the show where he escapes in 2020 or 2021 (I am unsure as to which one) they also both go through archs of finding companionship/acecpting people into their life and finding a greater purpose/finding peace with the one they're given. They're also both the bitchy intellectual type and hate most people.

Charles - destruction. I see so much fan content with him and desire, and while I see the vision, I have to disagree. (I also wanted to save them for the much more obvious choice) Destruction abandoned his position after he saw science being used as a tool for destruction because he didn't want to be the cause of massive devastation or obliteration (paraphrased from destructions page on the sandman wiki) and if that's not so incredibly Charles I don't know what is. Charles arch, we see him deal with this destructive type of anger he wants nothing to do with, so much so he represses all of it with a smile until it becomes too much.

Crystal - destiny. I gave her destiny because her arch and plotting in so intertwined with Edwin and Charles's it feels like it was nothing but destiny. Without her they wouldn't of even noticed the Becky Jackson case, the start of everything. Nothing would've happened without her. Because of her charles faced things he was hiding from himself for years, edwin let other people into his life, they wouldn't of saved niko if Crystal never had that quick interaction with her in episode one. She is so intertwined into everything I wouldn't be surprised if she was crafted by destiny himself.

Niko - death. There are multiple reasons why I gave niko death (including and in spite of the obvious). The biggest one is her future role as the principal, an employee of the afterlife and death. This is also another case of the personalities lining up. Death is seen as welcoming and kind despite being hated and feared as a concept. Death is also seen as wise and understands her role in life she is also the endless dream is closest with. On the sound of her wings when dream is feeling down about his quest for his tools being she allows him to shadow doing her job and offers him advice about his own state. I also just think death and dream's relationship is so similar to niko and Edwin's.

The cat king - desire. Really, this one is obvious. I don't know what you want me to say. His kingdom is all about want and pleasure, wuth is literally desire. His entire role is just to wake edwin up to his own desires. This is such a common concept that the most popular head Canon for him is that he is desires child.

Jenny - despair. I almost gave despair to edwin along with dream given their Canon interaction, but I decided otherwise. We don't know much about Jenny's backstory, but things can be assumed and interpreted certain ways. She owns her family's butcher shop but no family is ever mentioned (outside of a quick anecdote about her father in episode 5 but more on that later), she doesn't seem to have any friends or a social life for that matter. The letters, she reads them and follows up on the but is immediately off put on the idea of a date, which ended horribly. Her father, described as an acholohic and raging narcissist, couldn't have been a man who provided a great childhood either, yet she still took up his butcher shop. We can assume he's out of the picture for one reason or another as Jenny runs the shop herself. The first piece of advice she offers essentially boils down to people who are selfish, it can be assumed this is pulled from personal experience. Jenny is a character surrounded by despair and has grown so comfortable in it she doesn't even notice it anymore.

Tragic mick - delirium. The only endless to have 2 forms, delirium used to be delight before she evolved to delirium for reasons unknown to even destiny. Mick initially seen as comfortable in his human for until we learn about the washer woman. Niko gives him a piece of sea glass in hope it will help but instead we see him descend further into the quite madness he's proven himself into. Then we hear his story, a tragedy about a walrus forec to live the rest of his life as a human because of a bad decision. He's winds up mad (or delirious if you will) by thus decision, now wanting nothing more than to go back to being a walrus.

Bonus (Esther, monty, and the night nurse as various sandman characters) (little explanation, sorry)

Esther- the Corinthian. Created (or blessed) by a god-like deity for a certain purpose but took it too far out of pure selfishness

Monty- Mathew. Simply because they're both anthropomorphic birds.

The night nurse- lucienne/ lucien. A loyal assiant to their respective endless. Certain events cause them to drift from what they've always done or thought.

It would take a while for Milo to believe that. He still doesn't think Mal ever truly loved him. Just put up with him. And MC wasn't entirely aware of what they were doing so how could that be love?

What's Morpheus' thing with cats? I know he's got his own Dream (Cat) God form in their eyes- and it really is kinda cool and sweet to see how he treats even something as "lowly" as a cat with respect for them as a person, like with the Prophet cat- but I mean like besides that. Is he just good with them? Does he like cats?

Neil once put Dream’s 50 most defining traits together for a trading card, and one of those traits was “feline”. So it must go beyond just liking cats 🤣

Why do we call people or animals feline or cat-like? There’s usually something about them that suggests being physically “bendy”, but also personality traits like being a bit haughty, a bit shifty, a bit stealthy and sneaky, a bit “I’m above you, minion” (I mean, the look™️ they give you). Being soft but also turning on you within the blink of an eye. Either because you deserve it or just because they feel like it (yes, I’ve had cats all my life, lovable little shits they are 🤣). So I think that all ties in with being a dream—never fully graspable, always a bit distant, being there and gone, being a bit of a shapeshifter, being the most wonderful thing one moment only to make you go, “WTF?!” the next…

Maybe Dream and cats just have a mutual understanding—they aren’t called “creatures of the night” for nothing.

Or maybe Neil just had cats when he wrote it 🤣 It’s not unlikely…

(Exiles is my favourite issue for many reasons, but the kitten is one of them.)

Episode 7 is another favorite. Also had to do another pause on the rewatch because it's been hard to focus on watching things. But, I'm back again and almost done so it's all good.

Honestly, the disheveled and covered in dirt look is really working for Esther. And then that plus the blood after she kills the Cat King? Damn

Do we know how the Cat King knows about Edwin’s time in hell? I feel like I’m missing something here, but I don’t remember how he finds out about it to tell Esther. My best guess is that one of the cats he sent to spy on the kids overheard something about it, but I’m not sure. I may be misremembering

The lightbulb in the closet scene starts going slower as Crystal and Charles begin talking quietly. I know it’s just losing momentum and probably not on purpose, but it does make a nice parallel to the way they lose steam in their discussion

Speaking of the closet scene, I think it’s hilarious that Crystal leaves it with a coat in hand. I can just imagine her angrily taking one down before storming out and Charles just awkwardly standing there until she opens the door. Hilarious image

The Night Nurse’s face at the beginning of the flashback seems all smug to me, like she really believes she won’t find a thing that could make her change her mind

Edwin actually does voices for the characters as he reads to Charles, he’s so precious. And his giggle as he finishes reading kills me. Do you think this is the first time after returning to hell that he’s gotten to be just a boy? To laugh and enjoy something after all the torment?

Maxine has a bunch of paper by her side on the stairs, and later we see her ripping some paper up when the boys are running towards the exit. Do you think those are her letters to Jenny / potentially other women she stalked if the head canon that she’s done that before is true?

Maybe it’s because the Doll House is super dark, but I actually never noticed that the thing that startles Edwin when he’s looking in the mirror is Despair’s face appearing out of nowhere

“I do not have my book” Do you think he freaked out when he realized he’d been taken without his notebook? That the one thing that could get him out of there had been left behind? Do you think he panicked about how long it would take him to find the way out this time?

Jenny sees David magically turn on the lights and basically teleport to Crystal’s side, and she still goes to try and get him to back up

Never noticed just how creepy the drawings for Esther's pain device are

The head of Esther's cane is a bird skull, so she and Monty both have that bird skull theming, which is find

You can hear Edwin's screams down the hall after the doll spider thing gets him again

I love that Charles not only packed a bomb and a molotov, he also packed them lit. Very efficient of him, though I do have to wonder if part of the bag's power is to keep things somewhat frozen in time so that the bombs don't explode in there

Also on the bomb scene, though, Edwin looks so baffled that Charles would throw a bomb at the doll spider demon

One of the people in the lust room is wearing socks and the idea of having socks drenched in blood is giving me sensory nightmares. 0/10 do not recommend. This point was originally going to be about the fact that poor Edwin has to go through lust barefoot, but I think that the socks are worse

The way Edwin screams for Charles when the lust people grab him feels really raw, but also like it's an instinct

God, Edwin's little smile after Charles says they have forever to figure it out kills me. There's so much relief and care in that smile and I just can't with it
