this only lasts so long, though, and the days very rapidly become turbulent and uncertain once again as feng xin remains paralyzed by a lack of clear decision and conflicted feelings surrounding what sort of life he is allowed to want. in a moment of desperation, or perhaps weakness maybe even madness, he finds himself glaring up at the statue of mu qing seated behind the altar in the temple and bitterly asking him what his secret is, how he's so capable of making decisions with such finality and perceived certainty. feng xin asks what the fuck he's supposed to do now. it isn't a prayer, not really, and though mu qing hears it he doesn't take it as one. something (or someone) else does, however, and the next day feng xin finds himself unceremoniously ascending to heaven as a middle court official, tasked with filling out the sparse numbers in the recently established palace of xuan zhen.

neither feng xin nor mu qing are particularly happy with this, for all the obvious reasons, but there is nothing they can do except grudgingly work out a clumsy sort of dynamic that is both brand new and same as it always was. in spite of what is unspoken between them and the fallout it brings, feng xin finds himself oddly at peace in a position that is so familiar to him. and though he would refuse to admit it, perhaps he is at ease here. once again in the orbit of someone who knows him, as fraught as their dynamic may be.

and then one day feng xin ascends to godhood and everything changes again.
