Habstrakt Live Set - Hollywood Palladium 2023

This is a 90-minute audio recording of Habstrakt Hollywood Palladium live set recorded on Saturday, September 2, 2023. The set began at 12:10 AM the following morning.

I've seen many shows at the Hollywood Palladium. Deadmau5, Voyd, RL Grime, to name a few EDM acts. But I've been seeing shows there since the 90's, when Beastie Boys and Green Day used to play the venue. It's a cool space and an historic site, but I haven't been impressed with the sound quality in recent years. My main complaint has been the lack of bass.

That's why I was surprised by what I heard last night. It actually sounded pretty good. I did sense that the sound engineer waited until the final 30 minutes to really unleash the bass. But when everything was running full blast, I thought the mix sounded decent. And the recording reflects that. Usually the audio sounds muddy. But this time, I had to do very little adjusting to get a nice sound.

The sound wasn't the only good thing about the show. The crowd was beautiful, too.

This was the best audience I have experienced in quite a while. The vibes were pristine. No bad energy, no one being pushy, no moshing, everyone being friendly and polite. Apparently, Habstrakt attracts a really wholesome crowd. I was passing out stickers, trading kandi and making friends left and right. Such a refreshing change. In the couple years following Covid, many crowds have felt uncharacteristically aggressive and insensitive. So this was a welcome breath of fresh air.

Here's what I know about Habstrakt: not much. I know he's a French-born producer living and working in LA. But I also know he's producing some of the sickest bass house and tech house on the planet.

I know him primarily from seeing his name all over the Beatport genres I follow. When I see Habstrakt listed in the credits of a track, I know it's going to be a high impact banger.

Then there's the fact that I missed him at EDC Vegas this year.

I knew about the EDC set. I wanted to hit the set and record it. But, it was a closing set. No bueno.

I'm a middle-age raver and I go harder than 95-percent of my peers. Most of them stopped attending events years ago and would never dream about going back to EDC in their "old age." But I go. I go all three days, and I arrive early and stay late. I outpace and outlast kids half my age. But I have to draw the line somewhere. For me, the cutoff at EDC is 4 AM.

Believe me, I know how magical the closing sets are. But I can't do them because I can't get stuck in the post-show traffic jam. I like to pull out of the parking lot no later than 5 AM, just as the music stops inside the venue. I like to be back in my hotel room listening to the recordings by 6 or 7 AM. If I stay for the final set, I get stuck in parking and can't relax for another couple hours, which throws off my three-day schedule of eat-sleep-rave-repeat.

But leaving early means I have to sacrifice the closing sets. I've missed a million Kaskade Redux sunrise sets because of this, and I regret missing all of them.

Well, it was particularly painful to miss Habstrakt at EDC. I've been hyper focused on bass house lately, and Habstrakt is one of the frontrunners of the genre. Reports from his EDC set were overwhelmingly positive, but there were precious few videos of the set. When the Hollywood Palladium show was announced, I knew I would finally get my chance to experience Habstrakt live.

As mentioned earlier, the sound was better than usual. The crowd was better than usual, too. And the music was perfect.

Habstrakt delivered a tight 90-miunte set. Most of it was unrelenting tech house and bass house interspersed with a few breaks and breakdowns. Very danceable, which is the aspect I love the most. I'm not familiar enough with Habstrakt's catalog to know what percent of the tracks were produced by him, but I assume the number was high. The mic work was sparce and heartfelt. I could tell he was having fun and feeling grateful to be there.

Visuals and stage production were minimal but effective. The main visuals were provided by a wall of vintage CRT monitors behind the dj decks. The effect was retro but it aligned nicely with Habstract's grimy, high-contrast brand.

I'm very happy with the sound quality of this recording. Whereas most of my Hollywood Palladium recordings have issues, this one sounded close to perfect out the gate. I applied very subtle eq adjustments and brought the levels up, that's it. (Edit: I went back and applied my normal effects chain to increase the crispness and 'liveliness'.)

I'm going to check the mix in a few listening environments and adjust if necessary. Otherwise, enjoy it.

So checking my email yesterday I saw what I thought was phishing email. It had the Live Nation branding and said my ticket was ready for Boris Brejcha the next night – tonight – a Factory 93 show at Grand Park in LA. I was sure it was a phishing attempt because there was no way I would knowingly buy a ticket for Boris the day after Habstrakt.

Just to verify everything, I logged into my Live Nation account and...what do you know. I DO have a ticket for Boris Brejcha tonight. Bahahaha!

So after I get finished posting and sharing this, I will chill for a few hours, eat something, take a shower, get dressed, and do it all over again!

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Random thoughts

I love Mo'nique and I am glad she's being vindicated and getting everything she's been fighting for over the past 10+ years but her special, My name is Mo'nique should have been anything but a stand up special. It was very informative and I learned a lot about her and her life but maybe she should have done a documentary about her life over the last 10+ years or so or a loosely based biopic about her entire life and career but comedy specials are supposed to be funny and an hour of hearing about someone's trauma, while informative and well delivered, was not exactly funny. I enjoyed it but it wasn't a comedy special. I would have preferred it to be something else because I missed the jokes.

Side note, I hope Mo'nique has healed and made peace with her trauma or she's going to be in the same position she was in for the past 10 years. I am happy to see that Lee Daniels was in the audience supporting her. Mo'nique is so funny and talented and I'm glad she's working again.

As much as I've been secretly loving the Xscape drama from the past month or so, I need them to wrap it up by close of business next week. The finale is Sunday, which means everyone has three days to get their reviews out and say their peace and clear the air because after next week, I don't want to hear about it anymore. Whatever they say Latocha and Rocky did, they did, Tamika was a doormat who burned bridges and lost out on bags due to wanting the approval of her sister and mother, Kandi got to the bag and everyone is jealous, I am sure she has more than enough dirt on her and if anyone has any true tea on Kandi, now is the time to put it out there but since it's not even being rumored, I am going to assume that Kandi is less messy but just as messy, Tiny goes along to get along and she made a video to capitalize on this mess but spent 15 minutes saying not much of anything. SWV is creating drama on the show about being the "opening act" because these ladies know they don't want to do what needs to be done to get headliner money, which is truly invest in their shows. SWV may have sold more records and may have more bops but Xscape, namely Kandi and Tiny, are about their business and know how to get it done. SWV should get out their feelings and take notes.

So, it looks like Ashley and Wendy were seen filming for season 8 of Rhop, I wonder if Robyn will be back. She's not going to tell the truth about Juan and he won't tell the truth or even talk about it because he's trying to protect his mistress, so call it a wash. Robyn can make money another way.

As much as I applaud Bobby being where he is today in his life after all he's been through, maybe Bobby needs to figure out another way to make money because he is struggling through those New Edition shows. I get it, age, years of drug and alcohol abuse, health issues and just life in general but how long are y'all going to delude yourself into being grateful for Bobby being alive but he can't even get through one show without being helped on and off the stage. Maybe it is time to retire but Bobby has three young kids, probably does have not access to his catalog or masters as he only wrote a few songs, royalties may not be a lot depending on the business decisions he has made over the last 40 or so years, so all he has is touring and his life story, which is why he is always retelling his life story with Whitney Houston even though they've been divorced 17 years and she's been dead 11.

I get that music and art doesn't always age well but singing a song "back stage, under aged, the girl is gonna do me" at 20 or 21, when "underaged" may only be a 4 year or so age difference, is different than singing that line as a 54, 55 year old man. Maybe omit it, change it up, or let the audience sing it but t's a bit creepy. All of New Edition are old enough to have grandchildren that are teenagers or young adults and dating girls young enough to be your grand child is a bit, ick.

Speaking of underaged, I need Marques Houston to stop talking and just let people speculate. The math is not mathing. So there is proof that Marques Houston and his wife Maya, knew of each other when she was 13, nothing illegal there but we're supposed to believe that they magically began dating the day she turned 18, okay. It is weird and creepy but whatever. We're not stupid, stop trying to convince us of this math.

The reason why B2K can't get it together is because something nefarious, and probably very close to what Raz B has been alleging all these years, and they don't know how to reconcile everything that comes with that, including the confusing feelings, questioning of sexuality, probable attraction to their group mate, the anger, how Omarion was placed on a pedestal and given a pass, which is why it is always three against 1. They need a therapist but I don't even think a therapist can fix this because the issue is very deep and complex and no one seems to want to talk about it.

Julia Child - The French Chef - Boeuf Bourguignon

Child joined the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in 1942 after finding that she was too tall to enlist in the Women's Army Corps (WACs) or in the U.S. Navy's WAVES.

She began her OSS career as a typist at its headquarters in Washington but, because of her education and experience, soon was given a more responsible position as a top-secret researcher working directly for the head of OSS, General William J. Donovan.

As a research assistant in the Secret Intelligence division, she typed 10,000 names on white note cards to keep track of officers. For a year, she worked at the OSS Emergency Sea Rescue Equipment Section (ERES) in Washington, D.C. as a file clerk and then as an assistant to developers of a shark repellent needed to ensure that sharks would not explode ordnance targeting German U-boats.

From 1944–1945, she was posted to Kandy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), where her responsibilities included "registering, cataloging and channeling a great volume of highly classified communications" for the OSS's clandestine stations in Asia.

She was later posted to Kunming, China, where she received the Emblem of Meritorious Civilian Service as head of the Registry of the OSS Secretariat.

When Child was asked to solve the problem of too many OSS underwater explosives being set off by curious sharks, "Child's solution was to experiment with cooking various concoctions as a shark repellent," which were sprinkled in the water near the explosives and repelled sharks. Still in use today, the experimental shark repellent "marked Child's first foray into the world of cooking...”

For her service, Child received an award that cited her many virtues, including her “drive and inherent cheerfulness”. As with other OSS records, her file was declassified in 2008. Unlike other files, her complete file is available online.

Julia Child had a large impact on American households and housewives. Because of the technology in the 1960s, the show was unedited, causing her blunders to appear in the final version and ultimately lend "authenticity and approachability to television."

According to Toby Miller in "Screening Food: French Cuisine and the Television Palate," one mother he spoke to said that sometimes "all that stood between me and insanity was hearty Julia Child" because of Child's ability to soothe and transport her.

In addition, Miller notes that Child's show began before the feminist movement of the 1960s, which meant that the issues housewives and women faced were somewhat ignored on television.

“Hey! Long time no see!”

Carisi practically leaped from his seat and rushed towards Rafael. The detective seized hold of his hand vigorously, but suddenly stopped short.

“I… sorry,” he said. “I didn’t think… was that too much?”

“From you, Carisi?” Rafael quipped. “Always.” Still he shook the other man’s hand and returned his smile.

“What brings you by?” Carisi asked.

“Natalia wanted to make sure that you’re coming to dinner tonight.”

“Wouldn’t miss it!” Carisi beamed. “If she needs any help with the gravy, I can come by a little early.”

“My wife has the matter under control,” Rafael said, slapping Carisi’s back…

…and spying Rollins back at her desk. She turned her attention to her computer, trying to look busy. Rafael walked towards her and spied her blank screen.

“That’s some case you’re trying to crack,” he said. Rollins blushed and kicked away from her seat, her hands balled into fists at her sides.

“Sorry,” she said. “I really wasn’t trying to avoid you.”

“Funny because that’s exactly what it looked like,” Rafael said. 

Rollins shuffled her feet and nibbled on her bottom lip. This was as close as they had been since the night of his arrest, and he started to speak when Rollins got the first word.

“Sorry,” she repeated.

“That again?” he asked.

“You know what I’m getting at, Barba,” she said. “If I hadn’t been at Eve’s place, then maybe---”

“Cutter would have figured out another way,” Rafael said. “Man was out for a scapegoat.”

“Deck was stacked against us,” Rollins admitted. “But you paid the heavier price.”

He didn’t… couldn’t object. But had he to do it over again, he still would have made the move to protect her. And Dodds.

Naturally Natalia.

“Let’s hope for a better boss the third time around,” Rafael said.

“No one can be worse than Cutter,” Rollins said. “Or Ward.”

“Agreed.”

He felt the urge to hug her but just touched his hand to her cheek, his fingers tapping against her skin.

“So, we’ll see you tonight, too?” he asked.

Rollins blush brightened under the few tears she blinked back, and he accepted her hug, took some comfort in the fact that she had come through the other side of her own kind of hell. Another sign that the light at the end of the longest tunnel was within his reach.

“Be there with bells on,” Rollins said.

“Trevor said the same thing,” Rafael replied with a grin. “Lots of jingle jangle on the horizon.”

“Perfect time of year for it!” Carisi declared. Rafael watched them stand close, their voices mingling in low whispers. The picture seemed perfect, and his steps felt lighter as he knocked on the next door to cross his line of sight.

“Holding down the fort without me?”

Liv beckoned Rafael into her office and hugged him close even before she started to close the door, just leaving it cracked.

“Holding my own,” she assured him. “But of course, I’m counting the days until we get you back.”

Drawing in a deep breath, Rafael slumped into the chair before her desk, cracking his knuckles and lowering his eyes.

“Would be nice if there was any kind of word… one way or the other,” he admitted. “I don’t suppose that you’ve heard anything.”

“Sorry, Rafa,” she sadly confessed. “I can put some feelers out. Maybe speak to Bill and---”

“Don’t do that,” Rafael cautioned. “I’m sure he has his hands full with Mike. Any update on that?”

“Think he might be moving to OCCB,” Liv said.

“That’s where he’s landing?” Rafael remarked. “And his father is alright with that?”

“Bill thinks it could put him good with the FBI,” Liv said.

“The Chief is always thinking.”

“Don’t know if Mike is overjoyed,” Liv said.

“I can imagine.”

“But the way it stands, he’s not getting a say in his second chance.”

“Doesn’t bode well for me,” Rafael said.

“You’re going to land on your feet,” Liv promised, reaching across the desk to pat his wrist. They sat without speaking, his ear turned towards the slightly open door. He heard phones ringing and voices discussing the best way to follow a lead, who to bring in as a witness. Would he ever get back to this world?

“As long as you’re not thinking of playing for the other side,” Liv carefully commented.

“Come on,” he said, his lips curling into a smirk. “Just because I have an itch doesn’t mean I’m going to scratch until my skin’s raw.”

“Glad to hear it,” she said with a little laugh, reclining back in her seat and folding her arms across her chest. “But awkward metaphors aside---”

“Are you suddenly not a fan of my wordplay?” he challenged.

“Now you come on,” she said. “Got enough of your back catalog in my brain for a long car trip.”

“Pleasure to keep you company,” he said, seeing her roll her eyes before she narrowed her stare.

“The jokes aside, how are you holding up?”

“Fine, I…”

His voice trailed off, and he left his seat. Pacing the room and lingering at the window, Rafael wondered if it was all a pipe dream, if his days defeating the defense were nothing more than a piece of the past.

“Maybe it’s better that I see you with this,” he finally said, his long fingers surrounding the visitor’s pass.

“No,” Liv said. “Not your best look.”

“You are on a roll today, Lieutenant,” he scoffed.

“Rafael, I’m not asking if you’ll blow the world away the next time you face a jury. Because that much is true.”

“Have you been talking to my wife?” he asked.

“Not about this,” Liv swore. “If we’re on this same wavelength, it’s because we both know you that well. But I’m not talking to the ADA right now.”

Standing slowly, she slid to his side and gently grabbed his shoulder.

“I’m talking to my friend,” she stressed. “How is everything else? Is there anything that you need to talk about?”

What could he say? He was happy in the townhouse with Natalia, happy in their bed as they wrapped presents and she cuddled against his chest night after night. But in his mind, something was missing. His wife would never say… maybe she truly didn’t see a problem.

“I… let’s just say that I want to be Natalia’s husband again. Not just her… roommate.”

The words sounded pathetic as soon as they dripped off his tongue, and a part of him was ready for Liv to take his hands and soothe him with a few sweet words when she slapped his shoulder.

“Rafael, she hardly thinks of you like that.”

With her hands on her hips, Liv lifted both eyebrows and waited. Something in her stare… so much in the sound of her speech made his face flush.

“Of course, you’re right,” he said.

“I always am,” Liv answered. “Haven’t you learned that much by now?”

“How could I not when you tell everyone as much all the time?”

He was ready for her to look annoyed, a retort lying in wait at the back of his throat when she laughed and touched his arms.

“Just hurry up and get back here so I can keep telling you,” Liv said.

“Maybe a New Year’s resolution.”

“Good plan.”

She poured out two cups of coffee, and they sat again, talking about Noah’s presents and his gifts for the girls.

“So no hippos this year?” Liv asked.

“Bite your tongue,” Rafael said. “Violetta could share Harold.”

“Poor Hazel and Holly!”

Shifting in his seat he started to speak when his phone pinged.

“Hold on a sec…” Reading the words on the screen, his heart splintered before sinking in his chest.

“What’s up?” Liv worriedly asked. “Bad news?”

“Of all things…”

Saying nothing else, he turned his phone to Liv, and she retrieved her glasses to read the message.

“Dear Mr. Barba. We regret to inform you that Katie’s Kandy Kastle is unable to deliver---”

“Can you believe it?” Rafael snarled, stuffing the phone in his pocket.

“That you’re buying something from the KKK?” Liv quipped. “Never in a billion years.”

“Cute,” Rafael sneered. “It’s a place in Connecticut. Natalia loved their chocolates as a child. Alessia told me…. Alessia!”

He dialed his mother-in-law quickly. Again. And again.
