Britain is sure giving us a preview of the chaos America will have if the MAGA Republicans gain power in our next two elections. The tax cuts of 2016 showed Reaganomics never works and never will. What we’re seeing in our economics today is greedy corporations who have no incentive to share the wealth with the middle class. While corporations are free to raise prices to maintain a gluttony of profit, middle class workers receive no cost of living increase. Corporations don’t seem to realize they are biting the hand that feeds them since capitalism is based on the consumers ability to buy. Today’s capitalism is about profits to shareholders while starving the consumer and hollowing out the middle class. Economics now is about moving money upward in the food chain of income disparity. This is all moving toward America becoming a failed state unless we can turn this around! President Biden is on the right track by building wealth from the bottom up and the middle out. We, the People, all of us this time sharing the wealth !

watching cathy garcia molina’s only ü . boy and girl. two neighbours like siblings who grew up together. she’s cursed to die by 25. her entire matriarchal line has, during revolution, martial law and associated illness. at 24 she receives a diagnosis of systemic lupus (can anyone guess why I watched it yet). he hides her diagnosis from her, trying to foil the medical system’s nocebo effect by letting her stay ignorant and planning her pleasure. so maybe, just maybe. .. her own joy can overcome the prognosis. over time, through these practices, he comes to reckon with and accept the inevitability of his own death. then comes the only cgm plot twist possible... turns out he’s the one dying and she’s gonna live and the lupus diagnosis was a bureaucratic mix up. so they get married knowing life isn’t promised anyway, and on their way to living this stage of union, die in a car crash. since they're still together it's inconsequential. the supremes’ you can’t hurry love ringing thru the whole film. there's a temporality here that i miss... living in relation to imminent death without forcing, without racing. rallying hard for desire while learning some kind of sacred obedience to the limits of mortality. bahala na. isn’t there an old story in this? doesn’t it feel like alamat brought forward?

first poster gives you an idea of the bigger picture - how they figure in society, how possibly class and socio-economic status comes in to play. a fish out of water story for caroline, and caroline being bingo's north star, almost disregarding his surroundings. second poster are character posters, almost character studies, with her still being his north star, and her looking wistfully some place else, possibly with her back turned away from her own life/upbringing. the closer we look, the more they are on a level playing field....interesting to note though, that for what is supposed to be a love story our leads aren't eye to eye yet, or at least she hasn't met his eyes. wonder what it will take for her to finally see her to finally see him. if that's even the story to be told? oh, also reminds me of what ms. vrv said about why the lq team up worked, not a comparison but hear me out, that, 'nakatunghay yung lalaki said babae,' we follow the boy's pov, at least in this poster.

Hello, Love, Goodbye (2019)

At points, Hello, Love, Goodbye feels like an elongated teleserye - a Filipino telenovela - the kind which tells overwhelmingly dramatic stories which entertain but are forgotten come the next day's episode. However, the meat is composed of true drama, the kind that hits home whether you’re from the Philippines or not.

Joy (Kathryn Bernardo) is a registered nurse working as a domestic helper in Hong Kong to support her blind father and two siblings still living at home. She dreams of moving her family - including her mother (Maricel Laxa), also working in Hong Kong - to Canada, where her options won’t be restricted. With just four months' worth of savings required, she meets Ethan (Alden Richards). The attraction is there but their romance is doomed - or is it?

Directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, the film is steeped in Filipino culture but anyone will understand her frustration as she works a thankless job that’s beneath her under suffocating circumstances. The rules imposed on her by Hong Kong are so strict, and her desire to escape so great anything going wrong means the end of the world but her family doesn't understand. Is it so unfair for her to pursue her dreams this one time?  When everyone else is giving the shirts off their backs for the greater good it may seem so. Then again, if the people who say they love her truly do, how could they deny her this?

The drama emerging from Joy struggling with her own desire vs. her family’s and overcoming the many obstacles which come her way are all terrific. The romantic plot between her and Ethan also works, to a lesser degree. Despite the leads having good chemistry, Joy spends a little bit too long scrunching her brow at him. The courtship is sweet. It’s just that a little bit more time with them as a couple and you’d REALLY wonder whether she should choose Hong Kong or Canada. There are many scenes spent with Joy’s Filipino friends and Ethan’s roommates but these characters have no depth. They’re just comedic sidekicks you could’ve trimmed out or at least reduced in number. One last criticism I have concerns a scene where someone (I won’t say who) is sent to the hospital. The makeup to create their injuries is laughable. The scene itself is good. It puts your heart through the wringer so I’ll forgive it but come on. They could’ve done better.

To be successful, Hello, Love, Goodbye needed to stick the landing, it needed to fully commit to its themes and drama. Thankfully, it does. You’ll get swept up by the romance, emotions, and Kathryn Bernardo’s performance. You couldn’t remake this movie with a different cast or in a different language and get the same kind of success as you do here. So apparently the HLG fever doesn't end with the film! Just found out about this while I was randomly scrolling through some HLG-related articles (not entirely sure which site that was, may be cosmopolitan ph? Idk!) and tadaaa! There exists a novel that tells MORE about the tale of Ethan and Joy, and since I have been obsessing with Alden and Kath and the movie lately, I decided to purchase a copy. So excited to read this and give my thoughts, I have also read some positive reviews so I can't waiiiiiit omfg!!!
