Album Review of the Week: The Pretty Reckless - Hit Me Like A Man EP (2012) ☆☆☆☆

After their successful debut, Light Me Up, The Pretty Reckless embarked on their second headlining tour and released an EP with 3 new songs as well as two live tracks. The live tracks include their most commercially well-known hit "Make Me Wanna Die".

The new songs feature a darker tone than that of the preceding album. Hit Me Like A Man, aside from its obvious dark title, features very heavy thick guitar riffs that propel the vocal melody satisfyingly - backing up Taylor's powerful voice.

Under the Water tones things down a little bit with an acoustic intro that bursts back into the heavy drums and guitar. Taylor's voice is perfect for this intensely emotional tune. It conveys intense desperation to match the music and lyrics. This is by far my favorite song on this release and likely a top 5 from the band itself.

Since You're Gone is another favorite and so fun to sing! I used to be in a covers band and this was one of the songs I made sure was on the setlist. It's simple and seems like it needed more fleshing out, but gets the rock feel across! Thanks for asking :)

Cold Blooded brings in one of the guys for vocals! I was going to shout out who, but I actually found a typo in the liner notes! It has a spot to credit "guitar, vocals:" but the name is blank! Wikipedia tells me that it is Ben Phillips. This track is a bit less memorable than the others, probably due to its slowness, they never stick as well in my head. It is also kind of cheesy when the music stops and they say "you can't trust a cold blooded" in unison and then "woman" with Ben starting the wo- and they both end the word. Regardless, it is still a solid track that has more of a blues structure.

when you were with dallas, you felt free. he was so reckless, so hardcore, and completely bananas. you loved to tag along on his stupid adventures, and now, your new outing is to check on ponyboy and johnny at the church that they’re hiding out in.

“you know how to drive, doll?” he asks you after picking you up, tossing you the keys. “buck won’t let me drive this beauty, but he trusts you.”

you laugh. “well he’s stupid to trust me, because i can’t drive.”

“you’re kiddin’,” he can’t hold his dumb smirk back. the endearing smirk that he gives you whenever he’s about to do something you won’t like. “c’mon, try it then, sweetie.”

“no way, dal,” you shake your head, but he’s already taken your spot in the passengers seat. “i’ll kill you, i’ll crash the car or something, i dunno-“

“i trust ya, stop freakin’ out,” he interuppts, dismissive of your worries. “i’ll teach ya how to work everythin’.”

you debate, but nod and sit in the drivers seat. gosh, it really was more intimidating up there.

“it’s pretty simple, hun,” he starts out. “pedal to your left is your clutch, it’ll make the car drive, pedal in your middle is your break, and pedal to your right is gas. you’d be stupid to not figure it out.” he looks back at you after showing you the pedals, and see’s your expression. “no, no, no, don’t give me that look. you’ll be fine. i’ll hold the wheel for ya.”

he directs you further, and eventually, you get the car going. his left hand is on yours, holding the wheel from the passengers side, helping you keep the car steady.

dallas puts in an elvis cd, and the music echoes throughout tulsa. “finally don’t gotta listen to your shit music,” he teases.

you smile and roll your eyes. “oh shut it, dal, i know you secretly like lesley gore.”

“‘sunshine and lollipops’ is the worst song i’ve ever heard. i’d rather you crash the car than to listen to that fuckin’ mess.”

“you’re mean,” you tease back, and he laughs.

“alright, that’s it, i’m lettin’ go of the wheel. i’m letting you kill us.”

“no, no, no,” you insist. “don’t let go.”

“my arm is cramping, doll,”

“don’t care. never let me go.”

he smiles, and holds your hand a little tighter. the summer breeze is coating the entire convertible in its warmth, your hair is waving in the wind, and dallas is just watching you drive, the focus in your eyes unmatched.

you reach a red light, and finally get a short break to relax. you turn to dallas. “i dunno how you drive everywhere, dal, this is stressful.”

“baby, you’re doin’ just fine.” he assures. “haven’t even run over anything yet, that’s somethin’, huh?”

“i don’t wanna kill us, dal.”

he laughs at that. “i’d hope so.” he takes a drag of his cigarette, then looks around at everything. you’re out of tulsa, out of the city. “i ain’t never been to the country before.”

“really? it’s nice, huh? all the trees and fields and stuff.”

“it looks fuckin’ boring. nothin’ to do around here, does everyone just play checkers or somethin’?”

“you’re such a downer,” you joke. you look up, and realize the light has just turned green. “oh- dal, which one is the clutch, again?”

“you’re a dumbass.” is all he says.

“dal!” you insist, and he puts his hand up in fake surrender. “i mean it, i’m keeping these cars waiting.”

“it’s your far left, doll.” he finally tells you, and you thank him, and then start driving.

you continue driving to meet the boys, and the country scenery is engulfing the both of you. fields on farmland, apple orchards, small, sweet towns, everything was so wholesome and welcoming.

you feel free, like the world is just yours and dally’s. you were born to live this moment, to drive through the countryside in your red convertible, the sun hitting your faces so perfectly that it feels like a coming-of-age movie. you feel golden.

Quick-Fire Headcanons (11)

Solomon will go on roller coasters, but he has to ride with Asmo so that he can cling onto him for the entirety of the ride.

Simeon has multiple CDs in his car he doesn’t want anyone to find out about.

Levi and Satan have a habit of overthinking but are good at keeping everyone out of danger, especially if they work together.

Barbatos has two closets: one that houses a nearly endless supply of his uniforms, and the other for all other outfits.

Part of Solomon’s closet is full of borrowed clothes he “forgot” to return to his friends.

If Belphie had his way, he would go barefoot everywhere.

ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1098 FULL SUMMARY (AND SOME SCREENSHOTS)

⚠️Spoiler alert⚠️

This... this is disheartening, this is sad, messed up and disheartening... honestly if Luffy doesn't exterminate every single CD then I'm dropping OP forever. Let's get to the sauce:

-the chapter starts with the revolutionary army having a battle, and Kuma assisting in it despite Ivankov telling him not to go and that he was being reckless.

-since Ginny's disappearence, Kuma has gotten a lot more violent on the battlefield and has even fought against the enemy on his own and won.

-the revos receive a call from someone and when they pick up, the person tells them that they're sorry, and that their whole troop has been killed. This person of course, is none other than Ginny.

-Kuma tells his comrades that he will go rest on the ship since he was pretty exhausted from the battle, a battle that lasted three years that he single handedly won.

-two years after Ginny's disappearance, the revos receive a call from her, we can hear a baby crying in the background and she tells Kuma that she may not make it because she was seriously ill, she also tells him that she had been forced to marry a celestial dragon (we're not told who this CD is) and that he threw her out with her newborn baby after They both got the disease. She tells Kuma that she is Currently at the church where they used to live together. and that she made it over there by sailing under the sun and shielding her own baby using her own body.

-the sapphire scale disease is a very rare disease that causes the patient's skin to turn into a hard crystallized scale-like state upon contact with any natural light. So Ginny travelling to get back home while exposing herself to the sunlight and moonlight was literally a death sentence.

-Upon hearing that she's at the church, Kuma goes to find her, right before she says her last words "I have always, always loved you, Kuma..."

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD OH MY GOD ODA SHUT UP SHUT THE FUCK UP STOP THIS!!!!

GODDAMIT are you happy now????? You made Ginny die a terrible death, and the only man she ever loved didn't even hear her saying that she had always loved him!!!!! Fuck this shit god holy fuck!

-Kuma arrives at the church, it's empty, and we can see him kneeling in front of Ginny's dead body, we only see her hand and foot, they are badly damaged by the disease. Kuma starts Crying and holds her dead body in his arms before putting her into rest at a grave, the grave marker has her name on it, which is confirmed to be Ginny.

-Kuma takes it upon himself to raise little Bonney (he didn't name her bonney, it was Ginny who named her) however he is clueless about so many things regarding parenting, we see him asking the elderly for advice on how to make milk for Bonney 🥺 (they say that they would gladly help him but that he should put her in a cage so he won't crush her during his sleep... BROOOOO THESE ELDERLY MFS ARE SAVAGE AS HELL 💀💀💀)

-Kuma starts to balance between his work as revolutionary and a new surrogate parent. We see him holding the milk bottle so little Bonney can drink, and she chugs it in no time. Kuma calls her "a big eater" just like he used to do for Ginny.

-We see a montage of Bonney growing up, and she calls Kuma "papa", to which he burst out in tears (he reminds me of Kyros in this scene.... WHAT'S WITH ODA AND BIG SOFT DADS BEING ALL TEARJERKERS ?????) We see him assisting in revolutionary battles and training Sabo as well as taking care of his daughter in his hometown, scenes of him bathing her and sleeping next to her

-however it's not all fun and games (Oda: of course this is Kuma's flashback, it has to be messed up to the max!) And we see Gyogyo and his friend (Bonney's two future subordinates) come to the church, and Kuma orders them to lock the door. They comply and close it but notice that he had also closed the windows completely shut with woodbplanks, they ask him why he did that and he tells them that it's because Bonney shouldn't be exposed to light (he shows them a small spot of crystalized scales on her face near her cheek where she will have her piercing in the future). He tells dragon and iva that he will quit being a revolutionary so he can take care of Bonney

-The kids bully Bonney and call her a vampire, she beats them and gives them the middle finger, and when she tried to get out Kuma stops her, fearing she might get exposed to sunlight. Instead he brings her books from all around the world to read.

-Kuma takes Bonney to so many other doctors, some of which mis-diagnosed her with the amber-lead disease (the same disease law had)

-a doctor diagnoses her with the sapphire scale disease and tells Kuma that even though she didn't get exposed to natural light, the illness will still kill her slowly and she won't make it pass 10 years old

-Bonney overhears them and Kuma lies to her that the doctor said she will be cured in ten years, he calls her Jewelry because of the small patch of sapphire scales that she has on her face

-the two of them start dancing. Kuma asks Bonney where would she like to go and she tells him that she dreams of travelling the world and going to skypia and drum island.

-News about the return of King Beckori to the throne, and the elderly people tell Kuma that the king wants to exterminate those who oppose him, Kuma is shocked by the news, and the chapter ends.

Okay, overall impression of the chapter:

I am at a loss of words... I am appallled I'm... I'm...

and to think that we're not done and we still have more!!!!! KUMA WILL STILL SUFFER MORE AND MORE AND EVEN MORE!

but for now, I want to clear the air with some cute panels, if we gone remember Kuma, might as well remember him for the big softie he is:

I found it rather ironic how Azusa’s scenario features him buying band-aids and new shoes for the MC after her current pair gives her blisters because I’m pretty sure there’s a scenario in his MB route where he forces Yui to wear tiny shoes because he wants to see her in pain lol. I suppose that’s what you’d call ‘character growth’? :p

You enter Ruki’s room.

“You’re finally here. We have to leave any second now. How strange for you to be tardy when you were the one who invited me along. I was just about to come to your room to call you. ...Hm? Your cheeks are flushed. Do you have a fever, perhaps?”

You insist that you’re fine. 

“No fever, huh? Then let me rephrase my question. ...What exactly were you doing in your room, staying there up until the very last second?”

You avert your gaze.

You tell him it has gotten a lot better.

the scene where fabiola tries relating to revy gives me internal chills, especially when she states that she got beat black and blue by her mother for stealing a cd. revy thinks of it as abuse, but fabiola sees it as out of love. fabiola realizes they have pretty similar backgrounds, but revy hates people trying to relate to her and has envy for people in loving families, perceived or otherwise. it retraumatizes her and makes her isolate and build a mental wall between her and other people because she fears relating to anyone on an emotional level and sees getting close to others as an opportunity to be disappointed.

fabiola also mentions this as why she idealizes rock as innocent when he’s much more corrupt than she wants to believe. she wants to be saved but feels trapped, and compensates by saving (or at least trying to save) the person she perceives as a hero (in this case rock) in her own dysfunctional way (trying to shield him from the evils of their life in roanapur, and generally trying to (unsuccessfully) preserve his innocence). he was her beacon of light in a time where she was/is disillusioned. she might try hiding via criticizing rock’s recklessness and habit of jumping headfirst into things but she deep down idealizes him to an unhealthy extent.

ultimately both fabiola and revy come from dysfunctional backgrounds which cloud their worldview and ability to communicate and relate to each other and leads to more mental barriers between them

i smell like smoke from electrical fires — a year-end, happy-birthday-to-me mix.

I used to always make a mix tape or mix CD or playlist for the end of the year/my birthday. The mixes were always a combination of songs I listened to a lot that year, songs that summed up my year in some way, and then a few that I just felt like hearing at the time I was making the mix. I started doing it at around age 12, and continued the tradition until I was about 35. But that was the year 8tracks died for a while, and at the time I didn't have a way to make tapes, and also that was the year I started using Spotify, so I kinda just depended on Spotify wrapped to sum up my music-listening habits for the year. Well, since I no longer use Spotify, and since I do have a way to make tapes, I decided to get back into the habit.

-what common/uncommon fear do they have? tbh, there's not much that scares Dhes. when he was younger, he feared rejection, but that fear has lessened significantly as he's gotten older & become more comfortable with himself

-do they have any pet peeves? he's pretty particular about housekeeping, so his biggest pet peeves tend to be related to that. but he especially hates when Kelly leaves his shoes lying around instead of putting them away (bc Dhes *always* trips over them lol)

-what are 3 items you can find in their bedroom? CDs (lots of CDs), a tamagotchi (he brings it to work. it never stays alive long), & notes that he & Kel wrote back & forth to each other during class throughout their teen years

-what do they notice first in a person? whether or not they look directly at him/look him in the eyes

-on a scale of 1-10, how high is their pain tolerance? probably 8 or 9

-do they go into fight or flight mode when under pressure? fight - Dhestyn's a fighter through & through

-do they come from a big family/are they a family person? his family is pretty average, size-wise. his family dynamic is very eccentric, so whether or not he's a "family person" is kind of a complicated answer. he's not particularly close with anyone in his immediate family, but he does talk to them & visit them often

-what animal represents them best? a dog - generally, he's very friendly & loyal, but in the right circumstances, he does tend to bite

-what is a smell that they dislike? burning meat

-have they broken any bones? if so, how? several, mostly his fingers & wrists though. he's broken them in skateboarding accidents, during fights with other kids when he was in middle/high school, & by simply making poor decisions due to his reckless nature :-)

-how would a stranger likely describe them? i actually kind of explained this on his character page, but to sum it up people tend to see Dhes as either very charming or very unsavory

-are they a night owl or a morning bird? both! Dhes has a horrific sleep schedule. he'll regularly stay up until 1-2am & he wakes up at 5 o'clock every morning. though if he had to choose one, he prefers mornings

-what is a flavor they hate and a flavor they love? he really likes cinnamon. he's not a big fan of seafood.

-do they have any hobbies? yes! skateboarding, hacky sack, making playlists & listening to music, working out (weights/jogging), fashion (read: "fashion"), & ruining his hair, to name a few.

-boom, surprise birthday party! how do they react to surprises? Dhestyn always appreciates a nice surprise

-do they like to wear jewelry? if so, what is their favorite piece? yes, the man loves to accessorize. his favorite piece of "jewelry" is actually a necklace Kel gave to him when they were fifteen - it's a simple black cord with one of Kel's old guitar picks on it.

Music Taste The RE Characters Give Me Vibes Of Part One:

Chris Redfield: When he was a teen, I feel like he was very much into Bowie, Journey, and other popular 80's pop stars. After Raccoon City, especially as he became more and more obsessive with fighting bioterrorism and giving up hope of living his life in peace, he rarely turned on the stereo unless one of his teammates wanted to listen to something. But every once in a while, he'll pop in one of his CDs and let himself drift back to a time when things were simpler.

Claire Redfield: She gives me the vibes of Blue October, P!NK, and Regina Spector mostly. Maybe some Alanis Morissette if she's in the mood. She fills in the void of silence every opportunity she has. She loves bopping along and singing to the songs, letting herself feel young and goofy.

Jill Valentine: She absolutely loves Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. I feel like she would also listen to KISS, Led Zeppelin, The Pretty Reckless, and Jem if she's in the mood. If she really loves the song she'll sing along and air guitar the solos that come up, otherwise she just bops along.

Leon S. Kennedy: He gives me the vibes that he doesn't listen to a specific artist but listens to love songs like the sap he is. Peggy Lee and The Fray are the two artists that pop up the most, but his two favorite songs are "I Can't Help Falling In Love" and "I Can't Smile Without You".

Sherry Birkin: Name a 90's pop artist or boy band. Seriously. Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Mariah Carey, Madonna, NSYNC, if it's from her childhood she will listen to it on repeat. It brings her back to a time when her parents would indulge her and get her the newest cassette tapes and CDs. The few times they went out to the movies together as a family. When things were good. She had so little control over her life, you can pry her music from her lifeless corpse.

Albert Wesker: Now he does give me the vibes that he will tell everyone that he only listens to classical music and orchestra, the real music, and tout the superiority of it. It's what he grew up listening to under the watchful eyes of the Umbrella scientists, raised in Project W, never knowing he was a human lab rat. But in reality, he found it to be very boring. He wasn't exactly a fan of the music his niece Sherry so dearly loved, but he did love the music his comrade William Birkin introduced him to. The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Eagles, The Who, and the Bee Gees were all bands that his guardians detested, but Wesker felt something flicker in his chest when he listened to them. Can't be nostalgia as he never listened to them. Was it longing? A sense of wonder? Regardless, those were feelings he long suppressed when he rose from the dead, and truly became the monster Spencer wanted him to be.

William Birkin: Well, a lot of it is listed above in Wesker's category. William loved all kinds of music from the 70s. Rock & Roll, Disco, it didn't matter to him. It was all so lively and invigorating. Something that he greatly missed out on as he doubled down on his studies and his goal of becoming the youngest, most successful biologist and virologist of his time. Something that he was narrowly bested by Wesker.

No art today, but I've really been thinking about the rkn's characterization as of late.

They're honestly the antithesis of each other; their character traits clash and clash hard but I feel like that makes for a very nice sibling dynamic they have with each other. I also like to hc that their differing personalities was an intentional design choice by Wily.

I'll explain what I mean, just know that I'm not great at articulating my thoughts and this is more of a stream of consciousness than anything else. So! With that in mind:

Enker--Based on his CD data, we know that he's very dedicated to destroying Mega Man, and takes it very seriously; he's a hard-ass with a gloomy personality. Hell, if you know anything about Enka music in general you'd know he's pretty much a physical representation of the music's soulful but sad melodies.

He is so dedicated to his programming that he would rather put himself in harm's way (i.e. sustaining damage to use the Barrier Spear) if that meant he could destroy Mega Man. He is an agent of order dedicated solely to completing his tasks.

So, when said agent of order failed at his one and only task, it makes sense for Wily to overcorrect. Why not design a robot to be the complete opposite of Enker?

That's when Punk was created.

Punk--He's loud. He's brash. He's hates PTAs and the government. Ya gotta love him.

Anyways, he couldn't be farther removed from Enker. While Enker is stated not to stand out, Punk loves showing out, represented by his love of accessories. While Enker would prefer to uphold the status quo, Punk wants to shake it up and have fun doing it.

His personality is heavily based on his namesake, Punk music, which has its roots in anti-facism and rebellion against "the man." It fucking rocks. This is heavily contrasted by the melancholic, "refined," Enka music. Y'see where I'm getting at?

I find it interesting that Punk's entire existence is a paradox considering I'd imagine he has disdain for any kind of authority, Wily included, but must follow Wily's orders anyways. But that's a text post for another day.

Back to the main point, even his fighting style is contrasted by Enker's. Enker's has a level of elegance to it, while Punk just throws his entire body at you. However, this doesn't mean Punk is reckless. In fact, this attack is pretty safe considering he can't be damaged while in his ball form. This is contrasted by Enker's extremely unsafe, even reckless, method of attack, that requires him to sustain damage.

But even Punk, the agent of chaos, wasn't enough to stop Mega Man.

You probably noticed that I haven't touched on Ballade yet. And that's because he doesn't really have any contrasting traits compared to his brothers. Wily must've realized he swung too far in both directions with Enker and Punk, so he made Ballade as a nice middle ground between the two.

Ballade--doesn't really stand for much except fighting. He wants to fight a strong opponent, and views himself as the "strongest" robot, and because of this he can come across as single minded. He feels too standard, too plain.

But his complexities are revealed once he is beaten and realizes what he is fighting for is wrong. He respects Mega Man's power, something that neither Enker nor Punk did.

Maybe the reason why he was able to break Wily's programming was because he didn't stand for much, able to break his base instincts because of his "weak will."

Or maybe because his will was so strong was the reason he broke his programming. Was he, perhaps, tired of fighting for Wily, and saw self-destruction as the only way out? I haven't decided myself.

Whatever the case, in his dying moments he was able to stand for something: ending up on the right side of history by helping Mega Man.

So sorry if this was a rambling, confused read! I've got that RKN autism, lmao. Btw, I really wanted to dissect Quint some too since I consider him their adopted brother, but it was getting way too long. A text post for another time! :)

just back to the question about D potentially trying to manage the situation by himself, I used the word betray in addition to leave, but perhaps it wasn’t the right term.

I meant more the fact that he might try to drift off and detach from the Sakura group to ultimately protect them, like Y tried to do when he asked Misumi to cut links with him while the whole Hirata situation was happening or similarly when he tried to leave Nanahara and Sugimoto behind.

My question initiated from D’s reply to Kamiya in that conversation they have in the car.. the way he looks away at the window and his evasive reply seemed a little bit off, almost suspicious? even Kamya reacts to it, instead of changing the subject or initiating a joke.

So I remember the Kamiya muscled gorilla scene from the drama cd and it is actually played as a comedic moment. Doumeki may have hidden intentions but in that particular scene I think he was messing with Kamiya and letting him know he heard him talking shit. Kamiya brings out Doumeki’s teasing side and I love it lol. Kamiya’s reaction was more of a “oh shit he heard me” in that scene. But i am pretty sure we will see Doumeki do something self sacrificing but I want to take a deeper look at the difference between this yakuza conflict and what happened with Hirata. For this yakuza conflict, Doumeki is in danger but it is not specifically directed towards him for now. What I mean by that is if Doumeki were to leave the sakura group, he could potentially escape the danger because he is more of a secondary target and Tsunakawa is the primary target. Don’t get me wrong they do have a bone to pick with Doumeki for what happened with Nikki but that is not the focus right now. It wouldn’t really make much sense for him to go off to protect the sakura group when the sakura group overall is a target. I think he would be more likely to go off by himself because he treats himself as expendable for the protection of others. We see it in how he acted with Yashiro and Hirata and we saw it with Nikki. He is willing to become someone else’s shield and that is a problem. Narratively, it could be good for Yashiro to see that as just a part of Doumeki’s nature so Yashiro can see that Yashiro’s presence doesn’t endanger Doumeki, Doumeki endangers Doumeki. Nanahara was right to call Doumeki out for acting like he was the terminator because he was being reckless in that moment. Yashiro, on the other hand, knew he was Hirata’s target and saved the others by running off on his own. So while there are similarities, it is two different situations and Yashiro and Doumeki have different motivations.

First song/artist you remember liking: We were a pretty strict household in terms of music, so probably some kind of religious hymn of I'm being entirely honest. I was permitted whatever played on the Christian radio station. I think the first CD I ever got was Hilary Duff from a cousin!

Middle school anthem: Still not allowed much variety in music...but I had my very first crush on someone who's nickname was "Bumblebee" so when I found Bambi's - Bumblebee, I thought it was a sign.

Road Trip Must Have: Dragonstea din Tai. No explanation needed. If you can't handle me at my numa numa then you don't deserve me anywhere else on my music taste. Guilty Pleasure Artist: I second the opinion about nothing being "cringe", but there are a few considered so just because of the fan base around it being weird teenagers. Who cares. Teen years are for being really weird and finding out who you are so you can refine that weirdness blob into a fun personality. I got really into Vocaloid and honestly? A lot of it still hits. And (about to show my entire ass here) Homestuck music. (Gold Pilot 👍) If you know, you know and I don't have to explain myself. We have An Understanding. A song that makes you cry: Respite on the Spitalfields has hit different since the Ritual back in September. How I didn't get into an accident, I will NEVER know.

A song to yell to: Amon Amarth has slowly crept their way into my playlist and I'm very fond of screaming to any of their songs in my car before I put on my "Respectable and Closed Off Worksona"... I really like Heidrun and Shield Wall! So I was really happy to see those pop up in my shuffle game!
