howd you come up with your username? ik ceil is ur name🤔
ceilidh is absolutely not my real name ehehehe it's just a name i've always really liked!! i would never use my real name online that's like.....the gateway to a huge mistake
for the life of me i can't remember why i chose emphemeron for my ao3 handle tbh. but also whenever i title my fics, i go into that same fugue state. i think i originally wanted ephemeral (but it was taken) which turned into ephemeron which turned into emphemeron. it doesn't rly mean anything, i just like the way it sounds!!

OC Tag Game: Lucien Trevelyan
Thanks so much to @cassiaorsellio for the tag! Think I did something similar a little while ago but it's a joy to come back to those answers and flesh them out more, now I've had a chance to sit with the boy a bit longer. Tagging @maagisterpavus, @themildmahariel, @litchigaming, @mildlyupsetzebra, @fenrelmercar, @woundedsoul12 and @dancing--lights
Tumblr media
General
Name: Lucien Oscar Trevelyan
Alias: Ambassador Trevelyan, Inquisitor Trevelyan, Inquisitor First-Thaw, Luci (to Sera), Lucky (to Varric)
Gender: Trans man (he/him)
Age: 35
Spoken language: Fluent in Trade, Marcher and Orlesian, increasingly fluent in Tevene and Elvhen, with a smattering of Qunlat, Rivaini and Nevarran
Sexual orientation: Gay
Occupation: the White Divine's Ambassador to Tevinter. Formerly Inquisitor, and before the war he was a Circle mage/herbalist in Ostwick.
Favourite…
Colour: Deep blue, like the Waking Sea on a clear day. Before the Ostwick Circle windows were boarded up when he was around 14, he spent a lot of time staring out of them toward the horizon.
Entertainment: Bardic songs, epic poems, and dancing. During the preparations for the Winter Palace, Sera broke into one of Lucien's dance lessons and insisted on teaching him ‘proper dances’ as well, more along the lines of ceilidhs and peasant dances. It felt a bit odd dancing to songs about himself (which was half of Maryden’s repertoire at the time), but the delight at getting to spin his friends across the floor was enough to overcome the embarrassment.
(He also gets Dorian to teach him that silk scarf dance after Veilguard, much to Dorian and Bull's approval.)
Pastime: Dragon hunting. He doesn't talk about it much with people other than Bull, but if anyone brings it up, that's it - be ready for a half hour discussion at least. (Esha Mercar and Taash are delighted.)
He also does a lot of reading, mostly non-fiction. He and Dorian like to read ridiculous books and snark about them/do dramatic readings together over a bottle of wine. And on nights where Bull's had a particularly bad nightmare, Lucien will get him to rest his head in his lap and read aloud to him the way his tamassran used to when he was very, very young.
Food: Steak with a good, rich gravy. He's deeply southern in his appetites, though Dorian's expanding them bit by bit. Mattar paneer was a hit, as was monkfish and coconut curry (though he can't have it anywhere near as hot as Dorian prefers).
The one thing he really can't stand is apples. His diet for the first half of his pregnancy was basically limited to toast and apples, and now he can't eat them without being reminded of the constant nausea.
Drink: White wine, ideally a Ghislain. There's also an orange tea with cloves, ginger and cardamom that Dorian buys for him as a gift and accidentally gets him hooked on, and he loves curling up with Bull and a nice mug of cocoa with guimauves.
Have they…
Passed university: In the sense that he completed his Circle training to a point where he was able to start teaching beginner classes of his own, yes.
Had sex: Yes. He fooled around in his later years in the Circle and while on the run (he likes to joke that Circle mage robes are mostly a matter of convenience). He also had a FWB relationship with a friend in the Circle, though they were separated during the Ostwick annulment and Lucien never saw him again. Then there's Bull, and shortly after Veilguard the two begin a relationship with Dorian as well.
Had sex in public: Yes. Bull likes to make a game of seeing how quiet Lucien can be when they're in earshot of others. There's a certain corner of Halamshiral that Lucien can't look at without blushing now.
Got tattoos: Never.
Got piercings: I originally said never to this as well but I think maybe his nipples? He'd look really fucking good in full body jewellery, and Bull would have a great time playing with it.
Got scarred: Several across his face, chest, back and legs from dragon hunting, as well as a mess of Lichtenberg figures across his arm stump, neck, and torso from the Anchor. He's also got stretch marks left over from his pregnancy and a hysterectomy scar across his abdomen, but the existing scarring on his left side makes it harder to see there.
Had a broken heart: Not in the romantic sense, though Solas' betrayal hit him hard, as did his father’s death, and finding out what happened to the Tranquil in Redcliffe.
Are they…
A cuddler: Yes, absolutely. He was starving for physical touch when he and Bull first got together, and it became a big part of aftercare for them. He loves curling up in Bull’s lap, draping himself over Dorian, or sweeping Dora up and peppering her face and horns with kisses.
Scared easily: He’s fine with fights and stressful situations; things are easiest when all he has to do is focus on the next step in front of him. The fear creeps in around the edges when he’s not busy, as a crushing worry about what happens if he fails, or the worst should come to pass. But Bull’s good at spotting when he’s getting wrapped up in his head and gently bringing him back down to earth (or not so gently, if that’s what Lucien’s in the mood for).
Jealous easily: More than he expected to be, once Bull enters the picture. He’d always thought of himself as pretty laid back and as a Circle mage, it’s not like he was ever expecting to have a proper acknowledged relationship. But he surprised himself at how hot under the collar he got listening to Bull talk about redheads and sex with people in Haven (and listening to those other people gossiping as well). He’s a little worried about whether it’ll interfere with extending their relationship to Dorian, but he’s determined to make it work all the same.
Trustworthy: Yes. He’ll play the Game when he has to, but his word is his bond. One of the things he really struggled with during Trespasser was the spies in the Inquisition effectively making a liar of him - that had him furious.
Family
Siblings: Two brothers, one older (Maxwell), one younger (Damian). Maxwell was killed in a riding accident when he was ten, which initially left Lucien as their parents’ heir. Damian was hoping to join the Templars, which he'd pictured as a life of valiant service and adventure. Then one day Lucien lost his temper with a tutor and accidentally set his desk on fire. Damian's never quite forgiven him for (as he sees it) escaping to the Circle and leaving him with all this responsibility he never wanted. Lucien later becoming Inquisitor felt like insult added on to injury - not only did he skip out on the responsibilities, he got all the glory and adventure too.
Parents: Emeric and Isolde Trevelyan. Isolde is still alive and living in Ostwick with Damian and her mother-in-law/Lucien’s grandmother Arabella, helping Damian to run the estate. Emeric travelled to the Ostwick Circle on the day of the annulment to try and talk the Knight-Commander down. No one’s quite sure what happened after that, but when the dust settled, Emeric and most of his men were found dead along with a large number of templars and mages.
Damian blames Lucien for this too, though Lucien was busy fleeing through the tunnels under the Circle at the time and didn’t even find out his father was dead until weeks after the fact. They do eventually reconcile, but it takes a long time to get there. It’s one of the reasons Lucien nudges Dorian into reconciling with Halward; he still feels guilty for the death of his own father, and the way it effectively severed many of the family relationships that his time at the Circle had already made distant.
(I feel like I'm making Damian out to be kind of a prick? He just feels constantly overwhelmed, and really misses the days when he was the baby of the family running around freely with his brothers. He wanted a public role as little as Lucien did, and yet.)
Children: Dorothea ‘Dora’ Trevelyan (b. 9:45) is conceived at the Winter Palace. Up until that point, Bull and Lucien had both been extremely careful with contraception, but they both missed a few doses during the Exalted Council (Lucien figured it wasn't exactly going to matter, since he'd be dead soon enough). And then suddenly it's three months later and he can't keep any food down. Whoops?
Dora is one of the best-loved kids on the Continent. She's also the only biological child her fathers will ever have. Lucien threatened to castrate Bull during her birth and Bull, being the sweetheart he is, started helping him plan the best way to do it to try and take his mind off things (he didn't follow through, but Maker the thought was tempting in the moment). Afterwards, Lucien gets a hysterectomy to deal with the issue for good.
(He remains profoundly grateful to the Maker that qunari horns don’t start to come in until toddlerhood.)
Pets: There’s no shortage of cats in Skyhold, and after they move to Tevinter post-Veilguard, Dora insists on bringing her favourite with her. Mr Ruffles is a former stray with one eye and three legs. He spends most of his time lounging on silk cushions or being carried around by Dora. Dorian complains to everyone that ‘the horrid little beast’ is the bane of his life. Lucien makes sympathetic noises and offers tonics to try and combat his allergies. Bull just laughs, keeps a handkerchief on him, and occasionally asks why he saw Dorian sneaking the thing extra fish earlier.

random Rook prompt:
✨ joy ✨
Thank you so much!! 💜
I shall answer with another moodboard 😁
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(+Ember looks like a happy cat basking in the sun here so I'm including it lol)
Things that bring Ember joy
Dancing: Ember loves dancing – especially the fun, energetic, informal dances you’ll find at the Dock Town pubs or in the streets while the buskers play a jaunty tune. And 100% she’d always be game for a Ceilidh-style dance. 💃
Sparring + Hall of Valor Matches: All of the fun of combat, but voluntary and low stakes!  ⚔️
Community: This girl craves a sense of home and belonging. She loves catching shows at the Cobbled Swan or Lamplighter, walking the Dock Town markets, hanging out at the Shop, playing games and just yapping with friends. It warms her from the inside out. 🫂
The Companions: I know, I know, it’s cliché! But as seen in the point above: Ember gravitates toward community. She loves her friends so much! And we’ve already established she’s a ✨SAAAAP✨.  So, she absolutely perks up at the premise of going out for a walk with Davrin and Assan, playing rock-paper-scissors with Manfred, sharing coffee with Lucanis, sitting in on a brainstorming session between Emmrich and Bellara, training with Taash, exploring a new place with Harding, working a case with Neve, etc. She just enjoys being included in their lives 😭
+ Neve: Another cliché lol but I think Neve would honestly be surprised at how much she brightens Ember’s day 🥺

6 Week Challenge Reflection
What an absolutely crazy semester 😅 second years were right about the jump from first to second year, it was so intense and I was only doing 3 modules 😭 but this was my favourite semester of uni so far both academically and socially!!
Academic 🎓
Submit all Analysing Grammar assignments on time ✅
Bonus: achieve weighted mark of 25% / 30% ❌ - but I was really close with 23%!! That's still a very good score given how much I've struggled with this module
Complete all French grammar activities ✅
Record 15 self study activities by end of the semester ❌ - I did 6 activities in the duration of the challenge which makes 10 overall activities for the semester, tbf it's more activities than I'd done this time last year! I'm supposed to have 12 activities per semester so I'll have to do some work over Christmas but that's fine
Submit group work and quizzes for pragmatics on time ✅
Bonus: achieve weighted mark of 15% / 20% ✅ - I got 16% :D
Wellbeing 🌻
Get out of my comfort zone and attend events I wouldn't usually go to ✅ - absolutely!! This semester I've participated more actively in class and gone to events such as ceilidhs, folk music nights and singing events!! The scariest thing I've done is chairing a linguistics society event, which also makes it the thing I'm proudest of doing :)
Try and keep up with daily joys journal ✅ - ngl these posts kind of became my daily joys journal 😅 but at least I've been keeping up with staying grateful for the little moments!!
Go outside at least once a day ❌ - I missed a few days but I've generally gotten way better at leaving the house on the weekends!!
Hobbies 🍄
Finish two books ✅ - yep!! I finished Infamous by Lex Croucher and Chlorine by Jade Song, Infamous was mid but Chlorine was SO good :D yesterday I finished The Trading Game by Gary Stevenson at the airport and I'm almost done with Ace by Angela Chen as well :)
Learn the basics of Koine Greek ❌ - I simply didn't have time, but I intend to make a start over Christmas!!
Swim once a week when not on my period ❌ - I missed swimming in the last two weeks of the semester but tbh I'm proud of myself for going at all - some weeks I went swimming twice and I've made huge progress on my endurance and speed in the water!!
I'm so happy I decided to do this challenge and I might continue to write diary posts in my second semester, it's been a wonderful way to look back on memories :) but for now I'm going to enjoy my Christmas and not think about too many academic things!!

*deep breath* Saw your request for comfort hcs and! Well. I don’t think this counts as a hc BUT I offer you this crackish/wedding/music thing 🫶🏼
Nearly the entire base turning up to Soap and Ghost’s wedding reception + all their international friends + any family members you wanna throw into the mix. Soap did not care about a single detail other than 1. Ending the night married to the man he loves and 2. (Arguably more important than 1) Getting a ceilidh band.
Needless to say A Good Time ensues. They’ve got a fantastic caller, rowdy soldiers swinging each other around under the stars, Simon with curls falling free from the gel sweaty and messy from dancing. Simon Riley. Grinning arm in arm with his husband. And at some point Soap, absolutely blootered, conspiring with the band to let him belt out Life With You by the Proclaimers.
And god, Simon’s husband is embarrassing, and there’s white cake icing on his kilt right over his crotch that looks just like—
But Simon hadn’t cared about any of the details other than 1. Ending the night married to the man he loves and 2. Putting his own discomfort aside to properly participate in the big, loud wedding reception that his husband deserved. That they both deserved.
And he thinks they quite accomplished both of those things.
Tumblr media
Oh my god 🥹💞💞💞❤️💜💕
Are these tears?? Tears of joy?????? I'm so abnormal about this wedding scenario.
God fucking bless thank you so much, holy shit, something healed within me when I read and imagined all of that. I can't, they make me so sick. They're so cute and in absolute love and the little details about how Simon looks when he dances and how Soap's having the time of his life belting Life With You and how Ghost puts his discomfort aside to give Soap the wedding he wants.
I can't, I can't, I can't

It is fleeting but … could it be? — A laugh fell beneath her breath as eyes swept over the city. Children leaned over their parents’ shoulders, mouths parted in awe as each detail of Seelie’s fae shine under the sun’s light. Even windows are filled with curious faces, some waving with flirtations to who knows which of their guests. Most Kings savored the attention like a starved man offered the finest of feasts. Their chests puffed as they lavished in the love all those around showered.
— Not him.
“It suits you.”, she states with one hand freed from the reins. “— Smiling.”
Never in her life has she ever witnessed someone so out of their element. How he stared ahead as though it were some daunting task thrusted onto his desk. For a moment he seemed nothing more than just a young man rather than a king of a realm. Possibly wishing to be done with this meanwhile the gentry glowed with joy as compliments are thrown in their direction.
The thunder of drums grow louder. Bells ringing down as the road opened; central fountain flowing with a mist clouding over the water’s surface. Seven tiers carved from marble pristine with the tip securing ribbons across the courtyard in a colorful canopy. Hues of red and orange suit the goldening of leaves on trees. Aroma of cinnamon and clove high as the bakeries roared their ovens to ensure seasonal goods are prepared for the coming days. Even bar owners had begun rolling out their own family recipes of warming wines and spirits, ensuring not a soul will suffer from the evening chill during the festivities.
“Your gentry seemed to be enjoying themselves at least. Hard to say which one is soaking it up more.” A glimpse over her shoulder leaves her amused as she wondered what sort of reaction the poor king must’ve had over the news of Lord Mèinnearach’s invite. “Have they always been this way?”
@lunarxdaydream || Continuation
Tumblr media
The compliment caught Camhlaidh off guard, as evidenced from the brief flush of silver across his cheeks. He chuckled. “Please do  not tease me. It may ruin the image of the parade if one of the guests of honor is blushing like an innocent maiden.”
The scent of spices wafted in the air to accompany the riot of colors around him, the vivid nature of it all reminding him of his own home. Seelie did not have to experience seasons in cycles as the mortal plane and other realms did. In fact, it rarely did so in the past when governed by his father’s whims. Perhaps it was a product of his time spent in the mortal place, but Camhlaidh found himself enjoying the constant shift. ...Though the weather had been trending towards cooler as of late.
The question was a welcome reprieve to his thoughts, and he risked a quick look over his shoulder back to his gentry. Most of which were, of course, eating up the attention in various ways. At least Seòras, Ceilidh, and Lord Cairbre were more reserved.
“Yes,” he sighed, shifting his gaze to Ruaidhri, Eilidh, and Iomhar. Each looked as if they were planning to enjoy and conquer this new land in their own particular way. Maybe it would be best to have one final group conversation after they reached their lodgings. “We have all known each other since young and they have always been like that.”

tagged to rec five of my own fics by @penny-anna, thank you <3
old ghost's waltz
Rolling his foot from side to side, Jamie bumped the edge of his shoe against her calf. “It’s like mendin’ somethin’, I think. Like your dress, there.” His toe traced around the corner of a patch. “It’s different fabric, ye know, but it’s – coverin’ up a hole, at least, even if the tear’s still there beneath it.” He huffed out a smile, his cheeks reddening so slightly she almost missed it. “That’s what I always thought, anyway.” There was something distant on his face, a glassiness in the way his eyes drifted up to the clouds above. And there was someone else on his mind. A ghost, sitting with him. Just as Alexander’s ghost sat with her, one hand in hers, dragging her down through the earth that had swallowed him. Jamie’s ghosts pulled him up, instead. Drawing him into the sky. The thought twisted a knife into her chest, somehow. Kirsty MacLaren has never believed in ghosts, or spirits, or men from other worlds. But they sit with her regardless, after the deaths of her father and brother - and the ripples cast by one of them might just change her life.
this is my absolute favourite thing I've ever written, it is THE fic to me. my first time writing kirsty, my first time really actually properly getting into jamie backstory stuff/my post-war games jamie timeline. I do intend for it to be part of a trilogy someday, and also I want to write a proper post-war games longfic from jamie's pov, but if none of those things ever happen then I'll be happy just having written this.
unsorted
But that wasn’t the point, was it? The point had never been Eòghann, too busy with Sàra to laugh at a silly old joke with him. It stung, yes – but like the snow, he could brush it away easily enough, and still never dip into the yawning gap in his chest that lay beneath it. The first traces of watery light were creeping over the horizon, just where the line of the trees parted into fields. Sunrise would be many hours away yet, the deep blue of the night splitting into lighter colours – and here, caught between night and daybreak, he could almost believe nothing would ever change. If nothing ever changed, then nobody could grow up without him. He wouldn’t turn around and find all his friends sat at the back of the ceilidh-house – and he wouldn’t look down at himself and wonder if he had been left a child, watching them run on ahead. Over and over again, Jamie tries to understand himself.
another fic with a bunch of jamie backstory content, you can absolutely tell I love playing with that setting/those characters ajgkfd. but also this fic (or the thought of writing something like this fic) lived in my chest for probably 5 years before I finally plucked up the courage to write it. it's so so so personal to me and writing/posting it felt very soul-baring and the fact that people responded positively to it just fills me with indescribable joy
There is Music of the Birds in it (and Music of the Sídhe)
"I remember there was always music. Everywhere we went, the selkie songs echoed through the water and on the beaches, sometimes for days afterwards, like they'd been caught on the kelp and the stones." The people of the sea can seldom stay with those they love, but their songs always remain.
ohhh god this is six years old now. but this is also a fic with a very special place in my heart, even though it's old, and I think I'm a much better writer than I was back then. technically there is a third part to this series also!! & I swear to god one day I will write it. (I just need to get over my fear of writing longfics & also learn a whole other language so I can see the film that inspired it which is totally @ettelwenailinon's fault <333)
in the night i lie and look up at you (when the morning comes i watch you rise)
“Settle down,” he said, regretting it only after the words left his mouth. Suppose this was just the Doctor’s way of getting to sleep. But he froze at the sound of Jamie’s voice, eyes almost luminous beneath the angular shadows of the crumpled bedcovers. “I don’t bite or anythin’.” “I know you don’t bite,” the Doctor muttered. But a moment later he sighed, almost shrinking down into the mattress. “My people, ah – don’t make a habit of sleeping. And certainly not communally.” Jamie grinned again at that. “Mine do.” In the shadows, he caught a faint glimpse of the Doctor raising his eyebrows, his mouth tightening into a wry smile. “So I gathered.” Five times Jamie wondered why he woke up alone, and one time he knew.
this one was just. SO much fun to write, it was a real breakthrough moment in me writing a bunch of longer stuff which felt so good. and I think it came out really well!! there's just a bunch of little headcanons and bits and pieces scattered through the whole thing, it's like. this is the source code for how I write two/jamie in a way. also the first time I actually dared to tag a fic as ace two/jamie (and poke at it a little bit more in a fic) which again was super personal & nervewracking
a light in bitter dark (i think i'm ready to go)
Victoria might have liked to stay. It was hardly unreasonable, was it? All the others had, after all, and some of them had stayed in far worse places than this. But it simply hadn’t occurred to him that Victoria’s time might be approaching. Maybe he had grown complacent, really, so used to Jamie walking beside him and promising him forever. It ought to have been his turn to go, after all, now that Ben and Polly had found their way home. But Jamie stood so firm, and made that promise with so much steady confidence. And now the Doctor was starting to wonder whether there was a part of him, buried deep in his hearts, that believed it as much as Jamie seemed to. They all promised him forever, though. In their own ways. And a Time Lord, of all people, should know that no forever really endured. Five times the Doctor couldn't bring himself to say goodbye to Victoria, and one time he managed it.
of course I HAD to get a victoria fic in here ajgkdf. I tossed up a couple but in the end it came down to this one (ashamed to admit that it was in part because of the title. rip. it is one of my favourite titles I've ever used tho). I love love love love writing victoria angst and also lesbian victoria content and I got to do so much of that in this fic <33
the first three fics on this list were pretty obvious picks but I was tossing up between a few for the last two, so a couple honourable mentions:
The Falls
inkstains
somnium
should i have bent, been reshaped in your image
the love that you need will never be found at home
litany for a reunion
tagging @galacticlamps @hesgomorrah and anyone else who wants to do it!!!

Change and variety
This is a reminder of Kropotkin's important stress on impermanence, and his insistence on "an infinite variety of groups ... temporary or more or less permanent ... an ever-changing adjustment and 'readjustment of equilibrium". In the brass world we emphasise the continuity of tradition, in the folk world we love the way in which the mood and the venue change from pub to pub. I see, where I live in Suffolk, how as the venue changes, performers, some of them old friends, others complete strangers, adjust to the mood, the audience and the acoustics, and play along together, sometimes accompanying a singer none of them have met before, exchanging through gestures and eye-signals information about key and tempo, chords and harmony. It is exactly the same automatic reciprocity that you notice between the members of a string quartet, with the significant difference that people like the Amadeus had played together for forty years.
When the whole variegated patchwork of the folkweave pattern comes together, as in the Folk-on-the-Green Festival in Stony Stratford, they provide, as Ruth Finnegan comments, "a magnificent showpiece of local talent" bringing in other streams like Ceilidh bands to dance to, or the Morris-dancing groups. As one adherent told her, "by playing with other people you get another dimension to performance".
Then she moves to the world of music theatre, meaning opera, the Gilbert and Sullivan light operas, musical plays — not so much 'Oklahoma' or 'West Side Story' as local groups could never afford the copyright fees involved, but old favourites and, for example, the series of musical plays based on local history which emerged on the Stantonbury Campus, one of which I have actually seen. It also covers the pantomimes put on at Christmas by every kind of group from schools to Women's Institutes.
If your measure of the importance of music in human society is the sheer number of people involved in the actual production, music theatre must be the winner. Among performers it brings together both singers and actors, and it also calls for the utmost skill in scene designers, lighting electricians, painters and stage-hands, costume makers, and an enormous number of citizens involved in getting people to rehearsals, feeding and bedding them, booking halls, producing programmes, drumming up the audience and selling tickets. Many such ventures were conducted to raise funds for local causes, and Ruth Finnegan is eloquent about the meaning for the participants:
... local soloists flourished and even the less skilled chorus and small-part singers expanded, steeped in music for hours on end, attending constant rehearsals, studying their parts in every odd moment they could snatch from work or family — small wonder that one concluded 'I ate, slept and dreamt music'. Some members had before had relatively little systematic musical experience, and for them such experience would be a revelation — as for the local plumber unable to read notated music who talked and talked of the joy of singing in operas and pantomimes and his discovery of the beauties of listening to music. For their regular audiences too, the public performances were not only grand occasions of theatrical display, marked by colour, movement, dance and dramatic as well as musical expression, but also an opportunity to hear well-known tunes and arrangements which even after the end of that year's performance could remain in the memory to evoke that special experience and lay the foundation for looking forward to next year's production."

The lively music and spirited dances make ceilidhs perfect for weddings, birthdays, and corporate events. Choosing the right Bristol ceilidh band can transform your celebration into an unforgettable experience. This article will guide you through the benefits of hiring a ceilidh band, highlight the best bands in Bristol, and explain why these bands are the top choice for your event.
Tumblr media
The Magic of Ceilidh Bands
A Bristol ceilidh band offers more than just music; they bring a sense of community and fun to any gathering. Ceilidh music, deeply rooted in Scottish and Irish traditions, combines lively tunes with simple, easy-to-follow dance steps. Whether your guests are seasoned dancers or complete beginners, everyone can join in the fun. The infectious rhythms and enthusiastic atmosphere created by a ceilidh band encourage participation, laughter, and lasting memories.
Benefits of Hiring a Ceilidh Band
Inclusive Entertainment: Ceilidh dancing is designed to be inclusive. The dances are taught on the spot by a caller, ensuring that all guests, regardless of their dance experience, can participate and enjoy the music. This makes ceilidhs ideal for events with diverse groups of people.
Unique Experience: A ceilidh band provides a unique entertainment option that stands out from typical DJs or live bands. The traditional music and communal dances offer a refreshing change of pace and create a memorable experience for your guests.
Interactive Fun: The interactive nature of ceilidh dances fosters interaction and connection among guests. It’s a great way to break the ice and encourage socializing, especially at events where guests may not know each other well.

Choosing the Right Band
When selecting a Bristol ceilidh band for your event, consider the following factors:
Experience: Look for a band with a proven track record of successful performances at similar events. Experienced bands are more likely to handle any situation smoothly and ensure a great experience for your guests.
Repertoire: Ensure that the band’s repertoire includes a variety of tunes and dances that cater to different tastes and preferences. A good mix of traditional and contemporary songs can keep the energy high throughout the event.
Reviews and Testimonials: Read reviews and testimonials from previous clients to gauge the band’s reliability and performance quality. Positive feedback is a good indicator of a band’s ability to meet and exceed expectations.

The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen
Mary Webb
When I was a lad, a tiny wee lad My mither said tae me Come see the Northern Lights my child They’re bright as they can be She called them the heavenly dancers Merry dancers in the sky I’ll never forget, that wonderful sight They made the heavens bright
The northern lights of old Aberdeen Mean home sweet home tae me The northern lights of Aberdeen Are what I long tae see I’ve been a wanderer all o my life Any many a sight I’ve seen God speed the day when l’m on my way To my home in Aberdeen
I’ve wandered in mony far-aff lands And traivelled mony a mile I’ve missed the folk I’ve cherished most The joy o a friendly smile It warms up the hairt o a wand’rer The clasp of a welcomin hand Tae greet me when, I return Hame tae my native land
The northern lights of old Aberdeen Mean home sweet home tae me The northern lights of Aberdeen Are what I long tae see I’ve been a wanderer all o my life Any monys the sight I’ve seen God speed the day when l’m on my way To my home in Aberdeen

Here, sung by the Alexander Brothers - theirs is the version I grew up with. But the renditions I remember best are those from the ceilidhs held in the Sonachan Hotel, on Ardnamurchan, back in the 70's.
