#TBT to meeting design legend Cey Adams. In 1983, Cey designed the graffiti lettering that spelled out Beastie Boys on the cover of their 12” single for Cooky Puss. He also designed various merchandise & the Hello Nasty album cover. He has an impressive history working as Creative Director at Def Jams Recordings & has also worked with a lot of legendary 80s hip hop groups 🎤 Very nice, talented person. It was a pleasure meeting him & chatting when he had his art opening in Austin in 2021

A-T-3 130 Beastie Boys - Cooky Puss
Cooky Puss is an odd record but, what is even odder is, it fits quite comfortably with no wave bands, the output of labels like 99 Records, or an act like an ESG. The record was played by DJs downtown and uptown. Beastie Boys at the time were Adam Yauch, Michael Diamond, Adam Horovitz, and Kate Schellenbach, they are clearly in their late teens and it doesn't take too much imagination to see how the Manhattan new wave scene and its celebration of youthful creativity would embrace a rough and ready act like theirs
The Cooky Puss EP was Beastie Boys second record, as well as getting play, it is important for a few other reasons
Something that hardly ever gets mentioned is Cey Adams did the Beastie Boys logo on the sleeve. Adams began as a graffiti writer, he appeared in Style Wars, and would become the founding creative director for Def Jam Records. He was dubbed the 'unofficial 4th Beastie Boy' due to the friendship he had with the band. Cey Adams is responsible for some of the most iconic logos in hip hop. The graf logo would have helped Cooky Puss get play uptown I would have thought. It's interesting reading about releases from this era there's a lot of talk of disguising the ethnicity of the artist, Madonna for instance, Sire tried to keep her appearance ambiguous for the first couple of releases. Beastie Boys would have been trying to show their love for graf and the culture rather than trying to appear black, I'm sure of it
Tumblr media
Something that is better reported is a segment from Beastie Revolution off the Cookie Puss EP was used on a British Airways advert without the band's permission. The Beastie Boys are all firmly middle-class, the sons of architects, playwrights, art dealers, and lawyered up. They won $40,000 from the court case which helped pay for a rehearsal space and instruments. The music was chosen for the British Airways ad by, future house DJ, Jeremy Healy of Haysi Fantayzee. Beastie Revolution is them having a crack at dub reggae, it's awful but, as being part of the hardcore punk scene they had supported Bad Brains who could switch between hardcore and reggae
The group wanted to put Cooky Puss into their live show which led them to being introduced to Rick Rubin, who they hired as their DJ. Rubin was founder of rock band Hose who had two releases on 99 Records (with pre-Russell Simmons DefJam labels) in 1982 and 83. Bringing Rick Rubin in leads to firing Kate from the band. Mike D and Ad Rock say they, along with Yauch, were in Danceteria with Rubin the night he meets Russell Simmonds to talk about It's Yours (which features Ad Rock's drum machine, thank you Jeremy Healy). It's Yours would become the first official Def Jam record (with the help of Partytime/Streetwize)
Across the The Beastie Boys various biographies (including the Spike Jonze produced product launch/keynote presentation for Apple) Run DMC's Sucker MC's is singled out as a turning point for them. Beastie Boys would become friends with Run DMC and tour with them. Darryl McDaniels wears a Beastie Boys tee on the grammy's hip hop 50 tribute. Beastie Boys didn't always fit with the narrative of hip hop history and they are often erased, but if you want to talk about hip hop on wax, Def Jam, and hip hop spreading around the world you have to talk about Beastie Boys
Beastie Boys live at The Kitchen arts space in 1983. The hip hop set starts 28 minutes

Album Cover Hall of Fame News Update and Link Summary for November, 2023
Here's the summary of everything I could find in the world about album cover art and the people that make it and promote it. Enjoy and please share with friends and family.
Posted sometime November 1, 2023 by Mike Goldstein, AlbumCoverHallofFame.com Hello to all – this month’s summary will be a brief one as I was out on a road trip most of the month and, therefore, have not been able to devote a lot of time to the gathering and sharing of album art/artist-related information. With that said, while I was gone, the work done by these talented individuals continued…

Andrew Perez and Adam Rawnsley at Rolling Stone:
THE CONSULTING FIRM led by Leonard Leo, the architect of the Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority, has worked for billionaire Charles Koch’s political advocacy network and a dark-money group that is currently arguing a Supreme Court case designed to preempt a wealth tax, according to documents obtained by Rolling Stone. The firm even worked to promote a book by Donald Trump cronies Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie. Leo has played a central role in shifting the high court and its decisions far to the right. As former President Donald Trump’s judicial adviser, Leo helped select three of the Supreme Court’s six conservative justices. He also leads a dark-money network that boosted their confirmations and helps determine what cases the justices hear and shape their rulings. The Supreme Court connection has paid off for Leo — big time. In 2021, he was gifted control of a $1.6 billion political advocacy slush fund. Over the past decade, Leo’s dark money network has plowed more than $100 million into his for-profit consulting firm, CRC Advisors.
Leo co-chairs the Federalist Society, the conservative lawyers network. He is also the chairman of CRC. Like many consulting firms, CRC does not publicly disclose its clients. However, several of the firm’s clients were named in resumes that applicants submitted to an online jobs bank hosted by the Conservative Partnership Institute, which accidentally left the files exposed online. One CRC employee’s 2024 resume says his clients include the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a dark-money group arguing a case before the Supreme Court this term that is designed to slam the door shut on a federal wealth tax. Experts say the case could upend the nation’s tax code.  “In the last Congress, legislation to establish a wealth tax was introduced in both the House and the Senate,” CEI wrote in its petition to the Supreme Court, adding that justices should act now to “head off a major constitutional clash down the line.” During oral arguments in December, Justice Samuel Alito presented a hypothetical where “somebody graduates from school and starts up a little business in his garage, and 20 years later, 30 years later, the person is a billionaire,” and asked whether the government “can Congress tax all of that.” According to the CRC employee’s 2024 resume, Leo’s firm has also worked for the Koch network’s political advocacy arm, Americans for Prosperity. AFP’s super PAC spent more than $40 million supporting former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s failed Republican primary campaign against Trump this election cycle. AFP’s charitable arm has supported a case at the Supreme Court this term pushing justices to block the government from influencing content moderation by social media platforms.
Rolling Stone exposes radical right-wing SCOTUS puppetmaster Leonard Leo's consulting firm CRC Advisors, whose clients were leaked online.

Cain's Fable - au
Tumblr media
Thank you, @mabeljonesrock, for this idea. Wrote it while waiting for my doctor's appointment.
Alastor is Cain. The first murderer.
He killed Abel.
Got exiled, built a city, had a son. His star, Enoch.
Went to Hell when he died. Signed an agreement with Lucifer that once every hundred years, he could escape to the surface world for a year. Why? Because Lucifer and him were drunk and a deal was proposed.
After his father Adam and grandfather God chose Abel (and apparently this Seth) as the favorite son/grandson, all Alastor had was Uncle Lucifer.
Why the name Alastor? Well.. he shook the hand of a mediocre radio host with that same name who wanted more fame and money but didn't have the balls to obtain any himself. He just.. took his memories, name and face for a.. long "trial period" or spin if you prefer (slaughtering many in the New Orleans population of the 1930's, but that's not new. Last murder spree he committed was as a woman under the name Chloe -no last name given- in 1801.).
Anyways.. to today.
Alastor was listening to the battle plan, told by Uncle Lucifer to unleash a heavenly hell if he wanted, spoken through his microphone by Charlie. Why he let her borrow his things? He didn't know.
His microphone returned to him, ah the speech was over. Just in time too.
Adam and the Exorcists were descending. Many were stopped by his shield- truly pathetic really.
And then, what broke the barrier was Adam and - Abel, oh.. Oh this just got interesting!
"Adam! First man, next to die!" He was being genuine. "Oh, and you brought a friend!"
"Who the fuck are you?" Adam snapped, glaring at Alastor. Abel had the same expression. Ever daddy's favorite, gross.
"Sure you'd recognize me, Father, dear Brother?"
"C- Cain?" Oh, is itty bitty Abel shaking? Delightful!
"Oh, this'll be sweet!" Ah! So daddy did share something with Alastor after all.
Needless to say, Alastor got his ass kicked in a 2 v 1 (oh no, he had no trouble again Abel, again, but his dad? nope). Look, he had the chance to call his Uncle, but he was too focused on kicking Abel's ass for a second time and then getting the snot kicked out of him by his dad to bother focusing on that.
--
So, yeah. Now he was recovering in the newly built hotel, Rosie having just finished stitching and bandaging him up, deciding to stay and watch (this was news to her as well) as everyone trickled in.
"So, you're.." Charlie was hesitant to say anything. Alastor was her family, well technically. But that was neither here nor there.
"Cain, the first murderer." Alastor said, extending a hand and then regretting that action, his true name sounding.. it sounded strange on his lips.
Vaggie spoke up. "Seriously!? You are ROYALTY in heaven and-"
"Well, darling Vagatha - daddy and grandfather didn't think so." Alastor's red eye pierced into Vaggie's one eye. "They always liked Abel more. Abel this, Abel that. Why can't you be like Abel, Cain? Pfft! Acting like farming isn't integral to feeding people and those stupid sheep!"
He looked at the others, who were all just staring back at him with blank expressions - save for Uncle Lucifer, he was the only one with an understanding gaze.
"Kid. Cain." Began Lucifer, looking for words to say.
"If you are going to apologize, Uncle. Don't." Alastor glared at the man as he pushed forwards on the bed. "And it's Alastor. Alastor the Radio Demon! Cain, first born son of Adam, stain on his legacy of humainty - is dead!"
"Al, you're tearin' your stitches." Rosie sais gently.
"Hm." Alastor glared, settling back down, ignoring the burning from the wound.
"So.. Adam is you pops?" Angel asked, after a few moments, breaking the silence.
Alastor resisted the urge to tell Angel to read the fucking book, taking a break.
"Yes. I take it some of you are familiar with my son, Enoch?"
"You have a son, Mr. Alastor?" Niffty asked, scrambling up the bedsheet to sit beside him.
"Yes dear." Alastor smiled fondly. "My only son, up there." He looked at the ceiling, but everyone knew where he meant. "Where I can never go. I.." his breath hitched. "I miss him.. my sweet boy.."
Lucifer put a hand on his leg, Rosie put a hand on his shoulder, and when he bowed his head to cry, Niffty patted his tears away.
--
How they accomplished a Reunion Day? Alastor will never know.
He was getting his bandages changed by Rosie, the only one who he let near him in this state (he almost bit the hands off the royal doctor when he visited). The lecture from Charlie was worth the fear in the man's eyes.
"Al! They're here!" Charlie's voice came over the intercom in his room, excited.
After a nod from Rosie, it was show time. He pushed the red button to talk back. "Be right there, Charlotte."
They took the elevator to the second floor, because it's them, why not? And walked down the one flight of stairs, to see everyone was talking to a loved one. Apart from one man who stood off to the side, watching them with his hands clasped in front of him.
"Enoch?" Alastor asked, as he and Rosie walked down the last few steps. He felt Rosie let go of his arm and move a little bit off to the side, smoothing her dress skirt.
"Father?" Enoch looked at the man, taking in his appearance now - he'd heard about it from Uncle Abel, but this.. it was.. "Father!"
The man rushed at Alastor and hugged him, they all heard a popping noise from the thin demon, starting to cry.
"Enoch, my boy." Alastor hugged his son, careful of his claws as to not hurt his precious boy.
It was weird, for everyone. Seeing Alastor with any emotion apart from rage and vitrial. Off to the side, Rosie wiped her eyes with a handkerchief and waved her hat on her face to not ruin her mascara.
When the men broke apart, Enoch turned to look at Rosie, and then glanced at Alastor.
"Oh! Where are my manners? Son, let me introduce you to my dear friend." Alastor said as Rosie stopped fanning her face. "The most darling, dangerous, overlord in her pocket of the pentagram, Rosie."
Rosie gave a courtesy. "A pleasure. Simply a pleasure."
Enoch, being Alastor's son, wasn't immune to his large smile. "The pleasure is all mine, ma'am. Thank you, for looking after Father." He then loudly whispered, "head strong" as he pointed to Alastor.
Rosie laughed, "oh! You are adorable!" She hugged the young man, before letting go and grabbing his cheeks. "Simply adorable! Oh, I could eat you up!"
"R̸̤̘͆͠ó̸͎͊s̸̡̛̬ï̵̦̯͘é̶̢̼." Alastor said in warning, his antlers growing.
"Oh come now, Al. Ah was just kidding. You know I wouldn't hurt a fly." Rosie said, letting go of Enoch's face. "Especially not this cutie pie! Oh, he has your dimples!"
"Rosie.." Alastor tried to get her to stop.
"Father, when willl I expect an invitation to your wedding with this lovely lady?"
"Go to your room."
"No."
"Grandfather dammit, Enoch! Go to your room!"
Angel burst out into laughter. "Oh, oh my goodness!"
"Stay out of this, sonny. Or else I'll show you why I'm down here!"
This only everyone laugh harder, and even Alastor eventually caved to the laughter around him.

Parigi, agosto 2023.

A-T-4 156 So Def So Def So Def...
It's a Def Jam. It's 40-years since the first hip hop records from one of the genre's definitive labels Def Jam came out. The first two albums I bought as a kid were on Def Jam so the label holds a special place for me
Def Jam Recordings actually debuted as a label two years earlier. Before the hip hop records the label, which was being run out of Rick Rubin's NYU dorm, had released two punk rock records. The iconic hip hop track It's Yours was produced and put out by Rick Rubin before he meets manager and promoter Russell Simmons and they become business partners
Rick Rubin's friend Ed Bahlman encouraged him to out his own records independently and Bahlman's label 99 Records handled the distribution of the first two Def Jam releases. The first two Def Jam Recordings records are records by Rick Rubin's punk rock band Hose. The inaugural release carries the Def Jam Recordings logo that is still used today on the record label and its sleeve. The logo was designed by Rick Rubin who was studying art at NYU at the time. Because of Def Jam's significance to hip hop these releases are nearly always written out of the label's history but they have Def Jam catalogue numbers and a Def Jam Recordings postal address (Rick Rubin's dorm)
As well as being the year Rick Rubin released the first Def Jam record 1982 was the year the Beastie Boys put out their debut the "Polly Wog Stew EP". Like Rick Rubin's band Hose the Beastie Boys were punk rock. Adam Horovitz wasn't a Beastie Boy yet he was in another punk rock band The Young and the Useless. Both bands played the New York hardcore circuit sometimes opening for each other and they shared the same manager, Nick Cooper
Why is the early history of the Beastie Boys important to the Def Jam story?
In 1983 guitarist John Berry leaves the Beastie Boys. Horovitz, who was still a member of The Young and the Useless,  takes his place. DJ Anita Sarko is described by the NYT as a 'crucial bridge between the city's punk and disco scenes', this is certainly true for the Beastie Boys who would dance to the records she spun at Manhattan club Danceteria. One record was "Buffalo Gals" by Malcolm McLaren and the World's Famous Supreme Team which the Beastie Boys loved so much they decided to make a parody of sorts. This became the group's next release "Cooky Puss" and amazingly it became an underground club favorite
Why am I still on about the Beastie Boys?
Having a club hit meant playing that track at club appearances. "Cooky Puss" is unlike their earlier punk rock material to perform it the band decided they needed a DJ, like RUN DMC had. The Beastie Boys manager Nick Cooper contracted Rick Rubin to be the Beastie Boys' DJ who used the name DJ Double R
A television commercial made for British Airways uses a segment of "Cooky Puss" b-side "Beastie Revolution" without permission and the Beastie Boys and their manager, being the middle class children of art gallery owners, art dealers and collectors, and playwrights, sue British Airways for copyright infringement. The case is settled the out of court for $40,000. This gives them the financial freedom to concentrate on their music. With his share of the payout Adam Horovitz buys a Roland TR-808 drum machine
Adam Horovitz, Adam Yauch, and Michael Diamond begin spending a lot of time with Rick Rubin in his dorm. They share an appreciation of hip hop. Adam Horovitz is bringing round his 808. It's the beats Rick Rubin makes on Horovitz's 808 that convinces Russell Simmons to go into a partnership with him and provides the beats for many Def Jam Recording releases, including all of those featured on this page. With the success of "Cooky Puss" Rick Rubin convinces Horovitz, Yauch, and Diamond to ditch their drummer Kate Schellenbach and punk rock in favour of becoming three MC's and one DJ
The last thing I want to say about "Cooky Puss" is the Beastie Boys logo on the sleeve is made by Cey Adams who will become Def Jam's first art director
Boom Bap
Rick Rubin is deejaying for the Beastie Boys and creating beats on Adam Horovitz's TR 808 and he wants to make a credible hip hop record. This record would be "It's Yours"
"First I met Kool Moe Dee from the Treacherous Three, who were my favorite group. And I said, “Let’s make a record together. Let’s make a Treacherous Three record.” And he said, “We can’t really do that. We’re signed to Sugar Hill, but talk to Special K, another guy in the group, because he has a brother who can rap, and maybe he’d be good for you to do this with.” I didn’t know that there were contracts, I didn’t know anything. I had no experience whatsoever. I was just a fan. So I met with Special K, and Special K introduced me to his brother T La Rock, and he wrote the words." - Rick Rubin interview for Vulture in 2014
"It's Yours" isn't by T La Rock alone, it's T La Rock and legendary DJ, member of the member of Soulsonic Force, Jazzy Jay. But Jazzy Jay wasn't the first DJ considered for "It's Yours". T La Rock had a DJ named Louie Lou (who would co-produce later tracks like "Breakin Bells" with T La Rock.) According to his brother Special K and Louie had a falling out over the demo recording and Louie was out. Luckily Rick Rubin had a connect with Jazzy Jay and the rest is history
Jazzy Jay tells a different story he's pretty bitter about the record and Def Jam Recordings in general. He doesn't think he gets enough credit for his contribution or royalties. Jay Quan asks Jazzy Jay about making "It's Yours"
"[Jay Quan] Whose idea was it to use the Uncle Louie break in the [intro]? That “Da-na Da-na Na--?”
"[Jazzy Jay] It was mine. Every bit of scratching was done live--no takes or punch-ins or whatever. Everything other than the beat and the rap, I put in it. There’s so many tracks… The scratching on that is meticulous.
"Louie Lou had done a draft on a cassette… Rick gave him the beat and he did some scratches, but it wasn’t full orchestration like the way I did it, where you had scratches coming in and I’m complementing everything. He just had a couple of scratches going in and out and that was about it." - check out Jay Quan's interview with Jazzy Jay here
The beat on "It's Yours" was made by Rick Rubin on the aforementioned 808. Jazzy Jay claims it was him who taught Rubin to program the 808 and that he also did additional work on the beat for "It's Yours." On the record label Jazzy Jay gets a co-production credit just like Special K gets credit for writing the lyrics
Something there's no disagreement on is that the Beastie Boys were in the studio when the track was being recorded and were conscripted into providing the atmospheric crowd response on the chorus and on the Scratch Party Death Mix version
As I've said Rick Rubin didn't know Russell Simmons at this time. The record label Rick Rubin had used to distribute his first two Def Jam releases, 99 Records, was in a legal dispute with Sugar Hill Records in 1984 and struggling financially. So Rick Rubin approaches Streetwise to see if they will distribute the record. Streetwise is run by Arthur Baker who produced "Planet Rock" and "Looking For The Perfect Beat", Jazzy Jay was also involved with those records as a member of The Soulsonic Force. Streetwise like "It's Yours" so much they offer to release it on their subsidiary Partytime. "It's Yours" becomes a massive hit and gets a 2nd pressing, the difference between this and the first press is that this one has the Def Jam Recordings logo underneath the Partytime logo on the label. All subsequent 1984 represses also include the Def Jam logo. The picture sleeve for "It's Yours" features Rick Rubin's now legendary Def Jam tone arm (according to Stacy Gueraseva, the tone arm was created by "a girlfriend of Hose’s lead singer, Mike Espindle," working under Rick’s direction), there is a Def Jam catalogue number on it's spine, the Def Jam logo on the back and most importantly a postal address (still Rick Rubin's dorm)
When did T La Rock realise he's made a hit? He was working in a pharmacy and heard it on the radio
"There was a DJ named Tony Humphries who played it around noon when they’d do a master mix hour. So Humphries mixed in my song and it was so unexpected that I damn near lost it. Back then, you might hear Kurtis Blow or Run DMC occasionally on the radio but that was it. After the song was over, they said that it was the most requested song of the day!" - T La Rock interview with David Ma
