i don’t write for f&f. i just saw the first one today bcos the actual first time i watched it i remembered nothing. i was kind of inspired like brian was stuck in my head and he needed to go somewhere so i had to write him a little tidbit. i hope donnie loves it
i know brian is mostly a sub but i don’t feel like he acts like a sub in this post. sorry:/ i have a tendency to do that with my writing. hope his voice still makes sense anyway!
WARNINGS: established relationship, reader is mentioned to wear heels and a mini-skirt, accused of trying to make brian jealous and is lowkey true, no angst just a fun little smutty kind of argument.

“Don’t think I didn’t see you shakin’ your ass in front of the whole line—“ Brian’s storytelling is nothing short of greatly exaggerated, causing you to scoff in response. It’s hard to condemn him when he wears that grin so well. Your eyes follow as his finger points and gestures to make his point, as if he’s passing over that “whole line.”
“‘Shaking my ass’?” you question incredulously, sitting up in the passenger seat to adjust further facing him. “I was walking!” As if swaying your hips naturally is the same.
“Yeah, but you know,” he’s quick to interject, glancing between you and the road as his knuckles turn white against the steering wheel. “You’ve got those little, black, strappy heels I like- you’re wearing a mini-skirt- c’mon, what were they supposed to think?” The combative nature of the conversation only eggs you to rise to the occasion.
“There’s no chance in hell you think the fact I happened to be walking in front of guys means I was looking for attention.” Your hair whips around your forehead, the winds through the open windows forcing you to heighten your voice over it.
One single, clean look from Brian, blue eyes lingering in yours as he drawls, “You did with me.” that damned handsome curl to his lips, and you land against the seat. A huff of defeat leaves you like your argument deflated.
“That was different—“
“—No, no—“ Once again you have to shout over him.
“—That was different, Bri, and you know it—!”
“—You can’t fool me, baby, you did it because you like when I get like this.” A self satisfied gloat and an affirming nod from him is enough to make you wish you could pull his perfect hair out in retaliation.
Your pause of disbelief causes Brian to eye you again. It’s irritating to say the least how deeply he takes pleasure in it.
“You are so full of shit.” you mutter, shifting to swing your knees in the direction of your door, glaring out onto the landscape.
Taunting, and superior, Brian lets out two victorious laughs. “Ha, ha! I gotcha, baby, can’t hide nothin’ from me.” his pompous words pair with an emphasizing smack onto your bare thigh, and then a squeeze. When you strategically don’t play along, Brian ducks his head forward, fighting for a peek at your face turned away. “Aw, don’t be pissy, sweetheart, you’re only mad you got caught.”
That thrill in the pit of your stomach, mixed with the annoyance in your brain gets the better of you. You snap, “Shut up, Brian.”
“‘Shut up’—? Oh, okay, I get it. ‘Shut up.’ Makes sense.” That grip on your flesh hardens, and you give in order to direct your gaze to him. His expression hasn’t changed much, but his tone sure has. Tonguing the inside of his cheek as he nods nice and slow. “You’re so in for it when we get home.” It’s meaning sent straight down between your legs.

Y'all ever think about the first chapter of Gold Morning when Taylor realizes she threw away everything and cut ties and poured her soul into trying to stop the end of the world only for it to all be for nothing and her hometown is gone and her dad is probably dead and she gives up for the first time in the book? Like she's a person of nearly infinite determination and willpower, but it finally ran out after she realized it was all hopeless. And it's such a fitting method of attempted suicide too for someone who passively tried to kill herself via caping without even realizing she was doing so. She just floated out over the ocean at sunset, surrounded herself in a cocoon of bugs, and stayed there as her flight pack's fuel drained to the point of no return. She didn't say it outright, but she fully intended to die there.
And the whole time she couldn't bear to ask anyone for help or a hug. She said the only two people who would give a hug without further questions were her dad and Rachel who weren't available, and that's heartbreaking to me. She's been so focused on being composed and threatening and strong enough to not be fucked with that she can't bring herself to let down the mask, so she'll drown instead. And she's wrong, she's so so so wrong but she's such a bundle of paranoia and self loathing that she can't fathom her friends would accept her in her moment of weakness and give her a hug. But Lisa does.

I'm moving past the "now we were like lesbians" real quick because yes they're so gay but that's not the point of this post. Lisa gave her a hug immediately, she saw her friend hurting and wanted to comfort her, but I think it's important to note that Taylor's inability to ask for comfort and the fact that she didn't want to inconvenience her friends with her feelings led directly to her hurting Lisa so much more. When Lisa opened the door she was genuinely unsure if Taylor would come through or let herself die, she was forced to see her worst nightmare for a moment as everything she tried to stop happened. How much would that destroy her? She doesn't show it because she's just like Taylor with her emotion bottling, but I honestly think if Taylor hadn't come through that door Lisa would have second triggered.
Anyway I'm getting off topic even if I don't know what my topic is. Taylor being afraid of being a burden when she's emotional around her teammates happens a few more times through Gold Morning, Rachel accepts it obviously, Lisa hugs her, and Aisha tells her to stop apologizing because she's allowed to feel shit when the world is ending. Everyone (sorry Brian) is 100% ready to help her, but because Taylor has had every strong emotion she shared with Emma weaponized against her and has been taught to appear strong she just can't fucking comprehend it. Her friends would fucking follow her to the ends of the Earth and she's thinks so little of herself that she believes she wouldn't give her a hug. I'm repeating myself but fuck she's really kill herself before asking for a hug during the apocalypse. She's just completely incapable of believing people like her I want to throttle her and yell that she is loved but she would genuinely just somehow rationalize that as a lie. She's surrounded by friends and people she's saved and so many lives that she's touched yet she's completely alone in her head because she keeps them all like 20 feet away emotionally.

You can't conceptualize what's wrong, a combination of things weighing you down as you seek out comfort. BRIAN O'CONNER sits at his work-table, sketching concept designs for the tweaks he'd like Tej to make. He's not a very gifted artist, but he's got the general idea down, at least until you pad onto the scene. As quiet as you are, he's learned your tells, glancing at you after he speaks, "What's up, sweetheart?" he asks, a little curl to his lips at the sight of you rubbing the sleepiness from your eyes. You don't say anything, coming up to his side to fix your hands on his thigh, hoping to silently grab his attention while you wait for him to notice you. It takes him a second, but he does, gazing at you more deliberately this time. You exchange a look, and he adjusts in his seat to accommodate you while you invite yourself onto his lap.
You nestle in, tucking your head under his chin with a sigh. With an arm, he secures you, drawing you into him to get more comfortable himself, he inclines into you, curling his body around you as if you're his centerpiece. Gently, he bounces you on his leg, eyeing the tip of your nose. "S'the matter, bunny? Don't feel like talking?" You're unresponsive, you don't even look at him, and he strokes your back with his big hand. "I got it. Don't worry, I got it." Sweetly, he rubs his cheek on the top of your head, ending it with an affectionate kiss.

My headcanon has always been that Betsy's mother was French; this is undermined slightly by Excalibur v4, where her maiden name is revealed to be Hartwood, which sounds pretty English to me.
I think about Elizabeth Braddock (née Hartwood) a lot; she was chosen to be "genetically compatible" with James Braddock, so that she could give birth to good and heroic children. (Her first child was Jamie Braddock, so clearly that didn't work out so well.) We don't have any idea what this selection process was like, how much agency James had in falling in love with her or she with him. We also don't know anything about how much she knew of James's past.
She has extraordinarily few appearances, and all of them relate to Brian, and most of them relate to Brian's guilt over the fact that he was making out with a girl in his car while his parents were being murdered by his father's supercomputer. There's no information on how Betsy feels about her mother. There's no information on who Elizabeth really was, outside of her role as dutiful wife and mother.
I'm not mad at this exclusion; Betsy and Brian have enough going on without getting too into their mother's history. But I find it a really fun space to play in, to play with the idea of her living with her husband's secrets. Her husband exists at this weird space where he is on the cutting edge of technology, even while he is steeped in magic. What does it mean to stand outside both of those, to be human, but to be just outside it, so that it affects your life and your children's lives in ways you can't imagine?
I think I like her as French because it marks her as an outsider in a way that parallels the way she is outside magic and technology but also parallels how deeply enmeshed she is in all those things that she is outside. The histories of France and England are very much intertwined; to the English, France is an enemy or an ally, a great nation or a weak one, an economic partner or threat, depending on the time period, but it's always been very important.
I also like Elizabeth as French because if she isn't British, then Betsy and Brian are 0% British by blood. One way of saying that is that they are the children of immigrants, but I think that's a weaker and more boring reading; the framing I want to put on it is that the Braddocks are playing at being British, that they are trying to be like what they think old-money British aristocracy should be like. They are stereotypes of themselves whose entire history is lies, and, yes, they are representative of Britain itself.
In my dreams there's a gothic fantasy graphic novel (illustrated by Stephanie Hans) about the young French woman who comes to a foreign country to marry a brilliant inventor who is building something strange in his basement and who believes in other worlds and whose family no one will speak about. I love the idea of this incredibly unsettling world, with a first son who wants to drive too fast and has a strange gleam in his eye, and what it would have been like for the woman who was asked to navigate it her whole adult life. It would also be like a tragedy, with an end that was terrible but unalterable, where the eldest son grows up to be a supervillain and the invention in the basement does come alive and kill her.

I am having deep thoughts about Brian Kinney and Marty in the bathhouse scene in S1. Here’s Marty, short, balding, stocky, and hairy. Everything Brian is not. And yet, Brian treats him with respect. Compare this to Ted. Brian doesn’t shit on Ted because of who he is or what he looks like. He shits on Ted because he doesn’t have confidence in who he is. If Ted had said, “yeah I like opera and beige and ordering the same lunch at the diner every day, so the fuck what?” Brian would have left him alone. Marty clearly thinks highly of himself and Brian respects that.
I am certainly no Brian Kinney (the gender envy is so strong though). But I can be a Marty.
