Okay so this is actually part of a much longer (series of) post(s) detailing/speculating on what I'm calling 'Ruby's and Yang's Family Reckoning' in Volume 10 and beyond, but I thought it'd be fun to throw this up as it's own little thing for now:
I actually completely understand WHY some fans keep defending Tai as a 'good'/'not-actually-a-total-fuckup' parent.
Because the show/writers are actually pulling a long-game, subversive narrative rug-pull with Tai just like they did with Ozpin, Ironwood and Qrow.
Think about it; Tai is introduced early on in the story as the seemingly 'Good Dad'. And he certainly LOOKS that way on the surface, given his lack of typical 'shitty dad' traits he see so often in stories. He's even first mentioned alongside what SEEMS to be a typical 'Bad Mom' who left her kids in Raven.
Just like Ozpin, Qrow and Ironwood were introduced as similar 'good-guy' archetypes; the Wise Teacher, the Quirky Mentor and the Heroic Soldier.
All while planting NUMEROUS and evergrowing hints, clues and red flags in the margins, between the lines and just outside our audience field of view, all in preparation for when the story is ready to yank the proverbial rug out from under both the audience AND our heroines that the adults they've been trusting this whole time are actually MASSIVE screw-ups who have been making a mess of everything.
The hints to Ozpin's general shadiness, the clues to Qrow's self-destructive alcoholism and depression, the red-flags that Ironwood was actually on the fast-track to fascism, and all the indicators that Tai was actually a complete and total fuck-up of a dad.
The only difference with Tai is that the show hasn't decided to shine the light of narrative focus ON all of his numerous problems and fuckups and force our heroines to confront them like it already has with Ozpin and Qrow in Volume 6, and Ironwood in Volume 7.
At least, not YET.
And do you remember how we actually had plenty of people who MISSED all those hints, clues and red flags surrounding Ozpin, Qrow and Ironwood? Specifically people who were denying that those meant anything right up until the moment they DID mean something?
Yeah, I'm not actually surprised at all we're seeing the same thing with Taiyang.

I gave my maidenhood to this solemn stranger and sent him off to his war and his king and the woman who bore him his bastard, because I always did my duty.

ugh i cant stop thinking about the parallels and differences between Tamlin and Nesta. both ostracized from the inner circle for making bad/unlikeable/brash decisions, except one is abandoned because of his behavior and the other is forced to change hers without choice. tamlin's masquerade mask, nesta's death mask. both wracked with guilt but cant figure out how to change on their own. bad coping mechanisms. both saddled with power they dont know how to control that frightens the people around them. when she confronts him in the spring court and acts all threatening and talks about how he's a monster, only to later think to herself that she's no different. she doesn't believe he deserved feyres love, and she doesnt believe she herself deserves feyres love. neither of them really viewing themselves as a person. him being a musician and her being a dancer. i would KILL to see a scene where they combine their arts and realize it can be an outlet that helps them both grow and change and enjoy life. or just any more scenes with them interacting, i feel like they have a lot more in common than they think.

You know it's actually kinda funny
in a super unsettling way, how Katara's relationship with Pakku is (unintentionally?) paralleled by Azula's relationship with Iroh.
Clearly both men think there are roles that girls/women shouldn't be allowed to have, based on the behavior they exhibit and their, respectively, explicit and implicit mindsets.
It's also likely that both of them believe it their job to keep girls/women "in their place" and boys/men above them at all times, and will happily teach it to those who will listen to them (in Iroh's case, Zuko).

Charlie and Angel Dust as Opposites
Something I've noticed about Charlie and Angel Dust. They seem to be on almost the complete opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to sexual contact and and sexual things in general. Not like Alastor who isn't interested in any of it at all, Charlie doesn't dislike sexual things but the way she acts when she's touched or approached in any kind of sexual way is the opposite of Angel Dust.
Angel Dust says in episode 4 how he likes getting high and fucking strangers to forget his own trauma and pain. He's a flirt, he's cocky, he likes having sex when it's on his own terms and with people he likes even a bit. He wants to have sex with Husk which I think is pretty obvious. Angel is hypersexual as a result of his trauma, but I think he was a flirt before too, it's not all an act as he already told Husk, just the over the top bits.
Charlie on the other hand doesn't seem to mind seeing people fucking in the window, or singing about Angel's porn shows, and goes to the Studio to see "where the magic happens", even offers to fix their shitty porn scripts with something less... well... assault looking. On that topic I think Angel Dust might enjoy her scripts more given what he has to put up with in Valentino's scripts. Because when Angel showed her his number one film she seemed to have a real problem with how violent it seemed to be. I am actually curious what kind of porno Charlie would write, bet it'd be cute and more on the wholesome side, just like her.
Being in a sexual environment doesn't seem to be that much of an issue, she was seemingly pleasantly surprised by that hellhound('s boobs) and was okay with being at the Studio until she saw how badly Angel Dust was being treated on and off set. However at the BDSM club she seemed to be more put off, especially when the demons started paying attention to her, one touching her and the other trying to. Her guard was instantly up the moment they showed a sexual interest in her.
Valentino licked her arm and she was grossed out yes but she just said "No thank you." same as when that demon flashed her. The only time she pushed Valentino off was he got even closer and wanted to make her work for him too, he got way too close for her comfort. Which I think is too close with any for any of us when dealing with someone with obviously bad intentions.
Rejecting Valentino and being uncomfortable by him was a given, but in the BDSM club as Angel Dust said, no other activity requires more consent and they believe in bonds made through bondage. Seemingly the complete opposite of Valentino pushing himself and his wants onto others. Might be why Angel Dust enjoys going there, it's based on consent first. Even so when the demons there wanted to offer themselves to Charlie they also came a bit to close and she froze cause of how uncomfortable she was.
I don't think she's anti-kink, porn, sex or anything like that. But I do think she's not into things that require you to hurt your partner in any way, even if they ask for the purpose of their own kink. Charlie always gave me the idea of a very giving and gentle person when it comes to sexual activities. People have different tastes and maybe her's aren't the BDSM kind, or the more rough kind.
And she may or may not have an aversion to being touched? I don't know about that one but I noticed that when she initiates it's fine but when others try to do it she either freezes or cringes. Especially if the touch is in any way sexual. Now yes she does have a girlfriend and is of course wanting to be faithful to her so she's gonna reject other advances regardless but again it's never a firm "No." it's always a second of awkwardness or disgust and then a "No, thank you." as if she feels her rejection has to be polite.
Very possible that I'm reading way too much into this and she's just squeamish about people other then Vaggie flirting with her. Then again we haven't seen that either, we've seen them holding each other, hugging, calling each other by cute nicknames, reassuring each other, but we haven't seen them flirting with each other. I wanna see them kiss at least once.
On the other hand if Seviathan still being her toxic, abusive ex is still canon and based on what Viv said about the Pilot it should be then it's possible that Charlie may have had some bad experiences too and that's why she's being careful when rejecting people and why she's uncomfortable with certain things.

I'm not sure if someone already talked about the parallels between Anthy and Hera here, but I'm going to do it anyway. So.. let's begin, shall we?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First off.. let's talk about the most obvious ones. Anthea is an epithet for the greek goddess. As you can see Anthy and Anthea are very close names. Hera is mostly known as a goddess of weddings and women, tying in with Anthy's Rose Bride role, but she's also the sister and wife of Zeus, a notorious playboy (or unfortunately in the most cases, a flat out rapist) which is a clear parallel to Akio.
Hera is infamous for being jealous of Zeus' various lovers and their children and inflicting curses and torture onto them, but rather instead of provoking Zeus for his behaviour, she is passing aggressively lashing out at him since she can't attack him directly because of his superior status. All of this sounds a lot like Anthy.
By the way here is one interesting fact you probably didn't know about: Dios is an alternate form of the name Zeus, which most people don't know was much more used in Antiquity than Zeus was.

You know the more I've thought about it, the fact that Charlie and Vaggie do a romantic reprise of 'More Than Anything' feels like a strong indicator not just that Chaggie will end up being framed as a thematic parallel/foil to Lilith and Lucifer, but also that Charlie is specifically meant to be the counterpart to Lilith; the (half)human woman who inspires Hell through song, and Vaggie the counterpart to Lucifer; the fallen angel who fell in love with her.

It’s really interesting to see the riders interact before they actually become riders and compare it with how they do after. For example, the twins and Astrid get along by hoping to get a scar out of dragon training, and it’s obvious that while Snotlout is obnoxious he’s still sort of respected in the group. And it’s just interesting because not only is it a specific iteration of the group that’s so different to how it is after, but also because of how they all must have been putting up fronts and acting differently, each trying to fit in and impress one another. Like Hiccup, but they rejected him because he was doing it too, just wrong. And they all didn’t want to be found out to be faking it, too.

It’s not that I don’t get why people think Anthony Lockwood is like Kaz Brekker, but can I ask you to consider THIS:
Nikolai Lanstov
Let’s look at the facts…..
1. Smiles all the time? Check. It’s a top detail for both
2. Lying Charmer? Check. Lockwood “lies like a politician”, lives with a guy for a year - that guy never learns what’s in the spare room. Nikolai keeps a whole-ass second identity a secret from a whole-ass country and is actually a politician.
3. *ahem* complicated relationship with parents and siblings? Check
4. Has a supernatural gift but the scariest thing about them is how well they read people and use them? Nikolai wins in the end because he gets what people will do. He uses his mind and that’s why the Darkling gives him the Demon treatment - to take that off the board. Lockwood digs at people and then smoothes it all away again depending on what he wants/needs. They play people for strategy, necessity, and sometimes for fun and that’s brilliant and terrifying
5. Somehow simultaneously has No Money and All the Money? Lockwood has a massive house in Central London, posh manners, signs of Family Money Tm -runs his business from home and has soooooo much mortgage. Nikolai is a king living in a palace - so broke he might legit lose a war because of the No Money
6. Absolute simps over their much more powerful wives? Hell yes and we’re here for it.
Lucy-Zoya parallels?
George-David parallels?
Holly-Genya?
If anything the Crows fit more with Flo……
Who’s with me?????
