First samurai themed spread, and first appearance of fake (?) tattoos.

Fun details: Luffy seems to be sitting on an upside down pot, Sanji has swirls on his kimono, and Zoro's swords have a shadow. This is the first spread where Nami's left arm is uncovered, the not-Arlong tattoo is clearly foreshadowing to when she gets her new tattoo.

Interesting coincidence that the skull kinda resembles Kin'emon, who debuts in chapter 656, and that there are exactly nine swords... hm...

Standing proud with ACHTUNG BABY at her side, Shizuka declares, “That’s why I have to be here now. So that this whole city can be free of you. So that Los Angeles and my mother can know a Golden Heart! A light for Justice!!”

With this, the girl inhales sharply, having nearly run out of breath. A moment passes by in silence. Suddenly, All-Kill releases a sigh. Standing straight, he attaches BLACK KEYS to the chains on his belt and starts spinning them in opposite directions.

“‘Free of me…?’” he mutters, seeming to think it over. “That’s some declaration. You think you can do it? By killing one evil, clingy man, you can shine a light in all the dark places of LA? Girl… do you even realize how much darkness that is?”

Shizuka grimaces. The man in black abruptly releases the chains and allows his KEYS to swing up, only to catch them in his palms to hold them between his thumbs and forefingers. 

“That being said… You have the right to judge me however you wish. But in spite of your delusions to the contrary, all humans, you and I included, are the same: lost children, all with the same desire for family, security and love. In those things, we find Hope. And anyone who threatens that Hope must be destroyed.” 

All-Kill raises the KEYS to his face. With his middle and ring fingers, he pushes his glasses off of his face so they rest on his forehead. Hanging behind him is the photograph of Sang-ok. “Even if that means stealing away the Hope of others.” 

Shizuka watches with trepidation. With his glasses pushed off his face, he turns the jagged points of the Keys at himself. She gasps softly, realizing what he’s about to do. 

“My love is selfish…” he mutters, right before plunging BLACK KEYS into his own eyes.

They pierce his eyeballs like boiled eggs with a slick, stomach churning squelch. He turns them both clockwise, then removes them. He looks at the shocked Shizuka without looking. His eyes are completely white and blind.

The man in black begins swinging his KEYS again with expert dexterity. “Let’s see what your ‘Golden Heart’ is actually good for…!”

But then immediately Usopp turns around to face a Fishman, right after learning they have ten times the strength of the average human. He’s used for laughs a lot but this is incredibly brave of him.

There are more examples later in the series, but I think this illustrates something important about Usopp. The stories and lies he tells himself - the Brave Warrior of the Sea and Hero Sogeking and Leader of 10,000 Men stuff - actually DO help. It’s not like he actually gets a power boost from it, but what it does do is it pushes him to try harder.

Usopp is fundamentally a regular guy. He’s not monstrously strong, he doesn’t have powers… He can’t live beyond the edge of common sense like Luffy and Zoro. But by telling himself these stories he can push himself past that edge for a moment. Usopp may be a regular guy, but beyond that edge of common sense is where regular guys become heroes, and the lies become real.

wha ch70’s message is so important to me… speaking up about your pain, talking about how you feel, and it being one of the most powerful things you can do not only to help yourself but to help others as well.

i went through a training programme recently that emphasized this very same thing, and i witnessed firsthand how being straight with your emotions can affect others, and how others being clear about their feelings can make things happen. it’s beautiful, the kind of event—the level of organization—you can accomplish by having been so open with one another. the light that pushes through in everyone’s eyes, the way hands and hearts move, instinctually, without much need for words. it’s not human language, but the language of humans.

i read the same thing in wha, and like master adalia (in my translation) at the end, i look at the three young witches whose personal creativity with magic have impacted people’s lives… and it really is a nostalgic feeling.

i love this manga a lot c: its messages about life, humanity, morality, even art is always so profound and never fails to belie a deep wisdom that really comes from key experience.

If someone asks Gojo is just living his days in a beach or something, am I in denial? Yes. For me jjk ended way back in chapter 70 everything after that is nonexistant

Now All-Kill freezes, the breath catching in his throat as Sang-ok’s face stares back at him.

“What’s wrong with you…?” he mutters, “What the hell do you think you’re doing…?” Shizuka, wearing Sang-ok’s face, swallows nervously and doesn’t reply. The Key in her chest remains in its last position.

“Answer me,” the man in black demands. “What do you hope to achieve by wearing that face? I offer you friendship, and you throw it back into my face…! Exploit my grief…? How dare you show me that face and act as though you’re the righteous one!”

With Sang-ok’s mouth, Shizuka says in her own voice, “I’m not doing this because I want to… I HAVE TO DO THIS!!”

A dramatic change comes over All-Kill. Seeing his surrogate son in the flesh, seeing his lips and eyes move as he speaks, even with the wrong voice. Something within him shakes. He sweats heavily. The image of the boy’s charred remains scattered over the roadside beyond his driveway recurs in his mind, like nails screeching down a chalkboard. 

Shizuka strains against his arm, trying to remove the Key from her chest. He strains right back to turn the Key to its final position. But he can’t escape the sight of Sang-ok’s face right in front of him. Each time he meets the single eye peering out from under loose black hair, he seems to sweat even heavier. His teeth clench and his face contorts, tortured.

Suddenly, a mighty explosion shakes the house from upstairs. Both combatants jump in fright and lose their balance. With this, the Key is dislodged from Shizuka’s chest. In a flurry of activity, they scramble away from each other. Shizuka drops her Sang-ok disguise immediately as she leaps backwards onto the sofa. For the third time, a standoff occurs. Both combatants exchange intense, hateful glares.

“I… didn’t come to this city for this…” Shizuka seethes. “I didn’t want anything to do with your family or your screwed up way of life…! I didn’t come to destroy anything!!” Hot tears roll down her face. “I JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHO I AM!!!

All-Kill catches his breath. His lips part, preparing to speak, but he clams up when Shizuka points at him violently. 

“You…! You guys…! The Congregation attacked me first! Me and the friends I never thought I would have! And when I finally endured through all of that, I… I found Mom, and I got to thinking we could be together… All of us, my new family… Kilo, Jerome, Mom… And Moya…” 

She pauses for a moment, a weak smile on her lips. But this quickly vanishes as her lips curl again. “But then you…! You and your clinginess, your greed… You call this a family, but all it really is is a collection! You collect people like toys and slot them into make-believe family positions! And for that, you killed my friends and so many innocent people! I can’t forgive that!!”
