The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the world's oceans, and the lowest elevation of the surface of the Earth's crust. Located in the western Pacific east of the Philippines and an average of approximately 200 kilometers east of the Mariana Islands. The trench is 11,033 metres fathoms deep & is formed by shifting of the Pacific Plate and the Mariana Plate.

60 years ago, January 23, 1960 US navy Lt Don Walsh and Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard, son of engineer/aeronaut Auguste Piccard, succeeded to dive to the Challenger Deep the deepest point on Earth’s seabed in the Mariana trench in the Pacific Ocean. After a 5 hours descent, their blimp-shaped bathyscaphe “Trieste” touched the ocean floor at a depth of  10911 meters but had a cracked window. It took 3 hours 15 minutes to ascent to the surface. Remarkably, Jacques Piccard had attached a Rolex dive watch, Deep Sea Special number 3, at the outside rails of the Bathyscaphe and this Rolex watch worked perfectly at all times. The Deep Sea Special was a special watch and Rolex only made six of these. The maritime adventure is described in the book “Seven Miles Down”. Challenger Deep is located in the southern end of the Mariana Trench - the deepest trench on Earth located in the Pacific Ocean south of Japan. . Named after the HMS Challenger (bottom right) of the British Navy that made the first recordings of the depth of the trench in the 1870’s, the Mariana islands are now under the jurisdiction of the United States and the trench is listed as one of its National Monuments. . The bathyscaphe Trieste made the first ever descent into the Challenger Deep in 1960, and in 2019, the deepest recorded manned descent was made by the DVS Limiting Factor (bottom left) into the Central Pool (middle of top panel). . Life forms have been found even at these depths of almost 11,000 meters, however, many have evolved not to have hard shells made of calcium carbonate due to its high solubility at extreme pressures. .
