Shaheen Bagh is an Idea, and Ideas are Bulletproof
Darab Farooqui wrote;
Have you seen streets raise their heads? Have you seen wounds break into a smile? Have you seen freedom wrapped in dupattas? Have you seen an eighty-year-old princess?
The lamp that lights the center of this storm, The radiant flame is Shaheen Bagh. If you want to see its insistence, come, see it. Not the Jama masjid, see this masjid of truth.
Warm your hands with the warmth of their hearts, Measure the heights of the mountain’s spirits. Where you will find no stain in the hem, The name of that cloth is Shaheen Bagh.
Come see Lakshmibai, see Razia Sultan, See a new India emerge from the hijab, Tearing the dark, hear the chorus of appeal. Hear the nation of women, transform, rise These women sacrificed their homes Their new dwelling is Shaheen Bagh.
Tumblr media
I read a pretty lit headline today morning while scrolling through my favorite newspaper, The Print. It read:
“Shaheen Bagh couldn’t get CAA revoked. But Gandhi’s satyagraha didn’t meet its goal either.”
But we all know that Gandhi’s satyagraha achieved something bigger, and so did Shaheen Bagh.
Tumblr media
Gandhi’s satyagraha became a tale of unity, defiance and the relentless pursuit of freedom. The rest is history as we know it. Similarly, Shaheen Bagh, a Muslim dominated neighborhood in South Delhi, became the face of India’s rebellion against the discriminatory and dictatorial laws, passed by arguably the most authoritarian establishment India has seen since the Congress government of the 1970s, led by Indira Gandhi. Leading the nationwide fight against the CAA-NRC-NPR legislations, the Shaheen Bagh protest overpowered the communal poison that has slowly been creeping its way into homes, workplaces, even friendships, and familiar relations.
Tumblr media
Muslim women led the rebellion. Sikh farmers came from Punjab to aid their “Muslim sisters”. Christians came out in support with their crosses and their Bibles, accusing the government of blatantly discriminating against Indian Muslims. Dalit participation was thriving, led by their charismatic chief, Chandrashekhar Azad, and believe it or not, a lot of Hindus stepped out of their homes to join the revolution that was Shaheen Bagh. Despite my description of the multi-religious protest site, my point is mere this;
Shaheen Bagh has no religion. It only has Indians, out to save their fellow Indians.
Tumblr media
In Hong Kong, initial protests against an anti-extradition bill turned into a large-scale violent rebellion against the puppet regime of China led by Carrie Lam. Similarly, Shaheen Bagh is no longer limited to CAA-NRC-NPR, it is about saving the constitution, and saving the largest democracy of the world. It is about Kashmir. It is about the detentions of Muslims and Dalits across the country. It is about calling out police brutality. It is about saving the idea of India.
The uniqueness of Shaheen Bagh comes from its unity in diversity, and its ability to push the dystopian truth into the minds of those who have some kind of conscience remaining. It is this unity that is intolerable to an establishment that thrives on division, hate, and fear. It cannot risk its people defying its strategy of “keep them stupid, silly”, and Shaheen Bagh, through art, music, books, speeches, and interactions, does exactly that.
Tumblr media
I shall be posting another blog with pictures of the variety of modes of rebellion at Shaheen Bagh, which won both the heart and the mind. One final note. A lot of you will be engaging in some kind of sadistic celebration today. You might even go on to make yourself look like a total psychopath when you tweet, “virus has triumphed over bacteria.” That demonstrates the success of this government in poisoning our minds, in convincing us that dissent is equivalent to treachery by labeling every dissenter with the infamous tag of ‘anti-national’. To you, I quote Tocqueville,
“A nation that asks nothing of government but the maintenance of order is already a slave in the depths of its heart; it is a slave of its well-being, ready for the man who will put it in chains.”
We are anti-establishment, not anti-India. Know the difference.

ED carries out countrywide raids against PFI, its chairman in money laundering case
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: The ED on Thursday raided at least 26 premises in nine states linked to the Popular Front of India (PFI) including those of its chairman OM Abdul Salam and Kerala state chief Nasarudheen Elamarom as part of a money laundering probe, official sources said. The searches are being conducted in Chennai, Tenkasi and Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Bengaluru, Darbhanga and Purnea (Bihar), Lucknow and Barabanki (Uttar Pradesh), Aurangabad in Maharashtra, Kolkata and Murshidabad (West Bengal), Jaipur, Shaheen Bagh area in Delhi and in Kochi, Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram districts of Kerala under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said. They added the action was aimed at collecting evidence in multiple money laundering cases that have been clubbed into one and are being probed against the PFI and those linked to it. The premises of Salam and Elamarom, also PFI’s national secretary, are also being covered apart from some other office bearers of the organisation, they said. The central probe agency is investigating PFI’s “financial links” on alleged charges of fuelling the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protests in the country, the Delhi riots that took place in February and few other instances. It had earlier recorded the statement of Salam, a senior assistant in the Kerala State Electricity Board, and a number of other PFI office bearers in Delhi. Salam has been posted at the regional audit office of the Kerala electricity board in Manjeri town of Malappuram. PFI and Salam called the raids a gimmick and an attempt to divert attention from the farmers’ issue. “Simultaneous raids were carried out by ED at the houses of Popular Front national leaders across the country. We believe this to be a politically motivated action from the part of the agency. Such raids usually happen in our country whenever the government in power comes under the pressure of popular anger and it wants to divert national attention from it.” “Modi government has always used national agencies against its political opponents and to crush dissent in the country to the point that the credibility of these agencies has come under question,” the organisation said in a statement. The central government has come under immense pressure following the farmers’ protests blockading Delhi and the ED raids are nothing but a “gimmick” to divert the issue, it said. It said authorities “intend to prevent the organisation from its fight against the anti-constitutional CAA-NRC, as it is a forerunner and stays a major force in the citizenship agitations across the country”. The PFI, formed in 2006 in Kerala and headquartered in Delhi, said its activities are “transparent” and out in the public and that they had nothing to hide. The ED, last month, had said it was investigating “financial links” between the PFI and Bhim Army in its money laundering case registered to investigate allegations of illegal funds being used to “fuel” the anti-CAA protests. “The ED is investigating financial links between PFI and Bhim Army on the basis of credible evidence recovered from senior PFI officials,” the agency had said in a tweet. The Bhim Army, led by its chief Chandrashekhar Azad, had told PTI that they were ready for all kinds of investigation. The agency is investigating the PFI under the PMLA since 2018. The ED had said that at least Rs 1.04 crore was deposited in several bank accounts linked to the organisation between December 4 last year and January 6 this year in various parts of the country. The sources had said a total amount of Rs 120 crore, credited to bank accounts linked to the PFI, are under the ED’s scanner. The sources had claimed that these dubious deposits were either made in cash or through the immediate payment service (IMPS) and a number of such instances were seen in Uttar Pradesh, where the maximum number of violent anti-CAA protests were reported to have taken place. Sources, quoting the ED findings, had said the withdrawal of money from the bank accounts linked to PFI and its related entities had a “direct correlation” with the violent demonstrations against the CAA. The ED had also sent a report in this connection to the Union Home Ministry. The agency had arrested former Delhi Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain in August and alleged that cash received by him was used to “fuel” anti-CAA protests and the Delhi riots. “The probe revealed that companies owned and controlled by Tahir Hussain and his relatives transferred huge amounts of money to dubious entities and entry operators which was returned by them in cash,” it had said. “The cash received by Tahir Hussain through entry operators was used to fuel the anti-CAA protests and Delhi riots,” the agency had said in a statement.

Indian officials raid Amnesty International’s regional office | India News
India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED), a authorities company that investigates monetary crimes, has performed raids on the regional workplace of Amnesty Worldwide in what activists declare are efforts to silence dissent.
Indian media reviews stated the raids on the premises of the rights watchdog in Bengaluru in southern Karnataka state started at 1:30pm (eight:30 GMT) on Thursday afternoon and had been ongoing.
Amnesty India’s financial institution accounts have been frozen by the Enforcement Directorate, successfully stopping our work. https://t.co/SnRDGo6q2m @AIIndia pic.twitter.com/ZIOflXOKkK
— Arijit Sen (@senarijit) October 26, 2018
A press release launched by ED stated its searches had been performed for alleged violation of international direct funding pointers by Amnesty India. The company accused the rights group of bypassing guidelines concerning international donations by “floating a business entity”.
Amnesty denied these accussations saying its construction is compliant with Indian legal guidelines.
“After a crackdown on quite a few NGOs, Enforcement Directorate hits at Amnesty. The 10 hour lengthy raid performed at our Bengaluru workplace ended at midnight,” Amnesty India stated in an announcement.
“Our employees absolutely cooperated with officers. We reiterate, our construction is compliant with Indian legal guidelines. ED raid on Amnesty India reveals a disturbing sample of the federal government silencing organisations that query energy.”
Over 5 ED officers raided Amnesty’s Bengaluru workplace. Ordered staff to not go away, shut their laptops and searched their desks. Staff weren’t allowed to make use of their telephones to name mates and households. #CrackdownOnAmnesty
— Amnesty India (@AIIndia) October 25, 2018
The motion in opposition to Amnesty got here inside weeks of comparable raids on the workplaces of Greenpeace India by the ED, which accused the charity of violating legal guidelines associated to international funds.
On Wednesday, Amnesty urged the Indian authorities to provoke “efficient, impartial and neutral investigation” into the October 21 deaths of seven civilians in a blast in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Amnesty India has campaigned in opposition to arbitrary detention of human rights activists and leaders of marginalised teams together with Dalit chief Chandrashekhar Azad in latest months.
Indian newspaper, The Hindu, in a report revealed in August, quoted federal officers saying they had been probing whether or not some entities based mostly within the UK infused funds into Amnesty’s India unit allegedly by business channels in violation of Indian legal guidelines.
Raghav Bahl, Greenpeace & now Amnesty Worldwide. Modi govt will use IT, ED & CBI to harass & hound everybody who criticises it. We now have by no means seen a extra brazen destruction & misuse of Establishments in India https://t.co/ldC50KI7T6
— Prashant Bhushan (@pbhushan1) 25 October 2018
Nikhil Dey at Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan, a peasant and employees’ organisation within the western state of Rajasthan, described the raids as “unhealthy indicators for Indian democracy”.
“There’s a sample to this. The federal government would not need any give attention to human rights points. Amnesty is a worldwide organisation of some reputation and these crucial voices are crucial,” Dey advised Al Jazeera, calling the ED motion “disturbing”.
“India prides itself on being the world’s largest democracy. So, scrutiny of its human rights report is essential, particularly with this authorities that’s overtly trying to muzzle civil society,” he added.
Concentrating on rights teams
Since assuming workplace in 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s authorities has turned the highlight on worldwide rights teams and charities, accusing some similar to Greenpeace of attempting to hamper nationwide initiatives on social and environmental grounds.
In 2015, the Modi authorities withdrew permission from Greenpeace to obtain international funding, saying the cash was used to dam industrial initiatives.
Lately, the Indian authorities has cancelled the registration of almost 9,000 teams for allegedly failing to declare particulars of abroad donations.
Activists warn the right-wing authorities’s efforts to silence criticism and dissent on the earth’s largest democracy are rising stronger forward of an impending basic election, due by Might subsequent 12 months.
“Why are companies allowed to herald every kind of international cash and even donate to political events, whereas organisations that assist the oppressed on this nation are being raided and attacked?” requested Dey.
