THE HARBINGER - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: XYZ Films
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  When her oldest friend is plagued by horrific nightmares from the beyond, Monique ventures out of quarantine to visit an old friend in New York to check in on her. On the first night of the visit, Monique learns that Mavis’ dreams are contagious. The orchestrator of these nightmares is the plague mask-wearing demon the Harbinger. This demon not only feeds on its victims’ souls, but can warp reality itself to remove any trace of his victim’s existence.
REVIEW: Andy Mitton’s THE HARBINGER is a contemporary tale that draws on realistic fears and weaves in supernatural themes to create an impressive independent fright filled feature film.
The story is not a “Nightmare on Elm Street” tale, but takes a more subtle approach like the 1977 film “The Haunting of Julia,” based on the novel by Peter Straub. The narrative nicely builds its foundation on flawed characters that also serves as a distraction as mechanisms of the demon. The plot does not offer easy answers and the viewer must make assumptions based on what is presented. In trying to add some gravitas to the demon’s story they introduce a demonologist. The character feels a tad weak, and feels a bit lighthearted in her first appearance, but achieves what it is supposed to. She appears in a video conference call with Monique and Mavis, and the story does an excellent job of utilizing technology and presenting the world and fears of the pandemic. There are some nice twists and turns. The demon has rules and the story lulls the viewer into a false sense of security. It’s an engaging tale that keeps the viewer on edge till the very end.
Actress Gabby Beans is Monique. The character is the lynchpin to the tale and her performance carries the film. She nicely conveys this flawed character that has an inner strength and intelligence that allows the viewer to believe she possesses what she needs to defeat the demon. Additionally, she channels a genuine sense of empathy so you believe that she cares about her friend and family. Mavis is played by actress Emily Davis, who recently appeared in the Hulu series, featuring Steve Carell, “The Patient.” She does a fine job of creating this sympathetic, stressed out, and haunted character that at first presents as crazy and builds on the viewer’s sympathy. The rest of the cast delivers strong performances that support the narrative and feel genuine in this dark fantastical tale.
Serving as the film’s director, writer, producer, editor, and composer, Andy Milton’s THE HARBINGER has solid production values. There is some beautiful cinematography. His cinematic choices keep the viewer off balance as he only adds subtle touches that keeps the viewer off balance. He is adept at creating creepy sequences and delivers some unexpected jump scares. His score is beautifully woven into the narrative and visuals so that enhances the tone of the film and lulls the viewer into the story.
The current state of technology, and the talented cast and crew, allows THE HARBINGER to feel like a smaller studio film. Still, it has a grittiness that is reminiscent of the classic independent genre films of the 70’s and 80’s. This is Andy Milton’s forth feature film. He wears several hats on this film and competently delivers an unnerving and engaging film.  The film is not an effects showcase, but a thought provoking piece with some chilling set pieces. It’s well worth a view, as are Milton’s previous films “The Witch in the Window” and “Yellow Brick Road.”
CAST: Gabby Beans, Emily Davis, Jay Dunn, Ray Anthony Thomas, Justin Walker, Stephanie Roth Haberle, and Laura Heisler. CREW: Director/Screenplay/Producer/Score/Editor - Andy Mitton; Producers - Jay Dunn & Richard W. King; Cinematographer - Ludovica Isidori; Production Designer - Xiyu Lin; Costume Designer - Candace Phelan; Visual Effects Artist - Justin Chandra. OFFICIAL:  n.a. FACEBOOK: n.a. TWITTER: twitter.com/HarbingerMovie TRAILER: https://youtu.be/A2I3u26glCU RELEASE DATE: In cinemas and on VOD December 1st, 2022
**Until we can all head back into the theaters our “COVID Reel Value” will be similar to how you rate a film on digital platforms - 👍 (Like), 👌 (It’s just okay),  or 👎 (Dislike)

the beauty of ardra 💧🌑
Tumblr media Tumblr media
💧margot robbie (ardra surya): upper photo
💧emilia clarke (ardra chandra): lower photo
🌑 the nakshatras of the nodes have a very distinctive appearance. the influence of the feminine rahu bestows ardra natives with the typical feminine features, such as delicate facial features, larger eyes, and a voluptuous body. the yin features of rahu gives natives a type of otherworldly and ethereal appearance, similar to that of saturn. this is because both planets are of the air element (for a better understanding of this go to my pushya nakshatra post). these natives typically have large and rounded eyes, dainty noses, and a lighter complexion (depending on the native’s ethnicity, i.e. if a rahuvian woman is of a darker complexion, she may have a slightly lighter complexion than her other non-rahuvian family members).
⭕️ let’s look at rahu’s most evolved state: the shatabisha nakshatra. this nakshatra is symbolized by the empty, yin circle. shatabisha is ruled by varuna, god of the rains, cosmic and terrestrial waters, sky and earth. in addition to the mystical healer, maya (illusion). the nature of shatabisha is also abundant in the other rahu-ruled vimshottari nakshatras (ardra and swati). this is because rahu is the utmost manifestation of the divine feminine. maya, being the embodiment of illusion, betows rahuvian individuals with the power of being an empty vessel for the divine collective; bending reality and transforming into the desires of others the native deems worthy. however, due to rahu’s rebellious nature, we see this powerful feminine force being steadfast and not easily influenced by others.

🌧 ardra is the first rahu-ruled nakshatra. in order to better understand the nature of ardra, we need to take a step back and understand the previous nakshatra—mrigashira. mrigashira was the rejection of the garden of ignorance and the freedom to move on. in ardra, we see the process of forming the rational mind and free will. due to the intellectual nature of rudra, we see ardra natives preferring to study, understand, and learn about the physical world/plane. this often leads to a fascination with the physical plane and understanding the workings of everything that peaks their interest. with the mercurial energy of gemini (knowledge) and rahuvian influence of the vimshottari system (materialism and illusion), we can see the reasoning of ardra’s prevelance in dystopian, horror, and sci-fi films. this nakshatra’s fixation on understanding the world and finding freedom is the perfect combination for creating films with dark subject matter. rudra’s intentionally destructive nature also provides ardra natives with a niche ability to accumulate knowledge to understand the workings of the world and destroy what seems to not be fit. precisely how rudra represents the emotional release and purification that occurs after the storms of the plane or mind cease (more on this later!). this is similar to most character development in many horror/sci-fi films and the ever present devil/savior trope. if you’re interested in further looking into this dichotomy, i recommend “the exorcist” starring linda blair (ardra chandra), “bedazzled” staring elizabeth hurley (ardra lagna), and “supernatural” starring mark pellegrino (ardra lagna). this trope is also perfectly illustrated by lana del rey’s (ardra surya) music. in her earlier albums, “born to die”, “paradise”, and “ultraviolence”, the singer describes her natural love of the darker things in life (i.e. drugs, violence, guns). as her albums progress, we see her slowly become more aware of the dangers of her lifestyle and her slowly moving towards love and kindness instead—much like rudra’s symbolism of calming after the tumultuous storms of life. i highly recommend listening to her music to gain an understanding of ardra’s themes!

🦮 ardra is heavily associated with animals. it is symbolized by the female dog yoni. this is indicative of ardra’s devotional, emotional, and knowledgeable nature. rudra is the ruler of this nakshatra. rudra desired to become “the lord of the animals”. this nakshatra also has the same animalistic dominion desire of uttara phalguni and revati. this is because the yonis of all three nakshatras are the female dog (ardra), female cow (uttara phalguni), and female elephant (revati). this may be indicative of the motherly, animalistic nature of all three nakshatras. this is also why all three nakshatras get along so well. the animalistic nature of ardra is why we see hundreds of ardra natives in animal prints, fur or leather, or animal symbolism via graphic tees or headbands; similar to the reoccurring cow print in uttara phalguni fashion!

💧vienna skye (ardra surya): upper photo
💧ariana grande (ardra surya): lower photo
🍀 another reoccuring style theme for ardra was the appreciation of 60s fashion, particularly the mod era of the 60s. time and time again, when doing my research for this post, i saw a multitude of ardra natives dress up/try to emulate 60s fashion. ardra natives such as ariana grande’s (ardra surya) 60s-inspired fashion in her most recent music videos (i.e. “34+35”) and chrissy tiegan’s (ardra lagna) multiple 60s themed events. i believe this behavior is due to rahu’s extreme prevalence in old hollywood and the 1960s’ modeling industry. for example, hedy lamarr (ardra lagna) was a prominent actress and inventor, jean shrimpton (swati surya) was an icon of swinging london and very popular model in the 60s, and pat cleveland (ardra surya) was a very well-known model who was the muse of every prominent fashion house in paris. i believe ardra natives try to emulate this era of fashion because of ardra’s appreciation of all things old and vintage, which appears to the nature of many of the rahuvian and ketuvian individuals. an additional thing to note is the prevalence of the color green in the ardra nakshatra. in hindu/vedic astrology, a particular type of color is dedicated to a certain nakshatra in which is lucky for the natives of the nakshatra to wear. green, being the color that symbolizes the fresh, succulent nature of rudra, is why the ardra natives shown above, vienna skye and ariana grande, are both wearing the color green. this also correlates to how many ardra natives have dyed their hair green shades or hues, i.e. gwen stefani (ardra chandra), nicole richie (ardra chandra), and rapper saweetie (ardra surya).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
💧kaya scodelario (ardra chandra): upper photo
💧emma mackey (ardra chandra): lower photo
🎸 all nodal nakshatras tend to have a propensity for darker elements and themes in the media. this can be reflected in ardra’s love for grungy, smoky makeup; darker clothing; and vampy, vintage hair and fashion looks (much like the magha nakshatra). this darker aesthetic was also heavily popular in the 90s/2000s. most notably, lizzy caplan (ardra surya), who played janis ian in “mean girls”, her character was well known for her liking of punk subculture, heavy eye makeup, and band merchandise, a trait that was also common with the characters played by ardra natives: kaya scodelario (ardra chandra) in “skins” and emma mackey (ardra chandra) in “sex education”. this behavior is prevalent in the ketu and rahu natives because it reflects the smoky and tamasic nature of both shadow planets. by rejecting the more popular, mainstream trends for the purpose of embracing more expressive and alternative movements (such as grunge, punk, rock, alternative, etc.). this why we see the nodal nakshatras so prominent in those subculture musical genres (i.e. ardra natives kurt cobain of “nirvana” and jimmy page of “led zeppelin”).
as always, i am open to any constructive criticism! i tried to touch on both the appearance, fashion and nature of ardra and i hope i did well! this post took me forever to make and i truly tried to put so much effort into it! i just adore ardra’s emotional, purposefully destructive, raw and feminine energy its natives tend to reflect 🌩 if you are looking for more information about ardra, get to know the overrulers and supreme deities of rahu, durga (the goddess of power) and the serpent god, and mercury, vishnu (the maintainer) and narayana (the cosmic person)!! if any of my placements or information is incorrect please feel free to let me know! also, i am fully aware of the origins of vedic astrology and if i was in anyway disrespectful to hindu culture, i will take down this post immediately xx
* all of these placements were found using astrotheme/.com and/or astro-charts/.com. it is important to note that some chandra (moon) placements may be off by up to 6 degrees and lagnas (risings) as well, due to the fact that many websites do not have a 100% accurate birth time for the given celebrities.
* i take no credit for the invention of vedic astrology-based appearance profiles. please watch claire nakti on youtube or look into @/cn0bles, @/lovejustlied, @/dh4nishta, and @/vanillemercure on twitter for more in-depth analysis on vedic astrology xx

What are your favorite character from each of your top 5 IP’s into?
UGH Don’t make me choose waifus.
Alright alright...
So.
Tracer (Overwatch) is a really submissive girl, who really works hard to please. She goes out of her way to get her dommes to control her and loves to get rewarded with a face-sitting. She doesn’t so much like ass-play, but doesn’t resist it because Emily loves that booty.
Sylvanas (Warcraft) is super boring, she hates sex because it is beneath her. The best you’ll get is a reluctant handjob from her, but she’ll happily pass you off to one of her minions if it’ll get you and your filthy cock away from her - specifically she likes trying to breed her Valkyr and given how precious they are to her, you will be bound and gagged the entire time. You might not even be warned, and you probably won’t be able to resist. Chandra (MtG) is super “slutty”, she fucks everything and has no impulse control. She’s into everything, but the best thing in the world to her is getting her pussy eaten, and absolutely wrecking your face as she does it. She gives no fucks about you or your feelings, she’ll pump and dump you as quickly as she burns mana. Then, if you’re not a bitch about it, she might come back on the regular if you’re good enough. Vi (League of Legends) is the handjob queen, no-one does them fiercer. She’s super into sloppy, angry, absolute “wreck me” sex but will kick the shit out of you if you dare disrespect her. It ain’t rough enough unless you leave bruised. She is also partial to blowjobs, it really makes her juices flow to roughly wrap her throat around a thick cock and drain it dry. But she really doesn’t like getting degraded guys... no seriously. (maybe a little)
Kerrigan (Starcraft) is a size queen and a breeder, she loves to see her armies grow just like she loves to see her own belly swell. Luckily for her, being a brood-mother for the Zerg is the perfect job for her and her adaptable body can handle just about anything with ease. She’s got no interest in small dicks, but she’ll play with just about anyone who she catches. She loves to see her prey squirm.

Celebrating 100 years of Satyajit Ray: The Man Who Taught People About Love by Vinay Pathak - Part 1 - brunch columns
https://liveindiatimes.com/celebrating-100-years-of-satyajit-ray-the-man-who-taught-people-about-love-by-vinay-pathak-part-1-brunch-columns/
Tumblr media
For most people, Satyajit Ray is synonymous with Pather Panchali, but for me, his best film was always Charulata (The Lonely Wife), a masterpiece based on Rabindranath Tagore’s Nashtanirh(The Broken Nest).
I remember watching Charulata for the first time. I must have been in college then and had just begun to take my love for literature a bit more seriously.
What struck me the most about the film, was the uncanny emotional connect I had with it, very similar to how I felt while reading Shartchand (Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay) and Premchand. Charulata signifies forbidden, cardinal love. It is a story of confused lovers played out in a time and space where nothing was favourable towards them except the very shackles and norms that also bound them together.
Growing pains
When you are on the verge of adulthood, as I was when I watched the film, you are filled with unknown ambitions and the passion to do so much, create so much, influence so much that sometimes you end up being confused about who you are and what you really want. This is because there is so much bubbling inside you and you don’t know how to express it all. Love has strange ways of influencing you, despite your lack of knowledge of where and when and how and through whom it is bestowed upon you. For me, Charulata stands for that beauty and that confusion. It stands for that imperfect and yet absolute perfect enchantment. It was like music that soothes your heart, yet causes your whole being to ache.
When ray’s fictional detective character appeared on TV, I wondered: could this man do everything? Should I not watch any other filmmaker? I am not even Bengali!
When I read Gunahon Ka Devta by Dharamvir Bharati and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, a certain melody and pain and enchantment occurred within me. I didn’t know how to describe it. I was discovering the treasures of literature and they were varied. When I read Shekhar Ek Jeevni, I was blown by its candour and its seeking of the meaning of puberty and youth and love and longings. And then there was D H Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover. I was scarred by the tragedy of love in literature and the arts, especially because in real life I was yet to experience it.
When Charulata happened to me, I had already read all these books and found a little affinity with them, which was very personal and dear. I didn’t want to tell anyone what I’d read and how those books made me feel. However when I finished watching Charulata, my first reaction was, ‘Oh my god! Perhaps Ray has read all the books that I have and he might be the only one who knows how I am feeling.’ I know this sounds a bit morbid, but that’s exactly what I felt.
How wonderfully heart withering and vulnerable that film was for me!

The wizard of all
I remember a phase when the sentiments of those books got to me, to the point where I deliberately started reading detective novels to avoid emotional impact. The Bourne Identity was one of the bestsellers at that time and I got hooked again. That was when Ray’s fictional detective character Feluda appeared on television, I think. I was aghast. Could this man do everything? Should I not watch any other filmmaker? Would it be healthy to be spellbound by another master?
Such was his shadow while I was growing up. And mind you, I am not a Bengali. I didn’t even grow up in Bengal. I don’t even speak the language. Hell, I was not even that big a film buff at the time. What was this man turning me into?
Then I saw Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne and there was no more point of return. Satyajit Ray was my hero. Cinema was my obsession. And Charulata was my film. I was ready to fall in love.
Truly, with that one film, Ray became a wizard who magically knew how my heart beats when it is in the grips of the pangs of love.
Vinay Pathak is a film and theatre actor best known for his acts in Bheja Fry and Khosla Ka Ghosla. He garnered rave reviews for playing a middle-aged closeted gay guy in Made in Heaven.
This is Part One of a series of essays celebrating the legendary filmmaker, Satyajit Ray. Next week’s tribute is by artist Bose Krishnamachari.

RedInstead Challenge Day 6: Autistic Characters
My favorite canonically autistic characters are Spencer Reid, Zack Addy, Narset, Julia and Symmetra. As for headcanons (which is why I don’t list Narset with the  Planeswalkers I headcanon as autistic and likewise with Symmetra with the Overwatch heroes, since they’re canon representation), here’s a bit of a giant list
Everyone in the Pokemon universe (and I truly mean everyone, I just consider Cyrus a bit of an embarrassment to autistic-kind)
All SBURB/SGRUB etc. players from Homestuck (I love someone’s headcanon I read somewhere that the game does that on purpose)
Every Warehouse Caretaker, past, present and future, from Warehouse 13 (from good ones like Claudia and Mrs. Frederic to evil ones like Paracelsus) and, as with SBURB, I headcanon the Warehouse does that on purpose, selecting for at least the most autistic traits (because they’re best suited to the responsibility) even if no one (like was the case for most of history) has a diagnosis
Broadway characters
Carrie White from Carrie
Tracy Turnblad from Hairspray
Alexander Hamilton from Hamilton
Nina Rosario and Usnavi from In The Heights
Matilda Wormwood from Matilda
Mark Cohen from Rent
Eleanor Fairchild from Starmites
Leaf Coneybear, Logainne Schwarzandgrubinierre, Marcy Park and Olive Ostrovsky from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Elder Arnold Cunningham from The Book Of Mormon
Ariel from The Little Mermaid
Elphaba from Wicked
Zanna from Zanna, Don’t
Cartoon characters
Buster Baxter, D.W. Read, Fern Walters and Prunella Deegan from Arthur
Jackie, Inez and Matt from Cyberchase
Dipper and Mabel Pines from Gravity Falls
The Question from Justice League Unlimited
Arnold, Dorothy Ann and Tim as well as Ms, Frizzle from The Magic School Bus
the whole Botsford family as well as Captain Tangent, Dr. Two-Brains, Lady Redundant Woman, Miss Question and Mr. Big from WordGirl
Live-Action TV characters
Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds
Douglas Fargo, Henry Deacon, Holly Marten and Jim Taggart from Eureka
Emily, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, Sookie St. James, Lane Kim, Luke Danes and Jess Mariano from Gilmore Girls
Audrey Parker and Nathan Wuornos from Haven
Henry Mills from Once Upon A Time
Kara Danvers from Supergirl
Gilda Flip, Marcus Barnes and Manny Spamboni from The Electric Company
Barry Allen, Caitlin Snow, Cisco Ramon, Eobard Thawne, Harrison Wells (in all seen incarnations), Hartley Rathaway and Leonard Snart from The Flash
Cassandra Cillian, Dulaque, Ezekiel Jones, Flynn Carsen, Jacob Stone, Jenkins and Lucy Lyon from The Librarians
Sue Heck from The Middle
the Bird-Kersee family from The Neighbors (granted, they are aliens, but they do display a lot of traits between them that could be thought of as autistic if they were human, and no, not all are from classic alien “stranger-in-a-strange-land-ness”)
Pete Lattimer from Warehouse 13 (Claudia’s mentioned with the other Caretakers above)
Characters from other forms of media (books, movies, etc.)
Elsa from Frozen
Pip from Great Expectations
Luna and Xenophilius Lovegood from Harry Potter
Chandra Nalaar, Elspeth Tirel, Jace Beleren, Nissa Revane, Ral Zarek, Saheeli Rai and Tezzeret from Magic: The Gathering (yes, even villains can be autistic without being stereotypical and I have a couple more MtG headcanons but this is just the Planeswalkers)
D.va, Efi, Hanzo, Lucio, Orisa and Sombra from Overwatch
Annabeth Chase, Leo Valdez and Percy Jackson from the Riordanverse

VIVI | ...I kind of hate them. Does that make me terrible? JULIÁN | Prince Frederick and Lady Emily? Why? VIVI | They're so perfect together. JULIÁN | ...are they? VIVI | Well, I think so. Opposites attract, right? JULIÁN | I think there's something to be said for shared interests. VIVI | Like what? Music and fashion? JULIÁN | Music, fashion, long walks on the beach...you look lovely, by the way. VIVI | Stop. You're ridiculous. JULIÁN | Beautiful, I'll say it as many times as it takes for you to believe it. VIVI | Shh! What if someone overhears you? VIVI | ...we should find somewhere we can speak privately. [Makin' out in the coat check room] VIVI | [moans softly] JULIÁN | [softly] Mmm...we should get out of here. JULIÁN | [breathily] I want you in my bed. I want to get my mouth on you. I want— VIVI | [gasps] W-wait— JULIÁN | Are you okay? VIVI | I'm sorry. You've been amazing, but I can't do this. VIVI | My husband— JULIÁN | He's not here, beautiful. He can't hurt you. VIVI | I know. VIVI | I'm sorry. You've been amazing, but...I just can't. VIVI | I really want to, but... JULIÁN | I get it. You're a good girl. VIVI | I'm sorry. JULIÁN | You apologize too much. You've done nothing wrong. But if you ever change your mind... JULIÁN | ...I'll be right here, waiting.

Fucked up twd fandom things:
The time that TPTB banned Emily Kinney from speaking at cons for like an entire year
When Andy randomly left WSC an hour early and missed the giant photo op and all these people lost like $300
When MMB went to Chi WSC, signed things for like 30 mins, didn’t let anyone take pictures and then left.
The fact that Lauren Cohan hasn’t acknowledged Emily Kinney’s existence since 2014
Every single twitter exchange with that guy who played the doctor in Coda
The time someone said they saw Cecilia Singley grocery shopping so it MUST be for a death dinner.
The time AMC spoiled Coda for the west coast
When Emily wrote a song about masturbating and crylers were outraged on behalf of every child who might hear the song.
Yvette Nicole Brown
When AMC almost sued TSDF
“Lazy writing.” -Twitter, @SteveYeun
That EW article of all the dead characters (which was also an article of all the black characters).
Chandra.
That Norman Reedus Gossip blog.
The hate I got from photoshopping Carol’s face on Yzma’s body.

Tiffany Hines
Article by Diane Walsh
If you haven’t noticed Tiffany Hines on either the LA or Toronto entertainment scene then you haven’t been paying, enough, proper attention.  She’s hopping amazing! Appearing all over the place, on multiple popular TV series not only as an actress but also as a singer - AND - she can dance.  Tiffany struck me as someone with a real nice, down-home attitude. A person, modest about her talents and accomplishments, yet worthy of being a role model for young women. On top of that…nobody can help but notice she’s gorgeous to boot! The ‘total package’ as we [*WINK*] occasionally, annoyingly-crass-journalists, explete, from time to time when we see a gem.  And a diamond in the rough Tiffany sure is. You star in the new CW TV-series, Nikita, as Jaden’ What does she mean to you? Tell us Jaden’. Most people will see her as the mean girl at first, but to me she is so much more. What makes her interesting is that in the beginning she comes across as a tough girl, but as we get to know her we discover she also has this vulnerable side. The tough exterior is all she has ever known. She relies on that to protect the real Jaden underneath that has never felt love and acceptance and wants it more than anything in the world. When I first read the pilot it really intrigued me how hard she is at first, but how fiercely she tries to cover up her feelings for Thom. I was like, oh... I see you Jaden... I get you. And what we can expect from the series?
As the show progresses, we will get to learn more about each of the characters. Who they were before they came to Division and how they ended up there. And of course we will learn more about Michael and Nikita's past. You can definitely expect more action, and you can expect more writing that continues to keep you guessing. I constantly find myself reading scripts with a bag of popcorn, flipping feverishly through them and going "What?! That did NOT just happen!" [Laughs] I hope you all enjoy watching it as much as I enjoy making it for you! It’s sweet that Nikita is being filmed in Toronto. How do you like TO by the way?
At first I was a little apprehensive about living in Toronto. I am a country mouse through and through! So being surrounded by all this concrete and all these buildings in downtown Toronto, instead of trees and yards was a bit of a change for me. But now I absolutely love it. I love exploring the city. And I'm proud to say I am becoming very streetcar and subway savvy. This from the girl that takes a cab in NYC to go three blocks because I'm scared I will get lost! [Laughs] But yeah, Toronto is great. I love filming here. The people are amazing, there's amazing Canadian destinations I can see on my days off...and the Poutine, Tim Hortons Coffee, and Ketchup chips are addicting! Are your Canadian fans any different from your American ones?
I think all my fans are great! It's flattering to know I have them in both countries as well as the rest of the world.  I am just really grateful for all their love and support, because without them I would never be able to keep doing what I love. I want to share as much of this journey with them as I can. How did you enjoy playing in the romantic-comedy movie, Perfect Combination, alongside Christian Keyes, Angell Conwell, Kareem Grimes, and Ayo Sorrells?
We had such a blast shooting that movie! From day one we felt like the best of friends. We had so much fun on set, but everyone was so professional and determined to make a great film. As shooting continued, we actually became a family. In this business you are constantly on the go and often it's hard to keep those relationships going after you wrap the film. I feel so blessed that now so many of them are my closest friends.  Even the Executives of Tri-Destined Studios who produced the film are like family and keep in touch! I feel so fortunate to have had that experience, and I truly love each of them dearly. Any favorite brand promotions that you’ve done or would like to do in the future? Old Navy again perhaps?
I really enjoyed my time with Old Navy. I am also a huge video game playing geek so I think it would be cool to do promotions for a video game company like Activision or EA Sports. And since I love beauty products and makeup, I think it would be interesting to promote a beauty or makeup line. But the one rule I live by is, that I really have to be passionate about something, and truly BELIEVE in a product if I am going to promote it. Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, Criminal Minds, Miss Guided – this is getting to be quite a list! You must be very proud. And also – of your role as – Allysha, in the film, The Winged Man, which, I understand, was honored as the Official Selection in the Rhode Island Film Festival, LA Short Film Festival, and Big Bear Film Festival.
I am so thankful to have been in projects that have allowed me to work with and learn from so many brilliant and talented actors and actresses so early in my career. Working with people like Chandra Wilson, Tamara Taylor, Emily Deschanel, Jesse Williams, David Boreanaz, and so many more, has really been inspiring for me and has taught me so much about my craft. Playing Allysha in the Winged Man  from Esperanza Productions was such a beautiful experience as well. It was such an honor to be able to participate in a project penned by Oscar nominee Jose Rivera. And I don't think there was one person, whether it was cast, crew, or producers who were not touched after participating in that film. We were all so thrilled when something we had worked so passionately on, was recognized by such respected film festivals. You as Kelly Hawkins, lesbian student, on ABC Family's Lincoln Heights is a stand-out.  Why do you think that is? Along with, you, as Layla, on CSI?
Well my role as Kelly on Lincoln Heights is probably one of the most controversial roles I have ever played. In the episode I kiss one of the lead actresses. I think a lot of people were shocked at that episode. But I was happy that ABC Family pushed the envelope like that. I think that television and film is a representation of all us...our culture...who we are, and all of the experiences that make us human. I was proud to be part of something where I was representing the voice of a group of people who in the past have been seriously underrepresented and misrepresented in T.V. and film. Playing the role of Layla in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was also very different from my other roles, because I got to sing. I played this girl who was about to win an amateur national televised singing contest, and the CSI team has to find out who murdered her. It was exhilarating and fun to incorporate both of my loves, singing and acting, into my work at the same time. A lot of people don't know that I sing and were surprised I actually did all my own singing in that episode.     Of course, you’ve got to tell us about your character ‘Michelle Welton’ on Bones and ‘Lacey’ on Lie to Me. What’s that like?
One of the things I love the most about being an actress is the vast different people you get to be. I am basically getting paid to do now, what I did as a kid for free... play make believe! Michelle is a young and sweet impressionable 16 year old. She is the adopted daughter of Detective Camille Saroyan (played by Tamara Taylor) on Bones. I love playing Michelle because on the one hand she is so sweet and has a good heart, but on the other hand she is a rebellious teenager who is trying to discover who she is as a woman. My role of Lacey on Lie to Me is completely different from my role of Michelle on Bones. She is a hardened 25 year old woman who has had a rough life and makes her living as a porn star. I love putting on various different hats like that and not limiting myself to just being a character that is the mirror image of myself. Part of the reason I love acting is because I get to be so many different people from one day to the next. In any other field, I would probably be considered certifiably insane and locked in a padded room. But as an actress I get praised for it. I love working with the cast of Bones! It is one of the most fun sets I've ever had the privilege of filming on. Bones is a popular series.  Why do you think it is?
I think there are a lot of reasons why it is popular. First off, the writing is amazing, and secondly, the two leads David and Emily are great at bringing those beloved characters to life. Lastly, I think that everyone on the show, from the cast, to the crew, to the producers really have amazing chemistry together and work so hard from week to week to continue bringing a quality story to life. I feel so lucky that their family opened up their arms to me. That amazing chemistry that spans across the entire family is infectious and you can see it in every scene and in every show of theirs that you watch.   What’s your favorite TV series? Apart from the ones you’re in, of course!
True Blood! I AM SO ADDICTED! I think Alan Ball is a Genius! I am a huge fan of the books by Charlaine Harris. I read often, and it is very rare that I love a television or film adaptation as much as I love a book that I've read. But Alan is brilliant because he keeps even the fans of the books on the edge of our seats. I never know what's going to happen, and I am completely hooked. Also since I love music, of course my other favorite show is Glee! I can't get enough and my iPod is filled with all their music. Is Glee up your street somewhere in the future, do you think?
I definitely wouldn't turn down the offer if it came. I think anyone that did would be crazy! I don't know one actor/singer that wouldn't want to be on Glee...myself included. In your past, you’ve won several dance titles.  What are your dance fortes and what’s your favorite sound to dance to?
I love every form of dance.  I started out clogging, and some of my favorite types of dance I used to compete in are ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical/contemporary, musical theatre and hip hop, but I also dabble in salsa and meringue. Next I would love to learn the various ballroom styles and African dance. My favorite music to dance to is any kind of music that stirs up a strong emotion inside me. The emotion starts within in me, and then comes out in my dancing. To me, dance is emotion put into motion. Who are your role models?
I find inspiration from anywhere and anyone. Some of the people who are my role models are celebrities, some of them are the women in my family, some are close friends of mine, and some are people I have never met, but I have heard their stories and it touches me. Some of my favorites are My Grandmother, Angelina Jolie, Michelle Obama, and L.Y. Marlow of the Saving Promise organization that is fighting to end domestic violence. There are so many others, but if I named them all here now, this interview would take up hundreds of pages! [Laughs] Out of the big-name people you’ve worked with - Katherine Heigl, Ellen Pompeo, Loretta Divine, Hayden Panatierre, Kim Kardashian, Thomas Dekker, Tracy Thoms, and Jesse Williams – what stands out for you?
Every single big-name person I've ever worked with, cared less about being a big name than they did about bringing 150 percent to the table and doing a great job. At the end of the day, it is all about the work... doing not just good work, but great work. One of the most eye opening lessons I learned while working with so many brilliant actors, is that I don't have to be the best, but I do have to be better than I was the day before. If you focus on that, the sky's the limit. Great lesson! You play violin and piano, and you sing and you dance.  Can you talk a bit about your musical background and your goals in this area?
When I was in the fourth grade I wanted to play the piano, but my mother said it was too big to fit in her house, so we went with the violin instead! [Laughs] I was kind of a natural at it, and from a very young age I started writing my own songs and even wrote a symphony that my elementary school orchestra performed. I also was one of the youngest kids admitted into the youth orchestra program at Florida State University when I was 10. Music, singing, and dancing has always been a huge part of who I am as long as I can remember. One of the first movies I ever saw was Singing in the Rain. I was pretty young when I saw it, maybe 5 or 6. But I will never forget when Debbie Reynolds did her Good Morning dance. I used to try to sing and dance like her and I would get so frustrated that I was too little to tip the couch over like she did during the routine! [Laughs]... As far as singing goes, when I got older, I also sang and performed in a couple bands in my hometown of Cincinnati and even recorded a few songs on my own. I really miss that side of the performing arts and eventually I would like to make my way back to it. Previously, you’d co-written some original songs and (I’m told) you still dabble in song-writing.  Did you want to say a wee bit about your also being a vocalist, and your future aspirations?
I really miss my music, but I know it is only a matter of time before I get back to it. I still keep a notebook under my bed and write songs all the time. I really believe that everything happens for a reason. I feel so blessed and grateful to be working as an actress right now, so for now I am focusing on that. But when the time is right for my music, I know that it will happen too. For now, I am just going to continue writing and when I can, I will go back to the studio and start recording again. You were born in Cincinnati but grew up in Tallahassee, Florida. What do you love most of Cincinnati and Tallahassee? Is there anything you hate, like people asking you about WKRP in Cincinnati and if you’ve ever met Loni Anderson! Or if you like alligators!
My favorite things about Cincinnati are Skyline, Graeters Ice Cream, Kings Island, and WEBN Fireworks. Tallahassee was one of my favorite places to live because it had that southern hospitality feel to it. It's the kind of place where one second you could be talking to someone in line at the grocery store, and the next second they are inviting you over for homemade lemonade on their porch. I feel so blessed to have grown up in such amazing cities like Cincinnati and Tallahassee. I think it's funny when people ask me about WKRP in Cincinnati. I mean, the show was airing before I was even born, yet people ask me all the time if it is a real radio station. [Laughs] For the record, WKRP is a fictional radio station. But I think it's cool that a show that has been off the air for so long has been able to put Cincinnati on the map like that. As far as Loni Anderson goes, I haven't met her, but if I ever got the chance to, I would want to ask her if she likes Cincinnati and what she thinks about Cincinnati Skyline Chili. I am NOT a big fan of alligators... But that's probably because when my family was living in Tallahassee, one of them ended up in our backyard pool and scared the living hell out of me at a very young age. If I ever see one again in person that up close and personal I would probably crap my pants. Do you return to your birthplace in Ohio?
Yes. I still have a lot of close friends and family living in Cincinnati. I try to get back as often as I can. Especially for big holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving.   After spending time in Ohio and Kentucky, and then Los Angeles when your career starting taking off – how did that feel?  Any thoughts on the California-LA experience?
I absolutely love living in LA. I feel like I am in one of the biggest creative playgrounds in the world. There is so much to learn in a city like that, that embraces the arts. It was definitely scary for me to leave my hometown for LA. I had to give up everything I knew, and drive all the way across the country to this strange land where I didn't know anyone, on a whim and a prayer that things would work out. It is the hardest thing I have ever done, but I am really glad I did it, because now I absolutely love where my journey has led me. I have learned so much about life and my craft after living in California, and I can't wait to learn even more. Do you like Facebook? Do you tweet?
I am so grateful to all my fans and all the support they have shown me, so I try to Facebook and Tweet as much as possible. Without their support I wouldn't be able to do what I love, so I think it is only fair that I share that journey with them. I try to reach out to all my fans as much as possible via twitter and my Facebook Fan Page. Lastly, I got to ask…what do you like to do for fun?
For fun, I do anything and everything! Some of my favorite things to do for fun are making up recipes and cooking for my friends, playing video games, reading sci fi and mystery novels and of course, my new favorite pastime... reading comics.

Desiree Akhavan: 'The only mainstream queer female stories have been directed by men – it disgusts me'
New Post has been published on http://funnythingshere.xyz/desiree-akhavan-the-only-mainstream-queer-female-stories-have-been-directed-by-men-it-disgusts-me/
Desiree Akhavan: 'The only mainstream queer female stories have been directed by men – it disgusts me'
Saturday morning, Shoreditch House. Desiree Akhavan sits in a comfy corner of east London’s media darling hangout, and does not seem out of place. Her hair is shaggy and rockstar-esque, her red lipstick sharp. Slim gold chains dangle from her neck. She looks like she belongs.
This might seem trivial, but it’s not. What writer/actor/director Akhavan is interested in – what she examines, unpicks, takes seriously and takes the mickey out of – is fitting in. “A lot of life is about identity, and comfort within that,” she says. She admits to feeling odd if she’s in the wrong clothes. “Even something as stupid as that – what I’m wearing – needs to feel like it represents me. If doesn’t, I feel… off.”
Identity can seem a daft thing to worry about, until you consider how much trouble it can cause. (Do you identify as British? Or European? We’ll stop there.) And everyone sends out signals about who they are; Akhavan is brilliant on how those signals affect how you’re treated by others, particularly if you’re a young gay woman. Plus, she makes you laugh. “I see where the funny lies and where the story is, and I chase the story wherever it leads me,” she told the New York Times recently.
If you haven’t yet seen her work, she has two new pieces landing in August and September: her second feature film, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which won the grand jury prize at Sundance film festival in January; and a Channel 4 series, The Bisexual. Cameron Post is a moving chronicle of a teenage lesbian sent to gay conversion camp in the 1990s; The Bisexual is a comedy about a contemporary gay woman who decides to date men. They’re very different, but both, at their heart, reveal how life can be when you’re young and don’t have an easy path within straight culture.
Akhavan made a splash in 2014 with her first feature, Appropriate Behaviour, which saw her playing Shirin, a raw, self-obsessed, coulda-shoulda gay woman emerging from a live-in relationship. We followed Shirin around Brooklyn, New York, as she experimented with hookups (an excruciating threesome was a dubious highlight) and worried about hiding her sexuality from her Iranian family, and learned the story of her just-finished love affair. Appropriate Behaviour was explicit, hilarious and bang-up-to-the-minute. Comparisons were drawn with Lena Dunham (who cast Akhavan in Girls after seeing Appropriate Behaviour), and also with Akhavan’s own life. Born to parents who moved to New York following the Iranian revolution in 1979, she, too, is bisexual and found it hard to come out to her family. Still, it wouldn’t be right to view her work as documentary. “It’s my world,” she says, “but it’s not me.”
There’s something toxic in the industry, a place where women are paid a quarter of what men are paid for the same job
Desire Akhavan
Let’s begin with The Bisexual. Set in east London, where Akhavan now lives (“I felt my humour had a home in London. Also, I don’t know the hierarchies here. I’m sure they exist, but I don’t know them like I do in New York”), the cast includes Maxine Peake and Brendon Gleeson, and explores some of the same themes as Appropriate Behaviour. Akhavan plays Leila, who splits up with her girlfriend of 10 years (Peake) and starts dating men as well as women.
“The elevator pitch was always: ‘What if a lesbian did the worst thing in the world a lesbian could do, and became interested in men?’” she says. “I wanted to write the show because I hated coming out as bisexual. I came out as that from the get-go, but that word always felt uncomfortable. Bisexual sounds gauche and tacky… Disingenuous. Whereas there’s only pride when I say lesbian, there’s only coolness to say queer. Bisexual didn’t feel like it represented me and I wanted to know why, when technically it very much represents who I am.”
It’s not just about the label. Akhavan knows first-hand how the world changes when your partner does. “If I’m walking down the street with a woman, I’m a lesbian; if I’m holding hands with a man, I’m straight,” she says. “And you see the world through that lens, and everyone treats you accordingly. Your lifestyle is completely different, the people you hang around with are different, and when you fight so hard to be openly gay, and claim that space – then having to reverse engineer it, and notice the world change around you, and the perspective change around you, that is a real head-fuck.”
Akhavan describes a couple of scenes to me; The Bisexual sounds funny. I can’t be sure, though, as the series isn’t finished when we meet; so before we do, I email Maxine Peake. Peake, who seems to have had a great time on set, admires the way Akhavan made her co-writer/director/lead actor multi-tasking seem “effortless”. “She always felt like a team member,” writes Peake.
Akhavan is embarrassed when I read this out to her, even more so when I read Peake’s payoff line: “I appoint Desiree the new ambassador of cool.” Akhavan squirms because she’s not always been cool, by any means. Actually, she spent much of her younger life as a very uncool person. “Not even uncool. Just invisible,” she says. But before we get to that, we should consider The Miseducation of Cameron Post.

Adapted from Emily M Danforth’s 2012 book, the film tells the tale of Cameron Post, played by Chlöe Grace Moretz, who’s outed as a lesbian when she’s caught by her male prom date making out with a girl. She’s immediately packed off to God’s Promise, a Christian teen camp, in order to be “cured” of her sexuality. The cure consists of living among other teens who feel SSA – same sex attraction – and who are, mostly, working hard to overcome this through talking therapy, physical exercise (“blessercise” workout videos), loving Gahd and having no contact with the outside world (Post has her Breeders cassette confiscated). It’s a funny and gut-wrenching film, with moments of poignancy and some excellent performances.
Interestingly, for such an emotive subject, none of the characters are portrayed as completely evil. “I didn’t want it to be propaganda,” says Akhavan. “Though I think that would be a more commercially successful film. I wanted the tone to be right… Every film about teens is really about the moment they realise that none of the adults know what they’re doing.”
On the surface, Cameron Post is a move away from Akhavan’s other work, less obviously tied to her own life experience. But when we talk about her background, it becomes clear that this film, too, is a way of her exploring her own past.
Born in 1984 (she has one brother, who’s a paediatric urologist), Akhavan grew up in New York State, some distance from the upmarket Manhattan high school that she attended. Like many girls, she covered the wall of her room in magazine cutouts: “Pretty girls in pretty dresses, like a how-to guide on how to be a normal teenager.” But she wasn’t deemed normal – she was tall and overweight, with big feet – and school was tough. “I was the girl who made birthday cakes on your birthday,” she says, “that had tissues if you needed them. You know? The one that tried to kill people with niceness. Because niceness was all I had.”
When she was 14, Akhavan received an anonymous email, with a website link. “There was a website for the hottest person at school,” she says, “and it was very popular, and the link was to the opposite, the ugliest person at school. I had 40-something votes, and everyone else had two or three.” She pauses. “That’ll shape you.” Her nickname at school was the Beast.
She understands why she didn’t fit in – “there was one aesthetic, and it was: very thin, very petite, straight hair, straight nose, Petit Bateau T-shirt, 7 For All Mankind jeans, North Face fleece” – but these things take their toll. Still, she now thinks she was lucky: “I know those girls who fit in at that age, and it was through a sexual power that they couldn’t handle. Power is a really tricky thing, it’s overwhelming. If men had paid attention to me at that age, I would have gotten in trouble.”
Back then, however, she had no self-comforting theories. She was unhappy. She made it through school, and then went to film school, where she spent most of her time being lonely, eating a lot and smoking weed. She sank all her energies into her graduation work, a short movie she shot in very expensive Super 16 film, then sent to 30 film festivals. It was rejected by all of them. By this time, she had full-on bulimia.
“I was trying so hard and failing so miserably,” she says. “I’d got to the point where I had no idea if my graduation film was any good or not. I had no idea what my taste was… the same way I didn’t know if I was hungry or full, because I was making myself sick all the time.”

So, aged 25, she went into rehab, at a place called the Renfrew Center in New York, where she was given a programme for eating (“diet, nutritionist, meal plan”), plus various forms of intense therapy. It was this time that she drew on for Cameron Post. “Really, it’s my film about rehab,” she says. “In rehab, there was always this question of: ‘OK, what if overeating is actually my personality? What if it’s part of me, the way my sexuality is?’ That became the question that I wanted to explore. We all wanted to be better, but what if we wanted to be better from something we could never get better from?”
In the film, Akhavan identifies most with Cameron’s room-mate Erin (Emily Skeggs), a relentlessly upbeat girl who never stops trying to not be gay. “She really wants it to work,” she says. “That’s like me. I remember my first few weeks in rehab, and I was like: ‘What am I doing here, I hate every single person here, and I don’t want to listen to their problems.’ And then, as you stay a little longer, you realise that you’re staring at 12 different versions of yourself, and what you hate in them is everything you hate in yourself. That was something I wanted to make a film about, and I wasn’t ready to make a film about eating disorders.”
When I wonder if there are any films about eating disorders, Akhavan points to Mike Leigh’s Life Is Sweet. “I love that film. That sequence where she binges and purges, it’s terrifying, and it’s exactly how it felt! No other film deals with it quite as horrifyingly.”
In addition to going into rehab, Akhavan fell in love with a woman and came out to her parents. This was not easy. “No,” she says. “It’s just a really, really horrifying, shameful, awful thing to say. It took all the guts in the world to say it. And also, coming out as bisexual. I mean, everyone was heartbroken, and really worried. My family was like: ‘Well, if you could choose, why would you choose something that makes everyone so unhappy and that makes your life worse?’ And I understood their point.”
Now, her family is completely supportive; so much so that Akhavan’s dad worried that if she started dating men again, she might alienate her audience. Akhavan laughs about this. It’s almost impossible, when confronted with the confident, clever woman that she is today, to imagine that she blossomed from such a dark time.

But she did, and, even as a success, she still needs to draw on that confidence. Cameron Post, despite winning Sundance, struggled to find a distributor. “Very few women have won the Sundance award, and it’s not escaping me that the one film that’s about female sexuality, directed by a woman, is having a harder time getting out there,” she says. “I mean, other than our film, I can’t think of a [Sundance grand jury-winning] film of the recent past that hasn’t been a major player and been nominated for an Oscar… Things are changing in the industry, but female-driven stories, specifically sexually driven female stories, are very difficult. If there is sex in the film, it has to be a man’s pleasure.” (Chlöe Grace Moretz has recently pointed out that another forthcoming film about gay conversion therapy, Boy Erasedcorr, made by Joel Edgerton, has had no such distribution problems.)
Which brings us to the inevitable Harvey Weinstein question. “I think it can only be good, what’s happening,” says Akhavan of the #MeToo movement. “I want people to be afraid and I want people to check their behaviour. I’ve had to. Not in a Weinstein way, but because I’m so direct on a shoot, I got feedback that how I talk could be seen as insulting. And I learned from that. I think you should learn, as an adult, how to be yourself, and not be aggressive to other people. It is totally good to have a healthy sense of awareness. There’s clearly something toxic in this industry, a place where women are paid a quarter of what the men are paid for the exact same job. Clearly there’s something diseased here. And now maybe we’ll see that the work won’t suffer because of this, that it will become exciting and diverse and tell stories we haven’t heard before. The fact that the only mainstream queer female stories we’ve heard have been directed by men – that disgusts me.”
She goes back to her rehab time, the six months that totally changed her. It is not as though she doesn’t still have problems, she says – “at all times in life, even when you reach success, the dust settles and there are new sets of problems, new identity crises” – but after that, “I was fearless. It wasn’t rebellion, it was just: ‘I want to make the calls. I want to do things on my terms, and I don’t want fear to drive anything I do.’ I truly became fearless. And that’s what the change was.”
Not fitting in can feel terrible, but outsiders make the best art, I say. Akhavan thinks it’s more than that.
“Before rehab, I had the feeling that I’d rather be dead than fat,” she says. “But then I started thinking: ‘What kind of power could I have as a woman who wasn’t beautiful?’ This is the superpower of the late bloomer. Time proves you wrong, and something that you think will handicap your life ends up becoming your superpower. All my handicaps became my superpowers.”
The Miseducation of Cameron Post is in cinemas 7 September
