I had decided to come in late January, when archaeologists would be on their midsemester teaching break, though everyone warned me it might rain. When I arrived at the City of David, workmen were refinishing the wooden deck at the site’s entrance and laying down a marble mosaic by the ticket window. Monday is the day when bar and bat mitzvahs are held in Israel, and drumbeats from distant celebrations mixed with the pounding of jackhammers from construction sites nearby. Tour buses lined up like train cars along the ridge. Outside the Old City walls, in the open air, I found light and heat and noise. I passed through the Western Wall Plaza to the Dung Gate, popularly believed to mark the ancient route along which red heifers were led to the Temple for sacrifice. Benrath Palace

Schloss Benrath is located in Düsseldorf, Germany. The Baroque-style pink mansion was built for the Elector Palatine Charles Theodor and his wife Countess Palatine Elisabeth Auguste of Sulzbach in 1755, with construction completed in 1770. Benrath is now a borough of Düsseldorf. The central building is flanked by two arched wings that surround part of a circular pond. Benrath Palace has served as a museum since 2002, with the Museum of European Garden Art in the east wing, the Museum of Natural History in the west wing, and the main section of the house offering a glimpse of the elector’s lifestyle. The palace is surrounded by 14 acres, including a baroque square hunting park with two diagonal alleys and a circular alley. The landscaped gardens stretch to the banks of the Rhine River, and the property has water features and an orangery. The interior rooms were designed to match the gardens on the grounds. Schloss Benrath is open to the public.

With the greatest regret, we inform you that we cannot accept your proposal. You have failed to prove the historical significance of the property. As you are aware by now, "historical significance" is defined as:

Associated with an important historical event or events;

A well-preserved sample of artistic or architectural style;

A reconstructed building that maintains the integrity of its original design and/or purpose;

A commemoration of local tradition or symbolic value.

While we acknowledge that 20 Alley Park is associated with Mr. Charles Aurelia, you have failed to make a case for this particular building's import. Indeed, Mr. C. Aurelia was a captain of industry who saw the construction of dozens of buildings in Newcrest, yet their importance is more of a collective nature rather than individual. Very few of his properties qualify as historically significant--and thanks to your parents' generous "donation," the Historical Society now provides for their upkeep. Considering that the property in question was gutted of its original manufacturing design and purpose, it meets none of the above criteria for historical landmark status.

We at the Historical Society applaud your dogged efforts to preserve 20 Alley Park, despite this being your tenth rejection. Your passion for our town's history, as well as the restoration of your family's reputation, is robust.

to mina, ari, yueliang and luna, can you tell us about your birthplaces? - 🧛‍♀️

Yueliang: Shanghai is the place where I was born and I lived there until I was six. After that I moved to Venice with my mother. I usually went to Shanghai every summer so I really grew up between the two cities. I love deeply both cities. Shanghai holds memories of me as a baby and all of my summers, so it's very bittersweet. I remember walking with my dad down the Waitan, and the sound of the river. We always visited the parks even if it was hot and umid. Venice, with its channels and narrow streets, reminds me of my mother, of school, of my friends and of the thousands of water bus rides. Venice is using shortcut to avoid tourists, Venice is being breathless while running around, Venice is falling in love every day, even when there is the flood (I remember those 156 cm in December 2008, I had school that day, it was horrible). I could talk for hours about my hometowns, though I can't choose my favorite one.

Mina: I was born in Busan, South Korea - living close to the sea really shaped my entire childhood, I miss the salty air and fresh breeze every day. I also have a ridiculous collection of sea shells I keep at my dad’s place 😅  Busan is truly beautiful - it’s the second biggest city in SK and has so much to offer - many cultural sites as well as great places to shop, eat or just relax. I spent half my childhood at Gwangalli beach with my family, and one of my favorite places to go was to see the colorful houses of Gamcheon culture village, and to walk those narrow alleys and climb the ridiculous amount of stairways! My family moved to Seoul when my dad got offered a better job at our capital, I was just turning 15 when that happened. My dad still lives in our old flat, which is located in Gangdong-gu, and I visit him as often as I can. The apartment complex is near Han River, so I at least had some kind of water near me, after having to move away from the sea ... 

Ari: I was born in Boston, Massachusetts in the US, and I spent a lot of my time growing up there, but spent summers and holidays (basically any other time) in Jinhae, South Korea! My parents wanted my brother and I to experience both of their cultures (my mom is Korean, dad is American), so they made sure we spoke both of the languages and that we spent plenty of time in both places. Boston was a fun place to grow up! There are some really cool museums and places to check out, and some spots of nature even in the middle of a city - I loved walked along the Charles River with my mom. My family often visited different restaurants to try different types of food, which was always really fun! Jinhae is host to several Korean naval facilities, so sometimes visiting my mom’s family can be a little hectic. But I love learning about my family’s military background and being immersed in that side of my family’s culture. Both places feel like my birthplace to me, and I love them both dearly.

Luna: I was born in Daegu and I've got to be honest we haven't spent that much time there as we moved to London when I was still a pretty small child. My parents always made it a point to make me appreciate both cultures, so it was always a mix of everything in my house, and some other time i will tell you more about London and my life there but let’s focus on Daegu for today. Daegu is such a beautiful place, when we moved to Seoul in 2014, I got the chance to explore and discover it over the past few years. It’s the perfect mix of traditional and modern. There are still so many palaces and Hanok houses that you can see when you visiting it while also being able to get the comfort of modern technology within the city. Daegu is pretty well known for the oriental medical practices and traditions that were developed which you can discover through the Yangnyeongsi Oriental Medicine Cultural Centre and its markets and exhibitions retracing the history of local medical traditions. And if you like festivals, it has some of the coolest ones in Korea. My favourite is definitely the Dalgubeol Lantern Festival where hundreds of Chinese Lanterns are launched into the night sky to celebrate Buddha’s birthday. Remember the lantern scene in Disney’s Rapunzel ? Well that’s what it looked like really ! 😍 I hope that one day, I will have the chance to go and experience it with girls. Ah I miss it 😭🥺

SYNOPSIS (FROM MARVEL DATABASE)

Prologue Two young mutant runaways named Mark and Jill are fleeing from a group of religiously motivated anti-mutant group known as the Purifiers. They chase the two children into a playground where they are executed with guns and strung up on a swing set with a sign labeling them as "Muties". Their bodies are found by the X-Men's long time foe Magneto, who vows to make those who have killed these children, and many others, pay for their crimes.

In New York City, the leader of the Purifiers, the popular televangelist Reverend William Stryker finishes reading a Bible passage from Deuteronomy 17:2-5, before getting a call from his operatives. They report to him their findings about the mutant group known as the X-Men, providing him information of their members, powers, and the well guarded secret that they operate from Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. When his aid enters his office to get him ready for his evening broadcast on the ABC network, Stryker hints that he is about to destroy the X-Men.

Chapter 1 At the dance school of Stevie Hunter in Salem Center, Kitty Pryde gets into a fight with one of her fellow students after he makes an anti-mutant comment. The fight takes them right out into the street and Piotr "Peter" Rasputin and his sister Illyana try to break it up. When Stevie goes outside to see what the commotion is about, Kitty's fellow dance student Danny tells them that Kitty attacked him when he was talking about how he and his parents were members of the Stryker Crusade and went on an anti-mutant tirade, and called Kitty a "Mutie-Lover". With the situation straightened out, Stevie sends Danny away and tells Kitty to calm down because they are only words. Kitty becomes even more upset that Stevie can be so tolerant of such hatred asking her if she would be just as tolerant if Danny called her a "Nig***-Lover" before storming off back to the Mansion. Stevie thinks Kitty was right.

When Peter and Illyana follow after her to make sure she gets home safe, Stevie considers Kitty's words and realizes that Pryde was right. Visibly upset, Stevie goes back into her dance studio, unaware that Purifiers have been watching the whole confrontation. Further still, she is unaware how close they were to killing her, the only thing saving her life being the fact that she is human.

Arriving at the Mansion, Kitty tells Logan about the scrap she had, and also tells him that she did not have the heart to win the fight because she was not fighting a super-villain or evil mutant, but a kid like her. Later, the X-Men gather to watch Nightline on ABC where their teacher, Professor Charles Xavier appears next to Reverend Stryker in a debate about the danger of mutants in their society. While Xavier maintains his long standing stance that mutants are merely the next step of evolution, Stryker airs his religious belief that mutants are an abomination before God and must be exterminated. When the interview ends, Kitty and the other X-Men are angered by Stryker's words and decide to change into costume and practice in the Danger Room to blow off some steam.

While the X-Men are training, Stryker's aid, Anne, bumps into Scott Summers and Ororo Munroe at the television station, marking them as the X-Men Cyclops and Storm. Anne approaches her leader and tells him that they will be striking the three X-Men when they approach Central Park. Just as planned, when Xavier's Royals Royce drives past Central Park they are attacked by the Purifiers, who gun all three mutants down with tranquilizer guns and blow up the Royce. When the police call the mansion later, they inform Kurt that the Professor and the others have died in a car accident, much to everyone's sadness.

Chapter 2 The next day while the other X-Men are in the city, Kitty spends some time alone outside on the Xavier state when she is joined by Illyana. Illyana tends to the grieving Kitty and the two decide to talk a walk. Along the way they come across some strange scanner device that has been setup and directed at the Mansion. Wondering who had set it up, Kitty shorts it out with her phasing powers and the two lay in hiding to see who comes to investigate.

While in the city, Wolverine, Colossus and Nightcrawler investigate the supposed accident site. While Logan and Peter examine the wreck, Kurt surveys the area in secret. When Wolverine identifies that this was no accident, Nightcrawler notifies them that two men in a car have been watching them the whole time. Wolverine decides that they should get the men and change into costume. Despite the men's attempt to flee, the three X-Men manage to disable their getaway vehicle. However these Purifier members are ready to fight using their special armor. They only get one shot in when they are stopped by Magneto, who uses his magnetic powers to destroy their armor and use it as a containment.

Back at on the Mansion property, Kitty and Illyana watch as Anne and other members of Stryker's Crusade arrive to repair the device that Kitty damage. Ariel decides to try and sneak up on them by phasing through the ground. However as she is working herself through, they activate the device and detect Illyana's proximity to them due to her mutant nature. They knock her out with a tranquilizer dart and take her hostage. When Kitty attempts to sneak into their getaway vehicle by phasing through the trunk, Anne detects it and fills the trunk with gas to knock her out as well.

Shortly thereafter, Magneto and the X-Men take the captured Purifiers back to the X-Mansion where Wolverine attempts to interrogate them by threatening to use his claws. When this does not work, Magneto tortures them with is magnetic powers and they learn that Stryker intends to use Professor Xavier to achieve his goal of complete eradication of the mutant race.

Chapter 3 At Stryker's headquarters, Charles Xavier is being put through brainwashing wherein he lives the illusion of being crucified on a cross and being attacked by the various X-Men, who torture him and maim his body until he is saved by Reverend Stryker. This brainwashing is for the purposes of bending Xavier's will and making him loyal to Stryker so that the Reverend can use Xavier's mental powers to further his goals. Stryker then goes to check on Cyclops and Storm who are also his prisoners and have been restrained and tortured in deprivation tanks. Releasing them temporarily, Storm asks Stryker why he is doing this. Stryker replies that it is because their existence "is an affront to the Lord."

Stryker explains to the two mutants why he started his crusade to eliminate Homo superior. He says that, thirty years ago, he was a soldier working for the military during nuclear tests. He was married and his wife Marcy was pregnant with their first child. When visiting Marcy's parents on the holidays their car crashed outside of Phoenix. As Anne went into labor, William helped her give birth. When he saw that his son was a mutant, he was horrified and killed his newborn child and then his own wife. He put their bodies in the wreck of their family car, which was leaking gasoline, climbed in next to them, lighting it on fire. Miraculously, Stryker survived the explosion while his family was burnt beyond recognition. After the funeral, he turned to the bottle and ultimately got removed from the military because his drinking caused him to lash out on his trainees. After hitting rock bottom, he would find new direction when he read about mutants and found God. Believing that mutants were godless abominations, the work of Satan, he began his crusade which he helped boost his popularity with the help of his newly established televangelist career.

Stryker tells his two captives that he began focusing the first part of his crusade on destroying the X-Men, and learned all about them when one of his devoted followers -- a member of the FBI -- provided him with a file on the X-Men that was prepared by one-time government liaison Fred Duncan. He concludes that he does not plan on killing the two captured X-Men yet. When Anne calls in and reports that she has Illyana and Kitty captured, Stryker orders her to bring Illyana to his offices, but to kill Kitty, much to Storm's horror. When Ororo pleads that he spare Kitty's life, he recites scripture that justifies his decision and fully imprisons them once again.

Anne and her Purifiers drive to the South Bronx, where they place a "Mutie" sign on its trunk and open fire on it. When they check to make sure that Kitty is dead, they are shocked to find that the trunk is empty. Anne orders her men to go out and track the girl down. Ariel, who had phased as soon as she heard the gas jets, tries to find her way out of the Bronx when she runs into a gang of thugs in a back alley. They are about to mug and rape her when the Purifiers arrive and demand that they turn the girl over to them. When the punks refuse, Anne shoots one of them, leading to a gun fight in the alley. Kitty manages to slip away with her phasing powers, however the Purifiers pursue her. She manages to call the Mansion and tell the other X-Men where she is before she has to flee again, this time phasing onto a passing subway train. When a police officer comes to see if she is okay, the Purifiers smash through the roof of the train. When the cop goes to her aid, they shoot him down in cold blood. Before they can kill Kitty, Magneto arrives and levitates the train, deflecting the Purifiers' bullets and energy blasts with his magnetic powers. The X-Men arrive and make short work of Kitty's attackers. With Magneto's help, the X-Men remove the bullet from the police officers chest and take him to a hospital.

A short time later, Reverend Stryker checks on Xavier and is happy to see that the brainwashing has worked and that Charles is now a willing follower of his cause. To prove this, he has Xavier to use his mental powers to seemingly slay Cyclops and Storm, as a Purifier doctor announces that their vitals signs have ceased. With the two senior X-Men seemingly slain, Stryker orders the preparations for his giant rally at Madison Square Garden.

Meanwhile, the X-Men manage to capture Stryker's head doctor and learn what Stryker is attempting. Sneaking into Stryker's office tower, they collect Storm and Cyclops's body and recover Illyana in disguise. However when they are found out by Anne, she tries to shoot them, but proves unable to stop them. As the elevator bursts through the roof through Magneto's powers, Anne jumps out onto the Stryker Building. On a rooftop, Wolverine confirms that Cyclops and Storm are not physically dead and have just had their brains shut down and vital signs reduced. Magneto manages to jump start and revive their minds with a jolt of his powers, and they learn of Stryker's full plot.

Chapter 4 At the Square, Stryker has Xavier hooked up to a machine that will allow him to detect mutants in the audience and kill them with his mental powers. As the rally begins, Stryker begins his harshest sermon yet, verbally calling out for the destruction of Mutantkind. This does not sit well with the security guards, as well as a prominent United States senator. Behind the podium, a Purifier activates the psi-scan device connected to Professor X.

Outside on a nearby building, the X-Men start bleeding from the ears and having headaches. They notice similar effects on some of the pedestrians below. Meanwhile, Magneto enters the rally through the roof and confronts Stryker. Stryker compares Magneto to the devil, and directs the psi-scan device at him to knocking him down. While the X-Men fight the Purifiers, Ariel tries to save Professor X, but he blocks her with a mindblast. As the fight carries on all the mutants -- including the Senator and Stryker's loyal minion Anne -- begin to get nose and ear bleeds. When Anne realizes this, she begs the Reverend for mercy. However, he refuses to compromise his beliefs, pushing her off the balcony and, as television cameras roll, falls to the ground and snaps her neck on impact.

While back stage, the X-Men find the Professor and are forced to knock him using simultaneous attacks. Cyclops then smashes all of Stryker's machines. Rallying his teammates, Cyclops points out that the only way to stop Stryker's organization is to take down Stryker himself -- no matter what it takes, a decision all the X-Men agree upon. They appear on stage and plead their case for mutants, debating their opposing view with Stryker on live television. When Stryker attempts to use Nightcrawler's demonic form to prove his point, Ariel pipes up and tells the audience that, despite Kurt's physical appearance, he is kind and generous and tells them all that if she had to choose between her friend or Stryker's god, it would be her friend. Stryker then pulls a gun and is about to shoot Kitty when one of the police on security detail shoots Stryker instead. The crowd is soon dispersed and the X-Men, who in the eyes of the law have done nothing wrong, are allowed to leave.

Epilogue Later, back at the mansion, the X-Men watch the news and see that public opinion of Stryker has pretty much been destroyed due to the fact that he almost shot a teenage girl on live television. With Xavier back in his right mind and the threat of Stryker's bigoted campaign over, Xavier and the X-Men offer Magneto to join the X-Men. However, Magneto cannot bring himself to join after everything that has happened. Magneto offers Xavier the chance to join him in his cause, but Xavier refuses and Magneto departs. Xavier thanks his students for saving him and their work that day. Alone with Storm, Cyclops points out that only through love and acceptance will humanity and mutants be able to live side by side together.

REVIEW

It is hard to say where this story goes in term of continuity... but it definitely happened (as the characters returned). The most interesting thing about this issue is how Cyclops gives better speeches than Xavier (I worry a bit when this happens, as sometimes it ends up being the writer and not the character, preaching). And while the conflict in question is believable (because we see these maniacs on tv all the time), as a piece of fiction, it offers very little for the reader to understand. We already know they are wrong in their way of thinking, but it is a better experience if we doubt it a little bit. Having the purifiers trying to kill humans as well as mutants... doesn’t do much for the antagonists. In fact, it takes the security guards a lot of time to react to Stryker’s homicide.

This novel explores Xavier’s dream, and ponders if Magneto was always right. In the end it doesn’t matter. Xavier is committed to his dream, and so are his X-Men (even Colossus), even if Magneto was right.

And of course Magneto is not right. But at least he made them think about it.

I do not like the coloring of the time for graphic novels. For some reason it looks too much like an illustration. However, I found the flashback sequence more believable done this way.

Lastly, I do not like the title of the novel. Which god loves? It was a safe title for Claremont, but it is not really implied in the story that “God” loves everyone. It is mentioned by Cyclops that Mutants have to be God’s creation as well... but the reverend talks about the old testament and the book of revelations most of the time... it seems to me like the new testament was omitted for effect. But never mind, I am an atheist.

Modern!Red Dead AU x Reader (Part 1/?)

((Let's go friends, lets get this bread.))

It’s always the era of art, isn’t it? You’re a college student that has found yourself living in the Northcountry of New York. Living here was like taking a step back in time almost a 100 years ago. You’re going to college for art, but you aren’t sure if thats a major for you.

There was a large bustling town surrounding your college, and another one across town. It was to big to be called a town, honestly, but two small to be called a city so it was somewere in between. There was plent to do. Movies, coffee shops, video game lounges, vape shops, open parks with art in them. It was beautiful.

The first person you meet is a young man and his friends laughing in one of the smoking gazebos. You were also going to smoke anyways so you suppose it was time to meet some new friends.

This is when you met Arthur Morgan, John Marston, and Charles Smith. They went to the college on the otherside of town for music... Which was funny because none of them looked like the musical type.

“Why are you wasting the air here and not at your own school?” You asked. John, the one that looked half way between a drug dealer and a drug addict, said, “Well... My girlfriend goes to school here. And we can’t smoke on campus at our school,” 

Oh. If anyone out of this odd bunch was anything normal, it was Charles. He was cool and quiet and didn’t say much other than, “Were are you from?” You told them how you lived about seven to eight hour from home. Turned out so did he. 

Arthur and John were locals. They’d grown up in the wild North country. The mountains of New York were such an odd place. Arthur didn’t talk much but he did talk about this place called Java Barn. “It’s a live music venue. It’s not actually in a barn. It’s in a old autobody shop on our campus. There’s a show tonight. You should come,” He was so stern when he talked. What a weirdo. 

“What's it like?” Charles told you it was a place were local musicans, students, and very underground and unknown bands played. It was a mix between and indoor slash outdoor music club. 

The Java Barn opened at 9:00pm but they told you to show up at 10:00

That’s when you got to meet everyone else. You thought this was a local student thing, but it turned out to be a wild and open event that any body could go to.

Found on the college campus across town stuck in a alley way between two low buildings, you found it. There had to be more than 200 people there. Scattered around in the alley while loud music blasted out of the open garage doors. 

You found the three pretty boys that you met earlier that day sitting way off to the side on a set of stairs that went to nowhere. They waved you over, John smiling and Charles getting up to greet you. They introduced you to the rest of their friends. 

There was a kid named Sean from Ireland who was far to drunk already. He was a drop out and didn’t want to go back home. So he lived with John and John’s girlfriend, Abigal, in an apartment in town. Abigal went to school for nursing, she said.

Charle’s was roommates with Arthur, who also lived in town. They had a third roommate who was a girl named Karen. She went to your school for criminal justice and she was a bit of a partier. She was also very very drunk and seemed to be gravitating towards Sean.

To your surprise you met one of your own fucking professors, It was Professor Van der Linde who taught your modern philosophy class, and your english Professor too! Mr. Mattews. You knew the two of them were friends, because you saw them always walking together in the hallways of your school, you didn’t know how good of friends though or that they were friends with students.

Was this a little unethical? No... No it couldn’t be. Right?

This party at the Java Barn was actully.... a lot of fun! You met so many people, drunk, stoned, sober, and they were all very nice. This little gang of people around the stairs off in the distance seemed like a big friend group.

There were other people too, a kid named Lenny who was in your art major. There was his friends Tilly and Mary-beth, and their friend Sadie who was a very loud and drunk lesbian who had to let everyone know who she was. You found out Tilly was also in the criminal justice major, and Mary-beth was in the english studies major. Sadie was to drunk to even communicate properly but someone told you she went to other college for psycology.

You also met some dropouts who still slugged around, named Bill and Micah who were fans of Dutch’s class and that was about it. There was also someone named Javiar but he didn’t seem interested in being friends with anyone really. 

You noticed other professors you had also at the gathering, even older people well into their golden years. It was so amazing and forigen to you. What on earth was this place that you had found?

They got you to drink, and smoke, and enjoy yourself. They were all so nice and you found yourself making friends very quickly. The music was loud and funny, it made you want to dance.

The girls all gathered together and laughed and giggled and dance and barked at any of the men that tried to squeeze in. You were dragged away by them to gossip in the bathroom. You’ve never had many friends, definetly no friends that were like this. 

You added everyone on snapchat, facebook, twitter, anything they had. It felt a little weird when Dutch and Hosea insisted that you refer to them by their names, and they gladly gave you their contact information.  

That night you walked home with Tilly and Abigal, they lived in the same dorm as you and didn’t even know it. It was beautiful walk because your campus was littered with nature trails seeing as it was in the middle of a forest. 

You didn’t have a roommate (lucky, the said) so when you got back to your half decorated room, you flopped down on your bed. You closed your eyes for a second, feeling tired but glad you took the risk and went out. Your phone was buzzing alive already. Your new friends hadn’t wasted a second texting you.

Smiling, ready for bed, you rolled over, still in the clothes you wore out and sunk into your bed, sleeping and waiting for what the next day had to bring.

Flufftober Day 22: City

“I didn’t know you could fly.”

Magnus’ hands paused in their deft journey across the control panel, turning towards the co-pilot’s seat.

The force of his full attention hit Alec as it always did, pinning him in place more securely than the safety harness he had just strapped himself into. Magnus was a force of raw nature, focused and beautiful and powerful enough to level cities if he so desired.

The effect was only somewhat ruined by the carefree smile that lit up his face.

“I invented the helicopter, you know.”

Alec rolled his eyes but he was laughing as he said, “No you didn’t.”

“No I didn’t,” Magnus agreed with a wink, shoulders swaying back and forth as much as they could within the confines of the safety harness.

Alec fought the urge to unclip his own chest restraints so that he could lean across the cockpit and grip those strong shoulders in his hands. He wanted to feel the muscles under his palms rock back and forth as he kissed that smile into a breathless gasp. It was the same way he felt whenever Magnus was happy. If he could just get close enough, he could burrow himself deep inside and never have to leave.

But if he did, they’d never get off the ground, and Magnus had been going on about taking them up into the sky for weeks. With a last flick of a few switches, the blades above them started to move, rumbling faster and faster until the air was whipped into a frenzy of howling noise.

Alec flipped his headset on, adjusting the speaker in front of his mouth. Despite the ear protection, the noise around them got even louder.

“Really though?” he asked, genuinely curious now. “When did you learn how to pilot one of these?”

Magnus’ voice came through the speakers loud and clear as they began to lift up into the air.

“I used to sneak onto an Air Force base. Very patriotic of me, I know.”

Somehow Alec doubted Magnus’ illicit activities had anything to do with pride in his adopted city, and said as much.

Magnus turned to look at him, eyes bright with wonder before focusing back on the sky. “For most of my life, air travel was only for birds. Not even magic had anything like it. When I first heard of a machine that could fly, I was fascinated. I had to see it for myself.”

He handled the controls with the same confidence he used while casting spells, hands steady and sure as he maneuvered the helicopter forward through the air. “I even owned a hot air balloon in the eighteen hundreds, you know,” he added.

“Somehow I can picture you in a giant balloon with a cocktail.”

Magnus huffed in amusement, turning the helicopter so they flew along the path of the river. Alec noticed he didn’t dispute the claim.

The city spread out below them as they rose higher, buildings of all shapes and sizes reaching like fingers up towards the sky on either side of them. Cutting through the urban landscape, the East River flowed like a snake out towards the horizon, broken into large pieces by jutting lines of bridge after bridge. Alec took it all in with wide eyes. The New York he knew was coated in darkness and grime, back alleys and nightclubs where demons lurked and blood was spilled. It was easy to forget that there was another side to it.

The most beautiful side of the city, shown to him by the most beautiful man in it. Pink and orange streaks of sunset glinted off the tips of Magnus’ hair, painting his profile and setting his skin ablaze with radiance. It lit him up, like the physical embodiment of how he lit up Alec’s life.

As they continued working their way up the edge of Manhattan, Magnus pointed out various places he had been or lived, always with a story to go along with it.

The prohibition bar near the Chrysler Building that Charles Lindbergh had visited while Magnus was singing on stage. The corner of Central Park South where Ragnor and Catarina had stolen a horse and proceeded to portal it into Magnus’ home, just to make him laugh. The museum that Magnus insisted stole his old belongings, no matter that they had been dug up centuries after he had abandoned them.

Alec studied the buildings below them, their lights just beginning to emerge from the deepening sunset, trying to see the city as Magnus did.

It was easy to forget that his boyfriend was far older than his youthful looks suggested. He had lived lifetimes, seen so much, done so many things. Ironic, since they almost fell apart before they even got started, due to those exact differences. But once Alec saw beyond the fortified walls Magnus showed the world—saw the person beneath the power and the extravagance and the historical name dropping—the years between them seemed to fall away.

Had Magnus been born mundane, he would have lived and died never having known a sight like this. He would have died, and Alec would never have met him.

The thought twisted Alec’s heart in his chest.

He didn’t need any other reason to love the magic beside the fact it was Magnus’. It was the power at his fingertips that lit his hands and obeyed his will, be it in battle or in bed. It was as much a part of him as the beating heart that lulled Alec to sleep, his head pillowed on Magnus’ strong chest. Or the little birth mark above his eyebrow that Alec loved to kiss first thing in the morning. It was his perfectly manicured hands that wielded a sword or staff or a fireball as deftly as he did a cocktail shaker.

Even if Alec didn’t love the magic for all those things, he would love it for this: the magic brought Magnus through the ages, right here to Alec’s side.

“You’ve lived through so much,” Alec said, voice barely above a whisper. The tensing of Magnus’ shoulders felt like an arrow in Alec’s heart and he could have kicked himself. He rushed to add, “It’s not a bad thing. I just mean there’s a lot.”

Magnus’ smile turned sad. “I’m a lot.”

Alec shook his head, then realized Magnus probably couldn’t see the gesture very well with the large ear protectors obscuring his peripheral vision. “That’s not what I meant,” he said. “Yeah, you’re a lot. But it’s a good a lot. I like all your parts.”

A huff of laughter came over the headset and Alec knew exactly what was coming. Magnus liked to deflect when he was truly uncomfortable.

“Well, Alexander, in that case, there’s one particular part of me—”

“I mean it,” Alec cut in, needing to say this. Not that he wasn’t also interested in that part of Magnus. Quite the opposite, and his plans for the later part of their evening proved as much. But this was too important to let slide.

Magnus always said things like this, like he didn’t believe Alec when he said that no much of Magnus could ever be too much. He hated when Magnus tried to make himself smaller, when he tried to trim off the aspects of himself he thought were too much.

Every time, it felt like a piece of Alec’s own heart was being torn out with it.

Magnus stared out the into the skyline fading into twilight, but Alec knew he wasn’t seeing the admittedly spectacular sight.

“Thank you, Alexander.” Magnus voice was low even over the headset, but there was something in his voice that gave Alec hope he was being heard. “I hope you know that I love all of your parts, too.”

“I do,” he said, and he meant it.

His heart fluttered at the memories the words brought forth. All the times Magnus took Alec’s bruised and battered hands into his own at the end of a long day. Prying his bow and arrows from his grasp and replacing it with fingers wreathed in warm magic. Sheltering the parts of him that Alec would rather forget existed, because Magnus loved with his whole heart and his whole heart loved Alec.

Alec loved him so much it hurt.

Sometimes he wondered how his heart didn’t physically jump from his own chest to lodge itself inside of Magnus, where it desperately wanted to live. If it took the rest of his life, he’d make Magnus see himself the way Alec saw him.

Beneath them, the last of the pink sky bled into hues of dark blue and a blanket of tiny flickering lights spread out across the ground around them.

Alec’s home wasn’t perfect, far from it. Even with all of the beauty there were patches of sadness and struggle and pain, all wrapped up in one perfect jewel of a package that Alec wouldn’t change for the world.

Not perfect, no, but perfect for him. There wasn’t a single thing Alec would change about Magnus, even if he could.

I’m a lucky soul, who holds your hand so tight

So, here’s my third oneshot that was also requested by the lovely @nessa007 I will admit that this was a challenge for me to write because I wanted to do a good job with it and I had an idea and it just wasn’t working, so I started over and it’s a lot better. Anyway, i’m not used to write danger/violence. All I have written has been fluff, so this took me out of my comfort zone, but that’s good because it helps me to expand my writing. Title is from “Won’t Stop” by OneRepublic

Prompt: Amy finds herself in danger while on a case and Jake is worried about her. 

It’s been a few weeks since Jake and Amy decided to start dating and Jake couldn’t be happier. He’s dating Amy Santiago. His partner. His friend. No, his best friend and ever since they decided to ‘screw light and breezy’ and just go for it, it’s been the best thing that has ever happened to him. He hopes Amy feels the same and considering that she hasn’t given up yet, he takes that as a good sign.

They woke up together, so naturally they go into work at the same time and hold hands while they are on the elevator. Once the doors open, they let go (so they keep the pda to a minimum and still maintain a certain level of professionalism) Charles of course doesn’t miss the PDA as they walk in and gives his opinion on their relationship, to which Amy rolls her eyes and Jake just ignores him.

As Charles goes back to his desk defeated, Amy focuses back on the case file in front of her. She’s been tracking this guy for years now and she has been searching for a lead. As she checks the file again, she finds the name of a previous employer to Moretti named Tony Richards.

Amy’s face turns up into a wide smile as she realizes this could be the lead she’s been looking for and could finally lead her to Moretti.

Jake notices her change in expression (since he is always glancing at her even though they are already together and he can do it without being weird now) and his expression changes to one of curiosity as he wonders why she is so happy over something besides him.

“What’s got you so happy?” He asks, making her jump.

Looking up from her file and giving Jake her attention, “You know that guy Moretti that I have been tracking for a while now? Well, I think I found a lead that can finally lead me to where he is.”

“That’s great, Ames.”

“Yeah, I’m going to talk to him and see if he knows where Moretti is staying.”

“By yourself? Maybe you should have Rosa go with you.”

Amy knows that Jake is saying this because he cares and wants to protect her, but she wants to do this on her own. It’s her case. What could happen? She’s just going to talk to this guy, it’s not like it’s actually Moretti.

“No, I want to do this myself. It’s my case and i’ve been tracking him for years, I want to be the one to find him. I appreciate your concern though.” Amy says as she grabs his hand and squeezes it gently.

“If anything happens, you’ll let me know, right?”

“Yes, Jake. You’ll be the first to know. It will be okay.” She says as she wraps him in her arms to give him a big hug.

As she ends the hug and grabs her stuff, Jake keeps his gaze on her as she heads to the elevator giving her a silent ‘Be careful’ and she mouths ‘I will’ before the doors close.

Amy meets up with Richards in a public place and he slips her the address to where Moretti has been staying. She says “Thanks” and decides to stakeout the building so she doesn’t miss him.

While she’s waiting for Moretti to show, her thoughts go to Jake. He was so concerned about her doing this on her own. They have only been together for a few weeks and the fact that he is so protective of her, makes her heart melt. He has always been a little protective of her, but now it means so much more because they are in a relationship. Relationship. She can’t believe she would ever say that she is dating Jake Peralta, but it’s true. It’s still very new, but she knows this has the potential to be amazing and she’s happier than she has ever been.

Amy is pulled out of her thoughts by a car door closing and looks up to see Moretti heading to the building. He looks around to see if anyone sees him and heads inside. Amy makes her way towards the building and when she’s inside, she sees Moretti going up the stairs, she pulls her gun and yells, “NYPD FREEZE!” Moretti starts running and Amy chases after him. After 5 flights, Amy lost him, but looks around and he’s hiding around the corner. She tries to stop him, but he’s too fast and grabs her and pulls her inside to his apartment.

Amy is shocked when she sees a shrine of pictures with eyes gouged out that say “Kill Amy Santiago” across it. The situation just became a lot more dangerous…

Back at the precinct, Jake is trying not to worry, but it’s Amy and as much as he knows she can handle it, he can’t shake the anxious feeling he has. His focus is no longer on the paperwork he has to do, but on his girlfriend of 2 weeks. He fidgets with his police badge as he thinks about how if she is hurt, he couldn’t stand her being in so much pain. He will do anything for her because, dare he say it so soon, but he loves her. He has for a long time, but he isn’t going to say that now because it is still too soon. Instead he tries to focus on the way Amy’s hair falls over her shoulders in waves when she wore it down for their first (official) date and how always cuddles closer to him on the couch or in bed because he radiates so much warmth. She’s his everything and it means so much more now that they are a couple, so the thought of her being in danger sends a shiver down his spine in the worst way.

Moretti has Amy pushed against the door to the apartment pointing the gun at her head. Through her jacket pocket, she tries texting Jake to let him know she’s in danger, hoping that Moretti doesn’t catch what she’s doing. Amy does it as quickly as she can without actually looking at her phone, so the words are probably all jumbled and she no sooner hits the ‘send’ button when Moretti notices her hand in her pocket and grabs her phone, throwing it across the room to send it falling to the ground, shattering.

“No one is coming to help you now.” He snarls grabbing her and making her sit in a chair he has in the middle of the room where he proceeds to tie and gag her. He leaves her there to stare at the wall of pictures that will be her fate if help doesn’t come soon. Please Jake, she silently prays. Hurry.

Trying to focus back on his work, he sees his phone screen light up with a new message and he opens it to reveal a message from Amy.

Amy Santiago: Situation just turned dangerous. Moretti has a shrine for me and wants me dead. His address is the building on 8th and main. Apartment 512. Please hurry.

Jake grabs his keys and pockets his phone and runs out of the precinct as fast as his legs will take him. He doesn’t even let the rest of them know that he left. His mind is on Amy and only Amy and he won’t stop until he finds her and knows she is okay. He drives as fast as can (within the law) barring traffic to get to Moretti’s building and before he knows it, he’s parked in the alley behind Amy’s car and heading to find his girlfriend.

He jumps out of the car and heads into the building, rushing up the five flights of stairs to the number Amy gave him in the text message. Once he’s near the door, he quietly approaches and pulls out his gun.

Jake bangs on the door, “NYPD open up!”

Moretti panics and unties Amy, grabbing her, he slowly opens the door hiding Amy behind it with the gun still pointed at her side.

Jake comes barreling in, “Where is she? Where’s Amy?”

Once the door is closed, Moretti grabs Amy and holds the gun to her temple. “Right here,” Moretti says.

Jake turns around immediately and sees the panic on Amy’s face. He can’t just pull her away from Moretti when there is a gun pointed at her and he can’t shoot at him because it might hit Amy, so he does the only thing he can do that Moretti won’t expect; he has to shoot Amy. That’s the last thing he wants to do, but he figures it’s the only way. He looks in her eyes silently asking if she trusts him and she nods, so he shoots downward and hits her leg.

She screams in pain and Moretti, not expecting that lets Amy go and she falls holding her leg in pain. Moretti tries to run, but Jake grabs him and throws him against the door, “That’s for trying to hurt Amy.” he says as he cuffs him.

He hears sirens outside and thinks the precinct must have called them when he ran out without letting anyone know what happened. As he opens the door to led Moretti out, he sees Rosa by the stairs.

“How did you know where to find me?”

“When you ran out without saying anything, I figured it was about Amy, so I called for backup, but it took us a bit to find the address and then I looked in the case file on Amy’s desk and we headed straight over.”

“Well, you got here just in time.” Jake hands Moretti over to Rosa and she leads him outside to the waiting vehicle.

When Jake gets back inside the apartment, he runs to Amy’s side apologizing for what he had to do.

“It’s okay, Jake. It was the only way and I trust you completely.”

Jake still can’t believe he has a woman as amazing as Amy Santiago as his girlfriend. She trusts him and she’s his best friend and he is just so glad she is okay, aside from being shot that is.

“Well, thank you for trusting me and i’m so glad that you are okay. I had a bad feeling about it, but I knew you wanted to handle it yourself.”

“I didn’t realize it would be this dangerous, but apparently he has been tracking me just like I have been with him, but I got him, with your help. We make a great team, like always.”

Jake takes her hands in his and presses a soft kiss to her lips conveying all the love he has for this amazing woman he gets to call his. She kisses back with just as much love and adoration and when they break apart, there foreheads touch, relishing in the moment. “We make the best team ever.”

Helping her up (so she doesn’t put any weight on her leg) he picks her up and they take the elevator down to the waiting ambulance. Amy could have been seriously injured or even killed, but this was just one dangerous situation in many that they will have to endure in the time as detectives and as long as they have the other by their side and always having their back, they can endure even the most dire of situations because life as detectives is never a boring one.

For centuries homosexuals have left their distinctive marks on Austrian arts, culture and politics, sometimes subtle, yet always noticeable. Often a gay visitor is confronted with the truth about an historic figure when they discover he or she was "family".

One tour commences at the Belvedere Palace, the summer residence of the gay Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), the other starts at the famous Vienna State Opera House which was built by architects who were both business and life partners. Each of these tours will give a fascinating retrospective of Vienna's gay past as you discover the city's current gay community hang-outs. Even Franz Schubert earns his place on the tour along with several other well known names from Austrian royalty.

The Ringstrasse boulevard-once the showcase of the monarchy-completely encircles the historic city center. The Austrian National Library is the country's major scientific library and the building was commissioned by Emporer Charles VI, with the structure completed in 1726 and fresco decoration continuing until 1730. The baroque State Hall is one of the most aesthetic historical libraries in the world. Together with marble floors and statues, nutwood bookcases housing about 200,000 books and fresco ceilings this is a breathtaking example of an eighteenth century baroque library which today is kept in immaculate condition. The sheer majesty of this building alone is worthy of the trip to Vienna.

Schonbrunn Palace plus the Imperial Apartments in the Hofburg was the summer residence of the Hapsburgs and is just a short fifteen minute drive from the old city. Of the total 1,441 rooms in the palace complex, today forty state rooms in the main building are open to the public. The surrounding grounds include architectural features such as the Gloriette, the Neptune Fountain, and the Roman Ruin which can be viewed in their historically authentic state. The Maze, Labyrinth and Privy Gardens occupy 2700 square meters with a range of playful activities to discover and explore. This is a World Cultural Heritage Site and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Vienna and one tour will make you realise how it earned this distinction.

The characteristic interconnected Museums Quartier features a breathtaking combination of architecture from many different eras. Here you will also find the modern structures of the Leopold Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. After the enchanting interiors some outdoor activities might be in order. The Naschmarkt (outdoor market) offers an exotic journey exploring everything that Austrians enjoy as local fare. Fruits and vegetables, meat and fish offer a symphony of color as you wander through the market stalls and alleys searching for whatever may be your fancy. The specialty vendors include home-made vinegars, oils, wines, a variety of breads (for which the Austrians are famous), pastries and other local delicacies which will inspire any palate. On the edge of the market is the popular gay Café Savoy which opens at 5PM daily, the perfect time to end your meandering amongst the merchant's stalls to enjoy a comfortable chair and a cocktail. This traditional Viennese coffeehouse dates back to the Imperial era which is immediately apparent when you encounter the plush furnishings and stucco walls. On Saturdays the Savoy also opens in the mornings when an eclectic flea market, popular with the gay community, takes place in the Naschmarkt.

Closer to the University you can find one of the brightest stars in the (coffee) skies over Vienna - the chic, gay Café Berg. Adjacent to the gay bookstore Lowenherz (Lionheart), this café has comfortable seating and giant windows affording a view for those who want to see and be seen. Open from 10am each day this is a popular café plus an excellent restaurant renowned for its Sunday brunches.

Bar hopping in Vienna will take you through a variety of small, charming establishments. If you've been shopping on Mariahilfer Strasse (one of the most popular and longest shopping streets in Vienna) the X Bar is located in a courtyard just off this street. Then take a step back in time for a special treat and be sure to visit Wiener Schokoladekonig the intimate old world chocolate shop of Wolfgang Leschanz.. Located on Freisingergasse 1 near St. Stephan's Cathedral where chocolate is an art form in the Viennese tradition of incomparable exquisite sweets. The Briley Brothers

The Briley Brothers (Anthony Ray, James Dryal and Linwood Earl) were responsible for a 7 month killing spree in Richmond, Virginia in 1979. The brothers were born into a stable 2-parent home in the Highland Park area of Richmond, Virginia. Linwood, Anthony and James were considered to be helpful, considerate kids who would mow lawns and help repair cars for neighbours. The boys collected exotic pets, including tarantulas, piranhas, and boa constrictors – it has been alleged that they engaged in zoosadism (cruelty to animals). Their father, James Briley, Sr., was so disturbed by his sons’ behaviour that he kept his own bedroom door padlocked on the inside overnight, but James Sr. was the only person the brothers ever feared.

In 1971 Linwood Earl Briley, 16 at the time, committed the first murder attributed to the brothers. Whilst home alone, he took aim with a rifle through his bedroom window and proceeded to shoot and kill Orline Christian, an elderly lady who lived across the street, while she was hanging out her laundry to dry. The death was believed to be due to natural causes until relatives noticed a small bloody mark under her armpit at the viewing and asked the funeral director to re-examine her body – he found a small caliber bullet wound. Police were called and began looking for the source of the gunshot. Whilst standing in Christian’s yard, a detective used a sheet of plywood to represent the victim’s body with a hole cut out to represent the bullet wound. Using this method he determined that the bullet came from the home across the alley – the Briley house. There, the murder weapon was discovered and Linwood confessed to the crime with little regard for the victim: “I heard she had heart problems, she would have died soon anyway.” As a result of this incident Linwood was sent to reform school to serve a 1-year sentence. At the same age James followed in his wake, sentenced to time in juvenile hall for firing at a police officer during a pursuit.

In 1979 the 3 brothers, along with accomplice Duncan Meekins, began a 7 month series of random murders that terrified the city – the first attack occurred on March 12, when Linwood knocked on the door of William and Virginia Bucher in Henrico County. Linwood claimed that he needed to use the telephone due to car trouble, a ruse he used to force his way into the home. He held the couple at gunpoint before waving Anthony inside. The 2 brothers tied up the couple and robbed the home, picking each room clean of valuables before dousing it with kerosene. As the brothers left they threw a match onto the fuel. The 2 took their stolen loot (a television, CB radio and jewellery), packed it into the trunk and dove away. William Bucher managed to free himself and his wife from their restraints and they escaped just before the house became engulfed in flames. They were the sole survivors of the Briley Brothers’ rampage. 9 days later, vending machine serviceman Michael McDuffie was assaulted, murdered and robbed in his home. On April 9, the brothers followed 76-year-old Mary Gowen across town from her babysitting job to her home. They raped her and murdered her, escaping with many of her valuables. The gang spotted 17-year-old Christopher Philips hanging around near Linwood’s parked car on July 4, and believed he may have been attempting to steal it. The gang surrounded him and dragged him into a nearby backyard where the 3 brothers wrestled him to the ground. When Philips screamed for help, Linwood killed him by dropping a cinderblock onto his skull. On September 14 DJ John “Johnny G.” Gallaher was performing at a South Richmond nightclub. When he stepped outside between sets for a cigarette break, he met the Brileys, who had been cruising around all night, unsuccessfully looking for a victim. They decided to lie in wait for whoever would step out of the nightclub first. Gallaher was assaulted by Linwood and shoved into the trunk of his own car. He was driven out to Mayo Island in the middle of the James River, near the remnants of an abandoned paper mill. There, the brothers removed him from the trunk and shot him at point blank range in the head. His body was dumped in the river and his remains were discovered 2 days later. When arrested months later, Linwood was wearing a ring he had stolen off Gallaher’s hand.

On September 30, Mary Wilfong, a 62-year-old private nurse, was followed home to her apartment and surrounded by the brothers. Linwood beat her to death with a baseball bat, before entering the apartment with the others and robbing it of valuables. 5 days later, just 2 blocks from the Briley home, 79-year-old Blanche Page and her 59-year-old lodger Charles Garner were murdered by the brothers – Page was bludgeoned to death and Garner was fatally assaulted with a number of instruments, including a baseball bat, 5 knives, a pair of scissors, and a fork. The scissors and fork were discovered embedded in Garner’s back. The final murders occurred at the home of Harvey Wilkerson, a long-time friend of the brothers. On October 19, despite telling a judge earlier that day that he intended to keep out of trouble due to his parole, James led his brothers and Meekins on the prowl for a victim. When Wilkerson saw the brothers walking down the street, he instinctively ran into his the house he shared with 5-month-pregnant wife Judy Barton, 23, and 5-year-old son Harvey, and locked his door. The brothers saw this, and deliberately went to his door. Terrified about what may happen if he refused them, Wilkerson let the gang in. Both adults were overpowered, bound and gagged. Linwood assaulted Judy in the kitchen, raping her in hearing distance of the others, with Meekins carrying on the assault. Linwood  dragged Judy into the living room, rummaged through the property for valuables, and left the house. The 3 remaining gang members (Anthony, James and Duncan) covered the 2 victims with sheets. James told Meekins, “you’ve got to get one”, whereupon he took a pistol and shot Wilkerson in the head. James shot Barton to death. Police happened to be in the area at the time, and later saw the gang running down the street at speed but didn’t know where the shots had come from. The bodies weren’t discovered until 3 days later but the brothers were all arrested soon afterwards.

During police interrogation Meekins was offered a plea agreement in return for turning state’s evidence against the Brileys – he took the offer, providing full details of the crime spree. As a result, Duncan Meekins escaped the death penalty and was incarcerated at a Virginia prison away from the brothers. As part of the plea agreement he received a life sentence plus 80 years, which at the time of conviction meant he would be eligible for parole after serving just 12-15 years. Anthony Briley received a single life sentence with parole eligibility due to his limited involvement in the killings. As a result of Virginia’s “triggerman statue,” both James and Linwood were given numerous life sentences for the murders committed during the spree but only faced capital charges in the cases where they had physically killed the victims themselves. Linwood was sentenced to death for the abduction and murder of John Gallaher and James received 2 death sentences – one for the murder of Judy Barton and the other for that of her son Harvey. Both brothers were sent to death row at Mecklenburg Correctional Center in early 1980. On May 31, 1984, Linwood and James Briley helped led a six inmate escape from Virginia’s death row at Mecklenburg Correctional Center. During the early moments of the escape, both Brileys wanted to kill the captured guards by dousing them with rubbing alcohol and lighting a match, but Willie Lloyd Turner, a fellow death row inmate, stepped in James’s way and wouldn’t let him. Cop killer Wilbert Lee Evans stopped Linwood from raping a female nurse. The plan was to escape to Canada – 2 inmates (Lem Tuggle  and Willie Jones) almost succeeded, reaching Vermont before being captured at gunpoint by police. The group was held at the Marble Valley Correctional Facility in Rutland before being extradited back to Virginia. After splitting off from the other 2 inmates left in Philadelphia, the Brileys went to live near an uncle in the north of the city. They were captured on June 19 by a heavily armed group of FBI agents and police who found their location after placing wiretaps on their uncle’s phone line. Both brothers were executed in the electric chair at the Virginia State Penitentiary in Richmond – Linwood on October 12, 1984 and James on April 18, 1985. Linwood was survived by a son, Norman Laquan Ampy, who would later serve time in prison for bank robbery and died in 2015. James is survived by 3 daughters who live in Richmond. James and Linwood are buried at the Council cemetery in Bethel, North Carolina. Youngest brother Anthony is still incarcerated in Virginia’s corrections system and comes up for parole consideration every few years – to date, all applications have been denied.
