Fopps would like to ask you to make Rain Man gifs, specifically of the scene in the airport(?) when he looks extra short? For reference, lol.
I did save Rain Man on my hard drive after I watched it for my TC marathon last summer, I just haven't gotten around to giffing it yet. But I'll be happy to make Fopps and the rest of the server some Charlie Babbit gifs sometime tonight or this weekend!

Russian doll put “I thought if I worked hard enough, if I kept putting the time in, if I kept my head down, you know, did everything right that this aching gnawing feeling of being an absolute failure would just go away” and “I look at you now, chasing down death at every corner and, sweetheart, where is that gorgeous piece of you pushing to be a part of this world” in back to back scenes
did they want me to cry

i saw your post about seeking out art made by women.. do you have any recs?? ik its a hard q to answer so i understand if you dont have time!!! <3
absolutely! this is such a broad question so i’m going to go with the films that i like/want more people to watch, but if you want a more specific genre or time period let me know.
a new leaf (1971, elaine may) is the funniest film of all time and my favorite film. jeanne dielman (1975, chantal akerman) is the greatest film that has ever been made. these are my two favorite films by women and i think everyone should see them.
in no particular order, these are the films that have had a huge impact on me and came to me at the right time in my life: mikey and nicky (1976, elaine may), pariah (2011, dee rees), but i’m a cheerleader (1999, jamie babbit), wendy and lucy (2008, kelly reichardt), cameraperson (2016, kirsten johnson), obvious child (2014, gillian robespierre).
these are the films that i think everyone should watch, aka “my canon”: any short films by alice guy-blaché (youtube is your friend!) but especially falling leaves. shoes (1916, lois weber), mabel’s strange predicament (1914, mabel normand) (we wouldn’t have the charlie chaplin we know today without mabel normand!), the adventures of prince achmed (1926, lotte reininger), the smiling madame beudet (1923, germaine dulac), merrily we go to hell (1932, dorothy arzner), mädchen in uniform (1931, leontine sagan), meshes of the afternoon (1943, maya deren), mary ellen bute’s animated shorts, outrage (1950, ida lupino), shirley clarke’s dance films, le bonheur (1965, agnès varda), the house is black (1963, forugh farrokhzad), wings (1966, larisa shepitko), daisies (1966, vera chytilova), wanda (1970, barbara loden), i am somebody (1970, madeline anderson), lady with a sword (1971, kao pao-shu), betty tells her story (1972, liane brandon), hester street (1975, joan micklin silver), dyketactics (1974, barbara hammer), illusions (1982, julie dash), losing ground (1982, kathleen collins), blood diner (1987, jackie kong), near dark (1987, kathryn bigelow), the piano (1993, jane campion), daughters of the dust (1991, julie dash), the watermelon woman (1996, cheryl dunye), and SEE WE ARE NOT EVEN INTO THE 2000S YET!
this list may seem overwhelming. do not let it. i went long and detailed to prove a point, which is that we have been making films in every decade and on every continent, in every genre. my lists have blind spots! i have my own biases.
my advice to you and whoever else reads this is to ask yourself what genres you gravitate towards and what kinds of films you like, what decades you love, what international cinema you find interesting, and then start googling! go to letterboxd! watch some of my recs, or completely disregard them. you know your taste the best, and i guarantee there’s a million films by women you’ll love. for every film i put on here i left out FIVE similar ones.
i’m happy to give more tailored recommendations if you’d like, but this is a really broad list covering a lot of film history. dig in! see what you like and let me know what speaks to you! godspeed and have a blast! i wish i could see all these films again.

RAIN MAN- 1988 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tumblr media
Tom Cruise plays Charlie Babbit, a self centred and selfish guy who runs a shady car garage. He finds out his father has passed away and travels to his funeral. He describes to his girlfriend Susanna they had a very strained relationship and that his father was to blame.
He discovers his father has only left him a car in the will and the $3million dollar estate is going to someone else.
Charlie finds out he has a severely autistic brother Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) who was institutionalized when he was 2. Raymond is a genius with numbers and memory but cant communicate properly or understand emotion.
Charlie abducts Raymond and takes him back to Los Angeles, he says he will only return him for his half of the estate. While travelling back to L.A, Charlie is met with many complications as a result of Raymonds autism but also starts to understand him and care for him.
Excellent movie directed by Barry Levinson.
Rain Man won several academy awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman.
The scene where they count cards at a casino is legendary.
Both main actors were excellent and bounce off each other so well. Especially towards the end of the movie when they get along a bit more.
Was originally going to be directed by Martin Brest who dropped out after a disagreement with Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman wanted him to be an autistic savant whereas Martin Brest insisted he be mentally challeneged instead. Considering how Martin Brest later portrayed disbled people in Gigli, Rain Man really dodged a bullet.

J Fic Novels for your Weary Soul
A compilation of J Fic novels as compiled by me, mags. Expect more to come, because I love so many j fic novels but I can only summarize about five before I get exhausted...
Also please ignore the fact that I am really bad at describing these, I just didn't want to copy/paste descriptions from the internet because these books are all very important to me
Tumblr media
Floors - Patrick Carman
Look, this book was an icon of my elementary school days. It's about a boy who's dad works maintenence at a super wacky hotel where every floor has a different theme. The mystery begins when a series of cryptic boxes are left for Leo, (the boy) and he follows them to find secret floors and interesting puzzles. There's a life size pinball machine, a cast of wacky characters, an elevator called the Double Helix that rides like a roller coaster, and a healthy helping of ducks :)

Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library - Chris Grabenstein
This book is literally an escape room set in a library, what more could you want in a j fic novel? The summary on the Anapolis Valley Libraries website (which, oddly, is nowhere near where I live, but was the first search result) says it's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets Night at the Museum" and I wholly agree. It's about a board game obsessed boy named Kyle who wins a spot as one of the twelve kids who get to spend the night in the brand new town library, which was built by Kyle's hero Luigi Lemoncello, the most creative board game maker in the world. However when morning comes, the library doors remain locked *gasp* and tge kids must solve riddles and luzzles throughout the library to find the hidden escape route! 10/10 literally grabbed my attention and didn't let me go until I finished reading it.

Free Baseball - Sue Corbett
I love baseball and books about baseball, so this book was an instant favorite of mine. As an infant, Felix and his mother escaped from Cuba to Florida. Felix is sad that he doesnt know much about his father, but what he does know is that he is a famous baseball player back in their home country. When Felix wins a ticket to a minor league game he is thrilled, hoping one if the players might be Cuban and kniw his father. At the game he wanders into the locker room and is mistaken for the team's new batboy. Felix then stows away in the teams luggage compartment, anx rides with them to their clubhouse across the state. The team breaks their losing streak, the team's manager has a big heart and a sad past, and Felix's mother opens up about their past. It's touching, funny, and filled to the brim with baseball.

Love Ruby Lavender - Deborah Wiles
This one has chickens :D Ruby's life was going pretty great, that is until her grandma decides to spend the summer in Hawaii. Without her. Ruby is sure the summer will be a total bust without her best friend, but it turns out that maybe it won't be. Ruby makes new friends, saves a play, writes letters to her grandma, and finally stops blaming herself for her grandfather's death. This book is sweet, touching, and utterly hilarious. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will fall in love with the chickens.

Tuck Everlasting - Natalie Babbit
Probably my all time favorite book, I've read it several times and I still cry. Twelve year old Winnie Foster is a sheltered little girl living in Treegap New Hampshire, who wants nothing mire than to escape the confines of her family's white picket fence and live a little. When Winnie finally explores her family's woods, she meets a family with a secret. The Tucks have had water from a spring in Winnie's parents' wood, and now they are immortal. Winnie finds herself with a new best friend, and a difficult choice. Will she drink from the spring, or will she return to life as normal. *book reviewer voice* Tuck Everlasting is a touching tale dealing with friendship, adventure, and immortality. *back to regular voice* Oh! There's also a guy in a yellow suit who wants to bottle up and sell the water.
P.S. there is also a musical adaptation of Tuck Everlasting, and it is SO GOOD
