#chase and daphne

chase just laughed at her comment and shook his head "i imagine they make quite a bit." he thought about their own story, how that could fit a romance story. or at least a failed romance story, since in their story he didn't get the girl… except he did of course. he got rachel, daphne just wasn't the girl for him, he was meant to meet rachel. "well hopefully there's some good stories in auditing, that will inspire you." he teased before his face turned a bit serious. "no but seriously, i believe in you. you'll get there." he said as he stopped walking for a second to just look at her, to convey to her he was being serious. "you're strong daphne. and you're good at getting what you want because you work for it. and you deserve it." he said with a little smile. "and seriously if you do make romance novels and make a lot of money, don't forget me. i have a lot of student loans." he had to end with a joke, couldn't let things turn to serious as he started walking with her again.

"thanks." chase said with a little nod, looking down at the ground, not a guy who managed to glow in compliments when he was given them. made him feel weird, and made him blush. "well, i don't know about that. maybe she'll make it big and leave me for a big, hot and hunky actor." he joked, knowing that rachel wasn't like that at all. "yeah, she is." chase mused with a smile. "that's sort of how it happened, you know we were working on the shorts for a whole day and for a whole day i was filming her because it was my day to hold the camera, and at the end of the day… i didn't want to stop. i wanted to keep looking at her through a lens… and i got to, just… with my own." he said as he pointed to his eye and rolled his eyes playfully at himself. "i know it's cheesy, but… it really did feel like a movie you know? and we hung out and things were just easy… and that was really great." chase had appreciated that, after everything he had gone through with daphne, being with rachel it just happened, and he didn't need to do a lot. she liked him back. "mostly drama shorts, some comedic stuff, but things that are easy on a low budget. why do you want to star in one? be an extra?" he said with a little cheeky smile.

only. only a year. if only he knew how long that felt to her. she attempted to brush it off, a small bubble of laughter escaping her. there was no denying that it felt nice in a way, to have him back. despite the anxious and the tension, mostly from her side, there was a sliver of excitement that thought maybe they could be friends again. "hey now," she then gently shoved her arm into his, her smile growing as she spoke. "i love those crappy romance novels. do you know how much money some of these authors make?" not that money was the end goal - but it was nice, to say the least. but she wanted more, she knew she did. wanted a voice, really. "i'll get there eventually, i know it. for now i'm just doing this lame auditing job. it's so mundane it's not even funny - but, it's all remote so what do i really care while i figure things out? pays the bills."

she felt even more embarrassed to admit to her tame, lackluster job when he mentioned working for a studio. damn, life really was nice to him after the shit show she caused. jealousy, however, wasn't a good look on her and she consciously had to remind herself of that. "wow...," she mumbled, looking forward for a moment. "that's insane, chase. really. that's like, exactly what you need to be doing. you got a foot in the door... it's only a matter of time before your name is rolling through the credits, i bet. i'm proud of you, i really am." she smiled at him as he mentioned his girlfriend again and even more as he explained that she was an aspiring actress. "so what you're saying is you two are about to become hollywood's next big it couple?" she chuckled. "that's nice the two of you have that common ground. she starring in your shorts?" daphne kept it light, trying her hardest. "it sounds like things are going really great. what kind of movies are you and your friends making?"

they had been drinking a lot and they were currently having their time of their lives as they were sitting on daphne's bed. they had been friends for a long time, but chase had been in love with her for a long time. and it was hard not to feel those feelings as they were so close to each other and she was smiling and making him feel things. "god, you are just so dumb." chase said letting out a little chuckle as he shook his head, daphne having just let out one of the stupidest jokes he had ever heard. and that's when chase noticed how close they were, their faces inches from each other and his smile faltered a little as he looked into daphne's eyes. "so dumb." he repeated, but now in a whisper as he took in daphne. maybe it was the alcohol, maybe it was his feelings that couldn't be contained anymore, but chase leaned slowly forward and placed his lips on daphne, kissing her like it was all he had ever wanted to do.

it hurt chase to see her like this, but he had spent so much time focusing on daphne and making her happy, it was time for him to put himself first for once. and that wasn't her fault, it was his. he wanted to give in as the begging and pleading came, but he knew he had to stay strong. perhaps it would have been better if they hadn't talked at the party, maybe they would just continue avoiding each other without having to actually talk about what had happened. chase slowly raised his body from the couch "you can't." he said in a low voice as he stood up, squeezing his eyes shut as the pain hit him over and over again for every step he took towards her. "it's okay daphne." chase said as he had finally made it in front of her, grabbing her arm so she would stop pacing and look at him. he had a sad look on his face, he couldn't help it, he was upset too. he just wrapped his arms around her and hugged her. his hands stroking her back up and down, the tears in his eyes threatening to unleash. "we don't have a choice." chase said simply as he pulled his head back to look over his friend's eyes, that beautiful face that had pulled him in, his gaze wandered down to her lips, wanting to kiss her just one last time. but he wasn't going to do that, instead he planted a soft kiss on her forehead. "bye daphne." there wasn't any point extending the pain, and he needed rest. a lot of rest to get over this.

as if he had physically reached inside of her, daphne felt her breath escaping her, leaving her empty. her throat tightened with each passing word that came out of his mouth, and before she knew it, she was looking at him, pleading with him, through watery, glassy eyes. she wanted to scream no, that this wasn't fair, that he was her best friend. her person. lifeline, even. and now they had to figure out who they were? without one another? she felt sick, her mouth gagging at the realization hitting her, at the lump forming inside of her. "no, no chase." her hands fell from him and she rose to the air, her body pacing around the room, searching for anything that could possibly take this away. but she came up short and all she was left with was the weight of his words. "we've been best friends for so long, how can we just not talk? how can we - i mean, no! no you don't want that chase. i know you don't. i can fix this, okay? i can make it go back to the way things were, i can -" daphne's words were spilling out faster and faster, hands wiping around the air, like she was actively shaking off the idea that she couldn't do anything to fix this, when it had been her who ruined everything to begin with. "chase please, please don't do this to us. please."
