I have to pre-record myself answering questions for this freaking job application. I hate this soooo much
It's just for a 2 day a week shit kicker job at the supermarket down the road.... Why can't I just walk 200 meters to the store for an in person group interview instead??? Why are u making me set up a webcam and make a video.... UGH
#vent#Moose talk#This is after they made me do a 'chat' interview that was actually a questionnaire#But with UI elements on the website that made it look like a chat window/text message#With the other end 'typing' out responses#(a bot copy pasting a script in)#No human interaction#Just give me a questionnaire page next time!#Fuck your stupid marketing shit#It's psychotic tbh!#It also gave me an Ai generated personality test based on my responses#(yes I'm serious)

I have been on a Willy Wonkified journey today and I need y'all to come with me
It started so innocently. Scrolling Google News I come across this article on Ars Technica:
At first glance I thought what happened was parents saw AI-generated images of an event their kids were at and became concerned, then realized it was fake. The reality? Oh so much better.
On Saturday, event organizers shut down a Glasgow-based "Willy's Chocolate Experience" after customers complained that the unofficial Wonka-inspired event, which took place in a sparsely decorated venue, did not match the lush AI-generated images listed on its official website.... According to Sky News, police were called to the event, and "advice was given."
Thing is, the people who paid to go were obviously not expecting exactly this:

But I can see how they'd be a bit pissed upon arriving to this:

It gets worse.
"Tempest, how could it possibly--"
source of this video that also includes this charming description:
Made up a villain called The Unknown — 'an evil chocolate maker who lives in the walls'
There is already a meme.
Oh yes, the Wish.com Oompa Loompa:
Who has already done an interview!
As bad (and hilarious) as this all is, I got curious about the company that put on this event. Did they somehow overreach? Did the actors they hired back out at the last minute? (Or after they saw the script...) Oddly enough, it doesn't seem so!
Given what I found when poking around I'm legit surprised there was an event at all. Cuz this outfit seems to be 100% a scam.
The website for this specific event is here and it has many AI generated images on it, as stated. I don't think anyone who bought tickets looked very closely at these images, otherwise they might have been concerned about how much Catgacating their children would be exposed to.
Yes, Catgacating. You know, CATgacating!
I personally don't think anyone should serve exarserdray flavored lollipops in public spaces given how many people are allergic to it. And the sweet teats might not have been age appropriate.
Though the Twilight Tunnel looks pretty cool:
I'm not sure that Dim Tight Twdrding is safe. I've also been warned that Vivue Sounds are in that weird frequency range that makes you poop your pants upon hearing them.
Yes, Virginia, these folks used an AI image generator for everything on the website and used Chat GPT for some of the text! From the FAQ:
Q: I cannot go on the available days. Will you have more dates in the future? A: Should there be capacity when you arrive, then you will be able to enter without any problems. In the event that this is not the case, we may ask you to wait a bit.
Fear not, for this question is asked again a few lines down and the answer makes more sense.
Curious about the events company behind this disaster, I took myself over to the homepage of House of Illuminati and I was not disappointed.
I would 100% trust these people to plan my wedding.
This abomination of a website is a badly edited WordPress blog filled with AI art and just enough blog posts to make the casual viewer think that it's a legit business for about 0.0004 seconds.
Their attention to detail is stunning, from how they left up the default first post every WP blog gets to how they didn't bother changing the name on several images, thus revealing where they came from. Like this one:
With the lovely and compact filename "DALL·E-2024-01-30-09.50.54-Imagine-a-scene-where-fantasy-and-reality-merge-seamlessly.-In-the-foreground-a-grand-interactive-gala-is-taking-place-filled-with-elegant-guests-i.png"
"Concept.png" came from the same AI generator that gets text almost, but not quiiiiiite right:
There are a suspicious number of .webp images in the uploads, which makes me think they either stole them from other sites where AI "art" was uploaded or they didn't want to pay for the hi-res versions of some and just grabbed the preview image.
The real fun came when I noticed this filename: Before-and-After-Eventologists-Transformation-Edgbaston-Cricket-Ground-1024x1024-1.jpg and decided to do a Google image search. Friends, you will be shocked to hear that the image in question, found on this post touting how they can transform a boring warehouse into a fun event space, was stolen from this actual event planner.
Even better, this weirdly grainy image?
From a post that claims to be about the preparations for a "Willy Wonka" experience (we'll get to this in a minute), is not only NOT an actual image of anyone preparing anything for Illuminati's event, it is stolen from a YouTube thumbnail that's been chopped to remove the name of the company that actually made this. Here's the video.
If you actually read the blog posts they're all copypasta or some AI generated crap. To the point where this seems like not a real business at all. There's very specific business information at the bottom, but nothing else seems real.
As I said, I'm kinda surprised they put on an event at all. This has, "And then they ran off with all our money!" written all over it. I'm perplexed.
And also wondering when the copyright lawyers are gonna start calling, because...

This post explicitly says they're putting together a "Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory Experience" complete with golden tickets.
Somewhere along the line someone must have wised up, because the actual event was called "Willys Chocolate Experience" (note the lack of apostrophe) and the script they handed to the actors about 10 minutes before they were supposed to "perform" was about a "Willy McDuff" and his chocolate factory.
As I was going through this madness with friends in a chat, one pointed out that it took very little prompting to get the free Chat GPT to spit out an event description and such very similar to all this while avoiding copyrighted phrases. But he couldn't figure out where the McDuff came from since it wasn't the type of thing GPT would usually spit out...
Until he altered the prompt to include it would be happening in Glasgow, Scotland.
You cannot make this stuff up.
But truly, honestly, I do not even understand why they didn't take the money and run. Clearly this was all set up to be a scam. A lazy, AI generated scam.
Everything from the website to the event images to the copy to the "script" to the names of things was either stolen or AI generated (aka stolen). Hell, I'd be looking for some poor Japanese visitor wandering the streets of Glasgow, confused, after being jacked for his mascot costume.
HE LIVES IN THE WALLS, Y'ALL.

The opposite of wiki isn’t discord, it’s encyclopedia dramatica.
incorrect.
encyclopedia dramatica is publicly available through a web browser without an account, and not locked behind a proprietary piece of software to access.
Discord, on the other hand, is the hand that pulls the suffocating rag of inaccessibility over the face of anyone trying to learn anything regarding any niche online phenomenon.
JUST MAKE A FORUM FOR YOUR FIGHTING GAME COMMUNITY!!! JUST PUT YOUR PROGRAMS AND SCRIPTS ON GITHUB!!! JUST HOST YOUR FILES ON MEDIAFIRE OR MEGAUPLOAD OR SOMETHING!!
i shouldnt have to announce my presence to everyone any time i join a server for a second to download one file! i dont like that i have to insert my digital footprint somewhere just because the information there isn't available anywhere else!
STOP MAKING DISCORD SERVERS WHEN YOU SHOULD BE MAKING WEBSITES!!! STOP USING A CHAT CLIENT THAT'S GETTING WORSE WITH EVERY UPDATE AS A LESS HELPFUL AND LESS ACCESSIBLE INTERNET BROWSER!!!

We were talking on my server the other day about a sort of "performance prose" piece, a way to have a work of fiction that takes place within the digital world. I'm a fan of epistolary novels, and this is an epistolary novel that would have a time component to it.
Basically, the idea is that you set up a discord server, make all the channels read-only, then have a "performance" where bots are talking to each other according to a script. (You could also do this via roleplay, but I think that would be worse.) All these bots are "reading their lines" in these channels, forming a coherent story that's told entirely through text messages, but also, importantly, through the timing of when messages are sent, through when the messages are edited, through mutes and bans and slow modes.
It would all be realtime, that's part of the gimmick. I think it would be best if it was actually on discord, mostly because I think that's a better gimmick than having a javascript thing on some separate dedicated website.
There are lots of options for how you'd do it. Time is one major consideration: an hourlong "performance" as the bots do their scripted actions is interesting, nice and tight, more like a movie than anything else, something you sit down for as a dedicated viewing "experience". But at the other extreme, it could be as long as a week (more than that is probably impractical). Since it's in real time, that means that people actually need to check in and keep up with it, and you can actually miss things, catching them only in the backlog.
In practical terms, I think you'd only want ~10 characters and another ~20 secondary characters, the "main chatters" and the people who come in for a few lines every now and then. This is just a format in which the writing would take place, you'd want to figure out what the plot is, what it's "about", if it's about more than just internet/online culture.
So it's a stage play, but it takes place within a chat client of some kind, and has its own rhythms, and because we're using bots and not humans, and because we're using a format that has verisimilitude, we can do cool things with it.
And you might be asking "well wait, you're writing a script, just write a chat log instead, that's a relatively normal thing to write and read" but I dunno, there's something that's magical about doing it "live", witnessing a quiet conversation in the middle of the night, seeing the whole server get embroiled in a flashpoint issue, watching these characters get revealed in ways large and small.

CHAT CONTROL STILL ALIVE
Original tweet As more meetings are planned with the potential adoption of Chat Control (without any fixes!! Not even adressing the huge issue it is, like EU citizens not being allowed to send videos, pictures,or links anymore via their private messages/emails if they refuse to be scanned by artificial intelligence ??) We need help to help spread the word, as with recent snap elections among some EU countries, its unclear if some countries will keep opposing Chat Control. I'm in the process of building a Linktree to gather all useful links to help fight against it, its still a work in progress as of now. I am also looking for translation of scripts against Chat Control. https://linktr.ee/stopchatcontrol
You can also go to Patrick Breyer's website for more actions and infos https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/posts/chat-control/#WhatYouCanDo
Come join our Discord server against it,we are tyring to organize actions against it. Even if you don't speak english everyone is welcome,we need more people ! https://discord.com/invite/e7FYdYnMkS

For some reason, I can’t see the image in Toy Box so I’ll try to brighten it…
Ok I can’t see it for some reason so I’m just going to cheat and go to Tumblr and Reddit…
I also heard that there is a secret Wally audio, but I’ll find it soon
Ok the first one I found has “/ringring” at the end of the link for the main website
The distortion in the beginning is actually kinda scaring me…
Wally sounds a bit angry…I’m scared…
I think he’s tweaking a bit…
Home…
I’m worried about Wally…Is he ok?
Next is “/revengemessagebeware” at the end of the link for the main website
THE DISTORTION SCARED ME WHAT THE
So we’re looking at the sky now…And it’s a live-action sky…
And the people talking are Julie and Frank…
Omg the video cuts to green plants…
The video then cuts to a bud? It kinda looks like a cactus lol
The video then cuts to another random plant again…
The video then cuts to a weird looking flower…
I don’t know what that flower is but it looks weird…
There’s distortion again at the end…
Next is “/innocenceconstancyaspell” at the end of the link for the main website
There’s distortion at the beginning again…
The people talking are Julie and Frank again…
So we’re looking at some flowers…
Now the video cuts to another plant…
Now the video cuts to that weird-looking flower again…
Now the video cuts to leaves from a tree…
Now the video cuts to a weird-looking bud…Is it from that same weird flower or a different one?
Now the video cuts to the sky again…
Julie stopped talking that even Frank is noticing it a bit…
Now it cuts to a green bush? Another plant?
Now it cuts to the weird-looking flower again…
There’s a shadow looming over the weird flower and there’s distortion again at the end…
Next is “/regardforgetfulnesssilence” at the end of the link for the main website
There’s distortion at the beginning as usual…
The person talking is only Julie this time…
So we’re looking at that weird flower again…
Now it cuts to sunlight shining through the leaves of a tree…
OMG JULIE PUPPET HAND REVEAL
Now we cut to the sky again…
Now we cut to plants covered by a shadow? I don’t know what to describe it…
Now we cut to the weird flower again…
Now we cut to plants showing a small mountain?
SHE NEVER EVEN MENTIONED EDDIE??? WHAT???
Julie and Frank lore??? She’s talking about how they met…
Now we cut to another plant…
Julie starts speaking in a normal voice…It’s not her usual happy tone…
Now we cut to flowers…
Now Julie is back to speaking in her usual happy tone…
Now we cut to that weird flower again…
OMG WALLY’S VOICE AT THE END OF THE VIDEO???
Next is “/temptationdreamshope” at the end of the link for the main website
There’s distortion at the beginning as usual…
Now we cut to sunlight shining through the trees…
There’s a voice but it sounds unfamiliar…It is not one of the neighbors or one of the side characters we met before…
We cut to the weird flower and hear Julie’s voice again…
We cut back to sunlight shining through the trees again and hear that unfamiliar voice again…
We cut back to the weird flower and hear Julie’s voice again…
We cut to some flowers…
We cut to another bunch of flowers…
So the play Julie and the others did was “Sweet Briar” which is from one of the storybooks earlier…
We cut to sunlight and heard that unfamiliar voice again…
Now we cut back to the same bunch of flowers and hear Julie’s voice again…
Now we cut to the sky again…
We cut to sunlight and heard that unfamiliar voice again…
Now we cut to plants covered by a shadow again and hear Julie’s voice again…
We cut to sunlight and heard that unfamiliar voice again…
Now we cut to plants showing a small mountain and hear Julie’s voice again…
We heard that unfamiliar voice again and cut to sunlight…
We cut back to the weird flower and hear Julie’s voice again…
We heard that unfamiliar voice and cut to sunlight…But the voice seems like it’s panicking…
We cut back to the weird flower and hear Julie’s voice again…Julie seems aware of the voice…
Julie’s voice sounds soft and defeated…Poor Julie…
We hear that unfamiliar voice for the last time and the video distorts until the end…
I feel like the voice is Julie’s voice actress, and Julie is hearing her in her head…
Next is “/tearsremembranceinstability” at the end of the link for the main website
There’s distortion at the beginning as usual…
We cut to the sky again…
It is Julie’s voice again…But she is with Frank this time…
Now we cut to some plants…
Now we cut to plants covered by a shadow again…
Now we cut to the weird flower again…
Now we hear the unfamiliar voice again…
I’m just going to call it Weird Voice lol
Now Weird Voice is apologizing and crying…
We cut to the sunlight shining through the trees again…
Now Weird Voice sounds distorted and crying and shouting…
Now we cut to plants showing a small mountain and hear Frank looking for Julie in the distance…
“Julie? Are you alright?” Awww Frank…
Now we cut to the weird flower and hear Julie’s voice again…
Now we hear Weird Voice shouting and crying as it slowly fades into the sunlight…
Now we cut back to the weird flower-OMG IT’S THE DOG TOY BUT IT’S 2D ANIMATED
OMG THE DOG TOY JUST LOOKED AT ME WTF
I feel bad for Frank…They notice that there is something wrong with their husband, and now their best friend, and even asked them if they’re ok…
I feel bad for Julie too…
Next is “/revengeinnocenceregardtemptationtears” at the end of the link for the main website
AND OH MY GOD IT’S A PICTURE OF FRANK
THEY LOOK SO SCARED AND WORRIED OMG
Ok as for the Toy Box in the secret website, someone on Reddit said it was a box, which was assumed to be packaging for the dog toy, and it says “GLE”
Also what was the deal with this dog toy???
I can’t believe I spent two days on this website lol
My hands are kinda tired from typing lol
Also let me know if I miss anything

I've seen people said Adrien doesn't have motivation to be a hero but Marinette does, which is weird because I feel like it's Marinette who doesn't have a motivation to be hero beyond "people listen to Ladybug". Her lack of motivation is what confused me because as a protagonist, she's inevitably become a role model for the young audience and I find nothing about her is likeable, even more so after she become a guardian. It's as if being a guardian inflate her ego and she forgot that everyone else is a human with feelings, not just a pawn or a doll for her to play and ordered around.
Recently I found out a website that contain the concept plot and it confused me more because I feel like concept Marinette is a more grounded character than she is in the show.
Marinette's goal isn't just to be Adrien/Felix's girlfriend but she also need to collect the kwamis that she accidentally releases and she become a guardian not because of luck or favoritism like how it is in the show, it's because her grandfather is the guardian. Adrien/Felix doesn't even become Chat Noir because he's chosen by the guardian, it's Plagg who chose him. It's actually much better than the whole "I choose you but also I'm not going to do anything with you" that Fu pulls in the show.
i don't understand why the higher up/the sponsor reject this plot because I think this much better than whatever we have now. If they have a problem with Chat Noir being an anti-hero, then why do they accept Marinette being written like one while also hailing her as a hero?
---
“Adrien isn't motivated to be a hero” he actually likes being a hero, unlike our role model protagonist, who’d rather do anything than be Ladybug even when she's being lauded for her heroic deeds. Is this based on Adrien trying to quit when Fu or Marinette is making his job needlessly more difficult to do? Because, like, that's the only thing that he seems to dislike about being a hero, which, like, makes Marinette an even worse hero. She’s so bad at her job, she makes otherwise eager heroes lose their motivation.
I’m gonna be very honest here; Marinette becoming Ladybug because she accidentally released a bunch of magical creatures and Adrien/Félix being more of an anti-hero rival than a full-on ally would have been copied straight from Cardcaptor Sakura’s starting setup. Like, I’m not surprised that even the rejected ideas for Miraculous are copied from other properties, but it just proves that regardless of any other variables, Astruc’s creation was always going to be highly derivative. Regardless, I do feel that Fu being her grandfather instead of a stranger would have gone a long way in justifying Marinette’s special treatment both in-universe and to the audience, but that’s probably why it was rejected.
Like, we can mock the fact that Marinette isn’t actually within spitting distance of being a “normal girl with a normal life” all we like, but that doesn’t change the fact that, from a purely on-paper angle, she is pretty average. She’s a middle-schooler with pretty average hobbies who deals with normal teen problems like bullies and a crush on a boy she doesn’t know how to deal with. There’s a reason it’s the opening line for the show’s opening. It's marketable. A special chosen one from the start wouldn’t have been as marketable in the same way. Especially when we take into account how hypersensitive Astruc is to Marinette being less liked than he’d want. He’d do whatever he can think of to make sure Marinette isn’t immediately judged a “Mary Sue”.
The thing with executives is that they don't watch the shows they fund. They read the pitch, synopses, and maybe the scripts if they can find the time. And even then, they might not want to put in the money to get a script revised even if they paid enough attention to tell it was dogshit. They wouldn't be interested as long as the different Miraculous bedsheets and shampoos keep selling and as long as the show isn’t too gay to sell to other countries. Like, the show bible that Gloob leaked? The one full of inaccuracies because it was outdated? That was what the executives were most likely given when the retool went into development. In addition, corporate oversight on the show has actually decreased the longer it’s gone on, because the show’s proven itself to be a success. I’m pretty sure the higher-ups were not asked: “hey, is it okay if we make Marinette an entitled jerk who gets validated at every turn while she starts treating people worse and worse?” I’m pretty sure no one okayed Marinette’s “villain arc”, it was just allowed to pass because it didn’t make the show less marketable.
That’s the thing with any property that becomes “too big to fail”. Less oversight means less quality control. It’s like one anonymous Gamefreak employee said about making Pokémon games: “It’ll sell anyway, so it doesn’t matter if it’s bad.”

The Hundred Line music team interview from Famitsu issue 1895
What was Takada's first impression when hearing about this project?
Masafumi Takada: "C'mon, that's never going to happen." (laughs) Then my second impression, after Uchikoshi plastered the flowchart on the wall was "No way! They weren't joking?"
Kazutaka Kodaka: Uchikoshi's intention with putting the flowchart on the office wall was showing off how massive of an endeavor we had ahead of us. It was his way of demanding resolve from us (laughs).
Takada: In summary, I thought they were out of their minds and that no other company would attempt a project as ridiculous as this. Being able to see such a Herculean labor released and being part of it is something I'll remember later as one of best parts of my life.
Tell us the step-by-step of the song requesting process for The Hundred Line.
Kodaka: I requested a song and Takada composed it.
Takada: Same as it has been for the past 10+ years (laughs).
Kodaka: Ok, for a more concrete explanation, first Media Vision's sound director created a track list based on songs from previous games. We sent the list to Takada and told him they'll also need battle versions. Then the songs are sent to me for approval. Also, I've been doing the screen composition for my stories since Rain Code and I can feel that this made me better at requesting music. Whenever I felt I didn't have the right song for a scene I'd immediately get Takada to make it and put it in-game as soon as it's ready. Due to that, there weren't many songs requested at the start.
Takada: The baseline for the composition is the normal days theme, titled HUNDRED LINE. That one that plays on the website. We required a theme song that fit the game's general image and changed its tune over time, so it had to be on the longer side. Later I composed variations of that. As Kodaka just mentioned, I would get additional requests during screen composition. We had agreed on that in advance, but when it happened, it felt like I was getting new requests every day.
Kodaka: You just described the entire development cycle.
Takada: As the work was mostly remote, I wouldn't stop getting chat messages about all the random things they wanted.
Sounds tiresome.
Takada: Not for me, I like the way we work. I read the general plot summaries, naturally, but I really love slowly discovering the nitty-gritty of the narrative through the track requests.
Makes sense (laughs).
Takada: The ultimate consequence of that was a routine where I had to deliver the new tracks they asked for before the next morning. With the songs being arranged while Kodaka was inputting the scripts by his own hands, it was easier to visualize what was being wanted, and I could feel extra joy and excitement of delivering the track even faster than he hoped (laughs). Embarrassing as it is to admit, being a long time Kodaka fan makes me want to do better, just to please him.
Kodaka: Having a scene's whole presentation locked on faster helps a lot. I'm the kind of guy who likes having everything sorted out without leaving any parts for later, and one of the best things about my company is that I can work with people who match my speed. Things wouldn't go so well with a third-party creator.
Takada: One track can take a month to compose, at worst. Although occasionally, I can have the framework done in just a few hours.
Kodaka: For something basic, like a fluffy ambient track, there was even one time you composed on the spot and it was approved immediately.
Takada: Yeah, real-time composition.
Sounds like something that wouldn't be possible without the bonds matured by your long-term partnership.
Takada: Good point. That's an important factor.
Kodaka: Besides, we now work on the same company, unlike how it used to be with Danganronpa (laughs). You have to remember that making a whole new IP involves inevitably making a bunch of new songs no matter how hard you wish to keep the track list small.
Takada: I don't even have a solid notion of how many there are in the game. There's over 90 of them in the Gallery, but adding up the noise music made for specific cutscenes, I might have composed around 400. I feel like The Hundred Line is a game that would take a working adult about 5 years to play, but I believe just playing like normal is enough to fill up the Gallery.
Still, you wouldn't say the work here was tough?
Takada: I can imagine the topic of the other interviews was about the excess of work in The Hundred Line's production, but I don't feel like that at all when it comes to the game's music. If anything, the sound effects side was the bigger problem.
Kodaka: Rain Code had a ton of sound effects, too.
Takada: Yup. I'd personally guess the most undesirable position for this game would be Schedule Manager (laughs). That's accounting for the lack of a break between Rain Code and The Hundred Line.
Is it true that when the production period for two games overlap, it's easy to get the mixed?
Takada: If I get multiple lines of work at the same time and they're very different in tone, I use one to take a break when I find myself stuck on the other. Considering that, you could say I'm better at multitasking. And I'm also Too Kyo's treasurer, so I can safely say I won't be out of productive breaks.
Does the game have an original genre associated with it, like Danganronpa had with "Psychopop"?
Takada: I vividly remember Kodaka's first answer when I asked what the music should be like.
Kodaka: I don't (laughs).
Takada: I was just finishing Rain Code's soundtrack, so he pointed and said "Like that" (laughs). Later there was an additional request to bring Rain Code's flavor closer to Danganronpa's old taste, and that's what got the ideas flowing.
Tell us your main focus in composing the tracks.
Takada: One thing I always have in mind is that I want my music to feel like one more character participating in the conversation. One day I was drinking with one of the performers working with me at the time for Danganronpa 1's soundtrack and he said "The music itself is one of the performers". This phrase has been living rent-free in my head ever since. That made me go for more intrusive songs during character conversations. And to throw in some hints of nostalgia.
Right, nostalgia. Getting the players to feel like they returned home.
Takada: One of those words you see around online all the time but never in real life (laughs). More specifically, a technique I used for multiple tracks in this game was to create modern remakes of the tunes I created in the past, and go over the request prompts trying to find a place where I could fit them. To do so, I pulled my 10+ year old synthesizer out of its dusty box. The problem is that my synthesizer is a Virus TI, a somewhat weird model that only lets me check out my past tunes by connecting it to an old Mac… That's how far I went to put the old tunes in new melodies, so I hope that's appreciated.
Is that how you composed HUNDRED LINE, the track you mentioned before?
Takada: Yes. Its tunes are entirely new, but I arranged them with the revived inspiration of past games, as it's best suited for scenes where we have the whole crew chatting.
Kodaka: HUNDRED LINE is everything I asked for. Danganronpa V3 still has my favorite normal days track, and this one is made to be something fans of that song would enjoy. A cool-leaning flavor of normal.
Takada: Well said. "Cool-leaning" is right.
Kodaka: War is a major theme in The Hundred Line, so the song needed to match the bloodiness of it. It really came out just as I imagined.
What was the rest of the composition process like?
Takada: I was just trying to fill up the request list (laughs) As I mentioned earlier, in this game, the schedule was our archnemesis… There's one time I said "Hey, I need to work on this song, can I take the persuasion sequence theme off of the to-do list?". Thinking back now, I can't believe I tried to cut a track as important as the freaking persuasion song (laughs).
Kodaka: If I recall right, that was the exploration theme vs. the persuasion theme. We wanted the exploration music to be different for each area, but on further thought, there was no reason for that. But we obviously can't go without music for the persuasion sequences, so it was decided he had to do that one.
It's not often you see Takada that desperate.
Takada: Yeah… True… Looking back, I had my back against the wall the whole time (laughs).
The battle themes feel completely different from the normal days parts. Can you tell us any production secrets about it?
Takada: When composing for The Hundred Line, I considered including a live orchestra, but I thought it wouldn't fit well for the normal days of Komatsuzaki's far-from-photorealistic characters. The tactical RPG battle scenes, on the other hand, could be perfectly (on a meta level) introduced in live orchestra style.
Kodaka: What I wanted for battles was 90s digital rock. BOOM BOOM SATELLITES is the specific band I had in mind. Rather than the refined rock of today, something more in between Electronic and Chemical Brothers. And the music he delivered was exactly what I wanted. He granted my wish for hype on the level of Danganronpa's Class Trial music.
Takada: The first battle theme I made was WAVE 1. It's got a lot of variants, but not many whole separate tracks for the same purpose, so I don't remember having too much difficulty.
Kodaka: My personal favorite is the boss theme. The final version is very different from what I initially asked for. We drastically changed directions along the way to make the bosses feel more grandiose, and I'm glad for that decision.
Takada: I will always include choirs, no matter how overused they may be. Also, the track accounts for the flow of gameplay, namely that there is dialogue and a boss alarm inserted between waves. Cutscenes may interrupt the music, but the key shift for when they do is carefully planned. There's a pause between the first song and the next, which I paid no mind to because I assumed it was a loading screen, but no, that was Media Vision leaving space for the last song to trail. I could go a lot harder with the tempo thanks to this nice gesture.
Kodaka: I love the way that sounds.
Takada: Just having one or two seconds to trail already makes a huge difference, so I'm glad I got to adjust the tracks accordingly. I was so glad that I got all that to work the way envisioned that I stopped everything to report the good news at the company chat (laughs).
Quality comes from the finer details like that.
Takada: I don't know if that's how everyone does it, but I like to make the final tweaks on my tracks after listening to them play out in-game. Even at the moment of this interview, there's a part I'm planning to change as soon as anyone has a good idea (laughs). That aside, the OST is pretty much finished.
Tell us what the hardest song to make.
Takada & Kodaka: SIREI's theme.
Kodaka: I wanted that one to be one of the first tracks delivered, but it took forever (laughs).
Takada: SIREI's is this game's Monokuma. But Monokuma's theme was lightning in a bottle to me. I couldn't see myself making a second song like that after that miracle. Under intense pressure, I initially composed a much more comedic tune.
Kodaka: SIREI only clicked with you when you heard Ootsuka's voice work, was it?
Takada: Oh yeah. That mattered a lot, now that you mention it. Ultimately, I went with playful singing voices in the unique fashion of a funny foreigner working as a semiregular on a talk show.
Kodaka: Did you get Jun Fukuda (Rain Code's Sound Director) to sing there?
Takada: No, I asked him to, but his version sounded too normal. It didn't bring out the nuance I just mentioned. I had to use edited sound bytes. But it does feel like a track that will be better appreciated by the Western fans.
Kodaka: What really felt new to me was the emergency track for when the enemies invade. Nothing in the past games sounded like that. Also, I love the piano for the sad scenes, something that shows a lot first in Rain Code and now here, so this time there were multiple versions.
Takada: Pianos are generally hard to fake, so I compose their parts while playing on a real one. The problem is that every 2-3 days I forget how to play the piano, so if I'm asked to replay it later, I need to take the crash course again (laughs). And the game has many other tracks like this, that I compose once and can't ever perform later. That's how it goes for me, instead of having something pre-formed in my head, I just test instruments I can't play and see what I get.
Thanks to the power of your music, I never feel like skipping the scene where they're putting on their Class Armor.
Takada: Thank you. Being honest with you, at first I didn't understand why they were stabbing themselves and getting all bloody (laughs). At the time, I still had Shinigami's transformation sequence from Rain Code vivid in my head, so I was imagining going from something like that straight to battle. So I came up with a rising sequence from a choir in the transformation, to digital rock in WAVE 1, pure rock in WAVE 2, then bring the choir back for the climactic boss battle. That was the only idea I had in my mind before I started looking at the screens and feeling my way around the instruments.
Were you trying to make the scene feel more continuous through the tunes of the choir?
Takada: Yes. You can notice the choir in parallel with the tunes of the synthesizer.
I was also caught completely off guard by the gimmick arrangement for one specific day number…
Takada: That was Kodaka's idea (laughs).
Kodaka: I won't spoil what this is about, but it's far from an original joke. I just thought that at some point, the game would need the kind of whimsy that changes the whole feel of the world.
Later in the game, there's a scene where music is used offensively. That attack was really rich in genre variety.
Kodaka: Also my idea, and for this one, I provided Takada with a playlist of study material.
Takada: I always loved high-effort shitposting, so that was a fun time. By the way, the singing voice in the folk-styled song is Jun Fukuda.
Kodaka: Contrary to the previous mentions here, this folkish music was Takada's idea. I only asked him to make a song that would feel out of place without explaining how.
Takada: And while this isn't about music, the sound effects team focused their efforts mainly only on the alarm sirens and the morning bell. Fukuda adjusted the pitch over and over again until it didn't conflict with any of the music playing during their scenes. Try noticing that when you hear them.
With how much care goes into every detail of this game, music or otherwise, I don't think it will be long before people start asking for sequels.
Kodaka: I'd be glad to hear that any other time, but at this moment, I think I'm just tired of this idea… (pained laughs).
Takada: No sequels in sight until you get over that (laughs).
Kodaka: Also, making another game this big doesn't sound financially possible.
Adult problems…
Takada: I know all about it since I'm partially in charge of finances. Kodaka handles the incoming assets and I handle the outgoing assets. Honestly, we had a few moments that damaged my stomach (laughs). Worrying about money affects your creativity, so it's recommendable to get that out of your head, but you can't afford to forget about it either.
Kodaka: In my previous works, all I had to do was suggest things nonstop, but now that I represent my own company, I need to gauge which ideas to push and which to stop. That's not easy to me. In hindsight, it's because I never had the experience of needing to hit the brake on an idea before.
Takada: Well said! (laughs)
Kodaka: It's like I had the will to hit the brakes, but without knowing where that was, I hit the clutch pedal and started doing weird things with the gears (laughs).
Takada: The woes of a president and a vice-president. The efforts of our own staff, Media Vision, and Aniplex are naturally tangible, which creates a pressure for us to recompense them properly… That also made it impossible to pull any punches with the music. My mind was set in its desire for every track to be appreciated.
Kodaka: Besides, our production style is indie all the way. Our budget comes from our own pockets, and whatever looks impossible is solved with brute force instead of money. If we knew in advance how much this game would cost, a sane person would have shrunk the project. A game this niche coming out this large is a rarity.
Takada: I hope we're headed toward a future where it's easier to pump money into niche art. So many ideas die before they start.
Kodaka: That said, considering this game grew over twice its initial budget, if a normal company had told me to cut corners or, worst-case scenario, cancel the project, all I could say is "You know what, fair".
I agree… Everything you say about this production sounds very last-resort-ish.
Takada: My word as treasurer is that this game couldn't even begin to exist without Aniplex's support.
Kodaka: Well, true. We tried doing it without Aniplex at first, so we know for a fact that we couldn't finish it with our own money. Their inclusion might have been the most morale-improving part of the production.
Takada: Definitely Kodaka's biggest accomplishment as a CEO! One day he came out of nowhere and said "I think Aniplex wants a contract with us". I already praised him about it when he directly asked for the praise, but I did it without knowing that we were signing with a company that would let us have full ownership over our IP. Or even that any big company was willing to do that. That was the moment where I started believing in this game.
Kodaka: Before Aniplex, there was hell. We were confident in the quality of our work, but we were always wrestling with that tense fear that the thing we were investing into would end unfinished. We were ready to relinquish the creative rights to the franchise if that's what it took to conclude this, hoping that someone would adopt us if we were lax enough with our contractual demands, but thankfully, Aniplex was unbelievably eager to work with us.
Takada: Oh yeah, those guys were ride-or-die from beginning to end (laughs).
Kodaka: I have to admit no sane person would start making a game before they have the funds for it. But waiting for the right time would delay this project 2 or 3 years, plus Aniplex wouldn't have wanted to stick with us if we hadn't made a decent amount of progress before the first handshake. In this sense, I think luck wouldn't have smiled on us if it weren't for this questionable decision. It's not a trick we can pull off intentionally if we ever needed to do it a second time, but I believe just getting this game out there will do something to increase the number of quirky niche titles in the Japanese gaming industry.
Your closing messages, please!
Takada: Just play the game and you'll understand. You probably won't be able to do it in a Japanese home, but I think playing it on extra loud speakers would make for an amazing experience. I'd say the TRPG parts are especially exciting in this department, so give it a try if you have the chance.
Kodaka: You already know Takada did an astounding job on the music but so did Jun Fukuda on the sound effects, making the TRPG section a blast to listen to. Do pay attention to the details.
By the way, do you plan on releasing the soundtrack?
Takada: Yes… … …do we?
Kodaka: Probably! After we're a little less on the red (laughs).
Takada: Until then, enjoy the selection of 10 tracks available on the mini-soundtrack that comes as a preorder bonus. It contains unique remixes of the OST pieces, and should help you immerse yourself into the world of The Hundred Line on those moments when playing isn't an option.

if you were making a syllabus for a comics class, besides the obvious (homestuck, hark a vagrant, a comic from KC green, a comic from ONE), what comics would you say best represent webcomics as a medium/ are needed to represent the medium? I always liked your hitmen for destiny rec and was wondering if you knew anything else like that
if we're talking about representations of the format rather than just examples of good comics, i think the choices would be really different. for one thing i would cut hark a vagrant and kc green comics since, while both good, they "operate" more or less the same as print comics and utilize the internet primarily as a means of distribution rather than incorporating it into the creation process (beyond making colors websafe, when applicable)
as a lowbrow example, jerkcity (or whatever its called now) is a purely web-based creation. the scripts are private chats dumped into microsoft comic chat and generated from pre-made software assets. im not a fan personally, but there are xkcd comics that make conscious use of the web-medium/infinite canvas to create comics that can literally only exist in a web format (homestuck is the same, but on a massive scale which would make it hard to teach in this scenario). bouletcorp (english website dead? huge loss imo) featured quite a few comics that took advantage of readers needing to scroll in order to obtain more information. e.m. carroll's horror works capitalized on the use of scroll and click to induce tension in the reader. dinosaur comics managing to squeeze decades of comedic juice out of clip art dinosaurs arranged in the same layout every day.
i feel like a class about webcomics should be about the comics that differentiate it from the print medium, if that makes sense. manhua would also fit into this but i would choose cutbu as the example bc i love cutbu comics lol. they came back last year just so everyone knows. with a comic called 28th century superfan

Persona 5 Kitchenette (Cooking)

is a P5 game idea i came up with... instead of the main PT, the stars here are the auxiliary phantom thieves instead (and joker): akechi, sumire, sophia, zenkichi, and toshiro. this came be because i'm annoyed at how zenkichi (and sophia) are not in P5T, so i thought "you know what, because i am complaining about the lack of P5S guys in P5T, and the royal trio fans complain about the lack of P5R guys in P5S, what if i merge the left out folks in a game. world peace???"
it's basically cooking mama, but a bit more elaborate. the game will be split in 3 parts: shopping, teaching, and cooking. more below (VERY LONG)
storyline
winter holiday is coming up. joker and the gang plans another reunion in leblanc. but then, joker remembers something: the team was bigger, sometimes. there are some of the PT comrades that have yet to chat and meet with them, or even with each of them. so he decided to whip up a surprise: he'll invite not only the main PT, but also the auxiliaries, to meet with each other and the main team.
so joker invited the auxiliary gang ahead of the D-Day. and to make the smaller mini reunion more fun, he decides to do a cooking lesson with them, and they have to cook this on the real reunion day - for the main PT gang.
for the mini reunion, they'll be cooking in sojiro's house, instead of leblanc because of course, leblanc will be filled by customers, duh! they'll have some chats - the awkward one, funny one, annoying one... some character developments and look deeper on the ideals and meanings from the journeys each aux members have gone through. exploring the possible paralels in each characters, contrasts, and what they have been doing while they're off the game.
gameplay
the game is basially visual novel with minigames. it has 2 modes:
story mode: follows the story above. the story itself won't be long, probably like... 3 hours? 5? i dunno. it will play like P5T format: gameplay - dialogue - repeat. i personally find this format to be monotonous to enjoy, so the break sections (the one with menus) will probably allow you to walk around the house and outside? still, all you can do here is talk, so probably there'll be reward for talking. maybe bonuses to ease your next minigame. the character you'll be playing as is scripted.
free mode: you can cook whatever you want in here. it's off from the main story, so treat it like an "what if" (like joker's wedding scenarios in P5T). you can cook whatever you want - there are even new recipes in this mode! complete all the recipes perfectly to achieve platinum. you can pick anyone you'd like to play as (though they determine the kind of minigame you'll be playing, being shopping/teaching/cooking - except joker, he can play all these three).
meanwhile, the game parts are as below. these aren't super fixed or anything, could be changed.
shopping: you'll be playing as sophia. retaining her role in PT as a vendor, your job is to shop the items joker is asking you. joker will give you some items to buy. each item are bought by playing 2 minigames: maze and "find the difference".
maze: sophia has to find the right website to buy the item... by donig code blocks, because she's an AI. code it right, so sophia won't get lost among the sea of websites... the most monotonous one i guess, as there isn't many varieties to it...
find the difference: joker wants these items precise, so you gotta pick the right shop and item based on joker's note. plays like papers, please!, where there are details you can inspect deeper to match and make sure you get the right one (like fake customer reviews, for example)
2. teaching: you'll be playing as sumire and toshiro. each of them will do 1 recipe (so 2 recipes in total). they can cook well, so joker would like you to teach akechi and zenkichi how! teaching is kinda half-half on cooking and "pick the right one" game.
cooking: your job is to prepare the ingredients. these are too advanced for those bad cooks, so hopefully this will ease their process (like preparing fish from the bones, or whole chicken).
"pick the right one": basically making sure those bad cooks do the instructions properly (example, placing the right step to do in the progress bar in stirring process), with a timer.
3. cooking: you'll be playing as akechi and zenkichi. each of them will do 1 recipe (so 2 recipes in total). they're confirmed to be bad at cooking, so joker wants them to learn cooking better... for akechi so he can stop buying take outs, and for zenkichi so he can cook for akane better. this one is full cooking a la cooking mama, so their mingame depends on the recipe they're cooking.
for the mini reunion, you'll be playing shopping and teaching. sophia will shop the ingredients for both mini reunion and reunion day, while sumire and toshiro will teach you how to cook in mini reunion day. in the real reunion day, you'll be playing cooking only.
i was thinking to pair sumire-zenkichi and toshiro-akechi, because pairing sumire-akechi will probably develop less new things from them, as they've met in P5R. but i'm sure that developing new things isn't everything - i think akechi-sumire is a lacking connection in the royal trio triangle, and i'm sure this game will also be about getting new interactions from the established character dynamics. so probably, first half of the teaching/cooking section will be sumire-zenkichi and toshiro-akechi, while the second half is the opposite (or you can swap the order). so you get all.
as for morgana (because morgana is always next to joker), he'll be there as emotional support commentary cat during the gameplay. sophia can also be one during teaching/cooking.
as for the recipes, some will be taken from joker's kitchen in P5S. the ultimate recipes, leblanc coffee and curry, will only be unlockable in free play.

costume
i approached this one with functionality & "what would atlus do", even when i don't know what people wear at winter!!! otherwise, i'd take joker's glasses off and all that... though i believe i can be better at the color picks - i don't think atlus does color coding that much, judging the costume variants in the game. everyone who has long hairs will be tied, because like futaba said:

joker: i observed that his wardrobe is mostly plain, no pattern or peculiar detail. so i gave him shirt with not too much decor other than the buttons and black lines on end, and jeans to make it homey, but still kinda formal for guest visits. joker's appron is the appron he use in leblanc. nothing fancy behind it...
akechi: i noticed a running joke about akechi and plaid patterns when i was doing scramble zine and ya. all his wardrobe has that. so i gave him yellow plaid outer. he sorta has earthy color and his party color is brown. but his pants are already beige, so it's... yellow. his appron is kinda fancy, but still clean sleek. has metallic accents (pocket pins and harness) to give a bit boldness to it, vibing his loki side. i came up that shido facilitated him the appron if he wants to cook himself, but too bad he doesn't know that akechi can't cook...
sumire: she starts to feel more comfortable living as sumire again, so she wears the glasses back. i left her hairstyle as is, as it has lore. her fit is mostly opposite of kasumi, being more modest. color is from the violet dress she bought with joker in 3rd semester. her appron is... this wasn't really the plan (i think of picture printed appron), but i can't come up with a design yet!!! so i think she'd just have normal appron, but with patterns. kinda looks aunty/mom vibes... i think of the tora shirt she picked with joker. it's pretty mom/aunty vibes and sumire wasn't actually sure when she picked that, but i think she eventually developed a slight interest in those kind of patterns. i'm still considering to change the design, though... not 100% fixed.
sophia: she's a unique case, as her role/game is not cook, but shopper! so she becomes a delivery girl. ichinose came up with her look. so i gave her delivery jacket. her design is the most difficult, as i don't usually like drawing overdecorated anime fits, and how sophia is meant to evoke friendliness according to soejima & kanda, plus keeping her minimalistic aesthetics. then i combined the details it with puffer jackets, while making sure it's not overdecorated and making it as similar as sophia's original shilouette. IMO it became a bit too playful, as i slapped colors that are not in her original design. the blue green red accent is taken from sophia's shop UI. treat it like sophia's shop employee jacket! her footwear is a bit taller and is a shoe now. she's travelling the net, so...
zenkichi: the adults are tricky. they still wear the suit, so i could only change the shirt and tie. zenkichi's design is pretty normal common, even his design uniqueness is logical: when people's shirt button are usually similar colored to the shirt, his is a peculiar black. so i gave him pocket with black lining... he'll mostly be off suit, so there's no problem with suit obscuring pocket. his tie is also off. his appron is new. but because he doesn't know much cooking, he bought an overkill appron, AKA a barista appron with many pockets...
toshiro: i'm not really sure what is his job after P5T... but i assume he still wears suit around. so he wears a pale purple shirt. his tie is still purple, but grid pattern. he doesn't wear gloves anymore too, of course. i don't know toshiro's icon. we need to think that... his appron is plain, simple, and functional. the best that works with his housechores, something he excels at.
bonus contents
i'm thinking of a DLC with another character that have big impact to the story, but also too out of the picture to come back: maruki. i haven't decided how it will be like though. for now, i'm thinking either of these:
a separate day in the story, where you just cook with maruki. no shopping section in this DLC, just cooking and teaching. they both will teach a recipe to each other, and talk a bit more about how's maruki been doing.
a dream section or something? comes down to whether i can come up with a reason to summon the other PT auxes to this story. basically, besides maruki, you can invite 1 more guy from the list of PT auxes to cook with him. so each character will have their own storyline. more on this option:
sumire will be about reflecting their past relationship and how things are now, akechi about 2/2 (but pretending they don't meet, so it fits both who do the akechi and normal versions) and probably shido ties, toshiro and zenkichi about what happened to them in 3rd semester and how they feel when they found out, and sophia about learning maruki's heart research.
i assume toshiro is immune to maruki's influence in a way for now, because erina was born to protect him from godly influence... or maybe because salmael has taken place? i dunno. could be he's not immune either though, if erina's meant to only protect from salmael and not maruki.

ok, listening & learning here. i've been pretty invested in electoral politics my whole life—my dad's a state congressman now, much to everyone's misfortune. so i've definitely been the person who's said stuff like "well, you can do more radical stuff AND vote," but i think you're spot on—i haven't gotten involved in community organizing, but i have gone to democrat meetings. i guess i'm scared because it's unfamiliar territory. i don't really even know how to find the people doing meaningful action and reach out to them. there's a lot of broken websites and out of date fb pages, and i don't have a script for getting involved the way i do with politics. do you have any advice or encouragement? thank you in advance if you do answer, your writing has actively made my life better since i found it
Thanks for your question! This stuff is difficult to locate on purpose -- both because of state repression, and because when you are working outside of the existing legal and political system, there are risks to being out in the open about it.
Adjusting to more extra-political (as in, outside of democratic politics) activities is a gradual on-ramp. You will understand the landscape and see greater options the further you go, but it will take some time. A good place to start out is local mutual aid networks. Look up a local Food Not Bombs chapter, for instance. See if there is an anarchist library or leftist publisher near you and attend some events. Check out your local libraries and on-campus groups to see if there are any engaging in actions that you can contribute to. Interface with the local punk scene and see if there are any people there who are really about anarchist action.
Go to a communist reading group. Start one with your friends! Working outside of the mainstream political system means building the kind of world you want to live in and the communities you want rather than being plugged into a pre-existing structure like a cog in the machine.
Talk to your neighbors. Give money and food to homeless people and chat them up. Drop off supplies at protests and encampments. Ask people what they need. As you prove yourself and come to understand your local landscape, you will get invited into more actions or will form the friendships and political education needed to start ones of your own. Break the law for the sake of helping other people when you can. Find rules you can bend or ignore in all things. Avoid the Party for Socialism and Liberation and the Revolutionary Communist Party like the fucking plague. they are cults.
You will find your way. I get more and more radical every year, and figure out a ton of shit I didn't previously understand. It's been at least a decade in the making for me. So don't be too hard on yourself if at first you don't feel like you understand what you are doing or that you are not doing "enough." Electoral politics runs on a constant manufactured sense of urgency and exhaustion. But we are building a world that is better, more loving, slower, and more responsive to the rhythms of the earth and our bodies.
You will be where you need to be. <3

CHAT CONTROL BACK ON THE AGENDA
If you don't know what Chat Control is, this post sums it up well, as well as to why its a bad idea, but in a nutshell, European citizens will be forced to accept having their private messages/photos to be scanned by AI Or else they can't send images, texts, videos or links anymore. The council vote has been delayed a few days ago, but it has been put back on the agenda according to this tweet
US citizens should help us spread the word, too, because if it passes theres no doubt the US governement will take "inspiration" from Chat Control and pass a similar law in the US too. If you're in the EU, you can find your reps here (if you click on them it will redirect you to the countrie's respective website of reps ) https://op.europa.eu/en/web/who-is-who/organization/-/organization/COREPER/ Join our growing discord server ! We are organizing scripts and putting together ressources ! https://discord.gg/FPDJYkUujM
SPREAD THE WORD ! We can't allow this to pass !

"Web 1.0 Hosting - is an advanced static hosting with some predefined most necessary ready-made scripts, a smallweb project that makes it possible to access static websites from old devices such as retro computers, old operating systems, palmtops, and cellular phones as part of an initiative to save the old web and support the smallweb movement. Hosting of modern websites and the use of modern technologies are also permitted. There is also a search engine, web mail and web chat, working on both modern and legacy systems."
