David Hasselhoff and Rhys Darby surprised with 'special' tribute from local CHCH artists
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime day!”
Tumblr media
Two local Kiwi artists shared a “once-in-a-lifetime” interaction with none other than ‘Baywatch’ star David Hasselhoff and comedian Rhys Darby.
23-year-old Jacob Root and 22-year-old Cole Ferrand surprised the two celebs with a tribute artwork on the streets of Christchurch.
The pair were approached to be a part of the television show David and Rhys are filming right here in New Zealand. Of course, they jumped at the opportunity.
Jacob and Cole toured the stars around the city’s street art - much of it being their own works - then surprised the pair with a tribute piece painted on a Chorus cabinet in the CBD.
Tumblr media
Jacob spoke to our very own Breeze Canterbury’s Hilary Muir to chat about his and Cole’s encounter with The Hoff.
“We did a whole interview with him and talked about Christchurch, our upbringing during the earthquakes and how we got into art,” Jacob said of his three hours with the ‘Baywatch’ star.
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime day!”
You'll be able to catch the artists on the show when it comes out, but until then, you can check out Jacob and Cole’s mural at 235 Bealey Ave in Christchurch.
This isn’t the only sighting of The Hoff here in NZ.
He and Rhys were spotted enjoying the sights and sounds of Auckland earlier this month.
Rachel Hart, also known as the One-Handed Baker, surprised her Instagram followers by sharing a snap of her encounter with the legendary actor at the Sky Tower on Friday.
Well, it seems as though The Hoff is making the most out of his time in the country, and we’ll be keeping an eager eye on what he does next.

Hi Laya :) I was wondering if I could ask you for some book recs for some NZ YA to look for when I'm in Aotearoa next month. anything set in NZ would be wonderful and I'd love to try a few Māori authors. and I know you live on the North Island but if you know any good bookshops worth a visit in Christchurch or Dunedin, I'd love to hear about them ^.^ hope you're well!
Hey!
Honestly I'm not super familiar with a large chunk of NZ YA because I think a lot of what I see is by white authors and/or not queer so it's often not what I'd most like to read - and also the YA skews more to what an intl audience would consider MG. And then some I have read I just don't like lmao. so I don't know how helpful this is.......but the first things that come to mind, from Māori or Pasifika authors:
Flight of the Fantail by Steph Matuku (she has a few other MG ish ones)
Whiti Hereaka has some YA as well, it's been quite a few years since I read them
Na Viro by Gina Cole I think is adult but I've seen it sorted as YA a couple times and it feels YA-ish?
Charlie Tangaroa & The Creature From The Sea by T K Roxborough is def more on the MG end, I enjoyed it tho!
Dawn Raid by Pauline Smith - haven't read this but keep meaning to, possibly MG-ish
------
Some other places to browse that might be helpful?
-Anything from Huia Publishers is great, though it's mostly MG or Adult (....almost everything I mentioned above is from Huia)
-hookedonbooksnz is a NZ YA review site (reviews by teens) - I think the site is down atm? but I linked the twitter
-the sapling for news & reviews of childrens books, it's just starting up again from a year's hiatus
-the SJV awards has a youth novel category (there's a longlist at the top of each winners page, & 2021, 2022, annoying to navigate but includes indie/selfpub also)
-also checking out the NZCYA winners and nominees is a good place to look! (having said that I'm struggling to find anywhere that has all the longlists)
--------
Some of my fav slightly older (like some from when I was a kid haha - and they're all pakeha as far as I know) authors are Elizabeth Knox (esp Dreamhunter), Karen Healey (The Shattering, When We Wake) Fleur Beale (esp Juno of Taris), Maurice Gee (esp Salt and Halfmen of O), Brian Falkner (esp Tomorrow Code) - you might already know about them on account of them being around for ages and idk how all of them aged, but I loved them a lot! All are set or partially set here
-----
Bookstores:
I am originally from the south island (and am here currently)! I know of Scorpio Books in chch that's been around a long time! There's definitely a bunch more but I don't know anything more than you can find out by googling, I don't tend to go to bookstores when I've been there recently unfortunately haha

Why Skip Hire Is Essential for Your Construction Project
Construction projects, whether big or small, generate a substantial amount of waste. Managing this waste efficiently is crucial not only for the environment but also for the smooth progress of the project.
Skip hire has become an indispensable aspect of construction operations, providing a convenient and effective solution to waste management challenges. In this article, we explore why skip hire is essential for your construction project
Efficient Waste Management
One of the primary reasons why skip hire chch is essential for construction projects is efficient waste management. Construction sites produce various types of waste, including rubble, wood, metal, and packaging materials.
Without proper management, this waste can clutter the site, posing safety hazards and impeding workflow. Hiring skips allows construction companies to segregate different types of waste conveniently, ensuring that it is collected and disposed of properly. This promotes a cleaner and safer working environment, enhancing productivity and minimising the risk of accidents.
Cost-Effectiveness
Opting for skip hire can also lead to cost savings for construction projects. While some may initially view skip hire as an additional expense, it often proves to be more cost-effective in the long run. Instead of relying on manual labour to transport waste to disposal sites, hiring skips eliminates the need for multiple trips, saving both time and fuel costs.
Moreover, skip hire companies typically offer flexible rental options, allowing construction firms to choose a size and duration that aligns with their specific requirements. By efficiently managing waste disposal, skip hire helps construction companies optimise their resources and reduce overall project costs.
Tumblr media
Compliance with Regulations
Construction projects are subject to various regulations and environmental standards governing waste management and disposal. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines, penalties, and reputational damage to the company.
Skip hire services ensure that construction waste is handled in accordance with legal requirements and industry standards. Professional skip hire companies have a thorough understanding of waste disposal regulations and employ proper disposal methods to minimise environmental impact. By partnering with a reputable skip hire provider, construction firms can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and regulatory compliance, mitigating potential risks and liabilities.
Enhanced Site Safety
Maintaining a safe working environment is paramount in the construction industry, where workers are exposed to numerous hazards on a daily basis.
Cluttered and untidy work areas increase the risk of accidents and injuries, jeopardising the well-being of workers and potentially leading to costly downtime. Skip hire facilitates the prompt removal of waste from construction sites, reducing clutter and tripping hazards. By keeping the workspace clean and organized, skip hire chch contributes to improved site safety, allowing workers to focus on their tasks without unnecessary distractions or risks.
Environmental Sustainability
In an era of growing environmental awareness, sustainable practices have become increasingly important in all sectors, including construction. Skip hire promotes environmental sustainability by encouraging proper waste segregation, recycling, and responsible disposal.
Reputable skip hire companies prioritise recycling and waste diversion whenever possible, minimising the amount of waste sent to landfills. By choosing skip hire services that prioritise sustainability, construction firms can minimise their ecological footprint and contribute to conservation efforts. This not only benefits the environment but also enhances the company's reputation as a socially responsible entity.
Conclusion
Skip hire is an essential component of modern construction projects, offering numerous benefits ranging from efficient waste management and cost savings to regulatory compliance and environmental sustainability.
By partnering with a reputable skip hire provider, construction companies can streamline their waste disposal processes, improve site safety, and demonstrate their commitment to responsible environmental stewardship. As construction activities continue to expand globally, the importance of effective waste management practices, such as skip hire chch, will only grow in significance.

Here's What To See In Cinema Over The Long Weekend?
The weather's finally starting to cool down, so it's time for the movies to heat up. There are some great films coming out this weekend, so there's no better place for you to be than in the Cinem chch! With so many options, knowing what's worth watching can be tough. We've compiled a list of the best movies in theatres right now.
THE GOOD BOSS
A young woman who works as a personal assistant to an investment banker finds herself in over her head when she's asked to play the role of "the good boss." This is the story of that experience.
I'm not usually a fan of comedies, but this one looks like it might be worth checking out.
The trailer is funny, and it also shows that there's some heart to the story as well. I think a lot of people can relate to the idea of being in over their heads at work and having no idea how to get out of it. This film might be able to help them with that!
THE GOOD BOSS looks like it might be a fun movie to watch this weekend. I'm not usually a fan of comedies, but this one looks like it might be worth watching in Cinem chch. The trailer is funny, and it also shows that there's some heart to the story as well.
DON'T WORRY, DARLING
This weekend, don't worry, darling. You've got options: DON'T WORRY DARLING is a romantic comedy set in London starring Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan, directed by Phillip Noyce, and rated R for language throughout, including some sexual references. It's 1 hour and 41 minutes long.
If you're interested in more movies rated R and featuring an older male star with a younger female one (and there are many), try this list from Vulture!
Tumblr media
TICKET TO PARADISE
If you're looking for a light-hearted romance, Ticket to Paradise is the movie for you. The film follows an aspiring young musician named David (played by Ben Platt), who loves his girlfriend Annette (played by Olivia Cooke).
However, Annette breaks up with him and leaves town on a flight to Paris. David decides that he can't live without her, so he buys a ticket on the same flight as Annette's and pretends to be a doctor in order to meet her parents when they visit their daughter during their stay in France.
The film has received mixed reviews from critics but has proven popular among audiences.
MRS. HARRIS GOES TO PARIS
This film is a comedy directed by Stephen Frears. Mrs Harris (Judi Dench) goes to Paris with her granddaughter, played by Ali Fazal. She's having a romantic adventure and trying to get away from her husband (Tom Wilkinson). This movie is upcoming in Cinem chch which is worthy seeing!
Conclusion
We hope you've enjoyed this list of movies to go see over the long weekend. If there's a movie that you think we missed, please let us know in the comments below!

Just another CHCH idea // TW: passive death wish, aka suicidal ideation
Modern day AU where it wasn’t Harris village that was razed to the ground it was Choi Han’s entire family and because the fire was a freak accident, no one’s fault, CH falls deeper and deeper into himself, no outlet. He becomes severely depressed but can’t picture himself actively offing himself so he just trudges through each day, unable to die, unable to live.
He doesn’t care when the guy next door to his new place moves out.
Doesn't care when someone else moves in.
He does care when the muffled wails of a baby keep him from sleep for three nights in a row, and he bangs on the wall, sleep deprived and pissy.
After a moment the person on the other side of the wall bangs back, making Choi Han glare incredulously at the wall, but he decides to let it go.
New kid, new parent. He used to take care of his little cousins so he knows how difficult it can be. He remembers the colic, he remembers the spit ups and giggles and laughing as they sat around for dinne—
He realizes that the new guy moving in may affect him more than he initially realized.
Morning comes and goes and CH gets ready for work.
Before the fire he’d been planning to take up bodyguarding as an occupation, it seemed like it suited him, it felt right. Without the training which he couldn’t afford due to obvious reasons though no one would hire him, so he turned to gym training. He’s a personal trainer.
He fetches his bag and fetches his towels and he’s about to leave his apartment when there’s a ding on his intercom.
When he looks through the screen there’s a person who’s unfamiliar but he was gonna leave anyway so he just meets them at the door.
”What is it?”
The person looks surprised when he sees Choi Han standing there and CH knows it’s because he’s kind of tall and imposing.
He doesn’t do anything to make them more comfortable though, he’s on a timer, and the guy just stammers, makes him sign to receive a package which CH does bc again no time to argue that he hasn’t ordered anything.
It’s only at the gym that he finds a break to open the package, it’s addressed to him with his apartment number, no name. Inside he finds a fucking fruit basket and a note:
Should have written this earlier but I have a newborn. It may get loud. Apologies for the inconvenience.
TBC
- CH resigned to suffer through baby
- CH reliving his most painful memories again bc baby
- guy next door’s little gifts being about the only thing that keeps him from just upping and moving but some of the stuff he gets are damn nice and maybe sort of worth it? Maybe
- guy next door always attaching little notes to his gifts
- guy next door‘s notes sometimes being sarcastic and witty, and sometimes kind of rude but also funny
- CH replying to one and attaching it to guy next door’s door on a whim
- guy next door attaching a phone number to his next gift
- CH texting guy next door bc why not if he’s some kind of serial killer maybe he’ll—
- CH and guy next door exchanging texts
- texts starting off irregular, stilted, but eventually they increase without them even recognizing that they do because apparently they’re both lonely fucks who have no real friends but a lot on their chests
- guy next door still being guy next door, literally that’s the name attached to the contact in CH’s phone bc out of some silent agreement they still haven’t exchanged names
- CH telling guy next door about the fire
- guy next door telling CH about his family (they’re dead too, only his son left and even then he’s apparently adopted)
- CH having a bad day at work and seriously considering suicide. there had been multiple factors, but the worst was probably it being 5/5, children’s day and a bunch of families gathering in the park right in front of the gym. They looked happy. CH remembered being that happy.
- CH holding a knife in his hand and surrounded by alcohol but on a whim - he seems to have a lot of those - texting guy next door
- CH telling himself if guy next door doesn’t reply within the next twenty minutes it will be a sign but guy next door replying instantly
- CH calling guy
- “How’s your son?” “He’s fine?” “…remember to love him as much as possible.” “Is something wrong? You sound off,”
- CH gripping the knife in his hand
- CH letting go
- CH sobbing wetly into the phone with a call to the guy whose name he doesn’t even fucking know but somehow relying on him anyway. He doesn’t know how this happened. How did this happen?
- CH telling guy everything and after a loaded silence guy asking CH like he’s about to break, like he’s fragile, whether he wants to come over, in fact just do it I’ll be home soon
- CH numbly collecting himself and somehow dressing himself with minimal effort and opening the door to walk over to his place
- CH finding a man standing in front of the door next to his, who’s stunning through the tears in his eyes but he doesn’t care too much about that - does he? - because he feels so shitty
- guy, who’s apparently a slightly scarred but handsome enough to be a model type of guy, and despite CH expecting the same subtle pity and concern he’d heard over the phone, greeting him blandly and ordering CH to come in like he’s discussing a fucking history book
- guy being named KRS
- CH being named, well, CH
- CH marinating in his own depression after the shock of guy - no, KRS’s physical form has worn out
- KRS looking at him with an unidentifiable expression
- KRS appearing to think for a minute and then leaving the room and CH dimly hears him opening a door but he’s too spent to hear much more than that
- KRS returning and CH meaning to look up but before he can something warm and squirming and kind of squishy is plopped into his lap
- “this is the terror I told you about. Say hello Raon.”
- Raon being the cutest fucking baby CH has ever seen aside from his cousins and baby sibling
- Raon giggling and squealing with laughter and clutching CH like there isn’t a single good reason he shouldn’t trust CH when in about a second CH can list at least five
- CH being unable to do anything but curl his hands reflexively around warm baby because of said giggling and squealing and clutching
- CH mumbling his concern that baby is too open to strangers despite knowing that at this age it’s perfectly natural
- KRS replying that Raon is a better judge of character than him and wrapping something around CH’s shoulders before turning on a giant ass TV
- KRS and CH and a drooling happy Raon watching Disney movies
- CH unintentionally spending the night bc he fell asleep to Alice in wonderland songs and woke up smelling traditional Korean food and the tunes of soft jazz on a radio
- ”are you hungry?” and CH unable to pull away bc he’s still kind of fragile and tender feeling and the baby is thankfully gone now but nope he’s sitting in his high chair and there’s good food on a table and KRS is looking blandly at him with his good looks and invisible kindness and CH is only human
- CH leaving the next morning before KRS is awake but KRS pretending to sleep so he doesn‘t pressure him
- KRS thinking he’s really dodged a bullet, humans are so much work, he just wants to slack-
- CH going home and putting the knife still on the floor back into its shelf and cleaning his place top to bottom on a sudden urge to be productive
- KRS and CH going back to texts and an occasional phone call like before
- KRS and CH’s interactions being different from before though in that when Raon cries through the wall CH plays baby shark or soft jazz and baby’s cries turns to coos and KRS sends him another basket in the morning
- KRS and CH somehow seeing each other more often
- KRS and CH greeting each other on the elevator
- CH deciding to see a psychiatrist
- KRS driving him to his first appointment
- “have fun.” “this is supposed to be fun?” “For me it is, I finally get a break from you and your drama,” and CH seeing right through KRS and taking a chance and reaching over to squeeze KRS’s hand on the gear
- “thanks,” and KRS looking bland but with a twist of a smile as CH heads in and watching him go
- CH making progress
- CH taking antidepressants and settling down after a month and he doesn’t have relapses for a year and decides to finally put an end to the fragile push and pull he and KRS have been dancing around all this time
- CH inviting him over for dinner
- CH making all the preparations, smiling to himself at providing for KRS this time, excited kind of at the thought that he’s going to put That Smile on KRS’ face and the doorbell ringing
- CH saying hi and KRS looking at him with an unreadable expression for a second before there’s a warmth at his lips and then it’s gone
- “took you long enough,” and CH knows KRS doesn’t mean it bc he’s looking at him quietly and like he’s quietly proud and there’s a soft, reserved sort of affection lining his smile and CH just wants to hold him forever, never let go
- so he does
- over the years they have their ups and downs, with KRS’s own emotional baggage, and CH‘s depression, and Raon grows up and demands more siblings and they decide, yeah look it’s time to get hitched here’s the ring
- they live happily ever after
the end

TELEVISION SHOW AND CHCH-DT A television show (often simply TV show) is any content produced for broadcast via over-the-air, satellite, cable, or internet and typically viewed on a television set, excluding breaking news, advertisements, or trailers that are typically placed TNTween shows. Television shows are most often scheduled well ahead of time and appear on electronic guides or other TV listings. A television show might also be called a television program (British English: programme), especially if it lacks a narrative structure. A television series is usually released in episodes that follow a narrative, and are usually divided into seasons (US and Canada) or series (UK) — yearly or semiannual sets of new episodes. A show with a limited number of episodes may be called a miniseries, serial, or limited series. A one-time show may be called a “special”. A television film (“made-for-TV movie” or “television movie”) is a film that is initially broadcast on television rather than released in theaters or direct-to-video. The first national color broadcast (the Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 046, 0464646. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 04646, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 04646, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season. FORMATS AND GENRES Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional series). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows. A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 04646s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little. If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order. Since the 04646s, many series feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television series to have this kind of dramatic structure, while the later series Babylon 46 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intended five-season run. In 46046, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film. Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 46046, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television. A television film (“made-for-TV movie” or “television movie”) is a film that is initially broadcast on television rather than released in theaters or direct-to-video. The first national color broadcast (the 444 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 04, 0444. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 044, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 044, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season. Before the 044s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little. If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order. Since the 044s, many series feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television series to have this kind of dramatic structure, while the later series Babylon 4 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intended five-season run. In 404, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film. Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 404, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television. Long Trail to McMurdo, Part 5: Getting There
Tumblr media
At 5.45 on the morning of November 13th, I hauled my newly repacked luggage to the Antarctic passenger terminal to check in. Once ticked off the list, I had to find my two orange ECW bags from the other day and put on the parka, overalls, and bunny boots which were required to be worn on the flight. The rest of my stuff was sorted into four categories:
Carry-on – the items to keep with you at your seat on the plane. These can come in as many pieces as you want, but they all have to fit at once in a prescribed volume, measured by a plywood box at the CDC. Anything that doesn't fit in that box has to be checked.
Checked – Just like on a commercial flight, checked luggage gets stowed with the cargo and you are reunited with it at your destination. Unlike a commercial flight, even if your flight is cancelled or turned around in midair, you still won't see it until you arrive in Antarctica, because one it's been palletized it's a right old pain to get it out again. This is why you have a . . .
Boomerang Bag – Weather in Antarctica is extremely unpredictable, and as we have learned this year, aircraft maintenance can be, too. Sometimes you can be well on your way when a blizzard swoops onto the airfield and the flight has to turn around back to New Zealand. This is called a 'boomerang.' As your checked luggage will stay checked until you arrive in Antarctica, it is therefore wise to pack a few days' worth of clothes and toiletries in a separate bag which will be checked but not palletized, in case you end up with a prolonged holiday in Christchurch.
Leave in Chch – It's summer in New Zealand and also summer in Antarctica, but the former can be quite warm while the latter is well below freezing. Therefore there are probably clothes you won't be needing until you get back to New Zealand, and these are kept for you at the CDC until you return. I left my two skirts, a light cotton shirt, sandals, and antihistamine.
Once everyone was dressed and all our bags were appropriately tagged and checked, we were given our boarding passes and released to have breakfast at the strip mall around the corner. It was a rather quiet and rugged-looking bunch who poured into the trim café that morning; I wonder what the more casual visitors must have thought.
Tumblr media
Then we were back to watch another video – I have seen so many of these now I forget what this one was about – probably the Antarctic Treaty, which is an agreement between all the nations that operate in Antarctica to preserve it for peaceful science and not to claim sovereignty over it. This makes it one of the few things that North and South Korea agree on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the video, we queued for security, which was much like any security queue at any small airport, with the exception of the refreshingly low-tech boarding pass check. Once through the metal detectors and hand luggage scan, we boarded a school bus which was old enough I might have taken it on a field trip as a kid, to be taken out to the waiting C-17.
Tumblr media
We passed the lame C-17 on the way to our shiny new Hawaiian one.
Tumblr media
Had I been quicker into the queue, I might have got onto this very special private-hire city bus:
Tumblr media
On the way into the plane we were each given a bagged lunch and some earplugs. The C-17 is not designed for passenger comfort, and we would be flown south in close proximity to four enormous jet engines. The hearing protection was appreciated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were about ten rows of forward-facing seats in the plane, but I wanted the proper C-17 experience so I made my way to the line of lengthways seats behind them. We shared the fuselage with the cargo, and it became apparent why, once bags were checked, they weren't coming out again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just like on a commercial flight, we got the standard flight safety briefing, only our cabin crew were a pair of Guardsmen straight from central casting. Turns out, even on a C-17, the life vests are under the seats and are inflated by pulling on the toggle, but as there are no overhead lockers, the oxygen masks are in a compartment in the wall behind your head. Now you know.
Tumblr media
There were quite a few first timers on my flight, but it was obvious who the experienced polar travellers were, because they knew the most comfortable way to get some shuteye and got right to it. More sleepless ones had books or e-readers. The man next to me was reading quite an interesting history of the leadup to WWI from a naval perspective, but the book that most caught my interest (by which I mean, it made me laugh out loud when I saw the title) was a few seats up from me.
Tumblr media
It was a strange thing to take off on a plane with no windows. We evidently turned a few corners, and we seemed to taxi the entire length of the runway before turning around to take off, but when they hit the gas, WOW did we ever go!
I had noble intentions of polishing off a good chunk of Worst Journey during the five-hour trip down, but the suspense of the last few days and the early morning soon caught up with me, and I joined the sleepers instead. When I woke up, I noticed a cluster of people around the porthole aft of my seat. Had we reached Antarctica?
YES.
Tumblr media
Not long after this, we got the announcement that we were beginning our descent, so it was back to seats and on with ECW and seatbelts. For such an enormous bird, the landing was admirably smooth, and once all post-landing checks had been completed, the hatch was opened. Long before we felt the cold, we could see our breath in the air, as the moisture levels in the cabin met the declining temperature. I had read about how stepping off the plane was like walking into a wall of cold, so I'd put on my balaclava and goggles, but when my turn came to start down the gangway, I realised it was actually quite mild. Not what one would expect for being . . .
IN ANTARCTICA!
Tumblr media
A low ceiling of cloud obscured the tops of the mountains, but all the same I had much the same experience as I had when I first came out of the tunnel into Lyttelton, as suddenly all my reading and reference photos slammed into place. There was Observation Hill, and up along the Hut Point Peninsula a surprisingly large square promontory – that's why they call it Castle Rock! Windless Bight, White Island (it's white!) and Black Island (it's black!) and though I couldn't see its stripey dome, what was obviously the foot of Mt Discovery. And my feet, standing on the snow of the Barrier! I barely had time to be surprised how close everything was before our gaggle of shuffling scarlet penguins was ushered onto an enormous red people mover and we started our ride to McMurdo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The windows were above eye level but if I stretched up I could see out. It turned out this was not a an effective strategy, as within a few minutes they had fogged up and I could only see through a narrow strip at the bottom. That may have been the more exciting way to come in to town, as the teasing glimpses of turquoise pressure ridges and the piebald slopes of the Gap suggested more than they revealed.
We pulled up outside big blue Building 155, the hub of activity in McMurdo, and as I stepped out into the light flurry of snow, there was Observation Hill with the Polar Party's memorial cross positively looming over everything. My coordinator, who had worked tirelessly all through the summer to line up resources for my visit and calm me down every time there was a hiccup with my medical, met me with an enormous hug, and I had a little cry on her shoulder. Here I was at last.

Of Politics and Road Trips
Welp, it seems like the time has come to address one of the gnarliest and most frequently asked questions of all time.  To be clear, that's gnarly for me and to me, respectively.  I’d also like to memorialize a recent road trip.  Before I start, though, let’s get grounded in the current context: it’s late summer IN MARCH; We are headed intro autumn, and there has been enough early snow that Mount Hutt was open for skiing (what?!?!).  I started my new job at Jade Software; the kids started a new school year in January, with Anily headed off to her first year of high school (5 years of high school here); both kids have changed to a new soccer club, which is much closer to the house (thank god); Anily made the A team; James is playing soccer and basketball and ridiculous amounts of Fortnite.  It’ll soon be a year that we’ve been here. We are right in the middle of a full 12 weeks of visitors and trips from/to the US. And in case you were wondering, the cat has managed to escape through open windows and doors a few times, but he’s always come back so I guess he’s ours for real :-)
Tumblr media
I still haven't submitted my dreadfully complicated tax return.  I am seriously procrastinating, and having visitors and reasons to road trip is helping/hurting.
So!  BFGFAQ (big fat gnarly...you get it): It’s the political one.  From the Kiwis this usually comes in the form of “are you a Trump refugee?” or “what do you make of what’s going on over there?”  And even if it’s not an explicit question, how can I possibly answer the most frequent Q of all time -- “why did you move to New Zealand?” without considering how the political landscape of the US factored in?  I mean, you don't just up and move across the globe and leave a great place and a fabulous life without at least a mental checklist of pros and cons.  At least, most of us wouldn't.  And if you’re a grown-up (which we sadly have established that I am) and a contributing, aware, member of society (which I would argue that I am), your list must include considerations of the way your taxes are spent and people are treated in the place you live and how the outcomes of those things impact your lifestyle, your life, and the lives of other human beings.  Right? Right!
MAJOR UPDATE:  A handful of days after I posted this, someone (likely an asshole white supremacist) shot and killed people in a CHCH mosque.  The city is still in lock down as I write this.  It is terrible and sad that  things like this happen anywhere, ever.  And I just want to say that as you read the ideas below, I’ll be watching closely the response of the NZ government.
If there’s one thing that moving around the world to a place you’ve never been before, with a small family and no friends, and taking up a real life with a paycheck and a rent and a job does really well, it’s create an opportunity to reflect on the differences between where you were and where you are.  It also is extremely useful for considering, in a very real way, how the values you hold are (or are not) reflected in both a political system and a local way of living.  You really notice how political decisions, socioeconomic forces and cultural norms trickle into investments, infrastructure, bureaucracy, language, aesthetics, and interactions that impact you as you move through your day-to-day and learn how to get things done.  And because you’re an observer who is trying to become an insider, you may operate with less bias and pre- disposition to judge, more of a natural curiosity and interest in gathering information and then assimilating it and deciding over time. Chalk one up for perspective!  Happy to say this was the kind of experience and growth I hoped we’d all get through this adventure.
Now, from the Americans this question usually comes in the form of something like “OMG, are you so glad you’re not here for this?” or “are public healthcare and lack of gun violence really as amazing as they seem from here?”.  Because, like me, most people I talk with on a regular basis feel something like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
t least you do now, thanks to Willie Wonka’s and friend above, and this:
Tumblr media
So while I am not here in NZ without political bias or personal ideas of what’s right, wrong and important, I am more open minded to considering what’s good for this country and this context, and I have a stronger appreciation for the complexities of things all across the board since I’ve now gathered more data and had more experience.
So, my American friends, in the interest of helping you draw some of your own conclusions, here is a segment I like to call Fact, Figures and Feelings:
America is amazing.  You have SO much of everything.  Including great food, tons of money, vast political power, and a really noticeable amount of homeless people.  I mean!  When I was in San Jose I felt so conflicted by both where to go for every meal and the fact that to get where I wanted to go I was uncomfortable with my own feelings and anxiety about possible conflict with the homeless and mentally ill folks I passed constantly. And it was often while I was walking into a convention center full of people trying to give away millions of dollars, listening to speakers who had made millions through technology. And while the dog adoption station on site and the furry friends in it made me feel a little better in the moment, could there be anything more cliche? Embarrassing. And yet is it fundamentally bad to have cute dogs making rich people feel good and maybe getting adopted?  No.  But it maybe uniquely American.
Know what else you have a lot of, USA?  DRAMA.  Seriously.  The NZ morning news is usually about 25-50% reporting on the shitshow that is US and Brexit, and it turns out that when people say “if you get homesick, just listen to the news” they are correct.
So what about NZ?  Well, when you live in a country with SO MANY FEWER (like so many!) people and a much smaller GDP, your reality is very different.  Not so loud.  Not so busy.  Not so many options. Much much simpler and frankly, it feels more sane. But we know the Mexican food sucks.  So... six of one/half dozen of the other?  This is what I am saying: I cannot tell you if Enchiladas and Aveda products make up for dealing with the opioid crisis if you’re seeing it every day, or if leaving Tito’s vodka and a much higher salary on the table is balanced out by the fact that police here in CHCH carried guns last week and this is how people think about it:
Tumblr media
FUN FACT: During the “summer holidays” (December-Jan), the morning news show on public radio literally went off air.  They replaced it with special summer programming, mostly dedicated to personal profiles and reviews of music and activities.  The only headlines they read each day were almost entirely about the US (shut downs) and UK (Brexit).  Apparently it’s possible for time off to extend to politics and news.  WOW.  Just notice how you feel about that.
Now, NZ is certainly not the rainbows and unicorns utopia we liberals like to think a place with a public healthcare system and affordable education and far fewer guns will be -- there’s a growing imbalance in the distribution of wealth, the abortion laws are archaic, affordable housing is a big issue, nurses and teachers strike because they don’t get paid enough.
Politics was not the only motivator for our move, but we considered it -- sure seemed like a nice time to be out of the US, and it is.  It’s certainly not a clear #NZFTW-100% -they -nailed-it situation, though.  Every place and every system has its bad sides, and I have a lot to learn to really decide how the pros and cons balance out. All I know is that it’s really, really nice to be in a place where the political conversation is much simpler and more focused on politics and their outcomes on people than on hateful rhetoric. I am disappointed when I think of the lost opportunity due to the amount of resources you are wasting on unproductive, unkind conversations in the USA, when you have so much.  I feel bad for not being there to help stand up for the rights of people I believe in, but when you don't wake up angry every day at the headlines and the people you share space with, when the dialog is a little more open and productive, when the headlines are not so likely to be violent and sad, you start with a much better mental health baseline. You just can’t eat a great caesar salad whenever you feel like it, and it’s expensive as hell to leave the island and you don’t get paid enough to be able to do it often, which may really stress you out. For now, I’m really ok with it. But over time will the flaws in the NZ system (every system has them) outweigh the positive?  Do the opportunities in the US outweigh the negative?
In the interest of letting you form some your own opinions: Take a look at the the top headlines of 2018 in New Zealand.  They include a pregnant PM; visits from Ed Sheeran, the Royals, and Obama; a handful of natural disasters; a bunch of news about other countries and sports; and the BIG BIG Drama which “unfolded over several deeply uncomfortable days” and ended in a minister being briefly admitted to a mental health facility and broad discussions about mental health.  Consider if the US was as concerned about its politicians’ mental health when they did crazy shit :-).
Oh also, this is my CEO at work on Friday (hee hee):
Tumblr media
So far this year Lime Scooters (people get hurt on them, and people break the rules and double ride with no helmets -- gasp!) and the potential of a capital gains tax have been in the news pretty much daily. And that’s about it. Boring? Yes! Nice? Also yes! Did you know NZ is the only country in the OECD to not have a CGT? Are you impressed with my knowledge of initialisms? Worldly is the word you’re looking for to describe me.
Tumblr media
I know, it looks like I am pooping on a trail, but I am actually doing squats mid-hike IN A SKIRT.  Probably gives me enough credibility to become a world leader, or at least present these numbers for your consideration:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that you have something to think about -- because you weren't already thinking about politics enough (sorry!) -- let’s turn to a less political, but more important spiritual and philosophical topic: The Art of the Road Trip.
Pro tip: It’s easier to be a Road Trip Rembrandt with the right tools -- like these:
Tumblr media
Mountains + Vans = Roadtrip Masterpiece
I think I mentioned in an earlier post that one of the things we’ve been doing a lot of is road tripping. Not so different from Seattle, eh? True. But since we can surf so close to the house and we have such a beautiful country to explore and a slightly less active social life, the road trips are more frequent and more varied.  As we are all happiest when we’re in the flow and hitting the right balance between challenge and success, I guess it makes sense.  Because if I do say so myself, we are damn good at the road trip, but there’s no way to have 2 to 6 people in a small space with a lot of stuff and a windy road ahead and podcasts and music to choose without challenge.
Tumblr media
#vanlifeisthebestlife.
Here’s a map of where we’ve been on our travels thorough the country so far:
Tumblr media
So what’s the art of the road trip?  Composition:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the science?  One part great music, one part planning, and at least two parts having a sense of humor and joy about all the chaos.
Like when there’s no where for you to sit:
Tumblr media
My most recent road trips were extra awesome due to the fact that Leslie Lapham (AKA Alex, AKA LL) was here and we took off on a few fun adventures. Now, Leslie is great for a lot of reasons and it was super fun to have her here for 5 weeks...and one of her best qualities, she takes great pictures!
Here’s what I like to say about our first trip:  it started with a bang and ended with a bee sting.
Here’s the bang -- this is what happens when some dickhead decides to pass you on the right at high speed on a highway while you are TURNING RIGHT into a campground:
Tumblr media
So, that sucked.  Especially because aforementioned dickhead did not stop to see if we were ok, just left us there in the dark on our own. Luckily the Taupe Donkey was still drivable and packing enough duct tape to make it work.  So, off we headed from Kaikoura to make ourselves feel better in the vineyards and wineries of Marlborough.
Tumblr media
The Cloudy Bay Winery was not a bad place to spend an afternoon!
Tumblr media
Watson’s Way (not pictured) was a really weird place to spend a night though -- we were basically parked in a gravel parking lot in someone’s yard.  But man, did we have some good food!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although oops, I accidentally tried to take a grapevine as a souvenir.  And I swear this was before I even did a tasting!
After wine tasting and an amazing dinner at Arbor, we headed to the Marlborough Sounds, starting at Havelock, the mussel capital of the world!
We did a cool tour on the mailboat, which literally delivers mail, packages, animals, groceries, and god knows what else (possibly the odd tourist by accident?) to the residents of the remote 300 or so bays in the region, which can only be reached by boat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We ate a lot, of course.  But we ordered more than we could eat.
Tumblr media
After that we headed south on the inland route and camped overnight at the Tasman Lakes National Park.
Tumblr media
There were eels, pretty views, and random dock yoga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And last but definitely not least, we topped off the trip by meeting Jason at the always fabulous Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools.  What a drive to get there, too!  I did get stung by a bee while I was soaking, which was a total and pretty painful shock, despite the signs warning people to watch out for bees.  Little fuckers!
Tumblr media
After that, back to co-working and a couple weekends in CHCH:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then...Lois!!!
Tumblr media
Now this blog is not about all the visitors and it’s already so long I dare not start going on about having Leslie and Lois here together.  Suffice it to say we had some fun times, some great food, and after 8 hours in the emergency room we did a quick road trip to Oamaru.  There were PENGUINS!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were penguins!!! We saw them waddle onto the beach at dusk after swimming 50K through the ocean all day.  Alas, you cannot take pictures of them, so you’ll have to settle for 3 Generations of Wachsmuth Women in the Wild until next time.  XO.

65 Years Later, HOUSE OF WAX is Still Worth the Price of Admission
Sixty-five years ago, Warner Bros Studios released horror classic, House of Wax. A remake of Mystery of the Wax Museum, House of Wax was a big box office hit in 1953. Today, critics widely regard it as one of the best horror films from the 1950’s. On Rotten Tomatoes, the horror classic holds an impressive 95% ‘Fresh’ rating with 39 reviews. At the time of its release, House of Wax represented both a technological advancement and a slight narrative shift for the horror genre. It also launched the career of horror film legend, Vincent Price.
The Fine Line Between Genius and Madness
House of Wax tells the tragic story of Professor Henry Jarrod. A wax sculptor, Jarrod re-creates some of history’s most famous figures with passionate detail. When Jarrod refuses to give in to public demands for more shocking and lurid exhibits, his business partner sets the museum ablaze. Presumed dead, Professor Jarrod re-surfaces, confined to a wheelchair, and with a new wax museum. Not all is what it seems with Jarrod’s new exhibits. Some of the wax figures look a little too life-life. With people disappearing and a shadowy, horribly scarred figure stalking the streets at night, suspicions turn to Professor Jarrod.
A Bridge Between the Gothic Monster and Human Monster of Horror
Directed by Andre de Toth, House of Wax marked an interesting transition in the horror genre. By the late 1940s, Universal Studios and their Gothic monsters had given way atomic monsters and alien invaders. Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom were still several years away. de Toth incorporated many of the Gothic elements from the Universal Monsters’ films into House of Wax. The director makes maximum use of the film’s 1890’s New York City architecture and setting. In one of the film’s more impressive scenes, Price’s deformed Professor Jarrod stalks Carolyn Jone’s Cathy Gray through shadowy and twisty roads. The scene remains both visually stunning and effectively eerie.
In addition, Price’s Professor Jarrod is a sympathetic monster. Like the best Universal Monster, Professor Jarrod has a tragic arc from naive artist to depraved madman. The film’s climatic reveal immediately calls to mind Universal Studios’ Phantom of the Opera. Although de Toth telegraphs his reveal of Professor Jarrod’s disfigured face earlier in the film, it still proves to be a shocking moment. However, House of Wax also anticipated the shift the horror genre would take just several years down the road. The idea of a horribly scarred sculptor using real bodies to create his wax figures arguably set the groundwork for the human monsters that would eventually dominate the horror genre.
  Innovative For Its Time Period
youtube
With its release in 1953, House of Wax was the first Hollywood colour film to use 3-D technology. While 3-D technology is widely used today, the film-making technology went in and out of style in the 1950’s and 1980’s. Any one familiar with the 3-D in Friday the 13th Part III knows the technology was far from perfected. Despite being blind in one eye, director de Toth makes surprisingly effective use of the 3-D technique. The 3-D adds some fun to the film as well as depth to the viewing experience. A street performer using a paddle ball that jumps out from the screen illustrates how 3-D can and should be used. Perhaps the best example of de Toth’s incorporation of 3-D is scene where the killer’s shadow emerges and seems to run out of the screen at the audience.
Vincent Price, The Birth of a Horror Icon
Today, critics and fans alike regard Vincent Price as a horror legend. In the 1930s and 1940s, Universal Studios made horror legends out of Bela Lugosi, Boris Karlolff, and Lon Chaney Jr. Twenty years later, Hammer Films turned Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee into horror icons. Later, the 1980’s gave horror fans Kane Hodder and Robert Englund. House of Wax played an important role in launching Price’s career as a horror icon.
Yet prior to the release of House of Wax, Vincent Price was languishing in small, forgettable character roles. In spite of early success with supporting roles in film noir classics like Laura, Price’s career had stalled by the 1950’s. House of Wax was the first big box office success for Price in a starring role. More importantly, House of Wax marked Price’s first step into the horror genre. The transition would prove hugely lucrative for Price’s career. Following the success of Wax, Price would go on to collaborate with the likes of directors and producers like William Castle and Roger Corman.
From The House on Haunted Hill to The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Vincent Price enjoyed a long career in horror films. Some fans may even remember Price from his role on the obscure CHCH children’ program, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein.
  A Classic Worth Re-Visiting
Modern audiences may find House of Wax slow and its violence tame. It’s certainly a product of its time. But it remains an atmospheric and creepy triumph for its time period. For horror fans today, House of Wax is the perfect midnight movie for a rainy evening – a pure popcorn horror flick.

Happy Thursday everybody!
So it’s been a long month. No, year actually. But, since it’s finally coming to an end, I thought I’d use this post to reflect on the fun stuff, the pulls-on-your-heart-strings-but-makes-you-feel-warm-inside-stuff, and some overall good to know stuff that came of 2020.
First up, let’s shake things up and start with the good to know stuff. Did you know that many small business are making an effort to shift their business virtually? This year has hit everyone hard, but small business owners have definitely received a significantly harder blow. This holiday season, remember that supporting local means supporting a family. Give your money to those who will it will make the biggest difference for. We may be 6ft apart but we’re still close in heart! I found a few lists and resources that outline local and small business that have switched to offering their services and products online! Making it super easy to finish up Christmas shopping AND take part in something good.

Happy (safe) Shopping!
Next, we’ll visit some pulls-on-your-heart-strings-but-makes-you-feel-warm-inside-stuff. If there is one thing you take away from this blog I want it to be how much of a sucker I am for anything to do with 1) babies or 2) my amazing father. This story is a combination of both so get your tissues ready. My father passed away when I was 17. He had been diagnosed with advanced stage 5 lung cancer only 9 months before. It was heartbreaking. Losing him shattered my family into so many pieces we are still trying to put them back together even today, almost 5 years later. However, what I never expected was to meet him again. No I do not mean as a ghost, but rather an angel. An angel that was born November 30th, 2019 and shares his name. My very first nephew, named after my father. Little baby Adrian. If you had told me at any point in the past 5 years that such a tiny human being could mean so much to me, well, honestly I probably wouldn’t have argued. Last week this perfect little boy turned 1 and I felt not only proud to be his aunt, but so happy that I am able to be here to witness it. After losing my dad, I didn’t believe that I would ever be able to enjoy anything again without feeling guilty for being happy without him. That is not the case with baby Adrian. Every moment I get with him is a moment I treasure even more knowing my father will never get to. It’s just as much for him as it is for me. Holding my nephew makes me feel connected to my father in a way and now I think I finally understand what unconditional love is really about. I don’t think there’s anything in this world that will mean more to me than either of them. If you have someone in your life that makes your heart burst just thinking about them, give them a hug today, for me.

AND FINALLY! Some fun stuff!!
You’ll notice that I’ve included a video from a TikTok account, morganpaintsstuff. This is one of my favourite accounts I’ve discovered on the platform to date. I myself like to believe my imagination and creativity are one of my biggest strengths as an individual. This account sparked inspiration that I had failed to find for quite some time now. I used to paint and draw a lot, before the passing of my father, but now it seems I only pick up a brush when the entire world goes into lockdown. (Hopefully that won’t happen again anytime soon, fingers crossed.) But, every time one her videos finds its way onto my screen I happen to find a marker or a brush in my hand not too long after! Point is, if you have a hobby you used to enjoy doing but haven’t done in a while, this is your sign to start again. It’s never too late. Remember that when it comes to hobbies, there are no due dates, time constraints, or pressure when you’re doing something you love.
I hope you have a beautiful, magical, and triumphant day.
Stay safe, stay healthy, stay home.

   Time for genetics!
Breeds of Lombax: Plains Lombax - Common Desert Lombax - Rare Highlands Lombax - Uncommon Forest Lombax - Very Rare
Examples of these breeds: Alister Azimuth - Forest/Highlands hybrid Ratchet - Plains Topaz - High Content Desert Flame Copps - Forest
Defining traits of each breed:     Plains: Short fur, especially on ears. Pelt colors usually consist of browns, cinnamons, reds, ivories, and tans to blend with the environment. An alternate name is the “Savannah Lombax.” The Plains/Savannah Lombax is the most well-rounded of the breeds, able to go to any climate if they dress properly. The Plains/Savannah Lombax is the most common breed of Lombax and the best example of the species, often considered the “standard” Lombax in pelt type, ear type, tail style, stripe style, and pelt colors.
Desert: Very short fur, some to the point of being “hairless.” Ears are dished and have the unique ability to stand up to cool themselves in the high temperatures. A Desert Lombax cannot perk their ears for long, however. Tails are usually thin or naturally short and have little of the iconic tail fluff or lack it entirely.
Highlands: Highlands Lombaxes have thicker fur than the Plains Lombaxes and come in darker fur colors as well as a wider variety of pelts. They range from dark livers to vibrant chestnuts, to off-white tans. Their stripes range from black to dark grays to a darker variation of the base color. Their tails are longer than the standard Plains Lombax and have thicker fur, some males having long fur run under the entire length of their tail, sporting it like the Forest Lombax sports their manes.
Forest: Forest Lombaxes have the thickest fur of all the breeds, some males and, rarely, females having thick, majestic manes akin to a lion. These Lombaxes come in golds, yellow-golds, and red-gold(orange) with usually black or ginger stripes. A rarer “sub-species” of the Forest Lombax is the Black Forest Lombax, which is just a melanistic Forest Lombax. Their manes consist of their base fur color, their stripe color, or much darker variations of their base or stripe color. Some female Forest Lombaxes prefer dark or black manes in their mates over lighter colors.
Hybrids: Lombax hybrids(that are pureblood Lombaxes but hybrids of breeds) are unpredictable. If a Forest and a Desert Lombax were to have a cub, it could be a true hybrid in appearance, take only one gene from both sides(ex: Alister’s white/red pelt colors(Highlands) and his longer-than-normal fur(Forest)) or take after one parent entirely. Hybrids also tend to have higher risks for health problems, birth defects, or genetic mutations.
Base Genetics(applicable to all breeds):       Stripes:  Stripe Color: Gold Stripes - SS/Ss Red Stripes - ss  Masking Genes: Dark Stripes - DD Medium Stripes - Dd Light Stripes - dd  Stripe Direction: Forward Stripes(normal) - FF/Ff Backward Stripes -  ff  Masking Genes: No Stripes - NN/Nn Few Stripes - nn
Base Fur: Gold Base - GG/Gg White Base - gg    Masking Genes: Dark Base - BB Medium Base - Bb Light Base - bb
Pelt Mutations:    Full-body mutation(+eyes): Albinoism(+Blue eyes) - AA/Aa Melanism(+Dark brown eyes) - aa       Pelt Marking Mutations:  Piebald Mutations(white over eye = blue eye): Piebald Mutation Present - PP/Pp Piebald Mutation Absent - pp  Piebald Mutation Editors: Heavy Piebald: HH Medium Piebald: Hh Light Piebald - hh Symmetrical Piebald - MM/Mm Asymmetrical Piebald - mm   Van Mutations(white over eye = blue eye): High Van - VV Half Body - Vv Tuxedo - vv
Highlight Genetics:    Countershading(the lighter color at the muzzle, chest, ears, and tail tip): Countershaded - CC Light Countershading - Cc Solid - cc    Countershading Modifiers: High Countershading - EE Standard Countershading - Ee Low Countershading - ee    Countershading Colors: White - XX/Xx Light - xx       Note: A Lombax can have light Countershading and Low Countershading. A Lombax can also have a solid pelt yet High Countershading. It won’t show, however, because the High Countershading only modifies the Countershading gene if it is visible.
Tail Genetics:    Tail Length: Long Tail - TT Medium Tail - Tt Short Tail - tt  Tail Fluff: Tail Fluff - II/Ii No Tail Fluff - ii    Tail Fluff Modifiers: Thickness: Thick Tail Fluff - FF Medium Tail Fluff - Ff Thin Tail Fluff - ff   Length: Long Tail Fluff - JJ Medium Tail Fluff - Jj Short Tail Fluff - jj   Tail Fluff Color: Base Color(shows countershading) - LL/Ll Stripe Color (hides Countershading) - ll

September- Viv and Andy part 2
On my previous trip to New Zealand in 2008, I and my friends spent a crazy month driving around the whole country with multiple stops and lots of road time, this time round I wanted to spend less time in the car and more time doing things. Top of Viv and Andy’s list was Whale watching in Kaikoura which is on the South Island near Christchurch. With our base in Auckland we decided to fly down meaning maximum time doing stuff and no long days hauling ass down the country. Domestic travel is super easy in NZ so I booked us some last minute fights to Christchurch  for the Monday and with no plans till the next day we were able to take our time and minimise travel stress.
We got in mid-afternoon and with google maps in hand tried to work out where our hostel was in relation to the airport, fairly typically I remember it being the opposite side of town, but decent buses and small bags meant it wasn’t too much of a hardship. We stayed at a youth hostel near the botanical gardens in a 3 person room, I guess meant for a family with one child, Viv and I hadn’t shared a room for a good few years so that was a bit weird; but it was comfy enough and we were going to be out most of the time anyway. After a quick freshen up, and a mini google, we headed back out to find somewhere to eat, Monday night in a big city, shouldn’t be too hard eh?
The town centre was absolutely dead. The shopping streets were clean and well-kept with big high street brands, wide streets with multiple pedestrian crossings and yet no people around except us. There didn’t appear to be any little bars dotted around, no bustling restaurants, the only place we found that had a few restaurants/bars in one location was dark and shut up. Perhaps this is different at the weekend, but it gave a slightly abandoned vibe, since the 2011 earthquake it seems lot of people left town for safety/work/the ability to drive on roads that hadn’t collapsed; and really you can’t blame them. We eventually found a small place that was one of those airstream caravans with a heated outdoor seating area that did burgers and pints of beer, by this point we were pretty hungry so it would have been good but honestly, I remember it being particularly good. On the way back to the hostel we passed a giant old school joystick controller mounted in the pavement which was linked with a large screen on the side of a building, with this you could play a giant game of space invaders. Again, we were the only people around in the streets so we played undisturbed for some time; although Andy was the only one good at it so after a while we gave up.
We were picked up Tuesday morning by a local man with a van who drove us all the way up to Kaikoura for the day, it’s about a 3 hour journey so a lot of driving for a day trip, but if you wanna see whales, Kaikoura is where you need to be. It was also really great to have a local drive us as we didn’t know much about the earthquake, save what had been on the news, so getting his insight and experience was sobering but important. On the way out the city, he pointed out some of the local sights that were no longer there, including the CTV building that completely collapsed leading to 115 of the 185 deaths in the disaster. The roads up the coast were also all twisted and broken having been fixed up slowly over the previous 7 years, at one point completely undriveable due to landslides and collapse. They took a long time to be fixed to the point of everyday use partly due to the extensive damage but also lack of money in region (Canterbury is quite a large area to share a budget).
Looking into the earthquake, the reason it was so devastating was three fold:
1)      It measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, the epicentre was only 6 and half km from the city centre and it was shallow. This meant there was simultaneous vertical and horizontal ground movement, with eye witness accounts describing people being ‘tossed in the air’ as well as increased liquefaction causing more ground movement, undermining many building foundations.
2)      There had been 2 large quakes in 2010, one measuring 7.1, which had already weakened some buildings and infrastructure in and around the city.
3)      It was midday so the city centre were full
We made our way fairly slowly up the coast with a bit of chat and narration, over the last 7 years despite the money problems, a lot of work had been done to make these roads passable. Highways in New Zealand are pretty much all single lane and in most places it’s the only road, so with highway 1 out of commission there is no way north from Christchurch without going across to the west coast and back again (a 400km dogleg.) We were booked on a whale tour in the early afternoon and arrived with just enough time to have a loo stop and a quick drink before heading out; we had to watch a health and safety video first which was basically, boat go fast/sit down. The company then took us the last bit of the way to the harbour and onto the boats which were catamaran style and set up inside with swish bucket seats. The boat was pretty full with what seemed to be one large group of Chinese tourists so if we had any hope of getting 3 seats together and by the window we needed to be quick; I knew from experience that I get a bit sick so having somewhere to sit inside where you can still see the sea is useful. After another small health and safety talk (boat fast/sit) we were on our way; most of these tours have the ‘if we don’t see anything we’ll book you on another tour’ policy which isn’t always great coz people don’t tend to hang around Kaikoura for more than the day they’re booked, but it does mean the company would lose money so they really want to see something as much as we do.
Sick as a dog, I spent the whole time sitting outside on the back staring at the horizon coz I was told staring at a stationary line can help (it didn’t) but I made it through without spewing so I call that a win. We didn’t see much to begin with but these boats are set up with all sorts of underwater gadgets so they can try to identify where whales can be located. Kaikoura sits at the southern end of the Hikurangi trench which has depths of 3km very close to shore which has led to a large number of deep sea species ending up here; this food source is pretty irresistible to whales and so unlike a lot of places they can regularly be seen within a short distance of the coast. The boat sent out a pulse thing and the responding squeaks gave us a heading and eventually we came upon some sperm whales; the sickness subsided for a few minutes so I could watch and take some pics. To be honest, the whales were great, but even just being on the sea and looking back across the southern alps was amazing enough to justify the days travel, I’ve never heard my sister exclaim as much as our drive up once we got near the mountains. We returned to the harbour and were met by our driver who took us into Kaikoura for our included fish supper, having felt sick for the last few hours a giant pile of chips with decent ketchup was literally the best.
On our journey back we went at our own pace stopping for photos across Kaikoura, the southern alps and the pacific ocean; every one suitable for display like most of the south island. We also came across roughly a billion seals lying on spits of rock right next to the coastal road who were totally unfazed by our proximity and were, I swear, posing. The main bulk of the journey back we spent listening to our own things, I’m pretty sure I had the newest episode of ‘My dad wrote a porno’ which I was trying to get through without disturbing the driver or laugh so hard he asked what I was listening to. Having consulted my guests, we cannot remember what we did that night so it was clearly super important but having had a long day I’m sure we just flopped into bed.
Our flight back wasn’t until the evening so we had the whole day to play with in Christchurch; I wanted to go to the earthquake memorial which was a short walk through town. I had been the CHCH briefly in 2008 but only stayed for a half day due to time constraints so I don’t really remember what it looked like; I only really have a picture in my head of an old cathedral with a spire on a square. This, as it turns out, was the famous Christchurch cathedral who’s spire fell in 2011 and still wasn’t safe for visitors so they had built a ‘transitional cathedral’ while they fixed up the original. This was right next to the earthquake memorial so we were able to see both; the memorial ‘185 empty white chairs’ is a sombre little patch of grass on a junction with a bunch of chairs all painted white to represent the 185 people that lost their lives. The chairs are all different and range from wicker to kitchen to office to wheelchair, there’s even a baby carrier as sadly there were some children who died. There is discussion of how to make this memorial permanent as the chairs are just made of normal chair material and have required some upkeep and painting since 2012; I think it’s totally worthwhile as it’s a poignant reminder of the 5th worst disaster in NZ history.
After lunch we still had some time so we headed to the Canterbury museum in the botanical gardens, here there was a large exhibition on Antarctic exploration as a number of famous expeditions have taken off from CHCH. Now people tend to travel from Chile or Argentina as it’s a shorter journey by sea and they come to the Antarctic Peninsula which has a lot of wildlife, however, what’s-his-name Scott and thingy Shackleton didn’t know this in advance so left from NZ on a few trips. I don’t remember what else was in the museum but we did head to the café for a cuppa and large piece of cake before retracing our steps from a few days earlier and heading to the airport. I was really hoping for us to get back in time for my regular Wednesday night pub quiz at Zac’s bar; we just about made it only missing the first round. As we were 3 extra we had to form our own team so Canterbury UNT were not the same size as all the other teams put together; I don’t remember how we did but I’m sure we won. Right?
