there are two wolves inside of me, the one that wishes for sydcarmy to develop in the most unconventional way. i'm talking kisses they completely ignore, staying the night, sharing clothes, calling each other in the middle of the night. together in all the ways but just not verbally defined. hardcore yearning and being complete idiots. the others having to spell it out for them that they're literally in love with each other. And it still taking months, years for it to marinate and stick in their brains

the other, where sydney has lost her trust in carmy and it will take a lot of proactiveness and grovelling for it to be repaired. angry, tunnel visioned for that star. puts her career and ambitions first. her insecurities in the limelight. deep in denial of her feelings. she's kicking and screaming.at her most avoidant, trying to run away from whatever this thing is with carmy. she herself is sydcarmys number one enemy. going completely bonkers. carmy, way more aware of his feelings but never wanting to cross the line with sydney, he'll take whatever she gives him. fearful that he'll lose her again.

Context - doing a mini ask game for hitting 500 fic recs

6. How do you find new fic to rec?

Most of my ficrecs come direclty from AO3 searches. During the pandemic lockdowns I made pretty detailed notes for hundreds of fics. That's where the majority of my fic recs are from.

For fics written after April/May 2021, again from AO3 but generally I get a head start by looking at word of mouth recs on Reddit/Tumblr or author bookmarks or checking what's new from the authors I am subscribed to.

8. How do you make a rec list?

This process has changed a lot for me. How I made my first list is totally different from how I make lists now. I am going to describe the process I use now. Trust me it's loads better than what I was doing in the beginning!

I make themed rec lists generally. Sometimes I make one off detailed recs but that's rare. Everything I am going to be talking about are going to be about themed rec lists.

1. Starting - Read fics from authors you are subscribed to/tags you follow on AO3. Depending on how much time you have for fandom you probably want to adapt this. When I am short on time, I just read subscribed authors. When I have more time, I read the SS/HP tag. If I have tons more time like during the pandemic lockdowns, I read the Snape character tags instead of just pairing tags.

2. Finding the theme - I generally get a vibe about what's unique about a fic/a stand out trope when reading. This is the hardest part honestly. Because sometimes you can read tons of fic w/o really feeling you identified a theme. But once you get the theme, you are golden!

3. Searching - Now you can start looking for other fic matching that theme. If you are good at searching on old sites like LJ or if you can use Wayback archives you are going to come up with unique older fics. But that's like an advanced option. You can make awesome rec lists just with AO3 fics w/o using other archives.

But you need a search strategy. Sorry to sound corporate. But it is true. Search strategy comes from your list goals! Sorry to sound even more corporate. But it is also true.

List goals can be like "I want to rec 10 infidelity fics with most kudos... I want to rec 10 OTP fics written from 2001-2003... I want to rec 10 timetravel fics which are WIPs..." Once you are really clear about your list goals you can use that to control your AO3 searches and life's going to be good.

4. Filtering - In a large fandom you are still going to end up with 100s of fics for your search strategy. Are you going to read everything? Depends on how much time you have for this/what quality you want the list to be. I generally like getting lists out because that way they are helping somebody instead of waiting to do it perfectly right. But you do you! Personally I filter pretty hard at the summaries. You can do that with the tags if the list is about a trope. I don't look at tags/stats personally because I feel that misses out on a lot of really good untagged fics or imported fics from other archives. One of my goals with reccing is to give some spotlight to fics which will go unnoticed otherwise.

5. Final selection - Once you read your fics you need to make a hard call about picking which fics to rec out of the fics you read. This was something I had a lot of angst over in my early lists. But it doesn't really matter. Don't stress about it. I don't stress about it now! If a fic doesn't make it to this list it's going on your next lists. That's it. If you don't ever make another list that's cool too! Because you got one list out and that's more than most people do! Fandom is for fun. Just don't put pressure on yourself for these things. Give reccing a chance. If you don't like it, NBD! <3

After the unrestricted office access, and the flowers, and the surprise visits to Catco, everyone just kinda starts to assume Kara and Lena are dating, and maybe they should let them. (AKA, Lena and Kara really just date whilst pretending they're fake dating).

A sort of retelling of S2 under the premise that Lena and Kara went to college together and dated.

They are still in love obvs. They work through their shit respectively, especially Lena. Then they get back together. I loved how their dynamic, connection, love was written. Flashbacks to when they were together in college. Angst-meter on a low medium. Fluff. Loved every one of the 365,562 words. Must read.

Everyone says not, but Kara's gut wants to tell her otherwise. As Lillian's plot tries to pull them all under, Lena is dragged into it more than she ever wanted to be.

"It's just one week, okay?" Kara pulls Lena back in, warm hands slipping lower and grazing the skin beneath Lena's t-shirt, and. It's not fair how much Lena's heart flutters at the touch. "We just do a couple interviews, take a few pictures, and then we go back to our own lives. It'll be simple. Easy. Promise."

OR, a [Fake Dating AU] in which Kara rescues Lena from an underwater cave, it turns into one of the biggest media frenzies of the year, and they somehow get branded America's Sweetest Couple by the public. Except, they're not actually a couple, they're divorced.

An all time favorite of mine. And my favorite of her fics, def check out her other works tho, they are all incredibly good. She is a master of emotion. This one’s perfection all the way trough. Hurt/comfort, happy ending. I don’t know this story just pulls you into like the most comforting hug, always makes me feel better when I am down.

Then she takes a slow step forward, and then another, and suddenly she's close-up in Kara's space, silky hair draped over her shoulders, with her flowery perfume and long lashes and her exposed neck craned in the direction of Kara's mouth. Suddenly, Lena's heart is drumming, beating so fast, so fucking loud, that Kara feels like she has a heartbeat herself, feels like it's slugging against her chest wall thick enough to match the tension in the air.

Suddenly, Kara's fangs pop out and she... sighs. Because they both know what it means when it happens involuntarily.

Kara, perhaps out of a want for thoroughness in her story, perhaps out of a Millennial-born urge to creep on a the social media of a woman she finds intriguing, discovers that Lena Luthor has a pretty active following on Instagram one afternoon not long after their first meeting. She debates it, just for a moment, before following Lena.

They all get to be a little more grown up and have more agency than they get on the show. There is something brewing on the horizon.

Lena Luthor doesn't plan to have any kids. Or to get married, even, really. After the revelation that she is actually of Luthor blood after all, she's quite set on ending the family line with her and not taking the risk of any more drama.

Then Lorelai L. Danvers crashes into her life, claiming to be her seventeen year old daughter from the future.

A fandom classic. Its a character-study in a way, but first and foremost a homage to the fandom and fanfiction in general. If you read anything of this fic let it be the love letter to fanfiction she wrote at the end, because it changed the way I consume fanfiction and made me appreciate it even more. She also edited it to a book-formate! A must read.

lena's love wanes and waxes like the moon going through its phases. it comes and goes in eighths and fourths and thirds and halves and wholes. there's always going to be a part of her heart in kara's possession, a part she willingly gives and doesn't expect back. it's stopped hurting around the time lena threw herself into academics and she's learned, at her most optimistic, to savor the rush her love gives her.
