The real furlough update.

Since being off for vacation and then furloughed, I:

finished rehousing 3500+ CDs into slim polyester archival sleeves (I did about 1000 of those in November-December)

arranged those CDs and all of our DVDs into two beautiful CD storage units and discovered that I need to buy two more of the narrower units to accommodate the special collections, various artists, and allow for room for growth

moved all the loose action figures (not including the Pop ones) into the larger display case we got last year

unpacked and arranged the real collections -- FINALLY -- in the smaller (matching) display case we got last year (buying these display cases were the whole reason the CDs had to be compacted). These collections were inherited from my parents after their deaths and I’ve been wanting to give them a proper display case so that I can monitor the temperature and humidity environments like the GLAM professional I am.

set up the audio cassette digitization station and have been digitizing rare or personal recordings ever since. It’ll also be used for digitizing the microcassettes, minidiscs, and eventually LPs. Yes, digital cultural heritage is my work, so you shouldn’t be surprised.

had a sad because I digitized the answering machine tape from my junior year in college and found a message left for my mom from a former neighbor, asking her to thank my grandmother for the delicious sushi she placed as a thank you in the rice cooker that she borrowed from said neighbor. All three women are now deceased.

then I found a message with my father’s voice from when a work colleague of his called to let him know there’d been a fire in the store (he was a regional store manager) and he’d picked up the phone so the machine recorded their whole conversation.

burned the yahrzeit candle for dad (been 8 years now)

wrote my senators and congressman, which doesn’t do much good as I agree with them/they agree with me that the fucking cheesewaffle doesn’t need a wall, it’s a waste of money and time

switched from calling the failure in the white house a cheeto to calling that travesty a cheesewaffle.

mailed a baby shower gift to a work colleague since we missed her baby shower due to this furlough and she’ll be on maternity leave before we get back.

learned the sad news that another work colleague died this week.

paid the bills with the last paycheck I’ll be seeing for the near future. I hope it’s near future, that is.

used a razor blade and elbow grease to clean about 4-5 years’ worth of accumulated hard water deposits off the granite counter tops in our bathrooms, as well as all of the hard water and soap scum off the glass in the shower (took most of a day and boy was it super satisfying)

finished my first full pass of weeding out the clothes for donation (I still had the main closet after last year but NOW THAT IS DONE. I had jeans that were low rise and bell bottom flares, I’ve had shit for so long)

lined approximately 12 drawers and shelves so now they smell beautiful (or at least not like old house)

started to re-teach myself calligraphy with fountain pens (I have some seriously pretty ink now, not just india ink)

changed the deadbolt on the front door to keyless entry

learned how to make multiple variations on sesame noodles and have been having that often with nitamago (which I learned to make last year) for lunches, because it’s cheap and delicious

have done about 10 loads of laundry. at least.

filed the papers sitting on my desk since May 2018

decorated for Christmas and then took down the decorations

How do I remember all this (and what other projects I have)? Well, I started keeping a bullet journal just so I keep motivated to get things done. Seems to be working so far. I’ll bet I stop doing it when I go back to work.

What I have NOT been doing, for fear of losing momentum is:

Binge watching streaming tv (although I’m two episodes into fellow alum’s A Discovery of Witches so might make an exception)

Playing video games (I did spend 10 hours on Megaquarium and long to return), but so far have resisted turning on Beat Saber

Reading (although I really want to)

But that might change if we don’t go back this coming week. I still have quite a few projects to tackle, but some will require pulling apart entire rooms and I don’t want to be in the middle of that and have to suddenly go back to work. If there’s one thing that is really apparent in the whole furlough thing, it’s that when I’m working, I have precious little energy to put towards projects or even meal planning. No wonder I get nothing done during the year. :/

Surprise upside to the furlough: I am able to actually fit in time to sleep 7 - 8 hours a day and am not stressed about work, so the blood sugar readings have been super nice and always on target.

I also no longer just joke about retiring early. I could very much keep myself occupied for at least a year with all my projects. I mean, those 5 Nerf guns aren’t going to paint themselves.

Final thought: I completely understand that I am a lucky one, though. My husband hasn’t been furloughed and we have a good chunk saved up (although the roof has several leaks now and so this will be an expensive house repair year, yikes!), so we can weather this furlough for a bit. Many of my colleagues and none of my contractors can’t, so for them I am most worried.

I also don’t find myself bored often, or without purpose just because I don’t have a job to go to. Yes, there is a small part of me that rankles at the “nonessential” part of this furlough, but also being in cultural heritage, I know how essential my work is, even though it’s invisible to the rest of the world. If I wasn’t in this situation, I would be super stressed indeed, and taking advantage of all the discounts that the retail/restaurant establishments are giving for furloughed workers. Because I am not, though, I’m happy to pay full price so others don’t have to. Anyway. Time to get back to digitizing.
