queen of tears is going to cure me~ episode 1 summary and ramblings
Kim Soo Hyun has a penchant for playing what I saw someone playfully describe "the colorblind man". Obviously the term is not referring to the actual medical condition, but rather his willingness to either not see or ignore the red flags associated with the 99.5% looks like they would kill you and 0.5% is a cinnamon roll-esque girl boss. These girlies are the ones that society deems to be villains because of their arrogance and abrasiveness. However, these "Evil Queens" are Kim Soo Hyun's "Snow Whites" because, by the end of the show, he will be fixing their unprocessed childhood trauma with the power of true love. Hong Hae In (played by the wonderful Kim Ji Won) is the recent addition to a long list of women which include Ko Moon Young, Cheon Song Yi, and Cindy.
Tumblr media
In Queen of Tears, Kim Soo Hyun plays Baek Hyun Woo, who serves as the legal counsel for the Queen Group In the opening scene, Hyun Woo is asked to recount how he met his wife Hong Hae In, the current CEO of Queen Department Stores and a chaebol heiress. He met Hae In for the first time when she was working as an "undercover" intern. While his other colleagues are miffed by her obnoxiousness and indifference towards their work, Hyun Woo tries his best to help her and even goes as far as telling her that she needs to step up her game because he's worried that she will be fired for her performance. When Hae In asks him to reflect on why he feels that way, we see Hyun Woo confess his feelings for Hae In in one of the funniest ways ever seen in kdrama history. Completely oblivious to the fact that Hae In is a multimillionaire, Hyun Woo offers a pragmatic declaration of his love by listing his academic qualifications, his ability to pay rent on his studio apartment, and even the fact that his family owns "35 cows". Hae In is amused and flattered by the proposal and the rest is history. When Hyun Woo discovers Hae In's true background, he freaks out and resigns his job. Despite this, Hae In literally chases after him in a helicopter and promises to "never make him cry".
Tumblr media
After nearly three years of marriage ,Hyun Woo and Hae In's relationship has become a shadow of its former self. While in public, Hyun Woo and Hae-In's marriage is lauded as the "marriage of the century" and a stunning example of a progressive South Korea where love can overcome class and social boundaries, Hyun Woo and Hae In are in nothing but a loving relationship. They sleep in separate beds, eat breakfast as far as they can from each other, and are constantly at odds with each other at work.
Tumblr media
Complicating the tension between the two are their surroundings. They live in a multigenerational mansion with the rest of Hae In's family and their "work" and "personal" lives become intertwined. For their chaebol family, every personal decision is also a calculated business one that can impact their investments and prestige. In these conditions, as the outsider, Hyun Woo receives the shorter end of the stick in their marriage. At work, he is routinely degraded at work by Hae In when their opinions do not align and at home, his in-laws treat him like a second class citizen ordering him around like an employee rather than their son-in-law. For example, in one scene, we not only see the family members forcing the couple to have a child but they also insist that the child's surname be Hong (mother's last name) rather than Baek (traditional father's last name). Throughout all of this, Hyun Woo's humiliation is exacerbated by the fact that Hae In never appears to stand for him and is complacent to all the verbal and emotional abuse he faces from their family. While all of these scenes are shown with a splash of comedy, they also convincingly convey Hyun Woo's desire for a divorce even if it must be paid with an immense cost.
Tumblr media
With much of Episode 1 conveyed through Hyun Woo's point of view, it is tempting to brand Hae In as a terrible wife. However, we are offered glimpses that suggest her feelings towards Hyun Woo are far more complicated. For instance, shortly after the scene where Hyun Woo is bossed around by her family, she privately confronts her younger brother for being disrespectful towards Hyun Woo. Such actions are accompanied by moments where we do see that she yearns for him and is hurt by his disdain towards her and their marriage. However, like many of her tsundere male counterparts, she struggles immensely with emotional transparency. Instead of engaging in heartfelt communication, she resorts to offering cold blasé remarks, which gaslight Hyun Woo's genuine concern and anger.
Tumblr media
What is interesting about the world that Queen of Tears creates is that the protagonist does not benefit from male privilege. In fact, many rigid patriarchal practices are subverted in the drama. For instance, instead of the bride moving into the husband's marital home, the opposite occurs when Hyun Woo relocates from his family's farm to the Queen's Mansion. There are also other notable examples such as the insistence of Hae In's family to take the maternal surname, which contrasts the default cultural practice of taking your father's last name and their unique custom of forcing the men who married into their family to prepare the dishes for their memorial service. These scenes not only highlight the unique interplay between gender and socioeconomic but also force the viewers to reckon with the patriarchy. It is jarring to see the roles flipped and it makes us question how displacement, abuse, and oppression are normalized for married women in Asian societies. As a South Asian, many of Hyun Woo's experiences parallel the stories frequently recounted by my own mother, aunts, and grandmothers.
With only one episode, it's hard to discern whether this set up solely exists for comedic shock value or whether the show is making a` genuine social commentary. If the latter is true, I am excited to see how the writers will utilize this theme in moving the plot forward. For Episode 2, I am also intrigued to see how the cliffhanger in Episode 1 will be addressed. Is Hae In telling Hyun Woo the truth or is this her twisted way of her testing his love? Who knows, but I know for sure that Queen of Tears will make me anticipate the weekend more than I usually do!

Drama rec masterlist | Drama rant thread (beware of spoilers)
Tumblr media
I had so much fun watching this drama. It's one of those dramas where Tumblr just forms this little community around a drama as it airs, and I was lucky enough to be able to be a part of it almost from the very beginning.
This drama had so many twists and turns and cliffhangers, and I had such a good time freaking out over everything with people on here.
The drama was actually genuinely funny, and though I may not have laughed out loud, I definitely found myself doing the huff laugh a lot. They knew what they were doing, and the jokes just landed every single time.
It does get dark at times too though, and I do have to make a trigger warning for blood, murder, mental illness, self-harm, suicides and just a very uncomfortable and creepy villain.
Jeong Gu-won is not the brooding, gloomy type of male lead you might think when reading what the drama is about. Instead, he's a drama queen with a flair for fashion. He's childish and whiny, but also openly caring and loving - very golden retriever coded, actually. It sounds weird, but it really works so well for this drama.
And oh my god, I love Do Do-hee so much. She's a boss ass bitch when she needs to be, but is actually just as much a whiny drama queen as Gu-won. She knows what she wants and will do whatever it takes to get it, but also knows when it's time to stop and take a step back.
And the two of them are such a good match! Petty and childish, all with their own huge baggage of trauma that they help each other unpack. And they usually communicate their feelings well with each other. The drama doesn't rely on miscommunication as a way to create drama - if something happens, they resolve it almost immediately, and I love that.
The overall murder-mystery and who-did-what managed to throw things at me that I sometimes didn't see coming, which was nice.
If I do have to say something more negative, the drama does at times feel a little superficial in a way I can't quite explain. I did see some people complain about the same - that it felt plastic sometimes. And they do make some decisions - especially towards the last half of the drama - that I might not really be 100% into. The first half of the drama is definitely the best part.
But overall, I still had such a good time watching, and it's definitely one I'll rewatch again someday.

what other work from park ji eun did you enjoyed? do you think queen of tears will surpass any of them for you?
CLOY, legend of the blue sea, and the producers are all fun and iconic in their own ways, but my love from the star is just.........there's no words for what that drama means to me and how it changed my life. like, idk if the impact of that drama can ever be recreated. just one of those lightning in a bottle things. cheon song yi and her neon lipstick and do min joon in his skinny pants and justin bieber hair will forever be in my heart. a right of passage kdrama!! had us all in a chokehold in '13/'14!
idk if QOT can surpass that level of nostalgia i have for MLFTS but i will say, the writing has already done that imo. MLFTS was the silly chaotic fun i needed back then, but QOT is exactly what i need in 2024.

Marking its third anniversary this year, the "Korea Children's Grand Prize" is an award ceremony that is selected by the only child in Korea who participates in the entire process from candidate recommendation to award for people and organizations that have contributed to the promotion of children's rights. On this day, the Green Umbrella Children's Foundation's Children's Rights Advocacy Group "Greens" participated in the award and delivered the trophy to the winner, and Kim Myo-joo presented a congratulatory speech as a representative of the nation's child judges.

These 5 K-Drama Series Should Be On Your List
if you're looking for some seriously binge-worthy K-dramas, you've come to the right place. We've got a list of recommendations that will have you hooked from the first episode.
1. Sweet Home
Tumblr media
When I watched this television series, it was very intense. Cha Hyun-soo moved out of his house and into an apartment after a family tragedy. Monsters start to show up shortly after. While people inside the building were trapped, the residents of the apartment became aware that monsters were everywhere outside. Hyun-su and the other residents of the building defend themselves in an effort to live as long as they can. The scenes were so intense that you didn't know what would happen in the next episode. There were also jump scares in the movie, and the actors were good. If you want to watch it with your family, friends, and bae, this might be a good recommendation for you to watch.
This television show was extremely intense to watch. You will be kept on your toes of what would happen in the next episode because the scenes were so intense. The actors were excellent, and the film included some jump scares. One of the characters in this film caught my heart. The movie is made more hardcore with the background music, and the story flowed inn a  very interestingly in one of the best scenes. And I'm aware that this TV show matches my current state of mind. It might be a good idea for you to watch this with your family, bae. this might be a good recommenndation for you to watch.
2. My Love From The Star
Tumblr media
My Love From the Star is all about a girl who fall in love with an alien boy has been stranded on Earth for more than 400 years is almost able to return home, but finds himself developing feelings for a famous actress, Do Min Joon has to leave earth because if he doesn't then he will die, but love has to go on. So he comes to earth time to time for Cheon Song Yi after recharging himself in his planet. The duration of his stay on earth increases each time. The viewers are happy that one day he will be able to stay on earth forever.
This television show was extremely intense to watch. You will be kept on your toes of what would happen in the next episode because the scenes were so intense. The actors were excellent, and the film included some jump scares. One of the characters in this film caught my heart. It might be a good idea for you to watch this with your family, bae. this might be a good recommenndation for you to watch
3. Itaewon Class
Tumblr media
This television series tells the story of an ex-con (Park Sae Roy), a somewhat oddball but extremely honest and fair man, who loses everything due to his bad connections with Jangga, the chairman of a powerful corporation, and his son. This chairman keeps making life difficult for him as he attempts to rebuild his life from scratch because he wants to bring him to his knees.
Park Seo Joon's acting and the series' originality greatly impressed me. It undoubtedly established itself from other, more popular series. It was also quite helpful because it shows how a business is put together and the kinds of tools needed for advertising, marketing, and raising capital. I would recommend this series if you’re looking for a refreshing series to watch that seperates itself from the cliché love story that you usually watch since our mc is dense as hell to the feelings of girls around him.
4. Legend Of The Blue Sea
Tumblr media
This TV show is quite intriguing. Which   previously been seen several times by me. A mermaid travels to Seoul in search of the human guy she loves. The story is quite good and doesn't drag like some other dramas.
The two narratives of the drama alternate between those taking place in the present and the Joseon era. The historical portion contains a brief flashback that tells us about the pasts of our protagonists. The story of the romance between mermaid Se Hwa and human Dam Ryung is slowly revealed during the drama. The main action occurs in the present, when their contemporary selves reconnect and renew their romance.
5. I Am Not Robot
Tumblr media
I'm not a robot drama story, is all about a woman named Jo ji-ah or also known as aji-3, becomes entangled in a strange love triangle and because of pretending, she fell in love with the man who lives a luxurious life but has an illness of being allergic to human contact named Kim Min-kyu. Pretending didn't last long and Kim Min-kyu later found out everything because of a special necklace that kim Min-kyu gave to aji-3 before clicking the reset button but despite of that Kim Min-kyu still forgive Jo ji-ah and love cured his illness of being allergic to human contact and they both live a normal and happy life.
It has many lessons that will truly teach us as well as the sweetest ending I've ever seen. As for the emotions I experienced while watching, I felt very excited and curious because every episode makes me wonder what will happen next. It's almost as if the drama was foreshadowing what would happen so ending, which makes me more interested in what will happen so ending. I'll keep watching even if it's too late at night because the creativity of that drama really caught my attention.
So, there you have it, our top K-drama recommendations for your next binge-watch session. Trust me, these shows are lit and you won't regret giving them a chance. Happy watching!
