Why does my toddler keep climbing on everything?⁣ ⁣ It’s part of the ORIENTATION schema!⁣ They are learning about spatial awareness, force, weight, and the abilities of their body. They are building gross-motor skills and developing risk taking skills that will actually help prevent injuries as they get older. ⁣ ⁣ “So I just let them climb the 6 foot high bookshelf? Ok 😳?!”⁣ ⁣ No! There is actually developmental benefits to most of what children do everyday, all day. It’s just hard for a lot of adults to see that learning because it looks like mess and trouble to us. So in this case, you can provide opportunities for safe climbing. Children who are focused on the Positioning schema also tend to enjoy positioning other items so collections of things like blocks, peg people, little logs, even stuffies. They also tend to enjoy boxes as this schema is often combined with the Enveloping and/or Enclosing schemas, as well. ⁣ ⁣ If they are climbing to jump off, they may be more focused on the Trajectory schema so you can provide safe opportunities for jumping off and onto things, and safe items to throw. Warning, hard blocks are not always the best toy for a child focused on the trajectory schema so try to provide things that can be thrown instead of constantly trying to stop throwing.⁣ ⁣ 5 items that support these schemas that you can find around the house⁣ 1. Cardboard boxes, big and small⁣ 2. Rolled up socks⁣ 3. Pillows⁣ 4. Laundry baskets⁣ 5. Small towels⁣ ⁣ Want to learn more about toddlers? #TherapyThursday - #Kindergarten today ignores a basic fact of young children’s development that is well-known by early childhood educators: normal development in young children occurs at very different rates and in very different ways...and definitely requires acceptance of/integrating more self-directed, creative/play time to help access and increase our understanding! We need to respect children’s individual developmental timelines. The idea that “earlier is better” for reading instruction is simply not supported by research evidence. Children’s long-term achievement and self-identities as readers and students can be damaged when they are introduced to reading and literacy too early. #childdevelopment #childdevelopmentspecialist #childtherapy #childtherapist #earlierisnotbetter #theartofmft http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jessica-smock/i-dont-want-my-son-to-read-in-kindergarten_b_11800816.html

Egocentric Did you know that toddlers are egocentric? Egocentric means you don’t understand or recognize that others have different thoughts and feelings. Toddlers think that everyone is seeing the world from their perspective. A great example would be how a toddler will bring something to show someone who is on the phone. We know the person can’t see it but the toddler thinks they can see it because the toddler can see it. Although this aspect of development is in some ways learned, because it does take social interaction to completely grasp, it is mostly just a part of the toddler brain that simply has not developed yet. Likely for good reason. Attachment is so crucial in the younger years that toddlers benefit from having a singular view of the world. Our relationships can become more complex as we begin to realize that others are thinking and feeling different things than we are. That complexity, whether by nature or nurture, is too much for a toddler to grasp, from a social, cognitive and emotional aspect. Common Questions about the Toddler Workshop 1. Is it at a certain time? No, you can watch the sessions anytime. 2. Can I access them offline? Yeah, they are MP4’s so you can download them to your device. 3. Is there a limit to how many times I can watch them? No 4. What is the format? They are animated power point presentations. Sessions 1-3 are not narrated and sessions 4-6 are narrated. 5. A workshop like this usually costs over 100$’s, why is yours so cheap? I just want it to be accessible. True, genuine praise can be connecting, uplifting and inspiring. It can give us feelings of validation and a sense of belonging. But praise that is used with the intention of reinforcing certain behaviours is actually manipulative and increases feelings of being loved conditionally, rather than unconditionally. Is the intention recognition or reinforcement? And if you find yourself saying “well it’s both.” Then it is reinforcement and we should try to minimize how often we use that strategy. The Toddler Workshop Series can teach you all about typical toddler development and give you lots of strategies for responding to all the challenges and changes of toddlerhood. Common Questions about the Toddler Workshop 1. Is it at a certain time? No, you can watch the sessions anytime. 2. Can I access them offline? Emotionally driven behaviour is not manipulative, it’s informative. Are you confused by your toddlers behaviour? Do you feel at a loss for how to respond? Do you find yourself reacting more than responding? If so, I highly recommend the Toddler Workshop Series (ages 18 months to 4 years old). It is jam packed with information about why toddlers are the way they are and how we can live our lives while still meeting their needs. Common Questions about the Toddler Workshop 1. Looking for a few tips on how to do this? Our toddler workshop is FILLED with examples of what to do and say in these moments. There is a link in my bio (Session 3 is on tantrums 🙌) ⁣ ⁣ A child-led approach is not a “whatever a child wants” approach. ⁣ It is more about meeting a child’s needs. Sometimes they need something, they do not want and those moments can be tricky. It is not uncommon to struggle with finding the balance between honouring your child’s autonomy and keeping them safe and healthy.” J. Milburn⁣ ⁣ Common Questions about the Toddler Workshop⁣ 1. “I’m pretty sure my 3 yo likes to be violent… what is up with that?” “Let me break this down…. A 3 yo may seem to enjoy being violent because it is one way they like to play. At 3 years old, they have a limited understanding of the thoughts and feelings of others. A lot of children respond with laughter when they hurt someone and the person reacts. This could be an anxious reaction, like “oh I anticipated this to be fun but they seem unhappy. I am confused so my body is laughing nervously trying to figure out the situation.” They may also laugh because they thought the reaction was funny.” J. Milburn Tips - Make sure you don’t send mixed messages to younger children by reacting in a silly or fun way to behaviours you don’t want to encourage. Example: baby hits Grandpa on the arm at the table, Grandpa makes a big silly reaction to make baby laugh, it’s hysterical for baby and everyone else so they hit Grandpa again and it continues. Two years later they hit Grandpa, hoping to bond and connect, laugh and play and they are met with disapproval… it’s confusing for young minds trying to understand others emotions while regulating their own, at the same time. - At the same time, don’t avoid rough housing, rather use rough-and-tumble play as a chance to learn about boundaries and safety. For more tips on how to respond to toddlers aggression get Session 4 of our Toddler Workshop Series, where we explain why children do this, why it’s hard for them to stop themselves, why it can be so emotionally triggering for parents and what to do about all of that. Myth Busted⁣ ⁣ Trying to build autonomy by giving your child freedom of choice does not create emotional insecurity.⁣ ⁣ What could possibly be happening? ⁣ ⁣ For an anxiously attached child, who has an insecure attachment quality, they may struggle with choices. The parent has likely modelled indecisiveness, since that can be a major component of this type of attachment quality. In this case, the parent needs to build their own confidence in making choices while also demonstrating this for their child. Offering less options and smaller choices at first, can help build the child’s confidence around making choices. It can also build the parents confidence. ⁣ ⁣ Neurodiversity can also change how children respond to choices. However, ND people still do much better when they do get to make their own choices and feel a sense of autonomy. This is not exclusive to the NT world.⁣ ⁣ This starts in Toddlerhood. Find out more about Toddler Development with the Toddler Workshop Series.⁣ ⁣ Common Questions about the Toddler Workshop⁣ 1. Is it at a certain time? No, you can watch the sessions anytime.⁣ 2. Why don’t toddlers listen when we tell them not to do things? Toddlers are built this way so that they learn all the things they need to learn as a toddler. “How to behave” is actually subjective and not a skill a toddler needs to progress to the next stage of development. Impulse control, self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy and reasoning will all increase as they age. The learning of these skills can be impacted by personality and environment, yet they are often over-estimated by adults. Just because your toddler has done something once or twice, with guidance or even spontaneously, does not mean they have mastered that skill and can be depended on to employ it, without prompting, whenever needed. What is influencing your choice to toilet train? Age? School requirement/request? Convenient time? Tired of buying diapers? Inconvenience of diapers when out in public? All really valid ADULT reasons for wanting to toilet train. Unfortunately, none of these reasons actually make your child physically, emotionally and mentally ready to use the toilet independently. What can happen when we base our choice on the reasons above is it makes the whole process much more difficult and challenging, increasing resistance and possibly causing bowel and urinary tract issues that can last far into their teens (Steve Hodges, Paediatric Urologist). It will also likely take longer and take you out of your “responsive parenting vibe” because you can’t toilet train a child within this parenting approach. So how do you know when they are ready? What do you do to support them? I cover all these questions in Session 5 of the Toddler Workshop Series on Responsive Toileting. Something I didn’t know as a new parent… Your child will likely not just progressively sleep longer stretches. Sleep needs change ALL THE TIME. Being adaptable and flexible is typically far more helpful than maintaining consistency. Lots of changes in toddlerhood too!
