my current interactions with media created with children in mind is limited to rewatches of shows i used to enjoy in my youth. you will not find me trying out shows released >2013 because they pique my interest. and i slightly judge people who do.
do whatever floats your boat or finds your lost remote, but know that, to moi, it is slightly off if you are enjoying and interacting with media created for people five, ten, twenty years your senior. why is that? is it because many of you lack the critical thinking skills needed to enjoy shows with non-explanatory writing?
don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a dig against animation. i believe animation is a wholly underrated art form that can tell stories in ways regular filmmaking cannot. but when you watch shows that air on nickelodeon or disney channel or whatever channel is offered in your neck of the woods, i can’t help but wonder what is so enthralling about it.
is it because it’s easier to digest due to the limited palette of ingredients available? does the editing style fire up the locus of childhood enjoyment that allows you to consume it without devolving into televis-ennui? is it because you want the plots, morality, characters, or whatever component of episodic storytelling to be displayed on a dinner plate for you?
i get the appeal of slice-of-life, plot-lite, and easygoing shows, but what about the kid-centric shows/films does it for you? i’m genuinely curious.
