Eileen Gray the ‘Dragons’ armchair, circa 1917-19,
"In the form of unfurling petals, upholstered in brown leather, the frame in sculpted wood, lacquered brownish orange and silver and modeled as the serpentine, intertwined bodies of two dragons, their eyes in black lacquer on a white ground, their bodies decorated in low relief with stylized clouds."
Dragons is a summation of many of Gray's earliest inspirations. By the time she started working on the chair in 1917, she had been exposed to and working with lacquer for over 15 years.
For this piece, she lacquered it by hand and later spent days polishing the piece.
The dragon in Chinese culture is the highest-ranking creature, and is associated with the emperor and therefore, power and good fortune.
The two arms of the chair are made of stylized dragons in wood lacquer, combining ancient Chinese principles with a modern vision.
It measures 61 by 91 cm.
Pictured in Yves Saint Laurent’s apartment on the rue de Babylone in Paris, it sold for €21,905,000 on 25 February 2009 at Christie’s in Paris.

do you talk about types of furniture and interiors of an ancient china's house?
Hi, thanks for the question, and sorry for taking ages to reply!
I don’t really talk about the types of furniture and interiors of traditional Chinese houses (I don’t know enough to talk about them tbh). However, I have shared a few related posts from other blogs. You can find them in my furniture, interior, decor, and architecture tags.
Each of rectangular box construction, with doors set with brass lockplate with pin and rectangular pull handles, supported on four horseshoe feet, opening to a shelved interior with two drawers
One day I'm going to settle down, I'm going to put down roots and watch them grow. I'm going to be able to make choices that last, that I might keep all my life. I might change my mind on some of them, and that's okay too, because I will have the time for both.
I love my life and the ever changing nature of it but I'm excited to build something that lasts one day. I'm excited to rest.
