The Middle Kingdom under the Big Sky: A History of the Chinese Experience in Montana

When thinking about early Chinese American history, people often point to the Transcontinental Railroad and California's Gold Rush. However, Chinese residents also built their communities in the American Midwest. Mark T. Johnson's research highlights the Chinese community in Montana between the mid-19th and early-20th centuries. By spending significant time reconstructing the details of a Chinese community, this book resists and revises the outdated and stereotypical views of early Chinese immigrants that denied individuality and identity.

Got back from work went to the Cardiologist & currently have to wear a Cardiac Monitor for a week-30 days. Been having tachycardia & chest pain & constant dizziness again. But at least I can still drive & still be extra cautious.Also, 1 of my cousin's is a cardiologist in town-Dr.Thomas Truong. 🩵Proud nurse, coach. Born & raised in Nevada. Family living in Nevada for 44 (forty-four) years. 18 years as an elite long distance runner.

Home movie provides a link to the Chinese community in Augusta, Georgia

We shared with you last week the #UGA News press release about our preservation of Nelle and Walter Golosky’s #homemovie from April 1939 depicting the #IBPOEW Black Elks convention parade in Augusta, Georgia. The footage includes wonderful images of the people of the Laney Walker district on a busy afternoon. Watch the film here: https://bmac.libs.uga.edu/pawtucket2/index.php/Detail/objects/404382 . It was donated to us by Samuel Wilson, a UGA alumnus.

And at the very beginning of the film reel, there are 2-1/2 seconds showing a Chinese-American man and two young girls standing in front of a shop on 9th Street, across the street from where most of the action occurs, the sidewalk in front of Breault C. Pendleton’s Hollywood Studio Photography shop at 1136 9th.

I knew that the Digital Library of Georgia (@DigLibGA) had partnered with the Augusta-Richmond County Public Library to disseminate the oral histories of Augusta’s Chinese Americans made by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. You can listen to those oral histories here:  https://dlg.usg.edu/collection/gaec_caoh.  Knowing that there is documentation of the Chinese Augustan community, I wanted to check with my colleague, Tina Monaco, the genealogy and local history librarian at the ARCPL, for a connection to the CCBA; perhaps CCBA could identify this man and young girls.

Tina referred me to Travis Tom, who, like our donor Samuel, is UGA alumnus. He is a graphic designer/illustrator with his own business in Augusta,  http://www.tntomdesign.com/.  He replied to me right away that the man is Henry Jue and the girls are his daughters Harriet and Dorothy. Henry Jue is Travis’s great-grand-uncle so the girls are his first cousins twice removed.

The Jue family is listed in the 1940 Federal Census as living at 1149 9th Street and running a grocery store. That puts the store on the street in the footage, across from the shops just up from the Lenox Theater.

We’re pleased to have these connections with people across the state of Georgia who are able to share their knowledge with us. We see so many images among our films, some of which stand out and some of which are more subtle, but all of them document aspects of Georgians’ lives and cultures. We invite you to explore our holdings further. Perhaps you will find someone you know among our films.
