Listed: Blue Ocean

Bay Area three-piece Blue Ocean plays exuberantly discordant yet surprisingly mild-mannered noise pop, not unlike what a TV Personalities record might sound like if it were playing through a box fan that’s tumbling down the stairs. In his review of last year’s self-titled LP, Chris Liberato noted how suddenly the dynamics at play in the band’s songs can change, writing of “Human Now”: “You won’t be able to help but smile when a big bombastic synth chord comes lumbering across the song, from out of nowhere, with the enthusiasm of a sedated puppy — and then decides to stick around for a couple of encores.” Hot off the announcement of their Slumberland debut, Fertile State (out in October), band members Rick Altieri, David Stringi and Neal Donovan pop by to share a few words about some of the records they love.

Snapper — S/T

Found years ago, during a visit to Brooklyn, NY. I instantly gravitated to the vibrant and colorful slashes of paint, which abstractly splayed themselves across the front cover. The songs are very colorful as well, painted with electrifying rhythms and arpeggiating synth leads. “This would make a great gift for a couple of friends of mine.” Maybe someday Flying Nun will re-release it.

Dummy — EP2

I find myself listening again and again to this second installment from Dummy, sonic enthusiasts based on the West Coast. The opening track “Thursday Morning” introduces itself quite charmingly with its creative and concentrated vocal melodies. Followed blissfully by deep layers of noise and feedback within a clever collage process.

Rick’s Picks:

M. Sage — Paradise Crick

This album was a surprise find in the first half of 2023 for me, I was actually listening to the single “Crick Dynamo” before the album was released and remember my ears really perked up. I know M. Sage himself just did a Listed recently, what a lovely surprise — huge new fan of his work. I love the line walked between sonic lab experimentations and organic leafy strollings by a river; right up my alley.

Bill Evans — Coffee and Cigarettes

I always come back to Bill Evans when I’m in the mood for calming jazz that still demands your attention and challenges you in many ways. His playing on this record reminds me a lot of Debussy, another go-to when trying to unwind. Evans is one of my all-time favorite piano players.

Lifetones — For A Reason

Charles Bullen of This Heat went on to make this post-punk/dub hybrid classic with Julius Cornelius Samuel in 1983 — This Heat had just broken up the year before. The rhythmic syncopations and droning cyclical vocal delivery make every song on this record a mesmerizing journey. The lyrics are profound in their simplicity, dealing with human interaction and nature.

Neptune — Gong Lake

This record will always be special to me. Neptune was one of the first bands I remember seeing with Dave when I moved to Boston in 2008. They were playing in the basement of Gay Gardens, an old DIY spot in Allston. I was instantly blown away by the barrage of rhythmic noise and impressed by the homemade guitars and effects they had fabricated. They’ve been a huge influence on Dave and I for years now.

Emeralds — Does It Look Like I’m Here?

A Midwest synth classic. When I listened to the song “Candy Shoppe” again recently I was even more moved than ever before, a good sign that this 13-year-old album stands the test of time. This album fluctuates between gritty acidic synth-scapes and ambient movements in the vein of early Eno. I love Imaginary Softwoods too, John Elliot’s solo project post-Emeralds.

Ananda Kumar — Mangala Vadhyam Vol. 3

A friend with roots in Tamil Nadu told me about the nadaswaram, a double-reed instrument played at weddings and religious festivals in Southern India. I love how intense and cutting the sound is. This recording features two nadaswarams in semi-improvised conversation with each other. I'm reminded a bit of the groove and excitement of traditional New Orleans jazz. Also, the thavil drumming is insane, reminiscent of Aphex Twin breakbeats.

Jed Wentz — Telemann: 12 Fantasias for Flute

Telemann's fantasias for solo flute are so cool. Although they were published in the 1730s, there's something that feels very modern about having just the flute to focus on. The player is asked to jump around throughout the range of the instrument, sometimes outlining melodies and basslines simultaneously. It's all the more impressive on the keyless, wooden, baroque flute which has a mellower sound than modern metal ones. I imagine it as portable music that someone could play anywhere.

Sheer Mag — Compilation

My partner threw this on when we were cleaning out our last apartment. I'm not usually a big fan of riff-driven guitar rock, but this album just got me. The licks are smokin’, the guitar tones are perfection, and I love the mix— just gritty enough.

“Hey, Dave is it okay if my cousin comes over? He’s in town for a few days.” You call out from the sofa as David stands in the kitchen grabbing a snack as he stares at his phone.

As he walks back over, he lifts his head up to see you looking at him. “Sorry, I zoned out.” He chuckles, watching you roll your eyes as he sits down beside you. “What was the question?” 

“My cousin is in town for work, is it alright if he comes over for a bit?” You question and David leans back, surprised by your question. “It’s okay if not, I’ll go meet him for coffee when he has a chance.” You quickly add, trying to hide your nerves. 

“No no, of course!” He rambles, catching your eyes and seeing the smile he loves return across your lips. “I’m just surprised, you don’t talk about your family much.” He comments and you look across to Natalie whose eyes widen. “Not that it’s a bad thing, I just,” 

“David, stop there before you dig a hole any deeper.” Natalie warns him and he obliges. 

“Sorry,” He mutters to you, burying his head into the crook of your neck as you chuckle at his scruff along your skin. 

Lifting your hand up, you bury it into his hair, hearing him groan at the comfort of it. “You don’t have to be sorry, my family are pretty private.” You explain as he leans back, focusing on you. “They just don’t really do social media and with my job, they prefer to keep away from it all.” You shrug your shoulders. 

“I get that.” He nods along. “But yeah, I’d love to meet him, what’s his name? Just so I don’t call him dude the entire time.” He jokes and you smile.

“His name is Chris.” You tell him as you glance over at Natalie who tries to stop her smile from getting any wider. “And I think you’ll get on really well.” 

David smiles proudly at the comment and sits upright. “I’m sure we will, baby.” He kisses your cheek before grabbing his laptop and resumes editing. “Is he coming today or tomorrow, as I know some of the guys are coming over to hang out later.” 

Looking down at your phone, you see a new message from Chris. “He’s free this afternoon. Could meet a few of my friends he hears so much about.” You tell him, seeing him nod as you text him back.

“Y/n’s cousin, Chris, eh?” Corinna speaks up as she collapses down on the sofa, Carly and Erin following in with Starbucks for Jason. “Is he cute?” She asks you, smirking as she raises an eyebrow.

“Ew, you can’t ask her that, he’s her cousin.” Erin says as Carly films. “Besides, didn’t you say he’s like forty?” 

You nod in response. “He’s in his late thirties but acts like he’s in his twenties. Probably to do with his job.” 

“What does he do?” Jason questions as he sips his coffee, sitting on the edge of the sofa as David walks in and everyone turns to look at him. “Hold that question, Y/n. Dave, what’re you wearing?” 

David looks down at his checked trousers. “What, they’re comfy.” He states. 

“Not those,” Jason sighs. “the top.” 

“Oh, this,” He chuckles. “it’s comfy too.” 

You bury your face in your hands, realising this isn’t only going to be entertaining but also embarrassing for the both of you. “Why do you have a photo of us printed across an entire shirt, babe?” You ask him.

“It’s my favourite photo of us.” He proudly admits, smiling to you as a series of ‘aws’ sound throughout the room. “And I want your cousin to know I care about you a lot, by wearing your face.” 

“Well, it’s your funeral.” You mutter as Natalie looks over and takes out David’s camera, waiting for the moment to arrive. 

“Anyway, back to you Y/n, what does he do?” Jason repeats his question, turning his focus back onto you. 

Shuffling in your seat, you check your phone to see he’s about ten minutes away. “Well, he’s trying to make it as an actor currently.” 

Jason nods along. “Oh acting, huh? Brave choice. Not the easiest to make it into.” 

“Yeah, I know. He’s landed a few small roles in recently, so he’s doing alright.” You comment, knowing Natalie is trying to hide her laugh and pride for you. “Oh shit,” You look down to see he’s texted again. “he’s here.” 

Corinna shuffles and pulls down her top slightly and flips her hair back whilst everyone vlogging prepares themselves. David rushes over, wiping his hands repeatedly over his trousers. 

“Oh and one more thing, no comments about our sex life. That I don’t want my cousin leaving with graphic details of.” You point to everyone who nods in response. 

“Do I look okay?” David asks you quietly as you start to walk toward the front door. “I really want him to approve of me, like I know he’s your cousin but he’s still family.” He rambles. 

You try not to squeal at how adorable he sounds and instead you walk over and kiss him softly. “He’ll love you, trust me. All you have to do is be yourself and you’ll get along just fine.” You reassure him. 

David exhales deeply before walking over and sitting down beside Jason. “He’s just a guy, Dave.” Jason pats his back as David shakes his hands, hearing you opening the front door.

“Hey, I’m so glad you could make it!” You happily greet Chris, bringing him into a hug.

“Since when did you get so tall?” He jokes with you as you roll your eyes. “I’m glad we could hang out, it’s been too long.” 

Inside of the living room, David tenses as he shoots Natalie a look as she holds the camera. “Why does he sound familiar?” David asks Jason who simply shrugs his shoulders. 

“Come on in, David is excited to meet you.” You nudge Chris who follows in slowly. “Okay, so this is my cousin, Chris.” You keep your eyes on everyone as Chris walks in, fully in show as he waves. 

“Hey guys,” He speaks up with a smile and you try to hold back your laugh as you watch jaws drop. 

“Y/n,” Jason is the first to speak up as everyone else remains too stunned to talk. “your cousin Chris is, THE Chris Evans?” He questions.

You look up at Chris and then back to Jason. “Erm, yeah, I guess he is.” You say with a laugh. “Didn’t I mention that?” 

“No, Y/n. We would’ve fuckin’ remembered if you did.” Erin rambles, trying to maintain her composure and remember the fact she is engaged. 

“So, which one is David?” Chris asks, looking down to you. 

A small smile forms on your lips as you roll on your heels. “Why don’t you take a guess?” 

David can feel the heat rising to his cheeks as he remains in complete shock. He can barely progress the fact that you’re related to Captain America, let alone that he is stood in his living room and wants to meet him. 

Chris follows the faces across the room until he lands on David. “I’m guessing he’s the guy wearing a picture of you both on his top?” Chris chuckles and David lifts his head up, looking as nervous as ever. “What’s up, dude?” 

Still stunned, Jason nudges David to force a response out of him. “Hi Cap, I mean, Chris.” David stumbles over his words which you can’t help but smile at. In the last few years, you’ve watched your cousin grow as an actor and his fan base rise, David being one of them. 

Walking over toward David, you rest your hand in his. “Hey, it’s okay. He’s a normal guy, really.” You quietly comfort him as his eyes widen.

“Babe, I don’t think you get it. He’s Captain America.” He whisper yells as Chris walks over. 

“It’s true, Y/n. I am.” Chris adds and you roll your eyes, hearing David giggle excitedly.

Eventually, everyone settled down as Chris drank coffee and chatted about memories growing up. There was the occasional question about his acting roles, and the people he’s worked with, but mostly he just asked about everyone else. 

You sat alongside David, holding his hand the entire time. He kept asking you to pinch him, just to make sure he wasn’t dreaming which you did repeatedly. 

“You know, this makes sense now.” Carly blurts out and Chris raises an eyebrow.

“Oh yeah, how so?” He responds, leaning back as your eyes widen, wondering what she’s about to say.

“Well when we saw one of the Avengers movies, I think Corinna said if she met you the things she’d wanna do to you and-”

“Yeah let's not mention all those now, Carly.” Corinna cuts Carly off, flashing a smile to Chris. 

“But Y/n just stayed quiet, like I thought she just preferred like the pink panther or something but no, you’re related.” She says proudly and Chris opens his mouth to correct her, but you subtly shake your head to him. 

All of the cameras have now been put away as Chris gets ready to leave. “Seriously come by anytime, Chris.” Jason comments and everyone nods in agreement, making you smile proudly as you and David see him to his car. 

“Well thanks, guys, it was great meeting you all.” He says happily. “And I’ll check out your videos once Y/n sends me the links.” 

“Oh my god, Chris Evans is going to see our vlogs.” Erin quickly mutters to Carly in realisation. 

Walking out from the house, you stand beside David as Chris sighs. “I’m glad I stopped by, kid. It’s good to see you doing so well out here.” Chris tells you and you can feel your heartwarming at his comment. “I know how rough it was initially for you. 

“Yeah, it wasn’t easy. But I made some great friends who helped out a lot.” You glance over to David who can’t wipe his smile off his face. 

“Well, you treat her well, David.” Chris steps forward, bringing David into a hug and David’s eyes widen as you take a quick photo. “Let me know when you’re back home for dinner sometime and bring David too.” Chris says as he hugs you tightly before walking back toward his car. “See you guys soon!” 

“Bye Chris!” You wave to him, seeing David almost frozen on the spot. “Dave, you in there, baby?” You shake him lightly, watching as he turns to face you. 

“Did I just dream that whole thing?” He asks once more and you chuckle, pinching his cheek. “Ow.” He mutters, rubbing his cheek. “So I really just met Chris Evans?” 

“Yeah,” You tell him. “just you wait ‘til you watch the footage back, and realise what you wore.” You joke as you walk back inside as David swears under his breath.

Harry wasn’t looking at you, he was bouncing his knee up and down. There was a knock on his door and he stood up quickly.

"Must be the pizza."

You nodded and watched him go. When Harry opened the door he saw the pizza guy but also saw Derek knocking on your door. He finished paying the delivery guy and watched him for a bit. He had a "to go" bag around his wrist.

"Mate?"

"Oh um Harry? Right?"

"Yeah?"

"Y/n isn’t answering I guess maybe she fell asleep or something. She forgot her leftovers in my car."

"And you had to bring them tonight?" Harry looked at him confused.

"I don’t see a problem with that, do you?" he stepped closer to Harry.

"Mate, look. I'll take the leftovers and give them to her in the morning." he says as he shakes his head.

"I know you have a thing for he-"

"Derek?" you questioned as you appeared in the doorframe.

"Y/n? What the hell are you doing here? Why didn’t you answer your phone?"

"Hey, is that a way to talk to a lady?” Harry stepped in front of you.

"Harry," you moved him out of your way a little, "I can defend myself thank you."

"Y/n I told you, I told you he had feelings for you."

Harry looked between you two. You guys had talked about him on your date. Fucking ace. He could barely hide his smile.

"Derek, I can be wherever I want to be. We aren't boyfriend or girlfriend. Remember that. I didn’t answer my phone because I left it at my place."

"Shit, you have a thing for him too huh? Don’t invite me up so you could hang out with this, this nothing."

"Derek shut up, that is my best friend you are talking about. Forget tonight even happened because now you’ve really lost any chance with me. Just go." you left and walked back into Harry's apartment.

With a grin, Harry did a little tsk tsk and closed his door behind him. He set the pizza on the coffee table and went to his bathroom. He looked himself in the mirror and had the biggest smile. You just told Derek off, you defended him. He did a happy dance and then walked out looking much more cool. Except, you were gone. His shoulders slumped and he decided to give you your space rather than run after you. You laid on your bed, desperately trying to clear your head. You didn't want to think about Derek or Harry. You wanted to run away from both of them. Derek had apologized but you just left him on read. You didn't care. You texted your nursing manager and asked if you could do some over time tomorrow. They're frequently short so she said yes and you went to sleep since you had to be up early.

That morning you went to work and actually felt super excited. You hadn't seen your kids in like 3 days. You were off for 4 but you needed today. As you got report from your work buddy Chris. He was the typical dad that gave all the great dad jokes. He made the kids laugh and feel better. You had one patient you definitely favored. It wasn't supposed to happen, but you couldn’t help it. Her name was Malika and she was four years old. She had been in the hospital for about a year now.

"Good morning beautiful" you said as you walked into her room.

"Nurse y/n! I missed you." she said as she got up on her knees to give you a hug. You hugged her and kissed her head. Yes, you were very attached to her. Her parents loved you too. You were each other's favorites.

"I missed you! I'm sorry I was gone. But I came in today."

"I'm excited for today. Do you have a lot of patients?"

"Just you and lil David down the hall."

"David had a rough night. I saw doctors go in and out a lot."

"Yeah, he did.." You hated what these kids had to go through. Malika was only four years old but could tell you everything that was "wrong" with her.

"Well, Dr. Stevens said my body is ready to go outside."

"Hmm, did she?"

"Mhm, last night"

"Where do you wanna go? Playground? Or the jungle room?"

"Jungle room is just a bunch of plants, I wanna go on the playground."

You laughed at her answer and said okay. You changed all her dressings and brushed her little bit of hair. It made her feel more girly. Your morning went by fast and you got your sandwiches for you and Malika. You wheeled her out of her room and grabbed a sweater before leaving her room. You settled on the playground and moved her to a bench. You know how much she hated her wheelchair. She ate her sandwich and you had to remind her to slow down. Her stomach was very sensitive with all of the chemo treatments.

"y/n?"

"Yes?"

"Do you have a prince?"

"No, I don’t have a prince." you wanted to tell her prince's weren't real but you couldn't do that to her.

"Are you sure? I have one"

You tried not to laugh but asked, "Oh really? Who?"

"Dr. Evans"

"Oh yeah, he's a good looking prince." you said as you walked her over to the swing. You lifted her up and tied her in and swung her lightly. You had to face her front to see if her body showed any signs of sickness.

"You know who's a good looking prince?"

"Who?"

"That guy" she pointed towards someone behind you.

"Malika don’t point its rude," you put her hand down gently. You turned around and saw Harry with his hands in his pockets. You took a deep breath and turned back to Malika.

"Hey, I think its time we go up. You need to take your medicine and rest a bit. Today was big day, going outside."

"Okay" she said with a pout.

You helped her off the swing and back into her wheel chair. You mouthed to Harry, "I'll be back". He nodded and sat on the bench. You walked and wheeled Malika into the elevator. You jumped a little when she spoke up.

"You knew him, didn’t you?"

"I did."

She turned around slightly, "Prince?"

"I don't know," you shrugged, "he's my Kristoff right now."

"Kristoff and Anna end up together."

"I know," you wink at her and wheel her out.

You get her settled back in her room and tuck her in. Going outside always exhausted her body. Especially if there was a lot of sun. You put on Frozen 2 because she claimed that now you made her want to watch it. You dimmed the lights and walked out. You checked on Dave and the NA in his room said nothing new so you let her know you were going on your lunch break. You took the elevator down and took deep breaths. You tried to run away from Harry but he ran after you anyway. Pretty much prince material. You saw him sitting on the bench before you walked out the door. He was wearing sweatpants and a workout shirt. His hair was pushed up in a little pony. You walked out and slowly walked towards him before settling down beside him.

"Har, what are you doing here?" you played with your fingers in your lap.

"You left last night."

"I had to work"

"No you didn’t, you sent me your schedule. Did you forget?"

Fuck.

"I'm doing overtime, they needed more people today" Not a total lie.

"We never got to finish our conversation"

You were as close to Aaron as Dave was. Maybe even closer. No, that’s not possible. But you were still close to him. You knew about his divorce. You and Dave confronted him when you both realized that Haley hadn’t called all day. Or even the day before. Or the entirety of the case for that matter. That’s when you both knew something was up.

The confrontation was dismissed by the tall man, of course. Saying it was nothing to worry about and that everything was fine. It really wasn’t. When you heard his low voice try to sweep the matter under the rug, you and David shared a knowing glance. While you went to go soothe out your skirt and sit down, he went behind Aaron’s desk and got the Scotch and three glasses. You grabbed them from his hand and started to pour.

You and David like to think of yourselves as therapists, to a certain extent of course. So while you were pouring, you could see the troubled man run a hand down his face and lean back in his seat with a deep sigh. ‘A true sign of trouble,’ you thought.

You knew this man, and his tells for that matter, like the back your hand. Every slight eyebrow raise, or the way he clears his throat, everything. Including all the tells he just gave. The hand, him laying back, and most importantly, the sigh.

For him that meant, ‘It’s far too complicated,’ so at first you avoided the subject. In the midst of the deafening silence, David started talking about some story about one of his ex-wives.

He had said something funny but you couldn’t pull your eyes away from the man behind the desk. Your eyes looked him up and down. Starting from his black hair to his hazel eyes. Then they led to his smile with dimples. You thought he was an attractive man. Honestly, who wouldn’t. But he’s your best friend and not to mention just got a divorce.

When you came out of your trance, you realized that Aaron glass was empty. You stood up from the leather seat and began pouring him another. God knows he needs it. You couldn’t help but feel his eyes on you. When you looked down at him, you saw his mask coming down, exposing all the sorrow. His eyes darted between your face and you refilling his glass.

It was a small gesture, but he still appreciated it. That’s just who he was. No matter how small or seemingly insignificant it was, he’d still remember it. After you got done pouring the alcohol, you sat down as he gave you a slight nod.

As soon as it disappeared, the silence was back. You and David were both looking between your glasses and at Aaron. You were silently hoping he’d talk soon but knew that most likely wouldn’t happen.

Disbelief stuck you and you heard him clear his throat and take a deep breath in. Was he really going to tell you what happened? No, that’s not like him. But this seemed to be bothering him a lot.

“Haley and I aren’t doing so well..,” the man sitting across from you spoke. That explains everything but that doesn’t feel like the whole truth. You had a gut feeling it was more than that. 

The three of you sat in a deafening silence for a while. Everyone could feel the tension and could hear a pin drop. The oldest of the group began talking and telling stories of his marriages and even some early BSU stories. 

The time ticked by and it was getting late. After about four stories from David, you all decided to call it a night. 

You watched the two men share a meaningful hug. They’ve been through a lot together. It made you just a little happy knowing they have each other. Rossi then made his way over to you afterward, giving you a father-like hug. The smell of the expensive cologne lingered even after he began to walk away across the room.

While the Italian man walked out the office door, you stayed behind to help clean up the glasses and the Whiskey. There was a silence between you and the unit chief. It wasn’t necessarily awkward, just a silence. The sound of Aaron starting up again of filling out reports filled your ears. ‘Such a workaholic,’ you thought to yourself with a small smile. 

“Hotch, why don’t you go home to Jack? I’m sure he’s staying up waiting on you.” You spoke quietly, hoping you didn’t overstep a line. You didn’t want to sound like you were trying to be his mother. 

When there was no response, your body tensed. ‘There’s the line,’ you thought to yourself, mentally beating yourself up. You didn’t look up, scared for the look in Aaron’s eyes. You sighed as you finished wiping the glasses and the drink. 

Standing up, you looked over to him. He was still doing paperwork, of course. 

“Well, goodnight then. I’m gonna head home.” You tried your best to break the silence but to no avail. He didn’t respond, much less look at you. It was obvious you had upset him. 

In the process of making your way out of his office and to your desk, you felt eyes staring at you. You turned around to be met with him standing next to his desk with his head hanging low. 

“(Y/N), we got divorced. It’s over. I came home to an empty house after a case. No Haley, no Jack, nothing. They just left.” His voice tapered at the end of the sentence. You looked up into his mesmerizing hazel eyes filled with water. 

The sight broke your heart. He has been acting different but you would’ve never guessed this. They were highschool sweethearts, how could hey have gotten a divorce? The thought baffled you but that’t not important.

You slowly walked over to him, trying to be as quiet as possible. You slowly and lovingly put your hand on his arm. He looked up, pain in every inch of his eyes. The orbs are beginning to look red and puffy.

His eyes looked around the room and up to the ceiling hoping to stop the stream of tears threatening to spill. After he temporarily blinked them away, he looked to your (y/e/c) eyes. 

“I’m not okay..” His voice cracked at the words. Admitting it makes it real and that probably scared him. You didn’t respond with any words. Instead, you put your arms on his shoulders and pulled him into a hug. It was odd, you two never hugged but this felt like the right time. 

You could feel his tense muscles under his shirt slowly easing off. He needed this. You knew he. He probably knew it too, he just didn’t want to admit it. You slowly pulled away, searching his face for any tell of regret. You didn’t see any, just sadness behind his eyes.

“I’ve noticed, Aaron. Not being okay is okay. It’s not against the law or anything. You don’t have to try and hide your feelings. That’s a normal way to feel after something like that happens. Everything is gonna be okay. Trust me, okay?” Your meaningful words were quiet seeing as you were scared to say the wrong thing. 

When he nodded his head, you gave a slight smile and pulled him into another hug. This one lasted longer with both of you having a tighter grip on the other. This was much more heartfelt, the hesitation from a few moments before melting away. 

You felt closer to him. Yes, you two were already close but never this close. You might just have to fight Mr. David Rossi for the position of “Aaron Hotchner’s best friend.”

D23 EXPO DAY 2 - WALT DISNEY STUDIOS

On the second day of Disney’s D23 Expo this year, Disney hosted a huge panel on all the upcoming movies the company has planned. Here’s everything you need to know from the Walt Disney Studios panel.

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

A new poster for Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker was released at D23! It shows Rey and Kylo fighting against a backdrop of PALPATINE! (⚠️ He was confirmed to be in the movie when the first trailer was released months ago, I know some of you consider it a spoiler, I would too, but it seems like Disney will feature him heavily in the marketing so there’s no escape from it really).

Disney unveiled the first look at Emma Stone in CRUELLA!🐶 Disney’s Cruella ia A live action movie surrounding the iconic villain from 101 Dalmatians, Cruella De Vil, focusing on Cruella’s origins, similar to Maleficent & it’ll have a pop punk vibe. The film also stars Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, and Joel Fry. Cruella currently has a release date on May 28, 2021.🖤

PIXAR’S SOUL

“Soul” is an upcoming Pixar animated film from Pete Docter (Monsters Inc, Up, Inside Out). The synopsis states: “Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you … you? [The film] takes you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life's most important questions.” The main character is a middle school band teacher who plays jazz on his off time, but unfortun lately life has derailed him from getting his big break and playing at a jazz club her dreams of getting into. He is the first black lead in a Pixar film. D23 attendees were shown footage. The voice cast includes Jaime Foxx, Daveed Diggs, Tina Fey, and Phylica Rashad. Soul is set to be released June 2020!

PIXAR’S ONWARD

A new poster & a still was just released for Disney•Pixar’s next movie an original story titled “Onward”! The film is set in a suburban fantasy world where humans do not exist, instead populated with elves, trolls, and sprites, where unicorns are as common as rodents, and the story follows two teenage elf brothers embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic in the world.

The voice cast includes Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer, & D23 attendees were shown an 8-minute clip. Tom Holland took the stage & told the audience “Listen, I know it’s been a crazy week but I want you to know from the bottom of my heart, I love you 3000”. I’m crying. We love you 3000, Tom. Onward arrives in theatres March 6, 2020!🦄

KIT HARINGTON & GEMMA CHAN JOIN MARVEL’S ETERNALS

The Eternals cast made an appearance at D23, with concept art of their costumes, and it was officially confirmed that Gemma Chan is joining the cast as Sersi and KIT HARINGTON is officially joining as BLACK KNIGHT / Dane Whitman🤩💫💫

The Eternals are an immortal alien race created by the Celestials who are sent to Earth to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants.✨

In the comics, Dane Whitman inherited a mystical sword that carried a family curse - he took the Black Knight name to help restore honor to their family legacy & was a long time member of the Avengers in the comics (very on brand for you Kit). Sersi is a member of the Eternals, & had a romantic relationship with Dane Whitman / Black Knight in the comics.🖤

The movie also stars Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff as the first deaf superhero in the MCU, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek,  and more.  I’m so happy Kit is in Eternals, reunited with his Stark brother :’)🐺 💫 Filming has already begun and it’s set to be released November 2020!

FROZEN 2❄️

We finally have some more details on FROZEN 2!❄️ At the panel at D23, it’s said that Frozen 2 centres on an important question - why does Elsa have powers? Additionally, the producers said that Frozen 1 and Frozen 2 come together to form one complete story. And Frozen 2 starts in the past” - confirming that they will be bringing back Anna and Elsa’s parents for ONE SCENE in the new movie. Two new additions to the voice cast are: Sterling K Brown who will voice a character called Lieutenant Mattias, and Evan Rachel Wood who will voice Elsa and Anna’s mother. The attendees at D23 got to see some footage & heard some of the music (& apparently it’s very catchy) Frozen 2 hits theatres this November!❄️

RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON🐉

Disney just announced an original new animated film in the works, Raya and the Last Dragon!🐉 The movie is described as a combination of classic Disney and kung-fu movies, but also Disney meets Game of Thrones. The film is set in a mysterious land called Kumandra, & the region is split into five sections, and Raya is a warrior on the search for the last dragon in the world.🐉 Here’s the concept art & logo - Cassie Steele is voicing Raya and Awkwafina will voice the last dragon. The movie is set to be released Thanksgiving 2020!

Here are the final bits of news from yesterday’s Walt Disney Studios panel at D23!

BLACK PANTHER 2🐾 No official title yet but the release date is set for May 6, 2022, with Ryan Coogler set to return as writer & director.

BLACK WIDOW🕸D23 attendees were shown a teaser trailer for BLACK WIDOW twice so far during D23. A 4-second clip leaked but Disney is taking it down. We also know Black Widow takes place following the events of Captain America: Civil War, as she finds herself on her own & forced to deal with “some of the red in her ledger”. It stars David Harbour stars as Red Guardian (a Russian super-soldier), Florence Pugh plays Yelena (a sister-figure to Natasha), and Rachel Weisz plays a Red Room spy. The movie is currently filming & is scheduled to be released May 2020!

JUNGLE CRUISE🍃D23 attendees were shown footage/a trailer for Jungle Cruise, an upcoming Disney live action film based on the popular Disney Parks attraction of the same name. There are apparently lots of references to the ride that it’s based on. The film is set during the early 20th century, where a riverboat captain named Frank takes a scientist and her brother on a mission into a jungle to find the Tree of Life which is believed to possess healing powers. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall, Paul Giamatti, Edgar Ramirez, and Jesse Plemons. Jungle Cruise is set to hit theaters July 2020.

MULAN⚔️The live action adaptation of Mulan was discussed at the panel today, showing attendees clips that include the matchmaking scene & the recruitment of the Emperor’s army. Apparently lots of the animated film’s shots are recreated and the film feels like a Chinese epic. It only has instrumental music from the animated film, and Mushu and Li Shang will not be in it. Mulan is set to hit cinemas March 27, 2020.🏮

Key players: Dak Prescott (QB, injured), Andy Dalton (backup QB, injured), No one of note (third-string QB), Amari Cooper (WR), CeeDee Lamb (WR), Ezekiel Elliott (RB), Leighton Vander Esch (LB), Greg Zuerlein (K), I could probably name more if I tried hard enough. Coach: Mike McCarthy. GM: Jerry Jones. Owner: Also Jerry Jones. Notes: Every year they have good players and lose anyway. Paid their running back instead of their quarterback. Also, now they have no healthy quarterback.

Washington [used to have a racist name]. Key players: Dwayne Haskins (benched QB), Alex Smith (QB... whose leg does not work), Kyle Allen (QB), Terry McLaurin (WR), Chase Young (DE), Montez Sweat (DE). Coach: Ron Rivera. Owner: Dan Snyder, who is the worst human being in the NFL, and that is saying a lot. Notes: No one cares about the football, Dan Snyder should be in jail. Also, Ron Rivera has cancer and Alex Smith’s leg injury almost killed him, so those guys deserve better.

NFC North:

Detroit Lions. Key Players: Matthew Stafford (QB), um, I should remember some more. Jeff Okudah (CB). Coach: Matt Patricia. Notes: Stafford deserves better. Patricia keeps signing ex-Patriots players, and it doesn’t work, presumably because the good ones are current-Patriots-players.

Minnesota Vikings. Key players: Kirk Cousins (QB), Adam Thielen (WR), Justin Jefferson (WR), Dalvin Cook (RB), many good defensive players whose names I don’t know. Coach: Mike Zimmer. Notes: Historically a good defense and just missing a competent QB. Paid a lot for an average QB; defense sucks now for some reason. Also, runs a lot.

Chicago Bears. Key Players: Mitchell Trubisky (QB), Nick Foles (QB), Allen Robinson (WR), Khalil Mack (DE). Coach: Matt Nagy. Notes: Has been wasting great defensive performances with poor to average quarterback play since World War II.

Green Bay Packers. Key Players: Aaron Rodgers (QB), Davante Adams (WR), Allan Lazard (WR), Aaron Jones (RB), Jamaal Williams (RB), Robert Tonyan (TE), David Bakhtiari (T), Za’Darius Smith (DE), Preston Smith (DE). Winning big but the analytics say they’re getting a bit lucky lately.

Atlanta Falcons. Key players: Matt Ryan (QB), Julio Jones (WR), I forgot the new WR’s name but he looks legit, Todd Gurley (RB). Coach that was recently fired: Dan Quinn. Notes: Have become known for inexplicably blowing enormous leads late in games. It’s quite funny, at this point.

New Orleans Saints. Key players: Drew Brees (QB), Michael Thomas (WR), Alvin Kamara (RB), Taysom Hill (listed as backup QB but just kinda does weird shit on offense), Jameis Winston (backup QB), Cam Jordan (DE), I should remember the cornerback’s name. Coach: Sean Payton. Notes: Known for having tons of talent every year, salary cap be damned, and then losing in heartbreaking fashion in the playoffs. Brees is getting old.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Key players: Tom Brady (QB), Mike Evans (WR), Chris Godwin (WR), this one WR who can go eat shit, Rob Gronkowski (TE), Antoine Winfield Jr (S), Vita Vea (DI). Coach: Bruce Arians. Notes: Signed Tom Brady. It’s working pretty well. Defense is top-tier. The most balanced team.

Some Thoughts on “Hadestown” and the Tony Awards

I do not claim to be an oracle of who will win the Tonys but here are my ideas, culled from a lot of time spent online reading hot takes and the smaller theater award winners, discussions with my two biggest theater friends who I have been discussing theater with for over 12 years, and also brief chatting with an acquittance who is Tony-nominated adjacent (one day, she will have her own instead of just getting mentioned in speeches!).

Here are what I think the odds are of "Hadestown" winning Tonys.

Best Musical

"Hadestown" has a really good chance of winning but it is by no means guaranteed. Mostly everyone thinks it's going to come down to "Hadestown" or "Tootsie." No one is talking about "Ain't Too Proud", "Beetlejuice" doesn't seem to be a viable candidate (described by my friend as fun but nothing to write home about), and "The Prom" seems to only be really endorsed by the New York Times writers who have an unreasonable amount of power when it comes to what goes to Broadway (they are why "Hadestown" got changed so much and why "Fortress of Solitude," the best musical you've never heard of, never went to Broadway) but not necessarily the deciding vote.

The thing here is really whether the voters want to go safe and traditional with "Tootsie" or new and unique with "Hadestown." In the past few years, they have definitely tended towards the new and unique, but they also have a clear bias against sung-through musicals (see 2017 when "Come From Away" won Best Director but lost Best Musical to "Dear Evan Hansen" in spite of doing really well at the smaller awards). "Hamilton" is a recent exception to this but "Hamilton" was an exception in so many ways.

Overall "Hadestown" is the better show. Both shows have issues with their books but "Tootsie" is tighter and also less interesting. And "Hadestown" has vastly better music. Personally, I'll be surprised if "Tootsie" wins but these kinds of things have happened before.

Best Director

Basically everyone seems to say it will be Rachel Chavkin even if they don't think "Hadestown" will win best musical, and this is very interesting to me as someone who knows a bit more about the interworkings of the Oscars than the Tonys. The Oscars have done this weird and possibly bad thing a lot over the last few years where they give Best Direction to the most artistic and interesting film but Best Picture to whatever movie they enjoyed the most. Last year this was painfully obvious with Alfonso Curon winning for his direction for "Roma" but "Green Book" winning Best Picture. The Tonys don't do this as they usually give both to the same show or they give direction to a revival that will then win Best Revival. But again, 2017 this changed.

That being said "Oklahoma!" seems like the only real competitor here and if Daniel Fish wins over Rachel, I'd be okay with it. "Oklahoma!" was a revelation (and better win Best Revival over "Kiss Me Kate").

Best Book

Here's one where I think "Hadestown" is likely to lose. First of all, the book of "Hadestown" is messy. I love "Hadestown," it's probably my favorite musical of all time, but the book is messy. There are places that are overexplained and a lot of imbalance in how the themes are woven into the story (while still being totally brillant but yeah). There are things that should have been fixed in all the transfers, but they weren't, and it started to feel a bit like writing wack-a-mole following this show since the New York Theatre Workshop.

Also a lot of people find "Hadestown" confusing, which is a problem, but I find this is often a problem of people not being good readers more than anything having to do with the show.

Additionally, Tony voters have no idea what the book is with a sung-through musical. Basically, they don't think there is one. Dialogue is only part of what makes the book, guys.

"Tootsie" will probably win instead. It's got a very tight script and is truthfully very funny. Even though there are as many oops-you-should-edit moments as in "Hadestown," the comedy and the appeal to the particular demographic they were shooting for will win it.

Best Original Score

I feel like "Hadestown" has this one locked down. Even people who find the show incomprehensible seem to love the music. David Yazbek won last year for "Band's Visit" (a vastly better show than "Tootsie") so it's safe to say he's out of the running. I've got nothing else here.

Best Orchestrations

"Hadestown" has a damn good chance here too. Its music is one of its strongest qualities, and if you compare the NYTW to the Broadway in terms of orchestration, there's a lot going on here and it's all good. "Oklahoma!" is a potential opponent because of how they managed to change around the original to make it all read so much better to a modern audience.

Best Performance By An Actress In A Leading Role

I'm going to say Eva has only a 25% chance of winning. Stephanie J. Block seems to be a likely winner because of her previous nominations and the fact that the Tonys often give out awards for career work instead of the single show they are in. Otherwise, "The Cher Show." Really. Some people think Kelli O'Hara has a chance because the Tony voters love their generic starlets but since she's already got a Tony, I think Stephanie and Eva are much more likely competitors. "The Prom" girls seem to cancel each other out (more on the canceling effect two categories below).

If Eva wins I will be PUMPED, but I'm not counting on it.

Best Performance By An Actress In A Featured Role

Everything here comes down to Amber Gray versus Ali Stoker. The "Tootsie" actresses cancel each other out (more on the canceling effect one category below), but Ali is far and away a standout over Mary Testa. To quote my acquaintance, "Amber Gray will win because she's the most interesting woman on Broadway, like how Katrina Lenk won last year." I think she could be right here, but I will propose an additional theory for why Amber may win: Amber originated a role, one she has been working on for years. Ali stole the show in "Oklahoma!" but she stole the show with a classic show stealing role. Also, because those voters like career work, Amber has been around longer (although she wasn't nominated, she was the best thing about "Natasha Pierre" for me). Ali is young and at this point mostly known for her small role in Deaf West's "Spring Awakening."

Ali will be a Tony winner. Maybe this Sunday. Maybe in a few years. If she wins I'll be happy for her and there's no denying she will deserve the award, but I'm rooting for Amber.

Best Performance By An Actor In A Featured Role

I have gone on a journey with this category. Let me start by saying it seems like Andre DeShields will win. Now let me back up and tell you the long adventure I went on to conclude this.

I have now mentioned "canceling out" a lot, which has a tendency to happen with shows where multiple people are nominated (usually in acting). The important thing to note is that just because two people are in the same category does not mean they automatically cancel each other. Daveed Diggs won for featured actor for "Hamilton" over his costars Chris Jackson and Jon Groff, and there's a clear reason why: of the three he was the standout. He was the most dynamic and had the meatiest role. This only works when there isn't an obvious winner in that show. And this is why figuring out this category has been so damn difficult and I still may be wrong.

Originally one of my friends said he thought Andre and Patrick Page would cancel each other out and that the two guys nominated for "Ain't Too Proud" would cancel each other out and we would have the award going to the guy from "Tootsie" (sorry I don't have the names, but for the reference that guy was literally my favorite thing about "Tootsie"). I initally argued that while both "Hadestown" guys do clearly dominate the category in general, Patrick could win because he plays a dynamic character while Andre plays a static one. My friend countered that the Tony voters really love narrator characters, and well, he's right. This idea was expanded by my other friend who pointed out that Andre opens and closes the show and has a lot of the theme-dropping lines, while Patrick doesn't make his entrance until halfway through Act One and that this leaves an impression.

But ultimately it probably comes down to this: career. Andre will get the award because of his career. Every middle aged gay man I've spoken to who didn't understand the show was very proud to tell me that they saw him in "Ain't Misbehavin" in the 70s (to which I said I saw him in "Fortress of Solitude" a few years ago as a jest that none of them seemed to be amused by).

The canceling theory may still play here, but it's hard for me to imagine that the award won't at least go to one of the "Hadestown" guys.

Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Choreography

I'm talking about these three together because my explanation for all three is basically the same. In all three of these categories, "Hadestown" feels like an underdog because it is not flashy in the way shows like "Beetlejuice" or "King Kong" are. They don't have the grandiosity or diversity of costumes of "The Cher Show" or the traditional choreography of "Tootsie."

But "Hadestown" is literally creating a time and place that doesn't really exist; it's not even fantasy, just otherworldliness. The scenic design and costumes anchor you in a place that is like our world but isn't and everything about the choices made, from the shifting set to the details of the costumes, is meant to create this place of kinda New Orleans, kinda 1930s, but also kinda anywhere and now. If "Hadestown" wins scenic design or costume design it will be very deserved and very unconventional.

The choreography has a similar effect. The only real 'dance' numbers are "Living It Up On Top" which is very traditional, "Way Down Hadestown" which feels more frenetic and unplanned, and "Lover's Desire" which is literally a slow dance. The thing is, the choreography throughout the show tells you so much about characters, what they are thinking, and how they are feeling in a way traditional choreography doesn't. Interesting enough Amber Gray was nominated for a dance award for the show. Like with scenic design and costume design, if "Hadestown" wins it will be deserved but a bit uexpected.

Best Lighting Design

Those "Wait For Me" lights will probably win them this Tony but it's worth acknowledging that this show has a lot of amazing lighting design from those swinging lights to the lanterns the Fates use to how Eurydice is able to disappear with the use of light, smoke, and turntable, to the lights of Hadestown, to those colored lights in "How Long" that I am now weirdly obsessed with. But those swinging lights are so iconic that they just might win it on that alone.

Best Sound Design

I know nothing about sound design and no one else seems to either. I noticed some sound design. I also noticed some sound design in "Oklahoma!" I don't know anyone who saw "King Kong" or "Ain't Too Proud." Who knows.

The road is an iconic theme that runs in some of the best and well known American photographers work such as Stephen Shore, Ed Ruscha, Alec Soth and many others . Photographers have traveled these vast landscapes and across thousands of miles to document this country and all that surrounds the road; the landscape, the gas stations, the motels, the diners and everything that comes by its side and its lifestyle.

The Road will run from February 24th through March 27th with a reception and talk on March 12th from 5:00-7:00 pm. The talk will be at 6:00pm.

Graphic novel is a stupid term that often encompasses things that are not novels, but I used it as a blanket term for anything comics I read that were bound rather than stapled. Minis are shorter works, stapled, and generally self-published by the artist, or done by a small press like Shortbox or Youth in Decline. I was totally lazy about crediting creators on series because my actual list for that is a grid, keeping track of each issue. Similarly, when listing creators on trades, I tended to only list writer and artist which is enough for some books, but sometimes there are many more, inkers, and colorists and letterers, and maybe I’ll do better next year.

Support your local library, your local comic shop (especially Hub Comics if you’re in the Boston area), and indie comic shows like MICE.

Award-winning jazz pianist, composer and accordionist Ben Rosenblum has been described as “mature beyond his years,” (Jon Neudorf, Sea of Tranquility), and as an “impressive talent” (C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz), who “caresses [the music] with the reverence it merits” (Bob Doerschuk, Downbeat Magazine). Ben is based primarily in New York City, and is a graduate of the Columbia-Juilliard program (in 2016). His original music combines his extensive knowledge of the history of jazz with a free-wheeling, modern melodic sensibility and powerful narrative approach to the piano. His profound passion for jazz, swing and world music genres finds expression in his unique fusion of harmonic and rhythmic elements from a wide array of sources, and gives rise to a signature compositional sound and style at once iconoclastic and deeply rooted in such figures as Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly. Ben’s first priority in his composition and in his playing is always narrative – to tell a compelling story with his music, while reaching the hearts of his audience, connecting on an emotional, an intellectual and a spiritual level.

Reviewers of his debut album Instead – released in 2017 with bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Billy Hart – have been impressed by his musicality and his tasteful playing in light of his immense technical skill. Bob Doerschuk of Downbeat Magazine gave the album four stars, and wrote, “He has the chops to shoot off a few fireworks, … but that doesn’t seem to be a priority when covering sacred material.” C. Michael Bailey notes approvingly: “there do emerge conservatoire aces with grit in their imagination and a facility to express such in their playing. Ben Rosenblum is one such performer/composer. The Julliard-Columbia trained pianist brings a freighter of technique to the keyboard, while still maintaining enough earthiness in his playing to satisfy even the fussiest listener.” Fred Stal of RG Magazine most recently described his experience of listening to Ben’s live CD release performance: “The music keeps you on your feet and not wanting to miss a single moment of magic. … Raindrops from heaven poured down with style and grace from Rosenblum’s piano.”

Since the release of Ben’s debut album, Ben has been touring regularly – both nationally and internationally – celebrating the album and collaborating with artists around the world. Ben’s trio made debuts in Japan and in Canada in 2018. During his two-week tour of Japan, Ben performed in eight different cities, including in Tokyo at Akasaka B-flat, and in Yokohama at Himawari-no-sato Concert Hall with famed koto player Yuko Watanabe. Highlights of his Canada tour included appearances at Upstairs Jazz in Montreal, Maelstrom and Bar Ste-Angele in Quebec City and the Southminster “Doors Open For Music” Concert Series in Ottawa. In the United States, Ben has traveled extensively throughout the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast, with trips planned for the South and Southwest. These domestic tours have featured performances at some of the most well-respected venues in the country, including Kuumbwa Jazz Center (Santa Cruz), Ravinia (Chicago), Cliff Bells (Detroit), An Die Musik (Baltimore), The Bop Stop (Cleveland), Mezzrow (New York City) and many others. As a sideman, Ben has had further opportunities to tour the world. In 2018, he traveled for three weeks through Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Serbia with Astrid Kuljanic, during which the group performed at multiple festivals, including the Ljeto na Bundeka Festival in Zagreb and the Soboško Poletje Festival in Murska Sobota. He also performed for two nights at the Blue Note in Beijing alongside famed jazz singer Deborah Davis.

Born and raised in New York City, Ben had the opportunity to study with some of the most influential figures in jazz piano, including Frank Kimbrough, Bruce Barth, Ben Waltzer and Roy Assaf. At the early age of sixteen, the originality of his work was already being recognized with numerous awards, including the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award (2010), the Downbeat Student Music Award for Best Original Song (2010) and the Downbeat Student Music Award for Best Arrangement (2011). As a result, even before entering Columbia, Ben was commissioned by the XIBUS World Orchestra to write a piece for performance at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall in 2012. Ben has continued to earn numerous distinctions and honors in recent years. In 2015, he was a finalist at the American Jazz Pianist Competition in Melbourne, Florida, and in 2016, at the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition in Jacksonville, Florida. In 2018, he earned further recognition from the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award competition in the form of an honorable mention, and he was featured at the ASCAP Foundation’s 2018 “We Write The Songs” event at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.

In addition to his own work, Ben often collaborates with other musicians. He has worked extensively with Grammy-nominated singer Ryland Angel on several compositional projects, including the project Unspoken, which premiered at the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, in November of 2016. His debut album Instead has received very favorable reviews from a wide range of sources throughout the world, including Downbeat Magazine, All About Jazz, Drumset Magazine (Italy) and The Jazz Writer (Germany).

Ben performed with the Bachiana Brasileira Orchestra at Lincoln Center (conducted by Joao Carlos Martins and featuring Dave Brubeck), and he was a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium with the New York Harmonic Band (conducted by Reona Ito). He traveled to New Delhi, India, to perform at a Max India Benefit, and was a participant at Il Grande Veggio, in Perugia, Italy. He has played at the Masten Jazz Festival (Buffalo), the Richmond Jazz Festival (Richmond), the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival (Maryland), Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival (Manhattan), the DUMBO Arts Festival (Brooklyn), Musikfest (Bethlehem, PA) and the Music Mountain Festival (Connecticut). He has also appeared at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, the Appel Room at Lincoln Center, Ryles Jazz Club, Webster Hall, Symphony Space, The Blue Note, Smoke, Smalls and a host of other music venues throughout the northeast.

Ben has worked extensively with such jazz luminaries as Curtis Lundy, Neal Smith, Winard Harper, Wayne Escoffery and Deborah Davis, and he has performed in bands led by Bobby Watson, TS Monk, Chris Washburne and Warren Wolf. In addition, he has shared the stage with many other jazz legends, including Wycliffe Gordon, Brian Lynch, Phil Woods, Houston Person, Jerry Dodgion, Eliot Zigmund, Clarence Penn, Craig Handy, Dave Stryker, James Cammack, Ameen Saleem, Bob Nieske, Steve Nelson, Yasushi Nakamura, Essiet Essiet, Willie Williams, Patience Higgins, Josh Evans, Kenny Davis and Rogerio Boccato.?

While at Columbia University, Ben founded the Columbia Jazz House, a student-run jazz advocacy group that promotes jazz on campus through concerts, educational workshops and jam sessions. On December 28th, 2015, the Columbia Jazz House was featured in a New York Times article titled “Melodies Night and Day in this Columbia Dorm.”

Greg Feingold started playing bass at the age of 10. He quickly realized that bass was something he would pursue for the rest of his life and was accepted to the Chicago Academy for the Arts. After graduating from the Academy, Greg was given a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music. Greg was very active both locally and nationally while at Berklee. He began playing with the International String Trio and performing regularly with Berklee faculty such as Bill Pierce, Neal Smith, Jon Hazilla, Doug Johnson, Rebecca Cline and many others. After graduating, Greg moved to New York and began playing in Winard Harper’s Jelli Posse. Throughout his stay in New York, he worked with legendary jazz performers such as Jimmy Cobb, Eric Reed, Eric Harland, Cyrus Chestnut, Steve Turre, Jim Rotondi, Jackie Ryan, Stephen Scott as well as continuing to tour with the International String Trio and the Valinor Quartet. Greg moved to Seattle in 2015 to change his surroundings and currently performs with a variety of groups around the west coast. He can be seen performing regularly with Thomas Marriott, Julian MacDonough, Miles Black and other great local Seattle musicians. He also co-leads the 200 Trio which performs around the country as one of the up and coming jazz guitar trios.

Jazz drummer and educator, Ben Zweig, “is able to combine history with the current musical environment, making it sound fresh” (Don Sickler). After moving to NYC in 2011, the 26 year old has accompanied an impressive array of jazz luminaries, including; Randy Weston, Johnny O’Neal, Larry Ridley, David Williams, Roy Hargrove, Deborah Davis, Joe Cohn, Champian Fulton, Jerry Dodgion, and Steve Nelson. Described by downbeat as “especially crisp and articulate,” Zweig has presented his personal sound performed with tours throughout the continental US, Asia and Canada. He currently tours regularly with Ben Rosenblum’s trio and leads a bi-weekly residency hosting the Sunday late night jam sessions at Smalls Jazz Club in NYC. Zweig is an avid educator. He has taught clinics across the country with the Champian Fulton quartet and has also directed the after-school percussion program at WHEELS middle and high school. Mentored by master drummers such as Joe Farnsworth, Billy Hart, Kenny Washington, Rodney Green, Justin DiCioccio, Christopher Brown, John Riley, and Rogerio Boccato, Ben is committed to passing down the information he has received from these legends. In his formative education, Ben was classically trained by Kenneth Piascik, culminating in performances with the NAfME All-Eastern Orchestra and as principal percussionist with the MENC All-National Concert Band. He currently maintains a private drum studio in Morningside-Heights with students of all ages. Ben received his B.M. and a M.M. from the Manhattan School of Music.
