THE NANNY: CHAPTER 29

Pairing: Andy Barber x Annie Johnson (OFC)

Summary: Working and single parenting is not easy. Andy needs to find a nanny for his son Jacob. Annie, an education degree student at Lasell University, comes to their lives just in time for the big changes in Andy’s life.

It’s been two weeks now since the case over the custody of Jake began and Laurie wasn’t backing down. Andy hadn’t found any reason as in why Laurie wanted to have Jake back, either she wasn’t hiding anything or she was very good at hiding it.

“Ok, honey.” Andy walked out of their closet fixing his tie, “Are you sure you can come to court today?”

“Yes, you know today I only have 3 classes. There will be no problem.” She said as she finished to brush her hair. Andy walked behind her and kiss the top of her head.

“I like that dress.” He said looking to the flowered lilac midi dress with heart neckline and short sleeves she was wearing.

“Thanks! You bought it.”

“Do you remember what I told you?”

“To answer with all honesty everything they ask.”

“Good, girl. Remember, at 11. See you later!”

Annie went to school and tried to pay attention to all of her classes of the day but it was impossible, she was getting nervous as the time passed. It was her last class and it was pouring rain outside.

“Sure you don’t want us to come with you?” Sharon asked when she saw Annie couldn’t stop moving her hands.

“No, I’ll be good.”

“Good luck, if you need anything at all.” Mark said.

“I’ll call you.” They walked out the building, the rain was heavier than before. “Guess I’ll have to run to my car. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

It was 11:15 and Annie wasn’t at court.

“Where is she?” Lynn asked.

“I don’t know,” Andy took his phone and send her a text.

Not even 5 seconds later Annie came in running, wet from head to toe, her hair was drenched, and right when she was about to made it to the front, she slipped falling on her ass in front of every one.

“SHIT!” The deputy ran to help her stand.

“You ok, miss?” He grabbed her arm.

“Yeah, yeah! Sorry I’m late. It’s raining.”

“Miss…” The judge looked at the paper he had, “Johnson?”

“Yeap! That’s me! Hi!”

“Please, Miss Johnson, come to the bench to take your oath.”

Annie walked carefully to the stand and sat on the chair in there, she waved a little to Andy who waved back and smiled. Laurie didn’t miss this interaction.

“Lawyer Canavan, since your witness is already here, you can began.”

“Thank you, your honor.” Lynn walked towards the stand, “Your name, please.”

“Annabelle Marie Johnson.”

“Perfect. How long have you known the Barbers?”

“Since March this year.”

“How did you come to work for them?”

“Mr. Barber called me because Mrs. Duffy recommended me to be his nanny. He told me to come to his house for an interview and he said he needed someone to take care of Jake because he was going to have more work due to his promotion.”

“In all of the time you had work there, have you seen Mr. Barber been aggressive towards his son?”

“Never! He is a great dad, very loving. Andy hugs and kisses Jake every time he has the chance. He had yelled at Jake a couple of times, like every parent, but he had never been physical. They play, they spend time together, they go fishing and when Jake needed help Andy didn’t hesitate to look for someone to help him.” She smiled looking at Andy who saw her with love in his eyes.

“Mr. Barber mentioned you have been great help in the psychological process Jake’s been having.”

“Well, I suppose. I spend a lot of time with Jake and I just want him to have a happy childhood. Jake is a great kid, sweet, funny, so smart. I don’t want to see him suffer.” She looked at Laurie when she said that last line.

“Thank you, Miss Johnson. No more questions your honor.”

“Lawyer Anderson, your witness.”

“Thank you, your Honor.” He stood up and walked towards Annie. “Good morning, Miss Johnson, thank you for keep us waiting. I hope you are alright, it was quite a hard fall.” Annie was shivering by now since she was drying.

“I’m ok.” She gave him tight smile.

“Have you and Mr. Barber ever argue?”

“Once, ammm it was early when I first started working for him. He was stressed and he missed dinner with his kid. I got angry so we yelled, but other than that, never. He apologized and I kept working for him.”

“What were your duties?”

“I needed to come to his house at 3, took care of Jake, played with him, and helped him with some activities they left him at day care. I made them dinner. I left by 7 or 8 tops. Monday to Thursday and the weekends were off. Later I also started to cook lunch for them.”

“Excellent! So, do you live with the Barbers?”

“I do now. I wasn’t when he first hired me. I came and went as my shift ended.”

“What change?”

“I had some personal issues and they took me in. It was very nice of them to help me when I needed the most.”

“What happened?”

“I broke up with my then boyfriend, he attacked me and Andy helped me through the process.”

“Always the gentleman.” Richard turned to see Andy, “Does he still pay you?”

“Yes, of course. I take care of Jake and the house. I cook and I clean.”

“What is your relationship now with Mr. Barber?”

“He is my boss.” She looked at Andy who gave her a small nod, “And I’m his girlfriend.”

“Girlfriend? I hardly think that could be considered a pure love relationship since he is paying you to be with him.” Annie opened his mouth not believing this guy.

“Objection! Your honor!” Lynn said.

“Hey!” Andy was stood by now, “What’s your problem?!”

“Mr. Anderson! That was way out of line!” Judge Choi said.

“I’m not a whore!” Annie was fuming now. “Andy hired me to be Jake’s nanny! I needed the job because I am a student who needs to pay for things! And then we fell in love! How is that any close to what you are implying? YOU ASS!”

“Miss Johnson!” Judge Choi said, “Calm down.”

“He started!”

“Very well, I apologize for whatever you all think I was implying.” Richard said with a mocking tone. Annie could not believe the nerve on this guy. “Do you know Mr. Barber’s dad is in prison?”

“Yes, of course.”

“How do you know that?”

“He told me.”

“Why?”

“Well, I don’t know if you are married or not, but in a relationship is important not to have secrets. He knows about my background and I know about his. His dad is in jail for raping and murdering a girl. They have no relationship.”

“Are you afraid of Mr. Barber?”

“Pff why? Look at him! He is a cute soft giant bear! He is one of the nicest men I’ve ever met, after my dad and my brother. Oh and he is sexy too!”

“Miss Johnson.” Judge Choi said. “Just answer what they ask.”

“Sorry. I’m not lying though.” You heard Andy Laughed a bit and saw Lynn elbowed him to stop.

“Is it true you attacked my client?”

“Mmmmm,” She made a thoughtful face, now she was certainly mocking him, “Nop.”

“No? You know lying in court is a felony, right? You seem like a smart girl.”

“Fine! She showed up at our house…”

“But is not your house, is Andy’s.”

“Can I continue, or are you going to keep interrupting me?”

“Go on.”

“As I was saying, she showed up at our house trying to look for Jake. She tried to walk into the house, and I avoided her to do so because it is my job to take care of him.”

“But why, she is his mother after all.”

“Some mother! She left Jake when he was a baby! And by the way, do you know she hasn’t give any money to Andy to take care of Jake?” Richard was taken aback when Annie said that. “If she left then why she never gave Andy any money to take care of her kid? That’s what happens when people get divorce right?” Richard just looked at her. “Right?!”

“Right.” Richardson said.

“That woman has no right over Jake. She has no right to come here 3 years later, just because she feels guilty, or for whatever reason she wants him back. Jake doesn’t know her, and she doesn’t need him, if she did, she would have done this right after she left them! And I can assure you neither Andy nor Jake need her. She did them a favor!” She sneezed after she finished.

“I believe Miss Johnson needs to go get change. No more questions your honor. Thank you, miss.”

“Thank you, Miss Johnson, you are dismissed.” Judge Choi said. “We will continue this tomorrow.”

Annie walked to Lynn and Andy, and he rapidly reached for her enveloping her with his warm suit jacket.

“Come here,” Andy hugged her and rubbed his hands in her back.

“Did I do well?”

“You were perfect.” He gave her a kiss on the nose and she sneezed again. “Come on, honey. Let’s go home. You need a warm bath.”

Laurie stared at Andy and Annie, in all the time they were together he never looked at her the way he was looking at Annie now.

Once at home, Annie went to take a hot shower and changed her clothes. When she came down the stairs she saw Lynn sitting at the dinner table surrounded by papers.

“Where is Andy?”

“He went to pick up Jake.”

“I’m making some tea, you want some?”

“Sure, thanks!”

Annie walked to the kitchen and put the pot in the stove.

“Can I ask you how did you know Laurie wasn’t giving Andy money?”

“A friend of mine has divorced parents and he mentioned that the other day. Andy never talks about money."

“He never wanted to ask Laurie for money, he was too proud to do it. You know him.”

“I just assumed she didn’t pay for anything because Andy once told me she resigned to her parent rights. I don’t know, probably shouldn’t have said that.”

“No, actually it was good. That way the judge could see Laurie hasn’t been part of Jake’s life in any sense.”

Annie walked holding the two mugs and sat in front of Lynn.

“What happened the day Laurie left?”

“Andy hasn’t told you?”

“I think he told me what he wanted me to know.”

“I just know she left. Andy showed up in my house that night. He had been working for the county for over a year maybe. I never expect him to be in my house crying asking for help, he doesn’t have the type.” Annie giggled knowing very well what she meant, “I advised him to talk to her, to try to fix her marriage, and he did, but apparently Laurie had different plans.” Lynn took a sip of her tea, “Then she send a letter saying she didn’t want to be involved in their lives and even thought I told Andy he could sue her for leaving them and not giving child support, he never went for it. I think that deep down he thought Laurie was going to come to her senses and come back, but she never did.”

“Well, that worked for me, He is mine now.” Lynn laughed, “Do you think you could win?”

“I’m not sure anymore and I hate saying that.”

Summary: Working and single parenting is not easy. Andy needs to find a nanny for his son Jacob. Annie, an education degree student at Lasell University, comes to their lives just in time for the big changes in Andy’s life.

It was Friday, Andy picked Jake from day care and headed back home to have lunch. Andy heated up some of the leftovers they had from the meals Annie had prepared for them during the week.

“Dad…” Jake was biting his piece of chicken while he held it with his hands.

“Jake, use the fork.” The kid ignored him

“Is Annie coming?”

“Is Friday, she doesn’t come on Fridays, you know that.”

“But you say yesterday you calling her.”

“I know, but I don’t think she wants to talk to me.”

“Why?”

“We had a fight.”

“Why?”

“Ammm, I was angry, and she was upset and sometimes adults say things they don’t mean.”

“Why?”

“I… don’t know.”

“Mrs. Williams say we haf to learn to say soggy.”

“When did you become so clever?” Jake shrugged and kept eating his chicken. “Ok, after we finish our lunch we will go to her school, so I can talk to her.”

“Can she haf movie night wid us?”

“I’ll ask, but she might say no, and if she says no, you’ll have to come with me to the office, I have some things to do, ok?”

“Ok!”

After they finished their lunch, they left the house on their way to Lasell. Once they arrived, they started walking around not really knowing where to go.

“Hi, excuse me,” Andy stopped in front of a group of students. “I’m looking for…”

“Annie!” Jake told them, wide smile across his face.

“Sorry, I’m looking for the education building, you know where that is?”

“Yes, you walk behind this building, cross the gardens, turn to your left and then you’ll see it, is not that far.”

“Thank you, come on Jake.”

It was the last class of the day and Annie couldn’t stop thinking about Jake or his dad for that matter. Andy will definitely need another nanny, and she hoped he found one soon. Annie was looking at a blank point in the wall in front of her, while the professor explained the assignment for the weekend. The noises of the chairs and the movement of her classmates brought her back to reality.

“Wait… what did he say?” Annie asked to her friends.

“Darling, are you ok? You haven’t been paying attention all day.” Mark said

Sharon, Mark and Annie grabbed their things and walked out of the classroom to finally go home.

“No, I’m not.”

“Have you told Daniel you were fired?” Sharon asked.

“No, yesterday I came to the library until it was 7:10 for me to come back.”

“Honey, you have to tell him, he is gonna notice” Mark commented. “Or find another job.”

“You are the only person I know with balls that would yell to her boss.” Sharon Joked.

“You weren’t there! I was angry! I wasn’t thinking, and Jake was crying!

The three of them left the education building. They stood there talking about the assignment their last professor gave them, and commenting about the topic they were going to use.

“Oh my God! Look at that piece of candy standing under the three” Mark told their friends pointed with his noise to the right.

Annie turned only to see Andy with Jake staring at her. The little boy moving in his arms to be released. Jake jumped out of his dad’s arms. Andy was wearing a navy blue suit and he had his sunglasses on.

“That’s Andy.” Annie said nonchalantly without taking his eyes off of him.

“THAT’S YOUR BOSS?!” Both Sharon and Mark screamed.

“SHHHH!!!!”

“WOW! You said he was handsome, but not hottie-hot-fuck-me handsome. I would give him some.” Mark said licking his lips.

“Shut up!”

“Annie! Annie!” Jake ran to her arms and she picked him up and hugged him tight. “I missing you!”

“I missed you too” Annie kissed his cheek. “What are you doing here?”

“Daddy say we need to find you. Who are you?”

Jake stared at her friends and they smiled. They were so focused on the child they didn’t noticed Andy walked to where they were.

“Hey.”

“Hi, Andy.” There was a long silence before Annie put Jake down and Andy continued.

“Can we… Jake wants you to have movie night with us, if that’s ok with you.” Andy licked his lips “I mean I don’t know if you are busy, or if you have plans with your boyfriend…”

“She is totally free kind sir” Mark said.

“Totally.” Sharon repeated with a wide smile.

“But we have the assignment…” Annie began but Mark cut her off.

“Assignment? Oh no honey, you misheard the professor.”

“Alright.” Annie gave her friends funny looks. “I guess I’m free.”

“Yeah! Pizza! Pizza! Pizza! Jake was jumping up and down between her and Andy.

“Shall we?” Andy told her offering his arm.

“You go ahead, I need to tell them something.”

Andy hold Jake’s hand and walk to the right where they were standing. Annie turned and looked at their friends.

“Please, fuck the guy.” Mark told her “I will if you don’t”

“You two are crazy. He is my boss.”

“He fired you.” Sharon pointed.

“I have Daniel.”

“Your boss is worth like three Daniels, and I bet his dick is bigger.” Sharon joked.

“Hey, that’s mean!”

“And about the homework, you can send your part tomorrow or on Sunday.” Sharon said.

“Homework?” Annie told them. “I’m sorry but apparently I don’t have homework, you do.” Annie turned to leave. “And you better put my name on the paper, or I will murder you. Sharon take my car, I’ll pick it tomorrow.”

Annie gave her the key and ran towards Andy and Jake. They walked to the parking lot and climbed on the black Audi.

“So,” Andy began. “I have a meeting…”

“I knew there was a catch” Annie raised her eyebrow to him.

“As I was saying, this meeting won’t take long… I hope. You two can go home and play for a while. When I’m done, I’ll get the pizza and we’ll watch the movie. Deal?” Andy looked both Jake and Annie who nodded at the plan.

A couple of minutes later they arrived to the house. Andy left as soon as they climbed out the car. Jake wasn’t in the mood of doing anything, he said he wanted to lay down and stare at the ceiling, and they did, but it got boring after a couple of minutes.

“How about we play rock band?”

“What is that?” Jake asked with big eyes.

“I put some music and we sing and dance.”

Jake didn’t seem too convince about this game, so Annie took out her phone and look for an aux cable to connect to the stereo. She hasn’t seen a stereo since she lived with her parents, which make her question how old Andy was, she thought he couldn’t be as old as his parents were; perhaps 40 tops. She connected her phone and music began to play, it didn’t take much for Jake to start dancing around Annie.

It was almost 7:30 when Andy came back with the pizza ready for movie night. When he got out the car, he could hear the music coming out of the house, Anybody Seen my Baby by the Rolling Stones was blasting trough the walls when he opened the door. He walked to the living room, leaving the pizza on the small table at the entrance, he saw Jake jumping up and down on the floor and Annie was giving him her back, he saw her up and down; she was swaying her hips at the beat of the music and singing pointing at his son. The jeans and white top she was wearing fit her perfectly. When the song came to an end, Andy started clapping. Annie jumped and looked back.

“How much did you see?”

“You are a great dancer.” He smiled at her and took his jacket and tie off “Who’s ready for a movie?”

“ME!!!!!” Jake jumped on the couch finding his spot for the movie night.

“Why don’t you settle with Jake while I change?” Annie nodded and Andy walked to his room.

10 minutes later Andy came down wearing some black sweatpants, a white V-neck t-shirt and he was bare foot. Annie just stare at him for a moment before looking down at her hands. Jake was in charge of choosing the movie, and as they expected he chose The Avengers. The three of them sat on the couch, Jake was in between Andy and Annie enjoying his pizza slice and chips. During the movie Andy glanced at Annie, her soft jawline lighted with the light from the TV; Annie turned to see him and Andy put his attention back on the movie, she could see his long eyelashes and the way his muscles tighten on his neck. Half way through the film Jake laid on Annie’s lap and a little later he fell asleep.

“Do you want to finish the movie?” Andy said out of the blue turning to see her.

“Mmm no, not really, I already know how it ends.” She smiled, “I think I should go home.”

“Let me put Jake on his bed, and I’ll drive you.”

Andy took Jake in his arms and went upstairs. Annie started to clean the little mess they made on the coffee table and washed the dishes. She was about to finish when Andy cleared her throat.

“Do you have to leave already? I was hoping we could talk.”

Annie looked at the clock in the kitchen, it was 9:30.

“I could stick around a little longer.”

“I mean, I know you have to go home to your boyfriend, I don’t want to cause you problems”

“He is out, he’s never home early on Fridays. His classes end around 7 and then he always goes out with his friends after school”

“Great!” Andy said a little bit too excited, “Beer?”

“No, thank you. I don’t like beer. Water is fine.”

“WHAT?! That’s a crime!” Andy said grabbing a beer from the fridge, then went to the cabinet.

“Beer tastes bad, and smells even worse.”

“I have red wine” Andy showed her the bottle.

“Well…I guess I could have a glass.”

Andy opened the bottle, served her a glass and headed back to the living room. They sat down and put their drinks on the table in front of them; they stayed there, silence filling the air.

“I…” they said at the same time.

“No no, me first.” Andy cut her. “I wanted to apologize for the way I yelled at you last Wednesday, I was stressed and you were right. Jake didn’t deserve my behavior nor you. I need you… we need you, Jake loves you, and I want you to know that the job is still yours if you want it.” He took his wallet out his pocket and give her the payment of the week.

“Really?” She said taking the money, “After the way I snapped and basically called you a terrible father?

“Yeah, even after that.” Andy took a sip of his beer. “And also, I was hoping we could start over, so, “Hi,” Andy extended his hand. “I’m Andrew Stephen Barber, born and raised in Boston. But you can call me Andy.”

“I’m Annabelle Marie Johnson” she said holding his hand “also born and raised in Boston. Everyone calls me Annie.”

It was almost summer break. It was a typical Thursday afternoon. The weather outside was warm and sunny. Jake and Annie were in the backyard playing to be the Avengers, she was always the bad guy and Jake loved to save the world as Captain America. It was just 5:30 when the front door opened, Andy could hear Jake’s laugh on the back yard. He walked to the back door and saw Jake and Annie jumping on the trampoline. Andy leaned against the door frame watching them play, Annie was wearing a beautiful pink sundress and once in a while she let herself fall for Jake to catch her. She grabbed Jake by his ribs and tickle him, making Jake kicked and squawked. Annie looked up and saw Andy staring at them.

“You’re early.” Annie mentioned. She and Jake climbed down the trampoline.

“We didn’t have much to do at the office, they send me home. You can leave if you want, or you can stay and have ice cream with us.”

“Yeah! Ice cream!” Jake run to his dad.

“Thanks,” she put her sandals on, “but I could use the time to check some things for my exams next week.”

“Are you sure? Is Chocolate ice cream?” Andy said while they got in the house.

“If you give Jake that flavor now,” She whispered in his ear sending him shivers down his spine, “you won’t be able to put him to bed later tonight.”

“I think I can handle him.”

“And is cute that you think you can Mr. Barber.” She winked at him.

Annie grabbed her bag, got in the car and headed to the library. She was on her way to the campus, when she changed her mind. Daniel has been telling her nonstop they didn’t spend time together lately, that he missed her and since she was free for now, decided to surprise him.

She parked her car and climbed the stairs of her building. She carefully opened the door, making sure not to make noise to surprise his boyfriend. As she walked to the bedroom she listened soft moaning, panthing and grunting, the closer she got the stronger they became.  The door of the bedroom was opened and there it was Daniel on top of a blonde girl trusting hard into her; Annie froze, watching how his boyfriend was fucking another girl in the bed they shared.

“Are… you sure…no one… will… bother us?” the blonde girl asked him with each trust.

“Mmhm… my roommate is not here till 7:30…”

“YOU ARE A FUCKING ASSHOLE!!!!”

Annie screamed at the couple, both Daniel and the girl jumped off the bed.

“Babe! Is not what you think!”

“Babe?!” the girl said looking at Daniel.

Daniel stand covering his erection with the pillow walking to her trying to hold her.

“LEAVE ME ALONE! I HATE YOU!”

She turned around to leave the apartment but Daniel followed her.

“Babe, please! Don’t leave! Let me explain! I love you! You are my girl…”

“NO! I’M NOT!” she turned to see him, “APPARENTLY I’M JUST YOUR ROOMATE! I WANTED TO SURPRISE YOU! AND YOU….”

She didn’t finish the sentence, lifted her hand and slapped him hard on the face, leaving a mark on his check. Daniel stood there looking at her with an angry expression and said nothing, Annie turned around, took her bag and keys, and left the building. It wasn’t until she was in her car she noticed she was crying, she didn’t know if she was sad or angry, maybe both, the only thing she knew was she needed to be far away from there. Annie started the engine of her car and drove until she was outside his brother’s house in Boston. As soon as the door open and saw her brother she broke down.

“I thought he loved me… I thought he was the one!”

“Shhh, breath. He is an asshole honey, he doesn’t deserve you.” his brother told her while rubbing her back.

“He said I was just his roommate!” Annie kept sobbing.

“Don’t yell, you’re gonna wake Denisse up. You are welcome to stay you know that.”

“I can’t I have school tomorrow and the exams are next week.”

“And where are you gonna stay?”

After Annie left his brother’s house, she went straight to Sharon’s apartment, she told her what happened and Sharon told her she could stay there until she found a new place to live. Since Sharon already had a roommate, Annie had to sleep on the couch, and she wasn’t going to complain about it. The next day Mark found out what happened and he was fuming; he never liked Daniel, he thought he was a controller and in general a jerk, and once he heard what he did to his friend he hated him even more. Later that Friday, Sharon and Mark went to her house to pick some things for her, some books, her iPad, her computer and some clothing.

“Where is she?!” Daniel asked them as soon as they were inside the apartment.

They ignored him, took a bag and threw her stuff in it.

“I’m fucking talking to you!” Daniel yelled, “Tell me where the fuck my girlfriend is?!”

“Your girlfriend?? Mark stood in front of him, “After what you did to her, she is not your girlfriend anymore.”

“I need to talk to her, I have to explain”

“Explain what?!” Sharon snapped, “How you cheated on her? Cuz she already saw it! There is no need to explain that!

“You’re an asshole and you’re always will be, I’m glad she notice in time what kind of man you truly are.” Both Sharon and Mark headed to the door, “oh! And she said you have to stop calling her.”

Annie spend the entire weekend crying, every time she thought about Daniel she could only see the image of him on top of that girl, and we can add the fact that she was also stressed because of her finals so she was barely sleeping. She looked like a zombie, and felt gloomy but she had to put on a smile for Jake while taking care of him, it wasn’t the kid’s fault her life was falling apart, so she acted like everything was ok.

It was a Wednesday, Annie and Jake where in his room playing with some of his hot wheels, when Jake stood up and ran to the bathroom. She was alone and all of the sudden everything came back to her, Daniel, the exams, the lack of sleep. Annie started sobbing harder and harder, she could barely breathe; when Jake came back she found Annie covering her face, shaking and crying uncontrollably.

“Annie?” She looked at Jake, her face wet because of her tears. “no… no cry” Jake hugged her and patted her in the back.

“I’m sorry sweetie… I’m…”

“No cry” he hugged her thither.

Little by little Annie calmed down, she took a deep breath and saw Jake, who was worried and teary.

“I’m so sorry Jake”

“Why you cry?”

“Cuz I’m sad and tired… and...”

“Not be sad,” Jake walked to his bed and picked up his teddy bear, “here, he take care of you.”

“Thank you” Annie laughed.

“Come” Jake took her hand and made her stand. They walked to the bed and Jake patted his mattress, “you here”

“Jake I don’t fit in your bed”

“Yes, you are”

Annie shook her head and laid on Jake’s bed holding the teddy bear. She made herself comfortable laying on her side in fetal position, otherwise she wouldn’t fit on the bed. Jake went to his small bookcase and grabbed a book.

“I read story, and you slepf.”

“You don’t know how to read”

“Yes, I am, I’m big boy!”

“hahahaha alright, read to me.”

The book didn’t even have words, there were just images but Jake did his best to tell a story for her to sleep.

“Onces upon da times, was a princess named Annie…” Annie closed her eyes focusing on Jake’s voice.

Once Jake finished “reading” his story, he looked down and saw his nanny was sleeping peacefully, he took his blue blanket, put it over her shoulders, and gave her a kiss on the cheek. He stood up, grabbed some toys and went downstairs to play.

Around 7:30 Andy arrived, the house was complete silent, the lights were off and there was no smell of food around.

“Jake?” Andy walked to the kitchen “Annie?”

Jake came running touching his lips with his small finger.

“Hi buddy, what are you doing?”

“shhhh, I playing da shhh game.” He whispered.

“Really? Why?”

“Annie is sleeping”

“What?!”

“shhhhh!” Jake said with no patience.

“Alright shhhh, where is she?”

Jake walked to the stairs and pointed up, Andy hold Jake on his arms and went upstairs, Jake’s door was slightly opened.

“Annie cry, daddy” Andy looked at his son confused.

“Do you know why?”

“Sad,” Jake thought a little bit more, “stress?” he shrugged

“Ok, let’s try not to make noise ok?” Jake nodded and put his kid on the floor.

“Go to my room Jake” The kid ran to the other bedroom.

Andy walked in the bedroom, and sat on the little space there was on the bed, he could see the puffiness in her eyes but in general she seemed relaxed. He knew she was taking her finals so maybe she was just having a tough week. Andy touched her cheek with the back of his fingers and she smiled on her sleep, which made him smiled as well.

“Annie?” Andy kept stroking her cheek, “Annie, honey, wake up.”

Her eyes fluttered open, Andy was a blurry image, she closed her eyes again and heard Andy laughed a little. This time she opened her eyes and saw Andy clearly.

“Oh my god!” She stood up quickly. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry!”

“Hey, it’s ok” Andy said with amusement once he saw the mark of the pillow on her cheek.

“What time is it?

“Ammm,” Andy looked at his watch “It’s 7:35”

“I didn’t make you dinner,” She was freaking out. Never, in all of her time of being a babysitter, she had fallen asleep while working.

“Don’t worry about it” Andy stood up “Did you sleep well?”

Annie turned around and headed to the stairs, she almost tripped and fall if it wasn’t because Andy grabbed her by the arm, and pulled her against his chest.

“Alright stop!” their faces were closed, “Calm down, so you fell asleep, is not a big deal.”

“I’m sorry” her eyes became watery, “I’m truly sorry” she started sobbing and Andy wrapped his arms around her, and she buried her face on his chest, she could smell his cologne, and he could felt how tense she was.

“Wanna tell me what’s wrong?” she shook her head, “Are you stressed?” Annie nodded, “Why?”

“I don’t wanna lose my scholarship” she lift her head, “and I feel I did terrible on my exams.”

She wasn’t lying, but she didn’t tell him about everything she was going through.

“I’m sure you did well, you are very smart,” Andy rubbed her back, “Don’t worry about dinner.”

“How can I not be worried?!!” she let go of his embrace, “You pay me for it! And I fell asleep while I was supposed to be taking care of Jake!”

“Well, we can always have pizza or Chinese” Andy said putting his hands on his pockets.

“Why are you not angry?!” Annie said annoyed.

“Cuz you are upset,” Andy grabbed her chin up, her brown honey eyes were red “and last time you were upset and I was angry I fired you remember?”

Annie nodded and looked at her feet, “So,” Andy continued, “Since I really don’t want to fire you; I need you to go home and rest. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

He gave her a peck on the cheek and walked out of Jake’s room leaving Annie alone. She touched her cheek, a faded smiled appeared on her lips, took a deep breath and left for the night.

CHAPTER 12

THE NANNY: CHAPTER 12

Summary: Working and single parenting is not easy. Andy needs to find a nanny for his son Jacob. Annie, an education degree student at Lasell University, comes to their lives just in time for the big changes in Andy’s life.

A/N: I don’t know anything about laws in the States (I don’t even know the laws in my own country). Also, According to Google Auburndale is one of the thirteen villages within the city of Newton, so I assume the Newton police can also work in cases in any other of those villages… if not, I’m sorry hahahaha, remember, just a work of fiction.

Also, apparently it will take a week or two to acquire a restraining order, except in severe cases, if the person is at risk the order will be issued and approved the same day.

Annie was sitting at the passenger sit, while her brother was on the back. Her leg was bouncing and her hands were shaking. Andy´s hand rested on top of her thigh.

“Honey, relax” He intertwined his fingers with hers “Remember, he is not there.”

“Do you think there will be any problem if we go to the police here? I mean, the whole thing happened back in Auburndale.”

“No, is still part of Newton so it really doesn’t matter if you talk to the police here or there.”

Tom didn’t said a word, looking at the interaction between Andy and his sister, they definitely had a relationship beyond boss and employee. They didn’t let go to each other the entire trip to the police station; but at least Annie wasn’t shaking anymore.

Once at the police station, they walked directly to Pam’s office. Once inside Annie sat, while the other two remained stood behind her.

“Alright.” Pam took out the folder from one of the drawers in her desk, “Do you wanna see the pictures?” She asked directly to Annie and she shook her head. “Very well, don’t worry, you don’t have to see them. I assume Andy is here for legal support.”

“Yes, Mrs. Duffy.”

“Good. So, the results from the lab said there are not traits of semen.”

“He didn’t… you know…put it in”

“You have to know that everything that is said here and happens here is private, you have the last word on what you want us to do. If you want to go against your attacker, we will follow through.”

“What if I don’t want him to go to jail?”

“My god! I cannot believe you.” Tom said with no patience.

“Tom, I told you we couldn’t force her.” Andy said.

“Look, all I want is to have my things back. Andy said we could have a restraining order, and that’s what I want. I suppose if I try to take him to jail it will take time, we will have to go to court, and even then he could be free if they bail him out. I don’t want to face him anymore!” Everything was silent when Annie stopped talking.

“I will give you an order for you to go and take your stuff, Andy can take care of the rest.”

“Honey,” Annie turn to see Andy, “I will need Daniel’s full name and his address.”

Once Annie gave the information, Andy left to the court house and to his office. He needed to have that document ready before they left to pick her things up. Given it’s a Saturday, the place was almost empty, Except for Lynn who came for a couple of hours. He hurried and passed in front of Lynn’s office and explain why he was there and that he needed her signature for the order. He kept walking to his office as he saw a figure inside.

“What are you doing here?” Andy looked at Stacy who had the picture frame he had with Jacob’s picture on his desk in her hands.

“Oh Andy! Hi! What are you doing here on a Saturday?” Stacy answered with a fake smile on her face.”

“I work here.” He said dryly “What are you doing in my office?”

“Nothing” she put the picture back to its place “How is your wife and kid?”

“They’re fine, thank you.”

“You know I’m very confused. Your wife looks very young, how old is she? 18, 19? Did she had your kid when she was 15? Sounds a bit creepy. Also, no wedding ring.”

“None of your fucking business.”

“Oh! There is no need to be rude Andy.”

“I think there is. You are talking about my kid and my family dynamic, whenever I had my kid is my problem, not yours. Now, get the fuck out of my office if you don’t want me to tell Lynn I found you sneaking and snooping here. Cuz in case you haven’t notice I don’t like you, and I’m not interested in you”

“Ouch! Who says I’m interested in you Barber?” she said with a lifted eyebrow, “I’m just working.” She fully smile “I’m going to go, have a nice weekend.”

Andy took a deep breath and sat at his desk, he will deal with Stacy later, for now he needed to finish that order.

An hour or so later, Andy had the restraining order already signed by Lynn and headed back to the police department. Annie and her brother were sitting at the entrance along with Anthony.

“Hey man!” Anthony greeted Andy. “Pam told me to go with you, in case things get messy. Do you have the order?” Andy lifted the paper. “Let’s get going then.” Anthony walked to his car and followed behind them to Auburndale. Once outside they were outside the building Annie froze.

“Honey, you don’t have to do this. We can go in, take your things and leave.”

“If you go in, he can’t get near you, I won’t allow it.” Anthony said.

They walked inside, Annie in the front, followed by Anthony, Tom and lastly Andy. They went to the 3rd floor and knock on the door with the letter C on it. It took only a few seconds for Daniel to open the door.

“Hi! Dove! I’m so glad you came back.”

Anthony step in front of Annie. “Newton police, I’m detective Mackie. We have an order to take Miss Johnson’s things, and this is for you.” He handed Daniel the restraining order, and all of them walked into the apartment.

“You put a restraining order against me? Babe I’m you boyfriend!” Daniel reached Annie’s right arm as she walked pass him.

“LET ME GO!”

“Hey man if you don’t want me to take you into custody I advise you not to touch her.”

“She is my girlfriend! You have no right to be here!”

“We do” Andy said “That’s why we gave you those papers. I’m sure you understand them.”

“Dove, it was a mistake,” Daniel ignored Andy and walked towards Annie “I’m sorry ok? We can talk, fix this. I promise it will never happen again.” Daniel grabbed Annie’s wrist.

“Alright man, I warned you.” Anthony put Daniel against the wall. “Don’t move.”

“Honey, go get your things.” Andy said with love in his voice, she nodded and Tom followed her.

“I just wanna talk to her” Daniel said trying to loose Anthony’s grip with pleading eyes.

“Well. I’m gonna level with you, man.” Andy stared at him “I don’t give a shit what you want.”

Daniel face changed, he was angry, “Did you fuck her?” Daniel asked out of the blue. Andy turned around anger going through his veins.

“What did you say?”

“Did… you… fuck…her? That pussy was made to be bury inside her for days, but you should know that by now.”

Andy push Anthony aside and grabbed Daniel by the shirt and slammed him against the wall.

“You are lucky she fucking cares for you, if it was for me I would’ve put you behind bars.”

“Andy let him go.” Anthony interfered.

“She is nothing like you, and you don’t deserve her love. From now on, you won’t get near her, you won’t touch her and you won’t even see her, or I’ll make sure you spend a good time in jail. Is that clear?” Andy said through gritted teeth.

“Andy you will get into trouble.”

“I´ll also make sure you won’t get a job any time soon, at least not in Massachusetts. So you should probably start thinking to move out of here once you graduate.” Andy let him go “And don’t worry Daniel, I will take care of her.”

30 minutes later, Annie and her brother came out of the room, she was carrying a suitcase and a backpack, while her brother had another suitcase and a duffle bag. Andy was standing by the door, and Anthony was still standing in front of Daniel.

“Do you have everything?” Andy asked her helping her with the suitcase. “Your phone?”

“Yes, it was on the nightstand.”

“Perfect, are you ready? You good?” Annie smiled and nodded.

They walked to the door and Annie turned to see her apartment and her ex once more.

“I hope you have a good life.” Daniel stared at her for a moment. “Thank you for showing me how you truly are.” And with that she closed the door and left.

They loaded Annie’s things in the truck of Andy’s car and drove back to Newton.

The three of them walked into the house to be greeted by Jacob and Annie’s friends.

“Dad!” Jacob ran towards Andy’s arms and he lifted him. “I flyed!”

“You flew?” Annie asked confused.

“What you mean you flew?” Andy said.

“Yeah! They threwed me in the air! And they catched me!!!!!”

Both Andy and Annie turned to see Sharon and Mark.

“You threw Jacob???” Annie asked them.

“We didn’t know what to do, he said we were boring!” Sharon said offended.

“You fun!” Jacob jumped off Andy’s arms and ran towards them “again!” he said putting his hands up.

“Maybe later Jake” Mark said “When your dad is not watching us preferably.”

Andy shook his head and smiled “Thank you for entertaining him.” He took off his jacket “I know he can be a bit much some times.”

They all sat down in the living room, Sharon and Mark still didn’t know exactly what had happened. When Tom sat down he let a sigh of relief, he felt exhausted, but his sister was safe.

“So, what now? Where are you going to live?” Tom said turning to her sister.

“Ammm, I haven’t thought about it. Maybe I could stay with Sharon while I look for something cheap, Or maybe I can ask if there are any dorms available on campus.”

“Karen went home for the summer, so if you want to stay with me, I’m sure she won’t mind if you use her room.” Sharon said with a smile.

“I was thinking you could stay here, honey.” Andy said and everyone turned to see him in disbelieve.

“Here?” Annie said.

“Yeah, I mean is summer break. I will need extra help with Jake, during the morning you know, and we have an extra room…” everyone kept staring at him. “What are you all looking me like that?” Sharon, Tom and Daniel smiled to each other.

“I think Mr. Barber’s idea is fantastic.” Mark said. “Is just for the summer.”

“Right! You can leave whatever you want.” Andy said.

“Ammmm” Annie looked at Sharon who was nodding at her, “Are you sure there is no problem with me staying here?”

“Of course not! You are more than welcome! Right Jake?”

“YES! And den we cun haf a fort!” Jake while trying to climb on the couch

“How can I say no to a fort?!” Annie laughed and helped Jake “I think I could stay.”

“Perfect! I will take some stuff I have in the guest room to mine. Come on Jake, help me.” Both the Barbers ran upstairs.

“Sooooo” Sharon said, “Are you telling us what happened?”

Annie told them a quick summary of the situation she went through the day before and how Andy helped her go to the hospital and to have a restraining order against Daniel. She will be lying if she said she wasn’t sad. Daniel was her boyfriend for almost 3 years, and not once she thought they will come to this.

“I’m sorry darling” Mark said “You should’ve told us to come with you.”

“I thought he wasn’t going to be there, and I didn’t want to bother you guys.”

“The important thing is you are safe, and he won’t be bothering you anymore.” Tom said and then stand, “I need to go home. Martha keeps texting me, asking for you.”

“We are leaving too, you need to rest. Try to relax for the rest of the day.”

“Thank you for coming, and to worry. I love you.” Annie hugged her friends and they left.

“Say hi to Martha and kiss Denisse for me please.” She hugged her brother.

“If you need anything, just call.”

“I will be fine.”

“I’m sure of it. He will take care of you.” Annie was confused at her brother’s statement “Ladybug, you are smart, use those pretty eyes momma gave you and see. Andy likes you.”

“He is just being nice, I’m her nanny.”

“Exactly, I have friends with nannies and none of them call them “honey”, jeez if we had a nanny I’m sure Martha will have killed me by now if I call her honey all the time.”

“He doesn’t do it all the time.”

“Sure, sure.” Tom kissed her “Be good. Love you.”

Annie waited until her brother’s car turned around the corner and then closed the door.

“Ready to see your room?”

“Sure, lead the way.”

The guest room was right in front of Jake��s room. The walls were of a light peach color, two windows to the backyard, the headboard of the bed was between the windows, two nightstands, and a lamp on the right one, a small vanity with a mirror, and to the left of the room was the closet.

“Welcome to your room!” Jake was jumping on the bed

“You will have to use the bathroom in the hall. I hope that’s not a problem.”

“No, of course not! The room is perfect.” She said while sitting and bouncing a little on the bed. “Comfy.”

“You can decor more if you want.”

“Thank you Andy” Annie walked towards him, “for everything you did last night and today.” She stood on her tip toes and kissed Andy on the check, right on top of the mole he has.

Andy close his eyes when he felt her lips on his face. “I will bring your things,” Andy took a step behind and tripped a bit “Shit, the carpet,” Annie giggled, “Be right back.”

“Your dad is funny Jake.”

“Yeah!” Jake giggled too “why?”

“No reason. Wanna play hide and seek?”

The boy nodded and let himself fall in the mattress before Annie started counting and then he ran out of the room to hide.

Another day at the Barber’s house. Andy was sitting in the living room with a cold beer in his hand, the summer breeze calming the heat on Andy’s forehead, the TV was on when the sound of footsteps made him turned around. Annie was walking towards him with a smile on her face, he loved when she smiled; he thought it was one of the most genuine smiles he had ever seen. She picked her jacket from the couch.

“Jake is sleeping” she put her jacket on, “Do you need anything else?”

“Stay” he thought, “No, I think I’m ok.”

He stood up and walked Annie to the door. They were in silence looking at each other and then to the closed door.

“Well, I should go” Annie stood on her tip toes and kissed him on the check. He could smell the fresh scent of her body spray, a scent he has grown to love.

“Stay” he said out loud this time and took her hand.

“I thought you’ll never ask”

Andy grabbed her by the waist and kissed her roughly, like if his life depended on it. He pinned her against the wall while his hands roamed all over her body.

“Wait,” Annie stopped him, “We have time, do it slowly.”

Andy took a breath and kissed her again, this time he did it slower, enjoying the feeling of her lips on his. They walked towards the couch and Andy lay on top of her. His kissed her neck and heard her moan his name, and that was enough to make him hard. Soon their clothes were scattered all over the floor. Summer was coming, the nights were getting warmer; Andy had showered and slept naked the night before. Today it was a slow Thursday at the office it was 4 and he was doing nothing, he was sitting in his office listening to music from his laptop in a low volume. He closed his eyes, stayed like that for a moment and then opened one of the drawers in his desk. He took out the folder where he had the report he made about his now nanny, he opened it and there it was the picture he stole from her Facebook page, she was looking straight to the camera and fully smiling. He smiled at the picture when Anthony and Sebastian came in, and he closed the file.

“What are you doing?” Sebastian asked.

“Why don’t you ever knock?” Andy said a bit annoyed by his friends’ attitude.

“Cuz if we knock you won’t let us in.” Sebastian said proud of his answer and smiled, “so, I will ask again, what are you doing?”

“Ammm nothing… there’s nothing to do today.” Andy was trying to hide the folder under his laptop.

“What is that?” Anthony asked, pointing to his desk.

“What?” Anthony pointed to the folder, “oh! This is nothing… new case… I was reading it.”

“What is it about?” Sebastian said.

“It is about… ammm a woman… and his ex-husband,” Andy didn’t know what to say, even though he was a lawyer he was a terrible liar. “You know… a bad divorce; and he attacked the woman.” He finished.

“Can we look?” Sebastian kept talking, “We are very bored.”

“No, this is private.”

“Come on man!” Anthony said, “It’s not like we are going to be talking about this case outside this office, let us look.”

“No, why don’t you go to your department, I’m sure Pam will give you something to do.”

“Actually, she kicked us out because we were playing hockey” Sebastian commented.

“How were you doing that?” Andy raised his brow, crossed his arms and turned to see Anthony.

“We made a ball of paper and grabbed some brooms from the closet.  And I was winning! But mister sore loser here decided it was a good idea to throw the broom up in the air, and well we broke a computer.”

Andy was paying attention to Anthony’s story when Sebastian interrupt them.

“Your client looks so much to your nanny.”

Andy turned to see Sebastian reading the file he had on Annie.

“Gimme that!” Andy tried to take the file away from Seb but he was faster.

“So, since when you use your free time to dig into your nanny’s life?”

“I told you to gimme that!”

“No, I’m Reading it.” He sat on the couch across the room, “the nanny’s name is Annabelle Marie Johnson, how cute.” Seb smiled to Andy.

“Dude, did you really make a file on your nanny???” Anthony said, “That’s…”

“Creepy” Seb finished and showed the picture that a moment before he was looking at, “She is pretty, Andy.”

“I’m not creepy,” Anthony snorted at Andy’s statement, “I wanted to know if this girl was not a psycho and if I could trust Jake to her.”

“Sure, sure,” Sebastian said. “Boyfriend, Daniel Mathews; argh sounds like a douchebag name. Criminal Justice… Maybe is he who you should be digging Andy not your nanny.”

“I’m not going to do that.”

“We can do it!” Anthony said clapping his hands. “Let’s found out, who your competition is.”

“No! She is happy with this guy, so cut it out.”

“Where did you get this picture?” Seb asked Andy.

“Her Facebook.”

“And did you send her a friend request?”

“Of course not, I made this file before I hired her, that was months ago.”

“You should totally do it now dude.” Anthony said.

“I won’t. You know what, now I totally understand why Pam kicked you out of her department.”

Andy leaned on his desk and rubbed his temples. He felt embarrassed; he snapped back to reality when he heard the click of a camera going off.

“What are you doing?” Andy asked Sebastian.

“If you are not going to date her, maybe I will.”

“Don’t you dare!”

“Why not? Sebastian smirked, “gimme a good reason, why I shouldn’t call her and ask her out?”

“Because,” Andy head was going fast, but couldn’t think of a good excuse, “because, she has a boyfriend, and she loves him.”

“That never stop me before.” Seb stood and gave Andy the file back. “You know what I think?” Seb paused for a moment, “I think you like her.”

“Well, you are wrong,” Andy lied, “We are just friends.”

“Ok then so, since you two are just friends I could give her a call.”

“Who is just friends?” Pam came into the office.

“Andy and his nanny,” Anthony said, “did you know he made a research about her?”

“Did you really?” Pam asked Andy, “I told you she was a nice girl, and to be honest I thought you were joking when you said you’ll do it.”

“Why are you all here?” the four turned to see Lynn at the door, but she wasn’t alone, another woman was with her. “Shouldn’t you be working?”

“They broke a computer.” Pam told her.

“Traitor!” Seb said.

“Look,” Lynn said annoyed, “I still don’t know how you two,” she stared at Anthony and Sebastian, “Passed the exams to become detectives, cuz you act like children. And as for the computer, you’ll pay for it, both of you, understood?”

“Yes, ma’am!” Anthony and Sebastian answered at the same time.

Both left the office to go back to their department upstairs.

“Are you really going to call that girl?” Anthony asked Sebastian once they were out Andy’s office.

“Of course not, Andy likes her.”

“I don’t think he does.” Anthony replied

“Dude use your eyes! Didn’t you see Andy’s face when he saw her on poker night? His eyes lit when he saw her.” Sebastian told him,

“He was acting kind strange a while ago.”

“Exactly and I think he needs a little push.”

“Come on man, don’t do anything. It’s Andy’s life, if he is not ready to move on you can’t force him, no matter if he likes this girl or not, is his choice, not yours.”

“Fine! I won’t do anything.”

Lynn waited till the two detectives were out of sight and looked back to Pam and Andy.

“Well, now the reason why I’m here. As you know, Mrs. Stevenson retired so let me introduce you to my new secretary, this is Stacy, she just moved here, and I hope you all make her feel welcome.”

Stacy was skinny, had black long hair, pale skin and a pointy nose.

“This is Pam Duffy, chief detective, she works upstairs with the two men that just left.” Pam smiled and Stacy bowed her head. “And this is Andy Barber. He is the ADA.”

“How you doin’?” Andy extended his hand and a flirty smile spread across her face and answered his handshake.

“I’m well, thank you.”

“So,” Lynn continue, “since you have nothing better to do Andy, would you mind give Stacy a tour, when you’re done, you can go home.”

“I better go and check on those two before they break another computer.” Pam left and leave Andy alone with Stacy.

Andy half smiled at Stacy and started walking and showing her the building from the reception up to where Pam’s department and office was.

“What brings you to Newton?” Andy Asked.

“A new start I guess, I recently divorce.”

“Sorry to heard. Amicable I hope.”

“Not quite, but it was for the best. I really hope this place allow me to have a better life.”  She said without stop staring at Andy.

Andy was not sure what it was but he didn’t like the way Stacy looked at him, nor the way her voice sounded when she talked, but again he just met her, maybe she was like that on a daily basics.

“I’m sure you will be comfortable here, everyone in Newton is very welcoming.”

“I’m sure they are.”

After they finished their little tour, Andy said goodbye to Lynn and headed to the elevator. Meanwhile Stacy saw Andy up and down while he walked away and smiled to herself, she took her phone out of her purse and dial her client’s number.

“Just meet him, the new ADA. When I have more information I’ll call you back.”

It has been 2 weeks since the “incident”, as her friends called it, happened. It was Friday, last day of school and thankfully she didn’t have exam that day, so she stayed home so she could sleep a little longer. Annie had apologized to Andy for falling asleep during working hours and told him she was extremely stressed and the lack of sleep was taking a toll on her, which was partially true, although she didn’t mention her break up with Daniel.

It was nearly 6 o’clock when Annie went out for a walk to distract herself a little of the awful week she had; she was wearing a black hoodie, a pair of black biker shorts and white sneakers, she grabbed her keys and purse and off she went. She decided to go back to the apartment to pick the rest of her clothes and things. When their friends went to pick her stuff Daniel wasn’t too nice to them and they left as soon as they could. Sharon had been borrowing her clothes but she couldn’t keep doing that to her friend. She was aware of Daniel’s schedule, so there was not a problem by going at this time of the day, especially on Friday. Annie opened the door and made sure Daniel wasn’t around and headed to the room. She took one of the suitcases she had in the closet and started to put her clothes in it as fast as she could when the front door was shut by a loud slam. By the time Annie closed her suitcase and turned around Daniel was standing by the bedroom’s door.

“Hi babe, I’m so glad you’re back.” he saw the suitcase near her feet, “What do you think you are doing?”

“I mmmm, I came to pack my things.”

“Really?” Daniel walked slowly towards her, standing just in front of her, “I called you and you didn’t answer” his finger touch her check. “You can’t leave babe… we have a future together,” Daniel was dangerously close, “remember? You are all mine.” Annie could smell a hint of alcohol in his breath.

“I am not yours,” Daniel’s eyes grew darker. “You fucked another woman! In our bed! What makes you think I’m gonna stay with you?!!”

Daniel slapped her hard and grabbed her by her arms tighten his grip as he talked.

“You are mine! And you are not leaving until we work this out!”

“Let me go!!!”

“I’ve done so much for you, and this is how you pay me?” his body pressing against her, “Don’t forget who took you after your parents died. I was the one who took care of you, and gave you a place to live.”

“You’re hurting me!”

Annie tried to let go off him, but she couldn’t he was way stronger than her, her right arm started to hurt as she tried to run away, but Daniel was faster and threw her against the wall, making her hit her head and arm. As Annie was trying to stand Daniel slapped her again, this time both her lip and cheek stung and pushed her to bed, Annie moved to the head board of the bed but Daniel grabbed her by the ankles and dragged her towards him getting on top of her to prevent her from running, he opened the hoodie she was wearing, revealing her black cotton bralette.

“Uff babe,” he hooked his finger on the bralette and lower his lips to her breast, “these,” he gave her boobs a harsh squeeze, “have always been my favorites.”

“Daniel, stop!!!” she cried and kicked trying to get Daniel off of her.

“Shut up!” he put his hand around her throat, “I’m gonna make you feel so good babe, just the way you like it.”

Daniel put his hand inside the front of her shorts, smiling and touching her roughly. The look in his eyes made her scared, he was not the man she once fell in love with. His lips connected to her chest sucking and leaving marks  as he slide two of his fingers inside of her, Annie stayed still, and felt the sting between her legs as his fingers pumped in and out of her fast, she was looking everywhere but him. She tried to let go again but it was useless, Daniel had her and he was going to get his way with her. That was until Daniel stood to open his jeans, Annie saw the opportunity to stand and get to the door of the room, throwing all she found around her to make Daniel loose his balance. Daniel reached and hold her from behind both fell to the floor and then Annie kicked him right on the face; Daniel touched his face letting her go. She stood up and grabbed the first jar she saw near her, turned and hit him on the head with it, leaving him unconscious.

Annie closed her hoodie and ran down stairs leaving Daniel and all her things behind. She walked to the closest bus stop to go to Newton and 15 minutes later she was in front of Andy’s house, all the lights were out, she walked to the entrance but didn’t knocked at the door. She went back to the downtown and walked around going nowhere. She was sure she had taken the same path for the third time when she stopped in front of a pizza place, the smell filled her nose and her stomach growled. She didn’t have money, she spend the bill she always hide on her shoe to pay the bus to Newton and she didn’t have her phone with her to call neither her friends nor brother. She was staring at the window of the place when she felt someone tackled her on the legs; she looked down she saw Jake holding her tightly.

“Hi, sweetie.” Annie hold the kid back “Where is your dad?”

“Jake! Don’t run away like that!” Andy smiled when he saw her. “Oh! Now I see why you ran. Still don’t do that, ok?”

“Yes, dad” Andy looked for a moment to Annie, she looked a little disturbed, and she had a cut on her lip and her cheek was a bit purple.

“Hey, are you ok?” Andy touched her lip, it stung and she hissed.

“Yeah,” she lied, “I… I fell.”

Annie paid attention to Andy, he wasn’t wearing a suit, he was wearing jeans, sneakers, a red hoodie and a baseball cap, and he looked a lot less strict with that outfit.

“Right,” Andy wasn’t too convinced with that answer. “What are you doing in Newton on a Friday?”

“Why not? It’s a free country” Andy raised his brows when he heard her. “Sorry… I was bored, and I decided to come here.”

“No parties?” Annie shook her head. “Very well, are you alone?”

“Yes, my friends are busy.” She lied.

Andy still wasn’t convince on her answers, she was defensive “Hmmm, well if you have nothing to do, we were about to buy something for dinner and watch a movie, wanna join us?

“Do you always watch movies on Fridays?

“Yes!” Jake told her, “Is movie night! pease, come with us.” The boy looked at her with puppy eyes which made her laughed a little.

“Alright, but I will choose the movie.”

“Deal!” Jake said “I wanf pizza, dad.”

“I think our guess should choose our dinner.”

“Pizza is fine, but without pineapple.”

“Smart choice,” Andy smiled, and opened the door of the pizza place. “After you.”

The three of them walked into the place and stood at the counter waiting their turn, a little later a young girl appear to take their order.

“We will have a large pepperoni pizza.”

“Anything else sir?” the girl batted her eyelashes to him.

“No, just the pizza.”

“Your name?”

“Andy.”

“That’s a nice name. It will be 10 bucks.”

Andy paid and the girl give him a toothy smile and left.

“She was flirting with you.” Annie said whispering.

“Who?” Annie pointed the girl who took their order, “Really?”

“Yeap, she is cute.”

“And she is probably like 16, I’m not a perv. And she is blonde, I don’t like blonde girls.” Annie froze when she heard the words blonde girl. “You look… are you sure you ok?”

“Yes, I’m fine. You know I had finals, I’m just thinking about it.”

They sat in one of the tables waiting for their pizza to be ready. Andy asked her about her exams, and she told him about how the pedagogy professor made the most difficult exam she ever had since she starter at Lasell.

“Honestly I think he just wants everybody to fail.”

“Some teachers are like that. I had one at NYU, the guy was a jerk, but he was one of the best lawyers in the city.”

“Argh, I hate that! This guy is a freaking genius, is so good at what he does, you cannot be angry at him for making difficult exams, yet you hate him, is a very confusing feeling.”

“Andy!” Annie turned to see a dark haired woman that now was kissing Andy’s cheek.

“Hi, Stacy,” Andy said not too pleased at her actions.

“What are you doing here?” Annie stared at her, it was a stupid question considering they were in a pizza place.

“We came for something to eat.”

“Oh! Right.” The girl saw Jake and Annie up and down. “I’m sorry,” a fake smile on her face, “I’m Stacy, we work together.”

“Are you a lawyer?”

“No no, I’m a secretary, but we work in the same floor. Right Andy?” She touched Andy’s arm and Annie lifted her brow at the sight of her touching him. “And I assume you are his wife?” Andy was very uncomfortable by the question, Annie could tell.

“Actually, I’m his...” She said pointing at Jake.

“Yes, she is my wife” Andy lied.

“I’m Captain America!” Jake interject.

“Yes, you are sweetie.” Annie hugged and kissed him.

“Andy!” A guy behind the counter said, “Andy!”

“That’s us, we better go.” Andy stood quickly, “See you later.”

“Bye Andy, and nice to meet you Mrs. Barber.”

Andy took the pizza, left the establishment and walked down the street to the parked car. Jake jumped to his seat, while Andy opened the door for Annie and then climbed in the car and started the engine.

“She likes you” Annie said a bit annoyed.

“Who?”

“Don’t act so innocent Andy, that Stacy girl.” She crossed her arms. “She was touching your bicep.”

“And… is that a problem?” Andy looked at her pouting, she looked hilarious.

“Well… no, I mean, if you like her, there’s not a problem.”

“She is new in town, and to be honest she is quite noisy.”

“She is beautiful”

“I don’t like her.”

“It’s fine if you do.”

“I don’t!” he laughed

“Why are you laughing?”

“I literally said you were my wife so she stop hitting on me. I’m sorry about that by the way.”

“That’s what friends are for. Right?

Andy didn’t answer. Was she jealous? He didn’t know, and despite him finding amusing how she was acting he wasn’t planning on keep arguing over a woman he wasn’t attracted to, he switch the gear to drive and went back home.

An hour had passed and Andy and Annie were still talking on the living room. Andy was a very intelligent man, he was a fan of the Red Soxs, just as Annie and her family were. They shared stories about their families going to Fenway Park and enjoyed some baseball games during the season.

“Do you really don’t like beer? Andy questioned her, after he went to grab another bottle from the fridge.

“No, sorry. Daniel also makes fun of me because of that… Have you ever arrested anyone?

“I’m a lawyer not a cop; but I could arrest you for not liking beer” Annie looked a little confused and kinda scare, Andy just laughed and touched his chest while doing so. It was the first time Annie saw him laughed like that, it was a nice laugh, infectious actually.

“I’m just joking, lawyers do that too, you know. We can’t be serious or in a bad mood all the time.” He took a sip of his beer, “In case you’re wondering, I don’t have a gun… nor handcuffs.” Andy smirked at her and she just blushed, heat going through her face, maybe it was the third glass of wine she was having.

“Where did you study law?”

“NYU”

“It was one of my options, but I couldn’t get in. At the end I choose the one closer home so my parents wouldn’t miss me that much.”

“I heard Lasell is a good school, and since you have a scholarship, I assumed you are a great student. Still, I can picture you in New York.”

“Wait, how do you know I have a scholarship?”

“Ammm, you told me the day we met.” Andy drank the rest of his beer.

“No, I didn’t.”

“Yes, you did.

“I’m sure I didn’t. How you know that?”

“If I tell you would you promise not to run away?

“…Ok”

“When Pam told me to hire you I kinda research you”

“YOU WHAT?!!!”

“I’m sorry, I wanted to see what kind of person you were, and I know it sounds creepy, but I really needed to know some stuff. Besides I could see you didn’t lie, and that made me feel certain that I could trust you with my child.”

Annie looked at Andy for a moment, and drank her wine. She couldn’t believe he would’ve done something like that, I mean he was a lawyer and work with the police so it kinda made sense, but still it was the first time something like that happened to her.

“Alright…Can I ask you some stuff?”

“What kind of stuff? Andy raised his eyebrow.

“Well apparently you know more about me than I know about you soooo, how old are you?”

“I’m 30”

“Na-ah! I thought you were older. Like 40.”

“Ouch,” Andy touched his chest acting hurt, “Don’t worry I get that a lot, it must be the beard.” He ran his right-hand through his beard, “Maybe I should shave.”

“No!” Annie answered way too quickly, “You look good like that, not all men can pull that look. It suits you.” Annie raised her hand and touched his cheek, Andy stared at her; he could smell the perfume on her wrist and feel the heat on his cheek. Annie moved her hand right away.

“I let it grow a year before I finish Law school, I thought I will look more professional. Wait here.” Andy stood up and went upstairs leaving Annie by herself in the living room. A minute later he came back with something in his hands.

“Look.”

Andy handed her an old photo album, inside there were pictures of him when he was younger.  He was shaved, and he was wearing normal clothes, jeans, t-shirts, and even cargo shorts. He looked very different to the man sitting in front of her. The guy in the pictures looked so relaxed and a lot less stressed.

“You look like a frat boy, and kind of a douchebag” Annie snorted.

“I wasn’t a douche, I hope” both smiled at each other.

“Right…” She raised her brow.

“I wasn’t, I’m always been a one woman’s man.”

“Do you ever dress like this anymore?” Annie was looking at a picture where he was wearing some green cargo shorts, an old t-shirt and a baseball cap.

“Well, I don’t wear those type of shorts anymore. I like to wear pretty much like now, sweatpants, a t-shirt, maybe a hoodie, it will be weird to be around the house on a suit 24/7. And sometimes I run or work out in the mornings, can’t wear a suit for that either.”

“You work out?”

“Yeah, in the guest room, I have some equipment there, have you not noticed?”

“I don’t snoop in your rooms Andy. I’ve just been in Jake’s room.”

“I don’t sleep with a suit either, sometimes I don’t wear anything” Annie eyed at him, Andy was completely red, “Shit, sorry, I mean… Maybe I should stop drinking, that was out of line, I’m really sorry.” He really didn’t know where that came from, he just kept talking until it was too late.

“No problem, sometimes I sleep like that too, mainly when me and Daniel… you know.” Andy swallowed hard, he blinked a couple of times while trying hard not to imagine her without clothing, he stared back at her and Annie turned her attention back to the pictures.

There were pictures of him when he was a kid, his mom was in some of those pictures; she was a beautiful woman and you could see how close they were. Annie was looking at one picture were Andy was with his mom and a birthday cake.

“She was a nurse,” Andy said out of nowhere, “we only had one another.”

“Just like you and Jake.” Annie smiled

“Hmmm I never thought about it, but yes, just like us.”

Annie kept looking at the pictures, in some of them Andy was drunk, you could notice because of his droopy eyes and flirty smile, she changed the page and there it was, a picture of Andy and the woman from the picture in Jake’s room. It was not the only picture of course, but one in particular caught her attention. They both looked young, Andy was holding her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder, and she had her hands on her little bump, barely visible, but it was there. They seemed so happy.

“Andy,” Annie paused thinking of her next question, “You said you didn’t have a wife,” Andy knew she was about to ask him about Jake’s mom, and it wasn’t a lie Annie was dying to know about the woman in the picture, but she went in a different direction. “Do you have any more family?”

“No,” Andy sighed, “my dad wasn’t around when I was a kid, and my mom died when I was about to finish Law school, cancer.”

Annie gave him a sad smile and nodded.

“Why are you telling me all of this, and showed me this?” She said lifting the photo album.

“Well, you said it, I know more about you that you about me, so is only fair for you to know some things about my life, I guess.” He didn’t seem to convince but it was so easy to talk to her.

“Thank you.” She looked at the clock, “It’s late, I should go home.”

“I can drive you.” Andy offered.

“No, you have to stay, Jake could wake up. I’ll take an Uber.”

“Are you sure? I really don’t mind.”

“I’m sure, I can text you when I get home.”

“That will be nice, thank you.”

Annie stood up and felt a little light headed and stumble, Andy grabbed her arms and stopped her from falling.

“You ok?” she looked at him with hooded eyes.

“Yeah,” Annie stare at him, his eyelashes were so long, his eyes seem bluer this close, and she could see a layer of hair on his chest to the v cut on his t-shirt, Andy’s lips were slightly open, his heart racing at the closeness of her body “It was a bad idea to drink wine,” she took a deep breath, “Happens every time, I’ll be fine.”

“I think I should drive you.”

“No, no, stay, don’t worry about me.” She said taking her phone out.

5 minutes later the Uber came and Annie left the Barber’s house. By the time she arrived to the building where she lived it was almost midnight. She called for Daniel but there was no answer, meaning he was still out with his friends, like every Friday night. She changed her clothes and laid on the bed, making herself comfortable, to finally get some sleep. She was drifting off when her phone lit up.

“Are you home?” It was Andy, she smiled.

“Yes, sorry, I forgot to let you know. I’m too sleepy”

“You didn’t sleep on the Uber, did you?”

“I closed my eyes for a bit”

“That can be dangerous, but I’m glad you made it, I can sleep now.”

“hahaha, what would have happened if I hadn’t told you I was home safe?”

“Drive all the way to your house; or I will have dark circles under my eyes tomorrow.”

“Do you really know where I live?”

“It was in my report”

“I’m fine, you can rest now.”

“Good night. ”

“Good night, Andy.”

Annie let her phone on the nightstand while she looked at the ceiling smiling like a little school girl her heart pounding a little faster against her chest; and Andy was in his bathroom smiling at the last message she had send him. He could picture Annie answering him with her cute smile and bright honey eyes. He took a deep breath and thought about what he was feeling at the moment, it could be the beer talking but those butterflies in his stomach didn’t go away, and last time he felt them was when he met Laurie back in NYU. Just the thought of Laurie made his smile fade away. Andy washed his face and went straight to bed, he looked one last time to Annie’s text and then closed his eyes.

It’s been 4 months since Annie started working with the Barbers. Her cooking was getting better, not to a chef level, but both Andy and Jake enjoyed the food she made. Although it could be because Andy only knew how to make breakfast and he always had takeout for lunch. Annie told him it was not healthy for Jake to have that much takeout at such a young age, so, now, she had to made dinner and prepare lunch for the next day. It was Friday and she and her friends will have an amazing party that night. They were walking to their cars out of campus.

“And…” Mark started, “how’s the dilf?”

“Dilf?” Annie asked looking at her friends.

“Yes, you know, a daddy I’d like to fuck… dilf” Sharon commented as if it was too obvious.

“His name is Andy.”

“Sure is, but that doesn’t mean he is not a dilf. That man is sexy as fuck! Honestly girl, how can you even hold back when he is around,” Mark said, “I would let him arrest me for being a bad boy! Grrr! yes, daddy!” Sharon and Annie laughed.

“You have a boyfriend and so do I” Annie said to Mark

“And I’m happy with my man, but he knows that just because I’m on a diet doesn’t mean I’m not gonna look at the menu. Besides, you’re gonna tell me you don’t find Andy attractive?”

He was, Annie knew he was, she wasn’t blind, and he was not only attractive on the outside, he was the whole package. “It really doesn’t matter what I think.”

“So you do,” Mark said, “Have you tried to, I don’t know, maybe flirt a little with him?”

“Would you please stop? I have Daniel, and I love him.”

“Ok” Sharon said, “let’s pretend you are not dating anyone, would you make a move?”

Annie looked at them for a moment but didn’t reply.

“Hey,” Mark said, “It’s ok to find another man attractive, is not like you are cheating on your boyfriend.”

“I like Andy, you know as… a friend.”

Sharon and Mark looked at each other, her friend seem to be struggling to say those last two words, so they started talking about the party and whose car they were gonna use, when Annie’s phone rang. The picture of Andy with Jake on his shoulders was on the screen.

“Hi, Andy!”

“Uuuuuuuuuu” Both Sharon and Mark said when she answered, and then proceeded to pretended they were kissing.

“Shut up!”, She blushed a little, “Yes, Andy?”

“Hi. I’m really sorry to do this to you, I know is your day off, but can you come and take care of Jake for a little while? I need to go to the office and some friends will be over tonight.”

“I have plans Andy.”

“Shit! I know...” he started mumbling things under his breath, “I guess I could take him to the office.”

“When do you have to be there?”

“At 5, and be back at 8 I promise. I will pay you double.”

“Fine! But you owe me, big time!”

“Thank you so much!”

She ended the call and looked at their friends.

“I have to take care of Jake. Can you pick me up there?”

“Sure honey, we’ll see you tonight.”

Annie went to her house to pick a change of clothes for the party and her make up bag. She was about to leave when Daniel arrived home early, for the first time since the semester started.

“Hi baby! Ready for tonight?”

“Shouldn’t you be at class?”

“The professor is sick, so here I am.” he looked at the bag in her hands, “Where are you going?”

“Something happened and I need to take care of Jake, I’ll see you at the party, Mark is gonna pick me up later tonight.”

“What?!” His voice a little louder than usual, “You said Fridays were off, and we haven’t spent that much time together since you started working there.” She could see how annoyed he was. “I was really hoping we could have some fun before getting ready for the party.” He approached to her and kissed her on the neck.

“I know love, but it really is an emergency, they need me,”

“He always needs you”, He let her go, Annie knew he wasn’t talking about Jake. “Where is his wife anyways?”

“I’ve told you, Jake doesn’t have a mom.”

“Of course he does, we all do.”

“You know exactly what I mean, I’m not sure what happened, but she is not around; don’t be like that,” she got closer to him.

“I don’t like him.” Again, not talking about Jake.

“You don’t even know him” Daniel was being unreasonable. “I promise I’ll make it to the party, and I’m gonna wear the dress you like.” she said winking at him.

“The black one with the low cleavage?”

“Yeap… so, are we cool? Can I go?”

“Fine…” he said not too convinced, “but Saturday and Sunday you are all mine!”

“Thanks love!”

She gave him a peck on the lips and left the apartment. Since Mark was going to pick her up, she took the bus to get to Newton. When Andy open the door and saw her his eyes lit and smiled wide at her.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” he hugged her tight.

“Not a problem, but I need to be sure you are gonna be back on time, I’m having a party tonight.”

“A party?” Andy looked at her, “I was hoping you’ll stay a little longer. Some friends are coming over and I need you to help me with Jake.”

“Andy that was not the deal! You said 8! I promise my boyfriend I was going to be at the party.”

“I’ll be back at 8 but I need you to stay, I don’t know 11… tops!”

“No! Andy, I can’t!” She crossed her arms.

“Please! Tell your boyfriend you’re gonna be a little late, besides no good party ever starts early.”

“You know sometimes I hate you, right?” she sighed defeated.

“I’m aware of that, yes.” he smiled.

“Ok, I tell Mark to pick me up later.”

Andy hugged her again and kissed on the cheek.

“You are an angel darling!”

“Yes, yes I am. Let me text Mark.”

“I thought your boyfriend’s name was Daniel.” Andy was putting his jacket on.

“It is. Mark is my friend. I’ve told you about him.”

“Oh, yes! The one who brought you when your car broke.” He took his keys.

“That’s him.”

“I’ll see you later darling”

“Darling”, it was the first time he called her that and also the first time he hugged her or kissed her. Over the past 4 months, especially after the night they hang around in his living room for a while, the two of them grew closer, they had become friends if you will, but still he was her boss. She could not deny the fact that Andy was a very attractive man, he was funny, intelligent and despite how stress he always was he was a great dad. She found herself smiling at the red closed front door until she snapped back to reality.

It was 9 o’clock and Andy wasn’t home. Annie and Jake were on the L shape couch watching Toy Story for the 5th time this month, when the doorbell rang. She went to open the door to find 2 suited men.

“Yes? Can I help you?”

“Is this Andy’s house?” a black guy asked.

“Yes, and you are?”

“We work with him, I’m Anthony” the same guy answered.

“We’re here for poker night” the dark brown-haired man commented while lifting a box of beer he was carrying. “I’m Sebastian.”

“I bet he forgot it was poker night” The black guy intervened again.

“Right… can you wait a little?”

“Sure!”

Annie closed the door and called Andy, she seriously thought he was not going to answer, but then his smooth voice filled her ears.

“Hi, Darling! I’m coming, 5 minutes.”

“There are 2 men waiting for you, a Sebastian and an Anthony? do I let them in?”

“Of course! Wait, did you leave them outside???” a hint of amusement in his voice.

“I had to check” she said and Andy laughed.

“Let them in, they’re harmless.”

She came back to the door and let them in. Jake said hello to them, and she offered them something to drink, they declined and began to prepare the table for their poker night. 10 minutes later Andy came in carrying pizza boxes. Annie was leaning on the counter watching the men fixing the table with a green table cloth, beers and plates.

“Sorry, something happened in the office.”

“Whatever… I’m taking Jake upstairs and get ready” Annie passed by him and he grabbed her by the arm.

“Hey, I’m truly sorry.” She was pissed he could tell.

“Is late Andy.”

Andy sighed and sat down with his friends. They have been working together for a couple of years now, they were detectives just as Pam, and once a month it was poker night. Usually Andy just took Jake with him but since today it was his turn to hold the game night, he thought it was better if Annie help him to get Jake to bed early.

“Did you ask Neal to come?” Andy asked his friends.

“No” Sebastian replied.

“Why not? We could use a fourth player.”

“There’s something off about him,” Seb answered, “He is too…”

“Perfect” Anthony finished the sentence.

“You barely know him, give him a chance.”

“Maybe, we’ll see.” Anthony said.

“Who is the cutie?” Sebastian asked while he drank his beer.

“My nanny… Jake’s nanny” a blush spread across his cheeks.

“Uh! The nanny! Naughty!” Anthony commented.

“Shut up! She is a nice girl, and Jakes loves her. She is very good with him.”

“Are you sure just Jake loves her?” Sebastian said.

“She has a boyfriend…”

“So we are interested!” Anthony continued.

“I’m not!”

“Look at you! Andy Barber, Newton’s ADA, drooling and blushing over his nanny!” Sebastian teased his friend.

“Can you just lower your voice? She is upstairs.”

“Come on, man!” Sebastian put a hand on his shoulder, “You can’t have a girl like that walking around the house and not make a move! Ask her out or something! You are single, live a little.”

“You are single too”

“And I have fun every weekend,” Sebastian winked at them. “What’s stopping you?”

“I just told you she has a boyfriend, and she works for me, it’s not professional.”

“You can fire her and then ask her out.” Anthony said with a smirk.

“I’m not gonna compromise my son’s happiness over a feeling.”

“Aha!” Sebastian pointed Andy with his finger. “You have feelings for her!”

“I didn’t say that! Stop putting words in my mouth! She is just my nanny and my friend, nothing more.”

It was almost 11 when Annie went downstairs ready to leave. She wore the little black dress Daniel loves so much, ironed her hair and put more make up than usual, and to complete her outfit she wore a pair of nude heels. She got a text from Mark’s phone and she walked to the dining room.

“Hey…”

The 3 men looked at her, Andy open his mouth at the sight of her, he had never seen her dress like that. She always wears jeans or leggings, and when she wears dresses or skirts, she always had thighs on. Sebastian elbowed him on the ribs and Andy closed his mouth.

“What?” Annie asked because the three men were staring at her. “Do I look bad?”

“No,” Andy stated, “You look beautiful”

“Stunning” Sebastian said smiling at her.

“Oh! well thank you. Jake is asleep, please try not to be so loud so he doesn’t wake up.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Andy said “Is Mark here?”

“Yes, he is outside.”

“I’ll walk you out.”

Andy stood and walked with Annie to the door, she looked beautiful and sexy. He watched her up and down before opening the door for her. That dress hugged her hips and butt beautifully, and the cleavage allow him to see a bit of her rounded breasts.

“Thank you for coming,” Andy paid her, “I’ll try not to use your Friday again.”

“Liar, but if you say so.” Annie looked outside to find Daniel on Mark’s car waving Mark’s phone in the air, “Hi love! Gotta go. Have fun Andy.”

“You too, drive safe!”

He watched how Annie almost ran to the man waiting for her on the side of the car, it was then when Andy saw her kissing him and playing with his hair a little. He sighed at the picture, closed the door and felt how his heart broke a little, wishing it was him who she was kissing and not Daniel.

THE NANNY: CHAPTER 3

Pairing: Andy Barber x Annie Johnson (OFC)

Summary: Working and single parenting is not easy. Andy needs to find a nanny for his son Jacob. Annie, an education degree student at Lasell University, comes to their lives just in time for the big changes in Andy’s life.

After the first couple of weeks, Jake and Annie became closer, and Andy was more stressed as days passed by. He came home, had dinner, kissed his son goodnight and locked himself in his office. Annie’s schedule was never due at 7, she always had to stay longer and that started to bother Daniel, who didn’t like the idea of his girlfriend being in the house of a single man at night.

It was a Wednesday and Andy came back home early, but as soon as he got in, he went to his office and kept working. Annie and Jake were playing to be pirates on the living room, it didn’t take long for Andy to come out of his office.

“Hey! I’m trying to work here! Keep it down!” and then he slammed the door.

“Daddy is apset.”

“Daddy is stressed, wanna help me to make dinner?”

An hour later dinner was ready, Annie sat Jake around the table, and served his and Andy’s plate. She made chicken with roasted potatoes and a side salad. She walked to the lion’s cage, knocked at the door, and slightly opened it.

“Hi… dinner is ready. Jake is already waiting for you.”

“I’m busy. I’ll have dinner later.”

Andy was surrounded by a bunch of files and his laptop was on in front of him.

“But, your son…”

“I just told you I’m busy! You have dinner with him.”

Annie closed the door and went back to the dining room where Jake was playing with his food. She sat down in Andy’s place.

“Don’t do that sweetie.”

“Is daddy not eating with me?”

“He is busy, but he said I could eat with you.”

The boy lowered his head and then nodded. After they finished their dinner, Annie send Jake to his room and she cleaned the kitchen. It was almost 9 and as it was to be expected her phone didn’t stop ringing, it was Daniel.

“Where the fuck are you???” One more text, “have you seen the time?” another one, “answer me!”

“Still working” was her only reply.

Once she finished cleaning, she went upstairs to tugged Jake in, but her heart broke when he saw the little boy crying on his pillow.

“Hey, what’s wrong sweetie?” she took him in her arms.

“Daddy… is…busy… and angy… cuz…and… he… mad… me!!! Jake said between sobs.

“shhh, shhh, he is not mad at you, he just has a lot of work to do, this has nothing to do with you. He loves you very much”

“I want him to play with me!”

“I know, I know, but he is working right now. I’m sure you two would play on the weekend, and go for ice cream, and watch a movie, what else would you like to do?”

“I wanna play pawrates with him.”

“Perfect, we can add that to the list. But if we wanna do that, first we have to stop crying, and go to bed cuz is late.”

Jake cleaned his face and make himself comfortable on his bed; 5 minutes later he was fast asleep but Annie was boiling inside. She went downstairs and opened Andy’s office unannounced. Andy looked at her with wide eyes while he held his phone against his ear.

“What’s your problem?! No, not you Neal, I’ll call you back.” He hung up the phone.

“You really wanna know?! Your son went to bed crying! Because you are too fucking busy to have dinner with him!!!!” Annie took a breath. “And I’m sorry, I know this is your job, but as far as I know you made a promise, to always have dinner and play with him a little before going to bed. Does that mean nothing to you?!!!”

“Hey! I won’t allow you to talk to me like that! WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THING YOU ARE?! His voice was getting louder by the minute. “OF COURSE IT MEANS SOMETHING! YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT MY SON! HE IS THE REASON I ACCEPTED THIS JOB!

“Well, then prove it! Leave your work for later when you come back home! He needs you!”

Annie turned around and went to the leaving room to pick her things up.

“COME BACK HERE! WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!”

“I’m going home, look at the time, I should’ve been out of here almost 2 hours ago, my boyfriend won’t stop texting, and I stayed because I didn’t want to leave Jake with his so-called father, cuz I knew you were not going to pay attention to him.”

“YOU ARE FIRED!”

Annie went out of the house and ran to her car, leaving the Barber’s house behind. Andy stood in the living room running his hands through his hair. The case he was working on was getting the best out of him, and even though he wanted to spend time with Jake and go to bed early, he couldn’t. He had to prove everyone he could manage to be the ADA, otherwise he will be fired. Andy climbed the stairs to his son’s room, the boy was slightly snoring when he came in, he could see the fainted pink color on his cheeks and his puffy eyes, and it wasn’t long before he started crying at the sight of his son. He felt miserable.

Once Annie came back home, he found herself with a very pissed Daniel, he was sitting on the living room watching the news.

“It was about damn time.” He said without looking at her.

“I’m sorry, is just that I was very busy. Dinner took a little longer cuz Andy…”

“Andy?” he turned to see her, “I think Mister Barber is more adequate considering he is your boss.”

“He asked me to call him like that.” She answered shyly.

“I’m sure he did,” Daniel stood in front of her, “What else did he ask you to do?”

“Nothing, I swear,” She could see the anger in his eyes, “Why are you acting like this? Are you jealous or something?” Daniel laughed at her question.

“I’m sure I have nothing to be jealous about, right?”

“Of course not baby, He is just my boss, he had things to do and asked me to stay a little longer, no biggie.”

“Well I just hope he pays you for the extra hours.”

Annie stayed in silence, she rushed out of the house, she didn’t even think about the payment of the week, not about a payment for extra hours; the extra time was never discussed by any of them.

“I…” Daniel stared at her with a harsh look, “yeah, of course he will.”

“Dinner is cold, if you are hungry heat it yourself.” And with that he left the living room.

Maybe it was not a good time to bring up the fact she was now unemployed because she yelled to her boss.

 It was more than obvious that Annie didn’t show up the next day to take care of Jake and Andy had to take the child with him to the office, which was a complete disaster, Jake was annoyed by everything, mainly cuz his dad couldn’t play with him in office hours. Andy gave Jake a couple of paper sheets, pens and markers. He had done at least 10 drawings and pasted them all over Andy’s office, but that wasn’t enough to entertain him.

“Hey Andy, may I come in?” Neal was standing at the door with some files on his hands.

Neal was Andy’s “replacement”, he started working in Newton a year ago and now he was in charge of some of the cases Andy was working on before he was promoted, so in a way Andy still had to help him. Neal was eager to learn and please anyone, he was a couple of years younger than Andy so he couldn’t blame him, cuz he was the same way when he started.

“Sure, what’s wrong?”

“Ok, so the case of Mr. Bronson, it says here they found out new information…”

“I wanna go home!” Jake yelled.

“Jake, I’m working, I told you; you have to be quiet.” He turned his gaze towards Neal, “I’m sorry, you were saying?”

“The evidence is not complete, you wrote some notes here, about the witnesses, but the information is not complete.”

“I wanna play wif Annie!” Jake kicked Andy’s chair.

“Well, she is not here, so cut it out!” Andy snapped at Jake who only crossed his arms and pouted. “Do you have kids?” Andy asked Neal.

“No, I’m not even married.”

“Good, keep it that way a little longer.” Neal smiled at him and shook his head. “That information is in the file room 2, under the name of the witness I wrote there.”

“Thanks, man.” Neal stood “Bye, Jake. I like your drawings.”

“Fanks!” The boy waved and smiled to Neal.

Andy threw his head back and took a deep breath.

“I wanna go home.” Jake said quietly this time.

“Jake, you said you’ll behave, this is not behaving.” Jake crossed his arms again “Stop pouting, or there won’t be movie night tomorrow.”

“Andy? Can you come to my office?” Lynn, Andy’s boss, stood at Andy’s door with her arms crossed.

“Sure. Jake stay here, don’t touch anything.” Andy said to the boy who was pouting in a chair next to him.

Andy passed in front of his old desk, now Neal’s and Mrs. Stevenson’s desk, gave Neal a scary grimace, and Neal laughed at him, came into Lynn’s office and sat in front of her.

“Andy, I care about you, and I love Jake but he can’t be here.”

“I know, I had a situation.”

“Who’s Annie? Your son won’t stop talking about her. Are you dating someone?

“No, is her nanny. Pam thought it was a good idea to get help, Jake loves her.”

“If he has a nanny, why is he here?”

“Cuz I fired her last night” Andy sighed “She said some things I wasn’t particular thrill about, so I fired her.”

“What did she say?”

Andy told her about the argument they had the night before, just for Lynn to look at him with severe expression.

“Look you don’t have to prove anything. If I gave this job is because you deserved it, and because I knew you were good at it. If this means you are compromising your relationship with your son then yes, I could fire you. Your nanny is right, I know we sometimes have to keep working at home, but do that on your own time, don’t use your son’s. Go home Andy, spend the whole afternoon with your kid. And I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Andy came out of the office and took Jake to the park and to have ice cream. The boy was excited to be playing with him after all the work his dad had on his shoulders. They were sitting on a bench eating their ice cream.

“Jake, we need to talk buddy. I want to apologize for not spending time with you. I had to do some things about work and…”

“Striss” the boy smiled at him with his face covered in chocolate “Annie telled me.”

“Did she? What else did she tell you?”

“Dat you love me.” He was focused on the melting ice cream on his hands. “She always say dat.” He licked a bit of the chocolate in his small hands, “love you too daddy.”

“Really? How much does Jake love dad?”

“Too much!!!!” the boy said joyfully, hugged Andy and kissed him on the cheek, leaving small stains of chocolate over his shirt and face, “Can we buy Annie ice cream?”

“Sure. But you know, what if I’ll call her and maybe we can get more ice cream tomorrow.”

“Pizza!”

“Hehehe, pizza then. Let’s go home.”

Jake nodded and smiled at his dad, and Andy was only thinking how to apologize to Annie and make her come back, he needed her.
