Reading....

Fate, as in a gift from a friend, brought this book into my hands. Because of the cover I wouldn’t have given it more than a glance in a book shop, I doubt I would have picked it up to read the blurb, what a big mistake. The rule - You Should Never Judge a Book By It’s Cover, is very true! Why do I ignore it so often. I now have a new author that I want to read, and read everything they’ve written. 

My Review:

I found the writing of Chris Cleave moving and unforgettable! He writes with a rare skill that allowed me to easily empathise with his characters, laugh with them, marvel at their courage and fear for their safety all at the same time. I found their story compulsive reading and there's one passage in the second half of the book that I found so perfectly written, so emotionally charged, I doubt a well directed movie could have added any more suspense to the moment, I had to put the book down and walk away! The historical setting is London during the Blitz and the island of Malta during a two year siege that saw it nearly bombed out of existence. As beautiful as Cleave's writing is, at times he pulled me up, unable to continue reading, with his descriptions of the violence that happened during the war, but here too, his skill as a writer caught me unawares. It was like riding my pushbike around a corner only to discover a huge pothole that I hadn't a hope of missing, leaving me dumped, shaken and a little bruised. As I've said, a rare skill from this author who took my emotions firmly in his hands and ran with them.

  O que te motivou a ler o livro?

A única coisa que me motivou a ler esse livro foi a sinopse. Acho que foi a sinopse que mais me deixou curiosa na vida.

  O que você está achando do livro até agora?

Até agora estou gostando bastante, única coisa que me incomoda um pouco é o fato dos capítulos serem bem longos. Gosto muito de ler no ônibus então o trecho que faço de casa até trabalho mal dá para ler um capítulo completo. O fato deles serem grandes também impedem que eu faça aquele “só mais um capítulo” antes de dormir, porque, com certeza, antes de terminar o capítulo já vou ter caído no sono.​

Everyone Brave Is Forgiven by Chris Cleave

I had read Chris Cleave before, his book called The Other Hand, more commonly known as Little Bee. I then heard about his new book coming out and that it was available from Net Galley. I'd never tried Net Galley before and thought it worth a go. I give both Net Galley and Chris Cleave five stars. My mini review I wrote at the time of reading the book, before I started this blog, was: Although at times harrowing, I love this book; one cares about the characters and one cringes at their mistakes. It only didn't get five stars as for me, the last six or seven pages just "missed", but that's me being very pernickety. Loved it.

I’ve had Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave on the shelf for a long time so when Kelli @amillionpages talked about a buddy read I was in. This is historical fiction that takes place in the early days of WW ll in London. The air raids, the rationing, the starvation, friends dying and the duty people are expected to have during war. This was a tough book emotionally but Cleave does a great job showing us the tremendous English spirit in a time of desperation. I did the audiobook and there’s a scene where the children left behind from the evacuation, the broken and damaged, are doing a Christmas play - I almost had to pull the car over. So much emotion in this story.
