For years now I have been enjoying trips to Stoney Ridge through the pages of Suzanne Woods Fisher's books. It's always nice to catch up with the characters and get introduced to new members. While this is an Amish community and I'm not Amish there are so many ways that I can relate to this group of people.

Ms. Fisher does a marvelous job of reminding us that even though we live a bit differently we still have a lot in common. Being Amish doesn't keep you from sorrow or strife. But it also doesn't keep you from experiencing joy and harmony.

In Two Steps Forward the subjects of abandoned newborns and late term abortion are addressed. In the Amish community children are looked at as a blessing from the Lord so these two issues concern them greatly. I was impressed with their thoughts on making a difference, even if it only had the potential of making a small difference.

The novel introduced a couple of new characters but it was full of the old ones that we have come to know. Edith Fisher Lapp is still a cranky pants but this time around we get to see a bit of backstory and softening of character. Her husband Hank Lapp continues to make me laugh. Edith's son Jimmy Fisher is back, hat in hand and I enjoyed watching him come full circle. The book is centered on his character along with the widow Sylvie Schrock King.

One of the best things about this book and series is that it is very versatile. It can be read as either part of the series or as a stand alone. If you want my recommendation I would say to go all the way back to the first book in the first series, The Choice. You'll enjoy the development of the characters and the ebb and flow of the Amish life. Don't want to go that far back? Just start with this book. You'll get enough background as you go along to know what has happened before you joined the group.

As much as Dean hated you for decorating the bunker with a Christmas tree and lights, he came to appreciate it especially seeing how mesmerized his best friend is after landing in the bunker. Castiel looks around the bunker with wide eyes as if he has never seen Christmas lights before.

“You okay there bud?” Dean asked him as he pops open a beer and leans against the table watching Castiel curiously look at the bulbs.

“Are these protective wards?” Castiel asked in his deep gruff voice as his brows furrow in concentration. Dean almost chokes on his beer as he doubles over in laughter before you walk over to smack him in the back of his head. Dean quickly shoots up to scowl at you before rubbing the back of his head while grumbling to himself. You walk over to Cas with a smile and look at your work with a proud smile.

“You never celebrated Christmas Cas?”

Cas shakes his head at you before looking at the lights again.

“We don’t celebrate such things in heaven,” Cas said softly before you grab his hands and turn to face Dean. You didn’t notice the redness that crept up Cas’s face, but Dean noticed and smirked as he took another swig of his beer.

“Do you want to come ice skating with us,” you asked Dean. The taller man shook his head as he walks around the table to sit down.

“Nah, doesn’t sound like it’ll be for me,” Dean answered as Sam walked into the room freshly showered after a nap. The tallest man looked around the place with a smile and gives you a look of approval. Cas stood stiffly beside you as your fingers are still entwined in his. The nervous look on Cas’s face was something Sam noticed, and he smiles as you’re still oblivious of Cas’s feelings.

“Come on, there’s so much you need to learn.” You drag him out of the bunker before hearing a burst of laughter from the bunker before closing the door. You rolled your eyes at Dean idiocy, before pulling the Impala’s keys out of your pocket with a mischievous smile.

“Oh no, we have to return that to Dean immediately. He won’t appreciate us taking his baby,” Cas said almost instantly. You pouted at him before leaning back against the Impala.

“Come on Cas, I want to show you so many things, and I want to hang out with you. I haven’t seen you forever, and Dean won’t even notice that it’s gone for a few hours,” you said with the biggest puppy dog eyes you can manage. Little did you know that Cas would do anything for you even if it meant taking something as important as Dean’s car without his permission. With a sigh, Cas walks over to the driver side and opens the car door for you. You jump up and give him a hug before hopping inside with Cas following you in from the passenger seat.

The drive didn’t take long as you both reach a fairly crowded mall with a large skating rink in the middle of it. A giant snowman skate around the rink being playful with the other skaters, and Cas looks at you to see your eyes shine brightly at the sight. He smiles and follows after you as you make your way to the booth to grab you both a pair of skates.

“I don’t know if I can do this,” Cas said with uncertainty. You grab him by the shoulders and look him deep in the eyes while a shade of red once again creeps onto Cas’s face.

“You got this. Just hold on to me and you’ll be fine. I promise.”

Cas nods his head and holds your hand as you both waddle to the rink. You effortlessly step onto the ice and hold onto the rail as you patiently wait for Cas to step on as well.

“You can do this. Just look at me,” you said with a small smile. He stares at you and took a deep breath before stepping onto the rink and tightly holds onto your shoulders while finding his balance. You couldn’t help but giggle when Cas almost slips, but you held it back and notice how embarrassed he was getting.

You grab his hand and you feel him slightly relax as you two go at a steady pace around the rink as the snowman glides around everyone doing silly dances and playfully wags around a candy cane in his hands. You turn your head to see him staring at you, and you tilt your head at him.

“What is it?”

He shook his head and kept skating trying to keep his balance while tightly holding onto your hand as if it was his lifeline. The snowman quickly skates directly in front of you while facing both you and Cas. You see him hold up a mistletoe and Cas confusingly look at you and back at the snowman.

“What is he doing?” You feel a blush coming up now as you explain to him the meaning behind the mistletoe. It was the first time you noticed how red Cas turned before you stop the skating and he holds onto both of your hands to keep himself steady. You lean up and give him a kiss before feeling Cas freeze up. You were about to pull away before feeling him returning the kiss.

You pull away smiling, and you both turn your heads to see the snowman comically holding his hand in front of his mouth. You look around to the entire rink clapping and cheering you both on before giving Cas another peck.

“I’m starting to understand and like Christmas a lot more now,” Cas said with a smile.

The Christmas season just wouldn't seem complete without reading a Christmas novella from Melody Carlson. This year's offering is an historical romance set during WWII. The story is one that happened all too often during that time.

Amelia is working at the USO when she meets Navy pilot James and quickly falls in love. The two plan to marry but before they can go to the Justice of the Peace James has to ship out. Soon after James is MIA and presumed dead. And if things couldn't get worse Amelia discovers she's pregnant.

When the story begins we find Amelia struggling to provide for her and little Jimmy. She's a beautician but having a tiny baby isn't the easiest thing to juggle along with working. She's decided to head to Montana to possibly meet James' family and perhaps make a fresh start.

Poor Amelia sustains blow after blow until she ultimately can't stand back up again. She has agonizing decisions to make that force her to set aside her hopes and dreams and choose a selfless path.

As with all of Melody's stories this one tugged at the heartstrings and wound up being a lovely ending. (You can't have an awful ending for a Christmas story!) I'm once again impressed with her ability to pack so much into a small story without it feeling rushed. If you are a lover of Christmas stories treat yourself to this one. It would also make a wonderful little Christmas gift for someone that needs a little lift this time of year.
