Betty Wright: A Legendary Soul Singer Died at the Age of 66

When Betty Wright was just 17, she had her first hit, "Clean Up Woman," and became a central player in the Miami funk sound of the 1970s.  

Betty Wright, a strong singer who had a breakthrough hit single when she was 17, went on to be a key player in the 1970s Miami funk sound, and worked closely with music stars over the next four decades, dying at her home in Miami on Sunday. She was 66. Her death was confirmed by S-Curve Records' Steve Greenberg, who said Ms. Wright had been diagnosed with cancer in the fall, and had received chemotherapy. “She was an incredible writer, producer and mentor to young artists,” Mr. Greenberg said. “It’s an incredible loss.” Ms. Wright's 1971 single, "Clean Up Woman," reflected the turn of funk music into a disco, and her syncopated, soulful sound created a prototype that for the remainder of the decade enjoyed great chart success. "Clean Up Woman" peaked on the single chart to No. 6. While she never reached the mainstream success again, Ms. Wright remained a staple of the Billboard R&B chart and put 20 separate singles in the R&B Top 40, as a lead singer, duet partner or influential background vocalist. She was on the R&B and dance charts as recently as 2007 with "Baby," a duet with next generation soul singer Angie Stone.

"She is what is uperbly rhythmic vocalist who pushes against the beat and negotiates with ease the tricky rhythmic crosscurrents of the music," wrote Robert Palmer, reviewing a live show for The New York Times in 1977. "Her gospel melismata is used in a conservative, musical manner, not as mannerisms or tics." In 2011, Ms. Wright joined up with the Philadelphia hip-hop collective the Roots for an album entitled "Betty Wright: The Movie," which featured Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne guest appearances. “Betty Wright can lay greater claim to being the voice of ‘every woman’ than, say, Chaka or Aretha,” Nick Coleman wrote, reviewing the album for The Independent in the U.K. James Reed in The Boston Globe called it “smart, probing R&B for grown-ups,” and an extension of “the fierce, funky sound that made Wright so irresistible in the 1970s.” Ms. Wright's career as a songwriter, arranger, and producer has been lasting. Her credit list includes, among others, Stevie Wonder, Stephen Stills, David Byrne, Alice Cooper, Jennifer Lopez, Erykah Badu, Bob Marley, Gloria Estefan, Miami Sound Machine, Keyshia Cole, P. Diddy, Kelly Clarkson, Nas. Betty Wright was known as an adviser to a new generation of soul artists, helping the British singer Joss Stone produce albums, carrying on a mentoring legacy that began in the early days of her career. She helped George and Gwen McCrae sign to Alston Records as a teen; she supported Peter Brown in the late 1970s and sang backed vocals on his "Dance With Me" single. Bessie Regina Norris, the youngest of seven daughters, was born in Miami on 21 Dec. 1953. When she was 2, she started singing professionally in the Echoes of Joy a gospel group formed by her siblings. Dick Clark interviewed Ms. Wright on "American Bandstand" in 1978, and when he asked if she was a "church singer," she responded, "Absolutely.
