#chuuya the fan favorite bungo stray dogs character WHO

just reread storm bringer and cried all my tears. my heart breaks for my lovely boy chuuya. he didn't deserve everything that happened to him. i wanna hug him tightly. it hurts to even think about it.
and listen i understand why some people hate dazai after this novel, but my opinion hasn't changed because i never idealized him. what dazai did to chuya is just disgusting. dazai was a killer, thinking in cold blood, working for the mafia. it's been known since season 2. this case was no exception, osamu prioritized protecting mori and the port mafia, he was doing his job. so why storm bringer is so surprising for a lot of people... i don't understand. dazai was a terrible person in the past, but he really changed after joining the agency. almost all the characters bungo stray (gay) dogs are not exclusively positive and perfect, they are all gray, with their own traumas and mistakes. that's why i love this manga/anime sm. i don't condone dazai and his actions, but I still love him immensely. in general, I don't like people who idealize dazai because he's not like that, and it’s ok, but I don't like people who trash dazai and his fans even more. they look through the characters and divide the world into black and white.
what about chuuya... he means the world to me, and i'm just happy that he is who he is, strong enough to be able to survive such traumatic events. i'm proud of him, so insanely proud. no regrets at all that it was chuya who became my favorite bungo stray dogs character.
and yeah - i will always love soukoku even if they had that fucking dark age.

Finished all the anime eps so far so here goes.
Kunikida is a man of ideals - a quality that he wastes no time asserting once he takes center stage as early as Season 1. He strives to live a life of virtue and has planned out every step of it in his notebook, from his dreams and aspirations to his love life and even just his daily schedule. It's a rigid structure to live, but one which Kunikida views as a guiding light to not only live his best life but to live in a way that benefits society and upholds justice.
So, naturally, this detail-oriented man with a diligent work ethic finds his sense of equilibrium frequently shaken by the eclectic oddballs comprising his friends and co-workers. Resultingly, he's not quite as stoic of a leader as Fukuzawa. For all his composure, he is prone to bursts of comical anger, most often directed at Dazai, whose mischievousness and carefree attitude are his antithesis.
It's no secret why Dazai is such a beloved character and the mesmeric core of the story. He's on the side of good, but his past and layered personality suggest a dark side that makes him extremely compelling. People love bad boys, but it's worth noting just how pivotal Kunikida is in making Dazai such an effective character. If there wasn't a straight-laced "good cop" bouncing off of Dazai's witty jabs, the banter wouldn't have the same charm.
In the pre-Chuuya Nakahara era of Bungo Stray Dogs, Kunikida was the perfect foil to Dazai, hence their being partnered up at various points in Season 1. Episodes 6 and 7 were adapted from the very first Bungo light novel, a story which originally was set two years before the series began. Instead, the anime places this story after Atsushi has joined, which works just as well and, in fact, significantly benefits Kunikida's character.
It's not difficult to see why Kunikida might slip under the radar for some fans when considering favorites among the cast. He's a Lawful Good character and the trouble with them is that they can be received as boring because they play by the rules and audiences like characters who break rules. After all, sometimes the audience wants to break the rules themselves, so it's cathartic, while also yielding a flawed protagonist that might be more relatable.
These are generalizations, of course, but one doesn't have to hate Kunikida or the Lawful Good archetype to demonstrate indifference based on such surface-level qualities. And make no mistake, it's only the surface-level qualities that set Kunikida even remotely apart from a large cast known for consistently bold introductions. If Kunikida is overlooked compared to the rest of them, then it stands to reason that he's lacking a certain something.
Finding out what is a conundrum because what makes a character someone's favorite can be anything from the biggest plot points to the most subtle moments. Ranpo's backstory in Season 4 made an already great character even better, same with Yosano that same season. All it takes is a single good episode to become obsessed with someone who, up until that point, might have been just another character. Lucky for Kunikida, he got two early on.
The Azure Messenger story is very much the defining tale of his character; one that challenges the ideals that define him, through the return of an old case that's come back to haunt him. It's a story that ends in tragedy and which leaves him furious and frustrated. Next to Season 2's Dark Era arc, it's one of the first dramatic moments where Bungo gets serious in a way that demands pause. Yet, despite not reaching a favorable conclusion, Kunikida stands firm.
Another thing that - again, on a surface level - can be frustrating about Lawful Good characters is how their conflicts can be rooted in their innate goodness. Thus, the villains, human nature, or even the universe at large, endeavor to tarnish it and "break" the hero. A less charitable interpretation of such a character might conclude that they lack a substantial flaw.
The trouble with this conclusion is that it sort of eschews the point of a character arc. If a more relatable, flawed character is compelling, it's because they are challenged to confront said flaws, either fixing them or giving in. In the same way, an idealistic character is useful because their conflicts challenge their propensity to be the kind of person that the audience should hypothetically strive to be.
Kunikida is a compelling character because he represents how hard it is to live up to ideals, and the importance of striving to despite the impossibility of never faltering. And it isn't a conclusion that he comes to without a struggle. The best part of the Azure Messenger case is how it affects him throughout the rest of the season. Despite his assertions, Kunikida becomes more jaded, which leads him to discourage Atsushi from trying to save Kyouka.
But Atsushi doesn't give up, and Kunikida noticeably has some of that faith in his ideals restored. One of the best creative choices the anime made was adapting the first light novel as they did. It allowed the climax of Season 1 to be even more impactful by giving Kunikida a complete arc, the drama of which would be echoed in future seasons.
Truth be told, the most pressing reason why Kunikida has faded from the discourse is his seeming lack of relevance since Season 3. Between the underrated Episode 25 and the Cannibalism arc, Kunikida cements his place as a leader. However, the death he witnesses in that same arc is a harrowing event that has yet to truly take hold and push his story forward.
There have been suggestions of an inner conflict, like in Kunikida's scenes with Jouno of the Hunting Dogs, but as of the end of Season 5, they haven't amounted to much. With any luck, Bungo Stray Dogs' next arc will have something exciting in store for him, because it would truly be a tragedy not to see this man's search for ideals end prematurely. Although I feel a lot of this is remedied once I read through the manga along with the light novels.

fandom: bsd; ship: stsg; character: gojo bc you said you are already in your feels about him so this is your invitation to get even more feely. :)
oh hell yeah
001 | Send me a fandom and I will tell you my: [Bungo Stray Dogs]
Favorite character: *sigh* Dazai (tho Chuuya is overtaking him after I read Stormbringer)
Least Favorite character: Mori
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Soukoku OBVS, Poe/Ranpo, Dazai/Kunikida, Atsushi/Akutagawa, Atsushi/Montgomery
Character I find most attractive: Odasaku
Character I would marry: also Oda
Character I would be best friends with: Poe, i love that funky lad
a random thought: i would like to see more Gin
An unpopular opinion: im not like. entrenched in the fandom enough to to know if its an unpopular opinion but i don't think dazai and akutagawa should have like, a reconciliation. i think akutagawa should learn to live without dazai's approval bc as much as i love my scrungly man he was SO shitty to him
My Canon OTP: i mean are there really any explicitly CANON? stan soukoku for good health
My Non-canon OTP: Poe/Ranpo, ik they are pals/rivals in canon but i think they should kiss
Most Badass Character: CHUUYA
Most Epic Villain: Dostoyevsky probably? he's so fucking crafty i hate him
Pairing I am not a fan of: romantic Dazai/Odasaku
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): i don't know that i really have an opinion of this?
Favourite Friendship: hmmmmmmmmm Atsushi and Kyouka
Character I most identify with: Ranpo, i think
Character I wish I could be: god they are all going through so much i do not want to be them
--
002 | Send me a ship and I will tell you: [Satosugu]
When I started shipping them: shortly after reading Vol 0
My thoughts: I sent Scout 23 messages about them this morning before she woke up you don't want me to pop off here. In short, i think they have a really fascinating dynamic and the shift in their relationship breaks my heart. I am always thinking about their shift from being the only ones they have TOGETHER (we're the strongest) to being the only ones they have ALONE (i'm the strongest). I think the shift from geto being his moral compass to going off the deep end is just so interesting to think about and also lord help me even 10 years later they arent over their breakup they are in love.
What makes me happy about them: I love thinking about their time in school together and the small moments they would have had together, i love the idea of two incredibly powerful characters trusting each other despite their differences and the fact that they GENUINELY are the only ones who knew the other? wow.
What makes me sad about them: God, everything. How if Satoru had been a little less emotionally closed off and really talked to Suguru about whats wrong we could have had it all, but also Suguru wasn't being open either.
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: acting like Gojo was the only one in the relationship that was bad about being in a relationship. they were both not good at talking about their feelings
Things I look for in fanfic: Angst angst angst; gentle touches and just. lingering on them being physically affectionate; them being little shits to each other but also its flirtatious
My wishlist: oh i want to see some deeply angst shit when Gojo gets out of the box and sees Kenny. Whether its him seeing Yuta having killed Geto so he doesnt have to again or if he has to kill him a second time- i just want Gojo to cry about his dead boyfriend.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Akutami has literally said Gojo isn't likely to be faithful to a single woman so i truly don't know that he could have a partner in the end? I think him ending up simply as a teacher surrounded by students who care about him is his best possible ending. And Geto is well. I don't think he's ending up with anyone.
My happily ever after for them: Ok i KNOW he's not gonna come back but i have a small little glimmer of hope and in the fix-it fic in my brain they make it out of all this shit together and go resolve their trauma far away from everything. The most likely ending i feel like is. Gojo being buried near Geto or being with him after death.
--
003 | Give me a character & I will tell you: [Satoru Gojo]
How I feel about this character: I once again point to the 23 messages i sent to scout before she woke up.
ANYWAY Gojo is the loneliest person in all of jjk welcome to my tedtalk. I think he is such an interesting character that gets reduced to jokes by a lot of the fandom (and yes i am guilty of making jokes about him too because he is fun to slander) but in reality he has been through so much and he is untouchable by the way their society works and literally untouchable by pretty much everything and despite how much he cares he can't get too attached because he's seen firsthand what their world is like and he wants to change it. He literally had one person he trusted and they left him and its any wonder he distances himself from others? I think he genuinely cares but is so emotionally closed off because of his upbringing and the expectations the world has on him but it is so clear that despite the fact that he is trying to get his students to be. More than him so they can change the system, he also wants them to have what he didn't.
Lighter note: Gojo is a Swiftie, pass it on
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: He said it himself. His one and only. You don't break up with someone outside KFC and then still think about them 10 years later.
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Him and Megumi as the "father"/son dynamic.
My unpopular opinion about this character: Fandom reduces him far too much to being a bad guardian to Megumi and just in general a menace to society but i firmly believe that he did the best he could with Megumi (he was a teenager taking care of a kid who gave 0 shits about him like it wasn't going to be perfect) and that he really does love him as a son, and also like, he is so much more than being a silly goofy guy and I just think fanon interpretation and jokes has taken it too far.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I've been very big into the left eye theory lately, but i also really really just want some juicy Came Back Wrong when he gets out of that box. There's no way that physical separation is helping his general isolation and loneliness and im so ready for him to be feral when he's released. Also I would like him to cry soon. Pls and thank you.
Favorite friendship for this character: The trio of him and Shoko and Suguru is so good. Also him and Nanami, despite their obvious friction points
My crossover ship: I don't think I really have one? I'm not super into crossovers haha

My Top Ten Favorite Anime Side Characters
To start with, I'm not a huge main character fan. Honestly, I think there is only two main characters that are actually my favorite character in that anime. But anyways, I'll start from the bottom and work my way up:
Number 10: Tetsurou Kuroo from Haikyu!!
Tumblr media
Number 9: Feitan from Hunter X Hunter
Tumblr media
Number 8: Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan
Tumblr media
Number 7: Kei Tachikawa from World Trigger
Tumblr media
Number 6: Benimaru from Tensura
Tumblr media
Number 5: Shanks from One Piece
Tumblr media
Number 4: Crowley Eusford from Seraph of the End
Tumblr media
Number 3: Tyki Mikk from D. Gray-man
Tumblr media
Number 2: Chuuya Nakahara from Bungo Stray Dogs
Tumblr media
Number 1: Law Trafalgar from One Piece
Tumblr media
Wow, that was difficult. I had the most difficulty choosing who was first cuz honestly, Law and Chuuya are pretty even. So that's my top ten favorite side characters!

I decided to do a list of the top manga series I’ve read so far. This is purely for my own entertainment and in no particular order.
Tumblr media
1. Ten Count
This might be cringe but I love BL a lot. Ten Count is a complete series and I finished it practically right away. It’s hot, yes, but I feel like the portrayal of mental illness in this series is handled pretty well. Really it had me in tears near the end, but I’m a sap.
Tumblr media
2. Chobits
Perhaps another controversial choice? I bought the dark horse comics omnibus and finished the second one in one night. Really on the surface it’s kind of stupid. Falling in love with pretty robots? Boring and weird. But CLAMP imo just hits it out of the park with this one. It takes that insecurity that women feel being compared to these robots who have been modeled to be the perfect female companion in every way and addresses that. It could also be seen as an analogy (if that’s the term) for just normal human insecurity when faced with anyone we perceive as better than us. Also I thought it was a good metaphor for accepting the fact people can’t choose who they fall in love with and that’s valid. I infer this because of CLAMP’s other works like Wish and even Cardcaptor Sakura. Anyway Hideki is a sex crazed young adult male but he vows to be true to Chi who he can’t be with in that way. Talk about true love.
Tumblr media
3. Kimetsu no Yaiba
Ah. My favorite series ever. No lie. Demon Slayer is such a fascinating and well woven tale. I think the overall theme of humanity’s spirit being unbreakable in the face of so much pain is just... idk I feel the more I like something the harder it is for me to talk about it. Okay let’s try again. Tanjiro is our main character and probably one of my favorite characters ever. He is so sweet and fights so hard. He does have weaknesses (though not many) which make him slightly more relatable than he could be. I believe the love he has for his family is what keeps Nezuko from completely giving into her demonic urges. Love is another theme here as well. Another thing I like about Demon Slayer is how the backstory of many characters are revealed. Tanjiro has pity on the demons after they die because he knows they were once human. The demon’s backstories are some of my favorite. I won’t go into anymore detail because I just can’t formulate the words but anyway highly recommend. This series is complete in Japan but the official English translations haven’t finished coming out in print yet so I haven’t finished it yet.
Tumblr media
4. Bungo Stray Dogs
I think the thing I like most about this series is the fact that I am being introduced to famous Japanese authors I wouldn’t have heard about otherwise. In the states are world lit classes are predominantly white with some Latin American exceptions. I only read a Japanese novel my senior year of university because my professor had taught in Japan for many years and insisted we read Snow Country. Moving on. There is action in this manga but also tons of hilarious moments. The dynamics between the characters is also priceless. Chuuya and Dazai... don’t get me started. I am also obsessed with the Light Novel spin offs. I’ve read manga volumes 1 through 8 and currently our beloved detectives are fighting against the Guild whose members are based on authors from the English speaking world. Like the Japanese characters these Guild members have powers that the author based off of their respective works. I just find that very clever.
Tumblr media
5. Rin-ne
From the beloved creator for so many iconic manga series comes this little gem. I find it so funny. So funny it’s almost absurd, but it always cheers me up. I believe it’s already complete in Japan with 40 volumes? But I’m too lazy to look it up. I’m also aware that real fans go by chapters not volumes but again I am lazy.
Tumblr media
6. Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun
The title turned me off. Toilet bound? But I was unaware of the common tale of Hanaka-san of the toilet. Now I am. This series is at times sweet, funny and slightly scary. I don’t regret picking it up.

「My favorite scene of 「Dazai, Chuya, Fifteen」was when that scene from Vol. 8 of the comic is reproduced, I felt deeply emotional when I drew it」
Tumblr media
A Harukawa35 interview Spoon.2Di vol.49
—After 『Bungo Stray Dogs DEAD APPLE』, that was released on March 2018, the airing of the third season has finally begun. What were your feelings when the production of a third season was decided? Also, what did Harukawa-sensei expected of this third season? I don’t really remember the moment when it was decided to produce the third season, I’m so sorry. But maybe I kinda said 「It’s decided then! 」when they announced it? Although I always felt the atmosphere of the staff was of wanting to do the third season, so it probably wasn’t really a surprise the sequel was decided and I was glad that the staff didn’t change for the third season. What I expected was that the audience was amused and satisfied by watching it. — It was a surprise that the season begun with 「Dazai, Chuya, Fifteen」 (Episode 26), where it shows how Dazai Osamu and Nakahara Chuya met each other and ended in the Port Mafia. How do you feel about those episodes? It’s the staff that’s into surprises, so it’s something that the fans will most likely guess will happen again. To me, being able to have the visual image of a novel I haven’t drawn, it’s a very pleasant experience (to watch it). I was hoping to see it on air. —「Dazai, Chuya, Fifteen」 is a light novel that was originally distributed as an attendance bonus for the second week of release of the film 『Bungo Stray Dogs DEAD APPLE 』 . Please, Harukawa-sensei, tell us about your favorite scenes of the novel, the written and animated ones, and your reasons. It goes really back into the story, but when the three people in charge were at the meeting to decide the origin of Chuuya, Asagiri said 「I want him to be a demon」. At that point I was thinking「What is the point of him being a demon?」, and it was a good thing that I had the chance of doing something I wanted to do, because that way we got to decide how to approach how he came to exist in this world. My favorite scene was when that scene from Vol. 8 of the comic is reproduced, I felt deeply emotional when I drew it.
Tumblr media
—This time, Harukawa-sensei told me that she was in charge of the preview version of fifteen years-old Nakahara Chuya. Please tell us on what did you focus on when you drew it, the details, favorite points, etc.
Since Chuya didn’t wear black, he was described like this in the novel 『The dark green biker jacket like a rooster in the middle of the dark』, was it because the base was black and it looks green under the light? I checked it and thought that there was a reason for the jacket to not be clearly black, because he needs to wear an all black outfit after joining Port Mafia.
Tumblr media
—Another light novel given as a bonus on the screening of Bungo Stray Dogs DEAD APPLE was 「Bungo Stray Dogs BEAST, White Akutagawa, Black Atsushi」 and now the complete version was released, where Akutagawa is part of the Armed Detective Agency. Please tell us your thoughts when you read this work that is a parallel universe where Atsushi belongs to the Port Mafia. Als, the cover illustrations and the illustrations inside the novel show that the appearances of Atsushi and Akutagawa have different atmospheres. Please tell us what did you focus on when drawing the illustrations and how did you configure the characters on this work.
I didn’t want to make the characters profile for all of the characters, but I drew each illustration thinking about the black part of every white part and the white part of every black part (of every character, of course). even the eyes of Akutagawa were slightly changed to include some light on them, but Asagiri-san said 「I don’t want them to be white」, and in the original bonus of DEAD APPLE, 「White Akutagawa, Black Atsushi」, there was a subtitle describing the coat of Akutagawa was like「ash」, so I thought it would be fun to give it a meaning carefully.
—The release date for the next Vol. 17 of the manga is scheduled for May 2. What do you think about being able to draw the work so far? The story is getting more and more intense, but what else is yet to come?
I think that the most surprising thing so far for the readers is the thing about Tachihara-kun. I always wanted him to be the center of attention and I’m happy that he’s finally getting to play such an active role. The editor in charge seemed to be also very moved by this feeling, he said 「Tachihara-kun came to be drawn like this...」, of course there was also the sensation that it was going to be complicated, so there was an exchange like 「I don’t think  that’s the point for the readers」. As for the future, we still have a long way to go, but I hope you will continue to look forward to it because there are some personally happy scenes.
一Please leave the followers of 『Bungo Stray Dogs』, both the readers of the original work and the viewers of the Tv show! Fortunately, the people involved in 『Bungo Stray Dogs 』, including the staff for the anime and the stage, are highly motivated people. For the beginning of the second season it was decided to include a light novel in the middle of the story, he did it because he said “I have never done this”. I’m very happy that people who have been in this industry, who have been active for years, still have the chance to challenge that “I have never done this before”. It’s an honor to be chosen to work with Bungo Stray Dogs. I think that this work’s attitude of trying new things all the time will keep the readers encouraged. I have said it’s hard, I think it’s better to have fun with it as an amusement, so I would be happy if you can relax and look forward for the development of the story.

What do you think of the Bsd stage play?
I think it looks like a lot of fun!
Personally, I’m not a fan of anime-based stage plays myself. I find the nuances and character of manga and anime can’t be translated well onto the stage. I mean, if we look at the adaptations from manga to anime, you can already see how much is lost, and when it goes to live-action films... sometimes we don’t even talk about it. But the stage plays are a different story. I just feel that it isn’t my cup of tea, but I do respect the people who choreograph, write the screenplay and carry out the performance.
If you’re looking for the stage play, here are a few links to get you started!
