The folk singer-songwriter and playwright Ewan MacColl was born on January 25th at Salford, England.
Now and again I post about Anglo-Scots, those born over the border in the home of our closest neighbours England, McColl is a man who was proud of his Scottish heritage, there is no doubt, but there is no doubt he took much from his upbringing in Salford, most evident in the song about the city Dirty old Town.
Ewan was born as James Henry Miller to William Miller and Betsy (née Henry). William, an iron moulder and trade unionist, had to leave Scotland after being blacklisted at every foundry in Scotland, one of them being the Carron Ironworks at Falkirk, that crops up in my posts now and then.
Ewan left school in 1930 after an elementary education, during the Great Depression and, joining the ranks of the unemployed, began a lifelong programme of self-education whilst keeping warm in Manchester Central Library. During this period he found intermittent work in a number of jobs and also made money as a street singer.
In 1932 the British intelligence service, MI5, opened a file on MacColl, after local police asserted that he was "a communist with very extreme views" who needed "special attention” For a time the Special Branch kept a watch on the Manchester home that he shared with his first wife, Joan Littlewood. MI5 caused some of MacColl's songs to be rejected by the BBC, and prevented the employment of Littlewood as a BBC children's programme presenter.
Inspired by the example of Alan Lomax, who had arrived in Britain and Ireland in 1950, and had done extensive fieldwork there, MacColl also began to collect and perform traditional ballads. Some of you might remember my post Come All Ye Tramps And Hawkers from the Lomax archive a few weeks ago, he was a folklorist, archivist, writer, scholar, political activist, oral historian, and film-maker.
More well known by most as a singer, MacColl was also an actor, writer and playwright To put him into some sort of importance George Bernard Shaw said of him in 1947, “Apart from myself, MacColl is the only man of genius writing for the theatre in Britain today., fine praise indeed.
MacColl recorded a huge volume of traditional Scottish and English folk songs, as well as creating a vast body of his own work, which ranged from satirical protest songs to tender love ballads, the latter most popularly renowned in his composition, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, written for his wife, Peggy Seeger (another folk singer), but made most famous by Roberta Flack. His songs have been sung by the likes of the Dubliners, Dick Gaughan, The Clancy Brothers, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, David Gray and The Pogues.
Back to my favourite song by Ewan MacColl, Dirty Old Town, it’s not about Dublin, as many believe but Salford, because the Dubliners made it famous I think that’s where the confusion comes from.
Ewan must have been very proud of his daughter the late Kirsty MacColl, who followed on from her dad as a singer songwriter.
In 1979 he suffered the first of many heart attacks. The next ten years saw a steady deterioration in his physical condition, but he continued to work, tour, lecture and write songs. In 1980 he wrote his last play, The Shipmaster, the moving story of a sailing ship captain who cannot adapt to the coming of steam. In 1987 he began to write his autobiography, Journeyman. In the same year the University of Exeter presented him with an honorary degree. On October 22nd 1989, he died of complications following a heart operation. The University of Salford awarded him a posthumous honorary degree in 1991.
I’ve chosen The Bonnie Lass of Fyvie today as it is the first song I learnt and sang while still at primary school, probably aged about 10 year old.
If you want to know more about the man, his music and lots more check out the web page dedicated to Ewan here http://www.ewanmaccoll.co.uk/ewan-maccoll-biography/

Season 4 hasn't landed in Australia yet, so I can't wait to see how they write Miss Harbottle. I absolutely adore the books, but AW was not good at writing female characters. They were very one dimensional, very dumbed down - even his own wife. That's why this series has replaced the books for me. The writers have bought so much life to the characters I grew up with. Even the smaller parts are given backstories or nuances, like Clancy's owner. I love that Mrs Pumphrey is no longer a daft old lady who spoils her dog, but a lonely widow with no family, living in a gigantic mansion with her servants and her beloved Tricki Woo. That Helen will snap back at a farmer that calls her 'lass.'
she is the strongest person on this planet

semi-mass hc post bc why not?
growing up in a very active and rowdy family, clancy has his fair share of scars; most being small and otherwise unnoticeable. i mean, running around in the swamps of louisiana with like 8 other boys ??? yeah, he’s gonna have some memories.
he found most of his friends in high school thanks to his older cousin, david, who like...everyone loved. guy was nice enough to introduce him to some cool people before graduating.
he still ignored 99% of the population lmao
it’s hard for him to talk for a long period of time (conversation he can manage easily; it’s stuff like speeches or reading out loud he gets stuck on). not because of anxiety or anything; excessive talking just ,, hurts his throat, y’know?
loves g/lass animals and margot & the n/uclear so and so’s
also hella into shit like possibly in michigan
studio g/hibli is his KINK
is near-sighted, but he can survive without glasses or contacts. doesn’t mean he ain’t seriously missing out, though.
can ... rly handle his liquor
i mean there was that one time his cousins managed to get him intoxicated enough to willingly play the knife game
aka the time he got one of those aforementioned scars, right across his knuckle. good times.
he has 2 rex rats named ronald and mcdonald come on guys

Chromecast Audio Makes Usual Sound Speakers Smart Sufficient To Stream Music.
Free mp3 songs downloads have actually come to be typical however an individual has to make sure prior to opting for the website. Popular music downloads may not be that tough to get in to as soon as you find out a couple of suggestions regarding all of them to begin with. Quickly thereafter in July 1940, Martha Moore Clancy came to be priest of music at Ingleside Baptist Congregation, Shreveport, Louisiana, where she also created a completely rated program from choirs in overdue 1941.8 A graduate from Mary Hardin Baylor University, Belton, Texas, she had been a public college popular music instructor just before allowing the posture at Ingleside; nonetheless, she was not familiar with another similar plan prior to the one that she set up. Yet it was actually also an age - reaching just what is actually called the High Baroque and the Timeless era - from hundreds of various other deserving composers, whose popular music will just as unquestionably placed Lass as well as Junior to rest as will the songs from Pachelbel as well as Mozart. There are several features of this person, however essentially it's about the way of life and the songs. Additionally, personalities who really love music are actually often innovative folks (as is the case with real-life music fans), and also imaginative people have the tendency to be actually very fascinating. In some cases congregation songs was actually additionally undertaken by a Kantorei, which consisted of a mix from kids, educators, qualified artists, and rookies. On October 22nd 1989 Ewan MacColl, the multi-talented, socialist, folk singer-songwriter and playwright, died.
Now and again I post about Anglo-Scots, those born over the border in the home of our closest neighbours England, McColl is a man who was proud of his Scottish heritage, there is no doubt, but there is no doubt he took much from his upbringing in Salford, most evident in the song about the city Dirty old Town.
Ewan was born as James Henry Miller on 25th January 1915 to William Miller and Betsy (née Henry).
I’ve chosen The Bonnie Lass of Fyvie today as it is the first song I learnt and sang while still at primary school
If you want to know more about the man, his music and lots more check out the web page dedicated to Ewan here http://www.ewanmaccoll.co.uk/ewan-maccoll-biography/

I'm mad this show only got two seasons. I'm mad that I'll never know what it would've been like if Brian Fuller had stayed on and gotten the creative control he wanted for the show. I'm mad Betty was written off after five episodes. I'm mad that I'll probably never get to know what happened to her. I'm mad that George's dad was supposed to be gay but was instead written into "the middle aged professor who sleeps with students his daughter's age trope". And it probably goes without saying, but I'm mad that I'll never get to know how it was meant to end.

Quote
But here’s my point…when you’re suffering, and I mean you’re truly suffering, it’s the clichés that heal you. When I’m sad, give me George Jones or Willie Nelson. That’s the brilliance of [Shakespeare’s] sonnets - they state the obvious. Clichés are clichés because they are the things that have stuck to the wall. Our greatest arrogance is to believe that we are all special. Because the truth is, we are all unbelievably the same.

Dead Like Me Trivia: Clancy Lass
According to Bryan Fuller, it was originally planned that George's father would be gay, and this development would spell the end of Clancy and Joy's marriage. After Fuller left the show, the show's new executives decided that Clancy should be heterosexual, but philandering with his female students.
In case you didn't know: Bryan Fuller left early in the first season due to conflicts with MGM Television, including disagreement over major script and storyline cuts considered important to the main theme. He stated that the "lack of professionalism... made it really difficult... it was like being at war... they were constantly trying to strongarm me. It was the worst experience of my life". According to Fuller, Showtime canceled the show due to "a loss of quality and a sense the problems would continue."
