A MOVIE YOU LOVE: recently very in love with Marie Antoinette
A TV SERIES YOU LOVE: just recently finished the walking dead - currently watching breaking bad. In love with the Boys, ofc
CELEBRITY CRUSHES: jensen ackles, JDM, Chris Evans (my ride or die), Norman reedus, levin rambin

Name(s): MJ, Ninja, Min, Lieutenant, Mindy Lou Who
Pronouns: she/her
Other blogs: minefield-of-a-ninja
Zodiac signs: Capricorn sun, Aquarius moon, Cancer rising
A book you love: Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher
A musician or band you love: I'm a broad-spectrum music and movie lover, so these two questions vex me. BUT I will stick to just one because I also crave structure and being accurate (no matter how I often I absolutely do not maintain said structure or remain accurate.)
Jason Isbell's new record, Foxes In The Snow, has broken me into a million pieces and has yet to put me back together again. Everything he does is a living, breathing bundle of raw emotion and yearning. His voice tugs at so many memories and past hurts, and his lyrics make me want to punch a wall and then find someone to hug.
A movie you love: With the recent passings of the beautiful and audacious creators of art and love, David Lynch and Val Kilmer, I've spent the last several weeks immersed in the rumination of their works. (Imagine if the two had worked together!)
David Lynch's work blessedly and permanently rewired my brain to receive and engage with dark and sometimes arduous subject matter by giving the viewer a safe space to breathe and walk through it.
Val Kilmer embodied the souls of characters who were once living legends as well as fresh, fictional characters who he made his own.
Most recently, my husband and I watched The Doors. Say what you will about Jim Morrison and Oliver Stone (I certainly have a lot to say, but that's another post) but Val's performance is magnetic, seductive, and mesmerizing.
A TV series you love: So many. Right now, we're immensely enjoying The Studio with Seth Rogen, Catherine O'Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz, and Chase Sui Wonders. It's hilarious.
Who are your celebrity crushes: These two own me right now.

As they strolled through the layers of coal black night, Clare kept the pine-green irises on the moist grass and the muddy path while he spoke. " I wonder, truly, what would that wisdom bring. What would be the thing that you think would effect me? Claiming you know the secret ingredient to any being's torment, yet in reality, you don't even know the simplest thing as my name. " melodic giggle followed, laced with the echo of the inferno itself. " No need for being secretive, don't waste the probably already overly sutuffed drawers of your memory with the secret of my existence. If your brother wishes to witness something he can't break that easily, maybe the smart thig is to let him. I mean, as the overly protective family member, you surely have heard of the example: Let the children touch the flame, once they feel the burn, they won't reach for the fire again. " Indifferent to the possibility of the mad hybrid coming after her, that is what Clare was.
" No, she didn't. " probably to the male's surprise, blood haired woman agreed. " Actually, I quite enjoyed our encounter. No matter that it was mostly a bloodbath. " removing the few strands of hair off her neck while still walking deeper in the forest, another scared surface was revealed. A bite mark. It faded slowly, but it was still visible. " Quite a bite in that one. Must say it was a refreshing to see a woman with such a burning spirit. Capturing her was a challenge I didn't have in a long time. I almost regret having the bite faded, would make for a killer ' tattoo'. " Regret went beyond the simple thing such as a nice battle scar, it was rooted in the fact she had to capture the feisty blond, given the admiration for the same and the realization she was just an advantage for blackmail and trade to get back at Klaus. Yes, Clare wished to free the original's sister more than this man could realize. Immorality a thorn in her mind.
" I know that heart of yours didn't rot away with your human body as it should have. " low, flat tone left the plump lips. " Immortality only made it a dish that will be ravaged by everyone you hold dear for eternity. Piece by piece, and never seeing the end of it. You are right, I have no idea, frankly don't care either, but a sacrifice has no meaning, if it is not appreciated by those who it is for. " Clare finished her thought just in time another pair of footsteps was heard. Stopping her own two feet, redhead tilted her head, observing the person glaring at them.
Tumblr media
" I warned you about what will happen if I sniff out your damned scent here again. " Tyler snarled, barely containing his rage. " I see one abomination drags another. " turning his attention to Elijah, young werewolf stepped out from the cover of branches and devoured some distance. Clare said nothing at his insults, understanding his frustration given the situation and simply immune on such basic things as verbal insults. This will be peachy. " What the hell do you want? " getting impatient, Tyler insisted.
" Assistance. " Clare simply replied, not needing to even assume the reaction they would get. Disbelief followed with a disgusted laugh came from the young werewolf. " Only assistance I can give you is to drag you both by the neck to the cursed pit you crawled out from. " As a wolf that mastered the transformation at will, it was just a matter of time that Tyler will lose the interest to exchange words and proceed to biting. If they wanted to spare the original from a fever and Clare from another ' bloody tattoo ' they needed to state their reason for coming and give a worthy offer fast. " I know the loss your pack suffered. We are here to make sure it does not happen again... for a small price. "
"
Tumblr media
He had suspected that physical pain was no deterrent for her within moments of meeting her. He was more capable than that. The violence in him would love to be sated but he knew that there was no sense in needlessly giving into it, especially if it would not change anything about the current situation. It would be selfish of him to be violent --- something his brother had yet to fully understand or appreciate.
"I have lived long enough to know that pain is not the only way to make someone suffer --- but as I said, my interest is in getting my sister safely back. What happens beyond that is not currently even on my radar. I do promise, however, that the need for revenge is not as strong as my need to protect my family. I am not my brother. I can prioritize accordingly." He decided to sweeten the pot. "And in the end, what happened here tonight stays between us which guarantees that you will remain a secret to my brother. Given his desire to burn anyone who comes at him even in the slightest, it will save you pain, whether you truly believe it affects you or not."
They seemed to be on the same page thankfully and that would help in the long run. She was obviously capable of things that were beyond his understanding at the moment but there was no misunderstanding their common goal. He glanced down at the symbols, a sure sign that there was something magical at work. Something that would take the same depth of magic to undo. So he understood her desire to get to the bottom of everything.
"My brother is a wolf as well. People conveniently call him a hybrid without thinking about what that means. I have no problem convening with wolves if it gets me to the end I need. My sister did not deserve this and I will not here otherwise," he added at the end, holding up a finger as if it would prove a point. Their peace would be tenuous at best. He then shook his head. "You also have no idea or understanding of my relationship with my brother so it would best not to spout off assumptions."

♡ I have an absolutely giant soft spot for these two, there's something about them that makes me really happy and I really enjoy them - bumps and struggles included of course. In some small ways they remind me of my own relationship! (If you ignore the Thing between Ryder and Luna... yeah.)
Tried to keep them close to the original designs with an added twist of our own, and obviously that meant keeping Jakes corpse like skintone - which, unpopular opinion.. I actually like? 😭
Of course we had to keep Ryders iconic shoes and socks that never match anything else he wears, because he's adorable and ✨️quirky✨️ like that.

Dented Ch. 3--AU
Finally thought of a name for the AU.
“Why haven’t you answered my texts? Do you not want me anymore?” I ask carefully. Just asking hurts. I forgot this much pain was possible.
“What? Kristoff, of course I want you. You’re my son. I just got your texts five seconds ago. Remember I was going on that camping trip? I told you about it at the restaurant. And that I wouldn’t have cell service.”
“I feel like a dumbass.”
“I still love you. Come in. You’re not okay. What’s going on?” She leads me from the entry hall to the spacious pale blue living room.
“Besides Regan being horrible? I went to a party on Friday. Clare’s girlfriend was having at her lake house. Anyway, it happened again.” My face twists into a grimace as I sink onto the matching blue sectional. It’s much softer and more plush than mine.
“What’d Regan do? Who was it?”
I show her the text reluctantly. It gives me a little time to dredge up the courage to tell her about the party.
“I was really drunk. Blackout drunk. Clare told me today he was blond and she thought his name might be James. I remember doing shots with Clare and then I woke up in a bed.”
“Did Clare know? Did anyone try to help you?”
“Yeah, she knew. Apparently, I could be heard over the music. Nobody did anything that I know of.”
“How’re you doing with this?”
“Oh, I'm peachy. I lashed out at the one guy I actually trust. I'm cutting class because I don’t want to look at Clare right now. Things are just fabulous. Oh, and I'm not sleeping and I'm really depressed. Can’t get better.”
“Have you thought about getting help? I believe you, Kristoff. I hope you know that. I'm sorry you’re suffering.”
“Yeah, telling a stranger about this sounds great.”
“Kristoff.”
“I might be leaving the bakery.”
“I thought you loved it.”
“I sorta slept with a guy’s brother and he’s being a jerk to me about it.”
“Were you a couple?” She sounds more excited than I expected by the possibility of me having a boyfriend.
“No. Just a hookup.”
“You know that’s not safe. Are you using protection at least?”
“If they don’t wanna use a condom, I don’t sleep with them. That’s like the only rule I have.”
“At least you’re being smart.”
“How was the camping trip?” I don’t want to discuss my sex life.
“It was good. There’s something really important I need to talk to you about.”
“You found a fae village in the woods.” I smirk teasingly at her. She’s my best friend. That might make me a mama’s boy. I don’t care.
“No. I met a guy. He’s really sweet. He asked me to dinner for this Friday.”
“What’s he like?”
“He’s sweet. He’s genuine. He has kids of his own. He’s very respectful.”
“Does he work?”
“He’s a video game designer.”
“How’d you meet him? Was he a client?”
“His sister is my best friend. He came on the trip with us. The poor thing, he was the only man there. We started talking and we just…clicked.”
“You didn’t sleep with him, did you?” The idea fills me with horror.
“Kristoff!”
“Now you know how I felt.”
“You’re a brat. If you need to not be alone, you know you can stay here.”
“I know. Ransom’s been staying since it happened. He sleeps in the guest room. And he keeps making me breakfast.”
“Do you like him?”
“Does it matter? I'm so fu—screwed-up. I mean, yeah, we slept together before it happened.”
“You deserve to be happy, sweetie. I know that’s hard for you to believe. But you do.”
“If it hadn’t happened, he was gonna ask me out.” I sigh softly.
“And? How do you feel about that?”
“You sound like a therapist. It would’ve been nice. I mean, he’s a great person. He’s hot. He’s smart.”
“Is he still interested?”
“I think so.”
“Are you interested?”
I nod slowly. He’s someone I would like to date. Someone I could maybe be with.
“He sounds like a good guy. He might be good for you,” she tells me gently.
“He is a good guy. He deserves better than a mess like me.”
The depression has become a physical weight in my chest. What happened and the fact I don’t deserve to be happy or in a stable, healthy relationship don’t help any. I am worthless.
“Alright, you have me really worried. Kristoff, are you thinking about killing yourself?”
“I'm not quite there yet.”
“Bu you’re still really bad?”
“Yeah. I don’t get like this.”
“I know. If you need to check in somewhere, I’ll take you. You have my support.”
“I don’t want to. I don’t wanna be hospitalized. I don’t wanna start therapy. I just wanna get through this crap on my own and go on with my life.” I rub my fingers absently over my phoenix tattoo. It was the first piece of ink I got. And it’s the most meaningful. Because phoenixes rise from the ashes. No matter what I face, I'm able to bounce back eventually. Right now, I need that reminder.
“I hate to tell you this, but you’re not Superman. There’s no shame in getting help.”
“I know that.”
I don’t want to need help. I know how society sees people who have mental health issues. And I don’t want them to see me that way. Ransom comes over after his shift tonight. He has a black duffel bag with him this time. Anger flickers in his jade eyes, despite his friendly smile.
“If you don’t wanna babysit me, it’s fine,” I assure him quickly.
“You’re not the problem. I like you. I met your sister.”
“How’d that go? Regan’s a nightmare, isn’t she?”
“You’re nothing alike. We’ve already butted heads.”
“So, they hired her?”
“Don’t threaten me like that. Did you know your sister doesn’t like Jews?” An edge slips into his low voice. I don’t like the distrust in his green eyes.
“No. Ransom, if I had, I would’ve told you.”
“Riley told her off. I know she’s your family and everything, but she was an utter bitch to me.”
“That would be Regan. Are you okay?” I touch his forearm gently. The sleeve of his black hoodie is soft.
“I'm irritated with her. I'm more worried about you.” He smiles gently.
“You still like me? I'm sorry she was nasty.”
“You’re not racist. You okay? I’ve dealt with it a lot.”
I shake my head quietly. I don’t want to talk about it. I’ve talked about it enough today.
“What do you need? We can go do something. Or watch movies or whatever will help,” he murmurs gently.
“I'm sorry. You don’t have to stay.”
“You’re my friend. You’re in crisis. I'm not abandoning you.”
I didn’t think he’d want to stay. I know it’s inconvenient. A hassle. Which means I am. But here he is.
“Thanks.”
“How was class? Did anything interesting happen?” He sounds so genuinely interested it surprises me. Guys don’t do that.
“I walked out. Clare and I got into it and I didn’t want to look at her.” I sigh shakily. I feel like all I do anymore is break down. So much for masculinity.’
“You cut class? You never do that. What happened?”
“She knew what happened. Everyone knew. And nobody tried to help me. She blamed me. I didn’t hear from her all weekend either.”
“I thought she was your friend.”
“Yeah, so did I.”
“For what it’s worth, I believe you. And it’s really crappy that they did nothing.”
“Thanks. How’d you meet my sister?”
“I did a tattoo for her. A simple rose she picked out of the book. Took twenty minutes. She argued with me about the aftercare. Called me a stupid kike. That was when Riley stepped in.” He rakes a hand through his hair.
“She should’ve never done that. You’re not stupid. And she should’ve never called you a slur. I'm sorry.”
“I didn’t get a tip. Because my people are ‘money hungry penny-pinching misers.’” He toys with his blue Star of David necklace. I’ve noticed he does this when he’s upset.
“How much was the tattoo?”
“Forty. It’s not a money thing, Kris. It’s the fact she played the anti-Semitic card. The fact she used my race as the reason to not give me a tip, not my work.”
“I knew you were tryin’ to get a new car. That’s why I asked. I'm sorry.”
“You’re not giving me the tip your sister should’ve. I don’t take handouts or pity.”
“I wasn’t tryin’ to piss you off. I'm sorry, Ransom. I was tryin’ to be nice.”
“Were you? Or were you trying to be my ‘rescuer’?”
“Yeah, I was! I thought you’d be happy that I was tryin’ to make up for her.” I flinch at the sound of my own raised voice.
“I stand on my own feet. By my own merit.” He sounds just as angry as I am.
“I don’t wanna fight with you.” I don’t have the energy. I’ve spent it on fighting the battle raging inside my head.
“Me either. And you didn’t need me arguing while you’re already feeling bad. Which makes me an ass. I owe you an apology for that. I'm sorry.”
“Forgiven. Thank you for staying.”
“You’re welcome. And I'm not being nice to you just so we can hook up again when you’re okay.”
“I wouldn’t hate you if you were.”
I wish that wasn’t true. I wish I would be angry with him if he was using me. But I can’t do that. Ransom’s sleeping soundly on the couch when I get up. He’s even more adorable asleep. I envy his easy sleep.
I start breakfast, even though I don’t feel much like eating. I don’t feel like going to work or class either, but I have to.
“Good morning. Did you get any sleep?” Ransom says, startling me.
“A couple hours.”
“You look exhausted.”
“I am. I'm gonna send my teachers a text and explain what’s going on.”
I know I can’t avoid Clare forever. I shouldn’t have to. She should’ve believed me and been on my side. But she wasn’t. We’ve known each other since we were fourteen. I mean, I used to go to her family’s holidays because Regan and I fought so much. Clare’s pretty much family to me.
“Good idea. Any way you can take your classes online?” He looks perfectly at home in my kitchen with one of my mugs clutched in his slender hands. I wish the thought didn’t make my stomach twinge. I’ve never had hope for a picket fence of my own.
“I’ll ask.”
I dread going to work almost as much as dealing with Clare. Maybe more.
“Text me on break?” he asks hopefully.
I agree easily. By the end of my shift, I'm ready to quit. Eight hours of being sexually harassed does my fragile mental health zero favors. My boss knows. She doesn’t care.
I don’t tell Ransom over text. I don’t want to upset him. If I tell him at all, it’ll be face-to-face.
I have a text from him, inviting me to dinner. He’s clarified that it’s not a date, which I appreciate. I agree easily.
Maybe if I wasn’t such a broken mess, I’d ask him out. Maybe if I thought he could like me more than for just sex. Maybe if I wasn’t so scared. But I am.

So chic with some of the finest, small batch, premium Cabernet + Bordeaux blend wines…We’ve got you covered! Everyone (there have been many) whom we have recommended to @sixmilebridgevineyards has swooned over their wines, cool tasting room + patios that are nestled amongst the vines on Peachy Canyon Rd between Law Estate + Villa Creek with @michaelgillcellars as their neighbor. As long-time avid wine enthusiasts, owners Barbara + Jim Moroney greatly admire + appreciate the talent that winemakers bring to the craft of making fine wines. With this in mind, they were honored to work with one of the most esteemed winemakers in Paso Robles, Anthony Yount. Anthony works alongside his wife, Hillary, who is their vineyard manager. As the adage goes, great wine starts in the vineyard. And to this end, they couldn’t be happier to have Hillary on their team. She meticulously manages their 23-acre vineyard that they planted on the famed west side in Paso Robles with their favorite varietals: Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc + Semillon. What’s behind the name Sixmilebridge? The namesake has a rich history - On July 22, 1852, a group of peasants + 2 Catholic priests protested for their democratic rights in the small town of Sixmilebridge in County Clare, Ireland. The result—the Sixmilebridge Massacre—is the fateful event that ties together the Moroney Family’s roots, Jim’s career in journalism + the red hat on their label. long leg, an almost 70s flare.” This was a sentence I wrote in my notebook back in January during the men’s AW19 fashion shows. These were the words of Clare Waight Keller, the designer at Givenchy who dressed Meghan Markle for her big day. The flare is part of a new era for menswear at the Parisian house, marking a distinct shift from the previous administration, where the brand had come to be defined by streetwear, and a sellout rottweiler-emblazoned sweatshirt. Flared trouser suits in strong red and a fabulous teal blue appeared on models walking through Givenchy’s couture salon in Paris. It all rippled with a breeze of expensive glamour. Waight Keller cited not just the 70s but the 90s as inspiration, another era with a strong flared trouser game, if you think of Britpop stars such as the mighty Jarvis Cocker.
Fast-forward a season, to the close of the SS20 men’s shows in June. I posted on Instagram an image from the Celine show by Hedi Slimane, captioned: “A flared Celine jean. That’s all, Paris.” Slimane’s model army strode the runway en masse for a finale rammed to the hilt with flared trouser hems, underlining the fact that the flares trend looks likely to have legs, as it were. I left this show with a head full of images of Yves Saint Laurent during the 70s, on a rooftop in Morocco. I was also more than a little obsessed with the idea of getting my legs into a pair of Hedi’s new jeans.
Between these two moments, Quentin Tarantino’s new film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood had premiered at Cannes. On screen, Leonardo DiCaprio wears, among other variations on this bottom-half theme, a pair of peachy-pink flared trousers. These were specifically created by costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips. The trousers had already made tabloid headlines during filming last October. “Pink Pants-er” was a particularly choice pun.
So, with some serious style endorsements of the flare, is it time to quit your designer jogging pants and/or – finally – ditch those infamous skinny jeans? Probably. Donatella Versace, whose latest show featured flares in both house signature prints and black, wants you to strongly contemplate the notion. “Men, I think, are having way more fun than before, experimenting with new silhouettes, colours and prints, and the flare pants are part of that process of exploring one’s own personal style I have been doing for a few seasons,” she said.
Versace herself has often taken her end-of-show bow in a kick flare. She thinks a man in flares reeks of confidence. “The attitude I had in mind was, ‘I like it, so I wear it.’ Like everything else in a man’s wardrobe, whenever you change or introduce a new element, there are a lot of people who are sceptical. More than ever, though, we live in a world where people are encouraged to express themselves – be it through one’s own ideas or style. And I love it!”
Elisabeth Murray, fashion curator at the V&A in London, cites Tom Ford’s SS00 Gucci men’s collection as a significant flares moment, including “a particularly daring python pair”. She thinks the flare comeback is part cyclical, part a general interest in the 70s from designers. “Flares are a way to inject fun and frivolity into menswear,” she says, “which is something we’re seeing on the catwalk.”
With menswear dominated by streetwear and cult sneakers for a decade or so, the flare could be seen as part of a shift back to dressing up. Suiting has been reinvented again by the likes of Kim Jones at Dior and Virgil Abloh at Louis Vuitton – two designers who have often been seen as integral to “sports luxe”. The styling of suiting on runways isn’t about a Mad Men-style professionalism. Designs are cut away from the body and worn with wider trousers for a more louche and easy silhouette. Flares are part of a new wave of upscale chic – the opposite of the familiar body-conscious skinny jeans – crossed with, as Versace says, a new experimentation in men’s fashion.
Murray references noughties Gucci as a moment, and Gucci circa now is also key to the flare comeback. Designer Alessandro Michele has featured them in his menswear since 2016 and they are central to the retro maximalism that has become Gucci’s calling card. Michele wears them himself – as seen on the Met ball red carpet in May. This season, Gucci featured velvet suits with bell-bottoms, so the designer is not getting tired of the shape.
Other brands are also onboard. Balenciaga have been toying with boot-cut denim. Martine Rose – a British designer who loves a wide slack – has featured various flared styles for her label and Fendi’s trousers have also recently had a kick to their ankle. Plus the first men’s runway collection by Jonathan Anderson for Loewe – arriving in stores now – features a fantastic pink tuxedo styled with a pair of definitely-swingy-at-the-hem trousers.
Flares have a history that means almost infinite images to mine for inspiration. Sailors are thought to have been the first to adopt bell-bottom trousers in the 19th century, partly because they rolled up easily, while Oxford bags in the 20s saw the circumference of a hem reach over a metre. It was the late 60s when flares took off. By 1969, they were so popular that astronauts on Apollo 11 reportedly wore their spacesuit slacks with a flare. By the 70s, they were on Sonny & Cher’s TV show, the Studio 54 dancefloor, Abba at Eurovision, Slade, Earth, Wind & Fire. Even footballers wore them as part of suits off-pitch circa 1977. Naturally, as all fashions do, they peaked by the end of the decade, replaced by the drainpipes – proto-skinny jeans – favoured by punks. Flares would not return until the 90s, once again associated with music, from Britpop to grunge and rave.
Phillips says the clothes DiCaprio wears are representative of various changes happening in 1969 in politics, Hollywood and fashion. His character, Rick Dalton, a 50s TV cowboy actor, is, Phillips says, trying to be considered relevant in this new era. “He has many costume changes in this film, one of which is the sherbet peachy-pink flares worn when we see Rick making an effort to keep up with the changing times.”
But what do flares semaphore in 2019? Ben Cobb, editor-in-chief of Another Man (and street style favourite), is a poster boy for the flared look and has been wearing the style since he was 17, when he picked up a pair of 70s flared jeans. He now says he has pairs for all eventualities, including velvet tuxedos, bespoke suits and cords. “There is a feeling of elegance and glamour returning to fashion, and flares in menswear are a great symbol of that,” Cobb says. “They evoke freedom and flamboyance.”
There is little doubt that flares are inherently something of a statement – from John Travolta strutting down the street in the opening sequence of Saturday Night Fever, to Jarvis Cocker in charity shop flares, doing his best lounge singer impression in the video to Pulp’s Babies. Sometimes campy fun, sometimes countercultural and free-spirited. I recall dressing up Jarvis-style (plus hair curtains) to see bands or go to raves in the 90s and am quite sure I considered this a kind of grungy-alternative decision. Luke Leitch, a critic for American Vogue, who recalls having flared cords in the 70s as a child and boot-cut jeans in the early 90s, argues that “they transmit that he [the wearer] isn’t afraid to sail against the prevailing winds of taste. And there’s something about flares, when worn with panache, that seems appealingly sleazy.” While they are yet to reach the high street in earnest, vintage styles are a good way to shop the trend for autumn – and bring a bit of a 90s feel to proceedings.
Flares are also often associated with the kind of sexually topsy-turvy and androgynous styling of the likes of Robert Plant, Marc Bolan, Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie – all musicians Phillips says were inspiration to her when she started her career dressing Lenny Kravitz in the late 80s. “In the early days when we had no money, I would dress him in women’s flares I found at garage sales or flea markets, which had the perfect proportion for him.”
A few seasons ago, as trousers seemed to be getting wider, I bought a pair of black Dries Van Noten kicky flares. As soon as I put them on, something shifted in the way I stood; I felt leaner, a little sassier perhaps, so I reach for them when I’m looking for an extra slash of dressiness. I’ve worn them to the opera in Paris and the ballet in London. Friends have noted they “add a certain swish” to an outfit. “It’s a really sexy shape,” Cobb confirms. “But the fit is essential: it has to be tight on top and sweep out from the knee. They lengthen the leg and make the bum look great.”
Mark Weston, creative director at Dunhill, has since SS19 been experimenting with a split-hem trouser that gives off the idea of an elongated flared silhouette. He says, “I think this is happening as a reaction to the saturation of sportswear and a rejection of skintight jeans. There’s a desire for clothes that combine utility and elegance with a sense of ease.”
Weston says if you’re planning to experiment with this current trouser proposition, you should “wear it slouchy and comfortable – never uptight”. He adds: “Proportionally, the leg will look longer. So the top half should have either a slightly oversized proportion, whether a great T-shirt or peacoat, or a long and lean Chesterfield coat, to balance it out.”
I ask Versace how to wear it. “You know me, I don’t do things half-heartedly,” she laughs. “You either go with it or you don’t. For the less brave, I’d suggest trying them with a suit jacket and chunky sneakers.” Cobb agrees flares work best when they are making a statement. “Go big. Anything less is just a boot-cut.” Francesco Risso at Marni concurs – this season he offers a flared hem in a bold leopard print.
As for the attitude to channel while wearing flares in 2019, the last word goes to Givenchy’s Waight Keller. She coined the phrase “perverse poshness” to describe her menswear designs for the house. This, she argues, is about “looking refined but not really caring about it. There’s something very elegant about that.”
