HEADCANON

Pre WWI / Vampyr Jonathan

Before the events of Vampyr and his service in WWI, Jonathan had more of a pep in his step. While he was known for keeping to himself, his mother even stating that he was always a very secretive child, we know that he did let one or two people in despite his tendency to primarily focus on his studies and later his work. His best friend Clarence Crossley, and friend, Venus, who would later marry one another, were seen as his closest friends, even being the best man at their wedding and dancing with Venus. He also admitted that he cried at the wedding too, showing that he really did care about the two of them and there was a passion about him when it came to those he cared about despite his quietness and preference to sit to the side with his books. There’s also the fact that a prior patient of his, Carolyn Pryce, states that upon his return, despite it only being three years that he’d been gone, he looked much more mature and more serious than he had before, which is why I like to think that there was more energy to him before, a sense of vitality that the horrors he endured ultimately ripped away from him. His mother confirms this again by commenting on the newborn Ekon’s ‘empty and dead eyes’, as well as Vicar Larrabee mentioning that he could see the rage in Jonathan’s eyes but also the pain. 

It should also be noted that at this point, Jonathan doesn’t have any scars on his face, his nose isn’t broken, he doesn’t have a beard and he’s not as badly malnourished.

Another headcanon for the masses --

Geoffrey served as a Lance-Sergeant on the Western Front. He would also be the only one to put an end to the vampires that took advantage of the blood shed, including the one that Clarence Crossley swore up and down he saw amid the trenches. In which case, Geoffrey was always on the hunt, even during times of war.

the character model used for Venus Crossley is sometimes referred to as "Rosalind Dawson" in concept art—so for any of us confused about what she was doing with Clarence, this seems to me a resounding answer (I'll grant that Venus continuing to live an upper class lifestyle while Clarence spent all their money on printing vampire awareness brochures is still a good read, tho whether that was explicit or implicit i don't recall)

but, yes. her surname clearly indicates that she was not originally conceptualized as Clarence's wife, but as a relation of Aloysius Dawson's. a trophy wife, or perhaps a public-facing high society daughter to make their family image look very good?

and i think we see something like a glimpse of this original concept in one of the earlier trailers—forgive the undoubtedly low-res screenshots, I'm on mobile, but!

Lord Firstname Redgrave is taking a bite out of Venus/Rosalind in this scene! and it quickly pans right, through a window and down to the street to focus on Jonathan approaching Ascalon club

so, what? did Aloysius give his daughter/wife up to Ascalon in exchange for membership/vampirism? is she cheating on him for a chance at vampirism? or just for the dubious thrill of bedding Redgrave? (tho I'd totally get it if he still had that beard...) or if she'd already become Venus by the time this trailer was made, then was this supposed to be how Clarence got his grudge against vampires—the attack/demise of his wife?

on the other hand, DONTNOD is hilariously guilty of arbitrarily populating the scenery with whatever NPCs they had on hand for promotional material, since they had none crowd mechanics...

Clarence was so suspecting that something is wrong with Jonathan. His remarks of always meeting him at night, and he also said something "I hope we are talking about the same habbits". I wish Jonathan could reveal it to him normally not just when he kills Venus.

And then Johnny would show him that not every vampire is bad, that would have been so good 😭
