Hi you’re very kind in always answering people with their art questions i appreciate you so much!! I wanted to ask if u have any books/videos that helped you on your art journey? Love your art so much ur an inspiration 😘😘
hi!! this is so nice of you to say and you’re very welcome 🥰 - books and videos under the cut!
videos
what helped me a lot when i started with art is to watch time lapses or draw-with-me sessions so i can kind of copy how artists draw or paint. however it’s "Level Up your Portrait Drawings" by Chris Hong (ETA: sorry the link doesn't seem to be working, so i've included the title of the class) that was like a turning point in how i drew faces. it’s available via membership on skillshare but i think you can sign up for a month free. i can’t recommend it enough! the quality of my portraits changed after this especially with regards to anchor points—i learned how to tweak my art with this video and i do feel it carried over and improved the way i drew very visibly <3
another video i feel created a huge improvement in my drawing is this class by Lexin Yuan (qrbits). this is a lot more rigorous and thorough than the previous one and also included feedback from the artist (!!) and it’s available via subscription to Class101 but lexin has since made a free version on their youtube which i HIGHLY recommend as well (actually i would recommend their entire channel) - from here i learned how to make characters stand and pose properly, i learned to draw from dance videos, i learned about boxes and anatomy in a very approachable way.
another artist i’m subscribed to and whom i enjoy watching draw is likelihoodart. i love looking at their art bc i feel like they have the perfect blend of semi-realism and stylization - plus their OCs are amazing (the general art rule for teeth is don’t fill them out, but i’ve never seen anyone draw teeth a good as them! i mean look at this work in particular). i picked up some rendering styles and tips from watching their draw-with-me videos.
i’m also currently subscribed to Loish’s patreon where she has very useful and in-depth tutorials and guides. she explains it so well and i also see a lot of the artists in their patreon community sharing their improvements and it's SO cool and encouraging. she has accessible tutorials here you can check out :)
books
comic books/graphic novels - i think i mentioned before but when i first started drawing (again, after living artless as a corporate cog), i was in my marvel (mcu//stucky) phase and one of my fav comics back then was matt fraction’s hawkeye. i liked david aja’s style and i would copy entire panels from the comic in ink into my sketchbook. so i would recommend copying whatever art style comic or manga or graphic novel you like into your sketchbook as personal practice (not for public sharing). re-draw your favorite panels! copying directly from the source also helps you figure out how the artist might have drawn their works.
figure drawing by michael hampton - if i were to recommend just one figure drawing/anatomy book to you, it would be this one - this is also a direct recommendation by lexin yuan and i found this book to be easy to follow and the concepts are understandable. i am at heart more of a gesture drawing artist so his emphasis on line of action and dynamism is something i really appreciated.
ART BOOKS! in particular: spider-verse 1 and 2 art books - everyone knows these and for good reason; ami thompson's character expression sheets alone are worth the price. seeing concept art is always very special--you get to read how a team of creatives come up with ideas and you can learn how to incorporate them into your own art. these two are currently my favorite art books, but i also like the art of tangled (glen keane's sketches are in the inside of the covers and that alone made me want to weep they're so beautiful). and sometimes i go into the japanese section of my local bookstore and see what art books they have - i got this one last year which i really enjoyed, and i got a copy of ryoko kui's doodle book for dungeon meshi and i just love it SO much. their character designs are varied and top-notch and it's just so FUN to go through (if you're interested in this, they'll be releasing an english version soon!)
i also draw a lot of inspiration from artists who make and sell zines of their own art or sketches or sketchbooks - some of them even offer it for free! it seems to be a lost art nowadays because people think zines have to be like big collaborative productions, but it can just be a pdf of your sketches. i literally have a page from one of my fav artist's digital zines printed and taped in front of my desk for constant inspiration, and it's just a sketch of theirs. there's nothing quite like seeing an artist's work in zine format <3
my gawd sorry that was so long BUT i hope these are helpful to you in any way!! <3

Hi Heartmush! I hope you are having a good time of day :)
I was planning to take your class in Class101 but it did not show up/showed an error message, I was wondering if you deleted the class or if the fault is on Class101?
Thank you!
hi! i ended my contract with class101 a while ago, and currently am re-organizing the files so i can host them on my own (whether it be ko-fi or patreon, etc.)— i will let you guys know when it's back up!

I have been meaning to do some @crom-ink fan art for a while. CROM is one of my favorite comic artists. I've taken his Class101 and I largely tribute my leap back into making comics to following his work. A humble, amazing person. Here I just did a quick rendering of the "Birdking" which is his flagship property on Darkhorse. Just a fun romp. Highly recommended! #comic #comics #comicart #instgaramart

Hey! i really want to take your art classes, but the class101 site is terrible and their subscription costs are exclusively $200 with no cheaper option. Is there another platform you've posted them to? or somewhere we can buy the lessons direct?
Heya! Unfortunately I dont have any control over pricing in Class101, when I first launched the class it was a one-off payment but they changed their subscription model in the meantime :') the class isn't available anywhere else sadly

I can assure you half of storyboard artists, animators or illustrators have not went to college. I mean if you want to take it professional, make sure you go to artist groups or discords to get criticism for your portfolio. Also use courses or books to learn storyboarding. i would recommend this storyboard blogger's resources to get you started. https://homeiswheretheinternetis.blogspot.com/2017/09/animation.html?m=1
If you are into anime or anime animation I recommend youtuber dong chan, coloso or class101 to learn. But both also have western cartoon or realistic art classes too. For an company I recommend tonari animation, studios with anime-like animation like powerhouse or companies or game studios that worked with or have a anime-like themes to find work but also looking at some job boards such as LinkedIn, but make sure you learn some japanese too to reach more opportunities. Here's a person that have worked in japanese studios. https://m.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=415&v=KP4Ii3LjEmM&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2F&source_ve_path=MTY0OTksMjg2NjMsMzY4NDIsMjM4NTE&feature=emb_title
Happy to pass this along!

2, 6, 22, 25! (for those artist asks)
artist asks ough this got l o n g
2) 5 favorite works of your own?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1-2. After being in a slump for so long and not being able to finish full pieces, I'm really proud I managed to push through with my entries for Rose Magazine! I really enjoyed trying make insect themed clothing inspired by Barong tagalog (though most of it is hidden ;w;) and Baro't saya.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3-4. These drawings I did for this year's artfight! (Olive belongs to Maizemaze and Preston belongs to U3pxx. Used this year's AF as a way to experiment with my process a bit and really liked how these ones turned out (cleaner rendering with olive and fiddling with lighting with preston)
Tumblr media
5. Oldie but but goldie (to me,,) this is where I really wanted to start pushing myself to do bigger illustrations.
6) Which artists inspire you right now?
Hoo boy a lot, I can think of a lot of artists with all different types of styles with all different types of reasons. I tend to lean towards artists who do character design and narrative illustration. Off the top of my head though, these are who I can think of at the moment!
Ryoko Kui
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where to begin??? Everyone knows her character design is *chefs kiss* just gorgeous, but i also love the way she draws food, dunmeshi's panels (especially anything involving Falin) and the way she draws expressions (especially Marcille's reactions to the party's shenanigans)
2. Vivian Ha (TWT/ Tumblr)
Tumblr media
ahh man they've been such an inspiration to me for such a long time, i think i found out about them around 2016? their linework and the shapes in their work are so fluid, and their coloring is so so soft
3. Tan Jiu ( IG / Twt)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tamen de Gushi my beloved. There's something about their colors, the way they draw their characters interact (aside from sun jing and qiu tong, I also really love sun jing and mophead's dynamic, the way they draw their expressions are so funny) and just the warmth and coziness from their illustrations with sun jing/qiu tong. fills me with utter joy
4. Lyoo_lyoo (IG / Youtube / Class101)
Tumblr media
Lot of pretty boys in this one, I found them through one of their speedpaints on youtube and their process was very interesting to me! Their colors are so warm and tasty and i love the way they paint hair and clothes!.
5. Jarvisdean (IG)
Tumblr media
had to screenshot this one on IG ignore the arrow ;w; One of the official illustrators for All Saints Street. The way they draw characters so SHAPED, the composition and the detail!!!
22. When is your prime time to work on your art?
Usually afternoon to evening! I've been trying to avoid staying up too late to draw but this also ends up with me drawing personal stuff at work and forgetting to do my work tasks until it's really late.
25. Based on your recent reference searches, what would the FBI assume about you?
Tumblr media
i wouldve probably gotten away with something mild but unfortunately i have the word foot in there so nothing good

Learning Plan
The goal for this year is to strengthen my portfolio in commercial illustration, background art, and character design. I aim to define my artistic process by exploring and mastering different digital tools and media, participating in competitions, and connecting with industry professionals. This learning plan will focus on key areas such as skill development, techniques, and refining my creative process.
To enhance my skills, I plan to study online courses from platforms like 21Draw, Class101, and Skillshare. Some specific courses I have chosen include Neimy Kana’s Figure Drawing for daily practice and anatomical understanding, Isaac Jadraque’s Character Design Made Easy to refine my character development, and Kenneth Anderson’s Character-Driven Illustrations to improve my storytelling techniques. To deepen my understanding of light and shadow, I will study Aveline Stokart’s Mastering Light and Shadow and Maria Lia Malandrino’s Lighting and Shading: Make Your Art Shine!. Additionally, Simone Grunewald’s Digital Illustration with Procreate will introduce me to these subjects while strengthening my digital painting techniques.
For stylization and color theory, I will take Gummy’s Class101 course, Coloring Techniques to Create Your Own Unique Character and Art Style, which I see as a crucial step in developing a consistent rendering process and improving my character designs. I will also further my knowledge with Sarah Holiday’s Mastering Colour in Procreate and Yifat Fishman’s Exploring Landscapes: Travel-Inspired Gouache Paintings. Altogether, these courses will be a significant boost to my artistic growth and workflow.
In terms of process, I will experiment with various brush sets from the artists whose courses I am taking. These textural brushes for Procreate will help me develop a unique look for my work. While Procreate will be my primary software, I also plan to revisit traditional techniques like risograph and linocut, which I enjoyed working with in previous years.
I may have a couple of online friends who could be potential collaborators, but overall, I prefer working independently. My projects are personal and focused on my progress, so collaboration doesn’t feel essential. I once took on a commission for someone and didn’t enjoy the experience, so I don’t see myself pursuing that path.
Regarding industry progression, I plan to submit my work to competitions such as the Penguin Student Design Award, Macmillan Award for Illustration, and AOI World Illustration Awards. I also aim to create commercial work like prints and stickers for potential online sales. Additionally, if any interesting opportunities arise throughout the year, I will consider participating.
For research, I will use Pinterest for gathering references, Etsy and Gumroad to explore brush sets, YouTube for speed paints and tutorials, and various course websites to continuously improve my techniques.
I don’t anticipate any major challenges or the need for additional resources, as I have everything necessary at home to complete my coursework and projects without issue.
I hope this year will be productive and better than the last, allowing me to create a portfolio I can be proud of.

hihi ! i wanted to ask if you're a self-taught artist or if you went to art school to get where you are right now? ^_^
hi! the short answer is "technically no", as i've gone to art school.
my longer answer is the following:
i have complicated thoughts about the term "self-taught". it's difficult to know where to draw the line, so to speak.
for example, if i take an online course (say, a class101 course, or skillshare), does that still "count" as being self taught? does taking AP art count? or a public watercolor class, or even following a tutorial, whether online or those "how to draw manga" books (debatable but that's the point of this being complicated, I think).
what about if you went to art school, and learned very little from the staff? most of my teachers assigned projects, but it was up to us to develop the skills necessary to carry it out. they would not teach us how to draw, but rather simply gave us guidelines on the project (i.e, it has to be a three page comic, or a work based on a news article). i've also encountered plenty of teachers that have done... the opposite of teaching.
basically, a lot of my time in art school was spent teaching myself the necessary components to fulfill the requirements set for me. i don't know if that still counts as "self-taught", even though i was the only one working.
i do think i've benefitted from some teacher's knowledge and the opportunities afforded to me (access to supplies/printing machines, etc.), so i'm not saying i'm entirely self taught or that art school isn't "worth it" (that's an entire other discussion that i don't care to get into), but i also know i've spent a LOT of my time teaching myself too, during university but especially growing up, when my family was against my wanting to be an artist in the first place.
to summarize, i think everyone is self-taught to some degree, and the idea of "self-taught" and suddenly not being self taught because you went to art school is an arbitrary way to categorize people.

Would you ever consider releasing your class101 content as a one time payment rather than have to subscribe to the website?
I don't have any control over Class101, unfortunately their payment model is on them :')
