so ive been raving abt it a good deal in discord lately but following playing it at a LGS, ive been considering the logistics of playing a BATTLETECH ttrpg game. my reasoning for this is that while battletech was designed to be a wargame, i find it to be far too crunchy to work well as a game with only two players controlling an army each. However, it seems to me like it would function Very well in the way a roleplaying game does - about 4 players, each controlling one unit and working together.

all that said. there is an official rulebook for playing a battletech-based rpg game, which has ways to integrate the original games systems.

... except i read through it and i kinda hate it. so! instead ive been slowly puzzling over how i could use LANCER's pilot rules (because i know and like them) and BATTLETECH's mech combat rules in one game

most of lancer's pilot rules are pretty well separated from the mech rules, so separating them and slapping it onto something else isnt a longshot. there are, however, two major hurdles;

the first is that lancer has four pilot skills applicable to mechs, whereas battletech only has space for two; and the second is that i would like to also carry over lancer's tech attack system if possible, however those are dependant on both a tech attack stat on mechs and an action-economy based system.

fixing the first of those two is the lesser difficulty, as halving the number of points given per level fron 2 at level 1 and 1 for each level thereafter to 1 point ay level one and 1 every other level should work appropriately. will come back to this later though.

the second issue is more difficult to fix, but could possibly be done by exchanging the use of an action for the generation of heat, as is how the rest of battletech works, and the power/scope of the attack, instead of being based on Sensors and Tech stats, could be based on a mechwarrior's skill, adding another to the list of skills above.

which brings us to three pilot skills.

Battletech is a little weird, in that with pilot skills (PILOTING SKILL & GUNNERY SKILL) a lower number is better. this makes a bit of a conundrum in that it begs the question of what should the baseline be? and 'average' mechwarrior will be scored as a 4 in both skills, but a level 1 character should be fresh & green, not having the experience to be 'average'. additionally, there is the question of how much those stats can be levelled, and what the max level may be. should a character at max level be capable of upgrading each skill to a value of 1? balancing is a difficult thing and i am not good at numbers.

as it stands, my current thought is that i think i might sample with mechwarriors starting at a base value of 7 in three skills, using lancer's standard upgrade quantities of 2 for first level and 1 for each thereafter, and having characters unable to advance past level 10.

that isnt quite resolved, but the final issue that comes to mind is availability of mechs. i think that using licenses the way lancer does would be ideal, however my current thought is to have characters buy licenses with each of the great houses in tiers. this would mean that a mechwarrior might buy a class4 license with house steiner, gaining the ability to pilot all the mechs associated with that house underneath a certain tonnage. licenses might be granted every other level, at which time a player could choose to change the association of any active licenses as well as either acquire one from a new house or progress the license they already have with a particular house.

i think the biggest flaw with my thinking here is that it means id have to pick an era, then go through all of the mechs employed by each house to compile lists of what each house might employ. to make it easier on myself i think i might restrict each chassis to be used by one house/license each, giving access to all variants of that chassis at once.

theres definitely more to,be covered but the majority of it is provided in BATTLETECH rulebooks and doesnt need to be changed, such as mech aquisition, salvage, and merc company c-bill management.

The article introduced me to Dangin, who is not someone I would've otherwise known by name – but someone who I'm sure has contributed in making me feel 'a kind of bottomless need that I associated with early adolescence. It reminds me of this article, which I read while in my undergraduate, when I was throroughly upset with a photo someone had taken of me.

That's been a pervasive feeling, of not feeling like candid shots of me in the routines of daily life ever come out as 'good as they should'. While reading the previous article, I stumbled upon this other article, which suggested that fashion magazine editors maintain the idea that what they put out is not taken at face value (pun intended). I however, disagree. Even if the logical part of my brain knows that someone 50 years old isn't looking like a 24 year old in real life; or that if I sit in a relaxed state, my hips and shoulder blades won't stick out at exceptional angles and capture light in the most balanced way, that's where the impact of photography is so different from any other form of art. In the way that we grown up to consume media, I am able to discount a beautiful painting, a lovely description, or an eloquent song by thinking that the artist has taken liberties to 'cover up any blemishes' and present an ideal version of what they were imagining when creating their art. In photography however, we do not lend ourselves that wide lens – photos stick to our mind as they are.

Adding to this insidious cause, I look at Dangin's work not as aesthetic creation as much as being part of the problem. He admits as much himself: 'He admitted that he was complicit in perpetuating unrealistic images of the human body, but said, “I’m just giving the supply to the demand�� '.

This also lends to larger idea of the 'male gaze' in film and photography. While reading Collins, I can't help but think of what Dangin visualizes when he sees a photo of a person that needs to be retouched. When reading the article, I did not see why the Demarchelier photo had anything 'wrong' about it, until the edited version came along. Much is telling about Dangin's psyche also in that he refers to blemishes and blips as 'anomalies'.

The fact that by the end of researching for the article, Tolentino started feeling self-conscious, even though she was perfectly healthy, is disquieting. It also made me think how much of my life have I spent not living life as me, but going through the motions as if someone was always observing my every single move. The answer was unsettling, because most if not all my memories of my life seem to be in the third-person.

So much for aesthetic.
