Imagine teaching Pride and Prejudice to teenage boys (while girls are in the room). Imagine teaching it to teenage boys going through puberty and, generally speaking, a hard time. Imagine refusing to let the boys ruin it for the girls with their bad attitude, which they often try to do. Imagine refusing to simply shut them down in a way that makes them shut down but instead finding the right path for them to still be able to respond to it but only appropriately. Imagine working really hard to give them space to have their own opinions but once again not allowing them to express those opinions in a way that sucks the air out of the room for all the other students. Imagine dealing every day with the waves of struggling teen boy entrenched-in-the-culture misogyny that the work brings out of them and that they direct at you. Imagine having to make it a top priority to not allow their attitude to make you hate them but treat them with respect and appropriate friendliness, even though the attitudes they display ARE profoundly unlikable and they push you to the edge of hating them every day. Now imagine doing all of this while both your principal and the revered founder of your school who occasionally pops up into your life (both men) speak dismissively on Jane Austen. Imagine.
#teaching tag#I don’t say this often but I really am God’s strongest soldier for that one 😂#honestly many of the boys are fine. respectful. and generally enjoying themselves in the way they’ve enjoyed all the works#(cause I make them enjoyable)#the numbers of boys who struggle is actually kind of few#when I force myself to think about it rationally#but it’s the worst thing there is in the entire world and takes every ounce of my skill and cunning and strategy and bravery to deal with#making this one unrebloggable cause I don’t want to hear it#also who am I kidding. I LOVE the struggle and the challenge#also just in general every day I move towards respect being the foundation of my classroom#NOT likability#every day I learn to coast on it a little less and how to find the lines that can and can’t be crossed more accurately#so that the question of liking me or the work I teach is irrelevant Frankly#to the necessity of behaving well towards me and their classmates#and bringing in an appropriate attitude towards learning#it is by far the hugest lesson I’ve had to learn and I am not done learning it#but I’m so excited to learn it. more and more. and be able to apply it better and better with experience

Plushies in their natural habitat, day something:
The Gremoblin, the donut isopod, and Susan the Monster hang out on top of the shelf holding the blankets I use for fabric for fuzzy plushies (behind them you can kinda see a giant elephant that used to be my grandma’s and…I think that’s the alpaca cria prototype? I’m not entirely sure)
#plushies in their natural habitat#plushies#sewing#handmade#the gremoblin was designed with input from a classroom full of toddlers#A+ crafting experience they were delighted to help#I still have not made a cigar for the isopod#I moved my step stool thing downstairs to the kitchen#which is very helpful but also means I can’t access the top shelves in my room anymore#like. on tiptoes I can reach enough to put a plushie up there but I can’t see or access the back of the shelf

unpopular opinion - the ddlc girls are great and i love them and its totally understandable why everyone loves them - theyre incredibly well written in so many ways - but
i want more protag-kun content also :(
#he's got a character arc too!!!! cmon :(#monika and the player are using protag-kun as a window to view each other how does this level of existential horror#in addition to everything he sees happen when shit gets fucky#not get more attention#like he starts off as a dick and with the support of the girls gradually opens up to show a caring sweet and mischevious side#and then BAM. trauma conga-line#and based on how ambivalent about everything - even bitter - at the start#just not interested in anything or anyone#i wouldnt be shocked if he has some depression going on there too - which starts to lighten with the power of friendship - only...... :"(#i cant get over how he was just. stuck in that classroom for that entire weekend with yuri's body. thanks to monika screwing with the code#like. what must that have been like.#ofc everyone is rightly interested in the sheer power of sapphism going on here but he can like. be there as a pet or something a;dkfa#team lesbian mascot - the generiboy lmao#ill grant i havent looked at the fic just the fanart tho#like hes not just a blank wall. he reacts based on his personality and experiences and the cause and effect#hes just as real as the girls even if he is protag-kun#the realization that he only exists to be projected upon too as monika and player are having that conversation...... man#especially with so many of his decisions being controlled by the player#its extra free-will commentary#hell make her trans and boom now theyre ALL lesbians#the other club members were just preordering lmao

in a class this term about literary awards where we read only winners of a specific award and i'll be honest i straight up cannot read another book where they use disability as a metaphor
#also i'm gonna be even more honest award-bait novels have patterns as much as award-bait movies#and like almost every queer award-bait novel follows a few specific beats and it's obvious if you read a lot of them#so when one of my classmates is like 'oh this breaks new ground' i'm like oh so you don't read any books about gay and/or trans people huh#we also read a book by a diaspora author set during the cultural revolution and i was like it's well done but i've read this before#and in the classroom it became VERY obvious that no one had much familiar with chinese-north american literature#this is not to say that gay or trans or chinese diaspora novels are all the same#just that if you're really gunning for a literary award there are some common moves that juries like and recognize#anyway back to the point why does every author who wins this specific award write in like a blind character whose blindness grants them#greater insight into the truth of the world#like had that trope of disability as metaphor not been played out already in antiquity#can we not think complexly about lived experiences of disability in this day and age#don't even get me STARTED on authors who use hearing loss or deafness to talk about the slipperiness or deceptiveness of language#what if we used hearing loss or deafness to talk about how abled people value their own convenience over disabled people's needs or humanity#what if we did that! okay im done i'll probably delete this i just got pissed off#personal nonsense

my seniors have been so quiet all year and it’s been fine cause we’ve had a lot of writing/research to do but I need them to talk to me now so i was hit by a bolt of inspiration two days ago and I made them all tell me their comfort level with sharing aloud, rating themselves on a scale of 1-10. I then averaged the class score and they’re a 4.5. I then told them yesterday we needed to raise the score the tiniest bit. And the 1’s and 2’s didn’t need to be 10’s just maybe 3’s and 4’s. And they tried! They talked more 😭
#it’s sooooo hard because when a class is quiet my default is to assume you hate me#which is so hard because I need a response. which is why I actually can handle a loud raucous class pretty well because it’s just about#holding their attention and redirecting#but when they’re quiet it’s so hard. but i’ve really forced myself to be like ‘they don’t hate you they’re just quiet’#and they ARE#and actually they are reading (not all of them lol) and a lot of them want to learn#it was really helpful going to try to capitalize on this today#I had a moment a few weeks ago where I taught them a poem and it was crickets and I was like sigh they hate it and me#but then I said wanna learn another one? and like—seven of them nodded at me with big eyes and quiet enthusiasm#and I was like okayyyyy there is something going on#it feels so different teaching them than any other class it’s been a real learning experience for me#also yesterday we were talking about Jane Fairfax and Emma hating her lolololol#and Emma being frustrated with Jane’s reserve and I teased them a little bit#I said you’re not cold but you ARE reserved and I am Emma trying to get you to tell me about Frank Churchill at Weymouth#literally lol#ALSO it hit me like a ton of bricks yesterday that this is the class where I need to tell them WHY I make them tell me all the plot details#and we go over it together#and the actual concrete purpose of it. cause it isn’t just book-clubbing it!#it has to do with guiding them through a novel but also teaching them how to do it themselves#I get so prickly when people think it’s just book club behavior#if I was in a book club i would be a tyrant which is why I belong in a classroom#ANYWAY I AM WASTING THE DAY AWAY#but i have woken up with great excitement because I’ve been mulling on the seniors all year#and I feel like I’m getting somewhere#teaching tag

you know one of the most ridiculous things when learning english? you learn words like hear, dear, year, ear, near, and bear. can you see the frustrating one? why is it like that?
and after that it just keeps going…
#the bear specifically makes me angry to this day#earth? early? learn? yearn? smear? wear? pear? pearl? gear? fear? sear? search? clear? fine#but the fact that at least 1 classroom entirely thought it was pronounced like beer#in grade nine#after starting to learn english in grade two#and the teacher had enough experience of the same to know to point it out before the lesson#that speaks to something imo

i love skeleton crew and assassination classroom for treating schoolwork with the same amount of urgency as battle to the death. like yes when i was 13-15 my math tests did in fact make me feel like i was in the middle of a fight where my opponet had a machine gun and all i had was a knife. and yes my ACT did in fact feel as urgent as being stranded in space with no help other than a half senile robot and a morally gray pirate. such is life as an early teenager.
#especially when you go to an elite private school like the kids in these stories do. i know this from experience#skeleton crew#assassination classroom#guys i miss both these shows so bad

it sucks to have auditory processing issues when trying to communicate in your second language bc you will be doing just fine with most people and then you meet someone with a heavier or unfamiliar accent or who doesn't enunciate as clearly and you're cooked
#remembering my experience w uber and this driver who mumbled spanish at me while i stared helplessly#until he did a dramatic sigh and switched to mumbled english 😭 but at least i could understand him then#people did compliment my spanish on this trip!! but this one guy made me feel like a toddler lmao#and you never wanna be like hey um. can you speak a little clearer please 👉👈#for the sake of my dumb usamerican ears 👉👈#i learned in a classroom i'm sorry i sound like a university student in a seminar when i speak your language

i'm taking business 101 this term bc it was an easy social science credit, and the professor always takes a 5 minute break halfway through his lecture-
i've been to two lectures now and for those breaks he played good luck babe and cabinet man respectively. he's a 50 something retired harvard business graduate, where is he getting these songs
#it's great#and also has a odd unreality vibe#cabinet man especially is a weird experience to play in a near silent classroom

Love it how ass class said "if you try to teach your kids by shouting at them the only thing they'll learn is how to try and predict you so you don't shout at them" and literally everything else they said in there. Gold show.
#how to give a cis perisex character gender dysphoria/trauma 101#actually jokes apart as a trans guy i rlly like how everything is portrayed in this anime#nagisa is not trans. but his experiences to be honest are very similar to that of a trans person on his moms expectations on his gender#“youd be so cute with this dress and your hair if you were a girl~” “(i dont care. im not a girl) ...”#anyways both the tranny and the whumper in me are always happy with this episode#ass class s2#ass class#ass class rewatch#assassination classroom#ansatsu kyoushitsu#s2e9

From my Spanish notes: Jacobe in prison with Shaqtus → 40 days pass → gets on a plane and DIES. Shaqtus watched fortnite videos in hotel. Jacobe → market → buys drugs. shaqtus hallucinated. they (one being dead) returned to Bangladesh on Sunday. So: Jacob → died → went to market (as a rotting corpse) → bought drugs (still very much a corpse) → went home (still very much rotting).
#campus speaks#. yeah#uh#i have no words#i was in the room when this was hashed out#very glad to have been there#10/10 experience; i will never have an experience like this with that group of people again#i kind of mourn that#but i will forever cherish what that classroom gave me
