The ever-imperiled Fay Wray gets higher billing, but the real star of Mystery of the Wax Museum is Glenda Farrell, playing an intrepid (what else?), tough-talking (ditto) newspaper reporter, Florence Dempsey. Flo's boss, Jim (Frank McHugh), gives her her walking papers, so she sets out to find a sensational story to save her job. She uncovers the sinister plot of Ivan Igor (Lionel Atwill), who is opening a new wax museum in New York. Igor had a similar museum in London, but it was losing money, so his partner in the business, Joe Worth (Edwin Maxwell), burned it down to collect the insurance. Igor was trapped in the conflagration but survived. Handicapped by his wounds, he trains new sculptors to re-create the glories of the old museum. One of the trainees is Ralph Burton (Allen Vincent), whose fiancée, Charlotte Duncan (Wray), turns out to be the spitting image of Igor's most prized sculpture in the old museum, an effigy of Marie Antoinette. Naturally, Igor plans to "sculpt" Charlotte into a new Marie: His method of capturing images is, let's say, not the traditional one. By a bit of breaking and entering, Flo manages to discover the macabre truth behind the wax museum's images. The plot gimmick -- a reporter uncovers a madman's schemes -- is exactly that of Doctor X (1932), Michael Curtiz's other venture into horror movie territory filmed in two-strip Technicolor, which also starred Atwill and Wray. Mystery of the Wax Museum is the better movie, with Farrell giving a better performance as the snoopy reporter than Lee Tracy in the earlier movie. It also has a neater plot, and a real creep factor in the spooky statues -- most of which are actors standing very still. Makeup artists Ray Romero and Perc Westmore and costume designer Orry-Kelly deserve special mention.

Based on the light novels by Sarasa Nagase and Mai Murasaki, I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss is being directed by Kumiko Habara (I'm Standing on a Million Lives) at studio MAHO FILM, with series composition by Kenta Ihara (Saga of Tanya the Evil) and character designs by Momo Makiuchi, Eri Kojima (In the Land of Leadale) and Yuko Oba (I'm Standing on a Million Lives sub-character design).

Most of the team behind My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Season 2's soundtrack, including Natsumi Tabuchi, Hanae Nakamura, Miki Sakurai, Sayaka Aoki and Kanade Sakuma, are composing the music.

EP Review: semi-deadly - "catholic guilt"

I love records that are equally creepy and a bit off-center. Anything that surprises me or puts a chill down my spine is right up my alley. That’s why when I came across semi-deadly on Bandcamp, I knew I had found something incredibly special. Their debut release, catholic guilt, is hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing in identical measures. If you’re into the bedroom production style of music-making then this will be the record for you — every bit as stripped down as you would expect, but the atmosphere doesn’t end there.

It begins with “sage” which has a repetitious guitar hook and a lovely melody that screams like a Hole demo, ballad-style. The lyrics are tough to make out with the distortion and the background noise, but the heart is all there. When the song begins to end, the singer croons over the bridge/chorus in such a nostalgic way that I can’t help but recall Halloween’s of the past.

“white smoke” is dreamy and cathartic, and semi-deadly is at their best here vocally. The vocals are just purely angelic in a dark way — so dark in fact that (with the combination of simple instrumentals here) I’m brought to an abandoned church in my dreams, soaring over the pews and holding my breath for more. I would argue that “white smoke” is the best track on this release, but you be the judge.

The third track is “claude cahun” and the vocal track is much more clear. “I’m scared / I’m scared,” is sung so calmly that I get scared listening to it myself. There are little breaks throughout the track that make ebbs and flows throughout until the electric guitar kicks in and makes the atmosphere that much heavier. “I keep falling apart” is sung before the song once again goes quiet, picking up again where heaviness was left off and semi-deadly makes more moves toward the more inky aspects of songwriting, incorporating a bridge with sampling and an eerie outro.

The final track “lead foot” brings in percussion for the first time throughout the entire release. It’s light and airy, almost pop, but semi-deadly’s voice brings just the right amount of out-of-sorts vibe to the mix. Their voice carries so much jet-black energy — I would love to see them perform live just to get the full experience.

semi-deadly brings so much to the figurative table; a sort of gloom that is inviting in the strangest way. I feel so welcomed to catholic guilt’s space and I believe that was intentional. There’s something to be said about finding love in all the wrong places, but I think for this instance, I find myself crawling towards the shadow that semi-deadly emits. It’s a stroke of genius from a widely unknown artist and it begs for your attention in its own quiet way, with just a little spark of love going about the whole thing.
