Pro tip for anyone wanting to start with polymer clay: you really don’t need a lot of fancy tools. Sure, do they help as you get more into it and make more detailed pieces, of course! But if you’re just wondering what’s necessary as you’re starting out (and I’ve been there once- everyone has to start somewhere!), you really don’t need much! I’ve gotten a bunch of my friends into starting with clay and all we really needed was the clay! Maybe i’ll follow this up with a more comprehensive list of basic tools around the house that you can use when you don’t have any tools/don’t want to buy tools, but the best basic tool in my opinion is a TOOTHPICK! It’s so versatile- for blending, shaping, detailing, dotting, and more! I made all these pieces here with just my hands and a toothpick. Cottage Paint – Black and White Crackled Stool with Twigs and Birds Nest Image Transfer using Transfer Gel – Painted Furniture Thank you to Deb Vanden Broek of U Nailed It DIY Studio in Peterborough Ontario for sending in this cute stool pic! This is the only piece I’ve seen where an image has been transferred on top of a crackled surface, and the result is absolutely stunning! Deb pained the stool in Cottage Paint Black, then applied Easy Crackle, then painted White on top of the Easy Crackle, let it crack, then used Transfer Gel to apply the image and protected it all with Satin Varnish.
