Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) is a federal program that was included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The program provides support for Americans who are unable to work due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but do not qualify for traditional Unemployment Insurance (UI).

NYFA is administering $1,250,000 in aid to Tri-State Relief Fund to Support Non-Salaried Workers in the Visual Arts. BATGIRL #1-4 NOVEMBER 2011 - FEBRUARY 2012 BY GAIL SIMONE, ARDIAN SYAF, VICENTE CIFUENTES AND ULISES ARREOLA

SYNOPSIS (FROM DC DATABASE)

Somewhere, an elderly Graham Carter waters his garden. A mysterious figure comes up behind him, and identifies him as a man who survived the sinking of a transport ship, when all 27 others of the crew did not. The strange man introduces himself as the Mirror, and then takes the hose from Mr. Carter, jamming it down his throat, and drowning him with the water within. Crossing Carter's name off the list, the name Barbara Gordon is written below it.

Later, Barbara Gordon patrols Gotham City, finally having returned to her role as Batgirl. High above the city, she spots the killers she's been trailing.

A group of masked thugs are holding the Ortega family at gunpoint while their leader explains why he likes home invasion and murder. He shows them a scrapbook documenting all of their recent killings, and introduces his gang as what the media has dubbed the "Brisby Killers." The leader notes that he picked the Ortegas out of the phone book, and that if the parents cooperate, they may leave the kids alone.

Suddenly, Batgirl smashes through a window, knocking one of the thugs to the ground. She loves the exhilaration of leaping into melee combat, noting that her upper body strength is greater than most, as she knocks out a thug with one punch by accident. After taking out all of the others, only the leader - the gunman - remains. She can see it in his body language that he intends to shoot the Ortegas.

Thinking on her feet, she tosses a batarang into the leader's wrist. Angrily, he tackles her, launching both of them out the window. He winds up dangling at her mercy, and she ties him to the balcony before securing the others and leaving the scene.

That night, Barbara dreams of the past. She was once the Batman's star pupil, but one night, she answered her door to find the Joker standing there with a gun pointed at her. He shot her, and the bullet went through the first lumbar of her spinal cord, paralyzing her from the waist down for three years.

She wakes from her nightmare, and remembers where she is. Fortunately, she regained her ability to walk, since that night. She walks in on her father, James, enjoying a cup of coffee. He informs her that it is actually evening, and she has slept all day. She has plans to move out today; to move into her own place, and "stretch her legs."

Barbara's new place is in a building called Cherry Tree Hall, and her roommate is a bartender by night and painter by day. Despite her new roommate's quirky personality and penchant for activism, Barbara thinks they will get along well. She offers to help Barbara move in, but becomes distracted by the wheelchair lift in the van. She tries not to admit that it was once meant for her.

At Sacred Hands of God Hospital, the thug that Batgirl injured with her Batarang is receiving treatment, and remains under watch by Detective Mel McKenna and her partner. In the same hospital, The Mirror asks to see a Theodore Rankin before punching the receptionist in the face and shooting a security guard. McKenna and her partner hear the shots, and prepare to face whatever awaits them.

Barbara has rigged her phone to receive her father's messages, so that she can follow up on any calls for police assistance. Discovering what's happening at the hospital, she gets her motorcycle out of her van, and rides to the scene. She rides her bike right into the building and onto the elevator.

As the Mirror makes his way to their room, McKenna and her partner warn that if he doesn't get away from the door, they will shoot. In response, the Mirror blasts through the door, shooting McKenna and her partner in the process. McKenna survives, but her partner is not so lucky.

The Mirror approaches the injured thug, claiming that he should have fallen to his death during the altercation with Batgirl, and that has put him on the list. Barbara reaches the scene, and attempts to intervene, but the Mirror aims his gun at her in just the same area that the Joker had when he crippled her. Lost in her memory, she freezes long enough for the Mirror to shove the patient's bed out the window, into a long drop to the street below.

Having watched the whole scene, McKenna accuses Batgirl of being a murderer as she stood there and did nothing to stop it.

Batgirl realizes that she has not fully recovered psychologically from the shooting that crippled her years ago. When the Mirror pointed a gun at her, she froze, and failed to save Detective Douglas Paulson from being shot to death, and failed to stop the leader of the Brisby Killers from being thrown out of the hospital window to his death.

The Mirror prepares to make his escape, but Paulson's partner, Detective Mel McKenna - who blames Batgirl for his death - points her own gun at the killer. She is unfortunately suffering from a likely concussion, and can't aim her weapon properly. She is forced to impotently shout after him as he leaves and Batgirl gives chase.

Batgirl vows to catch the Mirror, chasing him across rooftops and finally leaping down and kicking him from behind. Unfortunately, she misjudges her speed, and both of them are thrown off the edge of a building. Desperately, they both grip an outcropping gargoyle. Strangely, the Mirror seems to have unfinished business. Sympathetically, Batgirl reaches down to help him, but he reveals that she is on his list of intended victims, and wrenches her by the arm from her foothold, throwing her into a free-fall.

Desperately, Batgirl releases her Batrope, grappling onto another outcropping. Unfortunately, her trajectory brings her to street level, and she slams hard into the side of a moving taxi. Naturally, this angers the cab driver, and Batgirl is forced to drag herself up, nurse her cracked ribs, and shuffle away.

Back at the hospital, Detective McKenna refuses medical attention, despite being quite shaken. Eventually, Commissioner Gordon appears, and commands McKenna to allow the attending physician to look at her. He orders that she take mandatory bereavement leave and return after the department psychologist clears her. Before she leaves, McKenna warns that there will need to be a second warrant; one for Batgirl's arrest. The Commissioner is visibly shaken.

Batgirl follows Mirror's trail to the Hollows, an exclusive cemetery reserved for Gotham's rich and privileged. He senses her presence quickly, and calls out to her. She leaps out, but she is no match for him, and he lands a heavy punch in her gut. Knowing that she can't take another hit like that, Batgirl resorts to her wits instead, trying to tire him out by dodging his attacks. Charging him, she manages to steal his list from within his robes. He swipes it back from her hand, enraged that she would dare to look at it. Then, the sound of sirens fills the air, and before she can react, the Mirror is gone.

Without anywhere else to go, Barbara Gordon changes out of her costume and winds up at her new apartment. When her roommate Alysia Yeoh answers the door, she is surprised to see Barbara there, crumpled, wounded, and seconds away from blacking out. Barbara wakes in Alysia's bed. Alysia spares little time in drawing attention to Barbara's obvious injuries, and warns that she is one minute away from calling the police. Barbara assures her that she is not being abused, and is not a criminal - but she won't tell her what's really going on. Barely convinced, Alysia offers to make Barbara some soup. Awkwardly, Barbara asks to borrow something cute to wear.

Later, in her borrowed dress, Barbara has a date with Gregor, her physical therapist. He has worries about the ethics of dating a patient, but Barbara reassures him. They walk through the park, and he asks her why she doesn't talk about when she regained the use of her legs. Barbara responds that she doesn't believe in miracles, and wonders why - if someone is handing them out - she was a recipient. Gregor tries to assure her that some miracles do happen, and that her recovery doesn't have to come at a price.

Later, Barbara does some research at the library, following a lead she picked up on from Mirror at the cemetery. He had mentioned fire, and she assumes that it must have been significant to his reason for being there. She cross-references fires with people who match the Mirror's physical description, and finds the story of a federal agent, Jonathan Mills, who was the sole survivor of a car crash.

Batgirl heads to his apartment, finding that the windows have been rigged with alarm trip wires. The alarms seem to be deactivated, though, and she breaks in. Inside, she finds a veritable arsenal of weapons. Suddenly, the Mirror appears on a large video monitor and addresses her. He explains how he had been forced to watch as his family burned to death in the back of his car while he survived. He feels responsible, and believes that he should have died too.

The Mirror shows her a news clipping showing a man who collapsed on some train tracks, but was saved by a stranger. In response, the Mirror has placed a bomb on the train that the man rides to work daily - for a sense of closure. The Mirror plans to use whatever means necessary to bring an end to all miracles.

With the Mirror mocking her through her ear-piece, Batgirl races to one of Gotham City's trains in order to save a man whom the Mirror has marked for death merely for having survived an event miraculously. Rupert Ansell had fallen onto the train tracks on his morning commute, and had been saved at the last second by a good Samaritan going the opposite direction. The Mirror's MO sees him murdering anybody who seems to have been saved by a miracle, because he doesn't think miracles should be believed in. Batgirl knows better, because the fact that she's standing at all is a miracle.

Banging on the engineer's window, Batgirl determines that the train can't be stopped, and the doors can't be opened. Frustrated, she gets inside by smashing in through one of the windows. Rather than try to find the bomb that the Mirror has planted, she searches for Ruper Ansell himself. When he comes forward, she sends the other passengers out of the car. Understanding the Mirror's method, Batgirl banks on the fact that she is also on his list.

She wraps her arms around Rupert Ansell, knowing that the Mirror can't blow him up without blowing her up too. Batgirl is on the list because she miraculously survived a fall during an encounter with the Brisby Killers. If she dies by explosion, it will thwart the Mirror's plans. However, the Mirror has the upper hand, as he reminds her that the good Samaritan also survived by a miracle. Moments later, the train going in the opposite direction blows with Rupert Ansell's saviour on board. Batgirl saved one man, but allowed another to die.

Two hours later, Det. Mel McKenna tries to convince Commissioner Gordon to let her come back in to work. The Commissioner reminds her that protocol requires her to see a psychologist about her partner's death before she can come back to work. Grumpily, McKenna decides to hold her own investigation into Batgirl, who she blames for her partner's death.

Barbara visits her father at work, and invites him to lunch. She is obviously shaken about her encounter with the Mirror, and the man she allowed to die. Her father sees it, but rather than open up, all she can do is tell him that she misses him. Seeing that she's upset, her father expresses worry that she's taking on too much. She has only just recovered from her injury, and he worries that she will relapse if she works too hard. He can't take lunch with her because of a lead, and Barbara watches him go, wondering if people really see her as that breakable.

That night, Batgirl breaks into the police impound lot, having left her Batcycle outside the hospital the night before. She is interrupted by Nightwing, though she claims to have known he was tailing her the whole time. She invites him onto the back of the bike, and they crash through the fence, speeding through the twilight streets of Gotham.

Though she loathes to admit it, the feeling of Dick's arms around her on that bike makes her feel very good. Parking the bike, Barbara demands to know what Dick is doing there. Awkwardly, he admits that he's checking in on her because he and Batman are worried that she could end up back in the wheelchair if she's not careful - just like her father does. Frustrated, he is forced to simply ask whether she can handle the Mirror on her own. In answer, Barbara kicks his feet out from under him, and rappels off into the night.

She recalls how she and Dick used to chase each other like this even back when they first met - he an acrobat, and she a ballerina. Despite his cockiness back then, his kindness made up for a lot of it - and it became easy to like him. Richard Grayson was the first boy Barbara ever had a crush on who wasn't a scientist. Admittedly, she still feels the way she did during that first crush when she's around him - but it's an admission she can barely make to herself.

When Dick catches up to her, Barbara decides that she's had enough of well-meaning boys, from Dick to Batman - even her father. She will have no more of men trying to protect her when she doesn't want or need it. She says that if men keep on trying to protect her, she would send them back with blackened eyes. She begins physically sparring with Nightwing, offering little quarter, and forcing him to defend himself. Finally, he yells out that the reason that he and Batman have been worried is not because they doubt her, but because they love her. Shocked, Barbara realizes that she has been pushing away those who love her because she craved understanding more than pity; respect more than comfort.

Playing off her realization casually, Barbara states firmly that she has to do this - face this - alone. She cuts off a lock of her hair and places it in Dick's hand, stating that if he can't let her do it alone, then they can't be friends. Reluctant, but understanding, Dick lets her go.

Barbara Gordon's dreams are full of guilt and symbolism. She blames herself for recovering from the injury that kept her trapped in a wheel chair until nearly a year ago. She wonders why she was allowed a miracle when so many others don't. The dream is recurring, and Barbara wakes up in a sweat.

Wandering out of her room, she finds her roommate Alysia sitting near their Christmas tree, having just got off of her late shift at work. Barbara sits down beside her, and the two of them discuss Christmas. Barbara awkwardly describes her best Christmas gift, how her mother walked out when she was twelve, and a year ago that night, her father gave her news of a South African clinic which might be able to help her. Alysia correctly deduces that the wheelchair ramp in Barbara's van was for her. Barbara feels uncomfortable talking about something so personal to her, and hurriedly makes excuses to leave. She's so flustered that she forgets to put on shoes.

To get away from all of the questions, Barbara goes out as Batgirl. She happens upon a gang of thugs holding up an affluent couple. The thugs are using an app for their smartphones which shows them where the Batman is at any given time based on reports, to be sure that he won't interrupt their crimes. Which means that they are not expecting it when Batgirl appears.

Thinking about her case, Barbara is glad that her eidetic memory has allowed her to remember all of the names on the list that she stole from the Mirror, before he stole it back. Naturally, that memory has other uses, like making it easy to take out predictable thugs with inadequate weaponry. Quickly, she disposes of the thugs with surgical precision. The couple are grateful, hugging her to them, glad to be able to see their children again.

The mention of children gives Barbara an idea. Knowing that Mirror feels a responsibility to his murdered wife and daughters, she leaves a note for him at the Hollows Cemetery. The note condemns him for murdering when his own family was murdered, claiming that his feeling that miracles should not happen is no justification for murder. She invites him to Sprang Park for a showdown, after revealing that she has already given the GCPD all of the names on his list, as well as his modus operandi.

At Sprang Park, Batgirl lures the Mirror into the Hall of Mirrors. In the ensuing fight, Barbara realizes that she is outmatched, but still manages to land a powerful kick to his face that smashes the mirrored mask which covers his face. Using the distraction, she activates a projector, which causes the image of Jonathan Mills' family's destroyed car to appear on every mirrored surface in the room, including Mills' own armour. The image shakes him, and he collapses, allowing Batgirl to land a heavy punch which sends him into unconsciousness. Standing over him, she states that sometimes, extraordinary things happen to the worst people, and the best people do suffer. Sometimes, people get their miracles whether they deserve them or not. As she says this, she begins to come to terms with her own survivor's guilt.

Later that night, Barbara and Alysia exchange gifts, and grow closer. When Alysia asks about Barbara's family, she responds that she is used to simple holidays with just her father and brother. I have mixed feelings about this story.

First of all, by the editorial decision of returning to Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl. Many agreed that Barbara becoming Oracle was an amazing role model for people facing disabilities. At the same time, Nostalgia played a big part on this and when you have to reset your universe... would you make Stephanie the first Batgirl?

Gail decided to leave the “killing joke incident” in continuity, and Barbara instead of overcoming that tragedy by becoming a different type of hero, she made her go back to be Batgirl. This is also an inspiring story for people with disabilities, but the fact that she got help from science that doesn’t exist in our world, is not that inspiring.

I also don’t have fond memories of this run, other than the appearances of James Gordon Jr, but my guess is that, that happened because of the many crossovers and because I was reading it month by month. When I think of the new 52 Batgirl, I think of the DCYOU one.

Reading the full story in one sitting is different though. Both Barbara and Mirror have similar inner conflicts, and while at the end, looking at herself in the mirror makes her stronger (or at least, makes her face her fears, another inspiring story), when Mirror looks at his reflection, all he sees is death (well, those photos of his dead family were probably the reason). So the story itself is well crafted in it feels personal.

What I didn’t buy much was the villain. I know of survivor’s guilt, and it is strange that this character was also an ex soldier (he managed to survive the war without this issue). It’s just that I have problems believing that a person with this problem would go on to kill survivors of completely disconnected accidents.

Still, some of these changes made a good impression and Alysia Yeoh became a regular supporting character of the DCU. A character with double diversity (Asian + transgender).

The art looks nice, but maybe that is one of the reasons I do not remember this story that much. There is nothing that really moved me about it, and there were moments that should have (the many instances when Barbara was afraid of losing her legs again). I don’t think it’s bad, and at least it isn’t too sexual, but still, didn’t make a mark on my memory.

When Conservation Met Digitization

For the entire month of November, we at The Henry Ford are celebrating the digitization of over 100,000 artifacts! To reach a goal of 100K artifacts digitized takes many people and departments coordinating and working together. Let’s look at how our conservation department contributed to this momentous achievement. I’ll be highlighting one of the current projects in which digitization is a crucial step.

This graphic shows the various steps in The Henry Ford's digitization process, and where conservation fits in. As Project Conservator on a three-year Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant awarded to The Henry Ford, I work with other conservation and collections specialists to clean and stabilize 3D objects from our Collections Storage Building. These objects oftentimes have never been on display, let alone photographed. As conservators, it’s our responsibility to make sure the objects are not only camera-ready but are structurally sound for exhibition or museum storage.

For this IMLS grant, the objects undergo a multi-step process involving many hands in order to get to digitization. First, objects are tagged by collections or conservation staff with a Tyvek label that states the object number (if known), description/identifying name, and location found in storage. This tag stays with the object throughout the various stages and is updated with staff initials as tasks are completed.

Objects are then vacuumed to remove surface dirt and/or mold before moving from the storage building to be cleaned thoroughly in the Conservation Lab. If the object is too large to handle, it stays in the building for conservation treatment performed in a section that has been zoned off as a clean room. Outside contractors bring in heavy-duty equipment to lift and move the bigger and heavier objects.

Caravan of large objects being moved out of storage! If the object is an appropriate size for the IMLS team to handle and move by forklift or box truck, we bring it back to the Conservation Lab for cleaning and stabilization.

Due to the number of objects we conserve, not all get photographed in the lab. That will happen later! However, we do take before, during, and after conservation treatment photos for some objects that have interesting conservation treatments and/or a significant change from start to finish.

Check out a recent blog on the conservation treatment of this Megalethoscope (32.742.113). Other staff are also involved in the IMLS grant, including registrars who catalog and attach a unique accession number to each object.

Quick photographs are often taken at this stage in order to research and find more information about the object.

Finally, the object is ready for its close-up! It moves down to our photography studio to be photographed under the proper lighting and with a professional grey backdrop. Sometimes the object is so large that is easier to photograph it in its new storage location. You can find all of these images in our Digital Collections on THF.org.

As we are all facing challenges this year brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to adopt new procedures to keep the process running smoothly! It has not been possible to photograph all objects included in the grant. Before the object leaves the conservation lab and moves to storage, though, it gets quickly photographed, and that image is attached to the record in our collections database.

At a later date, our photographer will take the beauty shot for Digital Collections and keep the tally rolling on our digitization numbers! As of today, over 3,500 objects have been pulled from storage, conserved, and rehoused during this three-year grant. Close to 3,000 of those objects have been digitized and are available online.

We work with collections management staff to box, palletize, and wrap the objects before finding the perfect location in storage or sending them on their next adventure for public viewing. The objects from this IMLS grant are just a small portion of the 100,000 artifacts that have been digitized, but they also include some of the largest objects we have in the collection!

Use Strong Passwords

Configure Router Setting

Routers have default settings and passwords. Most people are not likely to change them. To make the remote connections secure, it is important to ask employees to change their router password every week. This way, it minimizes the risk of unauthorized access to your network.

Some routers are not password-protected, meaning that they are not encrypted. If you have such routers, replace them with WPA2 or WPA3, to make sure that the flow of data is not vulnerable to cybercriminals.

Antivirus is one of the crucial security tools you need while working from home. An efficient antivirus protects your company’s information against several risks. Think antivirus software as the security guard standing at your gate. It protects your computer from incoming threats and warns of possible threats to the systems. A leaky database of SMS text messages exposed password resets and two-factor codes

A security lapse has exposed a massive database containing tens of millions of text messages, including password reset links, two-factor codes, shipping notifications and more.

The exposed server belongs to Voxox (formerly Telcentris), a San Diego, Calif.-based communications company. The server wasn’t protected with a password, allowing anyone who knew where to look to peek in and snoop on a near-real-time stream of text messages.

For Sébastien Kaul, a Berlin-based security researcher, it didn’t take long to find.

Although Kaul found the exposed server on Shodan, a search engine for publicly available devices and databases, it was also attached to to one of Voxox’s own subdomains. Worse, the database — running on Amazon’s Elasticsearch — was configured with a Kibana front-end, making the data within easily readable, browsable and searchable for names, cell numbers and the contents of the text messages themselves.

Most don’t think about what happens behind the scenes when you get a text message from a company, whether it’s an Amazon shipping notification or a two-factor code for your login. Often, app developers — like HQ Trivia and Viber — will employ technologies provided by firms like Telesign and Nexmo, either to verify a user’s phone number or to send a two-factor authentication code, for example. But it’s firms like Voxox that act as a gateway and converting those codes into text messages, to be passed on to the cell networks for delivery to the user’s phone.

After an inquiry by TechCrunch, Voxox pulled the database offline. At the time of its closure, the database appeared to have a little over 26 million text messages year-to-date. But the sheer volume of messages processed through the platform per minute — as seen through the database’s visual front-end — suggests that this figure may be higher.

Each record was meticulously tagged and detailed, including the recipient’s cell phone number, the message, the Voxox customer who sent the message and the shortcode they used.

Among our findings from a cursory review of the data:

We found a password sent in plaintext to a Los Angeles phone number by dating app Badoo;

Several Booking.com partners were sent their six-digit two-factor codes to log in to the company’s extranet corporate network;

Fidelity Investments also sent six-digit security codes to one Chicago Loop area code;

Many messages included two-factor verification codes for Google accounts in Latin America;

A Mountain View, Calif.-based credit union, the First Tech Federal Credit Union, also sent a temporary banking password in plaintext to a Nebraska number;

We found a shipping notification text sent by Amazon with a link, which opened up Amazon’s delivery tracking page, including the UPS tracking number, en route to its destination in Florida;

Messenger apps KakaoTalk and Viber, and quiz app HQ Trivia use the service to verify user phone numbers;

We also found messages that contained Microsoft’s account password reset codes and Huawei ID verification codes;

Yahoo also used the service to send some account keys by text message;

And, several small to mid-size hospitals and medical facilities sent reminders to patients about their upcoming appointments, and in some cases, billing inquiries.

“Yeah, this is very bad,” said Dylan Katz, a security researcher, who reviewed some of the findings.

The exposure to personal information and phone numbers notwithstanding, the ability to access two-factor codes in near-real-time could have put countless number of accounts at risk of hijack. In some cases, websites will only require a phone number to reset an account. With access to the text message through the exposed database, hijacking an account could take seconds.

“My real concern here is the potential that this has already been abused,” said Katz. “This is different from most breaches, due to the fact the data is temporary, so once it’s offline any data stolen isn’t very useful.”

Kevin Hertz, Voxox’s co-founder and chief technology officer, said in an email that the company is “looking into the issue and following standard data breach policy at the moment,” and that the company is “evaluating impact.”

Many companies, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, have rolled out app-based two-factor authentication to thwart SMS-based verification, which has long been seen as vulnerable to interception.

If ever there was an example, this latest exposure would serve well.

My Review of Transformers Prime

I am going to admit this right now: I am a MASSIVE Transformers fan. I grew up watching Transformers Animated, and I love the franchise to this day. Sure it may just seem like every series is just rehashing the same format: The heroic Autobots are fighting the evil Decepticons, but I still find myself enjoying the different interpretations of the same characters throughout different series. Today we’re going to look at my personal favorite of those series, Transformers Prime: One of the most recent series, and one of the most beloved. For those that don’t know, Prime was part of the Aligned Continuity: a continuity that started from the video game Transformers: War for Cybertron, and continuing now through the cartoon Transformers Robots in Disguise. Prime was a TV show running from 2010 to 2013, and has been called the best Transformers cartoon since Beast Wars. Why is it called that, you say? Well let’s find out

Warning: Spoilers ahead. If you haven’t watched the show, please do so before reading this review. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Right from the first five minutes, you can tell that this show is going to be much darker than most recent shows have been, as it begins with the death of Cliffjumper. He is killed by Starscream, voiced by Steven Blum, who shoves his claws into his chest, instantly killing him. That moment alone set the tone for the whole series. That’s one thing that people love about this show: the tone. It’s much more serious and dark than recent shows, such as Animated, and it is not afraid to kill off any character.

That sounds good, but it also leads to the series biggest problem: it kills of characters that the fandom has grown fond of. Take, for example, the character Breakdown. He was brought in to be the arch nemesis of Bulkhead, one of the main characters. Many people liked Breakdown and liked his rivalry with Bulkhead. Then season two happens, and he dies. Many fans didn’t like this, including myself, since we felt like Breakdown could’ve been used more, and could have had an interesting storyline about him deciding to be loyal to either Starscream or Megatron. Yes, he is technically still used in the show later on, but the character is dead. This isn’t always the case however. There are some cases where the idea of killing a character is done well. Case in point, the character Dreadwing. Dreading was killed in season two, but I felt it was handled well. He had a story arc: avenging the death of his twin brother Skyquake, and the arc was finished. He found out that Starcream was responsible for his death and disgraced him by raising him from the dead as a zombie. When he found this out, he turned on Megatron and tried to kill Starscream, leaving Megatron with the only option of killing him. Dreading couldn’t hold a story anymore, because he didn’t have any other goals beyond serving Megatron and avenging Skyquake. Since the latter involves betraying Megatron, he couldn’t continue to serve him. He could have had a story arc on his own like Starscream did in season two, but he didn’t have any motivation, desires, or power to do so. He made it perfectly clear he couldn’t join the Autobots, and he doesn’t want to rule the Decepticons. Best thing to do was to kill him off. That’s the right way to kill a character: have them complete a story arc, and make sure they don’t have anything left to do. That way, the audience can feel sadness at their loss, but also feel a sense of closure when they do die. Wow! I went way off track didn’t I? Well no worries, I can make up for that. We talked about the tone, but now let’s talk about the characters.Now, I will readily admit that the characters in Prime aren’t as distinct or have the sense of individuality as the characters in Animated. In Prime, the characters fell into three different sections: the badass, the loyal, and the loyal badass. There wasn’t exactly a ton of individuality amongst them, but there still was some. I’m going to talk about my two favorites from both factions, and explain why they are awesome, even without the individuality. Let’s start with Optimus Prime. I will also readily admit that this is my favorite Optimus Prime to date. He is old, wise, mature, and all around awesome. He falls into the category of loyal badass, but he is still awesome. We don’t always see him struggle to keep his emotions in check, but when we do, boy do we. Case in point, when Starscream stole the Omega Keys in season two, Optimus felt all the frustration of being tricked by him, and let it all out in one massive scream. It was so emotionally powerful that dialogue was not necessary afterwords. But even at his highs and lows, Optimus Prime will always be the most level headed, wise, and powerful warriors in any Transformers continuity. Now that we looked at my favorite Autobot, let’s look at my favorite Decepticon, Starscream. The Decepticons also fell into three categories: the loyal, the schemer, or the conqueror. Knowing Starscream, you can guess which one he falls into. The schemer. Not only is this my favorite Starcream, this is arguably the best Starscream iteration to date. He is everything past Starscreams want to be. He is cowardly, but he knows when to strike. He’s like a cobra, biding his time for just the right moment to enact his plans. He is also the most tactically competent Starscream to date. Most of his plans go wrong, but he is still a great strategist, as his plans fail through either his own ego, or an unforseen force. Either way, if these didn’t get in the way, some of his plans might have worked. A plus Starscream right here. Now that we talked about the great characters, let’s finish this review off with the stories. Prime had a lot of different story arcs that often coincide with one another, and have a satisfying payoff by seasons end or next season’s beginning. The first one was the return and fall of Megatron. Megatron discovered something called Dark Energon, which could reanimate the dead transformers as zombies, referred to as terrorcons in the show. His plan was to use the dark energon to revive all of the dead Cybertronians on Cybertron, and sea them to take over/destroy Earth. The Autobots stop him and all is right again. Then the next major one was the rise of Unicron. Unicorn, the transformers equivalent of Satan, is awakening in the center of the Earth due to a magnetic pull caused by a rare planetary alignment. Thus it is up to the Autobots and Megatron to team up and stop him with the Matrix of Leadership. But afterwards, Optimus loses his memories, and become Orion Pax. Megatron uses Orion to unlock something called the Iacon Database: a database stolen when the Cons raided the Iacon Hall of Records during the War. The database contains a bunch of encrypted coordinates where an Iacon relic has been stored for future use. Eventually the Autobots help get Orions memory back and get Optimus to return, as well as access the database. Thus starts a MASSIVE scavenger hunt for the relics buried on Earth. Eventually, they find the Omega Keys: devices that can activate something called the Omega Lock, which they can use to restore Cybertron. Through a series of unfortunate events, the Cons get secure the Lock and use it to cuneiform Earth, which would destroy all life in the process. Optimus eventually destroys the Lock to protect Earth, but not before Megatron, makes a new fortress next to the Autobots base, and destroy the base, with Optimus still inside. During this time the Autobots are scattered across Earth, which lead to Megatron needing a new way to hunt them down. And he does in the form of the Predacons. The Predacons are basically like Earth’s dinosaurs on Cybertron, even through they look like dragons and other mythical creatures. Eventually, Optimus does get better and gets a new form, and destroys Megatron’s fortress. Thus starts another scavenger hunt, in the form of both sides looking for Predacon bones, scattered across Earth. When Megatron finally gets enough bones to clone a Predacon army, it becomes apparent that the Preds are, in fact, sentient beings that can also transform. When Megatron realises this, he plans to have the Autobots destroy all of the Predacons being cloned, and having only one remain. This leads to the discovery of another plot element which leads to a successful recreation of the Omega Lock. The Autobots attack the Cons warship and take it, in order to use the Lock to restore their home, which they do. And they all lived happily ever after, that is until the sequel, but we’ll get to that later. The story arcs may seem repetitive, but they still are very interesting and fun to watch. They always offer something new, and have plenty of twists in order to keep the audience’s attention. That, in a very large nutshell, is why Transformers Prime is my favorite Transformers continuity. Good News as Number of Crew Repatriated to Philippines Increases

With reports of exhaustion and burn out among the many seafarers trapped at sea, some heartening news has emerged from Manila this week.

Sharp Crew Management reports it has taken part in the successful repatriation of more than 8,000 cruise industry crew members from throughout the world.

Roger Storey, MD of Sharp Crew Management, Singapore, reports: “Over the past seven weeks we have repatriated more than 8,000 crew from Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises – thanks to the provision of 13 full charter flights and two commercial flights. Needless to say, this mass repatriation has not been an easy task to accomplish!”

The company advises that two further charter flights from the USA have been approved but, as a result of this week’s closure of the main airport in Manila, these have now been put on hold. Storey added: “We expect to be able to bring in these flights around the middle of this month, which should bring our total repatriated crew to around 9,000.”

The latest Seafarers Happiness Index, conducted by the Mission to Seafarers, states: “Seafarers reported feeling that not enough is being done to ensure the safety of those on board. They reported feeling physically exhausted, mentally disturbed, homesick and anxious.”

Singapore and Manila-based Sharp, which specializes in providing crew members to the international shipping market, has been putting all its efforts into crew repatriation – particularly difficult especially with quarantines and fast-changing protocols to be observed, as Storey explained:

“The first challenge we encountered was to find hotel rooms for arriving crew as, at that time, pretty much every hotel in the Metro Manila area had been closed down as a result of the lockdown. With great assistance from the Department of Health (DoH) and Bureau of Quarantine (BoQ) we were able to secure several hotels early on and have been able to hold on to them. Out of the 8,000 repatriated crew, almost 6,000 of them have now been able to proceed home after completing their 14-day quarantine – some then needed to undertake another 14-day community quarantine, but most were able to carry out a 14-day self-quarantine at home.”

Unfortunately the story doesn’t end there for some seafarers. Storey continued: “At present we have almost 2,000 crew from Visayas and Mindanao who are stranded in Manila, unable to get to their provinces. The Philippines' Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration  (OWWA) had organised for ferries to take them to Cebu, IloIlo, Bacolod and other places in the south but unfortunately this has not been successful and is now suspended indefinitely. The reason for closing the airport for a week is to be able to schedule sweeper flights to enable these stranded crew members to leave Manila.”

Praising those involved in the repatriation efforts, Storey said: “While bringing home this many crew has been a huge challenge, with a great team and good cooperation with DoH and BoQ, we have been able to fulfill our obligations to the Principals and the crew!

Looking ahead, the procedure may now speed up as guidelines for crew repatriation in the Philippines have now been amended to require all crew to undergo RT-PCR swab testing on arrival. Those who test negative will be able to forgo the 14-day quarantine in Manila and can proceed home for either community or home quarantine. 

Storey added: “We still have a lot of work to do. Our first order of business is to update our database, making sure all those repatriated crew are signed off on the correct date – a process which I expect will take us up to three weeks. Then we will have to check each file to ensure all their documents are up to date, identify any which need to be renewed, and establish any training requirements. Given that most Government offices, as well as training centres, are presently closed, this part may become a bit tricky!”

When cruising resumes, Storey predicts further challenges will need to be overcome. “From what we know at this point, cruise vessels may start operating from European waters first. This means that a large number of crew will have to obtain Schengen visas. For now all embassies are also closed, so there isn’t much we can do to prepare.”

Government Told Immigrant Parents to Pay for DNA Tests to Get Kids Back, Advocate Says

DALLASU.S. government officials recently told four immigrant women that they must pay for DNA tests in order to be reunited with their children, according to the shelter that housed the women.

The tests are the latest ad hoc effort by the Trump administration to reunite families it had separatedin some cases because authorities took documents from adults proving they are related to their children. The tests are being administered by a private contractor on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Refugee Resettlement, which oversees the care and housing of children. HHS has refused to name the contractor, which may be a violation of federal law.

None of them have the money [for the tests], so its going to fall back on us to push back on that, said Ruben Garcia, the director of Annunciation House, an immigrant shelter in El Paso where the women are staying.

Three of the women are mothers of the children, Garcia said, and the fourth is attempting to reunite with her brother, a three and half-year-old boy.

Garcia said that the tests likely cost money that many immigrants entering the country with little more than the clothes on their backs dont have. Iliana Holguin, an immigration attorney in El Paso who works with Annunciation House, said the government made some of her clients pay between $700 to $800 to prove their relationship to a relative as part of their citizenship cases.

The government wants the parents to foot the bill for the DNA testing when theyre the ones that caused the need for DNA testing, Holguin said. Its incredible.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement, responsible for the DNA testing, told The Daily Beast it provides DNA testing at no cost to verify parentage.

Solution for Self-Imposed Problem

ORR requires DNA testing in some cases to verify adult immigrants are related to children in ORRs custody, before the children can be released to the adults who have either been paroled or are to be deported. The tests are often required, according Garcia, when parents have had their paperwork regarding their children taken by Customs and Border Patrol or Immigration and Customs Enforcement. (CBP and ICE did not immediately respond to requests for comment.)

When these families come in, Customs and Border Protection takes away the documents from parents and puts them in their file, Garcia said. In the cases where theyve been separated from their children, ORR then says, Youre going to need to provide the documents that CBP took.

And when the immigrants cant, Garcia said, ORR tells parents they must take a DNA test.

Its unclear how many immigrants have been told theyd have to pay for DNA tests. Other immigration attorneys reached by The Daily Beast said their clients had not been asked to pay for DNA tests.

Greg Chen of the American Immigration Lawyers Association called the tests a delay tactic by a government that is primarily interested in detaining the children and parents to put pressure on them to accept deportation before they have the opportunity to get a fair hearing on their asylum claims and other claims for relief.

In a specific case when theres evidence of fraud DNA testing may be warranted, but it should not be done across the board especially when proof of familial relationship can be demonstrated in other ways, Chen said.

Those other ways include the government documents that are taken from immigrants once theyre caught for crossing the border, verification that a simple phone call from ORR to CBP or ICE could achieve, Garcia said.

But when I go to ORR, they say, We dont talk to immigration [authorities], he said.

Government Keeps Contractor Secret

HHS has refused to reveal the identity of the contractor who is performing the DNA tests. A search of federal contract databases showed no recent contracts for DNA work with the HHS office which oversees ORR.

DNA contract information is not available in a readily reportable format, HHS' Administration of Children and Families office told The Daily Beast in a statement. A day earlier, that same office said on its website it had not consulted with the contractor to get permission to release the contract.

Under federal law, government agencies have 30 days from the date of award to release certain basic contract information to a federal database online.

Agencies don't need permission from contractors to publicize info on the contract. This is the public's business and taxpayers dollars are being used, Nick Schwellenbach of the Project on Government Oversight told The Daily Beast. Agencies often make this information available immediately.

Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union and the government agreed in a court filing on Monday the federal government will not use the DNA samples or test results for any purpose besides verifying parentage, and will ensure that the DNA samples and test results are destroyed afterwards. In a posting on its website, HHS pledged to destroy DNA swabs and test results after parental relationships had been confirmed.

Roots in the Obama Administration

The Trump administration isnt the first to use DNA tests to verify relationships between immigrants or refugees. Under the Obama administration, the Department of Homeland Security and State Department initiated a DNA testing pilot program for refugees from certain African countries in the Priority Three program that reunited refugees already inside the U.S. with relatives still abroad. Reports of widespread fraud in the Priority Three program (preliminary testing showed only 20 percent of tested immigrants had a biological relationship with claimed relatives abroad) prompted the closure of the program in 2008 before it was reopened in 2012.

A 2010 public notice warned that applicants to the Priority Three program would be responsible for the cost of DNA testing, but successful applicants may be eligible for reimbursement of DNA test costs.

Garcia said he has heard that test fees can be waived, but has yet to hear specifically from ORR how to apply for those waivers.

I dont know if its a situation where if you dont ask about the waivers they dont tell you, he said.

DNA tests continued in 2014, when a wave of unaccompanied children began fleeing from gang violence in Central and South America and arriving at the southern border. Then, the Obama administration instituted another initiative similar to Priority Three called the Central American Minors (CAM) program. Many refugee children arrived looking to reunite with parents or relatives already inside the U.S. The CAM program sought to provide a safer alternative to the often dangerous journey unaccompanied children took through Central America and to the border by allowing family members to apply for reunification legally.

The program required DNA testing to prove a biological relationship with migrant children. As an HHS fact sheet noted, parents inside the U.S. would pay for the cost of testing up front and would be reimbursed for testing costs ONLY if ALL claimed and tested biological relationships are confirmed by DNA test results.

The Trump administration ended the program in 2017.

For now, the tests being performed on immigrants caught up in Trumps zero tolerance policy are just another obstacle for mothers and fathers who have already faced plenty of them in order to be reunited with their children, Garcia said.

Heres what I want from ORR: its my understanding that DNA test results can be quick or slow, depending on whichever you want. So why dont you take the responsibility, ORR, and get this done quickly and get these kids back with their parents. Dont give me this, Theres too many to do and its going to take a while, or Theres a big long line, because youre the one who took the kids away in the first place, so fix it.
