The skylofitan was often known as having his head in the clouds. Often daydreaming of home while looking skyward, their long walks through forests and plains of the other's hyrules.

When they got to Skyloft it was another story entirely.

Up here. Clouds were the epitome of danger, nothing spelt more danger than flying a loftwing through heavy clouds.

"Okay, so watch the clouds. Dont stay outside if they decide to drift too low to the island."

"But dosent it act like fog?" The sailor asked him as he looked over one of the edges. The skies drifting their lazy blue hue as the day stretched ever onward.

"No, These clouds are thicker, and full of water. Staying inside it for too long makes it harder to breathe. Especially for those not accustomed to the changes." He looked to the town behind him. "I'd be okay for a while, I've lived here me entire life but i fear what would happen to the rest of you."

"Are all clouds dangerous?"

"No." He pointed to a large towering cloud mass in the far distance. "Cumulus clouds, or the big fluffy ones are dangerous and should be avoided."

"But how could something so well... cloudy be so dangerous?" Wind asked, his eyes looking across the endless air into the expanse beyond.

"Ask the loftwings who's feathers get drenched so much they can't fly anymore." Sky sighed. "Or, ask the islands of Aroura, Who were killed by the likes of the cumulus when a cloud mass so massive covered their islands for weeks."

"So... dont go into the clouds."

"No... Dont go into the clouds."

U mention in 1 of ur tags that Poseidon has vitiligo? Could u tell us more about that pls?

Okay so, I saw this ask and went "oh man this is a wonderful opportunity to ramble about some of my design decisions for the Olympians" then I also, simultaneously went "This is also a perfect opportunity to doodle Poseidon" so I spent like, way too much time doing a dinky little doodle to show both what Poseidon's vitiligo looks like + what I generally envision his design to be like when he's on Olympus!

Of course, in true Ginger fashion, it's very messy but I think it gets the point across well enough! The big reason Poseidon has vitiligo (or why I've interpreted his skin as being speckled) is because well, as a horse/hippocampus (which is his actual preferred form) he has a piebald/pinto coat and the only way really to translate that onto a human-presenting form is some form of pigmentation disorder like vitiligo or leukoderma.

Poseidon, like almost every other Olympian (save for Apollo who has the most human-like appearance of them all) has multiple animal/mythical creature elements incorporated into his design/interpretation, many of these I've chosen to allude to what their 'truest' forms are like, for example Zeus' big bull horns because he was born a horned god or Aphrodite's feathered hair and talons because she is directly descended from Ouranos. Because gods are always changing and evolving as the world changes and evolves, these features of theirs can change to better match their current 'truest' self, but most deities, especially the older ones, tend to settle after a period of time and don't experience much drastic change. For my purposes, Poseidon was born with horse like features which he inherited from his mother including his striking piebald coat and his horse's ears, but he later acquired sea serpent traits such as his tail, sharp teeth and water-like hair after acquiring the domain of the Ocean and being forced to adapt very rapidly to his new environment.

Due to geneology and generational inheritance being such a major theme in my work, I chose to let that stand for the descendents of the gods as well! Humans naturally aren't born with coats and such, but many of Poseidon's children do end up having some form of leucism from minor things like Ancaeus' double coloured hair or Bellerophon's 'peeled' hands and feet (they were a lighter colour than the rest of his body) to much more intense expressions of the trait like Theseus' albinism or Triton's very unique speckling. It's rare for his human children to get an extreme expression of this trait due to humans just kind of having less melanin to work with compared to nymphs, spirits or animals, but it does happen from time to time.

this is my shader white whale . some day i want to know how they do this. holding out for their incredibly talented graphics engineer john edwards to do a gdc talk or something on them like he did for the sand in journey. this game runs on phones!!!! its a mobile game!!!!!!!!

all i know is that journey uses something called "blobs" to do the terrain and clouds , which i imagine is some kind of SDF/voxel rendering, meaning instead of making a sphere out of triangles/quads like most games do, they would just say "hey, put a sphere here" and it is a perfect sphere because you can use math to find where the sphere starts/stops.. like here's a simplified example in 2d, where the left is what most render engines do building things out of triangles/quads (or in this case lines), and right, what sdf engines do

so anyways having these things be SDF lets you do a ton of stuff you wouldnt be able to do like smooth noise displacement and fancy lighting calculations (though i imagine a lot of the lighting is baked ahead of time. this game runs on a phone !!!!! but also this game has a day/night/weather cycle so actually it might be realtime ?!?) if it is run ahead of time the lighting setup is probably run in a very similar way to how Actual clouds are rendered and mapped to the clouds in some way (through a texture? through the vertex color? this thing is a SDF does it even have vertex colors? maybe a point cloud generated from the SDF?) and if its realtime. then they either found a very fast way to do that lighting calculation with the SDFs or they found something that approximates it very well

and then for the surface of the clouds.. my best guesses is they are using a noise to wiggle around the surface of the SDF in a way that makes it look all fluffy and cloudy, or they are using some kind of particle system to add extra little bits of SDF to the surface of the clouds. or both!!! maybe they do one for close-up and one for far.. i dont know!!! i want to learn so bad though. it is such a pretty game

i bought a cheap laptop to replace my good ol' latitude e4300 and at first.. at first i thought i'd make a grave mistake, for you see, in my post-laptop death fugue state of looking for a replacement i was not as thorough in my researching as i should have been......

you see, i ordered a laptop that had win7 as its OS

which is great, it was a real fun blast from the past (sort of, i skipped win7) BUT....

win7 isn't compatible with scrivener. or onedrive. there's workarounds for onedrive but scrivener is necessary...........

anyway allegedly ms stopped letting ppl upgrade for free a couple yrs ago but i managed to weasel my way into an upgrade to win10 anyway and now after a couple of days of fighting for updates to finish and then figuring out why onedrive refused to actually open.........

success.... i can get back on my groove again

9. worst part of canon

listen I know it's because I'm in the field and so all the things that annoy me are just background noise to most other people but I really really hate the way hacking and networks and AIs and tech in general is handled in cyberpunk. I don't think it should be perfectly realistic or exactly what we have in real life. I do think it should have some internal consistency when it comes to power leveling and that it should make some sort of sense. cyberpunk worldbuilding is often its weakest feature and that it's a bummer.

and it's not just a matter of tech working basically like magic, but the fact that there seem to be no internal rules so you can never figure out what the consequences of anything might be. why do people not just shut off their bluetooth before getting in a fight with someone who has a netrunner? why does alt not simply archive the engrams instead of imply she's going to eat them in some weird digital cannibalistic fashion? (why not just delete them if she doesn't have the space) are we just adding arbitrary and tragic restrictions on at the ninth hour because it makes it dark and gritty? that's BORING. tell me from the start why I'm fucked because my android soul is incompatible with your apple hardware. maybe johnny's brain which has never dealt with kiroshi's might have vision issues. let's think about those restrictions and why all software sucks instead of doing weak philosophical gotchas at the worst moment because the game has made pains to never discuss anything fundamental about life after death until you have to suddenly make a decision.

you know what would be an interesting idea in this vein? that the AIs made before the fall of the net really did jumpstart all technology and since they've all been banished everything has stagnated because huge world-wide companies having their global communications axed is a huge blow to recover from- not to mention the literal brain drain. What if the reason everything's been getting shittier is because people have been slowly poking holes in software and infrastructure that's no longer maintained? That no one knows how to maintain? That society is doomed to slowly fail because of unsustainable processes and people are going to have to band together to- Oh, what's this? I'm hearing that the actual problem is all the AIs are mad and feral and will drive you mad if you commune with them and take over huge spider robots. Well. That works too.

10. worst part of fanon

I would like to get more fanon honestly. I so rarely see people's actual takes on characters or the game's story or the world. And that's not a dig at OC lore, which I do like. Sometimes my face-blind ass just gets tired of VP where someone is looking into my soul the camera.

Mild annoyance because I also write my own wish fulfillment fic so I'm not saying I'm any better half the time- if it was as easy to be a rebel as just quitting your corpo job with healthcare and a steady salary to become a merc or a hacker or something, then there wouldn't be much to be punk about. You know? The whole point is that life in cyberpunk is a grinding struggle, and you do have to make sacrifices if you want to fight against it. The "we're poor but happy" thing probably isn't going to work out that way.

Actually that's the start of another essay of how interesting Barghest's survival and its recruitment strategy is... and why there are so many powerful gangs in NC. Being independent ain't easy. But I guess that's really just an extension of the game's reality where V can turn into a hero-figure killing machine who no one can beat in terms of skill, isn't it? Probably why the tower ending is the way that it is!

Not really? I can't really think of any instances where I've changed my mind about a ship. Characters yes, ships no. I guess maybe silverv, before I finished the game? Johnny hadn't earned enough Felix points for me to care about him. But I think I came pretty willingly when it was time.

27) What's your favourite part of the writing process?

Honestly, I'm going to cheat a little here because I have two favourite parts of my writing process (and yes, I'm saying 'my' instead of 'the' because everyone's process is decidedly different) and that's research and revision!

Research is something that's very dear to me, especially when writing historical/mythological works. Maybe it's because half the reason I got into writing myth was due to intense irritation at the way greek gods and ancient greek religion is portrayed but I find that the myths are always far more nuanced and wise than the retellings that exist for them. It helps me center myself and the elements of my work as well as really helps me ensure that the topics and themes I want to tackle are in line with whatever it is I'm adapting or taking inspiration from. And research isn't just a one and done thing either - I'm researching and doublechecking stuff all throughout the writing process. Notes always need updating, cultural elements always need to be taken note of and in general, I find it greatly enriching to be able to learn so much while writing which is a feeling I'm always hoping to share with others who read my work.

As for revision, I guess you can call it the phase where the magic happens (lol) I've said before that I don't consider myself a poet and I truly, I don't know if I ever will, but poetry is the language of the gods so I do my best to emulate it. While figuring out the actual semantics and syntax for things is a real massive pain (and is genuinely part of why it takes me so long to write sometimes), reading my prose aloud and adjusting/editing words and lines for conciseness and rhythm, doublechecking that all my themes are in order, getting friends to proofread my works and using their feedback to make sure that my works at least broadly convey some of what I wanted it to -- all of these things are a lot of fun to me and it forces me to think about and process my work in a myriad of ways that helps me better write my next piece!
