Reasons you should watch Cloudburst (2011) for Lesbian Visibility Week:
One of the only films about old lesbians
Commentary on ableism and familial manipulation
Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker as lesbians
Historical context of a time when gay marriage was legal in Canada but not most of the United States
Story of loving and supporting a blind woman
Lesbian road trip with hijinks and a hitch hiker
Incredibly gorgeous footage of Maine and Nova Scotia
The interplay of objection to the institution of marriage as a tool of state control vs. providing a set of legal rights so a loving partner can make decisions instead of a hostile/indifferent blood family
Will make you cry bittersweet tears

“Faithfull’s voice, raggedly notched and erratic, sometimes starts flat or strikes a note that’s like a bald tire hitting a patch of glare ice. But what’s there all the time is this ripping knife of an alto, rueful and accusing and strangely vulnerable. What is in this voice? Only a few notes perhaps but a gallon of prussic acid, a season of tropical cloudbursts, the grittiest pale Northern skies, the emptiest grey hotel rooms. And endless, sleepless flights, thousands of cigarettes, Remy Martin, sex that’s the nostalgia of sex and happiness that’s just the memory of happiness. Hope that if you die before you awake you really won’t be aware of it. And the most unexpected sweetness.”
/ Gary Indiana reviewing Marianne Faithfull’s concert at the Bottom Line in NYC for The Village Voice on 15 December 1987 /
Happy birthday to exquisitely ravaged, resilient and timeless gravel-voiced art-rock diva of broken hearts (and the woman Tom Waits describes as “the aunt offering you a cigarette at a wedding when you’re 11”), Marianne Faithfull (born 29 December 1946). The closest equivalent we have to a present-day, post-punk Dietrich, Piaf or Holiday turns 77 today. Pictured: portrait by Wayne Maser, circa 1995 (around the time of her A Secret Life album). Read my 2011 interview with Faithfull here.

Thanks to @goldfishgrahamcracker for tagging me in this game about favorite movies!
List 10 of your favorite movies. Then tag others whose choices you'd like to see.
I am monstrously terrible at making ranked lists! It's not the way my brain works and I really struggle with picking "favorites" when that feels like comparing apples to oranges.
I started writing up a list of movies that are special to me and it wound up 3x as long as the set of 10 stipulated by the game. So I gave myself a cutpoint of "favorite movies since 2000" and wound up with a more manageable list of the first ones that came to mind. Here it is! Films organized in order of release.
Quills (2000)
The Rules of Attraction (2001)
Secretary (2002)
Mean Girls (2004)
Casino Royale (2006)
American Gangster (2007)
The Dark Knight (2008)
Cloudburst (2011)
Hot Guys with Guns (2013)
King Lear (2018)
Tagging @sleepingfancies and @puddinginthemix if y'all feel inclined to jump in on this!

postcard about my day:
had the stats class I TA this morning and then worked through homework questions with some students who were like -- i thought you said we weren't doing math in this class 😭. I wish academia wasn't such a shithole because I genuinely love working with college students. gossiped over the fence with a couple of my neighbors. was reminded once again why the elitism of world major races makes my eyes roll back into my head. picked up a cross stitch I started working on in 2020 that I still intend to gift to a friend. oh also I watched cloudburst, which feels very 2011 especially in the particular flavor of fatphobia, but it's a story about lesbians in their 70s running away to Canada to get married before one of their granddaughters puts them in a home. -patrichornkissed
that movie sounds delightful despite the fatphobia! also academia....word. college students are so delightful, yet so many faculty in both of my colleges sounds absolutely Done whenever they talked about anything other than teaching. congratulations on picking up the cross stitch again! this is wonderful, thank you

Tonight I got to show my boyfriend Big Eden (2000). I love that movie so much. It's sappy and cheesy but no one had EVER made a gay romcom like like that. No queer movie had existed with that softness and living acceptance. It's 5 years older than the homophobic misery porn of Brokeback Mountain being held up as representation we should be grateful for. Big Eden broke as many barriers as Philadelphia (1993) or The Boys in the Band (1970).
Queer romcoms are only now becoming common 20 years later. Bros (2022) would have no queer Hallheart movies to simultaneously mock and long for without Big Eden. No The Way He Looks (2014), no Cloudburst (2011), no Fire Island (2022), no Spoiler Alert (2022), no Booksmart (2019), and no countless other films.
They exist because Thomas Bezucha said we deserve these stories, too. We deserve gentleness and love and small town crushes held onto for decades and someone who pours all their feelings into cooking for you and pretends it's not him because he's too shy. He deserve a Greek Chorus of old men who do nothing all day getting roped into it and hardware store lesbians and an old busybody playing matchmaker that realizes her errors. We deserve silly love triangles with gentle endings for everyone. We deserve the fantasy of it all. We deserve no queer people dying or being pressured by their family or corrected by anyone. Just love. Sappy, soft, gentle, healing, protective love. We deserve our own take on old tropes. And that's still something special.

The sun is about one inch above the horizon, changing color from yellow to red. Like a blood orange. Some dangerous clouds look like they could burst out any minute. Tide is high, running out. Ferguson’s already got his traps, and he’s almost around the point.
What shapes are the clouds?
There’s a donkey, carrying two nuns and a beagle. Racing across the sky.
Cloudburst (2011) dir. Thom Fitzgerald
